INTRODUCTION Many excellent papers have been written and presented regarding agricultural lime and the subject has been covered extensively in books concerning soil science, fertilizing, limestone, etc. We felt challenged to construct a paper that wouldn’t merely be a repetition of past presentations. Therefore, we chose to begin with factors having the most impact on plant growth realizing that the audience is likely to be relatively unfamiliar with this subject. So, we decided to dig deep into the roots of soil and plant growth science in order to better understand the significant role of limestone in this important area. The soil with the higher plants growing upon it forms an open and dynamic ecosystem in which there is flux of energy and material (heat, light, water, nutrients, mineral and organic matter, organisms). Plants root in the soil and then take up oxygen for root respiration, yielding energy for nutrient uptake, water for turgescence and transpiration and use in photosynthesis and the mineral nutrients needed for the synthesis of organic matter. Above the ground the plant takes in light energy and heat using them in photosynthesis to assimilate atmospheric CO2. Photosynthesis is the basic life process of creation. However, we will look at the root room where soil, water, air, and heat economy and the supply of nutrients determine soil fertility and the important role lime plays here. Location is the primary point to be considered when discussing agriculture (climate and soil); secondly, the dynamic and mobility of the minerals (plant nutrients) in the soil; and thirdly the conversion of organic substances into humus. And then there is a great deal of water involved in the growing process. In order to produce 1 kg of dry plant substance, 300 to 800 kg of water must be pumped through the plant and is then lost by transpiration. Cereals, vegetables, and sugar beets consume between 400 to 500 kg of water during the growing process and long-growing crops, such as alfalfa and clover, can consume 600 to 800 kg of water per kg of finished product. Without water, a plant cannot grow. (Reference 1)

"The theoretical technique of computational modeling and the experimental determination of the enthalpy of adsorption of a ligand molecule onto a mineral surface deliver the same output parameters and, therefore, complement each other in investigating the affinity of different ligand types for mineral surfaces.This study ran parallel experimental tests and computational calculations to determine the enthalpy of adsorption of a series of increasing chain length xanthates onto a pyrite surface. The outcomes showed that, while the absolute energy values were different, the trends were similar. Both computational and experimental approaches showed that the extent of the interaction of the xanthate molecule increases with increasing carbon chain length. The computational values were larger than the experimental values, which could be explained, in part, by the addition of water to the computational system, which resulted in a decrease in the heat of adsorption on the (100) surface, compared to the adsorption of the collector in a vacuum. The computational method showed that, in the case of the pyrite (100) surface, the most exothermic reaction was obtained when the two xanthate sulfur atoms bridged two pyrite 5-coordinated iron atoms. The (111) surface was found to be more reactive and different adsorption mechanisms were predicted for each of the C2, C3, C4 and C5 chain length xanthates.The experimentally determined exothermic increase in heat of adsorption for the addition of each CH2 group was found to be -8.17 kJ/mol. The contribution of the thiol head group was -34.9 kJ/mol. Previous studies on self-assembled monolayers have shown that these values are compatible with lateral interactions between CH2 groups and the exclusion of water. This study provides a rigorous experimental and computational approach which is intended to afford confidence in modelled data for the screening of new ligands for flotation processes.INTRODUCTIONComputational modelling is a fast and cost-effective method of screening collector molecules for the efficacy of their adsorption onto mineral surfaces. However, it is desirable to measure the computational outputs against experimental outputs to check for congruency. Computational modelling and experimental microcalorimetry both deliver the same output parameter: the energy of adsorption of the molecule onto the solid surface. These techniques are therefore ideally suited to complement one another in investigating the affinity of the interaction between collector molecules and mineral surfaces."

Because of complex geological environments, a number of coal reserves occur in inclined or dipping coal seams in certain parts of the world. Longwall top coal caving using split-level a singleentry panel system (SSPS) has been widely used for extracting such coal seams with large thicknesses (greater than 6 m) in China because SSPS can reduce or mitigate problems of coal outbursts, gate road deformations, overturning of shields, downhill sliding of shearer and armored face conveyor (AFC), and so forth, during mining of inclined coal seams. Depth of yield is the range of yield coal from the rib of the pillar to the boundaries where yield ends. It plays a significant role in maintaining the gate pillar stability. This paper presents a study on the stability of an unconventional water-obstruction gate pillar (UWGP) formed by SSPS to prevent water inrush in mining of an inclined thick coal seam in a coal mine in China. As the shape of this pillar is non-cuboidal, nonparallelepiped, a conventional empirical or analytical method is not applicable for studying its stability.

These proceedings consist of papers presented at two Bureau of Mines Technology Transfer Seminars for the purpose of disseminating recent advances in mining technology related to coal mine fire and explosion prevention. Primary, although not exclusive, emphasis is placed on underground coal mining. The papers address research accomplishments ranging from methods for detecting mine fires to remote sealing systems for extinguishing coal mine fires. Each paper represents the current state-of-the-art in the respective research categories. Presentations include research occurring from both Bureau in-house and contract efforts.

Paper presented at the conference Economic geology in Europe and beyond II, models for mineral deposits in sedimentary basins, held in Keyworth, UK, 13-14 April 1994. The SW part of the Southern Uplands is a back-arc section of an accretionary thrust system, divided into structural blocks by major NE-SW shear zones and NW-SE faults forming the margins of Permian half-grabens. The highest arsenic levels in stream sediments (over 65 ppm) are associated with those blocks carrying brittle-ductile transition fabrics. Three factors combine to recomend the area as having potential for gold mineralisation: As-rich greywackes as country rock, felsic intrusions and a major shear zone. Selected stream sediments were analysed for gold using lead fire assay with ultra-pure flux and ICP-MS finish. Several localities showed over 15 ppb Au, the three most significant being within the hanging wall of the Orlock Bridge Fault and each having distinct characteristics

A three-dimensional (3D) electrode reactor combined with Fenton reagent was used for advanced treatment of coking wastewater from secondary biological treatment. Effects of some key factors on total organic carbon (TOC) removal rate were investigated, and the results were compared with those of the common three-dimensional electrode reactor. Experimental results showed that TOC removal rate could reach 51.7%, when optimal operating conditions were as follows: initial pH value 3.5, H2O2 dosage 17.6mmol/L, reaction time 90min and FeSO4·7H2O dosage 3.5mmol/L. Analytical results from UV absorption spectra indicated that the organic substances in the coking wastewater were well degraded by this system, which provided good experimental basis for the practical application of this process in the treatment of coking wastewater. This can be meaningful for the treatment of other kinds of wastewater.

Continuing with the effort of providing new and more effective exploration methods to the mining industry, where direct methods (drilling, cross-cutting, etc.) are not applicable, either for logistical or environmental reasons or because they are costly and sometimes ineffective, we present here a new seismic technique based on full wave recording of 3-D channel waves generated within the coal seam across a longwall. In the past two years we reported the application on In-Seam High Resolution Seismic Reflection (ISHRSR) and In-Seam Seismic Tomography (ISST) to map non-coal inclusions that disrupt the coal seam continuity. In the present paper we present a 3-D In-Seam Seismic Tomography (3-DTSST) method using 3-D channel waves recorded by three component high resolution geophones. The method allows to distinguish longitudinal and transversal components of the channel waves, similar to the spheroidal and toroidal modes for the free oscillations of the earth. The recording of these waves allows a more complete analysis of the free modal vibrations of channel waves, permitting a more complete inversion of the structure of the coal seam through which they travel. The full wave analysis provides additional insights of the detailed coal structure for larger, distances than for the ones previously reported using the one dimensional method. The refinement of the inversion software is also a contribution towards the better definition of the coal seam geometry and structures disturbing them such as sandstone channels, sandstone rolls, partings, mine voids, faults, fractures, etc. The method is illustrated with three case studies where subsequent mining revealed the virtues and limitations. The first example deals with the problem of mapping mine works in one side of a longwall panel which geometry is well known, to verify its applicability to map old mine works. The second example deals with a sandstone body that partially scoured the coal seam withing a longwall panel. The third shows an application of the method to map roof conditions in a longwall panel where this problem critically affected production scheduling and costs

The Anshan Iron and Steel Co. (AISC) broke its steelmaking design capacity in 1978, bringing its total production of steel products to 6.86 Mt. Located south of the industrial city of Shenyang, Liaoning Province, in northeastern China, it is by far China’s most important iron and steel complex, ranking twentieth among world centers. The complex represents a unique blend of old ecluipment and new ideas for increased production and improved products. Under a state plan, the Chinese hope to raise capacity to almost 15 Mt/a in the future. Originally started by the Japanese in the early 1920s, Anshan has had a rather turbulent 60-year history. It was disassembled by the Soviets after World War II, only to be reassembled by them in the 1950s. Production was also suppressed during the Cultural Revolution. Since the present-day organization, AISC, emerged, the center has experienced progressively improving conditions as well as increased production. Today, the center includes 10 blast furnaces, 24 open hearths, and two basic oxygen units, designed for 7 Mt/a ironmaking and 6.5 Mt/a steelmaking. In addition, it has six batteries of cokemaking facilities with combined 4.4-Mt/a capacity. Solid Iron Resources Anshan’s iron resources consist of a proven reserve base of over 7 Gt of 30~0 Fe, according to Kao Yang, president of the Anshan Iron Mining Co., a subsidiary of AI SC, Most of that, he continued, is amenable to surface mining. Five major mines located to the north and northeast of the city of Anshan are the principal iron ore producers. These mines trend in a somewhat circular manner and combined, represent an estimated 28.6 Ylt/a of ore capacity. In addition, some 2.2 Gt of magnesite, a necessary ingredient in steelmaking, are also part of the reserve base, according to Kao. Annual production is around .2 Mt/a of 47% magnesite, well over the steelmaking center’s annual requirements, Excess production is shipped to other steel-making centers. The largest of Anshau’s open-pit mines is the Chitashan operation with a design capacity of 8 Mt/a. Ore reserves here are well over a billion tons of 30% Fe. Earlier plans to expand production at this mine to 15 Mt/a, with the help of US Steel, have been temporarily shelved. The other mines in the district and their rated design capacity are: Kungchangling, 7 Mt/a; Donganshan, 6.4 Mt/a; Dakushan, 4.2 Mt/ti; and Yenchienshan, 3.0 Mt/a. The Kungchangling mine is the richest in terms of ore grade at 6076 Fe. Reserves are somewhat smaller at 100 Mt. The unit also operates a small shrinkage stoping operation. It has been noted in recent years that the pillars in some bord-and-pillar workings scale or spall. In due course this process may result in the collapse of the affected panels. This paper presents a methodology for assessing the long-term behaviour of such workings, employing a simple model of pillar deterioration by scaling. It is assumed that scaling causes a gradual reduction in pillar width, hence the safety factor of pillars reduces in time. It is also postulated that the process of scaling will be arrested if the coal rubble around the pillar reaches a critical height. The probability that the pillars will survive for a certain period of time, or indefinitely, can be estimated. This can be accomplished by using the log-normal distribution proposed by Salamon and Munro4todescribe the distribution of the apparent safety factor values at failure. If an estimate of the rate of scaling is known, it is also possible to quantify, using a Monte Carlo technique, the expected life of the pillars. The method also facilitates pillar design by specifying a probability of survival for a given number of years or, alternatively, for an indefinite period. Using the limited pool of available data, analyses show that the proposed model does not appear to be inconsistent with observed behaviour of pillars in the Vaal Basin. The crucial parameter is the rate of scaling. Back calculations from eleven cases suggest that the rate of spalling in the Vaal Basin is about 0.2 m/year. It is noteworthy that two further cases in the same area give significantly higher rates (0.85 m/year). Some underground observations in the Witbank area indicate considerably lower rates in the order of 0.02?0.04 m/year. Further areas for study are recommended. These include a study of old workings to determine the extent and rate of scaling in the various coal fields, an investigation into the possible relationship between scaling and the chemical composition of the coal. In addition, model studies will be required to assess the practical impact of the research findings.

THE oxidized ores of the Chief Consolidated Mining Co., in the Tintic mining district, have never yielded to metallurgical treatment by any standard method except smelting. These ores occur in comparatively small, irregular, siliceous replacements in limestone, and carry silver, lead, and gold as the principal valuable metals. But smelting methods. are unsatisfactory, as the lead smelters heavily penalize the large amount of silica in the ore, and the copper smelters do not pay for the lead in the ore; therefore, an alternative treatment method was sought. In 1916, a metallurgical research department was organized under; the direction of the writer. Many standard metallurgical methods were investigated but, on oxidized ore, none yielded extraction great enough to make its use feasible. During some chloridizing-roasting experiments in 1916, made in an assay muffle, the writer noted that large proportions of the silver, lead, and gold were volatilized from certain oxidized ores. The possibility of volatilizing the metals and collecting them in the form of a concentrated fume was then studied. But, as it was shown that satisfactory chloride-volatilization would be limited to a furnace feed with a high fusing temperature of the non-volatilizable constituents, and as the results obtained in a rotary kiln with the admixture of common salt with the ground ore were inferior to muffle tests, further volatilization experiments were discontinued until 1920. During this interval, an experimental sulfidizing and flotation plant was operated. After the cessation of attempts to float the oxidized minerals, chloride-volatilization experiments were resumed. The highly infusible flotation. tailing from the operation of the flotation mill was used for furnace feed. The first tests made on flotation tailing mixed with 10 per cent. common salt showed -nearly complete lead and gold volatilization but considerably less volatilization of silver than in muffle tests. In attempts to increase the silver extraction, the percentage salt in the furnace feed was varied, and it soon became apparent that the use of smaller percentages of salt raised the fusion temperature of the furnace charge and thus,

The problem of removing hydrogen sulphide from natural gas has become within the last few years one of major importance to the natural gas and petroleum industry. Several gas fields in the United States produce natural gas containing hydrogen sulphide, and a number of oil fields produce gas which contains hydrogen sulphide. 3 The percentage of hydrogen sulphide in natural gas produced in these fields varies from a fraction of 1 per cent t6 as high as 20.5 per cent by volume. 4 Hydrogen sulphide is probably the most toxic gas associated with natural gas,5 and from the standpoint of health and safety it is important that the hydrogen sulphide be removed if the gas is to be used for domestic purposes. Hydrogen sulphide, besides being toxic and therefore a hazard to animal life, is under certain conditions an active corrosive agent and very destructive to equipment. 6 The annual loss caused by the corrosive action of hydrogen sulphide on equipment amounts to hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of dollars. 7 The largest percentage of natural gas produced in the United States comes from wells which also produce oil. This associated gas invariably carries with it light fractions of petroleum, which when separated from the gas, condense to the liquid form at ordinary temperatures and pressure. Commercial application is made of this natural condition, and "wet gas" is processed to obtain so-called natural gasoline by employing the principles of absorption, adsorption, or compression and subsequent expansion accompanied by cooling. A series of investigations were made by the Mine Safety and Health Administration to evaluate the performance of various face ventilation systems as part of a program to reduce frictional ignitions of methane and to develop face ventilation systems that could be used with the line brattice more than 10 feet from the face. Tests were conducted in a full-scale laboratory model of a face area. Systems tested included unassisted blowing and exhaust line brattice, diffuser fan and spray fan systems. Systems were evaluated at air quantities ranging from 1.4 to 7.0 m3/s (3,000 to 15,000 cfm), and brattice-to-face distances from 1.5 to 9 meters (5 to 30 feet.). Tests were designed so that systems could be evaluated for the location of the high-point methane concentration in the face area, methane dilution capacity, and face ventilation index. The methane dilution capacity is the total amount of methane a system can dilute to 1.0 volume-percent. The face ventilation index is the efficiency at which the available face air volume is being used.

"In this investigation, a sponge gold sample (99.92% pure) has been leached with ammonium thiosulfate solution. The effects of CuSO4, (NH4)2S2O3, (NH4)2SO4, NH4OH and retention time on the gold leaching % (extraction %) and thiosulfate oxidation % (consumption %) have been studied. The copper ion acts as a catalyst in gold dissolution. On the other hand, it also accelerates oxidation of thiosulfate (consumption). It was found in this study that the best gold extraction condition was obtained at 43.2 ks with 0.8 - 1.0x103 mol/m3 (NH4)2S2O3, 30 mol/m3 CuSO4, 2.0 - 3.0x103 mol/m3 NH4OH, 0.4 - 0.5x103 mol/m3 (NH4)2SO4, pH 10±0.2 and 150 rpm. The thiosulfate oxidation was about 15% of the initial concentration.For gold recovery from the pregnant solution, the trioctylmethyl ammonium chloride (TOMAC) was used in this investigation as an extractant to extract gold from thiosulfate solution without pH and other adjustments. The effects of gold concentration, pH, ammonia, thiosulfate and cupric ionic concentrations, extractant and diluent concentrations and retention time on the gold recovery were investigated. It was found that 180 mol/m3 extractant diluted with n-octant at O/A ratio of 1:1 could extracted the 100% of gold in 0.6 ks from the thiosulfate solution at the optimal leaching conditions. The 100% gold stripping could be achieved with 10% thiourea solution."

In the first part of the article, the authors give a broad overview of the chemistry and some engineering aspects of bioleach processes, eventually leading to the important and critical issue of the stability of arsenic-containing residues, especially those derived from bioleaching of sulphidic gold ores. In the section ?Factors affecting arsenic stability? they give an excellent summary of the factors normally affecting the stability of such residues. This is followed by some valid comments on the suitability of a single leach test to evaluate the long-term stability of solid waste streams. However, they fail to mention that, up till now, no tests procedure has been accepted by either environmentalists or the mining/processing industry as a valid method to test the long-term stability of solid wastes. Their own method is no exception, although, like many others, it is useful to identify potential problems with solid wastes considered for disposal.

The author contends that geoscience is presently under-utilised in the rock fragmentation by blasting process. Before we can set standards in this area, the following is required: mine geologists need to gain a better understanding of the blasting process and the blasting team needs to obtain a better appreciation of geology. Both groups need to be informed of what can be done to improve blasting outcomes, why it is necessary and how it can be achieved. By working closely together, both the geoscience toolkits and blasting expertise can be applied and focused on priority blast sensitive issues, with potential to improve mine economics and safety. Finally, and ideally, mine geologists need to take a leadership role in raw rock mass data collection and data management, and invited to take an active role in rock mass related behaviour data collection, integration and presentation.This paper attempts to provide insight into all these prerequisites for setting a new standard for collaboration and mutual learning in this strategic opportunity area. The potential for blasting to leverage downstream processes is highlighted. Blasting objectives and blast design principles are introduced along with the required rock mass related inputs. Some hazardous geological materials and environmental conditions are described, along with how they can affect operational complexity.Four case examples are used to illustrate the need for closer liaison between geology and blasting professionals. The first related to grade control blasting, aims to demonstrate how a blasting geology approach can add significant value. Case example two demonstrates how geological models and bench face analysis can assist with fragment control. The third and fourth case examples involve an overview of two case studies where timely geological and geotechnical knowledge input and intervention into blasting activities may have reduced losses due to blast initiated open pit slope collapses.CITATION:Little, T N, 2017. Pb is an unwanted impurity in Al for which there is no established method of removal. As it interacts strongly with alkali metals, separation was achieved by adding Na or K to molten Al at 953-1 003 K. Direct Na addition led to considerable evaporative loss but in-situ addition by electrochemical titration from a eutectic NaCl-KCl or KCl-BaCl2 mixture was found far more effective, in some cases reducing Pb content below detection levels within 2 h of titration. K appeared more effective than Na at low Pb concentrations but the use of Na was preferred as it is less toxic and explosive. Na removal from Al-Na and Na-Pb alloys was also carried out electrochemically, the use of these two alloys rather than the eutectic salt as a source of Na avoiding liberation of Cl2 at the anode

Greater use should be made of lineations in investigations of the engineering properties of rock masses and in structural studies guiding prospecting programmes.A prominent alignment of elongate mineral grains and stretched pebbles usually marks the primary direction in which metamorphic rocks have been extended by flow. In local adjustment zones separating masses that have extended different amounts, this lineation has been a direction of slip. Kinks and crumples resulting from this slip lie in secondary lineation directions transverse to the primary mineral lineation.During deformation relatively mobile materials move into dilatant zones caused by irregularities in primary flow directions. This secondary movement transverse to lineated, primary-flow directions is the cause of crenulations and folds with axes parallel to flow lineations.INTRODUCTIONThe arrangement of inequidimensional particles in rocks is rarely statistically random. Platy minerals tend to be parallel to bedding and foliation planes. Elongate particles and linear structures lie most frequently in certain lineation directions. The types of elongate particles in lineated rocks include needle and blade shaped mineral grains, sheared out segregations, and stretched pebbles, amygdules, and aolites.Crenulations and kinks are the most common of the linear structures involved.Faint lineations are readily overlooked. Even strong lineations have been ignored. "Quebec Cartier Mining operates a pelletizing plant in Port-Cartier, QC. Grinding, agglomeration and pellets induration are the three main steps in the preparation of iron oxide pellets. In 1998, following different recommendations, the company increased the speed of one of its ball mill in order to increase the grinding efficiency of the machine. As expected, the increased speed lead to an increase of the power draught, which did not produce the expected increase of fineness of grind, neither its allows to increase the mill throughput. The change of behaviour of the mill could hardly be understood by comparison of discharge size distribution at initial and modified mill rotation speed. On the other hand, the use of the selection function from a population balance model provides an insight of the changes that occurred in the mill. This paper reviews the various steps required for the estimation of a grinding mill selection function. Results of the calibration to Quebec Cartier grinding mills show that the increase in the mill speed leads to higher rate of breakage of coarse particles, at the expenses of less efficient breakage of medium and fine size particles. In the case of the studied mill, breakage of coarse particles was probably not the critical step of the mill operation. INTRODUCTIONOre size reduction is the major energy consumption step in any mineral processing operations (Austin et al., 1984). Size reduction is required to either liberate valuable minerals from the gangue minerals in which they are imbedded, or to increase the specific surface of the ground material. Plant engineers continuously face the challenge to find grinding machines, operating conditions or grinding circuit flowsheet configurations that could improve the size reduction process at lower energy or m6dia consumption."
