A preliminary program dated April 25, 1974, was prepared for Development Engineering, Inc. (DEI) on research and development. for laboratory, field and other engineering studies on the disposal of retorted oil shale. This program was revised and published as a final document dated December 17, 1974. The document included discussions on the peculiarities of retorted shale materials to be investigated and discussions of the various laboratory and field tests which would need to be conducted to define their physical and chemical properties. The proposed research and development program was divided into eight work phases as follows: I Program Development. II Exploratory Laboratory Tests on Old U.S.B.M. Retorted Shale. III Laboratory Tests on Pilot Plant Retorted Shales, IV Laboratory Tests on Retorted Shale from the Semi-Works Plant, Field, Test Plots and Ponds. V Field Compaction Tests. VI Infiltration Pond Tests. VIII Final Report.

"Tungsten skarn deposits on the Clea property in the Selwyn Mountains, Y. T., are related genetically to a quartz monzonite stock, about 500 metres in diameter at the surface. Lower Paleozoic sedimentary rocks are metamorphosed for a distance of 3 km from the stock. Tungsten-bearing skarn mineralization within the altered sedimentary rocks is of two types: sulphide-rich pods and calc-silicate beds. The most significant scheelite concentration is in calc-silicate beds near or adjacent to the quartz monzonite stock. Discordant K-Ar and Rb-Sr isotopic dates indicate that the stock is probably of early Late Cretaceous age, 94 Ma or slightly older, and that it cooled slowly. High initial 87Srl86Sr ratios and disequilibrium relationships between K-jeldspar phenocrysts and groundmass minerals in the porphyritic phase of the granitic rock , and between different granitic rock specimens, indicate contamination of crystallizing magma by old sialic continental crust which extends westward under the Selwyn Basin.This study is significant to regional tungsten exploration. Granitic rocks associated with tungsten deposits, in this part of the Canadian Cordillera at least, appear to have specific isotope characteristics that indicate they were generated at a specific time and in a particular way.IntroductionThe Clea tungsten skarn property (Fig. I) is owned by Canex Placer Limited, and lies in the Selwyn Mountains (Bostock, 1948) near the eastern margin of the Selwyn Basin (Wheeler and Gabrielse, 1972), Yukon Territory. The property covers a 20-square-mile area centered near latitude 62°47 ' north and longitude 129°52' west, and is accessible by helicopter. An airstrip and the terminus of a summer-use gravel road at MacMillan Pass, Yukon, are about 20 miles to the northnorthwest.This paper deals mainly with the geochronemetry of granitic rocks from a stock associated with tungsten mineralization on the Clea property. We show that these rocks have specific characteristics that not only define the genesis of this stock, but also have significance for regional tungsten exploration around plutons in the Canadian Cordillera."

INTRODUCTION East Side Access (ESA) Contract CQ028 is located in the New York City Borough of Queens. The contract involves construction of a 230-meter (760-foot) long open-cut excavation with a permanent deck supporting Amtrak yard tracks over a semi-circular TBM launch wall on the east end, and the 36.5-meter (120-foot) long Northern Blvd. Crossing on the west end. The Northern Boulevard Crossing will be mined under an existing New York City Transit (NYCT) five-track subway tunnel; Northern Boulevard, a heavily traveled five-lane truck route; and an existing NYCT three-track elevated line; connecting to an existing open-cut shaft adjacent to the existing 63rd Street Tunnel bellmouth. When completed, Contract CQ028 will provide access for future Manhattan and Queens tunnel contracts. The footprint of the open-cut was determined by the geometric requirements of the future Plaza Interlocking facility to be constructed within in another future ESA contract. See Figure 1. This paper discusses design risk mitigations for the key elements of the contract, namely the Northern Blvd. Crossing and the semi-circular TBM Launch Wall. PROJECT OVERVIEW The Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction Company—East Side Access Project for the Long Island Rail Road will provide Long Island commuters with direct access to Manhattan’s East Side via a new rail line between the Harold Interlocking in Queens and Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan. The project connects the unused lower level of the existing tunnel under the East River at 63rd Street to new connecting tunnels in Queens and Manhattan. Contract CQ028 Scope and Construction Schedule This contract consists of the excavation of an open-cut from the east side of Northern Boulevard, through an existing MTA-owned rail yard and into the western limits of Amtrak’s Sunnyside Yard. A significant amount of metallic iron in the world is produced in blast furnaces from iron ore pellets. To control the quality of pellets and to optimise pellet production, characterisation of both green and fired pellets is required. Optical image analysis (OIA) allows identification of different minerals, binder, remaining fluxes and porosity within pellets.For proper identification of the mineralogy, porosity and texture in pellets a high magnification is required, therefore each individual image covers only a very small portion of the pellet. At the same time the characterisation of pellets requires that the whole pellet is represented as a single object, so the size of the resulting overall image at high magnification can make it difficult to handle. A solution to this problem has been implemented within the CSIRO OIA package Mineral4 by combining images at different levels. Namely, to average out local irregularities, individual frames can be stitched during imaging into larger MosaiX images. Mineral4 further combines these MosaiX images into a single panorama image of the whole pellet.The proposed procedures allow the calculation of mineral and porosity spatial distributions, local gradients and abundance graphs based on the distance from the centre of the pellet. The Bureau of Mines initiated a program to address short-and long-term objectives of wetlands restoration as a option for reclamation of lands mined for phosphate. The short-term objectives were to identify a suitable wetland test site, initiate an extensive premining monitoring plan, develop an acceptable mining plan, and recontour and revegetate the test site. These goals were accomplished using a unique combination of expertise provided by Federal and State agencies and private industry. A 6.5-ha forested wetland with an associated streambed was offered by private industry as the test site. A premining monitoring program was established and carried out from May 1982 to October 1983. A control site was established to determine ecological changes unrelated to mining. Clearing and mining began in October 1983 and was completed in April 1984. Grading and streambed restoration was completed in February 1986. Revegetation of the site was completed in February 1987. The program to meet the long-term objective of postmining monitoring is described.

The Bureau of Mines, at the request of local authorities in Rock Springs, Wyo., investigated and conducted through contracts a multistage program of exploratory drilling and pumped-slurry backfilling of 15 areas of potential subsidence in abandoned mine workings underneath that community. Initially, the Bureau in 1969 had recommended a program of gravity blind flushing of some of the inaccessible mine voids, and in 1970 a new technique, the pumped-slurry injection process, was tested for the first time in a site adjacent to the city's area of severe surface subsidence. Success of this initial testing program, and of a large-scale project in Scranton, Pa., led to further large- scale projects, funded by Congress, that resulted in the successful back- filling not only of all 15 target areas of potential subsidence in Rock Springs, but also of several areas in other States. Total cost of the projects in Rock Springs, including the original pumped-slurry test, was $3,243,993. A total of about 923,000 tons of sand was injected hydraulically into mine voids, rendering 178 acres of residential and central-downtown areas of Rock Springs less susceptible to subsidence damage. The pumped-slurry method was proved to be much superior to the gravity blind flushing method in term of the amount of solids that could be injected underground through a single borehole. However, there are special conditions that make this technique more or less applicable in different areas or underground configurations, as noted in the report's conclusions.

A colloquium on 'Developments in the Mechanization of Mining Operations' was held in, conjunction with the 1984 Electra Mining Exhibition, at the Milpark Holiday Inn in Johannesburg on 19th September, 1984. An attendance of close on 200 delegates was testimony to the popularity of the subject. The delegates included a number of visitors from abroad, including senior members of the management of foreign companies and a member of the Council of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, United Kingdom. Both the local and foreign press was also represented.

INTRODUCTION Tunneling machines were introduced into civil con¬struction in the 1800s, but their practical applications were not realized fully until the 1950s. As of 1977, tunneling machines were being used on most tunneling projects of substantial size. As in civil construction, the mining applications of tunneling machines have included long drives such as tunneling for long ore-body develop¬ment drifts, long haulage tunnels, longwall access drifts, and long crosscut developments. Tunneling machines ranging from 1.75-m (5.7-ft) to more than I1.0-m (36-ft) diam are available from several manufacturers; machines for mining applications generally have ranged between 1.75 and 6.0-m (5.7¬and 20.0-ft) diam. Tunneling machines usually operate at or near horizontal grades and are supported by a rail-haulage backup system. However, declines and inclines have been made using alternative backup equip¬ment. Either circular or shaped tunnels may be bored, depending upon the particular equipment used. Using tunneling machines to bore openings through rock offers several advantages over the use of the drilling and blasting technique. These advantages include a rapid advance, continuous operation, uniformity of the opening size, smooth walls, and safe working conditions. Compared to drilling and blasting, boring reduces the disturbance of adjacent rock, thereby reducing the ground-support requirements and the exposure to water inflows. The smooth walls provide natural arching and present minimum resistance to the flow of air. A tunneling machine should be considered a spe¬cialized mining tool that is well-suited to certain mining applications. Properly applied and sustained, a tunnel¬ing machine contributes to realizing substantial econo¬mies in the development of underground mines. All costs herein are expressed in 1977 US dollars, unless otherwise noted. The mention of trade names and manufacturers is not intended to imply an endorse¬ment of any specific equipment. TYPES OF TUNNELING MACHINES As listed in Table 1, five principal types of tunneling machines were being manufactured in 1977. Each type of machine offers a special solution to a specific mining problem. Although each of these types of machines is described herein, most of this chapter is devoted to the full-face rotary rock-tunneling machine that has demon¬strated the greatest production in both civil construction and mining applications. Full-Face Rotary Rock-Tunneling Machines As shown in Fig. 1, a full-face rotary rock-tunneling machine consists of a rotating head that is fitted with rock-cutting tools and is forced into the tunnel face. This head is supported by a bearing on a structural support member that, in turn, is held in place by a hydraulically positioned wall-gripping mechanism. Both torque and thrust are reacted from the cutterhead, through the structural support and gripper mechanism, and to the tunnel wall. The rock cuttings fall to the invert at the tunnel face, and they are removed by means of cutterhead buckets or scoops that transfer the cuttings to a conveyor belt. After advancing the cutter¬head through a preset boring stroke, the tunneling machine is advanced by hydraulically pulling the gripper mechanism in from the tunnel walls, stroking forward, and resetting the gripper to the new forward position on the wall; the machine then is set for the next advance stroke. Full-face machines cut only circular openings. Ma¬chines with diameters as small as 1.8 m (6 ft) and as large as 6.1 m (20 ft) have been used in mining applica¬tions, excavating rock with unconfined compressive strengths in excess of 276 000 kPa (40,000 psi). Although special machines have been designed to turn on a radius of 30 m (100 ft) in both horizontal and vertical directions, the conveyors and backup sup¬port equipment generally limit tunneling machines to turns with a radius of more than 60 m (200 ft). The full-face rotary rock-tunneling machines have provided the fastest and most reliable production of any mining method or machine. These machines can be equipped to place any of a variety of ground-support systems, and they can be provided as "open" machines, as shown in Fig. 1, or as "shielded" machines, as shown in Fig. 2. The open machines have the advantage of allowing the ground to be supported as near to the tunnel face as possible. The shielded machines have been designed principally to allow placing precast con¬crete segments. The shielded machines completely pro¬tect the equipment and personnel at the heading, but they are economically limited to permanent long-life haulageways where full lining is required. Partial-Face Rotary Rock-Tunneling Machines As shown in Fig. 3, the partial-face rotary tunneling machine is equipped with a cutterhead that rotates slowly at about 0.21 rad/s (2.0 rpm). The single-disk cutterhead produces the tunnel section shown in Fig. 4 by means of an oscillating motion. These machines work on the undercutting principle, and they are avail¬able in spring-line dimensional increments of 0.1 m (0.32 ft) from 1.5 to 2.1 m (5.0 to 7.0 ft); the vertical dimensions are 2.4 to 3.2 m (8.0 to 10.5 ft), respec¬tively. Depending upon the tunnel width, the cutterhead disk may be fitted with from 8 to 16 drag-bit cutters. Penetration is achieved by means of hydraulic rams that force the tungsten-carbide bits into the rock mass. The operation is cyclic, with cutting occurring only on the upstroke. On the downstroke, the rotating cutter¬head draws the fallen muck from the invert into the panzer-type conveyor for rearward transfer. This feature allows time to either reposition ore cars or to exit the tunnel with muck trains while the machine is cutting, as shown in Fig. 5. A few studies on the relationship of the fusion temperature of the ash on coke to that of the corresponding coal have been made on commercial high-temperature cokes. H. J. Rose3/ in 1921 compared the fusion temperatures of the ashes of 10 coals and the cokes produced from them and concluded that they were in such hose agreement that either figure could be used. More recently, Quarfort4/ found that the ash of coke fused at a somewhat lower temperature than that of the original coal. As the ash of a coal and that off tie coke produced therefrom have the same origin their chemical composition should be identical, provided that carbonization has not altered the inorganic, or ash-forming, constituents of the coal, and such alteration seems highly improbable. However, it has been shown5/ that coke is liable to contamination by iron during crushing and grinding preparatory to sampling. Pieters6/ found that coke ash was contaminated in this manner up to 0.4 percent. Extraneous iron would lower the ash-fusion temperature because such iron may form ferrous silicate, which is readily fusible.7/ These results provide a basis for the prediction that the ash of coke will fuse at a lower temperature than that of the corresponding coal, especially if the fine grinding of the coke was done by rubbing -surfaces of iron, as in a disk pulverizer or bucking plate.

Bedrock gold mineralisation has been located in association with an extensive float train 25 km west of known alluvial gold. It is in the form of open, matrix-supported breccias comprising pyritic quartz/sericite clasts in a vuggy, cherty chalcedonic and crystalline quartz matrix. Fluid inclusions in pyritic clasts indicate trapping temperatures for gold mineralising hydrothermal fluid of 170-240 degrees C. This mineralisation could represent the upper part of a feeder zone to an exhalative hydrothermal system. It is possible that other high-level feeder zones could be preserved elsewhere in the area. Deep weathering of such a system could provide a source for the alluvial gold localities near Helmsdale. It is suggested that east and central Sutherland presents good prospects for exhalative epithermal gold mineralisation and the associated feeder zones

In its role of providing technical assistance to the mining industry, the Bureau of Mines' Tuscaloosa Research Center has conducted research to develop trapped miner location systems which would aid in locating miners trapped by underground mining disasters. Efforts to produce electromagnetic systems for the location of trapped miners underground and to communicate with them were surveyed, from the 1920's to 1981. Theoretical studies of through-the-earth electromagnetic transmissions are described as well as studies of the electrical characteristics of various rocks, minerals, and soil. Several trapped miner location systems are reviewed including the Westinghouse systems, the DEVELCO system, and an automated three-dimensional location system, and the phase difference of arrival technique. Tangential research, relevant to trapped miner location systems is described. A comprehensive bibliography covering all aspects of trapped miner, through-the-earth electromagnetic location and communications systems is appended.

The ultimate object of this investigation is to develop a method for determining the pressure, in situ, on rock mine pillars, arches, and other mire structures. The preliminary investigations of Bureau of Mines engineers, as well as those of other investigators,4/ have shown that the velocity of sound depends on the pressure if it is dependent to such an extent that a measurement of the velocity might be used as a means of determining the pressure, a sonic method of measuring the pressure on rock mine columns is possible. Briefly the method would require, first, laboratory determination of the variation of the velocity of sound with pressure in samples of rocks taken from mine pillars to establish a. velocity-pressure relationship for the type of rock and, next, measurements of the velocity of sound in the mine pillars from which the laboratory samples were taken. The pressure on the pillars could be determined by correlating the velocity in the pillar with the velocity-pressure relationship established in the laboratory. Obviously the success of the method depends on the extent to which the velocity of sound varies with pressure in rock.

As placas de circuito impresso (PCIs) dos resíduos eletroeletrônicos (REEEs) possuem diversos metais na composição. A recuperação desses metais tem incentivado as pesquisas inovadoras no seu processo de extração. Como alternativa de recuperação de metais das PCIs de forma sustentável optou-se pela biohidrometalurgia envolvendo a fase extração. O presente trabalho avalia a biolixiviação do cobre na presença de duas cepas bacterianas distintas em PCIs de REEEs provenientes de impressoras obsoletas. As PCIs foram caracterizadas mediante as técnicas analíticas de espectrometria ICP-OES e de fluorescência de Raios X (FRX) para determinar os elementos químicos presentes na amostra inicial. As cepas utilizadas na lixiviação bacteriana foram Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (AF) e Leptospirillum ferrooxidans (LF), cultivadas em meio de cultura T&K. Os ensaios de biolixiviação foram realizados em incubadora orbital, com velocidade de rotação de 170 rpm, temperatura de 30 oC, volume de inoculo de 10% (v/v) e densidade de polpa de 30g/L. A técnica empregada na concentração de cobre da solução após a biolixiviação foi a FRX. Foi possível determinar que a cepa AF apresentou uma extração de 100% de cobre em 8 dias em comparação com a LF na qual foi observado que a extração de cobre foi de 100% em 5 dias.

DISPERSION strengthening has been studied in a number of metal-metal oxide systems. To date those pure metals available as fine particles (less than about 5 p) have received most of the attention whereas solid solution alloys, generally unavailable as fine powders, have not been examined in detail. The present work was undertaken as a preliminary study to evaluate combined effects of solid solution and dispersion strengthening. The technique used was that of dry mixing of elemental powders with the oxide, followed by a diffusion treatment to obtain the solid solution. The average particle size of the powders used was: Ni, 3.2 p (1nco B); Mo, 1.3 p (Fansteel Metallurgical Corp.); and y alumina, 0.027 \i (G. L. Cabot, Inc.). The particle size of the metal powders was determined by Fisher subsieve measurements while the size of the alumina was calculated from a surface area determination. Prior diffusion studies on small compacts pressed from mixtures of nickel and molybdenum powders with and without 7.5 vol pct A1203 indicated that diffusion was complete after sintering for 100 hr at 1800" , or 50 hr at 2250", or 20 hr at 2550° F. The progress of diffusion was followed by microstructural examination and micro-hardness measurements. Two observations made during the diffusion experiments were: 1) That diffusion proceeded faster in the presence of alumina, confirming similar findings by Seith and Loepman on "SAP'';4 2) That diffusion at temperatures above 1800°F resulted in coarsening of the alumina in agreement with results of other authors reporting on the growth of alumina in nickel above 1800"F. Similar experiments in the Ni-Cr system using 6 and 20 p Cr powders of 0.7 and 0.025 pct 0, respectively, did not result in significant solid solution formation even after long time exposures at 2550° F. It must be concluded that chromium oxide films around individual particles interfere with normal diffusion. A nickel alloy containing 5 wt pct Mo and 7.5 vol pct alumina was fabricated by dry mixing of powders, isostatically compacting at 30,000 psi, diffusing for 120 hr in dry hydrogen at 1800" F, and extruding at 1950"~ with a 30 to 1 reduction of area ratio. The resulting structure, presented in Fig. 1

At the Chuquicamata Division of Codelco-Chile high arsenic concentrates are produced, which at the smelter are processed via the Outokumpu Flash Furnace and Teniente Converters to obtain copper mattes. In the case of the Teniente Converters the production of matte grade near white metal composition is a common practice since the eighties and provided in the pyrometallurgical route no appropiate measures are taken, penalties have to be paid because of arsenic content in the anodes. During smelting huge volume of slag is produced and elimination of arsenic by slagging at this step is not economically attractive. Although during fire refining is possible to eliminate arsenic by use of mixtures of calcium and sodium carbonates this alternative is expensive, takes long process time and decreases the lifetime of the refractory lining. In spite of these facts a reasonably way to control arsenic in metal, and therefore in the anode, is taking, action in the converting step. The effects of oxygen and arsenic content in metal, arsenic in white metal and basicity index of the slag upon the distribution coefficient of arsenic between metal and slag were investigated at pilot and industrial levels. The best results are obtained for metals around 7,000 ppm oxygen and 0.3 basicity index slag, which results in a 5.7 distribution coefficient for a 5,800 - 7,100 ppm arsenic content in white metal, 18%-24% CaO slag at 1473 - 1523K. Furthermore, no significant/visible refractory wear has been realized.

This study investigates the use of a horizontally- baffled column (7.6 cm inside diameter by 344.2 cm high) to reduce the ash content of a high ash bituminous coal. Tests were carried out to determine how the baffled column responded to changes in feedrate, reagent dosage, and feed quality, and to compare its performance with a conventional column installation in an operating plant. In this paper, the results of this investigation will be reviewed and discussed.
