The growing importance of screening makes an accurate measure of the quality of a sizing operation desirable. Screen efficiency is considered equal to the percentage of true undersize in the feed obtained as undersize from the screen. This method is unreliable, as it gives the same credit for removing minus 200-mesh material as for removing material just able to pass the aperature of the screen. A more accurate measure of screen efficiency is to consider only the work done on the "difficult" grains, that is, those grains of which the intermediate diameters closely approach the screen aperture.. The application of this method is given, together with the derivation of formulas and an example of their use. Is AN accurate measurement of the efficiency of a screen under a given set of operating conditions valuable? If so, what is the efficiency; of, a screen and how can it be measured? Sizing, especially of the finer sizes of material, has increased in importance in the development of flow sheets as a result of the perfecting of the rapid vibrating screens. More consideration should be given screens in the preparation of ball-mill feed, where they permit the admission of a dryer feed than, the classifier. Where possible, the introduction of a screen ahead of the primary ball-mill, and the diverting of ore below, say, 4 mm. to a secondary mill, might result in a greater overall economy because of the thicker feed and the better, adjustment of crushing media and mill operation to the reduction demanded. With the present trend back toward a combination of gravity methods and flotation, rather than flotation alone, the accurate, economical sizing possible with the new screens makes fine jigging a method to be considered. Introduction This is the Pacific Rim. Nearly three fourths of the world's population live on or near its border. In the recent past, on any given day, one could find traversing its„ borders pirates, smugglers, gunrunners, missionaries, slave traders, tourists, and businessmen. If one were not too observant, he would notice that over the last several years the ocean traffic in the Rim has pretty much stayed the same--Polynesian outriggers, passenger ships, general cargo vessels, ore carriers, and oil tankers. If he were to look a little closer, he would notice some coal colliers. A still closer look would reveal that most of them were hauling metallurgical coal destined for the steel mills of Japan, Taiwan, or Korea. If his senses were keen, he would observe that not only were the number of colliers increasing dramatically, but also that a relatively new cargo was being carried to those countries as well as additional areas in the Pacific Rim., This new cargo thermal coal holds the promise of not only exceeding the metallurgical coal trade, but significantly cutting into and decreasing the already vast oil tanker business throughout the Pacific Rim. The high price of crude oil as a result of the oil embargo in the Middle East in 1973-74 has forced the Pacific Rim countries to convert to coal, and as a result, the coal resources of the Rim are being exploited at an ever-increasing rate. Although coal produced outside the Pacific Rim does enter its borders for ultimate consumption from such places as South Africa and the East Coast of the United States, the vast majority of thermal coal that will enter this booming market place will be sourced from countries within the Pacific Rim. Accordingly, this paper will provide an overview of those sources with particular emphasis on the non-communist block nations. This is not to say that countries such as China and Russia will not be players in the Pacific Rim thermal coal arena, but that -most consuming countries in the Rim are basing the majority of their near-term sourcing requirements from countries that provide a stable source of supply. Pacific Rim Coal Resources Figure 1 is a map of the Pacific Rim countries and identification of major coal resource locations within its border. Going in a clockwise direction, the following countries will be the major suppliers of thermal coal through the year 2000: Australia, Indonesia, China, Russia, Alaska (U.S.), Canada, United States (Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana), and Colombia, South America. Other countries such as New Zealand, Malaysia, Philippines, Korea, etc., will play a role in supply, but compared to the ones previously mentioned, will only have a minor impact. When one looks at the vast stretch of ocean that separates the sourcing countries from the consuming countries (Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, etc.), one realizes that costs of transportation will play a significant role in determining which countries and in what quantities coal will be purchased. A three-dimensional photoelastic study was made to determine the stress state around the wall and bottom of a wellbore due to fluid pressure within the wellbore and unequal principal geostatic stresses. Models simulating the wellbore were made from a phthalic anhydride-cured epoxy resin. The frozen stress technique of three-dimensional photoelastic-ity was used to determine the stresses within the model. Two separate problems were solved: (1) hydrostatic pressure on all sides of the model with the exception of the inside of the hole, and (2) uniaxial compression perpendicular to the center line of the hole. The results are presented in the form of contour curves for each stress component. The curves cover a region which extends several hole radii from the bottom and wall of the hole. By proper use of these results, the state of stress may be calculated for any point on the wall or bottom of the hole, as well as for any point within the material that surrounds the hole. A systematic method is given for calculating these stress components for any combination of fluid pressure within the wellbore and system of unequal principal geostatic stresses, provided one of the principal geostatic stresses is parallel with the wellbore. The results show that stresses around the wall and bottom of a wellbore, induced by an uneyual system of principal geostatic stresses, are appreciably different from those induced by geostatic stresses that are hydrostatic. For uneyual principal geostatic stresses, the experimentally determined stresses on the wall of the hole several radii from the bottom are in good agreement with the stresses calculated by elastic theory. INTRODUCTION Interest in the problem of determining the stresses around and near the bottom of a wellbore, due to geostatic loading and fluid pressure within the wellbore, originated in the petroleum industry. The stresses on the wall of the wellbore are of interest due to their relation to lost circulation during drilling, the fracturing of formations during squeeze cementing and hydraulic fracturing of producing formations. The stresses on the bottom of the hole are of interest to the drilling segment of the industry because to produce a hole in the earth it is necessary to remove material from the bottom of the hole. This removal of material is produced by structural failure of the rock, whatever the criterion for failure may be. Cunningham and Eeninkl have shown that for certain conditions the effect on drilling rate of the bottom-hole stresses caused by a hydrostatic overburden pressure is small compared to other effects. This question, however, needs further experimental and analytical investigation. Much information concerning the stresses on the walls of wellbores has been published considering both equal and unequal principal geostatic stresses. The problem of determining the stresses around the bottom of the wellbore is considerably more complicated. However, previous investigators have obtained numerical and experimental solutions to the problem for equal principal geostatic stresses. whitworth2 and woods3 have obtained numerical solutions. word415 obtained a three-dimensional photoelastic solution, Durelli and Deily 6 obtained surface stresses only by photoelastic means, and Cheatham and Wilhoit7 determined the stresses around the bottom of a short cylindrical cavity. While Miles and McGuire, Harrison and Kieschnick and Hubbert and Willis 10 obtained the stresses on the wall of a wellbore for unequal principal geostatic stresses, they did not concern themselves with the stresses near the bottom of the hole. The estimates made by Hubbert and Willis of the differences between the principal geostatic stresses indicate that, to obtain a satisfactory solution for the stresses around the bottom of a wellbore, unequal principal geostatic stresses should be considered. Reserve Mining Co. produces 5 million tons of iron ore pellets per year. The finished product runs about 65.50 pct Fe, with 7.75 to 8.00 pct SiO2. Less than 12 pct arrives at the blast furnaces smaller than % in. This plant was originally designed to produce 3.75 tons annually—not 5 million. To handle the increased tonnage a fifth fine crushing line was added, and some very minor changes were made. When production can be stepped up 33 1/3 pct without extensive additions or changes—within the short period of a year—basic engineering has been sound. Operators of the plant consider it the best design job they have seen or heard of, and competent authorities have said that start-up was quicker and easier than for any previous large-scale minerals beneficiation plant. One big advantage is the elbow room allowed. Generally speaking, there is an eternal conflict between operator and designer over space. The designer has his costs per cubic foot, and he is keenly aware that if he permits the number of cubic feet to rise unnecessarily, total costs will be too high. But this was a new operation, and on a large scale. There were no proven standards to go by. Realizing this, Reserve's engineers provided ample and efficient access to machinery, allowing extra space for unanticipated situations. In three years of production this planning has paid off handsomely. Gravity Flow Saves Time and Money: This plant is on a rocky hillside, the car dumper about 270 ft above Lake Superior. In locating buildings and placing machinery the designers mad= good use of gravity flow, at considerable financial savings. In the concentrator building from rod mills to filters, gravity carries the material between all stages of the operation except one—the closed circuit pumping of concentrate between cone classifiers and ball mills. Since no machine is located directly above any other, an observer can stand on the truck ramp adjacent to the offices and laboratory and see practically every phase of activity in the huge building. The use of nuclear explosives for excavation has been demonstrated to be feasible and practical. Application of nuclear explosives for overburden removal from large ore deposits appears to offer economic advantages over present methods, but under the present pricing schedule, high-yield devices must be used to obtain an economic advantage. The use of nuclear explosives presents problems not inherent in the use of conventional explosives, and thus they can be used only in areas where large explosions and associated phenomena can be tolerated. Stripping of coal with nuclear explosives does not appear practical at this time, but stripping overburden from copper or iron ore deposits may be a potential use. Even here, however, the use of nuclear explosives would require isolation, favorable topography, favorable ground-water conditions, and a low population density. If these basic requirements can be met, the use of nuclear explosives for overburden removal would offer both economic and time advantages. The possibility of using nuclear explosives for peaceful purposes was a subject for speculation as early as 1945. The PLOWSHARE Program was formally established by the AEC in June 1957 for the purpose of developing and demonstrating peaceful applications for nuclear explosives. The technical direction of the program is the responsibility of the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory, Livermore, Calif. Mining and excavation were two fields that received early consideration as areas in which nuclear explosives might be used. Knowledge gained from underground weapons testing increased this possibility, and the development of the thermonuclear device which has a small fission-to-fission ratio, reduced the hazard of radiation, and spurred interest. Nuclear explosives appear to have the greatest potential in the following mining operations: 1.— Surface Mining a) Stripping of waste for open-pit excavation b) Breaking of ore in open-pit mining c) Quarrying d) Blasting for production of aggregate, riprap, etc. 2. — Underground Mining a) Block caving application b) Crushing of ore for in-situ leaching, etc. c) Preparation of underground waste disposal areas Of the potential applications, excavation is perhaps the most obvious and the best understood, and probably the most practical for use in the near future. Large quantities of rock and earth can be moved by proper emplacement of nuclear explosives, but economic and practical relationship must be determined between the known capabilities of nuclear explosives and the required excavating to remove overburden. REMOVING OVERBURDEN IN OPEN-PIT MINING Removing the overburden is one of the largest jobs in open-pit mining. In 1960 open-pit mines produced approximately 130 million tons of coal, 108 million tons of copper ore, and 135 million tons of iron ore. To obtain this much production, an estimated 3-billion tons of overburden were removed from the coal, 216 million tons from the copper ore, and 135 million tons from the iron ore. These figures do not include the initial stripping required before ore production. For example, the ASARCO Mission mine started stripping operations in August 1959 and by mid-November 1961 had removed 46.3 million tons of material including 1.2 million tons of ore.* Initial excavation of this type offers the most favorable conditions for utilizing the earth-moving ability of nuclear explosives. EXPLOSIVE CASTING FOR REMOVING OVERBURDEN The use of explosives to remove overburden is not a new idea. Conventional explosives have been used for this purpose for many years with varying degrees of success. Several small coal strip operators have used this idea to increase production. At these mines about one-third or more of the overburden is thrown by explosives across the pit and onto spoil piles. The additional costs of drilling more blast holes and more explosives are more than compensated for by a reduction in the time required to uncover the coal, and by an increase in coal production.

INTRODUCTION THE Furbero oil field lies in the Gulf coastal plain of Mexico between the important ports of Tampico and Vera Cruz and about one-third of the distance between the two points from the latter (Lat. 20° 22' N., 97° 30' W. Gren.). It is in the State of Vera Cruz, about 14 miles west by south of the village of Papantla in the canton of the same name, and is the most southern of the developed oil fields of the Tampico-Tuxpam region being a distance of 50 miles south by east from the Potrero del Llano field and 42 miles in the sane direction from the Alamo field. The field has been developed by the Oil Fields of Mexico Co. and is in the midst of a large block of lands owned or leased by then. Communication is through the port of Tuxpam with which it is connected by a narrow-gauge railway and 6-in. pipe line some 52 miles in length. This field is of more than ordinary interest since it represents a type of oil deposit hitherto unknown. So far as I am aware, no other commercially valuable deposit of oil is known to occur under conditions of accumulation similar to those found here. The igneous nature of the so-called `sand' encountered in drilling was not recognized until a number of wells had been drilled; and it was not until recently. that the geological relations of the sill or laccolith, which gives rise to the accumulation of oil, were known and the so-called `anticline' was known to be, in part at least, the result of igneous intrusion. Geological surveys in this general region were made in 1900-1901 by W. H. Dalton and in 1907-1909 by P. C. A. Stewart, F. W. Moon, Leonard V. Dalton, and Dr. Max Muhlberg. More recent surveys have been made, however; under the direction of the author, by E. L. Ickes, B. C. Belt, B. Hartley, and Harve Loon-us. Notes of the earlier examinations were not available with the exception of the report by Dr. Muhlberg who apparently first recognized the true nature of the Furbero intrusion. Industrial minerals are becoming increasingly important in Colorado's mining industry, not only in production value but also in the variety available and in their potential development for both conventional and new uses. Fluorspar, building stone, fire clay, and pegmatite minerals have been historically important but are not now extensively mined. Aggregates (sand, gravel, and crushed stone), cement materials, metallurgical limestone, and common clays currently are the highest valued commodities. Those offering the greatest future potential include diamonds, nahcolite and dawsonite associated with oil shale, alunite, potash, zeolites, and rare earths.

Prior to use of this model siphon finisher, the only means of evaluating metallurgical performance of the siphon finisher was by pilot plant studies. These are costly and require large quantities of material. A model siphon finisher and a test procedure which permits the evaluation of siphon finisher metallurgical performance has been developed. Metallurgical results between the model siphon finisher and pilot plant or commercial units show fairly good correlation. The upgrading of magnetic taconite concentrates by hydraulic concentration has been practiced for several years. In the 1940's, Braund1 used a multistage upflow classifier to upgrade magnetized magnetic concentrates. In present taconite plants, the SiphonSizer, marketed by Dorr-Oliver, Inc., has been particularly suitable for upgrading magnetic concentrates. When the hydraulic SiphonSizer is used to upgrade the concentrates in the finishing portion of the overall flowscheme, the unit will be called a siphon finisher to distinguish this application from classification. Prior to this work the only means of evaluating the metallurgical performance of the siphon finisher was by pilot plant studies which are costly and require large quantities of material. Therefore, it was desirable to develop a model siphon finisher and a test procedure which would simulate siphon finisher performance and require only small samples of material. This model would permit the evaluation of small samples such as drill core samples and be useful in evaluation of commercial siphon finisher design and performance. THE SIPHON FINISHER The siphon finisher, as shown in Fig. 1, is a tank equipped with a system of water jets which distribute the hydraulic water uniformly across the bottom of the vessel with an energy release for agitation in the teeter bed. The feed to the siphon finisher is intre duced through a feed well in the center of the unit. The silica and middling particles overflow a peripheral weir into the overflow launder. The magnetite fraction is discharged by a siphon or a modulated discharge valve. PLATING iron with copper has received great attention from practical sand scientific men, but, aside from the deposit secured by immersion of iron in copper salts, by electro-plating, or by welding together thin sheets of iron and copper, these efforts have met with no success. Failure of these efforts, in the production of copper plating, has been due to the fact that the conditions normally and necessarily present in the plating operation are antagonistic to the production of copper-plated iron. In most, if not quite all of them, a bath of molten copper has been used. The-temperature of a molten copper bath is so high that the iron becomes oxidized before it can be immersed in the molten copper, and unless protective flux for the molten copper is used, the surface of the copper will become oxidized, and, in any event, the plated iron will oxidize immediately on its being withdrawn from the molten bath. I recently had the pleasure of visiting the works of The Metals Plating Co. at Elizabeth, N. J., where I witnessed the plating of iron sheets with copper by a new process.1 The plating metal is applied to the sheet in the form of a liquid mixture by means of rolls, such as inking rolls. The sheet, after being coated with the mixture, is automatically carried forward and deposited on a link-belt conveyor, which carries it through a furnace maintained at a. temperature well above that of molten copper. The basic principle involved in this method lies in the application of the plating metal to the sheet while the sheet is cold and then melting the metal in place on the sheet under conditions which are favorable to the formation of the plating.

The major oil discovery in 1938 for Wyoming was the General Petroleum Corporation's So. 1 Government, C.NW.SE. of sec. 21-35N-77W, on the Cole Creek structure in central Wyoming, 14 miles northeast of Casper. This well found commercial oil production in basal Cloverly sand (Lakota) at 7978 ft. and was completed on May 28, 1938, at 8019 ft., 3 ft. in Morrison shale. It had an initial produrtion of 10 bbl. of oil an hour but at the end of a 7-day test made 336 bbl. of oil in 24 hr. During 1938, the well produced a total of 23,161 bbl. of oil. It has been agitated about 10 days out of each month to provide fuel for lease and drilling operations, the balance of the time it has been shut in pending the completion of the second well on the structure. The Cole Creek oil is of intermediate base and has an A.P.I. gravity of 32.7". The record of the well contains the "tops" listed in the accompanying tabulation. THE part that acceleration plays in starting a belt conveyor and its effect on belt conveyor design are well understood in a general way. Its practical importance is easily overlooked, however, and under some conditions, it is absolutely necessary to give the problem of acceleration detailed study. Most handbooks on conveyor belting design adequately present basic data for the determination of acceleration values. This paper will only attempt to present practical thinking and a convenient method of treatment of acceleration in belt conveyor design. Mathematical Analysis In working out the various problems of conveyor belt acceleration, the starting point, as presented by the handbooks, is the familiar formula of "force of acceleration is equal to the mass times acceleration." By expressing these fundamental quantities in terms of belt conveyor design, it is possible to arrive at the unsuspected conclusion that the acceleration time for horizontal belt conveyors is independent of the load, and instead, dependent upon the belt speed, the type of drive arrangement and drive pulley, and the idler coefficient of friction. The mathematics leading to this conclusion are shown in Table I, which has been prepared to show, this derivation. While at first the conclusion just given may not seem to be reasonable, further reflection indicates that obviously the type of drive pulley and the type of drive do affect materially the tension in the conveyor belt, and thus, as clearly shown, the time of acceleration is dependent upon the factors mentioned. Inasmuch as all of the factors except time are predetermined by the belt conveyor design, it becomes relatively easy to establish the accelerating time and to reduce further this time determination to a simple graph from which the time in seconds can be read directly. Such a graph is given in Fig. 1. The table appearing on Fig. 1 should be explained further. For a given belt speed, the time of acceleration can be expressed as a percentage of the belt speed. The time of acceleration is also dependent on the drive arrangement, and changes in the drive arrangement consequently change the time of acceleration. It further follows that for a given belt speed, the time expressed as a percentage of that belt speed also changes with the type of drive. Obviously then, it becomes possible to graph the percentage of speed for each type of drive against the belt speed and accelerating time, after which, for a given belt speed and type of drive, the time can be read directly in seconds. Two constants were established for Fig. 1, the first one being the limiting of the maximum acceleration tension to 35 pct of the full load operating tension in the belt. The purpose of this is to limit the total tension imposed upon the belt during the acceleration period to 135 pct of the full load operating tension, which is the amount required to start or breakaway the fully loaded belt conveyor from rest. The other constant is the friction factor used for the idler equipment, which has been established as 0.022. For installations where it is necessary to establish the values of acceleration, invariably high grade idler equipment is used, and it has been established from. field experience that 0.022 for the idler friction factor is amply conservative. The use of this friction factor for idlers must be tempered with judgment, of course, for occasions will arise where more power than indicated is required to start, even with the very best of equipment, such as low temperature operations that tend to congeal the grease in the bearings and thus produce additional friction drag. An inspection of the table in Fig. I affords a convenient rule of thumb method for determining the acceleration time, which conveniently can be 5 pct of the belt speed in seconds. The 5 pct of belt speed figure is close to the average for most types of drives. In using Fig. 1 it must be emphasized that it applies accurately to horizontal belt conveyors only.

Recent experiments indicate that the usual type of concen-trating-table is not only poorly adapted to produce the desired results, but also is based upon an incorrect principle, namely, the use of riffles to perform the work of stratifying the various minerals. We have heard a good deal about riffles for concentratiug-tables; exhaustive experiments have been made to discover the proper form of riffle, or to prove the superiority of this or that form; disputes and patent-litigation have arisen over the matter of riffles, and thus marly have been led to believe that the riffle is the saving-device upon which the process of concentration depends. In the present paper it is proposed to show that the riffle is greatly overrated as to the part it performs in the concentration of minerals, and that, in the near future, it may possibly be eliminated entirely from that process. The experiments in question have shown that the troublesome riffle can be considered of secondary importance at the most, and should be so classed in the construction of a concen-trating-table built upon the right lines. The action of any form of riffle on a concentrating-table is such as to upset and retard the process of settling and stratifying the various minerals on the table-deck. From the deck of a riffled table no concentrates can be delivered until the deck is " bedded," that is, until a suffcient amount of metallic values has been fed to the table to spread over a large portion of the deck, forming a substratum of the heavier minerals. This substratum must be maintained by the feed within quite narrow limits, and directly proportional to the rate of discharge from the table, in order that the bed shall not be lost. On the other hand, the riffles having a very limited carrying-capacity, considerable care must be taken not to overfeed a riffled table, in which case the table proceeds, in mill parlance, to rob itself. Measurements of impact hardness of ß-brass are reported for a wide range of temperatures. Abrupt softening is observed when temperatures are raised above 425ºC, accompanied by abrupt widening of deformation bands in the deformed samples. Current theories of these effects, and of the lack of twinning, are discussed. HARDNESS1 and flow stress2 of a sample of ß-brass at room temperature depend upon the temperature from which the sample is quenched. It is believed that the state of order in the superlattice is responsible for this dependence—not the order within individual domains, which reaches near-perfection during the quench from any temperature, but the size of the domains which is presumed to be a minimum in the hardest samples, those quenched from temperatures near the critical disordering temperature of 468°C. Measurements of impact hardness made over a range of temperatures and microstructural studies of samples deformed both rapidly and slowly over a range of temperatures, reported herein, should be of aid in reaching a more complete understanding of the underlying factors controlling the properties of the disordered body-centered-cubic material and the ordered material. Modern developments in alloy steels have been so rapid and diverse that engineering practice has scarcely had time to re-appraise all items of past experience wherein conclusions became axiomatic under conditions that no longer apply. A case in point is the wet screening of abrasive ores within the fine range still looked upon as belonging exclusively to classifiers. By virtue of the development of stainless steels (18 per cent Cr, 8 per cent Ni), it is no longer true that classifiers are more economical than screens in closed circuit with large-tonnage ball or rod mills at 65 or even 100 mesh, provided a selective overgrind of the higher-gravity constituents of the ore is not desired. Wet screening of ores is a highly corrosive as well as an abrasive operation, because of the inevitably high degree of oxygenation of the water. Screen cloth of ordinary or spring-steel wire almost at once becomes pitted and covered with a film of corrosion products, which causes rust-blinding of fine-mesh screens and offers high frictional impedance to the flow of ore particles. On the other hand, the well-known properties of stainless steel enable it to maintain a bright surface, and so to eliminate blinding either by ore particles or by corrosion products. That a large-tonnage mill grinding hard ore to 65 mesh can be operated economically in closed circuit with screens instead of classifiers has recently been demonstrated at the Copper Cliff concentrator of the International Nickel Co.; in the test to be described, a 6½ by 12½-ft. Marcy rod mill ground from 625 to 820 tons of ore per day to approximately 65 mesh, operating in closed circuit with three 4 by 5-ft. Hum-mer screens, without any classifier. Stainless-steel cloth gave an indicated life of several months. There was no difficulty with blinding, yet dilution and spray water could be controlled so that screen undersize averaged not less than 40 per cent solids. In contrast, ordinary carbon steel was pitted and blind with rust within 40 hours.
