The activity of SiO2, in the entire liquid system SiO2-CaO-Mg0-A12O3 at 1600°C is calculated from the distribution of silicon between these slags and Fe-Si-C alloys saturated with either graphite or silicon carbide, the activity coefficient of silicon in these alloys, and the requisite thermodynamic data. The activities of the other components in the ternary systems SiO2-CaO-A12O3, SiO2-MgO-CaO, SiO2-MgO -A12O3 are computed from these data by the IrON blast-furnace slags can be regarded as consisting of the four major oxide components, SO2, CaO, MgO, and A12O3 along with minor proportions of other oxides and of sulfur. The purpose of this study is to measure the activity of silica in the liquid solutions of these four oxides at iron-making Gibbs-Duhem equation with the aid of the known free energies of several of the interoxide compounds and the accepted phase diagrams. Based on these activities, new data are Presented for the free energy of formation of a number of the interoxide compounds. The free energy of mixing the liquid metasilicates of CaO and MgO shows slight positive deviations from the ideal. temperatures and to obtain activities of the other components by application of the Gibbs-Duhem equation and the properties of several interoxide compounds. Recent investigations on the activity of silica in the SiO2-CaO-A12O3 system1-3 and recogntion of a serious error in older data for the free energy of formation of SiO2 (Ref. 4) have succeeded in bringing a fair degree of concordance into the results of different investigators. One of the most important problems of reservoir mechanics is the prediction of the behavior of a gas and oil producing reservoir for a variety of production programs. In the absence of a knowledge of the behavior of even idealized systems, it has been difficult, if not impossible, to determine which production program would yield maximum economic recovery. The problem was formulated mathematically many years ago, hilt a solution of the equations had never been obtained because of their extreme complexity. The solution of the problem became possible, however, with the advent of modern computing machines. This paper describes a digital method of solving the problem and discusses some of the results which have been obtained to date. The IBM Type 701 Electronic Data Processing Machines located at IBM's New York Scientific Computing Service were used successfully to perform the computations. The flow of gas and oil through a reservoir can be described mathematically by two second-order, nonlinear partial differential equations which must be solved simultaneously. All derivatives were replaced by finite differences to bring the equations into a form suitable for digital calculations. A number of finite ditference formulations were investigated and one form was found which resulted in stable, convergent solutions. This form was used to obtain .solutions for both radial and linear systems producing by solution gas drive. The results presented in this paper are: (a) saturation profile within the hypothetical reservoir vs. time, (b) pres.strre profile within the hypothetical reservoir vs. time. (c) gas-oil ratio vs. cumulative recovery, and (d) ultimate recovery. The saturation profile clearly shows the effect of critical gas saturation. The saturation near the well-bore drops quickly to the critical gas saturation and remains essentially at that value until the remainder of the reservoir also has dropped to the critical gas saturation. The pressure profile shows a smooth variation of pressure across the reservoir. The gas-oil ratio drops slightly during the early stage of production until the critical gas saturation is reached, rises rapidly from then on and eventually passes through a sharp maximum just before the economic limit of production is reached. For the radial example presented in this paper, the average oil .saturation of the reservoir at a time corresponding to the limit of economic production was 56.5 per cent and the ultimate recovery was 6.86 per cent. The difference between change in saturation and ultimate recovery is caused by .shrinkage of the oil phase. The solution time with the 701 Computer is sufficiently short to permit an economically feasible investigation of the effects of variation of the many parameters which describe an oil reservoir. In particular, the ultimate recovery for various systems can he determined as a function of rock and fluid properties, of well spacing. and of production rate. INTRODUCTION The effective planning for maximum economic depletion of oil reservoirs is one of the major problems confronting oil producers. The most important part of the planning is prediction of the response of the oil reservoir to a particular production program. The Phosphoria formation of the northwestern states presents a stimulating challenge to workers in every field of mineral technology. In addition to its large reserves of phosphate, the formation has been found to contain important amounts of fluorine and several metals, such as vanadium, nickel, and molybdenum. Because these minor metals in the Phosphoria do not have their usual glitter, concentrations of them are not easily discovered nor appraised. Like the phosphate itself, production of these metals very likely can be achieved only through use of costly chemical methods, for their mineralogy precludes treatment by the usual methods. In addition, in much of the area the containing rocks lie in complexly folded and faulted structures, which complicate mining and increase its cost. Yet the chain of research necessary to establish what elements are present; their geographic and stratigraphic distribution and reserves; the most suitable methods for recovering them; the combination of beds which, when ruined and processed, will yield the greatest recovery of the most valuable elements; and the methods most adaptable to their profitable extraction may well lead to the development of an important mineral industry and may make possible a significaut reduction in the cost of fertilizer this in itself would be an achievement of momentous importance—and at the same time make the nation more self-sustaining in critical materials. THAT geology and mining should stand in close and mutually helpful relationship was recognized in the United States at an early period, but it is not possible to set a precise date at which the study of ore deposits became a thoroughly reputable and important branch of geological science. As early as 1850, appeared the first ,part of Foster and Whitney's report1 on the Lake Superior region, devoted mainly to the copper-bearing areas, followed, in the succeeding year, by the second part,2 on the iron lands. This appears to have been the first comprehensive report on what might, at that time at least, be called "western" ore deposits to be prepared and published under the auspices of the Federal government. An outgrowth from this work was Whitney's Metallic Wealth of the United States,3 which appeared in 1854. It was the earliest general work on the ore deposits of the country, and remained a standard reference book for marly forty years. From 1853 on, various parties were sent out by the War Department to explore routes for proposed railways and wagon roads from the Mississippi Valley to the Pacific Coast. Geologists were attached to most of these parties, but their work was mainly of broad reconnaissance character, little attention being paid to ore deposits. Although the

This paper presents the results of studies of the elasticity of some isotropic and anisotropic rock samples based on longitudinal- and shear-wave pulse velocity measurements. Experimental evidence from velocity measurements on isotropic steel samples is also presented to show, within error limits, that any two of the elastic constants required to completely describe the elasticity of an isotropic solid can be obtained from any two of the following four velocity measurements: longitudinal "rod,' "plate," extended medium (infinite medium equivalent), or shear wave. Measurements of three of these velocities in an approximately isotropic basaltic rock sample are used to illustrate this application to this type of rock. For the anisotropic study, a suite of Colorado oil shale samples is used. These rocks exhibited transverse isotropy. The five elastic constants required to completely specify this type of anisotropy are obtained from longitudinal- and shear-wave pulse velocity measurements made in directions parallel, perpen-dicular, and at 45° to the bedding plane. Density, velocity, and elastic modulus relationships among these shales are also given. Duvall 1 has described a method for determining the elastic constants of isotropic and, in two cases, anisotropic rock samples. This method is based on ultrasonic pulse techniques and on resonance-frequency measurements of rock samples in the shape of rods (diamond drill cores). VESTA No. 4 and 5 mines supply most of the high volatile coal required for Jones & Laughlin's byproduct coke plants. Until 1944 all coal produced in these mines was loaded by hand. Pressure to mechanize at Vesta was brought on by the manpower shortage in World War 11, and in 1943 a decision was made to change to mechanical loading. It was the opinion of those concerned that by use of selective mining the coal would be clean enough to be processed by the existing preparation plants. At that time coal cleaning at Jones & Laughlin consisted of hand picking the larger sizes at the mine tipples and wet washing at plants located at the Pittsburgh and Aliquippa Works. A typical section of the Pittsburgh seam as it occurs at Vesta is shown in Fig. 1. The 14 to 16 in. of drawslate immediately over the coal is too soft to be used for roof and must be taken down, leaving the rooster coal just above for roof. In selective mining an attempt is made to mine the coal under the drawslate first and then load out the drawslate separately as refuse. In full seam mining slate and coal are shot down at the same time and loaded out. Mechanical loading at Vesta created new problems. It was found that selective mining, even when carefully applied, increased the refuse in the raw coal to such an extent that the washers at the mills were unable to handle it. Large tonnages of refuse were being transported, a reject disposal problem was created, and good metallurgical coal was being loaded out and lost. In addition, the selective method handicapped operation of the loading machines. Fig. 2 shows how the ash content of the raw coal increased as mechanization proceeded at No. 5 mine. New Preparation Plant: After an exhaustive study of this situation by J & L management, is was decided that a preparation plant should be constructed at the mines, capable of handling full seam mined coal and large enough to process full production of both No. 4 and No. 5 mines. It was decided that from the standpoint of inside operation and haulage the new plant should be located as near as possible to the old No. 5 tipple on the Monongahela River near Vestaburg. Full seam mining at Vesta could be expected to produce a tremendous volume of refuse along with the coal, since 14 to 16 in. of slate would be mined with an average 78 in. of coal. Disposal of this refuse required serious consideration in selecting a plant site. The only area near Vestaburg large enough for disposal of the plant refuse was across the Monongahela River at LaBelle. Ample space was available here, and construction at this location would not interfere with operation at the No. 5 tipple. It had been noted over the years that the sulfur content of the coal produced at Vesta was gradually increasing, and there was every indication that this increase could be expected to continue as the mines developed further from the river. It was decided to construct a three-part separation plant with complete blending facilities to produce both metallurgical and steam coal. In this system an attempt is made to reduce the sulfur in the metallurgical coal in a secondary cleaning process. Construction of the new preparation plant got under way early in 1947 and continued until the spring of 1950. The plant was designed to handle 2400 tph of raw coal containing 30 to 35 pct refuse. Cost of outside buildings and equipment was about $14 million. Total cost of the plant, together with improvements and changes made at this time, was approximately $21 million.

THIs old and once famous district played, through its enormous production of silver and gold, an important part in the history of the State of San Luis Potosi. According to a pamphlet prepared under the direction of the Governor of the State, Sr. Don Blas Escontria, and presented to the visiting members of the Institute during the Mexican meeting of 1901, this district is situated 20 km. east of the city of San Luis Potosi, in a range of mountains of moderate height, extending 135 km. N. and S., and 16 km. E. and W.; and the mineralized area hitherto developed is about 600,000 sq. m. The history of the district, as given by the record dated 1778, and formerly kept in the Sail Francisco convent, says that it was discovered in 1575 by Sr. Don Pedro Irarte, and adds that the city of San Luis Rey de Francisco de1 Potosi received its name (in allusion to the famous Potosi mines in Bolivia) by reason of the remarkable productiveness of its gold- and silver-mines in the first period of their exploration, during which they paid to the Crown, as quintos (the fifth part of the product), $97,000,000, as appears from the accounts of the royal treasury. The amount of the quintos paid during the " bonanza period " of 80 years was $72,000,000. The larger sum first mentioned probably represents a longer series of years. But either will suffice to indicate the great wealth of the mines. In 1663, the decadence of the industry began with the caving-in of several mines, concerning which the record of 1778, already cited, says, in substance, that on Good Friday one of the owners in the enterprise, in view of the unfavorable prospect of a lawsuit in which he was engaged, set fire to the timbers supporting the underground galleries and workings of the Sail

Detailed study was made of a number of rimming ingots, both low and high carbon, and especially upon effects of superimposed air pressure. Requirement to suppress core bubbles is between 10 and 15 atm; at 6.5 atm freezing was in semikilled manner and at 3 atm, steel was of rising type. Probable mechanism of freezing under various conditions is discussed. AN earlier paper' reported an investigation made by a committee for studying rimming steel ingots appointed by Jernkontorets in Stockholm. The present paper is the outcome of some further work done by the same committee. Since the characteristics of ordinary rimming steel are connected closely .with the amount of gas liberated during freezing and since this amount of gas is governed by the pressure, it was considered of interest to ascertain in what manner and to what extent definite pressures applied to the top of the liquid steel in the mold would affect the solidification process and the consequent structure of a rimming steel of ordinary composition. The experiments were made at the Domnarfvets Steel Works. The steel was made according to normal practice in a 4-ton Rennerfelt electric furnace. Ferromanganese was added in the furnace; no aluminum was added, with one exception. Analyses of the four heats are given in Table I. The top-poured ingots measured about 12 in. sq x 48 in. and weighed about 1300 lb. One or two ingots of each heat were allowed to solidify under pressure, using a special device for admitting compressed air to the upper closed part of the mold, as shown in Fig. 1. A heavy plate sealed with asbestos was bolted to the top of the mold. The plate had a tapered aperture for pouring. Immediately after pouring the hole was closed by a wedged plug, and compressed air was admitted through a hole in the plug. Because of some delay in applying the plug, full pressure was not reached immediately. The pressure was adjusted to the desired value as indicated by a manometer. In order that the interior of the ingot might have the benefit of the pressure, the freezing of the top crust was delayed by a refractory lining applied to the top part of the mold, Fig. 1. Ingots were also cast from each heat without applied pressure, and with and without refractory lining at the top. Axial sections of ingots were cut either of the whole ingot or of some part of it of special interest; sections were polished and usually etched.' To facilitate description of structures the following terms may be used for different types of ingots solidified under gas evolution: 1. Box-hat or boot-leg ingot: Abundant gas evolution during casting and during rimming; no rim holes. 2. Normal rimming ingot: Lively gas evolution during rimming; usually rim holes in lowest part of

Fine grinding cannot be accomplished in machines in which the component parts move in definite and restricted paths with respect to each other. Such machines are crushers. A "grinding mill" may be defined as any machine in which the crushing elements are free to make direct contact with each other but are kept from doing so by the sand to be crushed. Such a machine must possess the ability to give numerous contacts per unit of time. Upon consideration, one will see that this definition nearly includes the old Chilean and Huntington mills, the "rolls" and the stamp mill. It definitely includes all forms of ball, pebble and rod mills. The ideal (perfeet) grinding mill may be defined as one in which the crushing elements are identical in shape and substance and possess perfect freedom of motion with respect to one another. Of the mills mentioned, only the ball and pebble mills come under this definition of the ideal mill. Even the rod mill fails to get a place under this definition of the perfect mill. Modern Fine-grinding Mill In current practice fine grinding is performed in rotating cylinders1 partially loaded with hard objects, the agitation of which accomplishes the crushing or grinding of the rock or ore. The hard objects called "grinding media" nearly always are steel or some other alloy of iron. Hard rock (flint pebbles) have been and still are used to a limited extent. When steel is used as the grinding substance, the form is the sphere or "ball." The combination of rotating cylinder and steel-ball grinding media is termed "ball mill." Shapes other than the sphere have been tried. Cylindrical grinding media also have been and are now used in grinding mills. When cylindrical media are used the mill is termed "rod mill." Mechanical Elements of Grinding Mills The mechanical elements of a grinding mill arc: (1) the rotating element, (2) the grinding media, (3) the rotating means.

In recent years considerable publicity has been given to the problem of atmospheric pollution by fuel-burning equipment. Legislation has been stimulated and smoke ordinances have been enacted, the provisions of which show a definite trend toward stricter control of the emissions not only from the stacks of industrial fuel users but also from the chimneys of domestic consumers. As a result of war conditions, some slackening in the enforcement of these ordinances may be noted, but this is only a temporary expediency caused by the changes necessary in the distribution of the nation's fuel supplies and difficulties in securing the necessary equipment. Previous trends may be expected to continue in the postwar period. Largely because of the consumer demand for automatic heat, but partly because of the legislation against smoke emission, there has been a marked increase in the use of domestic underfeed stokers with the past decade. When correctly adjusted and operated, these units reduce the smoke emission materially, so that even the high-volatile bituminous coals may be burned with little or no emission of objectionable smoke. Unfortunately, however, the use of the domestic underfeed stoker introduces another problem; namely, fly-ash. Production of Fly-ash The term "fly-ash" is a misnomer, since the fly material is generally a mixture of small carbonaceous particles varying from green coal to coke, and inorganic particles ranging from fluffy ash to small particles of fused clinker. For want of a more comprehensive name, however, the term fly-ash is used throughout this paper to include all the fly material. Even with hand-fired furnaces a certain amount of fly-ash is produced, which necessitates periodic cleaning of the boiler flues or furnace radiator, the smoke pipe, and occasionally the chimney itself. With stoker operations the amount of fly-ash is increased many fold, because of the higher velocity of air travel through the fuel bed. Frequently the amount of this fly-ash attains such proportions as to constitute a definite nuisance to the householder and his neighbors and distracts very materially from the otherwise automatic or semi-automatic performance of the stoker. Although the problem of well spacing is one of the most important involved in the production of oil, it must be considered at the present time as still subject to further development. The published literature on this question is so voluminous that we cannot enter here into a review of it, except to refer to the recent papers by L. L. Foleyl and E. A. Stephen-son,2 where other references are cited. However, a decisive and conclusive answer to the problem of well spacing in any general form does not seem to have been developed. And while we shall be unable to present the desired solution in the present paper, it is nevertheless felt that the material to be given here not only provides the physical ground work for the ultimate solution, but shows qualitatively the essential factors that enter the well-spacing problem. Field studies of the well-spacing problem, in which the ultimate recoveries from different fields with different well spacings have been compared, have generally suffered from the lack of knowledge as to the similarity of the inherent characteristics of the producing reservoirs being compared, such as the sand volumes, the sand porosities, the sand permeabilities, the original reservoir pressures, the presence or absence of gas caps, the presence or absence of effective water drives, and the economic limits of production rates at which the various fields were considered to have yielded their ultimate recoveries. Certainly no one who is evaluating originally the economic significance of any oil reservoir would deliberately ignore these phases of the problem. And it is equally certain that no one would reasonably expect the ultimate recoveries from two reservoirs, even with the same well spacing, to be identical regardless of these other factors. More reliable results might be expected from comparisons of the recoveries obtained from different leases with different well spacings, but producing from the same reservoir sand. Unfortunately, however, even conclusions for such studies may be subject to serious errors. The reason simply is that however much one may insist that an operator is entitled only to the oil immediately underneath his surface acreage he will nevertheless drain the surrounding properties as long as his reservoir

Apparently the widespread agitation for the codification of our mining laws has had its effect, and it is quite possible that Congress will take up the question during this present session. The greatest objection to our present statutes pertaining to metalliferous deposits seems to be directed against the law of the apex. Those who are not in favor of changing this law are very far in the minority and they apparently realize that it is useless to urge its retention. Next in importance to the repeal of the law of the apex, seems to be a widespread advocacy for the repeal of the law requiring discovery of mineral before a valid location of a mining claim can be made. To a lesser extent there appears to be a desire to have the law changed so as to allow patent for claims without mineral discoveries. The purpose of this article is to review the arguments in favor of the proposed change of the discovery requirement, to show some of the evils that may be expected to result therefrom, and to consider whether a system may be devised to correct the undesirable features of the present law in this respect and at the same time not expose the mining fraternity and the general public to the evils which would result from the repeal of this fundamental requirement. Under the law as at present framed, the validity of a mining location is dependent upon the fact of discovery of mineral within the boundaries of the land claimed. " * * * but no location of a mining claim shall be made until the discovery of the vein or lode within the limits of the claim located" (Sec. 2,320, U. S. Rev. Stat.). All authorities agree that discovery is the source of the miners' title. Lindley, in his valuable work on Mines (3d Ed., Sec. 335), lays down the rule in part as follows: "Discovery is the initial fact. Without that no right can be acquired. * * * Such discovery must precede the location, or be in advance of intervening rights. The proof of recording and marking a claim will not authorize the court to presume a discovery." As is well stated by the U. S. Supreme Court in Erhard v. Boaro (113 U.S. 536):

Geological Sketch.-The rhyolite area near Silver Cliff includes what may be called the Silver Cliff plateau, with Round mountain and the intervening valley. The plateau is about 2 miles long and 1 mile wide. From its northern part rise the White hills, which have no special topographic importance, as their highest point is only 400 ft. above the northern edge of the rhyolite mass. Round mountain, on the other hand, is a quite sharply pointed conical hill, so steep-sided as to constitute an important topographic feature, although its elevation above the plains around it is barely 700 ft. The summit of Round mountain is dense banded rhyolite, with steep, irregular clip; the southern end is breccia containing fragments of the banded rock. There are slight exposures of glassy forms of rhyolite on the lower slopes. On the east, the Archaean rocks extend half-way up the side of the mountain, and the contact between them and the rhyolite is vertical, or dips steeply to the west. This mountain is supposed to be at the vent from which the rhyolite of the plateau was poured out. The Silver Cliff plateau occupies the site of a former basin, in which at one time there was probably a lake. At the time of the rhyolitic outburst of the Rosita hills there was a local eruption of the same character in this region, commencing with showers of volcanic ash and of rock-fragments, which filled the lake and built tip about it hills which have since been removed in great measure by erosion. At present the southern half of the plateau is capped by solid lava to a depth in places of 150 ft. The cliff of blackened rhyolite on the southern edge, where the main discovery of ore was made, is from 30 to 50 ft.

The Asientos-Tepezala district is in the north of the State of Aguasca-lientes, about 30 miles north of the city of Aguascalientes, the capital. The district is reached by a standard-gage railway on the west side through the junction, Rincon de Romos, which is on the main line of the National Railways of Mexico from El Paso to Aguscalientes. The terminal is Tepezala. On the east side a narrow gage connects Asientos with the junction, San Gil, on the main line, Asientos to San Luis Potosi. Tepezala on the west side of the Asientos hills is about 2 miles from Asientos on the east side. The area between the two mining centers is separated by a low subdued divide which forms the central part of the hills. The district is in a group of isolated hills surrounded by characteristic bolsón plains. The hills rise above the surrounding plains about 6500 to 10,000 ft.; the highest peak is Alta Mira. The two mining districts lie somewhat upon the flanks of the hills at about the same elevation, 7200 ft. The district is an old one and has been known since early in the 17th Century when the mines were worked by the Franciscan Monks. Their mining operations, which were limited to the oxidized ore above the water level, consisted chiefly in extracting silver from the Santa Francisca vein. To judge from the old workings and the remains of surface plant, the operations were on a large scale. By modern mining operations since about 1900, the various mines of the district have been one of the principal sourees of ore for the smelter located at Aguascalientes. Topography The topographic features of the Asientos hills are largely controlled by the character of the underlying rocks. During the Tertiary period, the entire group of hills was probably covered by extrusive volcanic material in the form of cones and lava flows. The central part of these have since been carried away by erosion, so that remnants have been left along the borders of the hills. These remnants form rather conspicuous peaks,
