Considering the two great interests of to-day, in iron upon the one hand and steel upon the other, and recognizing with measurable distinctness the peculiar fitness of each for special services to which they are applied, the proposition to unite the two metals in combination, to bring into simultaneous use the peculiar advantages which each offers, has great attractions. The limited success which has been attained by trying to bring about such combinations of the two metals through the use of fluxes in welding, has led to the general adoption of the opinion that an effective union of the two metals is impracticable, or to the view that if practicable it would have but limited commercial value. Such opinions are, I think, premature and erroneous, and having gained some knowledge of the character and value of the "Wheeler process" for welding iron and steel without the use of fluxes, I submit the following observations and opinions of the matter for your information, with the hope of eliciting such a discussion of the subject as it may require. The principle of the invention is to bring the two metals simultaneously to a welding heat in one pile, and then to manipulate it.

Laboratory flood pot testing of California sands has progressed to a considerable extent in the past 18 months. Flood evaluations have been carried out on over 200 large core samples. Many of these were heavy oil sands of high permeability and completely unconsolidated in nature. The oil frequently formed a bank, though some of the oil was recovered in the subordinate phase of the flood, by viscous drag. Flood pot recoveries as high as 1400 bbl/acre ft have been recorded. Reservoir analysis suggests a conformance factor of 0.4 to reduce laboratory recovery to probable field practice. Oils with viscosities up to 1800 cp have been successfully handled in flood pot evaluations. The shallow, loose sands are not well adapted to the application of- high pressures to offset the high viscosities. INTRODUCTION Secondary recovery may be said to have started 60 years ago when accidental floods occurred in the Bradford sand in Pennsylvania. About 1921 artificially conducted water drives came into extensive use and since that time the great Bradford field has been almost completely subjected to water flooding. During the last 30 years, most of the known medium and deeper production in California has been discovered and is being exploited by primary recovery methods supplemented in some instances by high pressure gas injection. The California area is just beginning to feel the need for secondary recovery in view of an unprecedented market demand and the rapidly rising cost of new pool discoveries. With the presently recognized desirability of secondary recovery in California, there must also be appreciated a number of serious differences between the water flooding problems here as compared to the territory east of the Rockies. California sands are generally thicker, and are frequently soft and argillaceous. The oils are often heavier and asphaltic. Much of the oil is below 15°API, occurs at shallow depth, is cool and free from appreciable dissolved gas, which results in relatively high reservoir oil viscosity. Secondary recovery is particularly beneficial where primary recovery has been poor and where no natural water drive exists. These conditions apply particularly to the heavy, shallow, clean production from soft, often argillaceous California sands so abundantly found at depths less than 1500 feet. Often, too, there is a totally insufficient supply of water of satisfactory quality to inject at a reasonable cost. Also, the crude oils are priced far below the premium Bradford crude. Although these and a number of minor problems beset the operator desirous of starting secondary recovery, great progress has been made in the past few years in finding how to adapt previous Mid-Continent and Eastern experience to water flooding in California. There are about nine projects for subsurface injection of water which can be said to classify as secondary recovery operations. Subsurface water disposal would so classify when the sand receiving the water is a nearby oil producer, as is often the case. When water is injected subsurface into a barren sand, the operation does not classify as secondary recovery. Several of the most active operators avail themselves extensively of preliminary engineering and laboratory work to guide their decisions, while others enter small scale flooding operations directly in the field. It is the laboratory work pertinent to several of the California secondary recovery projects that this paper discusses. PURPOSES OF LABORATORY FLOODING TESTS Experience in areas where water flood operations have been carried out has indicated that careful engineering planning is an important requisite for subsequent economically successful field operation. Floods that fail are more frequently those where operations were instigated without a prior engineering investigation to determine the effectiveness of the injection fluid as an oil displacing medium. Laboratory data are essential in the evaluation of an oil property for secondary recovery possibilities. Success or failure of secondary operations can under certain special circumstances be determined directly by cores and their subsequent routine analysis. This is particularly the case where flushing of the cores in the course of coring is negligible and where the results of the analysis can be compared with existing secondary recovery operations. Where these conditions cannot be' fulfilled, the application of core analysis is more limited. In such event, the results obtained by water flooding core samples in the laboratory have been found to be of prime importance. Cores may be flooded "raw" as taken from the well or in the event flushing and depletion of the cores in the process of drilling are major factors the fluid content may be artificially restored prior to the flooding. Laboratory studies should also be made to determine the suitability of the water selected for injection. Thus interaction between injected and formation water may cause precipitates to be formed which may plug the sand. Even more important, especially to California operations, is the possibility of the hydration of formation clays by the injection water. The aims of flood pot and associated tests are basically to determine the residual oil saturation after flood, the water-oil throughput ratio and to establish whether an oil bank is formed. Additional information which can be obtained from flood pot tests pertains to the pressure differential required to effect displacement, the relative permeability to oil in the oil bank and the relative permeability to water in the watered out region behind the bank.

IN the third year of war, geophysical oil exploration broke all records to keep pace with the demand for increased reserves. Geophysical prospecting for strategic and other minerals also grew in scope. The trend of geophysical oil exploration throughout the war is indicated in Fig. 1. This figure resembles the one presented in the last annual review issue of M&M (February 1944, p. 62), corrected for data on-operations in the last months of 1943 and extended into 1944. The average number of geophysical oil prospecting crews in the field in 1944 was 451, whereas the total in 1943 was 340. An upward trend in the use of all geophysical methods is clearly evident throughout the year. Seismic operations were 67 per cent, gravimeter surveys 28 per cent, and other methods 5 per cent of the total. Seismic reflection and refraction crews increased 181/2 per cent over the 1943 average, gravimeter operations increased 73 per cent, and other methods gained 92 per cent. The increase in seismic and gravimeter operations, particularly the latter, is probably due to an increased production of equipment and the organization of new service companies. Miscellaneous methods gained largely through a revival of magnetometer work, and an increase in the use of torsion balances and electrical equipment. In comparison with the prewar average of 1941, it is noteworthy that seismic operations increased 58 per cent, gravimeter operations 88 per cent, and miscellaneous other methods gained as much as 283 per cent. Unfortunately the expansion in the number of geophysical crews does not indicate a proportionate increase in efficiency or in areal coverage, as will be brought out later.

THE reduction of tungstic oxide to tungsten metal powder by hydrogen is a process by which one might expect the resultant metal powder to be porous. In- [ ] deed, sponge iron, prepared by reduction of the oxide in a reducing gas, is generally accepted as quite porous, with pores large enough to be seen readily under the optical microscope at relatively low magnifications. However, any pores that may exist in tungsten metal powder are not resolved by the optical microscope, and apparently, not even by the electron microscope. Fig I shows commercial tungsten powder magnified at 10,000X by the electron microscope,1 both etched and unetched. In an earlier paper by one of the authors,2 the existence of pores in tungsten powder [ ] was required to explain adequately the particle size changes occurring during the reduction of tungstic oxide. The inability to detect these pores under the electron microscope at 10,000 X implies that these pores are of a size of 100 A units or less. (This in itself is by no means proof that pores above 100 A would not exist, since polishing effects on the specimen might smear up holes of such small magnitude). If, then, these pores are less than 100 A, and of the order of molecular size, then the density of the metal powder should be

HOFMAN, Boston, Mass.:-I have hunted in vain for a figure which gives a dehydration temperature of cement. I was wondering if Mr. Stütz had a figure of that kind. E. STÜTZ :-No, I am afraid I have not. H. 0. HOFMAN :-I believe some figures have been published that cement disintegrates at 400° or 500° C. It seems tome a very low temperature. Mr. Stütz just made the statement that the disintegration of this briquette begins at the temperature at which the briquette begins to sinter. E. STÜTZ :-Above the sintering point. H. 0. HOFMAN :-The sintering point would be about 1,200° C. E. STÜTZ :-Yes, roughly speaking. I am afraid I have no information about the exact degree of dehydration. H. O. HOFMAN :-I have looked a great deal for such a figure and I have not been able to obtain it. Professor Howe says I might have tried myself. But my interests were directed in another line; although-that is, perhaps, a good suggestion. CHAIRMAN RICHARDS:-Is not Portland cement sometimes used for the test in a cupellation furnace and a drying-out furnace ? H. O. HOFMAN :-Yes, it is used, but that is a higher temperature, of course. But I have been trying to get a figure as to where it loses all its water. I understand it begins to lose water at 500° C. But there are different silicates or hydrosilicates in the cement, so that one would have four or five or sit figures to show the different stages at which the cement loses its water. CHAIRMAN RICHARDS :-I would ask whether the use of this material in blast furnaces has shown increased capacity of furnace or decreased consumption of fuel.

Representatives Of The Technologic Branch Of The U. S. Geological Survey, To Whom The Investigation Of Mine-Accidents Had Recently Been Delegated By The Secretary Of The Interior,. Visited The Mines And Co-Operated With The Local Authorities In Their Determinations. On Jan. 8, 1905, The Coal-Operators Of West Virginia Organized An Association At Washington For The Purpose Of Making Extensive Investigations, And Sufficient Funds Were Pledged To Carry Out This Work. An Examination Of The Various Reports Concerning These Accidents Indicates That The Explosions Were Caused By The Ignition Of Gas Or Dust; They Show The Point Of Origin And The Direction In Which The Force Was Expended, And Give A Detailed Description Of The Damage Done. THE Birmingham red iron ore district in Jefferson County, north central Alabama, Fig. 1, is bounded on the northwest by the Warrior and Plateau coal fields and on the southeast by the Cahaba and Coosa coal fields. The area of study includes the ridge and valley between Red Mountain and Shades Mountain, Fig. 2, approximately 70 square miles extending from Homewood in the northeast to Greenwood in the southwest. The district is one of the most important producers of hematite in the United States, with an annual production of about 7 million tons. The amount of hematite mined between 1870 and 1950 ranged from 6 to 16 pct of the nation's total annual production, and the iron and steel products from blast furnaces in the Birmingham district supply the entire southeastern section of the country.

After years of struggling against heavy odds, patient endurance in periods of depression and loss, fears and hopes alternating as failure or success seemed to be the penalty or reward ; wanting in sufficient capital, embarrassed by reason of imperfect knowledge and lack of skilled labor, confronted by a powerful foe-every doubt has at last vanished, physical and mechanical difficulties have been largely overcome, capital has become more abundant and remunerative, the excellence of our product has been everywhere established, - and the peculiarities of American character-pluck, energy, and perseverance -have at last placed the trade upon a foundation so broad and stable that upon it we begin to erect the structure of a world-wide business. Concerning the future of the iron trade in the United States there can be but little doubt. The growing scarcity and constantly increasing cost of raw material in Great Britain, their loss of labor by emigration, the social disturbances among the working-classes, assuming a more threatening attitude on each new outbreak ; the rapidly decreasing value of money, in consequence of the enormous production of gold and silver, combine to forbid any return to former prices, and indicate that a point has been reached beyond which any marked increase of production is improbable. The same causes are operating to a greater or lesser extent upon the Continent. . In the meanwhile the growing wants of humanity are rapidly outstripping these sources of supply. MANY attempts have been made to develop a relation between the tensile properties and the deep-stamping qualities of metals com-monly used in deep drawing. These operations are generally performed cold and the metal is always stressed beyond the elastic limit. However, the problem cannot be readily solved without a proper investigation of (1) the relation between actual stress and actual strain in the plastic range and (2) the stresses that are set up in the metal during the process of deep stamping. Much work has been done in recent years to add to our knowledge on plastic deformation of metals and the shortcomings of the ordinary tensile test, particularly in the plastic range, have been sufficiently recognized. It has been widely acknowledged that the local contraction, which appears in a tensile test after the maximum load is reached, is not a general characteristic of the material but is peculiar to this form of testing. The plastic deformation of materials is explained by the slip of their crystals along certain planes and this rearrangement should be similar whether observed in a tensile, compression or torsion test, and if the results of any of these forms of testing show deviations, it must be due to other influences, as for example the local contraction in a tensile test. For this reason the tensile-test curve as obtained from the measurements taken on a tensile-test machine or registered by an autographic device has been supplemented by the so-called "actual stress-strain curve," which is constructed from the observed tensile-test data by eliminating the effect of local contraction and is in complete alignment with the stress-strain values obtained in a compression or torsion test. LAVES and Wallbaum' reported that the phases occurring at the compositions TiFe, TiRu, and TiOs, which are stable over a wide range of temperatures and are separated from neighboring phases by wide two phase fields, have a CsC1-type ordered structure. For TiRu and TiOs, this was recently confirmed by C. B. Jordan.2 Recent results of Greenfield and Beck3 show that solid solutions with ruthenium of the body-centered-cubic elements vanadium and tantalum (and presumably also of colum-bium) in group Va of the periodic table undergo CsC1-type ordering. Although detailed phase diagrams for these systems are not yet available, it would appear that these ordered structures are separated from the neighboring body-centered-cubic solid solutions by relatively narrow two phase fields.

Three periods of major activity have led to the development of the present mineral industry in northern Canada. At the turn of the century, placer gold was discovered in the Yukon Territory and production has been continued to the present day. In the late 1920's and early 1930's, vigorous aircraft- aided exploration resulted in the discovery and production of radium at Port Radium on the southern shore of Great Bear Lake and of gold at Yellowknife on the north shore of Great Slave Lake. During this period, oil was discovered at Norman Wells. Present mineral production is today largely derived from deposits which have been developed in the 1950's. Among these are the re-opened deposits of United Keno Hill, uranium deposits at Uranium City, natural gas resources from the Peace River gas area, nickel-copper deposits at Lynn Lake and Rankin Inlet, and the Cassiar Asbestos deposits at McDame Mountain.

Report of the Secretary TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND THE MEMBERS OF THE AMERICAN INSTI¬TUTE OF MINING AND METALLURGICAL ENGINEERS GENTLEMEN As will be shown by the special reports of the Finance, Membership, Library, Papers and Publications, Increase of Membership, and other standing Committees, together with that of the Treasurer, the year 1927 was one in which the Institute made very satisfactory progress in a number of directions. In total numbers the membership is no larger but in revenue from dues there has been a marked increase. This has been due to the promotion to full membership of Junior Associates of earlier years, to the larger proportion that come in originally as members rather than juniors, and to the keener interest in the work of the Institute reflected in prompter payment of dues. The latter is important, since experience shows that of those who fall behind a large number must ultimately be dropped for non-payment. Conditions in the mining in¬dustries have been healthy though not booming. It has been much easier for members to find employment and meet their financial obligations but there has not been that flow of young men into mining, and hence in part into the Institute, that characterized certain earlier years. Rather the tendency toward centralization and larger industrial units has re¬stricted the number, though not the scope, of opportunities for technical men in the mineral industries. The Institute is constantly receiving resignations from members crowded out of mining into other lines of activity. On the other hand, those who remain in mining and metal¬lurgy have a greatly increased necessity for information and contacts with technology. A few years ago many superintendents and most foremen were non-technical men. Today the reverse rule obtains and shift bosses and men who occupy even lower positions in industrial units are called upon to know and to apply such an amount of technical knowl¬edge that graduate engineers are the rule rather than the exception. The curious situation has obtained that with a much smaller enrollment of students in the schools of mining and metallurgy there has been at times an actual shortage of young engineers for beginners' jobs. The young men retort that the conditions of employment and pay offered in mining are not equal to those in other lines and, while it is undoubtedly true that the young engineer beginning in mining is able to start under conditions markedly better as to pay, living, and responsibility than did the men who are now leaders, they are required to know much more and have usually spent more in time and money to qualify for their jobs. A simple robust rock bolt load gage was tested in the laboratory to define its characteristic behavior and to obtain a measure of its performance. The gage uses three vibrating wire sensors crimped 120 (2.09 rad) apart into the outer surface of a hollow cylindrical steel, tube. The resonant frequencies of the wires change as the gage is loaded. This change is read with a Creare meter developed for the Bureau of Mines on a previous contract to read borehole stress gage results. A statistical analysis of data obtained defines the variables influencing results. A U.S. patent (3,914,992) assigned by the author to the Dept. of the Interior was granted Oct. 28, 1975.

R. T. Hukki has extended his study of ball mill grinding at supercritical speeds with an excellent mathematical analysis of tumbling mill grinding. When he speaks of supercritical speeds he is referring to the original Fahrenwald critical-speed formula. He said that, as an example of the use of supercritical speeds, if a fine grinding mill of any type is wet-grinding ore of 3.5 sp gr with steel balls at a certain conventional subcritical speed, the same power input and capacity should be obtainable with autogenous medium of 3.5 sp gr at a speed 100 to 120 pct of the critical in a grate- type mill of the same effective size. In addition, he introduced what he calls the base mill concept which, he stated, makes it possible to compare performances of mills of different sizes grinding with a metallic medium or with an autogenous medium of any specific gravity and at any speed. He showed the use of this concept and explained how it makes possible the evaluation of mill sizes and motors for any grinding purpose at any accuracy well within the conventional standards of design in milling practice. He further stated that the maximum capacity in pilot plant mills with various media, either metallic or autogenous, has always been found to be within the supercritical speed range. In his discussion of this paper he substantiated these findings with statements showing the increased capacity obtained in a milling plant in Finland which followed his principles.

ALTHOUGH the exclusion of foreigners and private owners from participation in the development of the. Russian oil fields prevents first-hand information being obtained, both official and private news indicate a growing appreciation of the value of the country's oil resources. Notwithstanding the suppression of that initiative and energy which only ambition can adequately stimulate, the industry is progressing and exports of products are assuming an importance that cannot be disregarded as an economic factor in the world's oil business. The following notes and observations must be regarded mainly as the views of one who has closely followed the fortunes of Russian oil, when considering the changes that have taken place in geological knowledge and oil-field technique, which have so profoundly modified oil-fields methods. Russia is fortunate in having retained the services of. a few scientists and technologists whose devotion to science has superseded their personal inclinations, and to these few men must be attributed the slow, but nevertheless striking, progress that has been made. The productive oil fields of Russia are centered around the Caspian Sea which, with its connected river system, constitutes such an ideal means of internal distribution for products. From the group of oilfields of which the. city of Baku forms a center, oil is pumped to Black-town, a suburb of Baku, where all the refineries are situated. The next important group of oil fields is located in the Terek district near Grosny, where refineries are erected and the products are piped or carried by tank cars to Petrovsk for the internal Russian market, or sent to the Black Sea by rail. A third oil field is spread over the province of Uralsk, north of the Caspian, Sea, the main port of outlet being Gourief, at the mouth of the River Ural. In Trans-Caspia there are two oil-field centers, one near Krasnovodsk on Chelekan Island, and one in Central Asia at Ferghana. The product of the former fields is transported to Baku for treatment, while the output of the Turkestan field is refined and consumed locally, mainly by the railway.

REPRESENTED here are the ideas and varied experiences of many people in the Hanna Coal Co. who have helped develop, over a number of years, an efficient and flexible method for spraying con- trolled amounts of oil on coal. Since the George- town preparation plant began operations early in 1951, oil treatment of coal has received special attention. It is believed that oil treating will satisfy present customers and also attract new markets. The first step in developing the new method of oil spraying was the construction of a dust cabinet for testing 50-lb samples of treated coal with the available oil sprays on the market. Tests results were tabulated for both indoor and outdoor storage.
