Discussion of the paper of CHARLES COLCOCK JONES, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 105, September, 1915, pp. 1887 to 1898. D. A. LYON, Salt Lake City, Utah.-For some years I have been interested in the iron-ore deposits of the Pacific Coast, and I feel very much indebted to Mr. Jones for the information he has given us on this subject. I think that we are also very much indebted to him for having presented this paper, as he has given us reliable data in shape of facts and figures, which is just what we need in considering whether or not it would be commercially feasible to attempt to establish an iron and steel industry on the Pacific Coast. Personally, due to lack of market, I do not think it is a commercially feasible proposition at the present time. Mr. Jones states that pig iron can be produced on this coast as cheaply as it can be produced in Pittsburgh. Even. so, what can be done, with it after it is produced? To begin with, iron produced on the. Pacific Coast has to compete with iron produced in China. Last year I had occasion to investigate the subject of the market for iron and, steel on the Pacific slope, and found that it was possible for the producers of Chinese iron to sell it for much less than the price for which iron can be produced in the West, and also for less than eastern pig iron is now sold for, even when shipped through the Panama Canal. I was informed that the agents for Chinese iron had instructions to sell it for $1 or $2 less per ton than that asked for other irons on the market. Of course, I realize that the competition of Chinese iron may not be important, but even if it is not, and even though pig iron ,can be produced at the cost given by Mr. Jones in his paper, I do not see any immediate chance of its being so produced, due to lack of market. C. C. JONES, Los Angeles, Cal.-Mr. Lyon is right. It is a fact that Chinese pig is being sold in San Francisco on some large contracts at $18.50 a ton, while $19 is the usual price. We ought to produce iron. on this coast at $14. Personally I do not think Chinese iron is ever going to be an important factor. It is a bugbear out here now. You are not going to have much Chinese pig iron in .this country. Our little friend Japan is going to absorb everything it can. The price of Chinese pig iron at $18 is about as low as it will ever get. If we can show you that we can produce this iron here at the same price as at Pittsburgh, I. think you will have a good opportunity to compete with anything China or India can ever do. Costs there are very low now. They are going to come up by leaps and bounds in the next few years. The labor cost over there may be very low now, but I. have seen some men from there quite recently

The permeability of sands and soils seems to be adequately de- scribed by Darcy's law, but the permeability of rocks is complicated by a number of factors related to the probability of crack intersections. During the last few years we have developed a statistical theory of fragmentation which has been successful in explaining the observed behavior of rocks. In this paper, a theory of permeability is developed which draws on the concepts employed in previous work. The permeability involves three factors, the average fluid flux per crack, the number of cracks per unit area, and the fraction of cracks that are not isolated. Probabilistic ideas are used in connection with the hydrodynamic theory of flow through a single crack to develop an integral expression for permeability. The result has the form of Darcy's law for anistropic media. Although the current work is motivated by the need to develop optimized oil-shale retorts, we believe that the theory can be applied to a variety of other problems.

He took a great interest in technical matters and his inclination was strongly toward research investigations. At the same time he was effective in manual and mechanical work and was generally found working side by side with the men under his direction. His nature was unselfish and he was extremely popular socially. He was a member of the Coeur d'Alene Commandery, Knights Templar. Stanly A. Easton. Lieutenant.Louis Baird Louis Baird, a Lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery of the British Army, died on the battlefield in 1915. Lieutenant Baird was born July 28, 1880, at Stirling, Scotland. His technical education was obtained at King's College, Melbourne, Australia, in 1893 to 1895, and at the Technical College at Glasgow, Scotland, in 1897 to 1900. After an apprenticeship with the Mexican J. & 8. Rec. Co. of Mexico, lasting from 1900 to 1903, he became mill superintendent for the Cia. Minera Benito, at Juarez, Zac. During the year 1905-6 he was assistant manager of the Caridelaria y Anexas, at Pinos, Zac., and from 1906 to 1907 was engineer with the Cia. Minera Jalisco, San Sebastian, Jalisco. At the time of his admission to the Institute, in 1908, he was practising as a mining engineer at Etzatlan, Jalisco, Mexico. For the next four years he practised his profession in the City of Guadalajara, Jalisco, removing, in 1913, to Ixtlan del Rio, in the State of Tepic. It was from here that he returned to England to put his services at the disposal of the British Government. The Institute is not definitely informed as to how, where, or when Lieutenant Baird met his death. iCaptain John H. Ballamy John H. Ballamy, Captain on the Regimental Staff of the 103d Engineers, was killed near Fismes, on Aug. 9, 1918. Captain Ballamy was born at Plvmouth. Pa.. in 1886 and graduated from' the High School of that town in 1903. In the following year he began work as a coal miner, and at the same time began the study of mining engineering in the evening and any other spare time. Direct quantitative comparison of the results of concentrating operations on different ores is frequently desired but almost impossible to obtain if comparison has to be made by means of two quantities for each ore, as must be done at present. This paper represents the outgrowth of attempts to arrive at a single-number quantitative measure of the segregation between minerals or metals as the result of concentrating operations. The usual practice in estimating the effectiveness of concentrating operations, particularly those of ore dressing, has been to determine the recovery of the metal or mineral of interest and the grade of the concentrate. The difficulty in quantifying the effectiveness of concentration by the usual criteria may be illustrated by a few examples. Consider, for instance, two lead ores which yield by flotation the same recovery of lead, say 92 per cent., and the same grade of concentrate, say 60 per cent. Pb. If a substantial difference in the grade of the feed had existed, say if one ore contained 5 per cent. Pb and the other 10 per cent., it is clear that the concentrating operation was more effective in the case of the lower grade ore. It is difficult, however, in the light of these data to state how much more effective was the concentration of the lower grade ore. Consider again two lead ores containing 5 and 10 per cent. Pb and yielding concentrates containing 60 and 72 per cent. Pb respectively, with recoveries of 93 and 92 per cent. respectively; it is well-nigh impossiblc to tell from these figures which results represent the best separation of the minerals. It may be noted that in the usual method of estimating the effectiveness of the segregation of mineral values, no consideration is given to the rejection of the unwanted substances from the concentrate, except in the very indirect manner in which it enters into the grade of the concentrate. Consideration of the rejection of gangue from the concentrate, adequately weighted with recovery of the desired mineral in the concentrate, should supply an adequate criterion of concentration effectiveness.

Unusual problems have arisen at certain iron blast-furnaces in Virginia through the fact that the ore-supplies, derived from the Oriskany formation, contain from a trace up to 1 per cent, of zinc oxide. Since the technical literature bearing on this subject is very scant, the following notes, based on personal experience, will probably be of value to those of our members who are interested in iron blast-furnace practice. The course of zinc through the blast-furnace is readily traced. Entering the throat as zinc oxide, finely dissemiuated through the ore, it descends unchanged to the fusion-zone, since a temperature of 1,000" C. or more is required for its reduction. At the fusion-zone, the zinc oxide is reduced by solid carbon to metallic zinc, which is set free as vapor and rises with the ascending gases to the cooler zones of the furnace. In cooling through the range of temperature from 1,000" to 500° C. the zinc is re-oxidized according to the reaction Zn + CO2 = ZnO + CO, and the resulting zinc oxide, being in a very fine state of division, is readily carried along by the ascending gases. Portions, however, deposit on the descending stock and are carried down, again to pass through the same cycle of changes. Still other portions deposit on the lining of the stack, and gradually form hard masses of "cadmia." Of the remainder of the zinc oxide, the greater part passes out of the furnace, and is either deposited in the down-comer, dust-trap, stoves, boilers and flues, or passes through the chimney into the atmosphere. A small portion escapes reduction and enters the slag as zinc oxide, while still another portion is absorbed into the lining of the furnace.

The general usage of engineers, manufacturers, and merchants, is gradually, bat surely, fixing the answer to this question. In every country rails, boiler-plates, and machinery bars, whether hard or soft, are almost universally called steel, when they are made from cast ingots. Other names for the softer steels, such as " homogeneous metal,'' "Bessemer iron," " Martin iron," and the like, have failed to obtain general recognition. The meaning of the term steel, before it was enlarged to cover newly developing varieties, has been traced, by a recent writer, down through Percy, Shakspeare, and the Bible, in a most interesting manner, from an archœological point of view. Undoubtedly, it did characterize hardness arid other qualities imparted by carbon. It is within the memory of most of us, that all steels were tool steels, and that the soft, structural varieties were introduced—varieties which harden but little, which bend cold, and which, in many physical properties, are akin rather to wrought-iron than to tool-steel. But, since both the hard and the soft steels are made by the same processes, and have their great, distinguishing structural feature in common, viz., homogeneity resulting from fluidity, it has come to pass, despite every other proposed nomenclature, that all the compounds of iron which have been cast in malleable masses, are called steel, the term wrought-iron being still confined to malleable iron made from pasty masses, and hence laminated in structure. No inconvenience has been found, so far, in distinguishing between the more or less carburized products, in general, by the terms " highsteel," "low-steel," "tool-steel," etc., and, in particular, by prefixing the percentage of carbon and other ingredients, to the terra steel. Steels which contain distinguishing ingredients other than carbon, are called "chrome-steel," "titanium-steel," and the like, just as variously compounded bronzes are called " phosphor bronze," " aluminium bronze," etc. Thus the combination of several words or symbols, and figures, may completely disclose the characters of the metal, in terms that are subject to no misunderstanding. But inasmuch as several high metallurgical authorities and clever writers have of late proposed to disturb this natural and somewhat settled nomenclature, it seems important to consider the claims of the various classifications. A downdraft traveling grate process to agglomerate pelletized iron ore concentrates has been successfully demonstrated in a pilot plant at Carrollville, Wis. Work there followed several years of development in the Allis-Chalmers Mfg. Co. laboratories, and the pilot plant phase was carried out in co-operation with Arthur G. McKee & Co., consultants and engineers to the iron and steel industry. End result of the process is conversion of iron ore concentrates into a form which can easily be transported and smelted in the blast furnace.

TULSA SECTION At the smoker concluding the two day meeting of the Tulsa section of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, Tulsa, Okla., Feb. 26, 1919, Dr. Willis T. Lee, the new head of the Geological Department of the University of Oklahoma, was introduced to the assembled geologists and mining engineers. Dr. Lee requested that the geologists and engineers who were making a specialty of petroleum geology assist him in giving a good course in practical oil geology in the Geological Department of the University. After a motion offering the services of all present in giving lectures on their special subjects had been adopted, Dr. Perrine of Hutchinson, Kans., named the geologists who were pledged to give lectures in Dr. Lee's course. The students in geology at Norman are assured of the latest information regarding practical work in petroleum geology and will have the inspiration derived from contact with men who are actually at work upon the problems which they are studying. Dr. Lee and President Brooks of the University are to be congratulated upon the introduction of this .method of instruction. The plan thus put into operation is similar to the graduate system of coaching in athletics followed at many of the large universities; what is good for instruction in athletics should also prove good for instruction in applied geology.

Selective placement of toxic mine spoil has been advocated as a means of reducing environ¬mental pollution at the source. However, methods of burial to control environmental damage are not well understood. Using the finite element method, this paper investigates the burial of toxic material within low permeability packages below the water table. The effects of differing package and spoil permeabilities, anisotropy, and infiltration are modeled to provide information about their effect on the flow system. Projections can then be made that will assist in the design of the toxic spoil package to limit the amount of ground water flowing through them.

THE Iron and Steel Division, A.I.M.E., is unique in this country in that it serves all phases of the iron and steel industries. Through its publications, its meetings, and its sponsorship of new technical developments in the industries, it has proved of great value. The various technical committees of the Division are the nucleus around which this service can be developed. The Blast Furnace and Raw Materials Committee has done excellent work. The need for beneficiation of iron ores is increasing and the economics of this operation are developing more and more in favor of increased activities. Ores that are slightly undergrade should be concentrated up to grade to supplant the present practice of mixing with higher-grade ores to bring up the average composition. Marginal ores that are not now being mined, or that are being mined and piled for future use, should be concentrated. The development of the use of sinter in the blast furnace, because of the elimination of fines, the advantage of better sizing of the charge, the resulting reduction of coke consumption, and increased output of pig iron per furnace, will make concentration and sintering become practical ahead of its natural time.

THIRTY per cent of the mineral wealth of the United States is obtained from seven states: Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. This area, which produced 84,727,156,000 worth of minerals in 1948, constitutes an almost complete economic unit in relation to mineral resources essential to industry. All of these states are producers of fuels and some of metallics, but in the field of important nonmetallic industrial minerals the picture is near perfection-a mineral any one of the seven states lacks, one of the others has in quantity.

Practically all underground work on the Minnesota iron ranges is done by miners working on a so-called contract wage system. This system, while it has certain advantages over the straight day's pay or company-account method of wage payment, has serious and vital defects. In view of the scarcity and demands of labor, it is important that employers of labor scrutinize their systems of wage payments carefully, not only to save losses and trouble, due to labor disturbances, but also to secure the greatest efficiency of their workmen and reduce their operating costs. It is admitted that an adequate, just, and equitable wage is the prime factor in bringing about these benefits. The wage of labor and its method of application and payment have been, and always will be, the main factors in the unrest and dissatis. faction of labor. Not only does labor want and need an adequate wage, assuming that work is adequately performed, but it wants and is entitled to a just and equitable wage. Labor must have respect for the fairness of the wage and for the fairness of the management in the application of the wage It is conceded that the Minnesota iron miners are now, and have been, in the main paid adequately, but the inherent defects of the so-called contract system prevent any just or equitable application of this wage to the various units of the labor body. The defects of the contract system, with its obvious inequalities, favoritisms, and injustices, are cancers in the brain of labor. Every thinking miner realizes these defects and knows just what they are; the unthinking do not realize the details of the subject, but each month they are forcibly reminded of these defects through the pay envelope. As practiced on the iron ranges, however, the so-called "contract " system is not a contract and the name is a misnomer. No true contractual obligation exists. As usually practised, the contract system involves the setting of a price per foot in development work, or per foot or per car, usually the latter, in slicing or stoping, by the mining captain, and assumes its acceptance, though often under protest, by the men. A price is set for each working place, in which there are usually two men per shift. This price includes labor and supplies, such as explosives, fuse and caps, shovels, carbide, etc., and the men divide the total earnings less the amount expended for supplies. (communIcatIon to the Secretary*).-Referring to Mr. Dumble's description of the stratigraphy of eastern Mexico, I should like to question the classification of the ?Papagallos? or ?Mendez? shales as being of Cretaceous age and the so-called overlapping of the Papagallos or Mendez shales by the Alazan shales; the classification of the San Felipe series as Cretaceous, and the correlation of the San Felipe series with the San Juan limestones. Mr. Durable apparently recognizes the continuity of the great shale formation by his use of the terms "Papagallos" and "Mendez," as equivalent and interchangeable, since the Papagallos Hills in the State of Nuevo Leon and Mendez Station in Northern Vera Cruz, localities at which the shale formation outcrops, and from which the formation names are taken, are approximately 250 miles apart and on opposite sides of the Tamaulipas barrier. The Papagallos shales (evidently referring here to the northern extension only) are said to be non-fossiliferous and no reason for .their Cretaceous classification is given, though in a previous article' they are classified as Cretaceous because at their northernmost outcrop they "have the same relation toward the overlying Tertiary that the Escondido (Cretaceous) has through its whole extent." The Alazan fossil locality was found by me and the first collections from it were sent to Dr. Dall; about 17 species of marine invertebrates were recognized by him, the fauna noted as having a distinct Pacific tincture, and the age of the formation from which they cause pronounced lower Eocene. The outcrop of the shale formation has been traced continuously from this point by me and my assistants into the Panuco River region, where Eocene fossils are reported at a depth of 1,810 ft. in a well at Topila.2 From Topila the formation has been traced continuously north to the Padilla-Jiminez region in Central Tamaulipas. Lithologically, the formation is fairly constant and though I am only generally acquainted with it north of the Padilla-Jiminez region, until definite evidence of the Cretaceous age of the Papagallos shale in its type localities, or of an overlap, is available, it seems to me more logical to consider the shale formation a single stratigraphic unit of Eocene age.

Our continuous search for underground productivity improvements has been brought about by the diminishing ore grades in existing underground mines. The need for more efficient mining methods is a result of the economic problems facing our industry today, and this has caused us to evaluate underground haulage methods which have traditionally been the "bottleneck" in the flow of material from the ore in the natural state to the surface processing facility of any underground mining operation. Small improvements in the face haulage systems have yielded much greater benefits as they relate to overall mine productivity so it's only natural that we are all concerned with the best method of moving ore from the face to the main line haulage. In a recent paper titled "Underground Haulage Trucks - Gaining Momentum Worldwide", Richard A. Thomas concludes that the use of trucks to haul ores in underground mines is on the increase spurred by the convergence of a number of technology advances and economic realities. Perhaps the most important stimulus for the growth of trackless haulage is the high degree of haulage flexibility in underground operations. On the economic side, the demand for higher productivity from underground mines has resulted in larger physical dimensions of haulage roads, that is, higher backs and wider drifts to provide more room for high capacity haulage units. In the process of determining the most effective type of equipment for haulage, the power source must be a major consideration. For the purpose of this paper, we will limit the comparison to rubber-tired trackless haulage vehicles and not try to make a comparison between rubber-tired haulage, continuous haulage systems and rail-mounted haulage. Cost is perhaps the only really measurable factor when making a comparison between electric and diesel haulage. You will find that some costs will be very well defined in absolute terms. In other areas of comparison, cost can be fairly well estimated, and yet in still others, the costs are totally arbitrary. Let's take a look at some of the cost considerations. (Figure 1) first of all, is the initial cost of the equipment. This capital cost quite often is a determining factor in the type of haulage vehicle to be selected, yet this initial cost is perhaps the most insignificant of all costs when evaluating an operation over the long term. Of much greater concern, is the cost of maintenance. This cost will often run three times the original capital investment during the life of a single piece of haulage equipment. This factor can include rebuild to extend the life of the original capital investment, but certainly includes the labor and materials necessary, plus the inventory to keep the equipment in good repair. Perhaps one cost which is now playing an even greater role in the rubber-tired haulage operation, is the cost of fuel. Conoco has recently come up with some rough estimates which indicate that diesel fuel will cost an average of three times the equivalent kilowatt output in direct electric power. Diesel fuel is almost twice the cost of stored electric power. (This of course relates to the efficiencies of charging and recovery of power from lead acid storage cells.) These particular figures of course will vary from one area to another but I think that there is enough significance here to certainly warrant the further study of fuel costs for each particular area or mine. Another cost is breakdown expense. This must be treated differently from maintenance costs because a potentially larger expense is involved, more than just parts and labor. Now we have to deal with the cost of lost production time, which can have a much greater overall effect. Mine plan economics are another cost consideration where we can't make a comparison without looking at specifics. Here you must look at the movement of power centers vs. the flexibility and freedom of movement of vehicles. The determination must be made as to what types of equipment will fit into any predetermined mine plan and if a change in the planned roadway dimensions for the mine plan itself would be more economical so that more efficient type of equipment could be utilized. Finally, two of the most important aspects to be considered with potential ramifications far beyond what we have mentioned previously, is the cost of health and safety, which is really the cost of meeting current and future government regulations, reasonable or otherwise. And of course, when making any consideration here it is impossible to come up with anything more than an educated guess on the cost of meeting the new regulations. Now let's take a look at some of the advantages of diesel vehicles as well as advantages offered by electric vehicles, both battery and cable powered versions (Figure 2). Much of the data used in this comparison is based on experience with three vehicles manufactured by Jeffrey Mining Machinery Division, Dresser Industries. Jeffrey manufactures all three types, each with approximately a 15-ton capacity, even though few of these Jeffrey vehicles are used in uranium mining operations. Much of our experience comes from the 4114 diesel powered RAMCAR which is a 4-wheel drive, articulated steering,vehicle powered by a Caterpillar 3306NA engine and using a powershift transmission. This will be compared with the performance of the Jeffrey 404H battery powered RAMCAR with articulated steering which utilizes a separate 35 HP DC drive motor on each of two wheels with solid-state speed controls, and the final comparison will be made on the Jeffrey 4015 cable-reel shuttle car which is powered by two 60 HP constant

A sampling technique has been developed for procuring a sample of sinter representative of the entire depth of the sintering bed. The sampling method involves the use of an open-bottom metal basket that rides on the grate of the sintering machine and when removed contains a sample of the sintered product. Additional data have been obtained to indicate that the tumbler test is a suitable means of measuring sinter strength. IN the last few years additional sintering facilities have been installed in both the Pittsburgh and the Chicago district of the United States Steel Co. Since the construction of these sintering plants made possible the use of higher percentages of flue-dust sinter in our blast-furnace burdens, it became important to study means of controlling the quality of sinter to obtain optimum results in the blast furnace. For controlling an operating process, it is necessary first to establish standards by which the quality of the product can be judged. For sinter, it appeared that an important property was its strength or its resistance to degradation during transportation and charging into the furnace. Consequently work was undertaken to establish a standard for sinter strength that could be used both for controlling sintering-plant operations and for correlating sinter quality with blast-furnace performance. The first problem in setting up a standard was that of procuring a sample that would be representative of the sinter made under any particular set of conditions at the sintering plant. Since the United States Steel Co. sintering plants discharge the finished sinter either into a large pit or onto a rotary cooler, the sinter becomes inseparably mixed with material sintered 2 hr before or 2 hr afterwards. For this reason the exact identity of the sinter is lost. A sample selected as the cooler is discharged, or as the sinter is removed from the pit, cannot be said to be truly representative of the sinter made at any specific time. Sampling The first attempt to procure a sample that would be representative of a specific sinter mix and of specific operating conditions was made by stopping the Dwight Lloyd sintering machine and removing an entire pallet full of sinter. This method, however, proved very difficult to perform and interfered considerably with the operation of the plant. To overcome this difficulty, a sampling method was devised by technologists at South Works enabling them to secure, without interrupting the sintering operation, a sample of about 1 cu ft of sinter, representative of sinter for the full depth of the sintering bed. The South Works method involves the use of a steel-frame-work basket. A typical basket is shown in Fig. 1. The basket has been used both with and without crossbars along the bottom. As long as the crossbars are in the same direction as the grate bars on the sintering machine they do not interfere with the sintering process. The basket is set on an empty grate of the Dwight Lloyd sintering machine before it passes under the swinging feed spout, see Fig. 2. When the basket is removed after it has travelled the length of the sintering machine, it contains the sample. Just before the basket is removed, the sinter is scored and chipped to facilitate removal of the sample from the sinter bed. A view of the basket after its removal is shown in Fig. 3. Although the sampling method was originally designed for use on a Dwight Lloyd sintering machine, it can also be used on the Greenawalt type of machine. When used on the Greenawalt-type machine, the basket is placed on the sintering grate before the charging car passes over it, and finally it is removed just before the pan is dumped. Testing After a method of obtaining a representative sample of sinter had been developed, the next step was to select a method of measuring its strength. The irregular shape and size of the sinter pieces precluded the use of a simple compression test for determining strength; consequently, the shatter test and tumbler test were investigated. To perform the shatter test, a sample of sinter, approximately 5 lb, is dropped from a hinged-bottom box at a height of 3 ft onto a steel plate. The broken sinter is sieve-analyzed after a specified number of drops. The tumbler test is performed with the use of a standard ASTM coke-tumbling drum. The drum is 3 ft in diam and is equipped with two lifter bars diametrically opposite one another on the inner periphery of the drum. The drum is rotated at a speed of 24 rpm for 200 revolutions, and after tumbling the sample is sieve-analyzed. To express as single numbers the results of sieve analyses after shattering or tumbling, the method suggested by R. E. Powers1 was employed. This method involved plotting the size of the sieve openings on a logarithmic scale and the cumulative per cent larger than each sieve on a probability scale as described by J. B. Austin.' Seventeen members of the Board were present, and the Secretary of the Institute. During part of the meeting, seven other Members of the Institute were also present as guests. After extended discussion, the Board approved the general principles embodied in the War Minerals bill, and recommended the passage of a bill embodying these principles. The vote stood 14 in favor and two opposed, one member not voting. On motion, duly seconded, it was RESOLVED, that in connection with the appointment of the proposed War Minerals Administrator, the attention off the War Minerals Committee be called to the importance of selecting a man trained in the mining and metallurgical industry, but having no pecuniary interest in these industries. John V. N. Dorr was elected Director to fill the vacancy caused by the election of Robert M. Raymond as Vice-President. Charles W. Goodale was elected First Vice-President. George C. Stone was elected Treasurer. Rossiter W. Raymond was appointed Secretary Emeritus. Bradley Stoughton was elected Secretary. The following committees were elected: Executive Committee, Finance Committee, Committee on Papers and Publications, Committee on Membership, Library Committee, Committee on Nominations, Committee on Safety, Sanitation and Welfare. DURING the early years of the present century a notable interest appeared in American industry in the matter of recovering and render-ing profitable byproducts of manufacturing operations. Among the byproducts of reduction of sulfide ores in many plants large amounts of sulfur dioxide gas were available. In certain instances the concentration of SO2 in the gases evolved was, or could be made, sufficient to make them suitable for manufacturing sulfuric acid. At the Anaconda Reduction works such a condition existed. Large tonnages of copper concentrate were being roasted and the roaster gases were available and suitable as a source of sulfuric acid. Earlier work on a large scale at Martinez, Calif., and in the Ducktown region, Tennessee, had shown the feasibility of manufacturing sulfuric acid from the SO2 contained in gases arising from the reduction of copper sulfide ores. In California and Tennessee the acid found a ready market in manufacture of fertilizers, while the situation regarding disposal of the sulfuric acid was quite different at Anaconda. No local use for acid existed, and a commodity of such low value could not stand freight charges to consuming centers. There was a very large accumulation of sand tailings from the gravity concentration mill below the plant at Anaconda. This material, made by the comparatively crude methods in use up to about 1915, contained about 13 lb. of copper per ton, largely as sulfide minerals. In 1912 serious research work toward recovery of this copper was instituted and after about two years of laboratory and pilot-plant development, a process for accomplishing it was perfected. This process involved roast-ing the sand tailings, leaching the roasted tailings with sulfuric acid, and throwing out the copper by passing the solutions over scrap iron. Under this plan each ton of sand required the introduction of about 70 lb. of 60° Be. sulfuric acid.

The extent of losses, due to evaporation, sediment, and water, in crude oil stored in steel tanks, is a very interesting question, and particularly so at this time, when every reasonable measure should be employed to eliminate all possible losses of this important natural product. Available information on this subject is incomplete; e.g., during the development of the Cushing Field, considerable surplus oil was stored in steel tanks, but from time to time, owing to changes in weather, some losses by evaporation and short storage room on the leases, these tanks were topped out, thus rendering inaccurate any system designed to determine the average rate of evaporation or other losses of the oil over a given period. Furthermore, the losses, as shown by the records at the time, as a result of hasty gages, failed to take into account the temperature and gravity of the oil. Losses may be classified roughly as occurring from evaporation, presence of sediment and water, and leakage. The coefficient of expansion and contraction of crude oil, in relation to temperature conditions, is of material importance; also, the rate of evaporation is dependent upon the gravity of the oil, as the escape of the lighter hydrocarbons in fresh Cushing oil, of from 40 to 42 gravity, on a warm day is considerable, and from available records of temporary storage, it is safe to assume that a loss of 1 to 11/2 per cent. in volume will easily occur in light crude oil of Cushing grade over a period of 6 months, including the summer season. The presence of sediment, water, and other impurities, in the oil will also cause more or less deterioration in quality, particularly when the fresh production is run direct from the gage tanks, or from the wells on the lease to steel storage, as is often the case when an oil field is being rapidly developed. The bad oil will settle to the bottom of the tanks and may be determined by thiefing and running a centrifuge test on the sample. The amount of water in the oil depends entirely on the conditions under which it is produced. Sometimes in large producing wells, with heavy gas pressure, some water may come in with the oil, particularly if the well has been drilled to the top of a water sand. Under these conditions, cut oil is often produced, which, if not settled out, is carried over into the steel tanks. The losses by leakage in steel tanks are difficult to determine, for
