This study is an appraisal of the feasibility of recovery and the possible chemical and physical uses of the limestone from the Greenbrier Formation in western West Virginia. Data on minability, occurrence, quality, and markets were obtained from published and unpublished sources and by a limited mail survey combined with personal contacts. The estimated costs of recovery by deep mining techniques are considerably higher than competitive surface and shallow subsurface operations. Compositional in formation available for this study was limited but indicated the suitability of the limestone for most physical uses and some chemical process uses in appraisal of the uses and demand reveals that immediate markets may be difficult to establish, but for some uses long-term prospects may be encouraging, especially if the quality of limestone would be suitable for lime manufacture or use as metallurgical fluxstone.

Dynamic pile testing is now over 20 years old as a routinely applied tool for evaluating driven pile installation. The first test on a cast-in-place pile was performed more that 15 years ago. The research that produced the method began almost 30 years ago. But, questions still arise regarding the appropriate use of this technique so some review is useful. Today a number of methods including dynamic testing all depending in some way on the application of dynamics are in routine use. First, Wave Equation analysis can be used to predict pile driveability before going to the field. The same approach can be used during driving to estimate the bearing capacity based on the blow count observed in the field. Dynamic measurements, on the other hand, can only be used after pile driving has begun. They offer predictions of pile capacity as well as measurements of hammer, driving system, and pile driving performance characteristics. The first part of this paper will be devoted to discussing how the foundation engineer can use these tools. First, a brief review of what dynamic methods actually do. In Wave Equation analysis a numerical model of the hammer, driving system, pile, and the soil is created by the engineer. The hammer is dropped on the pile and using a discrete, dynamic analysis the motion of the individual pile elements is calculated as a function of time. Of course, input information must be supplied by the program user to describe the hammer, driving system, pile, and soil. In the current state of development, the primary problem in input data is with the hammer performance (efficiency) and the soil description. Research may be able to do a better job with the soil data, but hammer performance will always vary from hammer to hammer and is dependent on the affectiveness of the inspection process. Prior to beginning pile driving the Wave Equation analysis supplies the best available estimate of what will happen when driving begins. It gives an estimate of blow count during driving, driving stresses, both tension and compression in the pile, and for diesel hammers, stroke. The selection of the driving system can be checked with the results of Wave Equation analysis and modifications can be made if required. For example, if the blow count at the required capacity was deemed excessive by the contractor a larger hammer could be tried or if driving stresses were too high changes could be made in the cushion or the hammer selection could be modified. All of these modifications are possible with only the cost of a computer run. The primary questions regarding the accuracy and reliability of Wave Equation analysis at this time is with regard to the assumptions made to represent the soil characteristics and the difficulty in predicting hammer performance.

SO many variations of lead-zinc ores occur in nature that it is impossible to state any rules that will apply to the concentration of ores of this type. Some have lead and zinc in approximately equal amounts; others may have pre- dominant amounts of one or the other metal. There are gradations from all sulfide to completely oxidized minerals. Some such ores carry little pyrite, others contain much more pyrite than they do lead and zinc combined. The behavior of ores in flotation is largely a function of their lead-zinc ratios. their content of pyrite or pyrhotite, the nature of existing soluble salt conditions, the character of the gangue constituents: and the speed with which the minerals float. For the purposes of this paper only those lead-zinc ores handled commonly in present-day flotation practice will be considered. These are practically all-sulfide ores with relatively minor degrees of sulphatization or oxidation.

During late 2010, a scientifically founded water spray system was developed for continuous miners (CM) (Patent Pending) that reduces respirable dust exposure for miner operator by about 30%. It includes engineered sprays around the cutting drum, outer bit-ring sprays, chassis sprays and side cutter boom sprays. About 3.6 ? 4.5m (12-15 ft) behind these sprays is additional sprays that spatially cover the area between the CM chassis and the mine roof and ribs. The spray system uses approximately the same volume of water as currently used on CMs with similar operating pressures. An Illinois mine decided to implement these concepts on a CM during rebuild stage. Dust control performance of the rebuilt CM was evaluated using gravimetric sampling and real-time monitoring using multiple personal dust monitors (PDMs). The average results based on about 105 cuts show about 30% and 20% reduction in dust exposure for the miner operator, and the haulage unit operator. Visibility in the mining areas was also significantly improved. The coal company has already decided to implement the system on all their CMs.

The principal event in the development of oil and gas in Missouri in 1942 was the drilling of the Cities Service Oil Company's No. I Jim Cook, in the northwest corner, NW. 1/4 sec. 32, T. 65 N., R. 39 W., Atchison County, in the northwest corner of Missouri. This well, not yet completed, bailed several barrels of free oil in about 27° Baume from a sand called the Bartlesville by those in charge, at a depth of 1450 ft. The well is on a block of leases obtained after the area, which is covered by several hundred feet of glacial drift, had been prospected by core drilling. Earlier in the year the same company drilled a well on the Glen Gray farm in the southwest corner, SW. 1/4 sec. 29, T. 65 N., R. 39 w., to a depth of 2427 ft. in the Hunton lime with a rotary drill. Oil stains in this hole led to the drilling of the second well. Frothers are surfactants used in floatation to aid generation of small bubbles. Studying events at the moment of bubble creation is a challenge because of the short time frame. This presentation introduces a novel acoustic approach. The technique has the resolution capable of detecting events that occur within 1-2 ms. The transition from coalescence to non-coalescence is tracked as a function of surfactant concentration and gas rate through the capillary. Results are given for some common flotation frothers and n-alcohols (C4-C8). A stress model is used to give a qualitative explanation to the observed action of frothers on coalescence prevention. Results for salt (sodium chloride) are included for comparison).

An investigation was conducted to determine the stress-strain behavior and tensile properties of metallic composites and to relate them to the properties of the base materials. Tungsten fibers in a copper matrix were chosen as the model sys-tem to investigate these properties. Room-temp-atzcre tensile and dynamic -modulus tests were used To meet the demand for improved structural materials, considerable effort is being directed toward the creation of composite materials. One such material under investigation is the fiber-reinforced composite, in which a ductile, relatively weak matrix is reinforced with high-strength fibers. Some work has been done on the reinforcement of metallic matrices with metallic fibers1"5 as well as with ceramic-whisker reinforcement. Summaries of much of this work have been published by Mach-lin7 and Baske~.' Work done at the Lewis Research Center of NASA-" has involved the making and testing of composites composed of a fiber, tungsten, and a matrix, copper, which were insoluble in each other. An equation was presented that showed the relation between the ultimate tensile strength of the composites and the strengths and relative volume percents of the components. This relation was verified experimentally for composites containing fibers extending the full length of the specimen as well as for composites reinforced with short-length or discontinuous fibers. Since the publication of the preliminary results,9'10 additional data have been obtained. This paper presents these data as well as analyses of the stress-strain behavior and the mechanics of deformation of uni-axially oriented, fiber-reinforced metallic composites, in which both components are mutually insoluble. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Composites were made with high-purity copper as the matrix and 3-, 5-, and 7-mil-diam tungsten wire as the reinforcing fiber. Some specimens were made in which the reinforcing fiber extended completely through the full length of the composite test section. The fibers were placed in ceramic to determine these properties. The composites were reinforced with either continuous or discontinuos tungsten fibers. The tensile properties and stress-strain behavior of composites reinforced with either type of reinforcement were similar, and in both cases the full strength of the fiber was utilized. tubes to insure axial orientation and infiltrated with copper at 2200°F for 1 hr. Composites were also made with short-length (3/8 in. long) 5-mil-diam tungsten fibers as discontinuous reinforcement and infiltrated under the same conditions. The reinforcing fibers in both cases were longitudinally oriented in the direction parallel to the tensile axis. Room-temperature tensile tests were conducted on the composites, stress-strain curves were obtained, and ultimate tensile strength and elongation were measured. Dynamic modulus of elasticity, based upon the resonant frequency induced in the flexural mode of vibration, was also determined for the composites and the components. A more detailed discussion of the experimental procedure employed in this investigation may be found in Ref. 11. RESULTS Room-temperature tensile tests were conducted on 3-, 5-, and 7-mil-diam tungsten wires which had been annealed for 1 hr at 2200°F and show the tensile strength of the wires to be 331,000, 327,000, and 290,000 psi, respectively. Since all the composites were infiltrated under these conditions, the strengths were considered to represent the strength of the fibers in the composites throughout this study. The average tensile strength of the annealed copper used as the matrix in this investigation was 27,800 psi. Results of room-temperature tensile tests on composites reinforced with 3-, 5-, or 7-mil-diam tungsten fibers are plotted as functions of composition in Fig. 1. These data represent previously reported datag,l0 as well as data more recently obtained. The line shown on each curve represents a prediction of tensile strength as a function of composition; the calculation of this line was explained in Refs. 9 and 10. A similar plot is presented in Fig. l(d) for composites reinforced with short-length, discontinuous 5-mil-diam tungsten fibers. The Menominee Range of northern Michigan was a major producer of direct shipping iron ore for nearly a century. When the last underground mine on the Range ceased operation in 1978, it marked the end of an era. For since the start of mining in the early 1880's the district has gone through a Lull cycle from the start-up of mining through close-down. During this period over 200 million long tons of iron ore were produced and shipped from nearly 100 mining operations. This development and production spanned the time from when the United States advanced from an essentially rural-agriculatural society through the industrial revolution and into the beginnings of the computer and space age. There are many lessons that can be learned from such a rich history. This report attempts to provide ouch a lesson. Through the use of case histories, deficiencies in past mining practices and mine closure procedures that have resulted in current mine related problems are documented. These problems -an be grouped into three areas; 1) subsidence 2) hydrological or drainage problems and 3) problems related to inadequate mine shaft sealing and capping practices.

"Xanthate is a sulfide collector that has been widely used in flotation for almost a century. It is inexpensive, easy to synthesize and apply, and produces good metallurgy in the right applications. However, a major drawback of xanthate is that it decomposes easily and generates CS2 gas in transportation, storage and operation, which can be harmful to human health. Also, excessive xanthate in tailings pond leads to toxicity of the process water and potential damages to aqua-life systems. New regulations in Ontario require that the TWA (time-weighted-average) value of CS2 in the work place is below 1 ppm, which is 1/10 of the previous limit. The stringent regulation may eventually sweep other regions of Canada with the increased awareness of healthy working conditions and environment protection. Therefore, it becomes very important to find xanthate replacements which will be “green”, i.e., environmentally friendly.In this research work, a systematic procedure is used for collector evaluation using the Sudbury nickel sulfide ores from Vale’s Ontario operations, starting with the collector properties (MSDS) evaluation, followed by batch flotation tests, miniplant tests, plant trials and economic evaluation. It is found that the most promising xanthate replacement is dithiocarbamate.INTRODUCTIONSulfide mineral flotation has been practiced since the early 20th century. Its industrial importance is well recognized as mineral concentrates from flotation can be economically smelted and refined to provide primary metals. Collectors play a vital role in froth flotation. There are reagents possessing both a polar group that binds them to the mineral surface and a nonpolar group that is oriented away from the surface to attach air bubbles. The introduction of xanthate as a sulfide collector in 1925 was a remarkable development in froth flotation (Keller, 1925). It is low cost, easy to synthesize, water soluble, simple to control in application. Most importantly, it has strong capability and usually good selectivity for sulfide mineral flotation, which have been keeping its application prominent for almost a century."

The North Shore Connector Project for the Port Authority of Allegheny County involves TBM mining a pair of subway tunnels through soil and rock under the Allegheny River and a narrow city street. Along the tunnel alignment are a historic building on shallow foundations and modern buildings on deep foundations, one constructed directly over the alignment during the latter phases of design. This paper provides an overview of the general site conditions, and technical basis for excavation support and tunneling decisions. Deformation limits, ground improvement, monitoring and mitigation plans, geotechnical baseline report development, and risk management will also be discussed.

"INTRODUCTION This report is the first of several dealing with the application of flotation methods for beneficiating the calcareous and siliceous red iron ores and ferruginous sandstones of the Birmingham district. The flotation study was part of a general investigation of the concentratability of various iron ores of Alabama and other Southeastern States undertaken by the Southern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Ala.Batch testing and pilot-plant flotation testing of the calcareous red ores of the Birmingham district have been in progress for several years, and although some phases of the study are not yet completed, enough data are available to indicate that many of the ores will yield marketable-grade concentrates with good recovery.The first flotation tests on the calcareous red ores employing conventional methods either the iron oxides or the siliceous gangue materials failed to give the desired results. The inferior separations obtained or prohibitive reagent requirements made the methods unattractive. Other more effective flotation methods were sought. A laboratory study of various reagents was undertaken. It resulted in the development of two attractive methods embracing anionic flotation of the activated siliceous gangue from the retarded iron oxides. The methods were similar in that fatty acid or soap-collecting agents were employed in strongly alkaline pulps to float the naturally activated quartz from the iron-ore pulps. The methods differed, however, in the addition agent employed to retard the hematite or hematite and calcite. By proper choice and quantity of the addition agent, the calcite could be floated with the quartz or retarded with the hematite as desired. Ability to recover or reject the calcite gives added flexibility to the separation. Although the methods have their limitations and cannot be considered ""cure-alls,"" they have given encouraging results on a number of calcareous red ores that heretofore proved difficult to concentrate by conventional flotation procedures."

Electric arc furnace (EAF) dust from the steel industries is listed by the United Sates EPA as a hazardous waste under the regulations of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act due to the presence of lead, cadmium and chromium. The disposal of the approximately 650,000 tons of EAF dust per year in the U.S. and Canada is an expensive and unresolved problem for the majority of steel companies. The Waelz process has been considered as the best process for treating EAF dust. A process model, combined thermodynamic modeling with heat transfer calculations, has been developed to simulate the chemical reactions, mass and heat transfer and heat balance in the kiln. The injection of air into the slag and the temperature profile along the kiln has been modeled. The effect of (CaO+MgO)/SiO2 on the solidus temperature of slag has been modeled also and discussed. Some optimizing results have been presented in this paper.

MAGNESIUM alloys usually are superheated before casting in order to ensure fineness of grain. Superheat temperatures in common use range from 1600° to 1700°F while the casting temperature, which depends upon the mold shape, is usually 200° to 300°F lower. The process of superheating requires considerable time and seriously shortens the life of the iron pots used. Recently it has been reported' that if acetylene, carbon dioxide or natural gas is bubbled through molten electrolytic A.S.T.M. No. 4 alloy at 1400°F. for 5 min., grain refinement equivalent to that of superheating will take place. Addition of certain solids such as graphite or aluminum carbide accomplishes the same results.2 As will be shown in this paper, it is possible to achieve grain refinement in magnesium casting alloys at low temperatures by mechanical stirring of the molten metal for a short time. This process was developed in the course of research work, supervised by the War Metallurgy Committee under the "Restricted" Project NRC-550, for the Office of Production Research and Development of the War Production Board. This paper, based on that work, has been released for publication by the O.P.R.D. MATERIALS AND METHODS The alloys studied were the most common American sand-casting alloys designated as No. 4 and No. 17 by the American Society for Testing Materials. The magnesium used in these alloys was of both carbothermic3 and electrolytic4 origin. Chemical analyses supplied by the producers are shown in Table I. Each heat consisted of approximately 5 lb. of alloy melted in a Tercod crucible. It was refined by fluxing with Permanente No. 7* refining flux at 1300° to 1350°F. After cooling to 1200' to 1250°F., portions of approximately one pound each were ladled into iron crucibles contained in an electric furnace at about 1250°F. The molten metal was covered with Permanente No. 21† covering flux and then heated to the temperature to be investigated. Normally each of the four portions was given a different treatment. In a typical case one portion was stirred vigorously for 5 min., acetylene gas was passed through a second portion for 5 min., a third portion was superheated to 1600°F for 15 min., then cooled to casting temperature, and the fourth was held for 5 min. at the temperature of stirring or gassing without other treatment. Each portion was then cast into one-inch diameter cylinders in three "nonturbulent" molds of identical shape. One mold was made of cast iron and the other two of baked sand. The disposal of large quantities of electronic scraps generated world wide is causing not only environmental problem but also loss of resources. Therefore, R & D efforts have been made to develop a suitable process for extraction and separation of metals viz. copper, zinc, cadmium and nickel expected from the leaching of e-scraps using solvent extraction process. Different process parameters viz. pH, aqueous to organic ratio, kinetics of extraction, extraction isotherm to establish stage requirement for extraction in continuous mode etc have been studied to optimise the condition for the separation of metals. The studies showed the selective extraction of copper after iron precipitation from the sulfuric acid leach solution of e- wastes containing ~1.0 g/L Cu and minor impurities with 2-hydroxy-5- nonylacetophenoneoxime (LIX 84) above pH 2.0 in single stage. A scheme for separation of cadmium, zinc and nickel has been proposed using di(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) under controlled pH of the aqueous solution. The order of extraction was found to be Zn> Cd> Ni.

THE four papers making up this symposum have been prepared espe-cially for those who have no knowledge of seismograph prospecting. To many people mathematics is a formidable subject, and many are discouraged from studying seismograph prospecting under the mistaken assumption that the mathematical requirements are severe. In the papers presented here there is not a single mathematical equation. We believe that considerable competence in dealing with some of the most important problems of this work can be attained without any mathe-matical training whatever. At the present time, there is a real need for interpretation of results by persons thoroughly competent to bring geologic experience and imagination to bear on data that are subject to multiple interpretation from a strictly physical viewpoint. Likewise, those charged with the responsibility of planning seismo-graph exploration campaigns would do well to become familiar with as . much as possible of the technical aspects of the work. They would then be in better position to judge of its success in individual cases. It has often been said that the seismograph is a new structure-finding tool for the geologists to use. The challenge; to design production facilities and in particular separation equipment which have the ability to deal effectively with the ever changing composition of well fluids, over the life time of the field in which it is operating, ensuring maximum uptime of the asset coupled with consistently effective separation. Design engineers are, however, continually confronted with a dilemma when selecting materials of construction for Oil/Gas separation equipment, since they are generally obliged to select an acceptable material of construction, based on ?predicted? operating conditions, at the lowest acceptable cost. Consequently many designs are somewhat basic and do not take into account the constantly varying dynamics of the well fluids being released into the separator. As oil fields mature, oil companies endeavour to maximize revenue by maintaining oil and gas throughputs. This often results in an associated increase in water and sand volumes and, in order to maintain efficient separation, an increase in operational temperature and pressure; subjecting the equipment to operational conditions for which it was never designed. In reality, therefore, the limitations and constraints placed upon new construction design often result in Maintenance Engineers having to solve the ensuing problems in difficult ?in-field? environments. Should refurbishment or upgrade be required then the status of the platform and that of the vessel during shutdown will dictate how this is achieved. Hotwork on the vessel is generally not preferred due to the requirement for post weld heat treatment and re-classification of the pressure vessel, not to mention the added risk in terms of safety. Unfortunately, until recently, there have been few alternatives to conventional ?hotwork? repair and protection systems, especially since the performance of cold curing polymer based repair and coating systems, for use in oil and gas process equipment, has, until recently, been limited by their resistance to temperature and pressure in immersed conditions. In line with the continued development of high temperature / high pressure oil and gas fields however, recent breakthroughs in polymer technology can now offer both repair and protection solutions which are able to function effectively at temperatures up to 180°C in immersed conditions combined with resistance to the destructive forces of explosive decompression from pressures in excess of 90 bar. This paper will look at recent work that has been undertaken to determine the suitability of modern polymer based repair and protection systems as an alternative to hotwork; thus enabling newly designed and upgraded internals to be cold bonded into position and further protected with temperature resistant coatings, in order to minimize the downtime of the asset and further to protect the vessel internals from the Erosive Corrosive environment.

"The paper describes the results of the study of gold-copper flotation concentrate atmospheric oxidation at different sizes of material, varying oxidation time, with air or oxygen blow. The study showed the low rate of sulphide oxidation during oxidation of flotation concentrate at a feed size (P98 -74 µm). The coppery recovery into solution was 48%; the recovery of gold by subsequent cyanidation reached 86%. Preliminary flotation concentrate grinding to P98 -20 µm provided oxidation of 90% of copper minerals, 80% of arsenopyrite and 15% of pyrite. The gold recovery by atmospheric oxidation of a fine-ground flotation concentrate increased by 59%, from 36% to 95%, the NaCN consumption reduced by 21 kg/t, from 30 to 9 kg/t. INTRODUCTION Processing of sulphide gold-copper ores and concentrates using conventional cyanidation technology results in higher reagent consumption and lower gold recovery. Destruction of sulphide minerals and extraction of copper from a processed product prior to cyanidation is essential for improving efficiency of precious metals recovery and reducing main reagents consumption. Atmospheric oxidation (AO) is one of the most promising hydrometallurgical methods of refractory gold-copper concentrates processing, along with biooxidation and pressure oxidation. The nature of this approach lies in oxidation of sulphides at 90-95°C, in acidic or alkaline conditions, with bubbling of oxygen or air, after preliminary ultrafine grinding (1-4). The following reactions of sulphide oxidation occur during atmospheric oxidation of a gold-copper flotation concentrate. Pyrite is oxidized with the formation of ferric sulphate (1) and elemental sulphur at low temperatures (2), whereas some portion of elemental sulphur reacts to form sulphuric acid: FeS2+3,75O2+0,5H2O=0,5Fe2(SO4)3+0,5H2SO4; ?G=-1144,02 kJ/mol (1)"

The objective of this contract was to develop a simple, reliable, economical, remote-control roof bolting module for installation of mechanical and resin bolts. It was to be capable of placing longer than seam height bolts, up to 10 ft lengths, from a seam height of 36 to 72 in., while keeping the operator under supported roof. The resulting machine, called REM-Bolter, is a low profile unit that utilizes Foster-Miller Flexible Shaft Roof Drill, a Bendix Roof Bolt Inserter and a newly designed. Roof Bolt Lifter/Torquer. Every effort was made to strike a compromise between complete automation and complete manual control. In a controlled laboratory environment the REM-Bolter remotely installed 1000 bolts. Subsequently the machine was tested in an operating coal mine where 500 holes were drilled (and an equal number of bolts were installed) remotely, over a 4 month period. The results of all tests Live shown that the operator of a machine of this kind can quickly, and repeatedly, install rootbolts remotely from his operator compartment some 8 ft away from the drilling/bolting action. The report includes recommendations for improvements to the present REM-Bolter design that would translate the present test bed into a second generation test bed and a potential first generation production unit.

Conceptually, the frequency should be selected to be the frequency of a simple sinusoidal wave that is used to approximate the blast vibration. In the literature, f is sometimes chosen as the dominant frequency (fdm) estimated from the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) of the blast vibration wave, on other occasions, f is chosen to be the principal frequency (fpr) from the vibration cycle with the peak vibration amplitude.
