Application Of electric logs has been used in correlation of subsurface structure to determine the size and shape of the oil reservoir. Such a knowledge is hardly complete until saturation and productivity are determined for the various horizons. It is difficult to use electric logs successfully for this purpose because of the many factors that influence the curves. In this work an effort was made to establish an empirical correlation between formation resistivity for a series of electric-log curves and water saturation and oil productivity of sand. Electric logs were obtained by recording with 10 different electrode spacings through the same interval of a well. In the analysis of these curves all factors except two, a dependent and independent variable, were held constant. The interval studied had been cored and a large number of samples were analyzed in the core laboratory in order to compare the values of permeability and saturation with the measured values of formation resistivity. Results of this analysis indicate: (I) the depth to which mud filtrate enters a sand body, (2) a correlation between permeability and sand resistivity for shallow penetration depths, and (3) that the water saturation for an oil sand can be determined from the measured sand resistivity after making suitable corrections for sand thickness. The procedure in the last method depends on a correction for thickness factor and a theoretical curve. Removal of bit cuttings is an important function of drilling muds. In an effort to obtain better understanding of the factors influencing the removal of cuttings, an extensive series of laboratory tests were made in which slip velocities of various sizes and shapes of particles were measured in muds of different physical properties. Empirical equations were then derived from these experimental data. These equations show that slip velocity is dependent on cutting size and shape, mud flow constants, and flow state of the mud. Applicability of these equations for field use is demonstrated by comparing computed slip velocities with slip velocities obtained from field tests. Drilling muds have many functions, but perhaps the most important is the removal of bit cuttings from the well. In a 10,000-ft well, the weight of rock which is drilled and must be carried to the surface is over 150 tons. In addition to this, the mud must remove any sloughings from the well bore. Failure of the mud to promptly remove either bit cuttings or sloughs from the well bore causes re-drilling and excessive wear on bit teeth, slows down drilling rate thereby increasing well costs, and greatly increases possibilities for stuck drill pipe when circulation is stopped for any length of time. Drilling muds lift bit cuttings to the surface by means of the upward velocity of the drilling mud in the annulus. Because a density difference exists between the rock being drilled and the drilling mud, there is a difference between mud velocity and the rate of bit cutting travel, called the net rise velocity. To evaluate the ability of any type of drilling mud in respect to lifting cuttings, some method must be known for predicting the rate of fall of cuttings through mud traveling upwards in the annulus. Equations for the rate of fall of particles through a true fluid have been satisfactorily determined by several authors. 1-6 Since drilling muds are not true fluids, but obey the laws of Bing-ham,7 it should not be expected that equations for rate of fall of cuttings in a true fluid would be applicable to plastic fluids such as drilling muds. Several authors have attempted to compute cutting slip velocities in muds using a viscosity value obtained with a Stormer viscosimeter; however, unsatisfactory results were obtained. Pigott8 took cognizance of the phenomenon of variation of viscosity with velocity in laminar Row, and calculated laminar slip velocities using a variable viscosity with Stokes law, and turbulent slip velocities using Rittingers law. Petrographic studies of coal have resulted in a better understanding of the origin and composition of coal and have added to the knowledge of how and why coals differ in their response to various prepamtion and utilization processes. Petrographic methods can now be used in scientific economic exploitation of coals. Because the United States Steel Corp. is one of the largest consumers of coal and coke, there is a continuing interest in the corporation in perfecting a better understanding of coal so that it can be utilized more effectively. Coal is a heterogeneous substance composed principally of plant material that has been altered by a complex geochemical process to form rock. The science of coal is anthracology. The ultimate aim of anthracology is determining the relationships and differences among coals. The fundamental aim is finding out why coals differ. The practical application is determining how the differences in coals affect their utilization properties. Coal, like other sedimentary rocks, consists of more than one material. Fig. 1, a photograph of a natural fracture and a polished surface of a lump of coal, displays heterogeneity in terms of the banded ingredients present. The earliest attempts to describe coal were based on its hardness and appearance. ' Thus, coal has been described as hard or soft, bright or dull, and banded or nonbanded. The variations in the hardness and physical appearance of the coal reflect differences in materials that constitute the coal. The banded nature, lustre, and texture depend upon the relative proportions of the various constituent materials. Even the earliest petrographic investigations of coal produced evidence of of the heterogeneity of the coal substance and shoul have destroyed the concept of the unit coal molecule. Coals (Fig. 2) that appear the same frequently consist of different microscopic materials and may behave differently during mining, pulverization, washing, or coking. In Fig. 3, the upper photograph shows a bright at-trital medium-volatile coal, and the micrograph at the right shows some of the materials that constitute the coal. The lower photograph shows a bright attrital low-volatile coal and the corresponding micrograph shows material of similar origin to those from the medium-volatile coal. Any petrographic description of a coal that has meaning in terms of its utilization begins with a microscopic examination. Numerous attempts have been made to describe coal on the basis of the materials that constitute the coal.2*3 Initial petrographic studies were directed towards the question of the origin of coals without any true basis for studying the metamorphic changes in the

Raw bituminous coal has been in general use as a blast-furnace fuel in Scotland for the last century, and although its use has now been largely abandoned and it has been replaced by coke in the majority of the few furnaces which are at present in blast in this country, coal-smelted pig iron is not yet a thing of the past; it is still being produced and marketed in competition with the more cheaply smelted product of the coke-fired furnace. Various factors have influenced this change in practice; the once plentiful deposits of coal of a suitable nature for the blast furnace are now not so easily obtainable; native blackband and clayband ironstones which are easily smelted in the coal-fired blast furnace, although still far from being exhausted, are not available except at a cost that is somewhat higher than that of imported ores, making them unattractive to the ironmaster that is compelled by circumstances to smelt his iron at the lowest possible cost. Within the last 15 years overproduction of synthetic nitrogen has led to progressive reductions in the price of sulphate of ammonia, the recovery of which together with the other by-products before that time materially assisted in reducing the working costs of the coal-fired furnace. Now the sale of the by-products recovered yields a diminished profit. When the cost of the product is the only consideration the small, s1ow-smelting, coal-fired blast furnace cannot compare with its large, modern, coke-fired competitor. Other considerations do not by any means all support the same side of the argument. In the smelting of pig iron to be used in the manufacture of steel where the quality of the final product depends so largely upon the control of the conversion process and so much less upon the physical quality of the pig iron used, the physical properties of the pig iron do not exert any appreciable influence upon the quality of the steel produced, therefore the methods employed in the smelting of the pig iron matter but little so long as the requisite chemical composition is reached. Mining by hydraulic process of the important gold-bearing gravels of the Sacramento Valley in the basins of the Yuba, Bear and American rivers began in 1853, and continued at an ever-increasing rate for 30 years. In its most active days it reached an annual production of $15,000,000, and averaged $10,000,000 per year over the 30 years. During that period no provisions were made to prevent the debris from being discharged into the water courses, and ultimately large quantities of silt, sand and gravel were washed down to the lower valleys; filling channels, causing overflow of agricultural lands and difficulty in maintaining navigable depths in the Sacramento River. Agitation and suits filed because of these damages finally resulted in the injunction decision of Judge L. B. Sawyer,' in the U.S. Circuit Court, Jan. 23, 1884, which closed down practically all hydraulic mining operations not having means to restrain their debris. In 1893 (approved March 1, 1893), Congress passed the act introduced by Representative Anthony Caminetti, of California, creating the California Debris Commission, composed of three officers assigned from the Engineer Corps of the U.S. Army, and since that time it has been legal and possible within the drainage systems of Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers to conduct hydraulic mining of gold-bearing gravels behind dams built under this commission's permit and supervision. In the watersheds of the Trinity and Klamath rivers, which flow directly to the Pacific Ocean and do not affect navigation or agriculture, operating permits from the California Debris Commission are not required. There is a measure of restriction there, however, through what is known as the Trinity and Klamath River Fish and Game District. Chap. 215, Stat. 1931, in order to secure relatively clear water for the fishing season, provides that between July 15 and October 15 each year there must not be discharged into these rivers debris that will cause a turbidity greater than a content of 50 parts per million in the

The development of solvent extraction processes over recent years has led to their application on an increasing scale in metal extraction plants. The author's company has recently been awarded a contract for the design of the world's largest solvent extraction plant based on pump-mix mixer-settlers. The plant is designed to extract copper from a leach liquor and has an aqueous throughput of 12,000 imperial gpm. The design is based largely upon data obtained from the company's own research laboratories, where work has been undertaken on mixer impeller design, baffle design. settler area, organic entrainment recovery, etc. Investigations have been conducted into the effects of mixer impeller speed, recirculation rates, phase continuity, phase ratio, etc., on extraction efficiency, settler area, and organic entrainment losses. The implications of the results of this work on the design of a large plant using pump-mix mixer-settlers are discussed and the techniques used in overcoming certain scaling problem are outlined.

The kinetics of the important reactions occurring in an electrowinning cell have been determined. This information has been used to quantify relationships between the operating variables of current density, solution composition, agitation, and temperature and the resulting current efficiency and deposit quality. Analysis of these results has shown (1) the importance of dissolved iron in determining maximum possible current efficiency and corrosion rate at the cathode suspension loop, (2) the role of agitation, current density, inert salts and temperature in*determining deposit quality and (3) the effects of non-uniformity in the hydrodynamic conditions from the bottom to top of the cell. The significance of the results of this study to the operation of a commercial plant directly treating acid leach solutions is discussed.

DURING the last fifteen years the progress made in the science of lithology has been of a very marked character. From being a miscellaneous collection of facts and observations regarding certain mineral aggregates seemingly incapable of systematic arrangement, it has become a most interesting and orderly department of science. The investigators who have brought about this great change have recorded the results of their labors, and placed at our service an extensive and varied literature on the subject. To this I have paid some attention, and partly from .studying it, partly from my own observations, I have wrought out a classification of original or crystalline rocks, which I venture to bring under the notice of the members of this Institute. The practical importance of the subject will be acknowledged when it is considered that rock species are not without their influence on the contents of the mineral veins which intersect them. Besides, the Institute has been doing good service in defining terms in metallurgy, and no doubt in mining and geology we might

INTRODUCTION Economic evaluation of an open pit mine is similar to the economic analysis of any major investment project in any industry. It requires (1) taking into account all of the costs and revenues that are estimated to be incurred over the economic life of the project; (2) crediting the project with all the tax savings and tax credits that will be realized over the project life from tax deductions and credits related to various project costs; (3) charging the project with all taxes to be paid on taxable income over the project life; and (4) properly accounting for the time value of money for all project costs, revenues, taxes, tax savings, and tax credits when making the overall project economic evaluation. These considerations must be taken into account for any valid method of economic analysis such as discounted cash flow rate of return (DCFROR) or net present value (NPV) analyses. All economic analyses fall into one of two categories. ( 1 ) comparison of income-producing alternatives, or (2) comparison of service-producing alternatives. The analysis of alternatives in either of these categories can be made by using correctly any of five basic economic evaluation approaches which are. ( 1 ) present value, annual value, (3) future value, (4) rate of return (ROR) , and (5 ) break-even analysis. Of these evaluation techniques, DCFROR and NPV analyses are used most widely for evaluating income-producing alternatives while present worth cost and equivalent annual cost analyses are used most often for the evaluation of service-producing alternatives. In this chapter income- producing alternative analysis is emphasized, so DCF- ROR and NPV are utilized for evaluating the case studies presented.

Large volumes of hydrogen are liberated at the cathode during electrolytic precipitation of manganese. Most of the gas escapes from the electrolyte, but a considerable amount may be entrapped in the manganese plate. Gas has been observed to escape from manganese melts in puffs that bite at the surface. It has been reported that castings made with electrolytic manganese tend to rise in the molds; for this reason the manganese is often treated to remove hydrogen before the melt is made or it is premelted and used as cast manganese in making the alloys. The effect of hydrogen on the properties of manganese and its alloys is not known, but its effect on iron and iron alloys has been studied extensively.l.2 The close relationship between iron and manganese suggests that hydrogen may have a similar effect on the properties of manganese and its alloys. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the amount of hydrogen or other gases in typical commercial electrolytic manganese sheet and to investigate ways of removing it most conveniently. Apparatus The apparatus used is shown schematically in Fig. I. It consists of a chamber A in which the metal sample is placed, a vacuum or pressure gauge B, volume gauge C, vacuum pump D, hydrogen container E, auxiliary gas chamber F, and furnace G. The specimen chamber was made of two concentric quartz tubes. The outer one, a, connects with the closed gas system and is surrounded by the furnace G. A second tube, b, fits closely inside a and has a small end that projects into the space for the specimen and holds the thermocouple for measuring the temperature of the sample. The inner tube is joined to the outer tube outside the furnace, with rubber tape and sealing wax, to prevent gas leakage into or out of the closed system. This type of specimen container is loaded very easily and can be used several times if molten metal does not come in contact with the quartz. An ordinary mercury manometer B is used to measure the pressure in the system. The volume gauge C is essentially another mercury manometer, but the volume of the column is much larger than normal and the height of the mercury can be varied by raising or lowering the well H. In this apparatus the tube had a volume of IOO C.C. for a 60-cm. length. For larger changes in gas volumes, auxiliary containers F were used to increase the volume of the system by known amounts. Valves were arranged so that these auxiliary containers could be filled from the system and evacuated by the pump as often as necessary to accommodate the increases in the volume of gas in the system. The furnace G, used to heat the samples, was equipped with an automatic temperature controller, which maintained the desired temperatures within ± 5°C.

ENROLMENT data given in this report of the seventh study of the schools by the Mineral Industry Education Division reveals the critical situation in the mineral engineering schools of the United States. Complete figures for the year 1942-43 show that at that time, about one year after Pearl Harbor, the enrollment of mineral engineers was 6385 or 30 per cent less than in 199441. By October 1943, however, enrollment had dropped to 2050, as reported in the Journal of Engineering Education of January 1944. This was a further reduction of 68 per cent in one year, or 77 per cent in three years. With accelerated programs in effect during the current year, with many graduations since last October, and with the military forces taking practically all the high school graduates, the present enrollment is, of course, much lower than the 2050 above given. DIATOMACEOUS earth occurs in deposits widely distributed throughout the nation. The chief producing areas are in the Western States, where many high-grade deposits are known. Eastern deposits of diatomite are unsatisfactory for many purposes either because of impurity or because of the extremely fine particle size. Eastern users of diatomite, on the whole, must pay for transportation of the material from the west coast. The freight rate is necessarily high because of the great bulk of the diatomite. A satisfactory process of purifying the diatomaceous earths of Maryland and Virginia, which are unsuited for wide use only because of impurities, should be of value to eastern users. In the past, benefication of diatomite by wet processes has been limited to classification or sedimentation for the removal of sand from diatoms. Calcination with salt is used to produce a white diatomite when iron is present in the impurities, and small amounts of clay are rendered inactive in the process. No treatment has been developed whereby a large proportion of clay can be removed from a low-grade diatomaceous earth to give a diatomite of very high purity. In August 1937 the Federal Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with Dr. R. C. Williams, of Baltimore, undertook the problem of purifying low-grade Maryland diatomite by froth flotation. Work was done at the Eastern Experiment Station, College Park. Unless otherwise stated, the crude diatomite used was from the Patuxent River deposits near Dunkirk. This material, consisting of roughly one-third each of clay, quartz sand and diatoms, was representative of the usual low-grade marine diatomite found in the Coastal Plain Miocene beds of Maryland and Virginia and sporadically in other Atlantic coast states. As received, it contained 50 to 60 per cent moisture and probably had been wet since its formation.

In order to obtain a better insight into the pressure-volume relationship of reservoir rocks a theory of pore and rock bulk volume variations is presented. The theory is independent of the shape of the pores but is restricted to isotropic porous media built up of continuous homogeneous matrix material. The main conclusion obtained from this theory is that only three elastic constants and three viscous constants are required for describing pore and rock bulk volume variations if the porosity is explicitly introduced into the treatment. In addition, reasonable approximations are introduced for various types of reservoir rock, e.g., sandstones, limestones, and shales, which lead to further simplifications of the basic formulas. In consequence there is then a further reduction in the number of deformation constants which have to be determined experimentally. It is shown how measurements of these remaining deformation constants can be performed most conveniently. Finally the application of the theory to reservoir studies is discussed and the translation of experimental results obtained in the laboratory into reservoir behavior is considered. INTRODUCTION The decline of fluid pressure in connection with the withdrawal of fluid from an underground reservoir gives rise to a change in volume of both reservoir fluids and reservoir rock. The volume variation of the reservoir rock results in a decrease of both the pore volume and the total volume of the fluid-filled formation. Whereas the variation in volume of the reservoir fluids with pressure is usually known from PVT analysis, that in the volume of the porous medium is rarely measured, as it is considered of minor importance in reservoir engineering. Nevertheless, certain experimental results' suggest that in a number of cases the neglection of the variation in pore volume may introduce errors into material balance calculations of reservoirs producing above the bubble point. Only a few experimental results on the compressibility of porous rocks have been published. The compressibility of pure quartz and of calcite can be found in a paper by Adams and Williamson'. Botset and Reed' carried out some experiments on the compressibility of loose sands, while Carpenter and Spencer' measured the compressibility of a number of consolidated sandstones, which data were supplemented by Hughes and Cooke5. Hall' finally reported a number of experiments designed to study the influence of the porosity on the compressibility of oil-bearing formations, from which it appeared that, particularly in the low porosity range, the compressibility of the pore volume is important enough to be taken into account. Difficulties, however, arise in applying these experimental results to field cases. This is partly due to the fragmentary nature of the published data. Yet even if more complete data were available, the need for a theoretical background would be strongly felt. Such a background can be partially found in studies carried out by Biot,6,7 who published a theory of elastic deformations of porous materials and their influence on fluid displacement within the pores, by Lubinski8, who studied the stress distribution in an elastic porous medium neglecting pore compressibility, and by Gass-mann" who mathematically analysed the elasticity of packings of spheres. The contributions of Biot intro-duce a number of deformation constants which are impractical for reservoir rocks from an aspect of experi-mental determination. The results of wear on marked balls, 4, 31/2, 3, and 2 in. diam are given. All balls were forged steel of practically the same chemical analysis and hardness. The results indicate that balls in a given mill for a given length of time will have equal diameter losses, regardless of size.

VARIOUS rationalizations of preferred orientations in cold worked polycrystalline metals have been based on the operation of at least two,1 three,2 five,4 an indefinite number,5 and all,6 slip systems of the type occurring in single crystals. Pickus and Mathewson3 suggested that the cold rolling texture in face-centered cubic metals could be rationalized on the basis of two or more operating slip directions symmetrically disposed about the direction of flow in such a manner that the resolved shear stress factor is equal for all operating slip systems and lattice rotations cancel each other. The importance of the direction of flow, † the necessity for the operation of slip systems capable of producing the required, changes in external dimensions, the maintenance of a common surface between adjacent grains and a symmetrical arrangement of the operating slip systems in order to produce an end orientation which is stable under additional deformation lead to the following rationalization of textures based on the type of slip systems operative in single crystals. The rationalization is intended to explain why certain orientations are suitable for deformational flow without a change in orientation and thus are stable end orientations or ideal texture orientations. It does not attempt to explain how the grains of a randomly oriented polycrystalline aggregate will reach this orientation. The rationalization is based on the following four postulates: I. The ideal textures for polycrystalline aggregates are the result of reorientations of individual crystals toward the same stable end orientation at which no further reorientation will occur even during additional deformation. Since, in simple slip, - the relative orientations of the stress axis and the active slip system determine the change in orientation during slip, it is considered that the orientation of the stress axis with respect to the ideal texture determines what slip systems must be active to retain the stable end orientation.
