Understanding of the diffusion problem has recently been furthered by the analysis of Birchenall and Meh1.l They pursued the problem of the variation of the diffusion coefficient with composition for non-ideal solid solutions. Their analysis follows the tradition of Wagner,l Jost, Dehlinger, and Darken & who assumed the net flux of diffusing material to be proportional to the gradient of a quantity related to free energy. The basic assumption in Birchenall and Mehl's formulation of the problem is that the net flux of diffusing material is proportional to a thermodynamic activity gradient. To estimate the applicability of the derived relations, they corrected the diffusion coefficients of carbon in austenite by utilizing Smith's6 activity data for carbon, and the diffusion coefficients for zinc in copper with activity data computed from the vapor pressure measurements of Har-greaves.' The corrected coefficients for carbon were virtually independent of carbon concentration. For the diffusion of zinc in copper a moderate variation of diffusion coefficient with concentration remained after the correction. The problem of diffusion can be formulated in another way than that used by Birchenall and Mehl. The method is that of chemical rate theory and has been used by Eyring and his coworkers8,9 as well as by Eyring and Zwolinskilo in a discussion to Birchenall and Mehl's paper. As yet the method has not been applied to substitu-tional solid solutions. On the basis of their assumptions, Eyring and Zwolinski derived a relation between the diffusion coefficient and activity that is identical with that of Dehlinger and Darken but which does not correct for the variation of the diffusion coefficient with concentration as well as does the relation derived by Birchenall and Mehl. It was thought that the theory of diffusion would be more complete if the inconsistency between the two analyses could be rationalized and if diffusion in substitu-tional alloys were analyzed on the basis of the concepts of the chemical rate theory. Technical advances in longwall mining over the last several years have resulted in much larger and faster shearers that have the capability of mining at speeds over 30 m/min (100 fpm). This has resulted in a substantial increase in the amount of dust that is generated at the shearer and during shield advances. Meanwhile, increased underground coal production has put a greater demand on longwall dust control systems as some operators have had difficulty maintaining consistent compliance with federal dust standards. To address this need, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is investigating the effectiveness of a water spray manifold mounted on the tailgate end of the shearer body. The sprays are oriented parallel to the tailgate ranging arm, and these sprays create a water curtain confining the dust plume near the face, preventing the dust from drifting into the walkway. This redirection of dust provides a clean air envelope for the tailgate shearer operator and jacksetters working near the tailgate drum. Three different tailgate spray manifold designs were tested and evaluated at the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) Pittsburgh Longwall Test Facility. Manifolds were equipped with hollow cone or flat fan water spray nozzles and evaluated at three face air velocities — 152, 213 and 274 m/min (500, 700 and 900 fpm)— and at water pressures of 689, 1,034 and 1,379 kPa (100, 150 and 200 psi). Reductions in dust concentrations were observed at six face sampling locations for all the tailgate manifold systems at each of the tested spray pressures and face velocities. Average reduction efficiencies of at least 90 percent were seen at the three sampling locations closest to the shearer for all three manifold systems at nozzle spray pressures greater than 689 kPa (100 psi). Based on results from the laboratory tests showing reductions in dust concentrations at sampling locations downwind of the shearer, a spray manifold was fabricated and evaluated at an underground operation.

Background- History The most significant change in mining since the late 1970?s has been the emergence of very large scale mining operations , which have been developed to ensure profitability with relatively low grade ores. These large tonnage operations have resulted in the development of larger unit sized machines in all operations of beneficiation, solid-liquid separation and dewatering. Often only a few flotation lines are installed and tonnages up to 25 ktpd and beyond are not uncommon. The increased throughputs have led to the development of circular, reactor type tank designs. The reactor cell system is the most up to date flotation cell design to utilise the principles of circular cell design. The Svedala DV mechanism was specially developed to suit the RCS machine giving good solids handling characteristics and excellent metallurgical performance. Development of UG2 ore type flotation equipment The equipment was developed and optimised by Svedala process from 1995. A higher energy specification was requested by industry. This amounted to 3kW/m3 for installed volume. Existing designs were at 1.5kW/m3. Hence various modifications were required to achieve the required power input. The first 50m3 machines were installed and developed at Impala Platinum?s UG2 circuit over a one year period. Once reliability and performance was achieved, over 300 large volume flotation cells were installed at Anglo Platinum and Lonmin operations as well. Pilot Plant Development The Impala Platinum High Energy pilot plant was commissioned in 2002 and had an installed power exceeding 5kW/m3. It was operated for over a year at the tailings dam booster station and was fundamental to the large scale scavenging plant design. All experience in overcoming mechanical and operational problems was applied in scale up design principles. A very robust mechanism was designed to accommodate the additional power input from installed motors, as well as the high SG (>1.5) of the feed source. The pilot plant flowsheet is shown in the figure below.

The Bureau of Mines has carried out experimental and theoretical studies with prilled and pulverized ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) mixtures containing varying amounts of fuel oil in an attempt to quantify the effects of stoichiometric composition, nonideal detonation behavior, and expansion volume on the production of CO, NO, and N02 fumes. Experimental fume measurements were obtained in the Bureau's large closed gallery facility (7.2 X 104 liter expansion chamber) and in the standard Crawshaw-Jones apparatus (90--liter expansion shamber) using a prepackaged charge configuration containing about 450 g of explosive.4 The theoretical calculation of toxic fumes was achieved with an equilibrium detonation code called "TIGER,," Contrary to initial expectations, the NOx (= NO + N02) fumes from the large gallery test were found to be in essential agreement with the Crawshaw-Jones results. It was also concluded that (1) "TIGER" calculations offer a good approach to the prediction of toxic fumes; (2) there is a basic problem in extrapolating laboratory measurements of CO fumes to mine conditions--this being due to postdetonation oxidation of CO to CO2; and (3) the detonation velocity decay rate of an explosive is a useful experimental parameter for correlating toxic fumes production with nonideal detonation behavior.

The Bureau of dines present, an economic evaluation of its process for the ferric chloride leaching of chalcopyrite concentrate. In this process, chalcopyrite concentrate is leached with ferric chloride solution to extract copper, which is precipitated from the solution by electrolysis while leaving sulfur in the residue. Spent liquor from electrolysis is treated with oxygen to regenerate the ferric chloride leach solution and the sulfur-laden residue is processed to recover the sulfur. A cost estimate was prepared for a plant capable of processing 600 tons of chalcopyrite concentrate per day, 330 days per year. The fixed capital cost, on an early 1.975 basis is $27,831,600 and the estimated operating cost is 9.9 cents, per pound of copper product. In comparison, the estimated operating cost of a smelter equipped with a citrate process plant to recover sulfur is about 13.6 cents per pound of copper product. No charge for chalcopyrite concentrate or credit for recovered byproducts has been included in either operating cost. The ferric chloride leach process, therefore, appears to be economically attractive.

Laser slapper detonators are the next generation detonator under development at the Detonations Systems Group at Los Alamos National Laboratory and function very similarly to an electrical slapper. A fiber optic transmits a laser pulse to ablate a thin metal film. This film, or flyer as it is commonly called, is launched through a short barrel to km/s speeds. The flyer shock loads or slaps a high density pressing of secondary explosive, setting off a detonation therein. Laser slapper detonators afford a number of safety advantages over other conventional detonators. Most important they require very high peak laser powers to operate, orders of magnitude larger than possible sources of natural or man-made accidental stimulus. Because light is transported over fiber optics, laser slappers avoid many of the electrical hazards associated with detonators. Use of insensitive, secondary explosives makes these detonators safer to handle, manufacture, transport, and deploy.

The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority is responsible for slopes along the Kaministiquia River, one of the largest tributaries to Lake Superior in Canada. After arresting toe erosion for a mile of riverbank, the remainder of the slope required stabilization to stop further crest regression and to protect the houses, street and services at the top. Stabilization of the 100 ft. high slope was tendered as design-build with a target safety factor of 1.3 and a design life of 75 years. The successful bid was a system of 1.4 inch diameter soil nails up to 40 feet long, installed perpendicular to the slope on a 3 to 5 foot grid. The conventional shotcrete facing was replaced with a ?green? biotechnical facing and special transverse plate heads on the nails. The key to keeping costs low proved to be installation with light equipment working on the slope, and driving the nails without drilling or grouting. Rather than tension, the design was based on bending in the nails, similar to a laterally loaded flexible pile. The paper describes the design and installation of this innovative system. The design is discussed in terms of soil properties, nail resistance as it varies with depth, failure modes, corrosion protection, root design and nail head design. Construction challenges are discussed. The system is compared to an adjacent anchored soldier pile wall built along the same slope 20 years ago. Post construction monitoring results confirm predicted performance.

Technical Papers, Mining Engineering Vol. 49, No. 12, pp. 70-75, Discussion by McIvor, R. and Fink, R. P. We must challenge what we consider to be dubious statements in the above-mentioned article. Much of what is reported was published elsewhere over a year ago (i.e., in their reference: Chi, G., Fuerstenau, M.C., Brandt, R.C. and Ghosh, A., 1996, "Improved comminution efficiency through controlled blasting during mining," International Journal of Min¬eral Processing, Vol. 47, p. 93). There is nothing unusual or significant about a 10% or more difference in grindability between two materials of apparently similar origin and other attributes (such as chemical assays, hardness and specific gravity). Consider also that: • the materials came from different locations in the pit; • only two sets of four blastholes were considered per blast: • spatial orientation with respect to the face and other blastholes was also altered; • only two pairs of data were collected; • the impact of sampling error and bias, • both of which could be significant in this case; and • normal experimental error in parameter measurement and calculation. It is clearly inappropriate to draw any conclusions with regard to cause-and-effect relationships without first presenting a thorough error analysis. A substantial number of randomly selected test and control areas might provide meaningful statistical evidence of the claimed effect of the variables being studied. Even that appears doubtful, however, because Figures 3 and 4 show about as much variation in crushing energy for the two "regular" conditions vs. regular and altered conditions. On a separate, but also important issue, broad experience with autogenous/semiautogenous milling has shown that smaller or weaker feed material results in reduced tonnage. ? Reply Thank you for the opportunity to respond to the comments of Messrs. Mclvor ant Fink. The points raised are addressed in the order of presentation. As the commenters noted, there are parallels between this article and a previous manuscript. The reason for these complementary articles is that the audiences for the two publications are different, although there is obviously some overlap. We believe that the different audiences each profit from the technical aspects of the two manuscripts. We are not in agreement that a grindability difference of 10% is insignificant. The laboratory work is corroborated by data obtained at plant scale, which confirms that an increase in throughput of the same magnitude (between 5% and 10%) is achieved when the blasting pattern is modified, i.e., reduced from 9 to 8 m (29.5 to 26.2 ft). This increase in throughput translates into substantial power savings for ore grinding. No differences in appearance in the rock were noted between the two adjacent areas. Rock in both areas belonged to the same rock mass/block, which was quite homogeneous and without geological features in between that could create drastic differences in comminution characteristics. Given the resources, we would have sampled from all of the holes. Additional data would certainly have been desirable, as would have been additional funding to expand the study. Their comment, "spatial orientation with respect to the face and other blastholes was also altered," is not clear. Figure 1 does not show the initiation sequence. Without the initiation sequence, we do not understand how the commenters concluded that spatial orientation with respect to the face and other blastholes was altered. As part of a national canvass of water use the Bureau of Mines compiled data on water requirements in the petroleum and natural gas industries for the calendar year 1962, specifically in well drilling, secondary-recovery operations, and natural gas processing plants. Total new water use in the petroleum industry of the United States, excluding refining, was 5.3 billion barrels. Secondary-recovery operations and natural gas processing plants required about 2.5 billion barrels of new water input; each of these requirements was about eight times greater than that for well drilling. Total use, including recirculated water, was 45.3 billion barrels of which 3.4 billion barrels was consumed. The greatest use of recirculated water was for natural gas processing, amounting to 38.2 billion barrels. Projections of total water use show that by 1975, 75.4 billion barrels will be used by the petroleum industry, of which 10.2 billion barrels will be new water. By 1985, the total use requirement will be 92.8 billion barrels, of which 13.1 billion barrels will be new water.

"This paper summarizes research into the study of the control of flotation processes based on froth images. The use of numerical image analysis techniques for the extraction of significant patterns (froth structure and colour) from industrial flotation froths is discussed.First, the froth was analysed by the use of the Multivariate Image Analysis (MIA) method to extract the spectral variation contained in a RBG image. The Partial Least Squares (PLS) was applied to develop the empirical model for the prediction of froth grade. The results of this application are illustrated using one industrial case study.Second, the froth was also analysed by Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) and Wavelet Transform Analysis (WTA) to extract features related more to morphological aspects. Since there is useful information hidden in froth texture, these methods are used as texture descriptor to classify different types of froths.Third, a control strategy based on a froth structure indicator was developed and implemented on an industrial zinc flotation circuit. The feedback controller uses a reagent flow-rate in order to maintain the froth structure at its set point. Process improvements obtained with the implemented control strategy are highlighted.Finally, the feasibility to implement a hybrid control strategy consisting in a froth structure supervision controller based on the froth concentrate grade estimated by MIA and recovery inferred by image analysis is discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe development of control strategies to achieve satisfactory control performance has always been a great challenge for engineers and the need for improved process diagnosis, control and optimization has become more and more evident for the mineral processing industry in the last decades. That is why new process variables need to be measured particularly in highly multivariable processes such as flotation. This industrial process is subject to a wide variety of disturbances mainly generated by frequent and sometimes abrupt changes in physical and/or chemical ore characteristics and also, due to some irregularities in manual process operating procedures. This is the final report for Research Contract No. 00101300 (Min. 34) granted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to the University of Idaho Mining Research Bureau. The research project is entitled "Development of Improved Ventilation Technology for Non-coal Mines and Other Underground Excavations.' The duration of the project was six calendar months, from 16 April to 16 October 1970. The budgeted cost was $34,867.00 of which $31,953.00 was to be furnished by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The sequence of reporting that follows is to state the objectives as contracted, outline the program of investigation, highlight briefly the important technological factors peculiar to vein-type metal mine ventilation, and describe the normal methods of control. This is followed by the results achieved by the survey, and an itemization of the observed deficiencies in current technology. There follows a section dealing with the adopted Federal Regulations.

The use of aquatic plants for the removal of heavy metals from wastewater has gained high interest. In this study, batch experiments were conducted to evaluate the adsorption of copper ions in aqueous solution by P. pectinatus L. under various conditions of contact time, initial pH of the solution, metal concentration and adsorbent dosage. The results showed that the maximum adsorption amount of copper ions by P. pectinatus L. was 22.60 mg/g when the initial copper ions concentration was 98.41 mg/L at pH 4.5. The Langmuir and Freundlich models were used to describe the adsorption equilibrium of copper ions on P. pectinatus L. and the adsorption followed the Langmuir isotherm. The adsorption kinetic was well-fitted with pseudo-second-order sorption equations.

UNTIL very recently, the commercial availability of the rare earths as metals has been very limited. Fabrication of mill products from these metals has not been studied in most cases. This note reports the results of the development of fabrication techniques for thulium. Thulium has a melting point of about 1550°C and a hexagonal close-packed crystal structure. It oxidizes in air to give a black oxide (TmzO,). The procedures for producing thin thulium foil were developed on one ingot weighing about 220 g and were subsequently applied in processing about a pound of metal to foil. Several alternates for the various fabrication steps were investigated and will be discussed. The metal fabricated was in the form of commercial chill-cast ingots 1 in. in diam and 2 in. long weighing approximately 220 g. Impurities in the ingots were reported by the vendor to be 4000 ppni tantalum, 2000 ppm calcium, 200 ppm nickel, 100 to 200 ppm iron, 100 ppm europium, and less than 100 ppm copper, lutetium, and ytterbium. In addition to these impurities, several salt-like inclusions as large as l/8 in. in diam were revealed along the center line of the one ingot sectioned. Preliminary tests indicated that small wafers cut from the as-cast ingot would not fabricate readily by rolling. Forging of copper-jacketed wafers was therefore attempted. At 1550"F forging was satisfactory but an apparent reaction of copper with thulium demanded investigation of lower temperatures. Therefore, the remainder of the test ingot was forged at 1450°F—with only minor cracking. All ingots forged were inserted into copper tubes of 1 in. 1D and 0.125-in. wall thickness. The jackets were sealed by flattening the ends of the tubes and welding under helium. Heating time at 1450°F was 30 min. Press forgings of 1/8 in. per pass were used, followed by 10 min reheats. When the ingots had been squared and reduced to 0.250 in. in thickness, the original copper jacket was stripped off and replaced by a new jacket in preparation for hot rolling. Hot rolling at 1450" F without edge cracking was readily accomplished after forging. Excellent results were obtained with 10 pct reductions of thickness followed by 5 to 10 min reheats. After reduction of thickness from 0.250 to 0.100 in. the copper jacket was removed. It was found, in fact, that hot rolling in air was possible. A tenacious black oxide similar to that seen on zirconium was formed during 3 min reheats at 1450°F. Reduction in air to 0.010 in. foil was possible taking 10 pct reductions per pass. The oxide coat formed during hot rolling in air could best be removed by sand blasting and pickling. Common pickling solutions containing polar solvents were found to attack the metal too rapidly and a concentrated nitric-hydrofluoric acid mixture attacked neither the oxide nor the metal. The most satisfactory pickling solution was 52 vol pct concentrated nitric acid-48 vol pct glacial acetic acid. After forging to 0.250 in., vacuum annealing and cold rolling was found to be another satisfactory alternate to hot rolling in copper jackets. After forging. a hardness of Rockwell B76 was found. Annealing in vacuum (2 X l0-5 mm of Hg) for 1 hr at 1200"F did not alter this value. Annealing at 1470"F for 1 hr brought the hardness down to R;]63. With cold rolling (5 pct per pass) the hardness returned to about R,1:76 after 20 pct reduction and edge cracking became noticeable. However, cold rolling to a total of 40 pct reduction in thickness (RI,,83) was possible before edge crack propagation became serious. Good surface finish was obtained, and the metal loss due to oxidation was minimized by cold rolling and vacuum annealing. Using this procedure the yield of 1.25 in. wide by 0.010 in. thick foil from a 1-in. diam ingot was about 40 pct.

As part of its overall program of coal carbonization, the Bureau of Mines is studying the coking properties of coals that may be used for metallurgical purposes. The objectives of this study were given in detail in a previous report.2/ The suitability of coal for metallurgical use depends primarily on (1) chemical composition, (2) preparation characteristics, and (3) carbonization behavior. The first two factors, as well as the available reserves, are considered in selecting coals for carbonization tests. Currently, Kanieri Gold Dredging Limited operates the only large scale gold dredging operation in New Zealand. It dredges a claim in the Taramakau River using the bucket dredge 'Kanieri'. This dredge, a 'Yuba' type, was designed and built in the 1930s. On the current claim it works about 12 hectares of ground a year. Because of its design, the tailings from the 'Kanieri' make land restoration difficult. This was unimportant until it commenced its new claim ML-32-310 in 1978. The conditions, attached to this licence required it to restore the land for afforestation, the designated use fur the Crown land being mined. With the company planning to work future claims on the Grey River, it decided to undertake restoration work on the Taramakau to demonstrate its capability of establishing pasture land on tailings, a more difficult task than restoring the land for afforestation. After two years and the restoration of two blocks totalling 22 hectares, reasonable pasture establishment has been achieved. Much has been learned to date and further refinement of the techniques used will take place over the next two years. The quality of the tailings produced has improved as a result of the limited modifications possible on the existing dredge. This has been significant in achieving better results. The knowledge gained will be taken into account in future dredge design. Both the Company and its Consultant are confident of achieving satisfactory restoration of dredge tailings for pasture land.

Ore and concentrate are transported on, the surface at western mining districts by (1) railroads, (2) surface trams, (3) aerial trams, (4) trucks, and (5) wagons, and (6) on the backs of animals. The daily and ultimate tonnage to be moved is the principal factor governing the selection of the method of transportation. Railroads are preferred when large tonnages are to be hauled over relatively long distances. The mine-haulage system may be extended or surface trams built to the mill or shipping point if a practical track grade is possible and if the distance is relatively short. Aerial trams have a special field of usefulness for transportation over steep or excessively rough terrain.

Nanosize model gold particles with varying size were fabricated by deposition of a 10 nm thick gold film onto SiO2/Si(100) substrate by electron beam evaporation followed by modification using low energy Ar+ ion bombardment. The change in particle size were monitored by the Au 5d valence band states determined by ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS). The gold/iron oxide interface was studied by iron oxide deposition on gold. It was found that the energy profile of Au 5d valence band states are strongly redistributed with decreasing the gold particle size mostly affecting at the lowest and at the highest binding energies. The size effect in the UPS spectra can be interpreted by the energy redistribution rather, than by narrowing the 5d states. The iron oxide deposition increases the catalytic activity in CO oxidation whether it is on gold nanoparticles or on a continuous 80 nm thick gold film. The activity enhancement is significantly larger in case of gold nanoparticles. The interface interaction is operative in enlargement of the catalytic activity even if gold particles are not exposed to the surface, but they are located below the iron oxide layer.
