El presente texto analiza la problemática del oro en Madre de Dios a través del informe presentado por el Ministerio de Energía y minas en 1979 donde se debe brindar oportunidad a todo aquel que desee explotar los recursos naturales, sin que afecte el desarrollo normal de sus actividades. El problema se origina como consecuencia de la "Ley de Promoción aurífera" que vive ajena a la realidad del Departamento de Madre de Dios y desaprovecha la tecnología disponible. Para ello, se requiere de una política aurífera donde se busca crear nuevos recursos, considerando el canon al oro, madera, castaña, pago de peaje, aportación económica de los peajes y escala de concesiones de recursos naturales. Asimismo, se debe crear más de 50 mil puestos de trabajo en minería aurífera, la empresa minera del oro, la construcción de un central hidroeléctrica y de una nueva ley aurífera.

Not only is the man credited with being the father of modern avalanche forecasting and safety in the United States, but he is also responsible for developing the avalauncher. This paper describes a series of small scale tests conducted to investigate the loading applied to a flat plate by the detonation of a cylindrical charge very close (between two and three charge radii from the center of the charge) to the structure. The testing used very small quantities of explosive (PETN): Two different series of tests were conducted. In the first test series, impulse loading on the target plate was investigated using three different sizes of charge. In the second series, pressure time profiles were determined. The charge size was 6 g or less. Impulse was found using high speed video of the target plate to determine its displacement as a function of time, from which initial plate velocity was obtained. Kolsky Bars, placed at the same distance from the charge as the target plate, were used to determine the free-field pressure time profile of the output of the charge at this distance. Two different types of target plates were used in the impulse study. One was just a plate while the other was a plate constrained with a steel frame.

Orebodies are defined in economic terms in that they must satisfy conditions determined by costs of mining, extraction and marketing before being so described. Despite this they have an essential chemical character as specialized products resulting from geochemical differentiation, and it is surprising that so little basic geochemical research has been carried out with respect to ore occurrence and that prospecting methods based on geochemical principles are not more widely applied.Many exploration geologists associate geochemistry with analytical techniques applied to the detection of dispersed traces of metals from actual orebodies. Geochemical research, applied to economic geology, goes far beyond this limited field and the purpose of this paper is to discuss aspects of such research and its use in formulating exploration principles.THE GEOCHEMICAL BACKGROUND TO MINERAL OCCURRENCE AND EXPLORATIONThe three aspects of economic mineral deposits to which geochemical research can be of use in determining ore guides are genesis, control of deposition and mode of dispersion from orebodies after emplacement. A belt-wearable self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR) manufactured by the CSE Corp. and designated the "SR-1OO" was evaluated for safety in the underground mine environment by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The evaluation consisted of laboratory tests on the chemicals contained in the unit and field trials to simulate the mine environment. This report summarizes the test results and compares the results with those from earlier tests with chemical and compressed oxygen self-rescuers. It was concluded that the new SCSR did not pose any different or more severe hazards than the earlier units. In view of the mine-proven safety record of the SCSR's now in service, no reason could be found to disallow use of the belt-wearable unit.

A great deal of effort has been expended on how to optimize conventional water cooling circuits in furnace cooling elements, and the results have been largely satisfactory. However, there is a general agreement that the proximity of high-pressure water passages to the flow of molten furnace products is a safety concern. Nonetheless there exists little alternative to the formula: increasing furnace integrity implies the incorporation of more extensive forced-convection water cooling systems. Recent developments in evaporative cooling technology have resulted in the development of a high-capacity heat pipe capable of operating under the thermally intense environments of a metallurgical furnace. The system functions using several kg of a working fluid (water) in total, has no moving parts, and allows for a significant reduction in cooling water requirements. Full-scale pilot tests of a copper tap hole and slag launder were done in 2003 and2005, with detailed results given in this paper.

When a large area of open gob collapses suddenly, a windblast is produced that can cause considerable damage throughout the infrastructure of a mine. In a few cases, the windblast has been accompanied by ignitions of methane and/or coal dust. This paper describes the conduct and results of laboratory tests involving the compression of mixtures of air, methane and coal dust under a falling weight and while allowing controlled escape of the mixture. The transient responses on pressure and temperature sensors were recorded. In addition to an analysis of those records, the paper highlights those conditions in which ignitions occurred.

Blasts should be designed so as to maximise the percentage of charges which shoot to a free face (Le, to a pronounced rock/air interface).Free faces should be rough, parallel and reasonably near to blastholes and, very importantly, concavely·biplanar relative to the charges (see Fig. 6b). The presence of biplanar free faces requires that each charge fragments and detaches its quota of the burden rock before the detonation of:1. later-firing adjacent charges in single-row blasts, and2. dependent charges in multi-row blasts.In multi-row blasts, biplanar faces are best achieved:1. by drilling blastholes on equilateral triangular grids,2. by selecting a VI, V2 or V3 initiation sequence, and3. by using down-the-hole delays.Biplanar faces start to be created only when the conventional value of effective blasthole spacing/effective burden distance (Se/Be) increases beyond about 2.4. Values of Se/Be less than about 2.4 result in planar free faces. Where biplanar faces are created, conventional values of Se/Be are invalid and appreciably greater than real values of Se/Be.

THIS PUBLICATION is the third to be prepared as a result of a cooperative project by the Bureau of Ships and the Bureau of Mines for accumulating literature published on zirconium and hafnium. The undertaking also resulted in the establishment of an information center on zirconium and hafnium at the Bureau of Mines station at Albany, Oreg., for the use of research organizations and others. The present bibliography consists of references (with abstracts) to pertinent literature on zirconium. The first publication in this series was Information Circular 7771, Bibliography of Zirconium, published in April 1957. It consists of 969 abstracted reports and 645 U.S. and foreign patents. The second publication, called a supplement to Information Circular 7771, is numbered Information Circular 7830 and consists of 844 abstracted reports and 62 U.S. and foreign patents. It was published in October 1958.

It is known that Mg can act as a catalyst/solvent in the high pressure high temperature diamond synthesis. However, above pressure levels of the order of 7 GPa, and temperatures from 1700 ? 1800oC, it was not possible yet to use Mg for the industrial production of diamond. A possible alternative is the use of MgNi based alloys. However, owing to the great Mg reactivity, it was consider, so far, a difficult task to deal with such alloys. The present work presents successful results regarding the production of MgNi alloys, with different composition, at high pressure conditions. The behavior of the alloys and their microstructural characterization is analyzed.

The Cuajone and Toquepala copper projects are located in the extreme southern area of Peru. Since 1960, Southern Peru Copper Company has operated the Toquepala open -pit mine, flotation mill, 110 smelter, townsites, power plants, and railroad. Toquepala and 10, the smelter and port location, are connected by a 110-mile-long (176 lun) railroad. Much of Toquepala's infrastructure has been used for the Cuajone project. Cuajone, at an elevation of 11,400 ft (3475 m), required five standard-guage railroad tunnels with a combined length of 17 miles (27.2 km) to connect with Toquepala so concentrates could be shipped to the no smelter. The total cost of Cuajone is estimated at $726 million for a designed annual capacity of 180,000 tons of copper, equivalent to about $4,000 per ton of installed production capacity. This relatively low cost per ton, by today's standards, has been made possible through the use of the 110-to Toquepala railroad, the ability to expand the 110 copper smelter, and other favorable factors. To mine the 468 million tons of copper sulfide or e at a grade of 1.0% copper, approximately 24 1 million tons of waste were stripped- before mining of ore to supply the new Botiflaca 45, 000 ton per day concentrator. The mining rate must exceed 300,000 tons of waste plus ore per day to maintain the 45, 0 00 tpd sulfide ore milling rate which was to be reached at the end of 1976. Waste stripping is done with 15 cu yd electric shovels and 120 -ton trucks. Ore mining is done with 8 and 9 yd shovels. A railroad connects the pit with the 60 in. by 89 in. Allis-Chalmers gyratory crusher. Side-dump railroad cars of 50.cu yd capacity dump onto a 0 16 ft 9 in. long (5. 1 m) grizzly inclined at 40º with 7 to 8 in. (178 to 203 rnrn) bar spacings. The grizzly is divided into two 22 ft 4 in. (6.8 m) wide sections and two side -dump railroad cars discharge simultaneously into the 150-ton capacity dump pocket. A Barco rock manipulator is used for breaking or removing oversize from the dump pocket. The bin receiving the grizzly undersize has a capacity of 5,000 tons, and the pocket beneath the crusher holds 900 tons. Each is equipped with an 84 in. apron feeder, which feeds a 60 in. (1.52 m) conveyor belt to the 150,000 ton coarse ore stockpile, where the ore is distributed by a 72 in. (1. 83 m) tripper conveyor. "In the 1960’s, when large flotation machines appeared on the market, this was a part of a world-wide trend towards the use of ever larger machine units.One factor that has played a decisive part in this development is the increased of the amounts of ore that have to be handled as the exploitation of successively poorer ores becomes necessary. The advancing application of instrumentation and automation has worked in the same direction.In 1970, a working group was set up within Outokumpu Oy, for the purpose of flotation machine development. The principal task of this group was to be the design and development of- a new type of rotor of increased efficiency, especially for the dispersion of large amounts of air- a mechanical-pneumatic flotation machine of substantially larger size that existing plant.This development project required an extensive program of theoretical investigation and experimental studies at several concentration plants of the company.The commonest flotation machine presently used in the concentration plants of Outokumpu Oy is the VK-3. It is of the mechanical-pneumatic type, and the volume of its cell tanks is 2.5 m3 per shaft. This machine was developed within the company, and its first development phase i s represented by the OKKO 3, built for the Kotalahti concentrator in 1959. An existing 1 800 m long pipeline, which carried waste mica slurry from kaolin processing, is to be recommissioned. The mica solids throughput is to be substantially increased from 5.2 t/h up to a maximum of9.53 t/h, but with a typical throughput of around 7.5 t/h. Because of this throughput increase, it was unclear whether the existing 80 mm diameter pipe would be adequate. In addition, the pipe route is to be extended by 250 m to 2 050m, and its elevation at discharge to settling lagoons increased from 66.2 m to 80 m. The pipeline hydraulics of waste mica slurry were investigated for the 80 mm diameter pipe using the Saskatchewan Research Council?s (SRC) Two-Layer Flow Model, for the maximum mica solids throughput of 9.53t/h. The pipe operating velocity was compared with the predicted deposit velocity for several mica concentrations, ranging from 20% to 50% by weight. Estimates were made of the total differential pressure across the proposed2 050 m long pipeline, as well as the power imparted to the slurry by the pump, and the specific energy consumption (SEC). Two pipe diameters were assumed: 80 mm when no mica wall deposit is present, and 70 mm when there is a 5mm mica wall deposit. This parameter has a significant effect on the determination of the appropriate pipe operating conditions. For the pipe operating velocity to remain adequately above the deposit velocity (and therefore for the heterogeneous flow pattern to prevail in either horizontal or inclined pipe), it was concluded that if the newly commissioned pipeline contains no mica wall deposit, the pipe should initially be operated at a mica concentration of between 20% and 25% by weight, probably with a target mica concentration of about 23%. This investigation was conducted to identify the principle causes of spoil instability problems in the Eastern Coal Province. The study was also conducted to develop a matrix to predict the strength and groundwater parameters necessary to conduct stability analyses on a proposed reclamation scheme. Suggestive methods to reduce spoil instability potential are also included. Numerous physical property, strength, compressibility, chemical and mineralogical tests were conducted on mine spoil samples obtained from 11 different surface mine sites. Site characteristics that influence the position of the post reclamation groundwater table were identified. Distinct regions within the Eastern Coal Province with high incidences of surface mine slides or high landslide susceptibility were identified. The application of the predictive matrices developed in this study is for surface mine sites mined and reclaimed in general accordance with the Surface Mine Reclamation Control Act of 1977. A review of current mining practices and the relative effect on spoil stability is included.

The Downhole Seismic Imaging consortium was initiated by the Geological Survey of Canada and three Canadian mining companies to assess the usefulness of borehole seismic techniques for the exploration of massive sulphide deposits within areas of steeply dipping stratigraphy. Field tests were conducted over two sub-economic massive sulphide deposits located in Norman West, Ontario, and Halfmile Lake, New Brunswick, using various shot configurations and a three-component borehole receiver array. The Norman West deposit, or structures associated with the deposit, produce detectable seismic reflections as far away as 1500 m. However, these reflections are difficult to distinguish from fault reflections and lithological contacts near the base of the Sudbury Igneous Complex. At Halfmile Lake, the rock properties are favourable for direct orebody detection. The Halfmile Lake deposit has a clear but relatively complex seismic signature on the downhole data, showing not only P-wave reflections, but also strong reflected S-waves and modeconverted waves. Such prominent S-waves and converted waves have not been recognized previously in borehole or surface seismic data acquired over massive sulphide deposits. These waves add complexity to the interpretation but provide additional imaging capabilities. Reflected S-waves and converted waves should be considered when designing seismic surveys for mineral exploration.

Of late there have been various papers published on this subject by various authorities, in which certain definite factors influencing slime settlement have been brought forward. As the principles set forth by these writers are of great interest, and have, in most cases, been generally accepted, the author will review them in the hope that by discussion some more knowledge may be brought to bear on many points connected with the subject.The definition of slime at the present time is not a standard one, and varies according to different authorities, some defining slime as ore crushed to such a fineness that it will pass through a screen of standard size, say 150 or 200-mesh, in water (1, 2);others as that part of the finely-crushed material which is in the physical condition which causes it to remain in. suspension in water, and possesses pr?perties which render it almost unleachable (3). Authorities seem divided on this point, but of late American writers seem to prefer the former definition.
