An automatic system for the quantitative analysis of microstrulcture has been developed. The method is based upon a statistical model of microstructure and employs phase intercept fractions as fundamental random variables. Structure-sensitive properties can be related explicitly to parameters derived from the distribution of phase intercept fractions in a matevial. THE properties of mechanical dispersions and of multiphase alloys art: intimately related to the amount, distribution, and intrinsic properties of the dispersed material. In many instances, the amount and distribution of the dispersed substances have greater influence on the over-all system properties than do the properties of the dispersed substance-Such properties as average particle size, particle size distribution, homogeneity of dispersion, volume per cent of dispersed phase, and mean free path between dispersed particles thus become critical in any evaluation of the properties of a dispersion. Unfortunately, techniques for evaluating quantitatively the microstructural characteristics of dis~ersions rapidly and accurately have not been available. If necessary, qualitative or semiquantitative devices can be utilized. Some such devices are based merely upon comparison of the specimens in question with arbitrary standards. Other techniques involve superposition of grids and tabulation of particles observed in different portions of the grid. Still other methods based upon lineal analysis entail counting lines or points at random upon the specimen to be examined; the number of intersections of the line with a given phase, the proportion of line or number of points which are covered by given phase are variously recorded. The mathematical basis for most of the techniques of quantitative metallography have been amply reviewed in the literature.'l2 without exctption, however, the standard techniques for quantitative metallography are either imprecise or are exceedingly tedious to apply. For example, tranverse integrating stage for rapid manual areal fraction measurement has been designed by Smith.3 Howerer, as in the case of any device based upon visual eslimation, operator bias may cause appreciable error. Various flying spot devices, on the other hand register particle size distributions in 2-dimensions, from which it is difficult to derive other properties of the dispersion. Thus, e.g., the 3-dimensional distribution cannot be inferred unless certain rather broad assumptions are made concerning the randomness of distribution and geometrical configuration of dispersed phase. Many limitations to the application of quantitative structural analysis can be overcome by the use of the microdensitometer, which is essentially an automated areal analysis device. The flotation technique as employed by Florida phosphate producing companies for the beneficiation of fine phosphate particles has been standardized over the years. Lower recoveries of coarse Phosphate rock by froth flotation technique, however, led to the development of new methods based on skin flotation of phosphate agglomerates. Recent developments of floating coarse rock in large flotation machines have not yet convinced the rock Producers of their higher separation efficiency. It is interesting to note that the selection of a particular machine is still bared on equipment preference by an individual company as well as proven performance of a particular machine for upgrading a specific material. Various techniques which have been developed to beneficiate the coarse phosphate rock have been discussed. Performance of the individual techniques is presented.

As shafts and tunnels move deeper levels in underground mining, development planning becomes more complex. The most serious problem is the aggravation of environmental conditions due to the imposition of higher-than-natural temperatures upon exposed strata. Since such a problem is a potential hazard to health, safety, and production, the authors have developed a system of computer-derived ambient-air temperature data for every major point of an underground mine under a given set of conditions. This system is comprised of two subsystems: 1) Ventilation network analysis, 2) Estimation of air - current temperature. The former is based on the Hiramatsu-Oka method, an improvement of the Scott-Hinsley method. The Hiramatsu-Oka method allows fast convergence and consideration of various fan characteristics. The latter subsystem considers heat radiation from strata, and the humidity. In several tests conducted at Besshi and Sazare Mines of Japan, the computer-derived data correlated with actual conditions.

The two principal methods of room-and-pillar mining practiced at White Pine make it important to predict variations in the thickness and rock types of a stratum called the upper sandstone. In full column mining, the nearly barren upper sandstone occurs between two ore horizons (called upper shale and parting shale, respectively), and is mined as a part of the ore column. In general, full column mining is not practiced where excessive upper sandstone thickness causes full column ore grade to be substantially lower than parting shale ore. In parting shale mining, the upper sandstone forms the mine roof. Difficulty in predicting upper sandstone character arose because the extent and directions of its variations were not apparent in the property's diamond drilling, in which holes are spaced on 1000-ft centers. A study of sedimentary features, undertaken to improve the predictability of trends in the upper sandstone, led to an interpretation of the sedimentary environment in which the sandstone was deposited. Ripple marks, mud cracks, and cross-bedding, as well as other, less well known features, such as channel casts, flute casts, and current crescent casts, were mapped or recorded. These data, coupled with the knowledge of regional facies changes gained from studying drill core, show that the upper sandstone was deposited by a series of streams flowing northeastward over the underlying parting shale. Deposition of the lowermost bed of the upper sandstone, near the ancient shoreline, was locally preceded by erosion of the parting shale, and the greatest thicknesses of sandstone are found in channels scoured out of the parting shale. Awareness of the rather strong linear trends in the upper sandstone makes it possible to project continuous areas of thick upper sandstone through apparently isolated "highs" in the upper sandstone thickness contour map, which is based on drill-hole information. Since local exceptions to general stratigraphic trends exist, a method was also needed for esti- mating, in detail, the thickness and degree of shali-ness of upper sandstone forming the roof in active parting shale mining areas. Because locally the parting shale was thinned by erosion during the deposition of upper sandstone, parting shale thickness is inversely proportional to upper sandstone thickness. Utilizing information taken from short drill holes into the roof, curves were constructed for the correlation of parting shale thickness (measurable in the mine) with the upper sandstone total thickness, as well as the thickness of its basal member. The White Pine mine is situated in Ontonagon County, approximately 6 miles south of Lake Superior, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (Fig. 1). The orebody mined by White Pine Copper Co. occurs in the lowermost 20 to 25 ft of the Nonesuch formation, a series of middle- to upper-Keweenawan shales, siltstones, and sandstones. This paper discusses the solution of problems in ore grade control and mine planning arising from the presence of an essentially barren sandstone stratum within the orebody. THE OREBODY AND MINING TYPES A brief description of the orebody and mining methods is necessary to show how the upper sandstone affects mine planning and grade control. In the mine, the cupriferous zone of the Nonesuch shale is divided into three major portions, as shown in Fig. 2. Lying conformably on top of the Copper Harbor formation (or "lower sandstone") is the lower part of the orebody, the parting shale. The parting shale is overlain by the upper sandstone. On top of the upper sandstone, the basal portion (8 ft) of the upper shale is quite similar to the parting shale. Both the upper shale and parting shale are divided into a number of smaller stratigraphic units, each having a characteristic copper content, as shown by the histogram of Fig. 2. Other authors1'3 have dealt in detail with the stratigraphy and mineralogy of the orebody. However, in this article, we are concerned with the major subdivisions only, and it will suffice to note the low copper content of the upper sandstone, shown in Fig. 2. A noted ordnance engineer once said to a friend, in speaking of the production of great steel guns, " How is it ? We design our guns with a factor of safety of eight, and the guns burst." The vague way in which internal stresses and strains in iron and steel are often considered and spoken of makes it worth while to examine them, as to their nature, their causes and results, how they may, for useful purposes, be advantageously dealt with, and how, when detrimental or dangerous, they may be reduced or kept within harmless proportions. Rankine defines " strain " as a change of form or dimensions of a solid or liquid mass produced by a stress. This definition seems intended not to cover strains due to internal stresses, and it will help us in the present inquiry to consider strain as a tendency to change as well as an actual change of form. Internal strains in iron and steel are the result of stresses within the mass of the piece, some parts pulling and others pushing in resistance to them; or, in other words, some parts are in tension and some in compression, each part striving to relieve itself from strain and make the piece assume a form in which all parts are at rest. Subdivision, so that each part could relieve its strain by motion relative to the other parts, would, if carried out far enough, practically obliterate strain. The internal strains we are now to consider are not those due to the stresses of the service which the piece is rendering, either alone or as a part of a structure, which may be termed service-strains, but those which originate or at least are contained in the piece itself. The mineralogy of natural iron ore samples and their slimes have been investigated and the nature of slime interference in iron ore flotation has been studied. The results have been correlated with the flotation behavior of a natural ore sample. Various conclusions have been reached as a result of these studies. In the flotation of iron oxide ores, desliming is generally considered to be an essential step to successful separation, irrespective of whether the iron oxide or siliceous gangue minerals are to be floated, although some workers have found empirically that certain collectors and reagent combinations are less sensitive to the presence of slime than others. The detrimental effect of slime is considered to be twofold. First, the presence of slime presupposes a high reagent consumption because of high specific surface. When clays are present and when cationic collectors are used abstraction by ionic exchange may augment this condition. Attempts to compensate by the addition of large amounts of reagent result in only partial correction. Second, slime coatings on granular particles tend to interfere with the bubble-mineral contact. The nature of slime coatings in flotation is quite complex and has been the subject of considerable study; an attempt was recently made by Fuerstenau et al.' to relate the slime-coating density with flotation recovery and with the properties of the electrical double layer at the mineral surfaces. Although major constituent minerals in the oxidized iron ores of the Mesabi and Cuyuna ranges are hematite and goethite (limonite) as the iron oxides, and quartz and chert as the siliceous gangue, very little is known of the mineralogy and of the chemical and physical characteristics of the slimes, and still less of the interaction between slimes, collector, and the mineral surfaces. For pragmatic reasons iron ore slimes are defined as — 20p material, based upon the calculated settling velocity of a quartz sphere of the stated diameter, and of all other equal-settling mineral particles. Active slime interference with flotation is usually attributed to particles 5p in size or finer, the extent of such interference appearing to depend not only on the mineralogy but also on the size distribution of each mineral in the slime fraction. The objective of this work was to acquire a more specific knowledge of the constitution of iron ore slimes and of their role in flotation. The mineralogi-cal composition of natural slimes was obtained by differential thernal analysis (hereinafter referred to as DTA), electron microscopy, and chemical and X-ray analyses. Some flotation tests were made on natural ore samples. The surface properties of several constituent minerals were investigated by electrophoretic measurements and by determination of the adsorption of some typical flotation collectors. Finally, simplified flotation tests were made on granular goethite and quartz in the presence of various artifically prepared slimes; the results were compared with laboratory flotation tests made on natural ores. MATERIAL AND METHODS Mineralogy of Some Iron Ore Slimes: Samples of two wash-ore tailing::, hereinafter identified as A* and B, *Sample A of the present investigation 18 the same am ore A in ref. 3. of a wash ore C, and of a paint rock D, all from the Mesabi range, were selected for investigation on the basis of prior information concerning their flotation behavior. The two wash-ore tailings, when deslimed, were known to respond well to flotation, whereas the wash ore was high in goethite, tended to be slimy, and responded poorly to flotation. The paint rock also exhibited sliming tendencies, and was suspected to contain relatively large quantities of clay minerals because of its high A1203 content. Gruner states that the paint rock of the Mesabi frequently contains kaolinite. To ascertain the relative sliming tendencies of each sample a standardized desliming method was employed. It is possible to construct a simple diagram of the earnings, or the production, of the men employed at a coal mine that will show not only if the conditions tend toward contentment among the men, but if the operating distribution of the work is correct. As earnings are the greatest cause of discontent, even exceeding all the other causes, if contentment exists in the matter of earnings, the likelihood of other discontents flaring up is greatly lessened. The basis of such a diagram would be the Gaussian curve of the normal variation in human ability. Such a curve has long been recognized. H. L. Moore,' in discussing the quantitative relation between wages and ability says: "It has been pointed out that industrial efficiency is dependent upon physical, mental, and moral qualities, and these qualities . . . there is good reason for regarding as being distributed according to the Gaussian law.

Deep-sea manganese nodules are considered to be potential ores of manganese, nickel, cobalt, and copper. Considerable time, effort, and funds have been applied to the study of the distribution of nodules on the seafloor and the location of economically important areas, but less effort has been spent in understanding the origin of nodules. Most theories that have been proposed to explain the origin of manganese nodules have been based on inorganic processes. It is not by coincidence, however, that the area considered to be most economically feasible is, in the zone of high biological productivity in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean and underlain by siliceous biogenic sediment. The genesis of manganese nodules and the concentration of many trace elements are related indirectly, and possibly directly, to the activities of organisms.

THE young metallurgist of today who thinks casually of the technical literature of the steel industry might conclude that little has been published concerning the Bessemer process. This conclusion is true as relating to the last decade or two, but there is a fairly voluminous Bessemer literature in the period of 1860 to 1910, Since that time, however, an entirely new level of metal-lurgical knowledge of steelmaking has been reached; and the present paper is simply an effort to look broadly from this new level and to bring the recorded history of the process up to date, It is an effort to appraise the acid Bessemer method of steelmaking in the light of today's technical knowledge thereof. In this paper matters of history will be dealt with only insofar as they contribute to an understanding of today's situation. Attention will be directed to the apparent causes of past developments in seeking to perceive the true direction of trends now in existence and effective as bearing upon future developments. The paper will discuss the economics of the Bessemer process, but only to the extent that will bear upon the metallurgist's understanding of his respon-sibility. The problem of the quality of Bes-semer steel will be reviewed and examples will be given of the technical data upon which the reasoning of the paper is based, Matters of engineering design, mechanical maintenance, operation and metallurgical investigation will be surveyed. Compari-sons will be made between the Bessemer and open-hearth processes for the sake of clear and ready understanding,

MELTING procedures for most metals and alloys usually include some provision for the control of oxygen, since this element frequently has some undesirable effect on the properties of the metal or alloy concerned. In the melting of the various bronzes, this is especially true, since oxygen can be introduced into the melt in a number of ways, most of which are difficult to control. In making bronzes from virgin materials, oxygen is usually present in the commercial grades of copper used; electrolytic he refined copper ingots usually contain from 0.02 to 0.05 per cent oxygen. When ingot metal or scrap bronze is used in the charge, oxides are almost always present to some degree. Under certain melting conditions and in certain types of melting equipment the atmosphere over the metal may be highly oxidizing. This, of course, may be desirable in the melting practice used, but is certain to introduce appreciable amounts of oxygen into the melt, and that may not be entirely desirable. From the foundry viewpoint oxygen may have several harmful effects on bronzes. The formation of excessive amounts of oxides may produce drossy metal, which, in turn, means dirty castings and a potentially high rejection rate. It is claimed, too, that oxides in the metal may combine with hydrogen to form steam and thereby produce porosity in certain of the bronzes. The presence of certain refractory oxides, such as SnO2, may be undesirable from the viewpoint of making machining difficult, or as possible stress-raisers in the metal matrix. It is often said that excessive oxide present in the liquid metal makes the metal run sluggishly. Since it appears impractical to try to control the amount of oxygen introduced into the metal beyond taking the economical limit of precaution about charging dirty scrap, it would seem that control of the oxygen content of the liquid metal offers the most promising approach to this problem. This might be done by using slags, or covers, or by the use of some element or compound added to the melt to remove oxygen preferentially. Most aspects of this problem have been considered and considerable work has been done along these lines. A reconsideration of the problem is indicated, however, by the controversial nature of the evidence at hand, especially on the possibility of using a chemical deoxidizer to control the oxygen content of bronzes. CHOICE OF DEOXIDIZER The choice of the chemical agent selected as a deoxidizer would naturally depend first on the alloy in which it is to be used; in this particular case the alloy is Navy gun metal. Kansas ranked fourth on the list of oil-producing states during the year 1930. Progressive statistics show that total production for the year will approximate 42,729,085 bbl. When final figures are compiled for Kansas the production may exceed this estimate, and thereby threaten the all-time record of 43,253,470 bbl. in 1918. Throughout the year the cumulative volume of potential drilled-up production has been increased by new discoveries and by extensions to proven areas in the territory west of the Nemaha (granite ridge) Range. Scattered drilling and leasing operations of a constructive nature occurred, but completions declined to the lowest levels in more than 11 years. Average initial production of current completions climbed to a new all-time high of 512 bbl. to the well. Proration measures were applied to the flush pools. The resulting shut-in potential production, as of December 15, is estimated at 110,000 bbl. This estimate is a wild guess. If all wells of the state were permitted to flow wide open for a period of six months production would not exceed 150,000 bbl. a day. The outstanding development of the year was an intensive drilling campaign in southwestern Kansas, which contributed at least 1,000,000 acres of contiguous natural-gas lands to the natural-gas resources of the United States. Production and Development Prospecting for oil in Kansas began shortly after the initial prospecting at Titusville. Operations and interest in the potentialities became active about 1870. This development was restricted to the shallow districts of northeastern Kansas. By 1895 operations had extended southward to the Oklahoma state line and sufficient prospecting had taken place to prove the potentialities of the state. Active prospecting was extended westward by the discovery of oil on the Nemaha Range in Butler County about 1916. The discovery of oil in Russell County added an extensive borderland province in 1923. The important discoveries of oil in Sedgwick County revived interests and operations throughout this territory in 1928. The development of widespread natural-gas lands in extreme southwestern Kansas during 1930 carried active exploration to the western boundary of the state.

The hydrometallurgical processing of an impure zinc oxide fume is described. Flowsheet includes roasting for fluorine elimination and countercurrent leaching to produce a neutral sulphate solution. This solution is combined with zinc sulphide leach solution for subsequent purification and electrolysis. Novel to the neutral leach step is the use of automatic pH control. THE electrolytic zinc plant of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co. Ltd. was erected in 1929-1930 to process zinc sulphide concentrates produced from ore mined at Flin Flon, Manitoba. Since 1930, production of high purity slab zinc has been continuous. In May 1951, construction of a fuming plant was completed and operations were started to recover zinc from copper smelter reverberatory slag. A second zinc-bearing material in the form of an impure zinc oxide fume was then made available for treatment. Coincident with the construction of the fuming plant, additions were made to the electrolytic zinc plant to recover the zinc in the fume as slab metal. The original plant capacity of 70 tons of slab zinc per day was steadily increased up to May 1951, at which time the daily production averaged 130 tons. With the advent of the fuming plant and the processing of zinc oxide fume, production was stepped up to the present capacity of 190 tons per day. Of this, approximately 48 pct is contributed by the processing of zinc oxide fume. This additional source of raw material has allowed a 20 pct cutback in mining and milling operations, thereby adding considerably to the life of the Flin Flon mine. Zinc sulphide concentrates are treated by the usual hydrometallurgical method. Details of this operation and plant were described by Carr and Reikie in 1935' and Kent in 1951.8 The impure fume is treated in two operations. First, it is roasted to eliminate fluorine. Next, it is subjected to a countercurrent leach with spent electrolyte to extract the zinc as a neutral zinc sulphate solution. During this leaching step, soluble impur-

As the working levels in domestic mines are developed to greater depths and work areas move further from the shafts, maintaining a safe and healthful working environment becomes more difficult. Increased temperature and humidity at greater depths becomes first a factor in productivity and then a threat to the miner's safety. Initially, a miner might develop listlessness leading to reduced productivity and reduced alertness. Continued overexertion can lead to heat stroke and possibly death. Mine ventilation engineers, therefore, must not only provide clean air to work areas, but also must provide cooled air. The following article describes the United States Bureau of Mines (USBM) and Foster-Miller's successful development of a high performance, low maintenance direct water to air contact heat exchanger for mine cooling. While heat problems frequently do not develop until mining operations descend below sea level, problems will arise any time mining penetrates high temperature rock. Hot fissure water will increase the severity of the situation, causing increases in wet bulb temperature - the temperature to which perspiring miners reject metabolic body heat. All energy expended in mining adds to the heat load which must be absorbed by the ventilation air. Just when the cooling capacity of ventilation air is needed most, adiabatic compression (autocompression) of air descending the shaft raises air temperatures 1.3g°C (2.5'F) to 2.94"C (5.3OF)/305m (1000 ft) depending on humidity. Increased temperatures decrease the ability of the air to absorb heat from the mine, and work area temperatures rise. Once forced ventilation air can no longer maintain safe work area temperatures, refrigeration methods must be employed. Many mines now use cooling coils for this purpose. A cooling coil uses refrigerated mine water to cool the air by passing the air through banks of copper tubing filled with cold water. Heat from the air is transferred to the water through the pipe with the aid of fins. Conventional water to air heat exchangers prove troublesome for many mines be- cause of the high levels of dust that are encountered, causing these exchangers to operate at relatively low efficiencies. A more satisfactory approach to work- place cooling is desired - one that offers reduced maintenance and increased cooling efficiency.

With each year that passes hydrometallurgical processes are being more widely used to recover base metals from ores and concentrates. Generally these processes involve liquid-solid separation of metal-bearing liquors from barren residues. This may be done by countercurrent decantation, thickening and filtration, or filtration or centrifuging only. Choice of method is governed by chemical and physical characteristics of the pulps; cost of labor, power, materials, and waste disposal; and even by the amount of capital available when building plans are under way. Since all these controlling factors change with time and location and with technological advances, the separation method must be re-evaluated when new plants or expansion programs are contemplated. At the Sherritt Gordon refinery in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, an ammonia pressure leaching process recovers nickel, copper, and cobalt from the nickel concentrate produced at Lynn Lake, Manitoba.' Pregnant liquors are separated from the barren leach residues in a thickener-filter liquid-solids circuit. The decision to use this type of separation was based on a summation of economic factors during the pilot plant and design stages. Although countercurrent decantation was not incorporated in the refinery flowsheet, the problems solved in thickening the leach residues and the experience gained in operating the commercial plant are pertinent to countercurrent decantation, particularly where it is applied to slow-settling leach slurries or slurries having a relatively high vapor pressure of a valuable, obnoxious, or poisonous vapor.

In order for fiber composite materials to find extensive use in structures, it is necessary to develop techniques for joining these materials. Riveting and adhesive bonding are two possible techniques which have been investigated although the former is less desirable because the low shear strength of most matrices makes this type of joint subject to bearing failure. Welding is an effective means of joining, especially for high-temperature applications where ad-hesives are weak; however, there are significant limitations placed on welding composite materials. The commonly used fusion welding techniques will find less use for joining composites because the two phases are often unable to stand exposure to such a stringent environment. In the case of eutectic composites, fusion welding will completely destroy the controlled microstructure. Solid-state techniques such as diffusion bonding offer potential success with certain design requirements placed on such joints. Since the primary mechanism of load transfer from matrix to fiber is shear parallel to the fibers, little load can be transferred across a butt-welded interface perpendicular to the aligned fibers. Successful joint designs must have a component parallel to the fibers to allow a shear area for load transfer. Configurations such as lap and scarf welds are likely to be successful. This note describes some results of experiments with diffusion-bonded joints in A13Ni whisker-reinforced aluminum. The composite material, prepared by unidirectional solidification of the A1-A13Ni eutectic, is described elsewhere.'-' It consists of aligned micron size whiskers in a matrix of aluminum. THE development of a geological department as an integral part of the Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Co. in the Birmingham district, Ala-bama, in 1908 was an innovation probably unique for any mining organ-ization south of the Ohio River, At that time a few of the oil companies were starting geological departments, but there were no geologists among the larger industrial organizations. The Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Co. had been a substantial producer of pig iron for many years and was just getting a start in the manufacture of steel products from the pig iron. It had large acreages of coal land, ore land and timber land, but there was lacking the detailed knowledge of the possible mineral resources of much (of its territory, and this territory at that time covered an area in the neighborhood of 500,000 acres in the states of Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia. Those responsible for the operations of the mining properties, not being familiar with the kind of help that might be expected from geologic work, were decidedly skeptical of the utility of the work. Therefore it was necessary to develop cooperation with the mining organization, by not infringing upon its functions, and by developing the work in such a manner as to demonstrate to the mining department its practical utility. In the first instance the man responsible for a mining operation is apt to assume the attitude that the geologist is a blockader, because the geologist, unfortunately, is obliged to point out difficulties in the carrying out of mining operations in the way originally planned. He points out the dangers of mining out one coal or metal seam at the ultimate expense of an upper or lower seam, and he develops structural features, such as faults and folds, which call to the attention of the mining operator diffi-culties in his future operations, which the latter had not anticipated. Eventually, however, -the value of having these data became ap to the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Co., and the operators not only welcomed the geological work and cooperated fully in its acquisition of essential information, but reached the point of asking assistance and advice; and complete coordination of the two activities has existed for many years.

SINCE the preparation of the Fall Meeting announcement the Montana Section has extended an invitation to the members traveling to Spokane to make at least a short stop at Butte, en route. Accordingly, the train schedule below has been worked out as an alternative to that announced in the general circular. This will permit a half day in which to visit either mines at Butte or the smelter at Anaconda and an opportunity for an evening meal with our Montana members.
