The stresses in the simplest structures are often those we find most difficult to analyze. The most complex condition in mine stresses is found in simple tunnels where the roof, the sides, and the floor are a monolith. The functions of the parts are like the parts themselves not distinct and spccialized, and the problems to be solved are like those in a metal structure with riveted joints or a redundancy of bars. This difficulty explains perhaps why the condition has not been treated. But just because it cannot be discussed in its entirety is no reason why it should be treated as an action of parts with spccialized functions as a roof beam with supports and a foundation. The problern cannot be ignored on the ground that it is not of sufficient importance to warrant careful consideration, because conditions of complete monolithism, of which the tunnel is the type, are found materially unchanged in room-and-pillar and in longwall work. This unity between roof, sides, and floor, which to the coal miner is a difficult conception, really deserves a scientific appellation, and perhaps holoid (from holos, whole, and eidos, form) will serve the purpose as well as any other. In a simple tunnel the roof, the sides, and the floor form integral parts of one and the same structure, and the distortion of one cannot be conceived without a consequent strain in the others. Thus when the roof of the tunnel droops by reason of its weight, the upper parts of the sides are drawn in becausc they are integrally connected with the roof and must approach each other whenever, by the sagging of the roof, the distance between any two points in it is diminished. (See Fig. 1.) Thc sides in their turn operate on the floor of the holoid structure, producing a tensile stress. The writer has always been impressed with the value of soap as a means of illustrating the action of mine stresses. With that idea in mind' a cake of naphtha soap measuring 43/8 by 2¼ by 19i in. was taken and a tunnel was made through it 13/4 in. long, 21/2 in. wide and 1¼ in. high. (See Fig. 2.) SINCE Dr. St. Albans, in 1840, began to build successful watertube boilers—some of which are still in use—the gravity-return water-tube boiler has been built in many forms, more or less familiar to all who have studied the subject. A single firm in this country published recently a pamphlet, showing some fourteen modifications of their boiler during about as many years. There were hence available to the thoughtful inventor of this latest form many data showing what forms were to be avoided, as well as the effects sure to follow certain erroneous methods of construction in the older types. Two recent papers in this journal1,2 contain experimental evidence for an anomaly in the concentration gradient for tracer diffusion. In both papers, the authors suggest that this anomaly is due to a Gibbs' absorption effect. Their hypothesis is that surface active tracer elements tend to remain in or near the surface adsorption layer, thereby altering the diffusion flux and concentration gradient. It is not clear how the anomaly can be explained in terms of an adsorption effect. Surface tension forces act parallel rather than perpendicular to a surface and therefore should affect only the rate of spreading of surface active agents tangentially across a surface. Frenkel3 has given a short treatment of surface tension as a driving force for surface diffusion. While the equilibrium concentration of a surface active agent at the surface of a solution is known to be higher than in the bulk, its chemical potential is necessarily the same. It is difficult to see how adsorption can result in an anomaly in the chemical potential gradient, which is the driving force for diffusion. Corundum, little publicized as an industrial abrasive, has, in its small way, contributed greatly to the production of many specialized items vital to our war program and to Our allies. Optical elements Of the highest quality for range finders, bombsights, and scientific instruments; precision metal parts for torpedoes and airplane engines; quartz crystal plates for military radios; armorplate and malleable castings for tanks and guns; and eyeglasses for everyone; these are some Of the products that corundum has helped to produce in the quantities needed and on time. Unlike metals and many other raw materials, corundum is not incorporated into any Of these finished products. It is simply a grinding medium used to produce the desired finish or precision; an operating supply or tool, so to speak. With a Mobs' scale index of 9, corundum ranks next to the diamond in hardness among the natural minerals and is superior to emery and garnet. The gem varieties of corundum, including the Oriental ruby and sapphire, are frequently more highly prized as jewels than the diamond. It is the intent Of this paper to deal Only with a description of the corundum industry, the administration of wartime control, and certain economic aspects as seen by the author. Several references are listed to assist anyone who wishes further information on the geological occurrence of the mineral. Ore Production and Consumption For the past two decades, south Africa has been the world's sole producer of corundum ore. A possible exception is Russia, where, it is understood, there was considerable production during the thirties for domestic consumption but for which statistics are lacking. The United States is the world's principal consumer of corundum ore; imports lor the period 1934 through 1940 averaging 3000 Short tons per year, The years 1935 and 1936 were close to the 5000-ton mark, and imports during 1941, the last prewar year for which statistics have been released, were approximately 6000 Short tons. Again lacking statistics on Russia, the United Kingdom ranks second, but far below the United States in consumption of ore. Historically, corundum has been found in some 35 countries throughout the world, but the principal deposits are in South Africa, Canada, Madagascar, Russia and the united States. Deposits are generally small and subject to rapid exhaustion. Thus, the United States was the principal world producer for the period 1870 to 1900, when operations ceased except for two years during World War I. India was a producer of ore from 1898 through 1921, with peak output in 1916 through 1918 Canada came into production in 1901 with substantial output of ore and finished grain until 1914; the production thereafter was smaller until 1921. Madagascar has produced ore since 1910 but has had important output in only a few scattered years. South African production started in 1912

Since advances in the understanding of gravity thickening reflects the development of knowledge about suspensions themselves, the paper starts with the discussion of flocculent and nonflocculent suspensions. The properties of flocculent suspensions and their behavior in different concentration regions (zone settling, channelling, compression) are defined and discussed. In the main portion of the paper, the behavior of flocculent and nonflocculent suspensions during batch as well as continuous thickening, is presented, together with a brief review of the gravity thickening theories and sizing methods. The classical as well as the most recently developed methods are presented and their use and limitations are discussed.

The Henderson Mine started production in 1976 utilizing a unique, push-pull, mine ventilation plan. As the mine expands in size, the mine ventilation requirements will increase and a more comprehensive system for maintaining ventilation will be needed. A computer simulation study was completed and has resulted in a revised, systematic, mine ventilation plan which is being implemented as mine development proceeds. Based on the computer simulation study, the new ventilation plan takes into account mining of the orebody simultaneously from both the 8100 and 7700 production levels. Present experience and empirical data indicate that volumes of air needed to adequately ventilate both production levels cannot be obtained utilizing the existing mine layout. The total volume of air needed for the mine excluding haulage tunnel will increase from 708 m3/s (1 500 000 cfm) to 1652 m3/s (3 500 000 cfm), thus a new No. 5 exhaust shaft and connecting drifts are being developed to expand the mine ventilation system to service both production levels. The original ventilation plan for the 7500 haulage level was to bring air from the No. 2 and No. 3 intake shafts and exhaust it through the 94X raise to the 8035 exhaust level and then through the No. 1 exhaust shaft to surface. Control of air volumes in loading drifts was initially planned to be achieved by air doors and air curtains. Air doors on the 7500 level require large cutouts, expensive installations and constant maintenance. The computer simulation study indicates that air- flow in the 7500-level production drifts can be con- trolled exclusively by air curtains which are less expensive to install and more effective in regulating airflows than air doors. Air from the 7500 level can be exhausted through a new raise to the new 7635 exhaust level and then through the new No. 5 exhaust shaft.

. EVEN before the arrival of Cortes in 1519, the history of Mexico was closely linked to that of its mineral production; the mining activities of the Aztecs being thus described by Clavigero, one of the early historians: In the mountains of Anahuac there abound in veins all kinds of metals, and infinite variety of other fossiliferous products. The Aztecs obtained gold from the countries of the Cohuijques, of the Mixtecas, of the Zapotecas and from various other places. They gathered that precious metal usually in grain, from the sands of the rivers, keeping a certain portion for the crown. They obtained silver from the mines of Taxco, of Tzumpango and others; however, this metal was not as esteemed by them as by other neighboring nations. They had two kinds of copper; one hard, which they used instead of iron to make sickles; lances and all kinds of rural and military instru-ments and another, soft, with which they made kettles, goblets and other receptacles. This metal abounds mainly in the province of Zacatula and in that of Cohuijques, which at present is in the kingdom of Michoacan. They obtained tin from the mines of Taxco and lead from those of Izmiquilpan, located in the country of the Otomies. From the tin they made money, and the lead, we know they sold in the market places, but we ignore the uses to which they applied it. They also had mines of iron in Tlaxcala, in Taxco and in other places; but they either had not discovered them, or did not know how to make use of the metal they contained. In Chilapa there were mines of mercury, and in other places there were mines of sulphur, alum, vitriol, cinnabar, cohre and of a white earth which they esteemed highly. As regards mercury and vitriol, we do not know of what use (they were to them; the other metals they used in paintings and dyes. There were then great abundance of amber and asphalt-bitu-men of Judea-on the coast of the seas and many cities of that territory paid tribute of one and the other to the kingdom of Mexico. They mounted the amber in gold, and it was only used as ornament and display by them. With the asphalt they made certain perfumes.

METALLURGISTS - or at least metals - have been of central importance in most of the inventions that have shaped the course of man's history. From the first Bronze Age tools to the iron armor of the Roman soldier, the cannon, cast type for printing, the steam engine, the electric motor and modern electronic devices, technological progress has revolved around some particular property or comb nation of properties selected from the metallurgist's repertory. The recent utilization of the energy of the atomic nucleus (currently for military purposes alone but with great constructive implications for the future) is no exception to this, although the use of uranium and plutonium in metallic form is of secondary importance, since the significant properties are those of the nucleus and not of the electrons responsible for metallic behavior. THE METALLURGIST AND ATOMIC ENERGY The metallurgist has a role of central importance to play in the future development of atomic energy. Not only must he make and shape the fissionable materials themselves, but he must also develop auxiliary materials to withstand the extreme conditions imposed on nuclear reactor components by the high heat-transfer rates needed for efficient utilization of the fuel and by the perplexing but interesting effects of radiation on the structure and properties of materials. It is doubtful if there is currently any other field potentially more rewarding to a young metallurgist. Lead smelting in the ore hearth, first practiced in Europe, whence the traditional name "Scotch hearth, and later developed in America to its present efficiency, is based upon the roast reduction process and is applicable to relatively high-grade galena concentrates. The roast reduction process embraces not only the roast reactions: 2PbS + 70 = PbO + PbSO4, + SO2 PbS + 2PbO = 3Pb + SO2 PbS + 2PbSO4 = Pb + 2PbO + 3SO2 but also, by reason of the addition of extraneous fuel, the reduction reaction: 2PbO + C = 2Pb + CO2 Thus in the ore hearth the roasting of lead sulphide, forming lead oxide and lead sulphate, the reaction of lead oxide and lead sulphate with lead sulphide producing lead, and the reduction of lead oxide by carbon producing lead, go on simultaneously. The Ore Hearth Function of the Ore Hearth.—The ore hearth, through the roast reduction process, provides for the extraction of lead and the immediate disposal of the smelting products—fume, hearth slag and lead, all of which are subsequently treated as follows: the fume is recovered in the flue system and baghouses, mixed with concentrates, and returned to the ore hearth in the form of ore mix; the hearth slag is smelted in a blast furnacc for the further recovery of lead; and the lead is refined and cast into a marketable product. Concentrates Amenable to Ore-hearth Smelting.—Only concentrates that are high in lead content, 70 per cent or more, are ordinarily considered amenable to ore-hearth smelting. Silica should not exceed 2 per cent and iron is allowable only to 4 per cent. These slag-forming constituents occlude both sulphide and mctallic lead, prevent the elimination of sulphur and decrease the lead extraction. Lime and magnesia are beneficial in that both favor a dry slag, promote elimination of sulphur, and prevent occlusions of metallic lead.

A distillate-bearing sand complex is often made up of sand stringers of different permeabilities. In order to take into account the influence of the different permeabilities, "parallel flow" is defined, and this concept is used to compute the recovery efficiency of recycling such a sand complex. In the first approximation the position of the wells with respect to one another is not considered. In order to compute the effect on the recovery efficiency of the position of the wells, the area of a field is considered to be made up of rectangles; each rectangle containing one input well in the center and two producers located symmetrically with respect to the input well. Formulas are given from which to obtain the pressure and streamlines in a steady-state flow. A method is devised to compute rapidly the successive positions of the dry gas front. If the field is irregular in shape, pressure and streamlines can be obtained by a potentio-metric electrical model study. By using the concept of "parallel flow" and the results obtained by mathematical analysis or by electrical model study for a homogeneous formation, the effects of different permeabilities and of the location of the wells can be established. From these studies it is apparent that the efficiency of recycling can be profoundly influenced by differences in permeability among the various parallel strata. Introduction With the discovery of an increasing number of gas-distillate fields in the Gulf Coast, engineers have had occasion to give more thought to the performance of these reservoirs, as evidenced by the literature published in recent years. In the majority of studies published so far the formations are considered to consist of uniform, homogeneous sand. In this paper the authors wish to bring out the effect of variations in the permeability of the formations on the over-all recovery efficiency of wet gas in cycling operations. The importance of the permeability profile is clearly indicated by the fact that in gas cycling, highly permeable stringers in an otherwise tight sand can allow complete displacement of wet by dry gas in these stringers long before the wet gas in the tight portions of the sand is displaced. This by-passing will be reflected by a reduction in the condensate content of the production sooner than can be anticipated from a mathematical analysis or an electrical model study on uniform sands. Electrical model studies or mathematical analyses cannot take into consideration the manifold variations of permeability within the reservoir. Experimental as well as analytical difficulties make it necessary to consider the prototype for either of these studies as a perfectly uniform sand. Mathematical analyses are applicable only when a reservoir can be divided into units of simple geometrical form, of uniform thickness throughout. Electric model studies are capable of giving information on reservoirs of any shape or thickness, but it is essential that the sand be considered homogeneous, so that three-dimensional flow can take place. LEAD is an inexpensive metal produced and consumed in large quantities with certain chemical and physical properties that permit handling the molten metal in bulk. These properties are its low melting point, resistance to oxidation, and its negligible solvent action on iron and steel. Thus, lead is almost always melted in large iron or steel kettles, heated from beneath, and is seldom melted in either directly or indirectly fired furnaces or electric induction or arc furnaces. Even with a modest operation a kettle holding 2 or 3 tons is employed, and the size will range up to 215 tons in the large lead refineries. The methods of handling tin and its alloys are essentially the same as for lead because of the similarity in melting point and resistance to oxidation, although because of the cost of the metal the scale is more modest. In melting lead and its alloys preliminary to a casting operation it is seldom that the melting unit is completely drained of its contents. The usual procedure is to continuously charge solid metal and continuously remove small amounts of liquid metal, so that the kettle is maintained essentially full at all times. For type metals, linotype machines usually employ automatic means of adding the solid alloy to the melting pot in proportion to the removal of the liquid metal in casting slugs of type. In the casting of grids for storage batteries, frequently automatic means of charging solid metal in direct proportion to the consumption of liquid metal in the casting is used. In the manufacture of bearing alloys, new alloy is charged in direct proportion to the consumption of metal in the bearings being cast, so that at no time does the level of the metal in the melting pot lower to any great extent. Even in the manufacture of bulky commodities such as pipe, cable. sheathing, and slabs for rolled sheet, it is the practice to employ a melting kettle of several times the capacity of the casting being made. A substantial level of liquid metal in the melting kettle is thus maintained even after the casting is poured and the original metal level is quickly restored by promptly charging new metal, even though there is no immediate need to proceed with additional casting. This procedure is permissible because the amount of fuel consumed in keeping the lead molten and immediately available for use is negligibly small and the cost is more than offset by the convenience. However, this convenient procedure necessitates study and control of certain properties of lead and tin alloys that are not of serious consequence in most other alloys and for that reason are not well known. These properties are "drossing rates" and "melting segregation." DROSSING RATE Users of lead long ago observed that the rate of dross formation on the surface of the lead in their kettles or pots varied greatly from time to time. This was particularly common in places where both antimonial lead alloys and commercially pure lead were being handled.

Lead-refining practice at the Bunker Hill differs to some extent from that of other United States refineries using the Parkes process, in that the Bunker Hill has reverted to a custom used years ago of making two kinds of skims, or crusts, in the desilverizing kettles. Also, this was the first refinery to adopt the liquation process for silver skims as developed in Australia. Both of these ideas were brought to the attention of the operator by H. S. J. Sommerset, in the summer of 1924, while he was visiting metallurgical plants in the United States, when he was general superintendent of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty., Ltd., of Port Pirie, South Australia. Since Mr. Sommerset's visit, United States patents on the liquation process have been issued to George Kenneth Williams, of Port Pirie, South Australia. At the Bunker Hill, the lead bullion is conveyed from the blast furnaces to the refinery in brick-lined cast-steel pots, each having a capacity of 5 tons, by a 20-ton electric crane, to which is suspended a Fairbanks-Morse suspension-type scale on which the gross, tare and net weights are obtained. The bullion is poured from the small bullion pots into either one of two kettles of 105 tons capacity, and when a kettle is entirely filled the heavy dross is removed by skimming it into a 5-ton pot suspended by the crane. The crane operator becomes proficient in the manipulation and a kettle is skimmed in a very short time. After the kettle is skimmed clean the bullion is pumped to a kettle of the same size alongside, where the bullion is cooled until it has almost frozen. By using two kettles for the drossing operation, one to accumulate the bullion where the heavy dross is removed, and then pumping to a clean kettle comparatively free of hangings, etc., it is possible to reduce the copper content much lower than if only one kettle is used in the operation. The secondary metals industry might well be defined as the group of remelters, smelters, refiners, and manufacturers that convert scrap metals or residues to commercial forms. In this industry, scrap metals and residues are processed to pro- duce refined metals, ingot alloys, fabricated shapes, and chemical products. Secondary metal is defined as metal recovered from commercial scrap, that is, scrap that has entered the processor's plant in scrap form. Metal recovered by a manufacturer from "home scrap" generated in his own plant is not considered to be secondary, because it represents part of the original stock that simply requires additional treatment before emerging as a finished product. In any economic study, a basic point of measurement must be chosen, and in the case of secondary metals, the melting pot or its counterpart represents the stage in which metal is converted from scrap to some more usable form. Beyond this point there is often no means to distinguish between secondary metal recovered from scrap and virgin metal produced directly from ore. In the last fifteen or twenty years the secondary metals industry has grown to major importance. Some consumers distrust secondary metals, but frequently this distrust serves only to prove an inability to keep up with the times. A method has been developed For predicting the critical temperatures and critical pressures of binary mixtures of carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon monoxide and oxygen with the normal paraffin hydrocarbons. For carbon-dioxide and hydrogen-sulfide systems, relations are presented that take into account the peculiar behavior of mixtures with closely boiling components, such as carbon dioxide-ethane and hydrogen sulfide-propane mixtures which exhibit minimum critical temperature points. For hydrogen, nitrogen and carbon-monoxide systems, the extreme critical behavior caused by wide differences in pure component properties is established In addition, those fixed gas-paraffin systems which resemble paraffin-paraffin systems are also accounted for. For a mixture of known composition, the pure component critical temperatures, critical pressures and normal boiling points are all that are required to determine its critical point. Graphical relations are presented relating Tc and PC , of the mixture to the pure component properties. From the treatment of 12 carbon-dioxide and hydrogen-sulfide systems reported in the literature (74 mixtures), the expected error lor the critical temperature is approximately 1.5 per cent, and for the critical pressure, approximately 2 per cent. From the treatment of six hydrogen, nitrogen and carbon-monoxide systems reported in the literature (30 mixtures), the expected error for both the critical temperature and critical pressure is approximately 2.5 per cent. The relationships, which have been developed with only normal paraffins as the hydrocarbon components, may be extended to those isoparaffins and olefins which fall within the allowable volatility ranges. INTRODUCTION Many of the fixed gases — carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon monoxide and oxygen — occur in natural mixtures with hydrocarbons. Carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide are frequent components of the fluids produced from underground petroleum reservoirs. Nitrogen, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide are present in varying quantities in most natural gases and gas-condensate well effluents. Hydrogen mixtures are of considerable interest in many phases of refining processes of petroleum. The determination of the critical temperatures and critical pressures of such mixtures is of value in vapor-liquid equilibrium studies, for the prediction of the characteristics of underground reservoirs, and for reduced-state correlations of PVT, transport and thermodynamic properties. The accurate estimation of the critical point for binary mixtures is an important initial step toward a complete analysis for the establishment of the critical temperatures and pressures of multi-component mixtures. Methods for predicting the critical temperatures and critical pressures of binary hydrocarbon systems have already been presented in the literature.8 It is possible to apply these existing methods to fixed gas-paraffin mixtures, but due to their unusual critical behavior, values calculated deviate considerably from experimental values. For systems containing trace quantities of the fixed gases, these methods are acceptable; however, for systems containing more than 5 mol per cent of the fixed gases, these utterly fail to produce reasonable critical values. Consequently, in this study a method has been developed for handling such binary mixtures over the entire composition range. CARBON-DIOXIDE AND HYDROGEN-SULFIDE SYSTEMS The critical behavior and the vapor pressure behavior of mixtures of carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide with paraffinic hydrocarbons may be quite similar or quite dissimilar to that of paraffin-paraffin mixtures, depending on the volatilities of the components involved. The critical temperature and normal boiling point of carbon dioxide are very close to the corresponding values for ethane, while its critical pressure is considerably higher than that of ethane. The microwave region of the radio spectrum was effectively utilized in radar designs during the recent war and it has become of increasing interest in the field of communications. Work in this field has led to an important use for silicon—that of the point contact rectifiers†1 in the frequency converter of microwave (radar or radio) receivers—and has stimulated considerable interest in the electrical properties and preparation of silicon and its alloys. Silicon is an electronic semiconductor. Its conductivity at room temperature results principally from the presence of certain impurities. While for metals an increase in impurity content increases the resistivity, for semiconductors such as silicon the opposite occurs and, in general, the addition of impurities lowers the resistivity. Silicon materials may be classified into one of two groups depending upon the manner in which the impurities contribute to electrical properties. These have been termed for convenience p-type or n-type. P-type silicon develops a very large positive thermal emf against metals, has a Hall coefficient of positive sign and a low resistance direction in point contact rectification with the silicon positive with respect to the point. N-type silicon, on the other hand, develops a negative thermal emf against metals, has a Hall coefficient of negative sign and a low resistance direction in rectification with the silicon negative with respect to the point. Impurities which produce n-type silicon are called donors inasmuch as these elements contribute to electrical conductivity by donating electrons to an unfilled energy band in the silicon. On the other hand, elements which produce p-type silicon are known as acceptors as these impurities contribute to the electrical conductivity by accepting electrons from a filled energy band permitting what is known as conductivity by "holes" in which the sign of the carriers appears to be positive. A general treatment of the mechanism of conduction in semiconductors from the viewpoint of modern band theory has been given recently by Pearson,2 by Becker, Green and Pearson,3 and by Torrey and Whitmer.4 In this investigation boron and aluminum have been found to be acceptors, and phosphorus, arsenic, and antimony to be donors in silicon. Data on the effect of boron and phosphorus on the electrical properties, when present singly and in combination, have been acquired. These data are discussed in the present paper. Raw Materials Used and Methods for Adding Seeond Constituents Silicon from two sources was used in this work and these will be referred to as A and B respectively. Silicon A is a material of high purity supplied by the Electro Metallurgical Co. It is prepared by chemical purification of "commercial" silicon obtained from the arc furnace reduction of SiO2. It contains 99.8 pct silicon, minimum, with small amounts of calcium, iron, aluminum, boron, and phosphorus as the principal impurities. This material was extensively employed in these studies as well as in the commercial preparation of rectifier materials. Silicon B is a material of high purity from the du-Pont Co. It is prepared by a pyrolytic reduction of Sicl4 and is free of analytically detectable amounts of boron and phosphorus. Its use permitted study of the effect of boron and phosphorus individually on the properties. This material contains, however, spec-troscopic traees of a number of metals, some of which affect electrical and rectification properties. Typical analyses for the two grades of silicon are given in Table 1. To make controlled additions of boron to the charge it was necessary to employ a low boron content master alloy since the quantity of boron to be added was usually only a few thousandths of one percent. The alloy containing nominally one percent boron was prepared by melting chemically pure boron with silicon A using the melting techniques for 320 g silicon

THE Butte, Anaconda & Pacific electrification is of peculiar interest, in an incidental way, to the entire mining fraternity, and especially the engineering branch, not only in this great Northwest country but throughout the entire Western mining country, which is rich in minerals and water power. It is probably fair to say that the prime object of mining and smelting engineering is to reduce the cost of production, and in the case in hand the relative location of mines and smelter brings the cost of transportation of ore to the front. While some might assign this item to the railway people, it is inseparably a part and parcel of the general scheme of the production of metal from the ore. In considering the electrification of the B., A. &. P. railway the mining and smelting engineer, above all, wants to know what saving will be effected by the change in motive power. Unfortunately the new power has been in use during a very limited period and on the Smelter Hill section of the road only, and no reliable data, from actual service conditions, can be obtained until the entire electrified section has been in service for a reasonable length of time. Any remarks on this subject at the present time, therefore, must of necessity be general in nature and more or less descriptive. The railway, electrical and mining worlds and the country in general are indebted to the B., A. & P. railway for the pioneer work it is now doing, as it undoubtedly marks the beginning of the electrification, within the comparatively near future, of all transcontinental roads between the Missouri river and the Pacific coast. Together with this goes the development of an untold wealth in water power and all natural resources within the same territory. For the first time in the history of electric railway work, in this country, direct current at a potential of 2,400 volts is being used. With this potential there is a great saving in transmission of energy to the locomotives and there are only two substations, one at. either end and 26 miles apart, for supplying the power for the movement of trains of heavy tonnage over the main line and for switching movements at terminal and intermediate yards, and comparatively little feeder copper is required.

The removal of heavy metal compounds from a synthesized waste cyanide solution is achievable by a precipitation-flotation method. However, the differential separation of constituting metals by this method was thought to be very difficult. The present author found that addition of ferrous salt to the synthesized waste cyanide solution of cadmium and copper can modify the separation characteristics of these metals. In this paper, the separation of cadmium from copper in the synthesized waste cyanide water by the precipitation-flotation method is discussed. This differential flotation uses ferrous salt as a precipitant and sodium oleate as a collector. Based on a series of fundamental flotation tests, actual differential flotation tests were made. The separation of cadmium from copper in the synthesized waste cyanide water was found to be satisfactory. This method can be effective for the removal of difficult-to- separate colloidal precipitates from liquids by the sedimentation method, provided the applicability of this method to the separation of the other metals is promising. This consists of the intensive studies which have been conducted at author's laboratory.
