R. W. Raymond, New York City: In his paper at the New York meeting (Trans., xix., 28), Mr. Ledyard described, among other mines, the Belmont, in the county of Peterboro, Ontario, the developments of which at that time indicated, though they did not, perhaps, completely demonstrate, a deposit of high-grade Bessemer magnetite of very great extent. Mr. Ledpard said that experts estimated the quantity of ore within 100 feet of the surface at 1,000,000 tons. But the precise data upon which this estimate was based were not furnished. We are all interested in the development of fresh supplies of Bessemer ores. I think nobody who knows how enormous is the demand can seriously fear that such deposits will be exploited too rapidly. On the other hand, I need not here enlarge on the fact that a considerable number of enterprises, in which American ironmasters have been more or less interested, for the development of Canadian iron-ore deposits, have been unsuccessful, more by reason of disappointment as to the quantity of the ore and the facilities for cheaply mining it on a large scale, than as to its quality. Of course, a Canadian nine supplying the American market is handicapped at present, to the extent of 75 cents per ton, by the duty on foreign iron-ore; but this would certainly not be prohibitory in the case of a deposit sufficiently large, rich, and accessible. Conventional roof bolting may be giving ground to a new technique that utilizes only the ground itself to stabilize mine openings. This newly developed stress control technique (SCT) has initially been used in sedimentary ore bodies that are both overlain and underlain by weak strata. The technique is also suited to the design of production panels and main entry systems, and is readily adaptable to room and pillar as well as total- extraction mining, including both shortwall and longwall coal mining. In applications where the technique has been used, the requirements for roof bolting and floor renewal were virtually eliminated. The SCT comprises three basic methods and covers a wide range of problems associated with failing roofs and heaving floors in underground mines (see Table 1).

The influence of various elements in retarding or accelerating the absorption of carbon during the process of carburization is fairly well known. In general those elements which form carbides accelerate the absorption, while those which do not retard it. It has sometimes been wrongly stated that those elements which raise the temperature of the critical range increase the absorption, while those which lower this temperature decrease it. Silicon is a notable exception to this rule, for its influence is to raise the critical range but to lower the absorption of carbon. Some elements which do not form carbides have no apparent influence upon the absorption rate. Carbon itself retards the absorption rate. With a view to obtaining more exact data upon the subject the following experiments were undertaken: 208 steels of different chemical composition were selected to represent most of the types of modern constructional steels. Specimens 2 in. in diameter and 9 in. in length were weighed to milligrams. They were then packed in the special carburizing box shown in Fig. 1, and kept in the furnace for 10 hours at a temperature of 900' C. A duplicate experiment was conducted at 1,000° C. At equal intervals of time the box was rotated in the furnace so that two complete revolutions were made in the 10 hours. This precaution was taken to neutralize as much as possible any effect of unequal heating. At the end of the 10 hours the box was allowed to cool in the furnace with the doors open. The specimens were then weighed again and the increased weight (carbon) determined. In the following table are given the analyses of the various steels, together with the increased weight of carbon expressed in milligrams.

IN the history of geophysical exploration by the electromagnetic method many procedures and types of equipment have been used. Source arrangements for surveying on the ground have included long wires grounded at both ends, large loops laid on the ground, small horizontal loops, and vertical loops of moderate to small sizes. Receivers have ranged from simple direction-finding coils to combinations of coils and a bridge circuit to measure quantities related to both amplitude and phase of the received signal. Primary considerations in choosing a survey method are effectiveness, speed, and economy. In work on the ground in which locating and out- lining conducting bodies is the objective, methods using a vertical coil and a simple direction-finder have been found the most satisfactory. Mason1 and his associates applied such a method by setting up a vertical source loop, fed with low frequency alternating current by an engine-generator set. With a direction-finding receiver they surveyed lines along the ground in the plane of the loop, taking measurements at each station of the azimuth and inclination of the magnetic field direction. Deviations of this direction from the normal direction, that is, from horizontal and perpendicular to the traverse line, indicated a conducting body. Recent advances in design of light-weight generating equipment have encouraged using this and similar methods.

INTRODUCTION Object RATHER large amounts of titanium minerals and some zircon and monazite are being recovered from dune sands about 10 miles west of Jacksonville Beach, Fla. The Mining Branch of the Bureau of Mines, Southern Experiment Station, has been interested in developing additional large deposits of similar sands in other areas of Florida. The results of a field study have been published1 concerning the sands occurring on Trail Ridge which runs north and south about 30 miles southwest of Jacksonville. This investigation was undertaken in order to identify the opaque titanium minerals occurring in Trail Ridge and because of the economic importance of Florida titanium minerals. Nature of the Problem The minerals present in the heavy fractions (sp gr > 2.94) of the sands are principally opaque minerals; staurolite, zircon, sillimanite, tourmaline, kyanite, rutile, a small amount of corundum, traces of the zinc spinel gahnite and garnet. Epidote, monazite, hornblende and titanite are present in other dune sands but these minerals were not noted in the samples collected on Trail Ridge. All of the minerals except those which are opaque can be readily identified by the usual petrographic methods. However, opaque minerals cannot be examined satisfactorily by transmitted light. Polished sections of the opaque-mineral grains were examined but these sections did not furnish useful information. Consequently, it was necessary to use means other than the usual petrographic methods to identify them. Previous Investigations of Heavy Minerals in Florida Sands Martens2 has described the heavy minerals in the Florida beach sands and has classified the opaque minerals as ilmenite with minor amounts of leucoxene. Miller3 studied a number of sands collected by Ross and Mertie in Florida. He states that the material from the Florida beach and dune sands that commonly has been called ilmenite has essentially the chemical composition of the material that has been called arizonite.4 The X ray diffraction patterns of several samples indicated that the supposed ilmenite is essentially amorphous, with only weak lines corresponding to ilmenite, and hence the material is unlike the type of arizonite from Arizona. Opaque Titanium Minerals Rutile is essentially titanium dioxide. However, as pointed out by Dana,5 important amounts of Fee and Fe3 as well as Cb and Ta are reported in some analyses.

THIS survey is one of the more recent tests of geophysical methods of prospecting by the Dominion Observatory and the Geological Survey of Canada, of which the purpose is to find out what application such methods may have to geological problems in Canada. The Malagash salt deposit lies on the north shore of Nova Scotia about 40 miles east of the New Brunswick boundary, and forms a part of faulted and folded Carboniferous strata. The salt beds are exposed only in the mine workings, which are about 1000 ft. deep and at one place extend for 1000 ft. along the strike. Lack of rock exposures, complicated folds, and faults make it impossible to predict the location of salt away from the mine. A survey of an area in the vicinity of the mine was therefore undertaken to find out whether the salt could be located by the torsion balance and whether its extension from the mine workings could be traced. As the gravitational effects at Malagash may be fairly typical of those at other concealed salt deposits in the Carboniferous rocks of the Maritime Provinces of Canada, the survey has a direct bearing on prospecting for other deposits. The survey was made in 1934 by A. H. Miller in collaboration with Dr. W. A. Bell, of the Geological Survey of Canada. Observations began on June 15 and were completed four months later, on Oct. 15. Definite gravitational effects including a lowering of gravity were observed over the deposit. The survey also disclosed one other area of low gravity east of the mine but whether this area is underlain by a large body of salt is not yet established.

THE study of anisotropy in metals has been greatly stimulated in recent years by the rapid development of X-ray methods for determining the crystallographic relationships of wrought and annealed materials. Prior to this time the knowledge regarding the directional properties of commercial alloys consisted almost exclusively of observations of a practical nature made during the fabrication of metal objects, supplemented by a limited number of mechanical tests on specimens cut at various angles to the direction of working. Such observations clearly indicate that the common methods of cold-working metals cause both a crystallographic and a mechanical fibering varying in character and degree according to the nature and extent of the deforming process. Even after annealing, following certain not too well known combinations of reductions and anneals, a preferred orientation may exist, thereby constituting a residual fiber effect sufficiently pronounced to manifest directional properties. With the application of the X-ray the experimental horizon was extended chiefly because the study of anisotropic metals promised to offer direct and quantitative evidence regarding the involved mechanism of fragmentation and plastic flow. As a natural consequence the intensive studies in this direction have yielded a vast accumulation of data of ultimate potential value. Unfortunately, however, as is commonly the case in entering a virgin field of experimentation, many of the data cannot be molded into complete and coherent form because of the many unrelated conditions of the experimental projects. Again, the results of the study of single crystals have been rather naturally but at times indiscriminately applied to polycrystalline metals. Furthermore, sweeping statements have been made regarding the behavior during working and annealing of metals and alloys, entirely on the basis of similarity in lattice arrangement. There is abundant reason for believing that relatively small concentration variables, differences, in magnitude and distribution of applied stresses, and the character of associated annealing treatments may in some cases greatly influence the mechanics of flow and consequently largely determine the final structural characteristics of the metal.

W. J. Kroll (Belgium)—Those who are acquainted with the metallurgy of our forefathers may have occasionally a good time when glancing at recent publications in which aged discoveries are unconsciously reported as novelties. We know very well, that oxygen blowing of iron has been described by old Bessemer. The author of the present article is, however, not aware of the fact that the process he describes, the fused salts scrubbing, was already used in the middle of the last century by St. Claire Deville in his attempts at making higher-purity aluminum from raw AlCl3 by sodium reduction. The same fact escaped the three investigators to whom the author refers. The technical grade AlC13 produced by St. Claire Deville from impure oxide, chlorine, and carbon (Oersted process) was contaminated with Sic4 and FeC13, which he removed on an industrial scale by various methods.' He sublimed, for instance, his chloride in contact with iron nails, or aluminum chips, or in hydrogen, which reduced the FeC13 to the less volatile FeCl2. He used also alkali-alkaline earth chlorides as a solvent for A1C13 and FeC13 in presence of iron as a reducing agent, and sublimed his purified AlC13 from solvent salts. The successors of Deville used also zinc or lead as a reducing agent. These methods were later used currently for the purification of BeCl2 and for collecting this compound in a salt bath, suitable for fusion electrolysis. More recently, the same Deville process has been described as applied to the purification of ZrCL4, as part of a method of extraction of ZrCL4 from silico zirconium, which later was reacted with FeC12 in a separate part of the equipment. According to the patent referred to3 the ZrCL4 is dissolved as a gas in a carrier salt such as alkali-alkaline earth chloride, from which it can be reclaimed in a purified form by distillation. A bath of NaCl/KCl is recommended in the specifications. The FeC12-FeC13 go in the salt solution in which raw ZrCl4 is introduced by bubbling, while Sic4 and Tic4 pass through the bath and escape in the atmosphere. purification by this salt-solvent method is thus well described. It may be worth while insisting on some minor details about which the author did not bother too much. One of these concerns the material of construction for the container. If iron is used, and if no other reducing agent is added, then it is the iron of the pot that acts as a reagent in the breakdown of FeC13 to FeCl2, and corrosion can be expected. This shows the importance of using extraneous large surface-reducing agents, of which there is a choice. Zir-

Would you briefly describe how you chose the minerals industry and reflect upon some of your earliest experiences? I wish that I could say that I had a well-formulated career plan early in life and that mining engineering was always foremost in it, but I cannot, In fact, I was quite indecisive before I finally chose my life's vocation. But in another respect, I am glad my career unfolded in the manner it did because it gave me a better insight into advising others on career opportunities. Probably the greatest problem confronting our youth, and the one I find preys upon their minds the most, is their inability to select a career path early in life. This indecision frequently has a deep psychological effect upon them and they become down on themselves. Therefore, it fortifies them somewhat to learn that others who have become successful in their careers had difficulties choosing a career path early in life. However, while assuring young people that an early choice is not absolutely essential for success, I caution them to work toward as early a decision as possible.

The nature and the limits of validity of Darcy's law US applied to the flow of natural gas through reservoirs has been considered in order to resolve some controversial aspects of the effect of turbulence on pressure drops. The equivalence between various concepts and viewpoints advanced in the past by several investigators to explain how and why a gas well does not necessarily perform according to Darcy's law is shown. Starting with generalized equations of flow of fluids through porous media, a partial differential equation has been derived which accurately represents the flow at all rates. This equation has been numerically solved using an IBM 704 digital computer. The results permit plots of unsteady radial pressure distribution curves from which specific isochronal backpressure curves may be constructed. These back-pressure curves show the effect of the ,8 factor on the slope of the back-pressure curve. The calculations further indicate that the drainage radius for a gas well in turbulent flow propagates at a rate dependent upon the rate of production at the wellbore. This is quite different from the case with liquid flow or natural-gas flow in laminar regime. Additionally, the effect of reservoir inhomogeneities and crossflow between layers of different permeability on the back-pressure performance of gas wells has been conridered. In light of the current numerical results the significance and linlitation of the rate of flow function Y proposed by Smith" has been discussed. INTRODUCTION The relationship between the pressure drop and flow rate in problems of fluid flow through porous media is known to be affected by the nature of flow through the porous matrix. It has been observed by many that, for a range of flow rates, the pressure drop remains proportional to the rate of flow. When some flow rate is reached, however, it is usually observed that the pressure drop gradually begins to increase more than proportionally to the flow rate. It is well known that this phenomenon was first observed by Osborne Reynolds in 1901 in experimenting with flow through pipes. In his classical experiments, Reynolds made visual observations on the condition of streamlines evidenced by injecting a dye into water flowing through glass tubes. In these experiments, the abrupt transition between steady, "streamline, laminar" flow and unsteady random turbulent flow was found to be a function of the dimensionless group (Dvp/u), now known as the Reynolds number. During these experiments, in addition to observations on the nature of flow regimes, the proportionality between flow rate and pressure drop in laminar flow was contrasted with the nonlinearity between these variables in turbulent flow. Fancher and Lewis' reported data on various consolidated and unconsolidated sands in 1933. Their conclusions were that ". . . the flow of fluids through these porous materials closely resembles that through pipes; that there is a condition of flow in porous systems which resembles viscous flow, another which corresponds to turbulent; that the change from one type to the other takes place at a definite and reproducible condition for each system". In 1947, Brownell and Katz published a method to predict the laminar and turbulent flow behavior from the particle size, bed porosity and the particle sphericity, employing the friction factor-Reynolds number charts for pipes. Several investigators have verified the work of Fancher, Lewis and Barnes and presented their data as friction factor-vs-Reynolds number plots.' The equation which would represent the pressure gradient over the whole range of velocity must have an added term over that represented by Darcy's law. Accordingly, the pressure gradient necessary to sustain flow at the velocity (v) through a porous medium may be represented by the following equation, suggested by Forscheimer." The nature and the range of validity of Darcy's law has been the subject of studies by many investigators over the past years. While everyone seemed to agree on the need for a quadratic correction term to Darcy's law to make it effective over the range of velocities, the concept of inception of turbulence and the use of the term "turbulent flow" remained controversial. The two most widely used methods of measuring hardness are the Brinell and the scleroscope. In the Brinell method a hardened steel ball is pressed into the steel under a definite load and the area of the resulting depression is measured. The load in kg. per sq. mm. of the area of the depression is taken as a measure of the hardness. Within certain limits the hardness number so determined is independent of the load or the size of the ball. In the scleroscope method a small weight carrying a diamond point is dropped through a glass tube upon the steel and the amount of rebound is taken as proportional to the hard-' ness. In both methods the scale of hardness is an arbitrary one; however, they agree in a comparative may, that is, a steel showing 50 per cent. increase in hardness by the Brinell test mill show approximately 50 per cent. increase in hardness by the scleroscope test. Yet upon consideration of the two methods it appears that, upon a steel which has been carbonized, this should not be the case ; for the scleroscope method gives almost exclusively the surface-hardness, and the condition of the material below the surface has but a slight bearing upon the hardness number. The results given by the Brinell method should, however, be the exact opposite; for the depth of penetration 'of a ball pressed into the steel would be dependent to a large extent upon the condition of the material below the surface. This is particularly obvious when it is considered that the size of the ball ordinarily used in the Brinell method is 1 cm. (about 8 in.) in diameter under a load of 3,000 kg., while the diamond point of the scleroscope is in the neighborhood of 0.01 in. across, fitted in a hammer of about 0.5 oz. weight and dropping from a height of 10 inches.

The discovery of a thin pay streak, yielding carbonates of copper; native silver, and perhaps chloride of silver, was made on the 9th of April, 1874, within the trachytic belt which forms part of the Sierra Mojada. The discoverer named it the Humboldt Mine. On the 2d of May, 1874, another discovery was made, in a northwest direction from the Humboldt, at about five hundred feet distant, this was named the Pocahontas Mine. After some exploration these two discoveries were proven to be on the same vein. To the southeast of the Humboldt a claim had already been taken up, called the Virginia; and to the northwest of the Pocahontas, one called the Southeast Leviathan. On these' last two this same vein has been found and worked. This paper will therefore treat of the Humboldt-Pocahontas vein, as worked on these four claims, to wit: beginning at the northwest, the Southeast Leviathan, the Pocahontas, the Humboldt, and the Virginia claims. SYSTEMATIC investigations of the Fe-Ga system have been reported only very recently."' The maximum solid solubility of gallium in a-Fe is nearly 50 at. pet at 900°C. However, from Ref. 1, it was not evident that the a-Fe solid solution could be retained successfully beyond 17.38 at. pet Ga by solid-state quenching. The present investigation reports the retention of a-Fe solid solution at 50 at. pet Ga by quenching from the liquid. An ordered phase of CsC1-type B2) structure was observed between 34 - 50 at. pet Ga. Since it was considered very probable that the CsCl structure would occur at high temperatures, alloy filings were also quenched by the conventional quenching technique. In addition to the CsCl phase, a second ordered phase of BiF3-type (DO3) structure was found in the range 25 - 30 at. pet Ga. Alloys were prepared from elements of 99.99 pet purity or better, induction-melted in alumina crucibles under hydrogen. After reweighing, the alloy ingots were cast into wires under argon. From the weight losses and the reproducibility of the lattice parameters, compositions were estimated to be within ± 0.3 at. pet. The techniques of quenching from the liquid state were reported before.3-5 Prior to quenching, a small section of cast alloy wire (30 - 50 mg) was melted in an alumina insert under an argon flow. The quenched specimens were in the form of flakes, typically 1 sq mm in area. For solid-state quenching, alloy filings passing 200 mesh were sealed under a reduced helium atmosphere in a thin-bottom silica tube. After heating for -30 min at the desired temperature in a vertical furnace, the sealed tube was rapidly dropped into ice water so that the thin bottom of the tube broke on impact. The quenched alloy filings were always ferromagnetic and could be collected by a magnet. X-ray diffraction patterns were taken with iron-filtered cobalt radiation in a 114.6-mm-diam Debye-Scherrer camera. High-angle lines were always resolved and spacings were computed relative to ? (CoKa1) = 1.78890Å. Lattice parameters were obtained from extrapolation against the Nelson-Riley function. The variation of lattice parameter with composition is shown in Fig. 1, together with the data of Dasarathy and Hume-Rothery.1 Uncertainties in the present measurements are within the dimensions of the symbols or indicated by error bars. X-ray diffraction lines indicative of CsC1-type ordering could be clearly identified for alloys of 34 - 50 at. pet Ga quenched from the liquid and alloys of 35 - 41 at. pet Ga quenched from -975°C. A calculation method has been developed for carbonated water flooding. This method takes into account the effects of oil viscosity reduction and oil swelling, due to carbon dioxide transferred to the reservoir oil from the carbonated flood water. It shows the effect of changes in carbonation pressure and carbonated water slug size. The method is based on a Buckley-Leverett-type linear flow model. The mathematical approach is similar to that developed by Welge, et al, for enriched gas drives. However, it contains a very important advance over the previous papers in its solution to the problem of injection of a "slug" of carbonated water rather than continuous injection of fluid of constant composition. The method also shows the chromatographic nature of the transport of Co 2 in a carbonated water flood. Sample calculations indicate that viscosity reduction is the most important source of incremental oil recovery. Swelling contributes to a lesser extent. Raising the carbonation pressure increases recovery, but this effect diminishes as pressure is increased. increasing the slug size also increases recovery, but again this effect diminishes as slug size is increased. INTRODUCTION In recent years there has been considerable interest in carbonated water flooding as a secondary recovery method. Several carbonated waterflood field tests are now in progress.1'3 Yet there is no published method for predicting the results of a carbonated water flood. This paper presents a method for predicting the oil recovery for ; carbonated water flood. In a carbonated water flood. a carbonated water slug is injected into the reservoir. Then this slug is driven forward by injecting plain water behind it. The field operator must choose the carbonated water slug size and the CO2:water ratio in the slug. The calculation method presented here shows the effects of both slug size and CO2:water ratio on oil recovery. The calculation assumes that the addition of carbon dioxide to flood water increases the oil recovery by two mechanisms: 1. Carbon dioxide transfers from the flood water to the oil, thereby reducing the viscosity of the oil. At the lower viscosity, the oil flows more readily and is more easily swept out by flood water. 2. The carbon dioxide which transfers to the oil phase causes the oil phase to swell. Assume that the residual oil saturation (volume per cent of pore space) is the same whether the oil is carbonated or not. Then the same volume will contain less stock tank oil if it is carbonated, due to oil swelling. The plain water driving the carbonated water slug forward will strip the CO2 out of this residual oil., causing this oil to shrink. This swelling-followed-by-shrinking leaves behind a lower residual oil saturation than would have been left behind by a plain water flood. Since some oils swell to almost twice their original volume at reasonable CO2 pressures, this effect may be large. Two additional benefits sometimes claimed for carbonated water flooding are: 1. Adding CO2 to flood water greatly increases the water injectivity in some cases.1 (Injectivity = BPD of water injected/ft of sand x differential bottom-hole pressure, psi.) CO2 forms a weak acid in water; injecting carbonated water is, therefore, somewhat like acid treating. If a formation responds to acid treating, it will probably have a higher injectivity for carbonated water than for plain water. Although the increased injectivity increases the profitability of a carbonated water flood over a plain water flood, it does not change the production curve based on total fluid injected. Therefore, the method presented here does not show any effect of increased injectivity. 2. It is claimed in one patent4 that carbon dioxide will react with some constituents of the oil to form detergents. These detergents are expected to increase the oil recovery. There is little data available to support this idea. The calculation method presented here takes no credit for extra oil recovery due to the formation of any such detergents.

THE suggestion, which appears to find increasing favor, that the elementary composition of coals should be used as the basis of their classification, makes it important that our methods of expressing this elementary composition should be refined. It is doubtful whether many published ultimate analyses of coals are accurate within 1 per cent. carbon. Many are probably as much as 3 or 2 per cent. in error in carbon. It is, perhaps, not always realized that the extreme variation in carbon content over the range of bituminous coals is but 16 per cent. An error of 1 per cent. in carbon on analysis corresponds therefore with one-sixteenth of the whole range, an amount which is unjustifiable even for the application to commercial needs of a system of classification based on ultimate analysis. For the purposes of scientific research such limited accuracy is of little value. The object of this paper is to examine one important source of error in ultimate analysis, that due to the occurrence in coal of inorganic material, and to emphasize the need for the quantitative measurements (of carbon more particularly) on coals to be rendered independent of their contents of such material.

A SEMI-AUTOMATIC hoist has been installed at the 2966 station of the Copper Queen mine, since neither the bulk of supplies handled nor the number of men engaged in developing the 3100 level justifies the constant attendance of two cagers and two hoist operators. The connecting service shaft between the 2966 and 3100 levels is actually a two-compartment raise. Below the 2966 level the shaft is 7x13 ft-slightly oversize to permit downcast ventilation and provide space for the 16-conductor flexible control cable. The raise extends 52 ft above the 2966 level for a 3-ft diam head sheave. Another 3-ft sheave is mounted as an idler between the hoist and head sheave, eliminating the need for an inclined cableway. The main compartment serves as a cageway; the other compartment provides a manway and space for service lines. Since vertical travel is limited, rope speed is of minor importance.

In addition to the (bcc) - (cph) transformation at 882°C a second distinct change of slope has been observed on a titanium cooling curve between 905" and 960°C.1,4 Duwez,1 commenting on work by McQuillan,2-4 attributed this arrest to contamination of the specimen with oxygen—a possibility that existed even at the reduced pressure of 10-5 mm Hg at which the experiments were conducted.

Computer analyses of the trafficability of copper mine tailings by four different commercially available BWEs were performed. A mathematical model incorporating the tailings' Coulomb strength parameters and the vehicles' geometry and operational characteristics was used to study the vehicle terrain interaction. The computer output provides the maximum tractive force (net drawbar pull) that each BWE can develop for given tailings conditions without bnngzng about a state of plastic failure in the tailings. Estimates of sinkage are also provided. The theoretical results for the BWEs and tailings studied compare favorably with the operating experience of similar BWEs used for remining gold tailings in South Africa. This lends some confidence to the validity of the mathematical model. The results of such analyses may be wed to evaluate, on a relative basis, which of a number of different machines would perform better than others under given conditions of a tailings deposit.

GUILLAUME,* .Sèvres, France written discussion?).-Referring top. 2052, experiments made at the end of the year 1884showed a remarkable agreement between the indications of various verre dur thermometers of which all the corrections had been determined with the greatest possible precision. The maximum deviations not attributable to the comparisons themselves were then about 0.002 to 0.003 degree. Much later, greater differences began to show. They were caused by the fact that the glassmaker-had modified the composition by adding to it a small quantity of lead. Efforts are now being made in France to obtain a regular, supply of glass made according to the old formula. The determination of the boiling point of sulfur made by Chappuis,1 444.5°, accords very well with the value noted on p. 2054. The International Committee of Weights and Measures and the General Conference have already considered the future abandonment of the hydrogen scale in favor of the thermodynamic scale. The hydro-gen scale appears to be, in their estimation, a transitory one, happily so closely approaching the final scale that no correction should be necessary for all measurements of temperature made during the last 30 years.

In September, 1975, production was begun at the new milling facility of ASARCO Incorporated, the Young Mill. The mill is located adjacent to the Young Mine 35 km (22 miles) east of Knoxville, Tennessee. The Young Mill replaced the obsolete Mascot Mill which had been operating since 1913. The basic flow sheet of Mascot was retained for the construction of the Young Mill, with a 20% increase in capacity included in the design. The Young Mill is capable of processing 7710 - t/d (8500 stpd) of crude ore from three underground mines (Young, Immel and Coy) yielding 300 - t/d (330 stpd) of 63% zinc concentrate. The Young Mill is unique in that 92.5% of the ore milled is recovered as saleable products, including zinc concentrate, construction aggregate, sand and agricultural limestone. Processing at the Young Mill is divided into five basic stages: two-stage crushing, heavy media separation, grinding-flotation, concentrate filtering and drying, and limestone by-products recovery. The ore bodies are located in the Knox formation, which consists of primary dolomite, secondary dolomite and limestone with silicas in the form of chert and jasperoid. The zinc mineralization occurs as an exceptionally pure sphalerite. The ore contains an occasional abundance of pyrite and traces of fluorite and barite. TWO STAGE CRUSHING Ore enters the crushing section from two points. The Young Mine ore is hoisted into a 816 ton (900 st) bin which feeds a 1.52m (60 in) conveyor via a 1.52 m (60 in) vibrating feeder. The Immel ore is trucked 10 km (6 miles) by an independent contractor and weighed on automatic recording truck scales at the entrance to the property.
