Gold recovered on the strikes at the Central Norseman mill, Norseman, Western Australia, has an approximate assay fineness of 850. Bullion recovered from the cyanide plant at the mine is of much lower value, and occasionally its assay fineness has been as low as 250. This indicates either that the fine gold particles in the ore consist of an alloy richer in silver than the coarse particles or else that a silver mineral, as well as the gold, is dissolved by the cyanide solutions.It had been observed at the mine that the amount of silver in the bullion appeared to increase when galena appeared to be more abundant in the stoped ore. Interest was, therefore, attached to the possible occurrence of a silver mineral associated with galena and, at the same time, soluble in cyanide.Four specimens of ore from different horizons in the mine were collected by the mine staff for examination as to whether any marked difference in the fineness of gold was apparent on a polished surface and for determination of the silver minerals. As the Norseman ore-body is a quartz reef containing a very small percentage of sulphide, the specimens were selected either because they cont;:lined free gold or because they were, relatively rich in sulphides. They were obtained from the following localities at the Phoenix shaft.1. Level 16, section 28.2. Level 16, section 31.3. Level 8, section 31.4. Level 14, section 38.Specimens Nos. 1 and 2 were thus obtained from different positions at the same mining horizon, while specimens Nos 2 and 3 were obtained from different levels in the same vertical section of the mine.All the specimens consist of quartz characterized by thin, discontinuous seams of sericite and the presence of a little ankerite. Gold and sulphides tend to be localized along these seams, but particles of gold and sulphides are also scattered throughout areas of white quartz. This scattered distribution of the sulphides in relatively wide areas of quartz has involved the preparation of two or more polished sections from each specimen.The outcome of the microscopical examination of these specimens has been to determine that there is no appreciable variation in the colour of the polished particles of gold and, therefore, no marked difference in the amount of silver alloyed with the coarse and fine particles. The presence of small quantities of the tellurides sylvanite, hessite and altaite has been revealed, and found to vary in abundance with the abundance of galena.

"Electron spin resonance (ESR) spin trapping experiments have been carried out to investigate the mechanism of sulfite oxidation em¬ploying 5,5-dimethyl-l-pyrroline-1-oxide (DMPO) as a spin trap. The results show that sulfite autoxidation, catalyzed by Mn(II), involves not only the SO-3 radicals but also the •OH radicals. An addition of H2 02 to the sulfite aqueous medium significantly increases the •OH radical formation. This result provides new clues to the chemical mechanism of the sulfite oxidation and the sulfite toxicity.INTRODUCTIONStudies of the oxidation of the sulfite (SO 2-/3) ions under various conditions are of high current interest because excessive exposure to sulfite is toxic and the origin of this toxicity seems to involve sulfite oxidative pathways [1]. An important fact is that human exposure to sulfite is on the increase [1,2]. Some of the increase in the sulfite exposure is linked to the fact that SO2 is a major air pollutant [2] and in aqueous media SO2 exists in equilibrium with SO2-/3. In addition, beverages and foods are common sources of sulfite intake. For example, sulfite is used extensively in the wine industry as an inhibitor of yeasts and bacteria and is present in finished wines in concentrations up to 6 mM [1]. Sulfite is also often added to dehydrated fruits, vegetables and soups, as well as fruit juices and beer [1,3,4]. Because of these, the mean daily intake of sulfite from diet (in the United States) has been estimated to be between 0.0014 and 0.14 mM/kg body weight [1]. At such high levels, sulfite exposure can have toxic effects, such as the induction of an acute asthmatic state [5,6]. Sulfite also appears to have adverse genetic effects [7] and can act as a mutagen or comutagen [8] and a cocarcinogen [5,7-9]."

Experimental results of three-phase mixing in a physical model of a CCRL for metals refining are presented. The system was operated above a critical lower liquid height-to- width ratio (H,/W) of unity, with adequate bottom gas injection through a line of central, single tuyeres (Q,/A = 7.5 cm/min, or c = 17 W/m3) to sustain levels of interphase transport considered appropriate to an industrial pyrometallurgical refining operation. The application of a thermal tracer technique to elucidate both longitudinal mixing and interphase heat transfer is discussed. The results indicate that even under conditions of significant bottom gas injection, it should be possible to maintain acceptably low longitudinal mixing 1 (D, < 20 cm /s and D,/uL < 0.1) in the CCRL. Interphase mass transfer coefficients of the order of 0.004 cm/s are predicted from the measured interphase heat transfer coefficients (h = 1.3 to 2.0 kW/m2K), using the heat and mass transfer analogy. Adequate rates of rehning are predicted for an industrial CCRL operated under such conditions.

Flotation studies were carried out to recover carbon values from blast furnace flue dust containing ~30.34% carbon, 4.6% volatile matter (VM), and 65.03% ash. The variables chosen for the experiments were dispersant (sodium hexametaphosphate), pH, collector (diesel oil), and frother (MIBC). The experiments were designed according to a 24 full factorial design method and regression equations for the recovery of carbon and product grade were determined from the data. Experiments were performed to optimize recovery and grade using the steepest ascent method. The maximum recovery of carbon was 90.0% with a concentration of 56.5%, whereas the maximum obtainable grade of carbon was 66.35% with 50.45% recovery.

In this work, preheating and roasting tests of pellets made from blends of Western Australia ultra-fine (WAU) magnetite concentrate and Chinese domestic magnetite concentrate or Brazilian hematite concentrate were carried out. The results showed that pellets made from 100 per cent WAU magnetite concentrate possesses inferior preheating and roasting performance when preheating at 1050&#176;C for 20 minutes and roasting at 1300&#176;C for 40 minutes, the compressive strength of preheated and fired pellets is 502 N/pellet and 2313 N/pellet, respectively. When 40 per cent Chinese domestic magnetite concentrate or 20 per cent Brazilian hematite concentrate was blended with 60 per cent or 80 per cent WAU magnetite concentrate, the appropriate preheating temperature of the pellets are reduced from 1050&#176;C to 950&#176;C and 975&#176;C, and also the firing temperature of two types pellets are decreased from 1300&#176;C to 1250&#176;C and 1280&#176;C respectively. Moreover, the compressive strength of fired pellets is obviously improved up to 2746 N/pellet and 2630 N/pellet respectively. Microstructure analysis of the fired pellets made from 100 per cent WAU shows its poor growth of Fe2O3 grains, low interlinkage degree of hematite grains, small size of crystallised grains and high porosity of pellet; however, the fired pellets that blended with domestic magnetite concentrate or with Brazilian hematite concentrate have fully growth of Fe2O3 grains, closer interlinkage of hematite grains, lower porosity and stronger consolidation. Good morning and thanks for the chance to talk to you. It&apos;s really pleasing to see so many industry representatives here I want to spend a few minutes talking about issues relating to your industry. At the end of today I would like to leave you with three strong messages from government. The first is that this government supports environmentally responsible mining and the endeavours of the mining industry. The second is that explorers and developers are wanted and welcomed in New Zealand. And the last is that it is up to the industry to keep the public properly informed about how your industry and to constantly work on improving your public image. The mining industry is a high-tech industry which fits snugly with our concept of a growing knowledge-based economy. It has particular value for regional development, the gold mining industry alone provides more than 4,000 jobs û mostly outside of the main cities. The industrial minerals industry is twice as large as that. As well as those people directly employed by the industry there are greater downstream effects for the community. One example from the broader extraction industry of this is of the local pie shop down the road from one of Taranaki&apos;s petroleum industry locations. The shop sells over $4,000 worth of pies a week to workers in the industry. That&apos;s just one example of the positive benefits the industry brings to its local community and is the sort of real positive benefit you need to be telling people about &nbsp;

The limits of flammability and minimum autoignition temperature of a fuel are important elements in assessing fire and explosion hazards that may exist when using or handling the fuel. The limits of flammability define the range of compositions of the fuel gas or vapor mixed with an oxidant through which a flame, initiated by an outside energy source such as an electrical spark, can propagate. The minimum autoignition temperature (M.A.I.T.) is the lowest temperature at which the fuel vapors ignite spontaneously in a specified medium; in this case the ignition energy is supplied by the heat content of tae environment. This temperature is also referred to as S.I.T. value by some authors. Because the autoignition of a fuel also depends on the time interval during which the fuel is subjected to heat, ignition delays are significant. Ignition delay is defined here as the total time elapsed between the introduction of the liquid fuel into the oxidizing atmosphere and the appearance of a flame. This time interval includes both the physical and chemical processes leading to ignition. The ignition delay is usually maximum at the M.A.I.T, and decreases as the temperature of the system is increased. The flash point and the fire point are also useful in assessing the fire and explosion hazards of a fuel. The flash point is the lowest temperature at which saturated, flammable fuel vapor-air mixtures are formed at atmospheric pressure and, therefore, it is essentially the lower limit of flammability

The purpose of this paper is to draw attention to a number of topics that were discussed at the WG12 meetings held in April and September 2008; and also to a number of other matters that arose from the presentation of thirty-four papers at the 5th International Symposium on Sprayed Concrete held in Lillehammer, Norway between 21 and 24 April 2008.

The author summarizes and extends the relevant results of papers previously published by various authors and presents these results in chart form. The charts are used to demonstrate the theory on a hypothetical mine.INTRODUCTIONRecently a series of articles have dealt with leakage in a mine ventilation system and the problem of its reduction.Theories were developed by Peascod and Keane (1955) for the combined effect of flow in the airways and leakage through the porous barrier between the intake and return of an ideal mine. Later Keane and Peascoa. (1956) extended these ideas to the use of an underground booster fan in increasing the face ventilation and showed how to determine the water gauge and location of the most efficient underground fan.These articles were based on the assumption that Atkin:son&apos;s formula:P = R Q2 (1)gave the relation between the pressure drop P lb&apos;/sq. ft., the quantity, Q kilocusecs, flowing in the mine airways and the total resistance, R Atkinsons, to air flow offered by the mine roadway. An Atkinson is defined as a resistance such that 1 kilocusec of air flows due to a pressure drop of 1Ib.jsq. ft. However for conditions prevailing in most mines a more :appropriate relation is that postulated by Reynolds and others (Lamb, 1953) :P=R Qn (2)where n has some value slightly less than 2. It should be noted that Atkinsons may not be used as units when n is not equal to 2.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Cu-Ag-Au mineralisation at Kluwih prospect in Eastern Java, Indonesia is related to a high-sulfidation hydrothermal system within a volcanic dome (2.35 × 1.7 km diameter). The mineralisation occurs mainly in steeply dipping, structurally-controlled quartz-enargite-pyrite veins (several centimetres to 2 m wide) and is hosted mainly in porphyritic dacite, volcaniclastic rocks and volcanic breccia of the dome and in an underlying andesite that yielded a zircon U-Pb age of 11.5 Ma.Short wave infrared spectrometer analyses were carried out for alteration mapping at Kluwih. There are two main stages of alteration produced by the hydrothermal activity. The alteration mineral assemblages indicate an advanced argillic alteration. The Cu mineralisation occurred in the form of enargite and subordinate chalcopyrite with an intergrown texture in the early stage. These mineralised veins are characterised by narrow pyrophyllite ± diaspore and dickite selvages (metres wide) and a peripheral K-muscovite envelope (sericitic alteration) up to 100 m wide. The K-muscovite envelope is zoned outward to Na-muscovite or Na-illite. Late-stage kaolinite and smectite alteration overprints the porphyritic dacite and may obscure the nature of early mica-clay alteration. The spatial distribution of different alteration assemblages suggests that the temperature of hydrothermal fluid increases with depth.Both the high-sulfidation mineralisation and advanced argillic alteration are suggested to be related to magmatic-hydrothermal fluids, which are likely to originate from an undiscovered deeper porphyry Cu-Au system below the porphyritic dacite. Based on alteration mapping results and comparisons to similar deposits, the porphyry intrusion could be up to 500 m below the volcanic dome. The conclusion from the debate over the last decade in the mining sector is that, for grade control, reverse circulation (RC) drill sampling gives more reliable results due to less sampling problems than blasthole samples. However, by conducting the latter with well-controlled procedures there still exist fair possibilities to counteract the major blasthole sampling problems and achieve fit-for-purpose representativeness, especially if based on minimal loss of fines. In the present PhD study, extensive replicate experiments and variographic characterisations are conducted to evaluate the performance of manual blasthole (BH) sampling and sectorial segment sampling. The experiments were performed in Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB)’s Leveäniemi open pit mine in the north of Sweden. The experimental area is an apatite-magnetite iron ore deposit of the Kiruna type, with the demand to exhibit a maximum of local heterogeneity to allow the experiment the largest possible conclusion powers. Gathering and splitting the complete BH drill cutting cones (fines cone, coarse cone) served as an authoritative reference on which to assess the representativity of the two BH sampling methods.Results show that manual BH drill sampling is able to produce samples with an acceptable accuracy and precision if performed properly and with insight. Based on variographic comparison, segment sampling shows similar precision for chemical grades as the manual sampling, while the particle size distributions were more deviating for segment sampling than for manual sampling at the high and low size ranges. Possible reasons for these partly surprising results are discussed.For further investigation of the performance of BH versus RC drill sampling, a second experiment has been planned on a parallel profile. This will result in an unprecedented opportunity for a full variographic comparison between RC and BH sampling, aimed at designing specific, fit-for-purpose sampling procedures as a function of ore quality, cut-off grades and important contaminant levels.CITATION:Engström, K and Esbensen, K H, 2017. In June 1914, one week before I was to be awarded my sheepskin in upper New York State, I received a telegram from New York City which read "Can offer you position as engineer in Chile at $115 a month contract for one year. (signed) Chile Copper Co." That night, Friday, I took a sleeper to New York and arrived at the Guggenheim Brothers&apos; company office at 165 Broadway, just as it was opening up on Saturday morning. Saturday was no holiday in that era. Presenting the telegram at the office, I was ushered into a sub-executive&apos;s office and shown a mimeographed contract which 1) agreed to pay me $115 per month from the date of leaving New York until I returned, and with travelling expenses both ways, 2) fixed a charge of $46 per month for board and lodging in company quarters, and 3) stipulated a contract term of one year with the right to retain my services for another year if the company so elected. While a bit huffed at the year&apos;s "kicker" I nevertheless accepted. I was then told to prepare to leave the following Wednesday (June 17) on a United Fruit Co. steamer for Panama. Objecting that I still had to receive my degree on the 17th and had planned a vacation in Ohio for a week or so…

"Falcon concentrators are enhanced gravity separators designed for concentrating fine and ultrafine slurries. The Falcon UF model is unique in that it is dedicated to beneficiation of ultrafines, one key feature being that it does not make use of any fluidisation water. In a former study, we investigated the physical mechanisms that govern the transport of ultrafine particles (in the range 10 to 80 µm) inside Falcon UF concentrators, and concluded that separation efficiency is governed by differential settling. Initially, we derived and published a predictive model of the partition function under dilute conditions. The present paper proposes an extension of the initial model to concentrated ultrafine suspensions for application to industrial scenarios. The paper discusses how hindered settling has been added into the initial model to account for solid concentration effects. The modified model is tested against experiments carried out with a laboratory scale UF Falcon concentrator from dilute conditions up to 30 vol%. A good agreement between measurements and model predictions is obtained, which confirms that our hypotheses about the physics of separation inside a UF Falcon separator remain valid even at high concentrations.INTRODUCTIONThe Falcon concentrator is a fast spinning bowl that is fed at its centre of rotation. It uses centrifugal force to separate particles that are transported inside a thin liquid film that flows upward along the inclined wall of the bowl (McAlister and Armstrong, 1998). Due to differential settling, dense and coarse particles are concentrated inside the bowl whereas light and fine particles are rejected with the overflow stream. The fast rotation speed of the bowl yields high centrifugal force several hundred times the attraction of Earth. Despite the thinness of the liquid film (between 100 µm and 1 mm with a Falcon L40) where separation takes place, the Falcon concentrator can treat high flowrates (up to 30 L/min). At the bottom of the bowl, an impeller transmits the bowl rotation to the feed, which drains upward by centrifugal force as soon as it hits the base of the spinning bowl (Figure 1)."

Planning of New York’s new subway line dictated the location of shallow underground station caverns and track crossovers. Clear span openings ranging from70 feet to 100 feet and lengths in excess of 1000 feet, coupled with low rock cover ranging from 25 feet to 40 feet required judicious selection of construction methods, equipment, and proper sequencing of the excavation stages. Rock classifications alone could not predict the behavior of the rock mass during construction. A robust design procedure that considered most of the important aspects of rock behavior and elements of shallow tunnel design, minimized the negative impacts of variable geotechnical data. This paper describes the intricacies of the planning and design of the $16 billion Second Avenue Subway with insight into how to overcome the design complexities and construction challenges of the urban underground.

Sublevel open stoping is a low-cost method that has been successfully employed in many large underground mining operations. Where ore body characteristics are suitable, extensive mechanization and the use of large-scale stoping techniques can considerably reduce operating costs. However, careful long-term planning of mine layouts and large capital commitments in development are required prior to production. Implementing precise mine design procedures and carefully controlling operations can result in considerable benefits. This article describes methods to achieve these objectives based largely on mining operations at Mount Isa, where sublevel open stoping has been used since 1932. Ore won by this method accounted for a very large percentage of the total tonnage produced at Mount Isa. Major costs associated with sublevel open stoping can be classified as drilling, explosives and charging, and LHD costs. In this article, analyses of these costs are made with particular reference to stope design. Parameters such as burden, drill hole diameter, explosive density, specific charge, etc., are considered in establishing the interrelationship of unit operating costs, as well as total costs of sublevel open stoping.

Keywords: Aluminum alloy 3004, Solidification rate, Homogenization, Second phase particles The effects of the fineness of as-solidified cast microstructure and temperature on the response of aluminum alloy 3004 to homogenization heat treatment (a.k.a. preheat) have been investigated. The study was conducted at 538oC and 595oC on directionally solidified laboratory-size ingots with a range of solidification rate of 0.10oC/s to 29.4oC/s. Optical and electron microscopy, quantitative image analysis, electrical conductivity, and electron probe microanalysis were used to quantify the effects of the homogenization heat treatment on the microstructure of aluminum alloy 3004. In general, increase in fineness of as-cast microstructure and homogenization temperature enhances the a-transformation reaction, dissolution of Mg2Si, elimination of dendritic microsegregation, and dispersoid formation. The homogenization heat treatment reduces the average size of second phase particles in castings solidified at <1oC/s. However, in castings solidified at above 1oC /s, homogenization causes the coarsening of the second phase particles. Mn in solid solution is independent of homogenization heat treatment temperature.

Seismic areas were in the eastern margin of the Qinghai-Tibet plain, whose structures were complicated, mainly composed of Maowen fault, Yingxiu fault and Pengxian-guanxian fault. The rapid rise of the Qinghai-Tibet plain led the crustal material of the eastern edge to move to the southeast along the faults on a large scale since the late Cenozoic; Minshan block structure and Long Men Mountain tectonic zone represented the strong nappe thrust movement as the east boundary of Chuanqing slip block; the stress was accumulating when squeezed, which to a certain extent resulted in breakdown of the crust, and earthquakes. The shock speed, high-energy accumulation, and the reversed dextrorotation of the earthquake fault characteristics et al. happened, which caused the development of secondary geological disastersts. According to on-site investigation, the typical geological disasters had thrust rock collapse, the instability deposit, the revival of potential debris flow et al. whose genetic model had been analysed.

ALTHOUGH the element titanium was discovered by William Gregor in 1790, over a hundred years passed before it was put to commercial use. The first commercial application of titanium was as an alloy additive to iron and steel, and the first ferroalloys were produced domestically in 1906. Titanium pigments were developed somewhat later and have been produced in the United States since 1918. The use of titaniferous material in welding-rod coatings first gained acceptance ill the mid-30&apos;s. The metal titanium has only had commercial importance since 1948; domestic production for that year was 10 tons. The relative importance of these major uses of titanium in various forms may he gaged by the consumption of titanium dioxide (Ti02) for these purposes in 1954. Of a total of 440,000 short tons of Ti02 consumed in 1954, 95 percent of the total was consumed for pigments; 2 percent for welding-rod coatings; 1 percent for non-titanium-base alloys and carbide; and 2 percent for miscellaneous uses. The titanium-metal industry is in its infancy, but it has more than doubled its output every year from 1948 to 1954, reaching 5,370 short tons in 1954.

"The use of stirred mill to complement tumbling mills in grinding fine grained minerals is increasingly becoming an attractive processing option. Parameters such as agitation speed, grinding media type and size, feed pulp density, and grinding time were studied in order to elucidate their impact on stirred milling. Test results showed that the parameters have a profound effect on stirred mill efficiency and operating cost. A comparative test with a tumbling ball mill was also made and the specific energies of both mills in fine grinding were analyzed. A difference of over 40% in energy savings particularly when the product size is smaller than 20 µm was obtained with the stirred mill.INTRODUCTIONIn industrial processes where very fine and ultrafine particles are required such as in chemical, ink, food, paint and lacquer, pulp and paper, plastics, pharmaceutical, metallurgical and ceramic industries, the use of stirred mills for grinding is well established. Mineral processing plants are gradually shifting focus to the use of stirred mills for fine grinding and /or regrinding purposes as the target liberation size gets very small. A number of plants processing finely/sparsely disseminated ores are known to have adopted stirred milling technology for their fine grinding needs (Enderle et al., 1997; Harbort et al., 1999; Gao et al., 2000; Davey, 2003 & 2006; Pease et al., 2006).There are different kinds/designs of stirred mills available on the market but, all can be divided into two sub groups namely fluidized and non-fluidized types. The non-fluidized stirred mills consist of Tower mill, Vertimill, Sala agitated mill (SAM), and ANI-Metprotech (SVM). These mills are characterized by their low-speed and the use of fairly coarse grinding media size, 3 – 20 mm. Hence, they are mostly suitable for relatively coarse grinding application. The fluidized type includes the Isamill, Netzsch mill and Stirred mill detritor (SMD). These mills have a characteristic high agitator speed, use fine grinding media size of 0.5 – 5 mm, and are employed in very fine grinding operations. The superior fine grinding capability of stirred mills is attributable to two main process parameters, which are the use of fine grinding media and a high mill speed."

That is, the inside of chimney is cylindrical, wldst the outside is gradually stepped inwards with of 1 in. and less until the shell is 6 in. thick only at the top. With these dimensions in mind, it will be seen that some close thought was necessary to ensure a satisfactory of fonn which could be kept rigid and plumb to a height and at the same time provide safe working conditions for the labourers employed.FOUNDATIONSThe spread base of the chimney is 45 ft. in diameter, and foundations were carried down to a depth of 8 ft. 6 in. below natural surface into good hard clay which was known to be the best foundation obtainable in the vicinity being capable of withstanding, when dry, a load of 3 tons to 4 tons per square foot, whereas dead load is 1A tons per square foot and the maximum load expeeted under the most severe wind condition is 2 tons per square foot to ensure the foundation being kept dry and unaffected by ground water, the site was surrounded by a ring drain at a distance of six feet from edge of concrete foundation and at a minimum depth of one foot below bottom of concrete. Open-jointed pipes were laid in the bottom ofthe drain and graded to a pipe drain with outfall clear of the site.
