IT is unlikely that any oil field has ever threatened the future course of the oil industry as does Kettleman today. It seems that nature has striven to outdo herself in combining in this field every possible factor conducive to a tremendous production of the petroleum product in greatest demand-gasoline. This field already has 13,700 acres of proved land and an oil zone of known thickness of 1400 ft. It has wells yielding several thousand barrels of oil of virtually motor fuel grade, together with millions of cubic feet of gas at almost unheard of pressures. The field would have been the. answer to an oil man's prayer in times of under-supply, but now it is the oil man's nightmare, for drilled in -the manner of most other fields and without regard to available markets for oil and gas, the greatest physical and economic losses in the his¬tory of the oil industry will result.

In an earlier day, a moderate-sized 600 tpd mine could easily require 60 working faces and might use five supervisors. The miner had a tonnage rate as an incentive and was largely his own boss. With the advent of conventional mining machine crews, the typical pattern of resource used changed radically. The number of work places could be cut by a factor of ten, but supervision only by a factor of somewhere around three, or at most, five. Obviously, supervision was increased. Capital use rose at the same time by a factor of approximately eight. Materials used, such as powder and bits, probably in- creased in both quality and unit cost, too. It certainly required a better-trained man to run the machines, but fewer miners were needed. It is clear that each input factor such as land, labor, capital and management, has changed significantly and it would be foolish to attribute all the gain to improved machines. However, concentration of work was a vital consideration in the change, sketched above, and such focusing of work in fewer areas could not have occurred without high capacity mining machines.

CENTRIFUGAL force has been utilized for the dewatering of fine coal for over 50 years by means of machines commonly called centrifugal dryers. In any centrifuge the coal and water are subjected to a spinning action which usually increases in intensity as the coal progresses through the machine. This spinning action, or the centrifugal force that it induces, tears water away from coal particles and produces a dewatered coal. The effectiveness of the dewatering action for any particular machine is governed by the size-consist of the coal and the centrifugal force imparted to the water on the coal.

Mzasurements of the surface diffusion coefficients of metals have been made. Diffusion profiles for the Ag-Ag system were obtained by means of a radioactive point source and a precision auto-radiographic technique. The activation energy for silver self diffusion (=8.1 kcal per mole) is lower than that previously reported (-10 kcal per mole) on poly crystalline wire by Nickerson and Parker. The bresent data indicate an effect due to parasitic volume diffusion at temperatures above 500°C. RELATIVELY few measurements have been made of the surface self-diffusion coefficients of metals. Nickerson and arker' measured the diffusion of silver over the surface of poly crystalline wires and estimated that the activation energy was 10.3 kcal per mole. Winegard and chalmers2 carried out measurements on both polycrystalline and single crystal surfaces but did not report a value of the activation energy. They found, however, that at temperatures between 250" and 400°C the diffusion coefficients were on the order of lo-' sq cm per sec and that there was an acceleration of the migration of silver on the polycrystalline sample when a change of surface shape occurred. Winegard and Chalmers used an autoradiographic technique, hereafter designated ARG, and Nickerson and Parker used a surface scanning geiger counter in order to determine the diffusion profiles. More recently, Hackerman and simpson3 measured the surface self-diffusion coefficient of copper at a single temperature (750°C), and the value of the diffusivity (- 10-5 sq cm per sec) is in agreement with that given by jostein from his thermal grooving measurements. This paper reports the results of an investigation of the surface self-diffusion coefficients of silver over a large temperature range and describes the adaptation of autoradiographic (ARG) techniques for the determination of diffusion profiles obtained from a radioactive point source. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experimental procedure is a modification of the method employed by Hackerman and simpson3 in their measurements on copper. A brief description of their technique is as follows: A radioactive needle which sinters to the surface during the diffusion an- neal serves as the source of diffusing atoms. After the diffusion run the needle is removed and the surface is scanned with a shielded counting arrangement. The diffusion profiles reported in this paper were obtained by a modification of the above procedure which employs a precision ARG technique. Previous investigations in this laboratory and elsewhere51B have shown that under carefully controlled developing conditions and by the use of calibration sources a linear relation exists between the concentration of the isotope and the photographic density for values below unity. The use of ARG under these conditions has advantages over the counter scanning method in that cumbersome shielding and requirements for great mechanical precision of the scanner are eliminated. Also the ARG gives a complete picture of the surface which is advantageous in studies of anisotropic diffusion. A recording microdensitometer having a 0.1 p wide slit was employed. At low temperatures the disturbing effects of subsurface radiations are negligible. The diffusion anneals are carried out in the cell shown in Fig. 1. The needle is formed by grinding down a 1.0 mm rod of high-purity silver until a tip of 0.2 mm radius or smaller is formed. This tip is plated withA"' which becomes the source of the diffusing atoms that are detected by ARG. The needle carrier and the crystal holder, Fig. 1 are constructed of quartz and ports are provided in the holder pedestal which allow free vapor circulation ((2.0 oz) and the carrier apron fits snugly over the crystal holder cap, insuring that the needle does not move and scratch the surface. Temperatures are provided by a stabilized tubular furnace which can be quickly positioned around the cell, thus bringing the crystal up to temperature in a time that is short compared to the diffusing times. The diffusion anneals range from 2 hr for the high-temperature samples to about 25 hr for those at the lowest temperature. The possibility of vapor transport of the radioactive metal as a contributing factor in the diffusion profile was investigated in two ways. One method was to suspend the needle directly over a dummy sample, raise the temperature, for periods of time equal to the diffusion times, and then take an auto-radiograph of the surface. Negligible radioactivity appeared. In the second method a thin slot in the crystal face on one side of the source provided a "cong path" for surface diffusion. If evaporation was the primary source of surface atoms the region of radioactivity around the source would be symmetrical. This was not the case. The profile dipped abruptly at the edge of the slot but on the other side of the source the usual diffusion profile appeared.

AS I told you in the chapter on salts, saltpeter is a mixture composed of many substances extracted with fire- and water from arid and manurial soils, from that growth which exudes from new walls or from that loosened soil that is found in tombs or uninhabited caves where the rain cannot enter. It is my belief that it is engendered in these soils from an airy moisture that is drunk in and absorbed by the earthy dryness. Considering its effects, I do not know how to decide and say exactly what the nature of saltpeter is. The learned and very wise physicians find it salty and with a subtle sharpness both in taste and in their medical experiments. Considering its strong biting qualities, they decide to say that it is of a hot and dry nature; on the other hand when they see that it is engendered from the air and that when touched by fire it becomes inflammable and vaporous, and rises with a fearful impetus when mixed in powder for military guns, it manifestly shows itself to be of a hot and moist airy nature. And then when they see that it is shining and transparent with whiteness and is fusible in every fire in a manner corresponding to a thing of a watery nature, and since it. is heavy, it seems that it can be said to be watery in nature. To this is added the experience of touch and of the great cooling action which it has on water in summertime when wine is to be cooled, and since it crushes and breaks with but little pressure, it might be thought to be earthy in nature; especially when it is seen to change into a hard, white stone when burned with an equal amount of sulphur. Thus it seems that every one of the elemental qualities is predominant in it. Now the ancients called this, or a similar thing, nitrum. [150] Pliny, in Book XXXI of his Natural History, has said that it was a thing not much different from salt, that doctors do not seem to have yet known its nature, that it is found in various places, and that the best is found in Macedonia. But among the moderns and especially in our regions, it is not known today what it is that Pliny and other writers refer -to, since according to the aforesaid Pliny and other ancient writers it is a natural mineral. Some say that in place of, the natural kind the artificial will serve for the same medicinal purposes, since it has the same nature and is perhaps more powerful.

Granting that about 600,000,000 bbl. of light oil will be produced in the United States this year and taking the Bureau of Mines' statement that 71/2 per cent. of the total crude production will be lost before the finished gasoline is shipped from the refinery, the volumetric evaporation will be 45,000,000 bbl. of the cream of the gasoline. This is a ConseNative figure and is equivalent to 1,890,000,000 gal. The real value of this liquid is at least 150 per cent. of the value of an equal volume of motor fuel. At only 10 c. per gal., the value lost is $189,000,000; at 15 e. per gal. the loss is $283,000,000. If 750,000,000 bbl. of light and heavy oil are produced here this year and the average price per barrel is $1.333, the gross return to producers will be $1,000,000,000 and the net returns about $200,000,000, if the cost of production is only $1 per barrel. Thus, the evaporation bill is about 20 per cent. of the gross income and is equal to the net income of the crude-oil producers. Two other comparisons with popular phases of the petroleum industry will help give an adequate conception of the evaporation problem. These are: cost of preventing evaporation compared to cost of cracked gasoline and volume of gasoline evaporated compared to volume of gasoline manufactured from natural gas. When gasoline is manufactured from heavy oils by the cracking process, there are two important divisions of the total cost of the product: the manufacturing cost, such as plant cost, operation, maintenance, etc., and the cost of the barrel of heavy oil, from which the cracked gasoline is made. In preventing evaporation loss the cost first mentioned enters into the total cost, but the second cost is eliminated; that is, no charge is necessary for stock from which to manufacture the saving. A detailed analysis of these two costs on a large scale shows that the net income from a dollar spent in preventing evaporation loss from the lease through the refinery is twice the net income from a dollar spent in cracking. The following outline has been prepared by request with the help of leading professors, business men, and social workers. It is arranged to cover 64 or preferably 96 class periods-four to eight month's work at the rate of two or three periods a week. More time would be desirable, but less time would be better than nothing. Certain topics must be omitted, especially if the assigned number of periods are lessened, where time is lacking. Many subjects are suggested in order to permit of choice and adaptation to local conditions; this is merely a suggestive outline. The course should be supplemented y engineering trips to study certain industrial conditions and the betterment work of selected companies-and social agencies. It should also be accompanied by brief surveys and practical service by students along the lines indicated. Reports and essays should be written. This is not a regular course in sociology and economics. It is a course in "human engineering" and should probably be directed by an engineering professor of large practical experience. Other members of the faculty, sociologists, economists, selected engineers, employers, labor leaders or others may be requested to lead certain periods, as desired. Care has been taken to avoid biased judgment in selection of topics and references.* * The authors of this outline have compiled an exhaustive list of references to books and periodicals relating to each group of topics. Lack of space prevents the publication of these lists in the BULLETIN, but they will gladly be supplied on request.-Ed.

I. INTRODUCTION. THESE impurities are perhaps the most important things in steel-especially steel made by the oxidation processes-the effect of which has not been at least approximately determined. By oxidation processes I mean the Bessemer and Siemens-Martin, during which the metalloids in the charge are removed by oxidation. It has been truly said that it is a clear advantage to have a new name for a new thing. To secure this and to economize space, let us adopt the name sonim (plural sonims) to designate the solid non-metallic impurities existing in steel or other metal. I would define a sonim as a solid non-metallic portion of matter existing as an impurity in metal. A piece of sand, brick, clay, or such material, imbedded in metal, would be considered as a foreign body, not as an impurity, and therefore not a sonim. The studies of sonims of which the results have been published hitherto, have been made chiefly or wholly on finished or at least on cold steel, without much, if any, regard to the specific methods by which the steel was made. While many of the results so obtained are valuable, they give little help in determining the cause, effect, or cure of the disease. It is not enough, in such a study, to know merely the commercial name of the process; for within the field of each process lies a great number of possible variations, each of which will yield a result differing in some respect from all others; and the control of sonims is particularly dependent. on the metallurgical treatment of the metal, because of the inability of analytical chemistry to throw much light on their presence, condition, and effect, as they usually occur in commercial steels. The microscope aids more, perhaps, than chemistry in their study.

RECENTLY completed experimental work, carried out in the department of geology at the University of Wisconsin, aiming at a prevention of silicosis in industry has been reported in the American Mineralogist. A vast amount of work on silicosis has been reported in the literature, the clinical aspects having been especially well covered. A host of critical observations have been made on the variations in the nature of the silicosis problem in different environments, and a great deal of valuable experimental work has helped to clarify these observations. At present a greater amount of information of a critical sort is available than ever before, which affords a more sound basis for interpretive thought. It has been observed in industry that essentially pure silica dust gives rise to silicosis. Jones would modify this conclusion to place the responsibility on sericite, a silicate mineral present in the siliceous dust. Material such as granite dust, which carries a high free silica (quartz) content, is also a silicosis hazard. But sericite, too, is usually present in granite. In general it is widely believed that silicosis is caused by the presence in the lung of silicic acid regardless of the source. This view is adopted here.

ALTHOUGH the present economic depression is felt in the petroleum industry, probably as much as in any other branch of American industry, the Petroleum Section of the Institute was well represented at the general sessions on Monday and at all of the seven division sessions on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The seven sessions of the Division were so arranged as not to conflict and thus permitted members to hear the programs of all sessions.* The first meeting of the Petroleum Division was held on Tuesday afternoon; a joint session on engineering research and production engineering. THE manufacture of nickel-clad steel plate and the fabrication of articles from it has progressed far enough to permit a general description of the working methods used. The manufacture of sheets made up of layers of nickel and steel is not new as a sheet of this character was patented in Germany in 1893. Present development differs mainly in the size and finish of the product. The earlier light-gage highly finished products have been limited in their application due to their similarity, in certain respects, to electro-plated and highly finished alloy sheets. The new product is a relatively heavy plate 1/4 or 3/s in. thick and heavier, with one side coated with nickel, the weight of nickel being of the order of 10 per cent of the whole. The finish is that of hot-rolled steel plate.

Inland Steel Coal Co.'s system of applying a gypsum/fiberglass rib and roof sealant with standard rock dusting equipment will be outlined. The criteria for use included acceptability of results, flexibility of equipment, ease of application, and economics. Material is conveyed dry until the gypsum, fiberglass, and water are combined at the discharge end of the rock dust hose.

As was true with many mining companies, the management of Tennessee Copper Co. followed with interest the successful application of AN-FO as an explosive in coal stripping, construction, open-pit mining, and finally in underground salt mines. Since Tennessee Copper's operations required about 1,250,000 lb of dynamite annually, the potential savings in explosives costs that could be realized by switching to AN-FO could not be ignored. From a cautious start, AN-FO is now being used for stoping, development work and secondary blasting in all mines of Tennessee Copper Co. AN-FO accounts for 80% of the explosives used in such work. Fragmentation, fumes, crew acceptance, and cost savings have been quite attractive without any decrease in safety.

Empirical equations for surface tension of propane and normal butane as functions of reduced temperature are obtained from experimental data. Another correlation relating surface tension to enthalpy of vaporization is given for these two compounds. In addition, new paracbor numbers are calculated for the normal paraffin hydrocarbons. These numbers are utilized for the calculation of interfacial tension of two-component systems as functions of pressure and temperature, using a modified form of Weinaug-Katz equation. The experimental data for two binary systems are approximated by the correlation. From these results it is found that the interfacial tension in the high-pressure region remains extremely low at large pressure decrements below the critical pressure. Thus, it appears that condensate systems may have flow characteristics almost like single-phase conditions even though the pressure is within the two-phase region. Experimental data have shown that interfacial tension divided by density difference approaches zero as the critical pressure is approached. A calculation of wetting-phase saturations indicates that the saturation gradient at the two-phase contact becomes increasingly abrupt as the critical pressure is approached. DISCUSSION Prediction of the surface and interfacial tension of the light hydrocarbons and of two-component hydrocarbon mixtures at various temperatures and pressures may be made if other physical properties are known. Extensive experimental work on single-component and binary systemsl is the basis for the correlations outlined in this paper. Interfacial tension is defined as the specific surface-free energy between two phases of unlike fractional composition, while surface tension is defined as the specific surface-free energy between two phase:; of the same fractional composition. The usual definitions relating interfacial tension to a liquid-liquid interface and surface tension to a gas-liquid interface are not clearly defined when the critical region is included, and there is no sharp distinction between a gas and a liquid phase. Interfacial tension is probably the most important single force that makes one-half to one-third of the total oil actually in place in a reservoir rock unrecoverable by conventional gas-drive or waterflood methods. A rough estimate of this figure for the United States is 100 billion bbl. Interfacial tension presently is used by petroleum engineers in the estimation of saturation gradients at the gas-oil contact and at the oil-water contact. The data in this paper should prove useful for estimates of reserves involving gas-oil contacts. Relative permeability undoubtedly is influenced by interfacial tension, for sufficiently small values. These data should be useful in determining how small the values are In addition, these data should eventually add to our fundamental knowledge of surfaces. At the critical point, all surface excesses approach zero and the thickness becomes very large. SINGLE-COMPONENT SYSTEMS It has been observed1 that the following relationships are good approximations to the physical properties of propane and n-butane.

The important part that dissolved oxygen plays in the cyanide treatment of gold and silver ores is commonly recognized by most metallurgists and mill men. But heretofore there has been no simple method on which the mill man could rely for determining the amount of oxygen in the various mill solutions. A few methods are adaptable to the laboratory, such as the gasometric1 determination by actually measuring the oxygen, Winkler's2 iodometric method, and Schutzenberger's3 method, which depends on the reducing action of sodium hyposulfite on a blue solution of indigo carmine; but these are not readily adaptable to the needs of the mill man and cannot be applied to cyanide solutions without modification. The gasometric method is the most accurate but it takes too long to complete a determination. White's4 method (a colorimetric method that depends on the degree of coloration imparted to a solution of pyro-gallic acid in the presence of caustic soda) although much more rapid than any of the methods named, often gives misleading results on account of grading of colors of different solutions, which nearly always contain various kinds of salts. The method herein described was devised for the use of the mill man, the aim being to develop a simple, practical, accurate method. A year ago, Marshall and Bird presented a paper in which a new method of measuring the agglutinating power of coal was described.' The procedure used was to determine the strength of a button containing 10 parts sand and one part coal, formed by carbonizing the mixture in a crucible in an electric furnace. The result of the determination was reported as the total weight in grams required to bring about complete destruction of the button. Correlations were shown between the agglutinating value and some of the characteristics of the different coals that were investigated. This agglutinating test has been in use fairly continuously during the past five years for coals of widely differing coking qualities, and it has shown reasonably concordant results accurate enough for commercial use, although there are many features of the test which should have further scientific study. During the past year a study has been made of some coals of low coking strengths, and incidental to the main investigation some data which appear to be of interest and value were obtained on the loss in agglutinating power caused by exposure to the air. Three coals were investigated, all of which were of the Tertiary age; two were from one field in Asia, and one from a field in the United States. The three were similar, as shown by the proximate and ultimate analyses in Table 1 (moisture-free basis). Coals SA and RA generally contain about 5 per cent. moisture and coal P about 3.5 per cent. moisture on the as-received basis. The large difference in the ash contents of the coals, amounting to practically 10 per cent. between SA and RA, and P, makes difficult a direct comparison of their qualities. In the second section of Table 1 the figures have been put upon an ash-free basis., This table shows that these coals are closely alike. THE large increase in the use of selective flotation as contrasted with the collective flotation of a few years ago has focussed attention on the desirability of achieving accurate control of the pH of mill circuits. Although it is well-known that alkaline circuits result in dropping pyrite and that acid circuits conversely float it, but drop the gangue, there is little that is known, beyond question, ass to the action of the acidity or alkalinity of the circuits. A complete answer is not available at present but experiments -are now in progress at the University of Utah, whose aim is to find out what the effect is on recovery of a change in hydrogen-ion concentration and how this change is brought about. Broadly speaking, a change in hydrogen-ion concen¬tration seems to affect either the mineral surface, as was suggested by A. W. Fahrenwald in his paper "Surface Reactions in Flotation"1 (TRANS. 70, 647) or the attachment of the collecting agent on the mineral surface.

I take pleasure in transmitting herewith "Petroleum Development and Technology in 1927," in which we have attempted to set out in a series of 40 papers with attendant discussions the advances made in Production Engineering and Refinery Engineering during the year. The volume also contains a digest of round table discussions on Petroleum Engineering Research problems and Petroleum Engineering Education. In addition to the above we set out in 16 papers a review of production of each producing area of the United States and of the more important foreign countries, together with a review of the world's production and forecasts for 1928. We also include 8 papers on the Economics of the oil industry. The papers and discussions included herein represent the contributions of more than 200 engineers, including the foremost in each line. These papers were presented at technical sessions held in Fort Worth in October, 1927, and at the annual meeting in New York in February, 1928. We desire to express our thanks and appreciation to all those who have contributed to this volume. As in previous years, we have attempted to emphasize the value of both written and impromptu discussions. -We have made a practice of returning all impromptu discussions to the authors for correction and amplification, and because of this practice we feel that the discussions contained herein are in very presentable and readable form. It was decided by the nominat,ing committee when meeting for thc purpose of nominating officers for 1928 to eliminate the vice-chairrnanship for Transportation Engineering, as that branch of the industry seemed to come more naturally under the activities of the American Petroleum Institute. It was also decided by this committee to institute a new vice-chairmanship for Petroleum Engineering Research. Wc have had heretofore round table discussions on engineering research, but through the newly created vice-chairmanship, to which Mr. L. C. Uren was elected, we expect to have more comprehensive sessions on engineering research than heretofort.

Discussion of the paper Of ROBERT H. BEDFORD and WILLIAM HAGUE, presented at the Salt Lake meeting, August, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 92, August, 1914, pp. 1807 to 1816. W. L. SAUNDERS, New York, N. Y. (communication to the Secretary *) . -Messrs. Bedford and Hague have given us a very interesting and practical paper. No better excuse for such a paper could be desired than the statement made that the expense of drilling. in this mine is one-third of the cost of delivering the ore at the mill. This statement. should be written in red letters, because it applies to a great many mines besides the one referred to and because it is generally true that in a mining plant, as also in papers read before the Institute, more attention by fat is given to the metallurgical side of mining than to the excavation of the ore, and no study of the excavation work is properly made that does not involve a careful inquiry into the merits of the rock drill used. Next in importance to the selection of a good rock drill, in a case where the actual drilling cost is one-third the cost of delivering the ore, is that. the drill should be maintained in order and kept up to its highest efficiency. The best rock chill may run down in efficiency through accidents, wear, or other conditions which are sometimes beyond supervision or control. The machine is usually in the hands of men who know how to get workout of it, not men who know how it works. The best drill runners are not machinists,. but miners. They could not tell you how the valve operates or the principle of the rotation, but they know how to get the work done. A testing machine, particularly the type described in this paper, may he of the greatest value in maintaining a uniform state of efficiency.

Zinc oxide, an n-type semiconductor, and nickel oxide, a p-type semiconductor, were studied in electrostatic separation experiments in pure and doped forms. In addition, pure potassium chloride and potassium chloride containing one volume per cent silver were also investigated. It was found, in agreement with theory, that the presence of dopants in the oxides could either increase or decrease the electrical conductivity of the base compounds and, thus, control the response of these particles to electrostatic separation. Further, it was shown that the same dopant in the n- and p-type semiconductors produced opposite conductivity effects; again in accord with theory. Finally, it was found that the presence of dispersed silver particles in the normally insulator phase potassium chloride produced sufficient electronic conductivity to cause the silver containing particles to respond as would materials possessing "medium-type" conductivities.
