Copper, zinc, lead, and silver in the discordant magmatic-hydrothermal orebody of the Conrad Mine, N.S.W., all have a relatively high mean abundance. Any single concordant sulphide orebody containing the same metals has a similar order of mean abundance of only one or two of these, particularly copper, copper and zinc, or zinc and lead.The relative abundances of the metals in the Conrad orebody vary more widely than in concordant orebodies, and the lead-zinc-silver and copper-zinc-lead relationships are significantly different.INTRODUCTIONIn previous investigations of metal abundances in sulphide ores, the basis of selection of the orebodies was their form, and to some extent their geological setting, rather than hypotheses concerning their origin. In all cases they were generally concordant with the bedding of the sedimentary or meta-sedimentary rocks enclosing them, and most occurred in volcanic-sedimentary sequences. Their mineralogies were simple, and they were copper, copper-zinc, zinc or lead-zinc rich in composition. Most were of the type ascribed by several authors to exhalative-sedimentary processes.In one of these investigations (Stanton, 1958), it was pointed out that since the metals in ores of this type showed similar abundance patterns and behaviour, it would clearly be of interest to examine, and to compare with them, orthomagmatic and vein types, unquestionably derived from their igneous rock associates.The present investigation is concerned with a single orebody, of clearly discordant type, and of indisputable hydrothermal origin. The abundance and behaviour of copper, zinc, lead, and silver have been determined and compared to similar data fOl!' the concordant type. Such a comparison tests the possibility that metal abundance patterns of base metal ores may be indicative of the mode of ore deposition.

Ensuring that diesel particulate matter (DPM) levels in underground metal and non-metal mines are maintained below statutory limits is an essential requirement of mine ventilation systems. However, despite the cost of providing ventilation, air ventilation rates are usually based upon models, assumptions, or measurements integrated over long durations rather than actual need. Real-time measurement of DPM, interpreted in terms of mine activity schedules, can offer better ventilation management to keep DPM within regulated levels while controlling costs. This work presents data from three demonstration sites with in-mine applications of an environmental particulate sensor that measured black carbon (BC) as a surrogate for DPM.Aethalometers are a class of environmental monitors that measure the light absorbance of aerosol particles at several optical wavelengths. A model AE33 Aethalometer was operated in three separate mines for periods of two weeks, three months, and seven-plus months, and the data was reported in real time as a concentration of BC. Concentration of aromatic organic compounds, which can indicate other forms of combustion, was also reported. The data was used to:- measure the relative efficiency of a new scale-model DPM air scrubber- determine if ventilation could be reduced in a shotcrete loading facility without compromising air quality- evaluate diurnal and weekly DPM levels in a large-entry stone mine. Instrument data were displayed locally and stored for later downloading in all cases. In one mine, the instrument was connected to a local controller, and in another it was connected to the mine’s underground network so that DPM data was presented in real time to a display in the mine ventilation engineering office on the surface.The results showed that the air scrubber removes from 82 per cent to 95 per cent of the DPM; that DPM produced during shotcrete loading is only a minor part of overall DPM levels; and that wide variations in DPM levels exist in the limestone operation. The DPM monitor operated continuously for extended periods in these underground environments. The only maintenance required was the routine replacement of filter tape, typically on a two-week schedule. A sample diluter, which is currently being tested, could extend the intervals between filter changes. Experimental investigations were made into the decoppering of lead, tin, and bismuth using a technique which approximates on the small scale to industrial practice.Decoppering lead with sulphur alone in the absence of tin and silver did not proceed to low copper values. With a minimum of 0·02 per cent Ag or 0·10 per cent Sn, lead was decoppered to less than 0·01 per cent Cuby stirring with 0·2 per cent S over 10 min. Decoppering of tin or bismuth proceeded rapidly to very low levels in the absence of any "catalytic" impurities, at any rate in excess of those concentrations normally encountered in commercially pure tin or bismuth.

A large magnesite-talc body is locared in Delora Township, 11 km sourh-southeasr of Timmins, Onrario. The deposit occurs in part of an Archean greensrone belt dominated by volcanic and sedimenrary rocks and large bodies of ultramafic intrusions. The magnesite-talc zane is abour 1800 m long, has a maximum width of 300 m and has been drilled ro 120 m below surface. Chemical analyses of rhe main carbonate zane average 20 ro 28% soluble MgO (magnesia), 5 ro 6% rota/ iron oxide and less rhan 0.1 % CaO (lime). Mineralogically, the zane consists of approximately 54% magnesite, 28% rate, /5% quartz and 3% hematire. Perrographic srudies suggest that rhe various assemblages of magnesite, rate, quartz and serpentine were derived from a parenr serpenrinire (after dunire). An early carbonitization stage, which produced a high-magnesite, low-talc assemblage, preceded a farer decarbonitizarion stage, which formed rhe main magnesite-talc assemblage. Despite a favourably low calcium oxide content of rhe magnesite-talc rock, considerable iron in the magnesire /at rice has limited the quality of the beneficiared product: rhe besr flotation concentrate to dare yields 92 to 94% dead-burned MgO. Lieut. Louis J. Brunel, now in France, was commissioned on July 27, 1917, as Second Lieutenant in the Engineers Reserve Corps, assigned to the 7th U. S. Engineers, Dec. 10, 1917, and has been with the American E. F. since Mar. 26, 1918. He was assigned to the staff of the General commanding the 5th Field Artillery Brigade, as Engineer Officer, on Aug. 6, 1918. E. Ross Housholder writes that "the record for pontoon bridge building was broken Sept. 25, 1918, by Section A, Co. 4, 5th Engineer Officers' Training School, at Camp Humphreys, Va., of which I am a member. The time was 15 min. 11 3/5 seconds. We then proceeded to break the record for dismantling in 9 min. 57 1/5 seconds. The length of the bridge section was 200 ft. The post band was sent out to meet us, and we feel proud of this record. I have met quite a few A. I. M. E.

High Pressure Water Jet Assisted Tunneling The high pressure water jet assisted tunneling project was conducted in a granite quarry near Skykomish, Washington, approximately 90 miles east of Seattle. A 7-ft diam tunnel boring machine was modified and equipped with high pressure water jets. The concept that tunneling rates can be improved by using high pressure water jets was validated, with an average increased advance rate of 50% to 60%. For some tests, the advance rate was more than doubled. A comprehensive economic analysis has shown that very significant savings are possible. At a 50% increase in advance rate, cost savings of 14% and 24% were projected for 10-ft and 20-ft diam tunnels respectively. These benefits were seen to be relatively insensitive to water jet equipment costs.

The separation of precious metals from base metals containing in gold-antimony alloys by selective chlorination leaching under controlling potential was studied in this work. The effects of the consumption of hydrogen peroxide, the concentration of hydrochloric acid, the concentration of sulfuric acid, leaching temperature, leaching time and the liquid-solid ratio in hydrochloric acid system on the leaching efficiencies of the base metals have been investigated. The optimal leaching conditions of the gold-antimony alloys are as follows: hydrochloric acid concentration 4.0mol?L-1, sulfuric acid concentration 1.2mol?L-1, liquid-solid ratio L:S=7.5:1, the leaching temperature 80 0C, leaching time 2h, and the oxidation potential of the leaching system 400±20mV( vs SCE).The leaching efficiencies of copper, nickel and antimony are more than 99% and the gold leaching efficiency is about 0.042% under the above leaching conditions. The base metals containing in the gold-antimony alloy are separated from the precious metals thoroughly.

In 1990 the Noranda Technology Centre commenced a project to develop an interactive three-dimensional blast design system using a commercial computer-aided drafting and design package (CADD). The objective was to alleviate the blast engineer from the tedious and time consuming blast layout and design functions normally done by hand. This would allow more time for optimizing blast designs through assessing multiple options. Since several blast design software "tools" already existed at Noranda, the need arose to integrate all the applications into one overall system that shared one common database. The result is BLASTCAD.

On one project the settlements were not provided for in the design of the structure. Soils are sands, silts, and varved clays to shale. A rift in a central area is 600 feet deep. Combining action features of explosive shock with those of natural lignocellulosic biomass structure, we have successfully developed a new explosive shock dilatation and separation technique for pretreatment of natural lignocellulosic materials in the laboratory. Based on a brief introduction to the technical background and experimental procedure of this new method, some preliminary experimental results are given and discussed: the scanning electron microscope (SEM) qualitative observation results show that for treated natural lignocellulosic sample such as corn cob etc., their length of fibre bundle shortens, fibre bundle arrange disorders, biomass appearance and structure of samples largely change to be dilatation and loose state. The dilute acid hydrolysis quantitative measure results show that for treated samples, the overall yield of the reducing sugar largely increases, hydrolysis rate of corn cob sample is over 80%, rate and speed of hydrolysis are increased by times.

"Various theoretical and experimental techniques used to search and develop new metal hydride systems suitable for hydrogen storage are described. The main theoretical technique under study makes the use of electronic structure of the candidate materials. Microstructural characterization techniques like transmission electron microscopy are being used to study the hydride formation. Novel processing techniques for material preparation such as those needed to produce thin films or amorphous phases are also being utilized. The techniques are illustrated with results from Pd, FeTi and Mg2Ni systems.IntroductionOf the four methods of hydrogen storage, compressed gas, cryogenic liquid, metal hydrides, and gas-solid adsorption, the metal hydride storage method is more attractive from the point of view of high volumetric density and safety. Compressed gas storage has disadvantages of extreme pressure, weight, and volume requirements, whereas storage of hydrogen as cryogenic liquid is unattractive due to the requirements of extremely low temperatures and high consumption of primary energy. Moreover, the number hydrogen atoms present in a volume of 10- 22 Cm3 (nH) in liquid hydrogen state (- 20K) is 4.2 whereas number of hydrogen atoms that can be accommodated in a free volume of 10-22 cm3 of various hydrides are as follows: LiH--5.9, TiH2--9.2, ZrH2--9.2, VH2--l0.2. High hydrogen concentration is usually associated with a large H/Metal atomic ratio but is also a function of structure."

The present Paper extends the previous work on cold reduced, low carbon steels to preferred orientations developed after various heat treatments. In recrystal-lized rimmed steel, cube-on-comer orientations increased with cold reductions up to 80 pct. Above that {111}<112> and a partial fiber texture with (1,6,11) in the rolling direction dominated. During grain growth, cube-on-corner orientations have been observed to grow at the expense of {210}<00l>. In re-crystallized Si-Fe (111) (112) and cube-on-edge type orientations are dominant near the surface and the (1,6,11) texture near the midplane for reductions up to 60 pct. With larger reductions {111)}<112> and the (1,6,11) texture are dominant. In cross rolled capped steel a relationship of 30 deg rotation was observed between the (100)[011] of the rolling texture and the main orientations after re crystallization. Most orientations present in recrystallized specimens can be related to components of the rolling texture by one of the following rotations: a) 25 to 35 deg about a (110) b) 55 deg about a (110) C) 30 deg about a (Ill) THE orientation texture of recrystallized steel is of interest where the product is to be deep drawn, because preferred orientation is related to anisotropy of mechanical properties such as the plastic strain ratio (r value);1,2 and in electrical steel applications where a high concentration of [loo] directions in the plane of the sheet improves the magnetic properties of the material. It is interesting to note that both these aims are to a large extent achieved commercially, even though the orientation texture of cold rolled steel does not show large variation3 and the recrystallized orientations are generally given as being related to the as rolled orientations mostly by 25 to 35 deg rotations about common (110) directions.4-6 There is, as yet, no single completely accepted theory on recrystallization. The three mechanisms that have been investigated and discussed are: a) Oriented growth b) Oriented nucleation c) Oriented nucleation, selective growth Largely from the observations of the recrystalliza-tion process by means of the electron microscope,7-11 there is now considerable evidence that the "nucleus" of the recrystallized grain is produced by the coalescence of a few subgrains to form a larger composite subgrain, which finally grows by high angle boundary migration into the deformed matrix. From the intensive work on the recrystallization of rolled single crystals of iron, Fe-A1 and Fe-Si al-loys4-" he following observations have been made: 1) The change in orientation during primary recrys-tallization can usually be described as a rotation of 25 to 36 deg about one of the (110) directions. 2) The (110) axes of rotation often coincide with poles of active (110) slip planes. 3) If several orientations are present in the cold rolled structure, the (110) axis of rotation will preferably be a (110) direction that is common to two or more of the orientations. 4) With larger amounts of cold reduction (70 pct or more) departure from these observations became more frequent. 5) After larger cold reductions, rotations on re-crystallization about (111) and (100) directions have been observed. K. Detert12 infers that a rotation relationship of 55 deg about (110) directions is also possible, by stating that the recrystallized orientation {111}<112> can form from the orientation {100}<011> of cold reduced partial fiber texture A.3 The observation by Michalak and schoone13 that (lll)[l10] formed during recrys-tallization in fully killed steel containing (111)[112],— as well as (001)[ 110] which is related to the {111}<011> by a 55 deg rotation about <110>-implies a possible 30 deg rotation relationship about the common [Ill]. Heyer, McCabe, and Elias14 have recrystallized rimmed steel after various amounts of cold reduction, by a rapid and by a slow heating cycle and found that the preferred orientations strengthened with increased cold reduction. The most pronounced orientation up to about 70 pct cold reduction was found to be {1 11}< 110>, after 80 pct cold reduction both {111}<110> and {111}<112>, after 85 and 90 pct cold reduction, {111}<112>, and after 97.5 pct cold reduction it was {111}<112> and (100)(012). In the present work, the orientation textures of the recrystallized specimens are examined under various conditions of steel composition, amount and method of cold reduction, and method of recrystallization. The relationships between the preferred orientations of the as rolled and recrystallized specimens, and the conditions for the formation of the various orientations during recrystallization are investigated.

Triboelectric Charge and Separation Characteristics of Industrial Minerals The basic principles of triboelectric charge and separation of minerals and the factors affecting the entity of the charges developed on mineral surfaces are discussed and the surface pretreatment methods by which the electrophysical properties and thereby triboelectric charging and separation of minerals can be artificially altered/modified are reviewed. Furthermore, the triboelectricfication theory of materials is envisaged from the chemical concept of acid-base donor-acceptor and an attempt is made to correlate the physical concept of triboelectrification with the donor-acceptor properties. The triboelectric charge characteristics of the quartz, calcite and wollastonite mineral samples for different size classes were defined using different tribocharging medium. Based on the triboelectric charges acquired by mineral samples their energetic work function values are estimated. In addition, the main electrophysical properties, ie dielectric constant and electrical conductivity, of different size fractions of the mineral samples are measured and their donor-acceptor chemical properties were defined. A series of triboelectric separation tests were conducted to explore the possibilities for separation these mineral from each others. The results from the triboelectric charge and separation of the single mineral systems showed promising prospect in separating quartz, calcite, and wollastonite from each others. Finally, attempts were made to explore the possibilities to implement triboelectric charge and separation process to real ores. Promising results achieved when separation of calcite from silicate impurity was sought from a carbonate ore. A very high purity (99 per cent) calcite product was obtained at a recovery of 80 per cent. Interesting results were also achieved to concentrate wollastonite from a complex silicate ore containing quartz, different feldspars, wollastonite and other Mg-Fe silicates. In this case conditioning of the ore with salicylic acid at defined temperature and relative humidity was found to be essential to concentrate wollastonite. The outcomes indicate despite the fact that triboelectric charge and separation process has not been completely perceived, it pronounced to be an environmentally friendly and economically viable technique for minerals and wastes beneficiation. Being a dry beneficiation technique the process has special appeal, which must be explored further in particular for treating industrial minerals.

"Mining companies strive to increase and maintain production, while simultaneously remaining competitive in the global economy. Furthermore, they must ensure workers’ safety and maintain good safety records. The use of virtual reality (VR) facilitates the development of tools and systems for various purposes that can improve knowledge and understanding of the work environment. VR is a rapidly growing technology that uses the ever-increasing power of computing to simulate real-world and imaginary environments and situations with a high degree of realism and interaction. The availability of 3D modelling tools and simulation programming engines that work effectively with a mid-range desktop PC and standard 3D graphics card, make VR technology viable and attractive for mainstream training applications. The design, development, and implementation of interactive VR training systems is proposed as an innovative approach to augment safety training. However, in order to assess the impact of such VR training systems it is of particular importance to determine the effectiveness of the design of such systems. This article proposes an evaluation framework for this vital purpose. This framework comprises criteria to assess VR training systems, specifically relating to usability, instructional design, VR systems design, and mining industry context-specific aspects. Although the framework was developed as an evaluation tool to assess effectiveness of the design of such systems, it can equally well be used as a set of design principles to inform the design of VR training systems for mining. IntroductionMining in South Africa has been the main driving force behind the history and development of Africa’s richest and most advanced economy (Coka, 2012). The South African mining industry is frequently criticised for its poor safety record and high fatality rate (Stoddard and Skweyiya, 2016). Inadequate or insufficient training is often cited as a root cause of accidents (Van Wyk and De Villiers, 2009; Tichon and Burgess-Limerick, 2011). Virtual reality (VR) is a rapidly growing technology that utilizes the ever-increasing power of computing to simulate real-world and imaginary environments and situations with a high degree of realism and interaction (Webber-Youngman and Van Wyk, 2013). VR is currently being used or investigated as a training solution in a variety of industries. VR technology has developed rapidly and costs have fallen to levels where it can now be considered for mainstream training applications. The availability of 3D modelling tools and simulation programming engines that work effectively with a mid-range desktop PC and a standard 3D graphics card, make VR even more attractive to mine training centres (Van Wyk and De Villiers, 2009)."

A large number of brittleness concepts have been used in very different studies in the literature. One of them is the B1brittleness concept. In this study, the objective is to criticize the B1 brittleness concept on rotary blast hole drills. The B1 brittleness concept, the ratio of uniaxial compressive strength (sc) to tensile strength (sT), are widely used as a rock brittleness concept in the literature (Inyangand Pitt, 1990; Verhoef, P.N.W. 1993; Neil, D.M. et al.1994;Becker, et al.1984; Evans and Pomeroy, 1966; Göktan, R.M.1992; Kahraman, S. 2001; Yamaguchi, U. 1970; Verhoef, P.N.W. et al.1996; Bilgin, 1982; Howarth and Rowlands,1987; Howarth, D.F. et al. 1986). So, it was used as a rock brittleness concept in this article. The value of the B1brittleness concept is equal to the tangent of ß angle in the following graph. It was seen that more meaningful relationships could be obtained with the B2 brittleness, the under ?Area?(= 1/2(scxsT) = B2) under the curve, instead of tangent ß, (=B1), of the curve.

"The effect of interburden on overlying strata movement during the mining of a lower group coal seam is still a challenge in China. Based on the multiple coal seams in western China, numerical simulation and field tests are applied to study the interburden and overburden movement during the undermining process. This study focuses on the impact of the thickness and structure of the interburden, the proportion of hard rock, and the ratio of the overburden thickness to interburden thickness (OB/IB). In this paper, four typical underground coal mines are simulated for lower seam longwall mining with different interburden parameters. The results indicate that the ratio of the overburden thickness to the interburden thickness is not the dominant actor for multiple seam longwall mining, especially in the mines in western China,which feature shallow depth. The thick and hard interburden could strongly affect the lower coal seam mining process. INTRODUCTION The project background is based on four typical underground coal mines in western China.The information on the overburden and interburden is shown in Table 1. Different overburden to interburden thickness (OB/IB) (Ellenberger, 2009) values of the four coal mines are also studied: 6.2 in Bulianta coal mine, 7.2 in Kaida coal mine, 8.2 in Shigetai coal mine, and 9.4 in Halagou coal mine. The proportions of hard rock in the interburden of the four coal mines are also different: 0% in Kaida coal mine, 70% in Shigetai coal mine, 80% in Bulianta coal mine, and 100% in Halagou coal mine. To be specific: the thickness of interburden are listed as follows: 7m in Halagou coal mine, 6m in Kaida coal mine, 10m in Shigetai coal mine, 28m in Bulianta coal mine. The depth of the upper coal seam are: 66m in Halagou coal mine, 54m in Kaida coal mine, 79m in Shigetai coal mine, 182m in Bulianta coal mine. NUMERICAL SIMULATION UDEC 4.0 is applied in this paper to analyse the overlying strata movement and the interburden failure.(Liu, 2007) This is based on mining in the lower coal seam under the mined-out upper coal seam (Majdi, 2012, Morsy, 2006)."

By the experiment results, the fibrillar precursor is a complicated nickel salt. The precursor prepared in the of 60~70°C,0.6~0.8 mol/L nickel ion, pH=8.4~8.6 and with addition of PVP surfactant is well dispersive and in fiber form. The powder dried by azeotropic distillation is dispersive.

After the explosion at Middelbult Colliery, South Africa in May1993, which claimed 53 lives, the South African Coal Mining Industry and the Safety In Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC) united forces to establish a surface facility to develop and test on-board flame suppression systems for continuous miners and roadheaders. The first test that was conducted in this newly constructed test tunnel at the Kloppersbos Research Facility, CSIR was in July 1995.Since then 70 tests have been conducted using the facility and have focused on on-board active ignition suppression systems for continuous miners (CM) and road heading (RH) machines to enhance the safety of South African mine workers in collieries. These suppression systems are mounted on the CM or RH machine and detect the occurrence of an ignition by means of light-sensitive sensors. The electronic signal from the sensor triggers the suppression system, creating a flame-suppression curtain, containing and extinguishing the flame in the immediate vicinity of the ignition. Forty-three tests have been conducted with an active on-board suppression system present inside the test tunnel. Since flame propagation speed is an extremely important parameter, the CSIR-Miningtek made the results of the test programme available for re-analysis. Flame speed depended on whether a machine was present in the heading or not, the geometry of the heading and the volume and composition of the explosive mixture of gas. Flame speeds of up to 190 m/s were recorded. However, the active suppression systems were almost always successful in containing flame propagation.

"The thermal decomposition and regeneration behaviors of wüstite were investigated by in situ high temperature X-ray diffraction (HT-XRD) under non-isothermal condition at heating rate of 4 K min-1 in vacuum ranging from 294 K to 973 K. Wüstite on heating decomposes to magnetite and iron up to 823 K, above which it exhibits marked tendency to regenerate. Investigation of thermal stability of the reaction system shows that the decomposition proceeds under kinetic reaction control while the regeneration is under thermodynamic control. Kinetics study based on the Coats-Redfern integral approximation method indicates that the decomposition reaction follows a Komatsu-Uemura model-based diffusion-controlled kinetics with activation energy of 32.860 kJ mol-1. The thermodynamics analysis of regeneration reaction demonstrates that wüstite regenerates at lower temperature than stoichiometric ferrous oxide.IntroductionOwing to its importance in preparing various magnetic ceramic/metal nanocompostites or nanocrystals with high values of coercivity for the application as recording media, wüstite (non-stoichiometric ferrous oxide) has been attracting the attention of scientists over a long period [1-6]. The thermal behavior of wüstite was investigated by several researchers and phase transformations due to thermal decomposition and regeneration of wüstite during the heating in a specific temperature range was observed [7-9]. In spite of wüstite being found to dissociate to magnetite and iron at temperatures lower than 848 K and then regenerates at higher temperature, a clear understanding of the reaction mechanisms is clearly lacking [9]."
