INTRODUCTION The level of analysis for the selection of extraction practices and equipment for surface mining differs significantly from that found in underground mining. In underground mines, manufacturers establish the operating ranges of the equipment, such as continuous miners, loaders, and boring machines, based upon required clearances. Even in conventional mining, the drilling and blasting operation is usually based upon experience. The selection of extraction methods and equipment for surface mining is more complex. Since the equipment is not as confined as in deep mining, and the topography tends to be highly variable over the limits of the mining property, primary extraction equipment must be sized according to reach and capacity. Further, due to the depositional characteristics of the over- burden, drilling and blasting patterns must be well- designed to provide proper fragmentation. The following sections provide a general outline for the selection of surface excavation practices and equipment. The topics covered include drilling and blasting and the selection of both primary extraction equipment (draglines and stripping shovels) and secondary extraction equipment (bulldozers, scrapers, and front-end loaders). EXCAVATION FUNDAMENTALS Before discussing surface excavation, a few concepts need to be defined. A bank cubic yard of material is equal to one cubic yard as it lies in its natural or undisturbed state. A loose cubic yard is that portion of a bank yard that after being disturbed has expanded to measure one cubic yard. Swell is the volume increase of a material when it is removed from the natural state. Finally, load factor is the percentage decrease in the density of a material from its natural state to a loose state. Table 1 summarizes these concepts for various materials. When the amount of overburden to be removed to meet a predetermined production rate is established, a suitable bucket size for the primary stripping equipment must be calculated. The following equation can be used: NBSIZE = TBC/[(OF) (BF)] (1) where NBSIZE is the actual bucket capacity after considering the swell percentage, the bucket fill factor, and the operating efficiency; TBC is the theoretical bucket capacity (TBC = COB/NTCPM); OF is the operating efficiency; BF is the bucket fill factor; COB is the cubic yards of overburden to be removed; NTCPM is the number of theoretical cycles per month [NTCPM = (SMH) (3600)/(CT)]; SMH is the scheduled monthly hours; and CT is the cycle time in seconds. FRAGMENTATION PROCEDURES Drilling Where the strength of overburden material is such that blasting is required prior to excavation, drilling is conducted before using explosives. Two methods of drilling are found in mining-percussion and rotary. Penetration of overburden by percussion drilling is carried out by successive impacts of the bit into the rock. Emphasis in this section will be placed on rotary drilling, because for surface mining it is the most versatile form of overburden penetration. Rotary drilling is conducted by rotating a rigid string of tubular rods to which a rock-cutting bit is attached. The drilling energy is supplied by rotation as well as thrust and the cutting action consists of abrasion, scraping, spalling, or chipping. The size range for rotary-drilled blastholes is from 4 in. to 15 in., with 9 in. and 12 in. being common sizes. There are two types of bits used for rotary drilling-drag and rolling cutter. Drag bits are applicable in soft to medium-soft shales or their equivalents. Since their effectiveness is dependent upon a successful scraping action, drilling thrust is lower for drag bits than for rolling cutter bits; the opposite is true for torque requirements. The bits are usually fitted with replace- able tungsten-carbide cutters. Rolling cutter bits, though available in a two-cone configuration, are usually of the three-cone style (Table 2). The rolling cones have either large steel teeth for drilling through soft formations or small tungsten-car- bide inserts for drilling through hard formations. Table 3 relates bit size and weight to the strength of the rock. The major advantage of rotary drilling is its rapid drilling rate. This is due to the fact that, unlike percussion drilling, rock penetration is uniform with depth. In anticipation of the flooding of an adjacent dolomitic groundwater compartment, five rough parallel sided boundary plugs at 58 and 50levels have been designed to resist safely hydrostatic heads of 1500and 1250 metres, respectively, over a service life of 100 years. Following a description of the engineering properties of the surrounding rocks, the paper details the design considerations relating to structural length and strength, hydraulic gradient, rock mass watertightness, constituent materials of mortar intruded concrete, pregrouting of permeable discontinuities within the surrounding rock mass, a bentonite barrier to resist aggressive mine water, plug tightening and design performance requirements. Routine quality control tests include permeability of the rock mass, fluidity, bleed and strength development of the intruded mortar, and temperature of the intruded concrete during curing. A special test programme includes determination of strength and stiffness of cored concrete and rock samples, shear strength of the rock/plug interface and associated in situ contact stress in order toe stimate the load safety factor against plug failure by shear.

In November 2016, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake caused more than 100,000 cubic meters of rock and debris to tumble down and bury the transportation infrastructure below Ohau Point in New Zealand. All routes between the northern and southern portions of South Island were severed. To undertake the rebuilding efforts, the New Zealand government established North Canterbury Transport Infrastructure Recovery (NCTIR) – an alliance to repair the road and rail networks between Picton and Christchurch. NCTIR’s aim was to have the road open by Christmas 2017, but work also continued into 2018 to complete a number of safety improvements along the highway. The presentation will review the initial remediation attempts, the necessity to re-evaluate the original efforts, the need to incorporate techniques that were “outside-the-box” and different from traditional methods, and the logistics and planning that were required to complete the work safely. INTRODUCTION Shortly after midnight on Monday 14th November, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the small South Island settlement of Waiau in North Canterbury, 100km north of Christchurch. The quake was the largest in New Zealand since the magnitude 7.8 Dusky Sound earthquake in 2009 (GNS 2016). While shaking was widespread with over 15,000 recorded ‘felt reports,’ the worst shaking occurred about 50 seconds after the quake rupturing started. The energy of the tremor progressed north over several minutes with surface rupture recorded on a total of 21 faults. The length of all the fault ruptures combined was close to 100km (GNS 2016). The degree of ground shaking was high, recorded as Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) Level 8 – Severe. This level of shaking causes considerable damage in ordinary buildings with partial collapse including fall of chimneys, factory stacks, columns, monuments, walls, etc. At a human level, people experience difficulty standing; while furniture and appliances shift. Geologically, the damage depends on the geological setting. In Kaikoura and the surrounding area, especially the coastal highway State Highway 1, north and south of the town, many of the slopes consist of over steepened weathered, fractured greywacke. During the quake, the shaking caused significant and widespread damage with a total of 26 major slips (and many smaller slips); closing both State Highway 1 and the Main North Rail Line between Picton and Christchurch.

Historically bauxite-based refractories have been used in applications where andalusite-based refractories could work. Bauxite-based refractories were chosen over andalusite-based refractories mainly because of the availability of low-cost Chinese bauxite and also because many furnaces were designed by international companies that cannot easily access high-quality products. Currently, the availability of low-cost bauxite is under threat as a result of high export duties and tariffs as well as restrictions on the amount of material that China allows to be exported. South Africa is a major producer of andalusite, and this guarantees stability with respect to both availability and price. Refractories based on andalusite have an added economic advantage over bauxite-based refractories in that unlike bauxite, which requires high-temperature calcination before use, andalusite is used in its raw state. This paper constitutes a literature study of the merits, both technical and economic, of using refractories based on andalusite compared to bauxite-based refractories. For the last 150 years, subsidence damage to the surface has been an unavoidable phenomenon associated with underground coal mining. In particular, the mechanization of mining methods in multiple seam mining and the concentration of mining activities in densely populated European metropolitan areas (e.g., Ruhr, Upper Silesian industrial region) have led to mining having a very strong influence on the earth?s surface. In both these regions, surface subsidence of more than 20m has been reported up to now in comparison to the original state. Underground coal mining in these regions strongly impairs all kinds of surface use, such as urban and industrial development, infrastructure (roads, waterways, and railways) and pipelines?without restricting the functionality of those objects to a greater extent. Demanding and, in some cases, globally unique engineering solutions have been developed and implemented for this purpose. The previously mentioned mining and industrial regions are still very strongly characterized by the (increasingly declining) coal industry and will remain dependent to a large extent and for an indefinite period on artificial drainage measures because subsidence that has already occurred is irreversible. This paper will primarily discuss the prediction of subsidence that is caused by intensive multiple seam mining and its influence on surface objects (e.g., underground pipelines). However, an approach for predicting ground uplifts due to rising mine water as a consequence of mine closures will also be described.

The Systems Conveyance and Operations Program (SCOP) is being implemented to convey tertiary-treated effluent to Lake Mead near Las Vegas, Nevada. The Reach 3 Tunnel Project is part of SCOP. The tunnel?s planned location along and across the Las Vegas Wash creates challenging tunneling conditions. A number of feasible excavation and initial support methods are being considered during the final design stage. This paper describes how the tunnel construction options were refined based on anticipated tunneling conditions and compatibility between tunnel excavation and initial support methods. A brief description of the most significant characteristics of the anticipated ground conditions is included for the purpose of discussion.

"Generation and removal of fines are considered in the context of the mill and classifier as a single-unit process in which grinding rates and mechanisms, mill residence time distribution, circulating load, and classifier performance all interact to effect the overall grinding circuit productivity. Required process design specifications are identified, and a computer assisted design procedure for application of hydrocyclones in closed circuit grinding is presented. Mining education has received almost continuous discussion since its inception and most people engaged in the mining industry and in mining education feel at some time the urge and necessity to express their views. This paper is not a comprehensive survey of past and present practices and accepted principles, but a personal opinion of the form mining education should take at university level. It is expressed because of a dissatisfaction with the existing courses offered to students. It is hoped to provoke discussionand bring forth guidance to those engaged in mining education. After all, students spend four or five years at a university and it is desirable that the graduate should be something more than just those many years older at the end of his course.POST GRADUATE EMPLOYMENTThe first problem confronting the university should, be to discover what the mining industry wants and expects or graduates. This must influence the university course and yet universities have done little to seek this information, and if suggestions have been offered by industry; universities appear to have made little use of them. At Great Boulder Gold Mines Ltd. a number of attempts were made to remove water soluble copper and iron salts from calcined pyritic concentrates but variou~ problems arose and the methods were abandoned.A method of rapid washing has been developed and although some problems still exist a workable process was established which resulted in substantial savings of reagents used for the cyanidation of calcine.INTRODUCTIONIn the Great Boulder flowsheet crude ore is ground in cyanide solution, then thickened, agitated and subjected to two stage filtering. Secondary filter discharge is pulped with flotation circuit water, gassed with sulphur dioxide to precipitate soluble gold and activate pyrite, and after the addition of copper sulphate and xanthate, the pyrite and tellurides are recovered by flotation. Flotation tailings are thickened and pumped to the disposal area and concentrates are calcined in Edwards roasters. Calcine is washed to remove water soluble copper and iron salts and the washings pumped to the flotation section where the copper is used as an activator. The washed calcine is cyanided and returned to the crude ore circuit via the thickeners. A data-acquisition system was designed by the Bureau of Mines to monitor five detectors with radon continuously flowing through each. These detectors could be monitored up to 12 times an hour, but were only monitored according to a preset time, thus allowing radon to be monitored continuously in a uranium mine. The counter can be set to monitor each detector for any period of time up to 16.5 minutes. This allows very low concentrations to be monitored longer to reduce statistical error. There would be no upper limit in radon concentration that could be monitored, but there would be a lower limit of 50 picocuries per liter (pCi/l). Each detector was cylibrated in the laboratory by the Lucas flask method. Multiple samples were taken at two different concentrations, and the correction factor for each detector was determined by a least squares fit of the data. To verify the calibrations, a series of measurements at several concentrations were made against a constant source. Our agreement at low radon concentrations (300 pCi/i) with the two-filter method as within 3 percent; thus, the total error would be this difference plus the two-filter error. At high concentrations the coefficient of variation ranged between 2.1 and 9.8 percent for the five different detector units.

Today, it is accepted that rock fragmentation by blasting affects loading and hauling operations, and also directly influences on downstream processes such as crushing and grinding. In this research, the influence of rock fragmentation by blasting on the performance of three mills at Gol-e-Gohar iron ore mine No 1 was studied. Firstly, the fragmentation of conventional blast patterns in iron ore (5 × 6 m) was studied using image analysis and the performances of three mills were monitored. Then, a new blast pattern (4 × 5 m) was designed and nine blasts were carried out using this pattern. The Bureau of Mines study indicates that land utilized by the mining industry for mineral extraction and processing from 1930 through 1980 amounted to 5.7 million acres, or 0.25 percent of the land mass in the United States. Land reclaimed by the industry during the same period was 2.7 million acres, or 47 percent of the land utilized. Land use by the mining industry includes surface land used for excavation or mining, for waste from underground mining, and for wastes from milling or processing operations. Data on land use for disposal of overburden waste from surface coal mines and on areas affected by subsidence associated with underground mining are included for the period 1930-71 only. The 10 leading States in total land used for mining over the 51-year period were, in decreasing order, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois, West Virginia, Florida, Indiana, California, Alabama, and Missouri. Seven mineral commodities accounting for 92 percent of land use are, in decreasing order, bituminous coal, sand and gravel, stone, phosphate rock, clay, copper, and iron ore, all predominately surface mined. Bituminous coal production was responsible for nearly half of the total area utilized. Reclamation of mined lands and waste disposal sites over the reporting period was largely on lands utilized in mining bituminous coal; 75 percent of the land used for bituminous coal production was reclaimed.

In the synthesis and sintering processes to obtain superhard materials, such as diamond and cubic boron nitride, deformable ceramic capsule is used as gasket to transmit and support the required high pressures and high temperatures, HPHT. The ceramics materials for these capsules should have special physics and chemical characteristics such as refractoriness, shear strength and compressibility. In this work, Bridgman?s anvil made of hard metal or speed steel was used to characterize some ceramics materials in terms of their maximum compressible thickness. Tests were also performed with different resin polymers used as binding mixture with ceramics powder. Chemical analyses and investigations through scanning electronic microscopic (SEM), X-ray and real tests for the synthesis of diamond were also performed. The results showed that local Brazilian calcite can be successfully used in the manufacture of HPHT gaskets.

The flotation response of a Pb-Zn sulphide ore from the Rosh Pinah Mine (Namibia) was studied in the presence of inorganic depressants such as sodium cyanide and zinc sulphate. Poor flotation selective was observed in the rougher concentrate of the galena circuit despite the use of excessive amount of sodium cyanide. Batch flotation tests have shown that the use of cyanide alone is not efficient for the depression of sphalerite from the Rosh Pinah ore when milling is carried out according to the current plant particle size distribution. The use of both cyanide and zinc sulphate improved the selectivity between galena and sphalerite much better than cyanide alone. Flotation selectivity is limited by the mineralogical texture of the Rosh Pinah ore sample. Microscopic analysis has shown that the presence of sphalerite in the galena concentrate is also due to poor liberation between galena and sphalerite, especially in the middlings. Hence selectivity could be improved by regrinding the rougher concentrate prior to the cleaning stage. Keywords- Sulphide ores, Flotation, Flotation depressant, Mineralogy.

The effect of rain size on the creep behavior of an austenitic iron-base alloy has been studied at 1300° F under conditions of constant stress. The average grain diameter varied between 9 and 190 p (ASTM 10.7-2). The subgrain size and apparent activation energy for creep were not found to depend in any systematic manner on gain size. The variation of c, with grain size is believed to he associated particularly with grain boundary generation of dislocations which becomes more important with increasing temperatures. SEEMINGLY inconsistent experimental findings have led to a certain amount of confusion concerning the effect of grain size on creep behavior. The confusion is attributed to a lack of test results obtained over sufficiently wide ranges in grain size, stress, and temperature. Experimental results presented in this paper and results available in the literature1-5 show a consistent behavior and lead to a unified concept for the dependence of secondary-or steady-state creep rate on grain size. In accordance with this concept, which is substantiated experimentally, secondary-creep rate should increase with increasing grain diameter at low creep temperatures, leading to greater creep strengths for fine-grained materials. At intermediate temperatures the secondary-creep rate should decrease to a minimum and then increase as the grain size is increased. At high creep temperatures the secondary-creep rate should decrease with increasing grain size, leading to greater creep strengths for coarse-grained materials. Whether a temperature is high or low for creep in a metal or alloy depends primarily on its melting temperature. MATERIAL AND TEST PROCEDURES The material tested was an austenitic iron-base alloy of the following composition (wt pct): C, 0.005; N, 0.017; Mn, 1.26; Ni, 14.21; and Cr, 17.18. Two 15 -lb ingots were forged and hot-rolled to 5/8-in.-diam bars which were then cold-rolled and cold-swaged to a diameter of 0.49 in. These were sectioned into 3-in.-long blanks and heat-treated at various temperatures to obtain different grain sizes. The procedures employed and the results obtained are summarized in Table I. The secondary treatment at 1400° F followed the primary treatment without intermediate cooling to room temperature. This final treatment was employed to minimize various effects arising from heating to different temperatures during the primary treatment, particularly differences in intragranular dislocation structure, segregation of interstitial atoms at grain boundaries, and density of grain boundary ledges. The intragranular dislocation structure was examined by electron transmission metallography after each of the treatments described in Table I. Isolated dislocations and a few tangles were observed but no evidence of subgrains was found after any of the treatments. No grain-size effect was evident on the density and distribution of dislocations. Stabilization of grain boundary structure is particularly important because, as will be discussed later, grain boundaries influence high-temperature creep behavior. Stowing has been successfully used in many countries as a means of controlling surface subsidence, minimi ing incidences of spontaneous combustion, maintaining gate road stability and maximising coal recovery.Australian experience in stowing is limited but in the future increased extraction of thicker and/or multiple seams by longwall operations and resolution of conflict of alternative land u&apos;ses may necessitate the use of stowing in coal mining. At present there is little incentive for mining companies to introduce and operate a stowing system because costs have to be borne by the individual companies and benefits spill over to society and the State. Cost sharing by the industry and State incentives may overcome the problem of cost disincentive.

AngloGold Ashanti Metallurgy has recently been involved in the successful installation of intelligent, expert control systems on the milling circuits. The benefits of expert systems in these highly interactive circuits are obvious. Existing comminution tools, which have been developed and can now be incorporated into online control, include improved modelling techniques and understanding, robust and competent simulation methods, sampling techniques, and optimization methods. The minerals processing industry has seen the benefits of predominantly research-based centres turning their focus to commercial applications of comminution circuit modelling packages, which in turn can be utilized within expert control systems. Expert mill control has been successfully installed at AngloGold Ashanti South Africa?s Mponeng and Kopanang Gold Plants. Expert control has also been installed at AngloGold Ashanti?s West African Sadiola Mine operation. The implementation of the systems has produced a number of positive outcomes. Plant surveys usually result in the identification of sub-optimal areas, and the control philosophy is then configured to ensure that these areas (along with the entire circuit) are optimized and maintained. Outdated PID loops have generally resulted in oscillatory control with large amplitude deviations from set-point. Significant improvements in SAR Metallurgy operations have been realized, firstly through achieving stability in the load and cyclone control, and secondly through online identification and implementation of optimized set-point conditions for mill mass, discharge density, etc. Soft sensors are configured to accurately estimate parameters that were historically not measurable, viz. breakage rate, mill load condition, onlinekWh/t-75 microns, mill discharge density and cyclone overflow grading. The Mponeng Plant system achieved circuit stability and improved overall grind. The Plant was able to pay back the control installation after 3 months, based on the additional recovery obtained from the finer grind. The system at Kopanang Plant has also resulted in enhanced plant recovery as a result of a finer grind and a lower residue gold content. The payback for this system was calculated at approximately 6 months. AngloGold Ashanti Metallurgy is currently expanding the installation of expert control to its other operations. It is also evaluating the performance of various suppliers of advanced control systems.

"Resistivity measurements of minerals in the laboratory are commonly made with a low DC voltage source. Common test voltages specified in the ASTM Standard D257 are 100, 250, 500, 1000, 2500, 5000, 10000 and 15000 V, however 100 and 500 V are the most frequently used. Resistivity results obtained in the laboratory have been used to infer the electrical behaviour of minerals undergoing electrostatic separation. However because the voltages employed in electrostatic separation in the plant are of the order of thousands of volts, typically greater than 15000 V, whether the laboratory results are applicable as a predictor of plant performance is a critical question. It is unclear whether resistivity values taken at a low voltage are characteristic of those seen in electrostatic separation, in which the minerals are exposed to a much higher voltage. No definitive answer could be found in the literature.In this work, the resistivities of zircon, rutile and ilmenite were measured in a corona field for the first time. The measurement principle was based on a technique developed to measure fly ash resistivity in electrostatic precipitators, however the test apparatus and findings are novel.Resistivities of rutile and zircon were found to be easy to measure. The values measured in a corona field were several orders of magnitude less than those obtained with a dc voltage of 100 V. Evidence of back corona was observed with zircon. When the voltage drop was greater than the sample layer could withstand a localised electrical stress developed, resulting in a voltage breakdown, at which point a sudden surge of corona current (back corona) was detected in the sample layer. Rutile, on the other hand, exposed to the same conditions as that of zircon (i.e. same temperature and applied voltage) did not exhibit any sign of back corona. Its resistivity across the range of test voltages (14 to 33 kV) remained fairly constant."
