Silica fiber 11arkevs and hardness irzdentatiozs have been used to study the thermal diffusion of racancies in zinc placed in temperature gradients of 460o and 706oK per Cm All markers mored toward the higher temperatures, and the data show that the heat of trarlsport Q is greater than the eizthalpy of z,acancj3 forrjalion E by an amount equal to 3.5 kcal per mole. These results ore not in agreement with those obtained in either of the two previous studies with zinc. The problem is discussed in terms of experimental differences and racancy source and sink efficiencies. THE general interest in thermal-diffusion phenomena over the past several years has prompted a number of marker movement studies using pure metals. In order to understand better the relationships between thermal and mass flow, a general goal of the experiments has been to obtain values for the net enthalpies carried by the diffusing atoms. For self-diffusion by means of the vacancy mechanism, the determination of relative marker positions before and after an anneal in a temperature gradient permits a calculation of a value for (Q - Ef). Q is the transferred enthalpy, and Ef is the enthalpy of vacancy formation in the metal being investigated. The initial experimental study of thermal diffusion in pure metals was accomplished by Shewmon who found essentially no movement of surface-hardness indentation markers in single and bicrystals of zinc held for 20 days in a temperature gradient of 310°C per

The growth temperature of dendrite tips has been measured in a binary alloy system, Al-Cu, as a function of rate of formation of solid phase. Metallographic examination has rerealed the dendritic structure dereloped during different stages of the freezing process and factors influencing the undercooling, such as solute buildup, surface tension, and kinetic effects, have been estimated. Practical implications of the results are discussed. THE development of a dendritic growth pattern during the solidification of metals and alloys has an influence at least equal to that of grain size on the properties of the casting or ingot being produced. and consequently much interest has been devoted to the study of this phenomenon. A review of the knowledge gathered up to 1964 has been given by Chalmers.' Among recent publications in the area the works of Jackson et al 2 and Flemings and his coworkers3,4 are of special interest. This work is an experimental study of the factors which influence the development of a dendritic pattern during the solidification of a typical binary alloy system, A1-Cu, when there is no heat source in the liquid. This means that the temperature and the temperature gradient are controlled by the heat extraction from and latent heat evolved by the growing crystals. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Samples were prepared from a master alloy made up of aluminum, 99.995 pct, and copper. 99.99 pct, of the concentrations given below and of sufficient size to fill cylindrical graphite molds of 35 mm ID and 35 mm height. Bottom. wall. and lid of the graphite molds were all of 6 mm thickness, Fig. 1. Thin ceramic thermocouple shields could be introduced at different positions in the sample through holes in the lid. The assembly was heated in a small vertical resistance furnace to a suitable temperature. 700° to 720°C. which is well above the melting point of the sample. It was thereafter taken out of the furnace and chilled at selected rates, and the temperature changes in the sample were recorded. For high sensitivity in the temperature recordings, a reference thermocouple was held in a solidifying pure aluminum melt. which was very well insulated and therefore was at a constant temperature. 660°C, for nearly half an hour. The thermocouples were connected so that the difference voltage was fed into the recorder of which the most sensitive range was 1 mV. Temperature variations could be read to within 0.l°C. The thermocouples used were of the Chromel-Alumel type (28- or 38-gage wires) and the recorder a two-pen Moseley strip chart recorder. The different rates of chilling were obtained in the following way. a) The graphite crucible was wrapped in one or two layers of an insulating. feltlike material (Fiberfrax paper from the Carborundum Co.). The drop in temperature per unit time after complete solidification could thereby be varied from 8" to 18°C per min. This corresponds to a rate of heat extraction in the given samples from 0.08 to 0.17 cal cm-' sec-I. 6) The bare graphite mold was placed free on a piece of firebrick. The measured temperature drop was around 50°C per min (-0.5 cal cm-" ' sec- I). c) By blowing compressed air through a tube with many holes surrounding the mold in a ring shape. the rate of heat transfer could be raised to 150' to 200°C per min (-1.7 cal cm-3 sec- I). d) Cooling rates around 1000 C per mill (-9.4 cal cm-3 sec-l) were obtained by substituting the air in the device used in c by water. The range of cooling rates used in these experiments correspond to technical casting processes from slow solidification as obtained in sand molds to very rapid freezing which occurs in some continuous casting and welding processes. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The A1-Cu system was chosen for the experiments: the relevant part of the phase diagram is reproduced in Fig. 2. Observation of the Center Temperature. When a thermocouple is inserted in the center of the melt. the type of cooling curves obtained at slow solidification rates differs little from numerous published curves from similar systems. and the solidification pattern

Heats of high purity iron containing 3.1 pct Si and be -tween 0.0003 and 0.0295 pct N were prepared by vacuum melting ad then pouring while in a nitrogen atmosphere with the pressure between 0 and 90 psi. Strip from a heat with 0.0184 pct N underwent complete secondary recrystallization during the final anneal. Heats with less nitrogen had too few Si3N4 particles to restrain normal grain growth, and the heat with higher nitrogen had too many particles to allow complete secondary recrystallization. In the hot-rolled structure, Si3N4 precipitates only at the grain boundaries, with the consequence that annealing after hot-rolling diminishes the ability to subsequently undergo secondary recrystallization. In contrast to this behavior, ALNprecipitates uniformly in the hot-rolled structure. Under 1 atm of nitrogen, Si3N, in 3.1 pct Si-Fe dissociates between 900" and 950°C; the solubility of nitrogen increases from 0.0010 pct at 900" to 0.0030 pct at 1200°C. The solubility of nitrogen in Si-Fe has been the subject of many investigations. Corney and Turkdogan1 heated a 2.83 pct Si alloy in nitrogen and found the solubility, under 1 atrn of nitrogen, to be 0.0019 pct at 900°C. They claimed that Si3N4 did not form in the alloy above 705°C in 1 atrn of nitrogen. Fryxell et al.2 heated samples of 3.25 pct Si-Fe containing 0.0025 pct N over a range of temperatures and then analyzed for total nitrogen by vacuum fusion and for nitrogen in solution by a modified Kjeldahl technique. At 900°C, they reported the solubility of nitrogen in equilibrium with Si3N4 to be 0.0011 pct. pearce9 found the solubility of nitrogen at 900°C under 0.95 atrn of nitrogen to be 0.0017 pct in a 3.06 pct Si alloy. He reported that Si3N4 does not form above 770°C in 1 atrn of nitrogen. Although internal friction measurements have given somewhat higher values for the solubility,4-6 if the solubility of nitrogen is as low as has been reported by most investigators, and if Si3N4 is stable up to at least 945°C at 1 atrn pressure of nitrogen as reported by Seybolt,7 a small amount of nitrogen in properly processed Si-Fe should be effective in promoting secondary recrystallization. The requirement is that in the final heat treatment there be enough small, well-dispersed particles of Si3N4 to restrain normal grain growth. Fast8 has obtained secondary recrystallization by nitriding high-purity 3 pct Si-Fe after hot-rolling to a thickness of 0.118 in., followed by processing to 0.012 in., and annealing. A large amount of nitrogen, 0.076 pct. was introduced during the nitriding heat treatment, but he has since reported9 that "a few hundredths of a percent" is sufficient. Small amounts of aluminum10 or vanadium" nitride are capable of promoting secondary recrystallization. Heats containing as little as 0.010 pct A1 or 0.042 pct V and from 0.006 to 0.009 pct N underwent complete secondary recrystallization at final gage, whereas heats with lesser amounts of aluminum or vanadium did not.l2 To be reported is the behavior of nitrogen in high-purity 3.1 pct Si-Fe, and the relation of this behavior to the ability to undergo secondary recrystallization. PROCEDURE Ingots weighing 1 lb were made by vacuum melting high-purity electrolytic iron (A104, Glidden Co.) and high-purity silicon (Monsanto Co.). The latter was used in preference to ferrosilicon to insure a low aluminum content. The design of the melting furnace permitted pouring with the furnace atmosphere either below or above atmospheric pressure. Accordingly, at the completion of melting, nitrogen was admitted to the desired pressure and the heat then immediately poured. The ingots were sound, with no indication of porosity. In Table I are listed the heats investigated, the nitrogen pressure at pour, and the nitrogen and oxygen contents as determined by vacuum fusion with a platinum bath at 1850°C, a procedure which insures measurement of the total nitrogen.13 In addition, all heats contained 3.1 pct Si and not more than 0.002 pct C, 0.003 pct S or 0.005 pct Al. It was subsequently found that the quantity of nitrogen contained in the heats in Table I does not necessarily represent that obtained under equilibrium conditions. For example, the ingot poured immediately after 1 atrn of nitrogen was admitted to the chamber contained 0.0093 pct N, whereas an ingot poured 3 min after the nitrogen was admitted contained 0.021 pct N and another poured after a 6-min delay contained 0.029 pct N. While some bleeding of the hot top occurred in the latter instance, the ingot when examined in cross section appeared sound. The ingots were heated to 1325°C in hydrogen and rapidly rolled to 0.080 in. in 3 passes. The roll speed of the final pass was reduced so as to increase the quenching effect of the rolls. The hot-rolled pieces were processed both as-hot-rolled and after heating for 3 min at 900°C in hydrogen. After cold-rolling to 0.026 in., the strips were heated for 2 min at 900°C in hydrogen, then cold-rolled to the final gage of 0.012 in. OTHERS here are far better qualified than I to discuss some of the specific proposals for government regulation of the oil industry. I shall make no attempt to carry oil to Oklahoma. The question of public control, however, is inherent in other branches of the mineral industry in varying degrees, and my comments will be directed mainly toward some of the trends affecting the mineral industry as a whole, as a background for your more specific consideration of oil legislation. A proud American tradition has been the insistence on freedom of competition, on equality of economic opportunity, on a policy of laissez faire. Nowhere has this principle been given wider application than in the mineral industry. The mineral field has been open to all comers, and the job of mineral exploitation has naturally attracted daring and independent spirits. The laws governing conditions of discovery and development, as well as the anti- trust laws, have been devised to foster the spirit of private initiative. The result has been the building of a mineral industry on a scale never before approximated anywhere in the world. The impetus thus gained, the methods, the technique, the financial resources, have been projected be- yond our boundaries and have made the American mineral industry the purveyor to the world for many essential commodities and first in the exploitation of the world's minerals. Our habits of individual self-reliance and success are deeply ingrained, and there is hardly an individual in the entire mineral field who does not instinctively recoil fro111 the extension of collective control, whether public or private.

Ashbel Welch, Lambertville, N. J.: Dr. Dudley has given the wear of steel rails under four different conditions. He arrives at the conclusion that the softer rails, or those that from their composition ought to be softer, wear better than the harder. But there is another condition which has an important bearing on the subject, and should not be overlooked,—the weight on a wheel. With the lighter weights of the past, the softer rails may have worn best; with the heavier weights of the future, the harder may wear best. Weights will probably be increased up to the capacity of steel to bear; then doubtless the harder steel will wear best. A leaden rail with ten pounds on a wheel might carry millions of tons, but with one hundred pounds on a wheel, it would be destfoyed by a few thousand tons. So in the days of iron rails, my experience was that the softer rails under light machinery stood better than some of the harder; but under heavy machinery the softer were much the most rapidly destroyed. PuRe silver and silver-lead alloys have been studied as to their suitability for bearing~.' A review of the properties of thallium and the silver-thallium constitutional diagram was made by the author to analyze the possibilities of silver-thallium compositions for antifriction materia1s. t The silver-rich end of the diagram as reported in the literatureg-" was found to be sketchy and it was necessary to carry out corisiderable experimental work to arrive at definite conclusions. Some of the results of this work are reported in this paper. Test Materials In the beginning of the work, only fused alloys were investigated. In preparing the fused alloyst care was taken to exhaust the toxic fumes caused by the thaillium content. The compositions of the series of fused alloys are listed in Table I. The silver-thallium alloys were melted in clay-graphite crucibles and cast into preheated steel molds of 3/4-in, diameter. In the cast condition, they showed a cored structure, as indicated by the micrographs of Figs. I to 3. The etching reagent used was a mixture of 2 grams K2Cr207, 8 C.C. H2S04, and IOO C.C. H20. The cored structure is unsatisfactory for the type of corrosion resistance required for bearing applications, and homogenizing experiments were carried out at various temperatures, the results of which are shown in Figs. 4 through 8. The alloys with a lower thallium concentration, which were heated for 2 hr. at 525°C show an almost completely homogenized solid solution type of structure. With higher thallium concentration, the homogenizing temperature was dropped to 475OC. to eliminate the formation of a liquid phase. It is evident that heating for 2 hr. at this temperature did not iesiilt iii complete elimination of the cored structure. As would be expected, cold-working of the cast structure is an expedient in establishing equilibrium conditions. The fine homogeneous grain structure shown in Fig. 7 corresponds to the cold-worked area under the Rockwell ball penetration when the hardness was taken before heat-treatment. A detailed structural study was made on a cast silver-thallium alloy containing 3.67 per cent thallium. Three micrographs (Figs. 9, 10 and 11) show the transition

Pyne gives clear evidence of the difficulties the metallurgist is likely to encounter when he tries to recover in the blast furnace the metal from old chromite lining used as a refractory material in the copper reverberatory furnace. It appears that chromite cannot be fluxed at temperatures which usually prevail in copper blast furnaces. This calls to mind the freezing-point curve drawn by M. Simonis1 of mixtures of chromite and kaolinite. The chromite used in the experiments contained 52.9 per cent. Cr203, 22.6 FeO, 4.8 AI203, 9.6 Si02, .10.1-MgO; FIG. 1. the kaolinite was clay from Zettlitz with 98.5 per cent. clay-substance: The accompanying curve shows that the eutectic mixture with 35 per cent. kaolinite and 65 per cent. chromite freezes at Seger cone No. 15 (1435° C.), while kaolinite fuses at cone No. 35 (1770° C.) and chromite at cone No. 42 (2000° C.). The curve indicates that the difficulty in the blast furnace can be overcome by having at the smelting zone a temperature much higher than is usual in copper smelting; a charge composition similar to that prevailing at the Mansfeld copper smeltery -which gives with 23 per cent. coke a, slag of the composition Si02, .49.09; .(FeMg)0, 5.58; (CaMg)0, 16.02; A1203,-16.02-might flux and fuse chromite.

(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) THROUGH the courtesy of Dr. James Douglas I am permitted to give, a summary of some of the results obtained in leaching slimes tailings in a series of experiments conducted under my direction at Douglas, Ariz.. during the past year. While the test run for which the data are given deals with a particular case, much of the work is general in its application and may therefore be of interest. This work was done upon the ores of the Burro Mountain Copper Co. A description of the geology of the district will be-found in the paper by R. E. Somers published in the May, 1915, Bulletin of the Institute. The mineral is pyrite and chalcocite very finely disseminated throughout the gangue and a characteristic of all the ores is the large amount of alumina present. A representative analysis of the particular ore under consideration would be about as follows: Cu, per cent 2.35 S, percent 3.0 Ag, ounces per ton 0.05 CaO, per cent 0.5 Au None K202, per cent 4.0 Fe, per cent 1.5 SiO2, per cent 70.0 A120,, per cent 13.0 The leaching of the ore direct was early dismissed from consideration for the following reasons: 1. The ore would have to be quite finely crushed to liberate the mineral for leaching; concentrating after crushing would cost but a few cents a ton; and a higher total recovery would result from leaching tailings rather than ore. 2. Rough concentration would yield a suitable material for roasting to make sulphur dioxide or sulphuric acid in connection with the leaching scheme. 3. Such a program put the question of cost vs. recovery on a basis where flotation and discarding of tailings were directly comparable.

It is well known that the superconducting critical current densities of many alloy superconductors may be increased by cold working and in some cases further enhanced by a short heat treatment. This latter enhancement has been attributed to the redistribution of dislocations into cell-like networks' and to the precipitation of second phase particles,2'3 which act as flux pinning centers. In a manner analogous to dislocation pinning in precipitation hardening alloys,4 it is expected that here also a critical distribution of the pinning centers should result in maximum pinning effect. Concentration inhomogeneities exist in most or all commercial alloys yet there have been only a few attempts made to determine their effect on critical current capacity in the absence of cold working. Sutton and Baker,5 and Kramer and Rhodes6 have found that the complex precipitation processes occurring during the aging of Ti-Nb alloys can result in critical current density enhancement. Livingston7-10 has clearly shown, for lead and indium based alloys, that the distribution of precipitated second phase particles is of critical importance in determining magnetization characteristics. However, these '(soft" alloys age at room temperature and the time involved in specimen preparation prevents metallographic examination in the state in which the superconducting measurements are made. Thus results with such alloys are expected to be biased towards larger precipitates and interpar-ticle spacing. The present study of Ta-Zr alloys was undertaken to examine the influence of second phase precipitation, as controlled by heat treatment, on the critical current capacity of well annealed polycrystalline material. A study of the published phase diagram11 indicated that annealing supersaturated samples containing up to 9 at. pct Zr at suitable temperatures would result in the precipitation of a zirconium-rich second phase. It was MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE The alloys were prepared from spectrochemically pure tantalum and zirconium. Analysis was carried out by the supplier. Major impurities in the tantalum were: 12 pprn of 02, 17 pprn of N2, 19 pprn of C, and less than 10 ppm each of Mo, Nb, Al, Cr, Ni, Si, Ti. The crystal bar zirconium was pure except for the following concentrations: 15 pprn of 02, 17 ppm of C, 23 ppm of Fe, 11 ppm of Cu, and less than 10 pprn each of Al, Ca, N2, Ti, and Sn. Samples were prepared in the form of 8 to 10 g but-tons by arc melting using a nonconsumable electrode on a water-cooled copper hearth in a high purity ar-gon atmosphere. Each button was inverted and re-melted three times to ensure an even distribution of the component elements. The samples were then homogenized at temperatures close to their melting points for 3 days in a vacuum furnace maintained at 5 x 10-7 mm Hg. After this treatment the buttons were cold rolled to sheets approximately 0.020 in. thick from which specimens were cut, 0.040 in, wide and 1 in. long suitable for critical current density (J,) and critical temperature (T,) measurements. These strips were then recrystallized and further grain growth was allowed by an additional vacuum heat treatment at 1800°C for 60 hr. Some second phase precipitation occurred during cooling of the furnace and a solution treatment was necessary to produce single phase supersaturated samples. This treatment was successfully carried out by sealing the samples together with some zirconium chips in quartz tubes under a vacuum of 5 x 10-7 mm Hg, heating at 1000°C for 5 hr and then quenching into water or liquid nitrogen. The samples were then heat treated at either 350" or 550°C and quenched into water or liquid nitrogen. All samples which were heat treated at 350°C were quenched in both cases by cracking the capsules in liquid nitrogen. The samples treated at 550°C were quenched by dropping the capsules into water. Analysis for oxygen in randomly selected samples indicated that the oxygen content was in the range of 175 to 225 ppm. Values of Tc were determined by employing a self-inductance technique. Jc measurements were made at 4.2oK by increasing the direct current through the wire in a perpendicularly applied field until a voltage of 1 pv was detected with a null meter. The risk of resistive heating at the soldered joints during these latter measurements was reduced by first plating the ends of the wires with indium and then soldering to the copper current leads using tin. Metallographic examinations were performed after mechanical polishing of the same samples and etching in a 4H20:3HN03 (conc):lHF(conc) solution.

The superplastic behavior of low carbon and manganese bearing steels has been evaluated. The results of elevated-temperature stress-strain rate and elongation tests are reported which indicate that high strain rate sensitivity (>0.5) and adequate elongations are achievable in ultrafine-grained steels 1 to 2 p, but at strain rates which are not commercially attractive. It has been demonstrated that the fine grain size is retained after long times and high strains if the temperature is kept within the range of the two-phase (a + ?) field. INTEREST in superplasticity has been stimulated by the desire to: 1) understand the origin of, and mechanisms responsible for, the large uniform elongations observed, and 2) exploit this property for commercial advantage in metal forming operations. Although the Zn-22 wt pct Al alloy presently being studied as a model material1-5 may find application in sheet forming and extrusion, the potential of super-plasticity should best be realized in large tonnage materials, such as steel and aluminum alloys. The degree of superplasticity in low-carbon and manganese-bearing steels has been evaluated. The results of elevated-temperature stress-strain rate and elongation tests on ultrafine grain size material are reported. Avery and Backofen6 and Hart7 have shown that geometrically stable flow leading to extensive uniform elongation in the tension test is associated with high values of the strain rate sensitivity, m, defined: Lozinsky had reported that titanium and zirconium experience permanent deformation if subjected to a constant load and cyclic heating through the temperature range of the phase transformation. Although strain rate sensitivities in excess of about 0.2 had not been reported previously for steel, permanent deformation had been observed11-13 in a wide variety of steels subjected to a constant load and cyclic heating through the temperature range of the a-? phase transformation. Thus by analogy, steel could be expected to exhibit high strain rate sensitivity but only in the a + ? condition. High strain rate sensitivity has been observed at 650°C (a + Fe3C), but not reported as such, by Bailey, Dickenson, and pearson14 in 1931 at a strain rate of about 10-9 per min. It then remained to determine whether high tensile elongations would be observed in a rate-controlled test at constant temperature and at what strain rate strain rate sensitivity values greater than 0.5 would be observed. Since previous experience8 had indicated the importance of fine grain size to realizing high m at reasonable strain rates, it was first necessary to produce an ultrafine grain size and then keep the grains from growing during the test. The results of this investigation show that fine grain size can be readily produced16 and maintained by restricting the temperature of testing to below the ? transus. Further, superplasticity (high m and large uniform elongation) is observed. However, the strain rate range is only marginally useful for commercial forming operations with the finest grain size produced. MATERIAL The material investigated initially was a 1.9 wt pct Mn, 0.42 wt pct C, hot-rolled bar previously used by Low and Turka1015 and available in the laboratory. The 0.500-in. round was cold-rolled to a 0.090-in. flat, annealed for 4 hr at 850°C in argon, air-cooled, and cold-finished to 0.050 in. Subsequently, four additional steels of the compositions given in Table I were investigated to explore the effects of manganese, carbon, and test temperature on the observed stress-strain rate behavior. These steels were melted under argon, cast to 0.75 by 2 by 5 in. slabs, hot-rolled at 850°C, surface-finished to 0.13 in., and cold-finished to 0.050 in. Sheet tensile specimens 0.200 in. x thickness with 1- or 2-in. gage length were cut parallel to the rolling direction. Table I also includes the nominal transformation temperatures for the AISI 1340 and the four experimental steels. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Production of Fine Grain Size. PRESIDENT AND GENTLEMEN : It has been made my pleasant duty to welcome you to the city of Philadelphia, but in so doing I shrink, with some natural reluctance, from appearing before an audience so much better fitted than I am to cope with the subjects which are usually presented to your association, and I can assure you that no trembling neophyte, first venturing within the groves of the Academy, or walking, with sacred reverence, in the gardens of Plato, felt more natural dread at the consequence of his own temerity than I do in appearing before an audience composed of gentlemen belonging to a scientific society of which I am but too sensible that until now I have been a member only in name. During the course of an in~*estigation into the occurrence of ordered AB3 structures, the following new phases have been found —CrRh3 (AuCu3 type), CrCo3 (MgCd3 type), HfCo4 (Ths Mn23 type), and WPt, MoPh type). The composition of the TiPt3-x phase (TiNi, type) is close to Ti23Pl77. The alloy chenzistry of transition rnetal AB3 structures is rezliewed in the light of electron concentration correlations of hex-agonality recently obtained for quasi-binary alloys. The relatizte colurne contraction in the AB3 structures increases with increasing difference in volume of the conzponents. A family of ordered close-packed layered structures is formed by stacking identical layers of composition AB, in various sequences, such that the coordination is twelvefold throughout and there are no A-A contacts. Previous work' on quasi-binary AB3 alloys has led to the conclusion that the stacking sequence of the AB, structures changes with increasing radius ratio RA/RB from a purely cubic, through different mixtures of hexagonal and cubic stacking to a purely hexagonal stacking. However. for binary AB3 alloys, a correlation between the type of the crystal structure and the position of the components in the various volumns of the periodic table has been noted.2-5 It has been noted6 that this correlation appears to hold even though the radius ratio RA/RB may vary over a considerable range with the location of the components in the three long periods. Another study7" of several quasi-binary systems led to the conclusion that an increase in hexagonality of the stacking is associated with increase in the electron concentration e/a. as defined by the average per atom of the total number of electrons outside the inert gas shells. In apparent conflict with this conclusion, it is known that seven binary alloy structures isotypic with TiNi3 which is 50 pct hexagonal occur at a higher electron concentration (e/n = 8.5) than that (e/a = 8.25) for the 100 pct hexagonal MgCd3 type structure present in seven binary AB3 alloys. Table 111. In the present work, an investigation into the occurrence of binary AB3 structures in transition metal alloys was made, and a survey of binary AB3 structures is presented. EXPERIMENTAL The starting materials were pure metals of 99.9 wt pct purity. The alloys were arc-melted under partial pressure of argon and annealed in sealed silica capsules lined with molybdenum foil under argon at- mosphere. The total weight loss upon melting and subsequent annealing was always less than 1 pct and hence the alloys will be referred to by their intended (unanalyzed) compositions. Wherever the constitution permitted. the alloys were given a homogenizing treatment at 1200°C (3 days) prior to annealing. Unless otherwise stated all alloys were annealed at 900°C for 1 week and water-quenched. Sometimes the final annealing treatment was carried out on powders to accelerate the attainment of equilibrium. X-ray powder patterns were taken using a Guinier-de Wolff focusing camera (CuK, radiation) or an asymmetrical focusing camera (Co or CrK, radiation). For lattice parameter determination. internal silicon standards were employed. The intensity calculations were made using a Fortran IV program written by Jeitschko and parthe.9 RESULTS Twenty AB3 and three AB4 alloys were investigated. Table I lists the crystallographic data on some of the intermediate phases encountered in the present work. Table II contains the X-ray data for HfCo, (Th,,Mn,, type). The positional parameter, x. was assumed to be 0.378. the value for Th6Mnn2310 The X-ray pattern of ZrCo, was very similar to that of HfCo, and the previous structure determination of ZrCo, by Kuzma el al." was confirmed. Ordering in the alloy CrCo could be ascertained by the presence of only one weak super lattice line (101). the others being too weak presumably owing to the small difference in the scattering powers of chromium and cobalt. This line was observed in the X-ray pattern of powder from the massive sample annealed at 830°C (7 days) after the powder had been reannealed at 600°C (24 hr). The diffraction pattern of the powder similarly reannealed at 830°C (24 hr) contained only the lines due to a mixture of hcp and fcc Co(Crj solid solutions. Therefore, it appears reasonable to assume that O2 and/or N2 contamination which would be less likely to occur during the 600°C anneal was not responsible for the observed weak reflection. Also. this reflection cannot be identified with any of the strong lines of the neighboring s phase which is present in the Co-Cr system at higher chromium contents. The composition corresponding to the TiNi3 structure observed by Raman et al.12 in the two-phase alloy Ti,zt,, has been established in the present work as being between There was satisfactory agreement for the low-angle lines (up to d = 1.997A) between the observed diffraction pattern of TiCua and that calculated assuming the ZrAu, structure. as recently proposed by Pfeifer-et a1.I3 However. some of the superlattice lines. e.g., at d = 1.937 and 1.919A. predicted by the ZrAu, structure were not actually observed eve? though neighboring lines. at d = 1.947 and 1.986A. of comparable calculated intensity were present.
