The total production of petroleum in the Gulf Coast in 1927 was 54.541.180 bbl., .5.655.665 bbl. more than in 1926. The Texas total was 49.129.910 bbl. (Table 1) and the Louisiana tota1 5.411.270 bbl. (Table 2). Louisiana production decreased 278.028 bbl., compared with that of 1926. Spindletop produced nearly 44 per cent. of the Texas total. The well-known formulae of screening efficiency and circulating load calculations in closed crushing circuits were exploited to achieve graphical estimation of these parameters. Three basic charts were proposed and constructed. The first one is for the regular closed circuits where the new feed goes to the crusher. The second is for the reverse closed circuits in which the new feed reported to the screen is free of screen undersize particles. The third chart controls the reverse circuits when they are receiving new incoming feeds containing undersize material. Compound circuits were also reanalyzed and a concept of equivalent simple circuit was introduced to enable graphical manipulation of these complex circuits with the help of the aforementioned charts

An experimental and theoretical treatment of the depressing effect of inorganic electrolytes on the amine flotation of quartz is presented. Experimental data obtained for the amine flotation of quartz as a function of pH with potassium nitrate as depressant was used to test the models for the effectiveness of inorganic ions as depressants. The validity of commonly used assumptions are examined. The surface tension data obtained for dodecylammonium acetate solutions as a function of KNO3, concentration indicated that the collector adsorption on bubble cannot be neglected in the treatments, since this adsorption changes significantly with the addition of the inorganic electrolyte. It also indicated the possibility of significant changes in the specific adsorption potential of the collector occurring with the addition of inorganic electrolytes.

THE liability for damages to the surface caused by subsidence is an ever present threat in all underground mining. In ordinary lode mining, this threat rarely materializes into an action, due to the method of mining metaliferous ores, the dip of the veins, and the nature of the ground itself. In the mining of coal, however, this threat is very real. The coal frequently lies close to the surface, in beds underlying large areas of land the surface of which is suitable for agricultural or urban development. Furthermore, the coal is generally mined by the "room and pillar" method and when the pillars of coal are removed, the subjacent support is destroyed. This question of the duty of surface support has now become a very live one in Colorado. What was waste prairie land a few years ago, has become valuable agricultural land dotted here and there with growing towns. Frequent references. will be made here to Colorado conditions and adjudicated cases, but those conditions and cases and the conclusions to be drawn therefrom are equally applicable to all coal-mining states. Briefly stated, the question: is "Does the owner of the substrata or underlying mineral owe any duty of surface support to the owner of the superjacent strata or surface?" There is no absolute duty of support owed by the mineral owner and this assertion is made with full knowledge of numerous expressions to the contrary by courts of Pennsylvania, Illinois, Colorado and other coal-mining states. Whether or not any duty exists depends upon the circumstances surrounding each case, and since in the nature of things those circumstances are rarely identical, there can be no absolute rule.

In designing structural members of steel and some other materials the design engineer has available recognized values of elastic modulus and safe working stress that may be substituted in well-known engineering formulas to give him desired cross-sectional areas and deflections for a particular part. Zinc, on the other hand, has no generally recognized modulus. It flows under continuously applied loads. Therefore, the designer of structural members must use a range of working stresses depending on the continuous load and the amount of permissible distortion. The only method of obtaining these values is by creep testing. Creep testing of zinc has been carried on for some 20 years by this laboratory, covering a wide range of zinc and zinc alloys. Types of test included tension, compression, and simple and cantilever beams at temperatures ranging from o to I50°C. Specimen conditions ranged from as-cast or as-rolled to accelerated aged in steam or dry air. Effects of plating were investigated also. It is not the intention of this paper to expound all these factors but rather to present the final data on well-known zinc die-casting alloys and to suggest means of applying these data to engineering design. Early Work In the early work on creep testing of zinc, the direct-loading tension method was used. However, direct loading of die castings was unsatisfactory because of the high loads required. For instance, a standard die-cast tension bar having a cross-sectional area of about 0.049 sq. in. would require a direct load of about 1000 lb. for a unit stress of 20,000 lb. per sq. in. Also, tests were made at nominal room temperature, but normal variations caused fluctuations greater than those due to experimental error or other causes, so that control of this variable within ±1/2°C. seemed essential. These two factors led to the development of an apparatus described by J. Ruzicka,' in which the specimens were loaded by means of a lever and were held at constant temperature by means of an oil bath. While Ruzicka's apparatus yielded excellent check results, it seemed desirable to have some setup by which literally hundreds of die-cast specimens could be tested at the same time. This would permit the conducting of a number of low-load tests designed to run 10 years or longer and still leave capacity for current high-load work. Beam testing in a constant-temperature room was the answer. Test Method Preliminary work indicated that die-cast beams of various lengths and cross scctions yielded the same result within reasonable limits regardless of whether they were tested as simple beams, uniformly loaded beams, or cantilevers. A method of top slicing has been devised at the Miami Copper Co.'s mine at Miami, Aria., which differs radically in some ways from the customary methods of top slicing. The area of that section of the orebody in which top slicing is used is about 800 ft. square. The ore, while for the most part soft, is, nevertheless, considerably harder than the capping. The latter is siliceous, seldom containing any clay or other binding material, and breaks into fine particles so that it runs like sand if given the opportunity. Because of these facts, and because the ore is above the average grade of the mine ore, it has been mined by top slicing. Haulage levels are opened up 150 ft. apart, vertically, with two sub-levels between at 50-ft. intervals, to facilitate the putting up of ore chutes. These sublevels are used during slicing for distributing air in the ventilation system. On the haulage level the drifts are spaced on 50-ft. centers, and raises along these drifts are also spaced on 50-ft. centers, except the incline raises as hereafter noted. The raises are cribbed where necessary. Where the wear will be excessive, 1/4-in. iron plates are spiked to the top of every third set of cribbing, for its protection. When top slicing was first used, an attempt was made to carry a slicing face from fifty to several hundred feet long. Timber and other supplies were brought in through long drifts from an auxiliary shaft. Great difficulty was experienced in keeping these drifts open, the side pressure breaking the posts and the top weight breaking both caps and posts. Furthermore, the men could not work efficiently while these drifts were being repaired. The slicing faces advanced irregularly, due to varying conditions, and in many ways the results were not all that could be desired. It was then decided to divide the slicing area into blocks 200 ft. square and this was later changed to 250 ft. square. At the center of each block a two-compartment raise is put up as a supply raise, the compartments being 2 ft. 6 in. and 4 ft. by 4 ft. 4 in., the smaller being used as a manway. Conservationists have launched an attack on the mining law of 1872, accusing it of permitting the min- ing industry to rob the public and despoil the environment while doing it. Michael McCloskey, executive director of the Sierra Club, and one who has made known his opposition to the law said, "environmentalists are unified in their agreement that repeal . . . is one of conservation's most urgent tasks . . . ." Charles H. Callahan, executive vice president of the National Audubon Society, paralleled McCloskey's sentiments, calling the law a "disgrace" and a "give-away." In his opening statement before the Senate Interior Committee, Chairman Henry M. Jackson (D-Wash.) said that legislation pending before the committee would put the hard rock minerals under a leasing system as is the case with oil and gas.

NATURE endowed the Niagara Frontier with great resources but it was the molding of these resources by the early pioneers that assured its future development. This great industrial district of New York stretches along about fifty miles of shore line on the eastern end of Lake Erie and the Niagara River, embracing the two counties of Erie and Niagara, with the city of Buffalo about in the center. This location at the junction of the eastern end of the Great Lakes and the western boundary of the State, a great focal point of land and water, transportation, guaranteed the development of the Frontier. Although the first white settlers came to this section in 1784, it was not until after the turn of the nineteenth century that real development started. Perhaps the most significant influence in the early days was the completion of the Erie Canal between Buffalo and Albany in 1825. THE phase diagram of the Ge-Te system was first investigated by Klemm and Frischmuth.' They arrived at the phase diagram shown in Fig. 1 indicating the presence of a peritectic phase boundary at the 50 at. pct Ge composition. Later, Schubert and Fricke2 obtained data which suggested to them the possible existence of a eutectic at about 55 at. pct Ge. In order to resolve these differences, we have carefully studied this system in the region 40 to 60 at. pct Ge using both the conventional thermal analysis technique and a new solidification technique.3y4 The alloys were prepared from semiconductor grade germanium and 99.999+ Te by reacting the elements in evacuated, graphite coated, vycor tubes. The samples were placed in a thermal analysis apparatus described elsewhere4 and cooling curves were taken of each alloy to determine the liquidus surface. The development of a process for the treatment of telluride concentrates at Emperor Gold Mining Co. Vatukoula, is discussed. The concentrate is produced by flotation in cyanide solution immediately after milling. Two stages of cleaning are employed and a high-grade concentrate is produced usually containing more than 50% of the precious metal. The process developed in the first instance involved batch roasting followed by batch leaching in strong cyanide solution, recovering gold and silver only. The procedure currently employed is chemical oxidation of the tellurides using hypochlorite as the oxidant in a basic solution of a caustic soda and sodium carbonate. After oxidation the gold and silver are recovered by cyanidation. The residue is then leached with sodium sulfide and elemental tellurium precipitated with sodium sulfite.

INTRODUCTION It is sometimes said that "mines are made, and not found." I rather doubt that the exploration geologist would be overly sympathetic to that statement, and, of course, like most one-liners it is only partly true. Access to different financial markets are important at the mineral prospect stage. The modern mine financier has a much more complex, and interesting, job than the financiers of an earlier era, for example, the Canadian financiers of the 40's and 50's who had one simple set of options; i.e. float a company, promote it, and sell an equity stock issue, and then promote it some more. QUALITIES OF A FINANCIER Because technical people are seldom taught financing in their basic training, and because they are usually not involved in it until at quite a senior level in their careers, the whole field often acquires a certain mystique. The engineering professions have too often believed financing is the province of the accountant or financial executive and just as we in the technical world are often too quick to bristle if the latter try to tread on our domain, the opposite can just as easily be true. Unfortunately, this is another example of a compartmentalized individual, and that is one thing the successful financier cannot be. However, to be a successful financier one does not need extensive training or experience in accounting or finance. In fact it can sometimes be a disadvantage to get too buried in working only from the standpoint of discounted cash-flow analyses, ROI's, etc. It must be stressed, however, that one had better know how these analyses are made, and be knowledgeable in understanding a balance sheet, and have a good understanding of financial terminology. The difference between a simple project-type debt financing with a commercial bank and a more inventive and creative financial package comes from an intuition and an experience relating to risk-reward factors. The most important element is "common-sense", based on knowledge and experience. The goal is structure a financial package that fits the project, and in so doing it is important to recognize that it must fit within the limitations of the group supplying the money. I find insensitivity to recognize these constraints the most common mistake made in the field. Put yourself in the other person's place and understand his sources of funds and financing limitations. The engineer has an advantage in financing, as he or she has (or should have) a better idea than anyone of the value of the product, be it the mine, prospect, or company i.e. the intangible or potential worth which cannot be put on a pro-forma. He also knows, or should know, the risks involved. Two projects might look the same on paper, but a good financier must have a sense of when to take whatever deal he can get, and when to hold out based on his evaluation of future developments. It is essential to have a good sense of commodity values and trends, trends affecting the general economy (money supply, interest rates, effects of energy costs, etc.), and political considerations. He must also have a good understanding of the science and art of taxation as deals can often be financed using the government as a silent and unwitting partner by proper use of the tax laws. WHEN TO SEEK FINANCE The first critical decision to make in financing a mineral prospect is "when". At the exploration level, when it is only a dream in the geologist's eye, the alternatives are more limited than when it is a fully-engineered project. The "when" decision depends on how much in internal funds the company has to play with, and how desirable it is to invite financial participation to spread the risk. LOG washers have been used for many years in the washing of clay iron ores, phosphate rock and manganese ores, but not until the past 15 years have they been employed to any extent in the preparation of aggregate materials and fluxing stone. For a machine of such importance where tenacious clay or soft rock must be eliminated, there are few data generally available. The purpose of this paper is to set forth the results obtained from several operations, together with a few suggestions for planning a specific installation. Where the material to be washed out consists of loose surface soil, silt, or small amounts of quickly soluble clay, there is little competition with other forms of washers, because greater power and maintenance are required for the operation of log washers, but where the foreign matter is a stiff clay, such as occurs with high-calcium limestones and in marginal gravel deposits, the ability of other kinds of washers to eliminate com-pletely the hard clay balls is at least uncertain. Then the log washer comes into its own field, for with the breaking and churning action of the logs it will clean out the toughest clay. Even with material from the hydraulic dredge, if it contains tough clay, the log washer is desirable unless the gravel is subjected to a costly soaking and rehandling process. Recently there has been a considerable development in other types of machines to accomplish these results but it is not within the scope of this paper to make comparisons between competitive types, but to present the best obtainable data on log washers only. From the primitive design that gave it its name, a long log hewn from a tree, with paddles forged to shape from strap iron and attached by lag screws, the log washer has gradually been developed to the present all-steel type. As now manufactured, the log washer consists essentially of two built-up logs on which are mounted a series of paddles, carried by shafts fitted at the ends of the logs on bearings fastened outside the enclosing steel box, or trough, which is set at an angle of about 5° to 10° and into which the material is fed. Tests carried out at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, Inc., on the effects of grain-refining deoxidizers are in substantial agreement with the data presented by Mr. Comstock. Notable is the observation that, although boron and aluminum increased hardenability, the steel was of poor quality in comparison with the other boron-treated steels to which at least two grain refiners were added. The effect of zirconium in improving the ductility of the chromium-nickel steel is in agreement with our experience that zirconium is specifically beneficial to chromium steels. In order to amplify Mr. Comstock's results and to indicate some of the basic principles of special deoxidation, the primary observations of our study have been summarized. The effect of boron in increasing hardenability was described by R. Walther, U. S. Patent No. 1519388, Dec. 16, 1924, but effective amounts in incompletely deoxidized steel are sufficient to harm hot workability and room-temperature ductility. Work at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, Inc., has shown that in order to obtain deep hardening without using such large amounts of boron as to result in impairment of ductility, the steel must be thoroughly deoxidized. This may be accomplished by a high silicon content or a grain-refining addition of strong deoxidizers. The degree of grain refinement and hardenability are inclined to be erratic when only one grain-refining element is used, although aluminum, zirconium, titanium, and vanadium have been used singly and resulted in increased. although somewhat erratic, hardenability. The ductility likewise was inclined to be inconsisterlt when only one grain-refining deoxidizer was added. By combinations of grain-refining elements, it was found possible to combine the specific virtues and counteract some of the defects of each clement. In addition, the complex deoxidizers gave more consistent grain refinement and hardenability. When used in combinations, each element adds its own specific influence as well as modifying the character of the other elements.
