Heavy mineral deposits have been known from Liberia since the1950s from both river and beach placers. The heavy mineral content of beach sands ranges between 28?62% and the suite includes ilmenite, rutile, zircon and magnetite. These occur together with kyanite, sillimanite, staurolite and garnet. The average ilmenite content is 82% with minor zircon (11%), rutile (6%) and monazite (1%). The ilmenite is, however, of poor quality with haematite intergrowths and a titanium content ranging from10?42.4% (average ±25% TiO2). The amounts of rutile and zircon, while of suitable quality, have also previously been deemed too low for economic exploitation.

The torsion effusion method has been used to measure the vapor pressure of thallium over pure thallium in the temperature range 931" to 996'k The resulting 100 cal per g-atom is in excellent agreement with previous values. Vapor pressures of T1 above seven Ag-Tl alloys ranging from 33 to 90 at. pct T1 were measured at 979K. Calculated silver activities show a positive deviation from Raoult's law, approaching ideality near the liquidus. Measured thallium activities scatter less than previous measurements using the electromotive force technique. Values for the silver component were calculated by Gibbs-Duhem integration. This paper reports the results of a study of the liquid Ag-T1 system by the torsion effusion method. The method has been discussed in detail previously1 and will be only briefly summarized here. The sample is contained in a cell which is suspended on a torsion wire. Vapors effusing from orifices on opposite sides of the cell exert a torque on the wire. The torque is related to the vapor pressure by the following relation: where D is the torsion constant of the wire, 4 the angle of torque, fl and f2 the correction factors determined by Freeman and seamy2 to account for orifice length, a1 and a2 the areas of the orifices, and ql and q2 the distances of the orifices from the axis of rotation. By using the same cell for pure thallium and the alloy, it follows that: so that most systematic errors are eliminated in determining the activities. EXPERIMENTAL 99.999+ pct T1 was obtained from the American Smelting and Refining Co. and 99.999 pct Ag was obtained from Cominco American, Inc. Seven Ag-T1 alloys, ranging in composition from x^\ = 0.33 to 0.90, were prepared by melting together weighed amounts of the pure metals in sealed, evacuated Vycor tubes and quenching the melts in water. The apparatus and graphite cells were the same as those used by Hawkins and Hultgren3 in their study of the Pb-Sn system. RESULTS Ten measurements were made on pure thallium in the temperature range 931" to 996K, and the results are presented in Table I. Values of were calculated using tabulated Gibbs (free) energy functions.4 No dependence of on temperature or orifice size was found, indicating that equilibrium was attained. Data for the Ag-T1 alloys are shown in Table 11. Values were smoothed with respect to composition by a plot of where . DISCUSSION The value = 43,520 * 100 cal per g-atom for pure thallium (95 pct uncertainty limit) is in excellent agreement with previous investigations.4 In the Ag-T1 system, this study shows positive deviations from Raoult's law at all compositions. Fig. l gives the phase diagram according to Hansen, and Fig. 2 presents the activity values measured in this study as well as those from electromotive force measurements at 950°K by Terpilowski, Kundys, and slaby.'

The fourth Teetered Bed Separator (TBS) has just been installed in Australia, and trials have been run in many sites. There is a growing recognition of the potential advantages of using TBS technology to treat coal in the ?3+0.25 mm size range, at cut points below 1.60. From these activities, there has been a substantial growth in knowledge with respect to application engineering and operational functions. The paper briefly describes the installations, including flowsheets, and so provides a background to the potential deployment of TBS technology. There are a large number of potential applications for TBS technology, including treatment of fine ROM coal in new plants, or in upgrade situations for re-processing of spiral product, or scavenging coal from coarse tailings. As well, cost effective capacity upgrades are possible by using TBS units for treating the sands size fraction. Issues arising from Australian TBS installations and application engineering are also discussed.

"PEC uranium deposit, 100 km southwest of Coppermine, was discovered by diamond drilling in 1976 following ground and airborne geophysical surveys, geological mapping, geochemical surveys and boulder prospecting that were initiated as the result of the discovery of uraniferous sandstone outcrops in 1969 by geologists of Aquitaine Company of Canada Ltd.The deposit is within gently northeasterly dipping medium to coarse-grained Unit 11 quartzitic sandstone of Neohelikian Dismal Lakes Group. The deposit is from 10 m to 70 m above the base of the sandstone which, beneath the deposit, non-conformably overlies weathered and altered Aphebian granite of Great Bear Batholith or unconformably overlies rubble breccia, conglomerate and medium-grained Unit 8 sandstone of Paleohelikian Hornby Bay Group.A northeasterly trending, 500 m wide graben, bounded by the steeply dipping northeasterly striking Imperial and Aquitaine faults, contains the deposit which is 1.1 km long by up to 340 m wide. The deposit overlies a post-Hornby Bay Group, pre-Dismal Lakes Group topographic high. Uranium principally occurs as stratabound, often peneconcordant bands; a lesser amount of uranium is fracture controlled.Stratabound uranium exists in gently easterly dipping, subparallel bands ranging in thickness from 1.5 m to 6.0 m. Pitchblende, coffinite and sooty black uranium oxides occur as interstitial disseminations and grain coatings subparallel to bedding; they also replace pyrite and form narrow veinlets.Small amounts of torbernite, carnotite and cuprosklodowskite coat pitchblende and are disseminated within mineralized bands. Pyrite, marcasite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite, cove/lite, digenite, azurite, malachite, arsenopyrite, glaucodot, niccolite, bravoite (? ), goethite, hematite and magnetite as well as quartz, barite, calcite, biotite, chlorite and clay minerals exist within the mineralized bands. Uranium grades of 0.1 % to 0.3 % U3O8 over thicknesses of 1 m to 2 m are typical.A steeply dipping fracture zone near the Imperial fault contains sooty black uranium oxides, torbernite, carnotite and cuprosklowdowskite as well as sulphides, cobalt arsenides, quartz and carbonate. The zone may reach 70 m long; its true width is about 1.9 m. Uranium grades range up to 5.18% up, over0.9m.Pitchblende and coffinite from PEC deposit have been dated at 1.08 ± .10 Ga with possible remobilization at .45 Ga. The deposit contains an inferred 3,150 tonnes of U3O8."

This report, sponsored by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, presents the results of an examination of the safety of the impactor shaft sinking system in comparison to conventional shaft sinking technology. Detailed study of the impactor system was also performed to identify and recommend design changes for optimum safety conditions. A comparison of the impactor machine and its support systems with conventional shaft sinking was made on the basis of relative risk levels. Risk incorporates measures of both the frequency and the potential consequence of accidents. A safety evaluation of the com¬ponent operations of the impactor shaft sinking system was performed using a Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) methodology. The results of this analysis show generally that the impactor shaft sinking system is safer than conventional shaft sinking. The potential risk of conventional shaft sinking operations could be reduced by an average of over 35 percent with use of the impactor shaft sinking system. Design change recommendations to further improve the safety of the impactor system include a revised fire suppression system, improved access to and from the operator cabs, reliable noise attenuation measures and improved communication systems. An operational safety manual was also developed for the impactor shaft sinking system.

Samples weighing O·25 g are fused with 1 g potassium hydrogen sulphate, leached with 5 ml. of hydrochloric acid, and then diluted with another 5 ml. of acid. After settling, an aliquot of the clear solution is reduced with stannous chloride, and then a zinc dithiol solution is added to form a coloured tungsten complex which is extracted with petroleum spirit for comparison with standards.Concentrations down to 4 p.p.m. may be analysed at a rate of 100 determinations per man-day of 8 hr.

Synthetic rock with predictable porosity and permeability has been Prepared from mixtures of sand, cement and water. Three series of mixes were investigated primarily for the relation between porosity and permeability for certain grain sizes and proportions. Synthetic rock prepared of 65 per cent large grains, 27 per cent small grains and 8 per cent Portland cement, gave measurable results ranging in porosity from 22.5 to 40 per cent and in permeability from 0.1 darcies to 6 darcies. This variation in porosity and permeability was caused by varying the amount of blending water. Drainage-cycle relative permeability characteristics of the synthetic rock were similar to those of natural reservoir rock. INTRODUCTION The fundamental behavior characteristics of fluids flowing through porous media have been described in the literature. Practical application of these flow characteristics to field conditions is too complicated except where assumptions are overly simplified. The use of dimensionally scaled models to simulate oil reservoirs has been described in the literature. 1-3 These and other papers have presented the theoretical and experimental justification for model design. Others have presented elements of model construction and their operation. In most investigations the porous media have consisted of either u ncon soli da ted sand, glass beads, broken glass or plastic-impregnated granular substances—materials in which the flow behavior is not identical to that in natural reservoir rock. The relative permeability curves for unconsoli-dated sands differ from those for consolidated sandstone. The effect of saturation history on relative permeability measurements is discussed by Geffen, et a1.4 Wyga15 has shown quite conclusively that a process of artificial cementation can be used to render un consolidated packs into synthetic sandstones having properties similar to those of natural rock. Many theoretical and experimental studies have been made in attempts to determine the structure and properties of unconsolidated sand, the most notable being by Naar and Wygal.6 Others have theorized and experimented with the fundamental characteristics of reservoir rocks. This study was conducted to determine if some general relationship could be established between the size of sand grains and the porosity and permeability in consolidated binary packs. This paper presents the results obtained by changing some of the factors which affect the porosity and permeability of synthetically prepared sandstone. In addition, drainage relative permeability curves are presented. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Mixtures of Portland cement with water and aggregate generally are designed to have certain characteristics, but essentially all are planned to be impervious to water or other liquids. Synthetic sandstone simulating oil reservoir rock, however, must be designed to have a given permeability (sometimes several darcies), a porosity which is primarily the effective porosity but quantitatively similar to natural rock, and other characteristics comparable to reservoir rock, such as wettability, pore geometry, tortuosity, etc. Unconsolidated ternary mixtures of spheres gave both a theoretically computed and an experimentally observed minimum porosity of about 25 per cent.7 By using a particle-distribution system, one-size particle packs had reproducible porosities in the reproducible range of 35 to 37 per cent.6 For model reservoir studies of the prototype system, a synthetic rock having a porosity of 25 per cent or less and a permeability of 2 darcies was required. The rock had to be uniform and competent enough to handle. Synthetic sandstone cores were prepared utilizing the technique developed by Wygal.5 Some slight variations in the procedure were incorporated. The sand was sieved through U. S. Standard sieves. The economical recovery of the valuable constituents from the effluent of gas-con-densate wells has developed into a problem of balancing the cost of recovery against the cost of compressing the residual gas back into the formation. A possible method of extracting the gasoline and distillate from the natural gas is by oil absorption at high pressures. In order to design and evaluate an absorption plant, fundamental data on the composition of the coexisting hydro- carbon vapor and liquid phases at various temperatures and pressures are essential. A review of the literature indicated that the necessary data for the design of such plants are lacking. The nearest approach to desired published data is that of Katz and Hackmuth,~ who experimentally deter-mined the composition of the coexisting vapor and liquid phases in a natural gas-crude oil system at pressures up to 3000 lb. per sq. in. and at temperatures from 40' to zoo°F. This paper presents the results of the experimental determination of the equilib-rium distribution of the hydrocarbons methane through hexane between natural gas and a typical absorber oil. The ranges of temperature and pressure chosen were from 33' to r8oUF. and from 100 to 5000 lb. per sq. inch. Materials The absorber oil was a typical naturally occurring, Straw-colored distillate that had previously been steam-distilled to an initial boiling point of 300 F. The physical and chemical properties, including the results of an Engler distillation, are presented in Table I. The propane, isobutane, wbu-tane, isopentane and n-pentane were ob-ta,ined from the Philgas Department of the Phillips Petroleum Co. Certified analyses of these compounds showed their purity to be in excess of 99.5 per cent and they were riot further purified.

"Phosphorus slag is the most heavy-tonnage waste of yellow phosphorus production, which is stored in the dump fields for many years creating ecological problems in the regions. Despite of the actions taken to utilize the slags, most of them remain in the slag disposal area. One of the relevant and priority directions is rare-earth metals production (REMs), presence of which in the phosphorus slags allows considering the latter as an acceptable raw material source. Phosphorus slags contain about 30–40 wt% of silicon dioxide, therefore they can serve as a source of production of precipitated silicon dioxide highly required in different industries.The purpose of this work is the most complete REMs recovery in the solution while leaching and subsequent processing of siliceous cake. The work shows results of researches on establishment of the chemical and phase compositions of phosphorus slags, determination of the forms of presence therein of REMs compounds, processes of phosphorus slag leaching by nitric acid and processing of produced siliceous cake by NaOH solution.Based on the data of the instrumental and chemical methods of phosphorus slag analysis, it was established that it consists of pseudowollastonite a-CaSiO3 for 90–92%. It was found out that REMs are present in it in the form of carbonate apatite Ca10(PO4)6CO3 or rare earth apatite, and La2S3 compound inclusions.Optimum parameters of phosphorus slag leaching process were selected: HNO3 concentration 7- 7.5 mol/L; L/S ratio = 2.6–3 mL/g; temperature – 50–80o?; duration – 1 h; pulp stirring – 500 rpm. Recovery of SREMs, CaO, Al2O3 and Fe2O3 into the solution were achieved at 98.0, 99.1, 99.0 and 18.8%, respectively. Presence of 10 elements of the rare earths group in the phosphorus slag was established. It was found out that recovery of almost all REMs is within ~92–99%, except for Sc and Lu – ~39% and ~28%, respectively.For the purpose of optimization of siliceous cake leaching by NaOH solution, influence of some physical and chemical parameters was studied: N?O? concentration, L/S ratio, temperature, and duration. Results of the experimental data will serve as a basis for development of the technology of complex processing of the technological waste of phosphorus industry with production of REMs concentrate and precipitated silicon dioxide."

The objective of this study was two-fold: 1. To perform a world literature search pertinent to the analysis, selection and design of hoisting systems and their components and to codify the search into a literature compendium. The search resulted in a technical data file of over 1500 hard copy items. The compendium index was also suitable for establishing a comprehensive computer-loaded data base on the subject. 2. To develop a comprehensive system of guidelines to cover salient aspects of analysis, selection and design of electrical, mechanical and structural components of a hoisting system with a view to establish parameters for maximum safety and efficiency of operation, installation and revision of the system. 3. Considerations in the mine shaft layout, design, sinking, outfitting, testing and commissioning are set forth against the background of requirements of applicable parts of Code of Federal Regulations, Title 30.

The Bureau of Mines conducted underground mapping and rock strength tests to describe and analyze mine roof conditions surrounding ancient stream channel deposits (paleochannels) in the Pittsburgh Coalbed in southwestern Pennsylvania. Paleochannels in the study mine consist of sandstone and/or siltstone and affect the Pittsburgh Coalbed through erosion and/or differential compaction. Differentially compacted sediments within and adjacent to channel deposits caused slip planes, faults, clay-dike faults, clastic dikes (clay veins), coalbed rolls, and slumped structures. Paleochannels can be predicted by recognizing these features and associated sediments, which allows for modification of long-and short-term mine planning and development. Mine entries located beneath the paleochannel deposits exhibit less stable roof conditions than entries with normal (nonchannel) roof. Paleochannel deposits comprise only one-fourth of the mapped study area; however, they contain one-half of the hazardous roof. This study deter-mined that rock strength evaluations, including rock quality designation (RQD), unconfined uniaxial compressive strength testing, and point-load testing, must be accompanied by underground observations. Suggested remedial support techniques include angled and/or longer tensioned bolts, steel mats or crossbars, steel sets or cribbing, and roof trusses.

"The Similkameen Mining Company property is situated about 9 1/2 miles south and west of Princeton B.C. Owned and operated by Newmont Mining Corporation, mining is presently taking place in the Ingerbelle pit. At 15,000 tpd of 0.50% Cu ore the Ingerbelle pit is sufficient for about 8 years. Another 8 years ore supply is available from the old Granby workings of the Copper Mountain property which operated from 1927 to 1957.The pit operations commenced in late 1970 with the concentrator starting in March 1972. Designed and built by Bechtel Corporation under the supervision of Newmont the concentrator's design was based on single-stage crushing and single-stage modified autogenous grinding. The modification was installation of a crusher to crush the critical size build-up. The description of the operation follows.CRUSHERThe primary crusher is an open pocket Allis-Chalmers. 54"" x 74"" gyratory. The basic closed side setting is 8"". The crusher is fed from one side with 100 ton Electra-haul trucks. The crusher pocket discharges to a 96"" wide conveyor belt, then to a 48"" conveyor system including a stacker belt. The crushed product is piled on a stockpile with a capacity of about 30,000 live tons. This stockpile feeds the concentrator."

Seismic tomography, as used in mining, is based on the principle that highly stressed rock will demonstrate relatively higher P-wave velocities than rock under less stress. A decrease or increase in stress over time can be verified by comparing successive tomograms. Personnel at the Spokane Research Center have been investigating the use of seismic tomography to identify stress in remnant ore pillars in deep (greater than 1220 m) underground mines. In this process, three-dimensional seismic surveys are conducted in a pillar between mine levels. A sledgehammer is used to generate P-waves, which are recorded by geophones connected to a stacking signal seismograph capable of collecting and storing the P-wave data. Travel times are input into a spreadsheet, and apparent velocities are then generated and merged into imaging software. Mine workings are superimposed over apparent P-wave velocity contours to generate a final tomographic image. Results of a seismic tomographic survey at the Sunshine Mine, Kellogg, ID, indicate that low- velocity areas (low stress) are associated with mine workings and high-velocity areas (higher stress) are associated with areas where no mining has taken place. A high stress gradient was identified in an area where ground failed. From this tomographic survey, as well as four earlier surveys at other deep underground mines, a method was developed to identify relative stress in remnant ore pillars. This information is useful in making decisions about miner safety when mining such ore pillars.

Outotec has performed numerous research and development projects and various surveys in the study of reverse iron ore flotation. Over the past four years their TankCell-70 and TankCell-160 flotation cells at the Germano concentrator of Samarco in Brazil were extensively surveyed. These surveys have revealed some extreme operating conditions in reverse iron ore flotation and are the subject of this paper. Some of the findings include large variations in the content of solids in the various flotation stages. At the bottom of the cleaner cells, the content of solids by weight reached over 60 per cent, whereas at the bottom of the scavenger cell this was less than 50 per cent. Froth carry rates were also significantly different in the various flotation stages. In the case of coarse material, the scavenger cells operated at a froth carry rate of over 40 t/h.m2. With fine material, however, froth carry rates of less than 10 t/h.m2 were measured. High froth carry rates caused significant changes in the residence times at Samarco. In the rougher cells, the fifth cell had more than double the residence time of the first cell. This was even more pronounced with the scavenger cells, where the second cell had more than triple the residence time of the first cell. High froth carry rates also caused losses in iron recovery. As a consequence of such findings, it appears that different rules apply in the sizing of reverse flotation circuits compared to direct flotation circuits. Different operating parameters (mixing intensities and air flow rates) must also be used in the rougher, cleaner and scavenger cells in order to optimise the metallurgical performance. A systematic study of groundwater conditions at eight underground mine sites exhibiting a wide range of groundwater qualities throughout Australia has been completed at the WA School of Mines. This has resulted in a new corrosivity classification for groundwater driven corrosion processes for cement grouted cable strand used in the Australian underground mining industry. The new corrosivity classification is simple to use and corrosion rates may be predicted from readily obtained in situ measurements of groundwater dissolved oxygen.

This Bureau of Mines report describes a shaft closure demonstration project in which 11 inverted pyramid-shaped plugs were used to plug abandoned open mine shafts in Galena, KS, The inverted pyramid-shaped forms, fabricated from steelplate, were designed so that the inverted base would be larger, by 4 ft on a side, than the approximate size of the shaft opening at the surface residuum-solid rock interface. After the surface openings of the shafts were trimmed with a backhoe, the steel forms, complete with reinforcing, were lowered into the openings and filled with concrete; the remaining portions of the openings above the plugs were backfilled to slightly above the surrounding surface level with waste rock and soil. Location and elevation monuments were installed for long-tern evaluation of the success of the project.

El sostenimiento de las labores en las operaciones mineras, son cada vez más consistente y seguros con la aplicación del concreto lanzado, en la unidad minera cerro lindo se ha migrado a este tipo de sostenimiento en un 100%. Todas nuestras labores están sostenidas con shotcrete, incluso el frente de la labor aplicamos el sostenimiento con shotcrete, que llamamos malla de sacrificio, sin embargo este tipo de sostenimiento es costoso, pero te da muchas facilidades para mejorar los rendimientos y se hace más segura la mina, para lo cual contamos con una planta de concreto exclusivamente para este servicio, con una capacidad de 30 m3 por hora, lo que necesita la mina es 7000 m3 mensuales para cubrir todas la labores de producción, preparación y desarrollo, incluso hemos considerado la labores de rehabilitación y resanes por la misma operación minera, esta operación nos da una demanda de 9 mixcrets en operación y un stand by, con 4 alphas operativos y 1 en stand by.
