My selection of the Australian coal industry as the theme of this Presidential Address arose from the fact that it is one of our most important mineral industries. The industry is presently prospering.M.ore coal, mostly of better quality (except for certarn power-house types), is being produced more cheaply in terms of real money than at any time in the past, and exports overseas are currently at a highlevel.In. spite of this, concern has been expressed in certam quarters about the future of some phases of the industry; for example, there has been some public comment on the selling price of our coking coal to Japan, the possible over-export of our coking coals from New South Wales, the introduction of foreign capital to develop large-scale mining ventures in Queensland, and the proposed export of substantial quantities of coking coal from the same State.Furthermore, proposals for the introduction of atomic power plants into several States well endowed with reserves of coal have given rise to comment, and recently the Department of National Development(1968) warned that insufficient attention is being paid to "orderly development and careful husbanding of the nation's coal.To reach a balanced judgment on whether these views are well founded it is essential to make a broad survey of the present position of the coal industry in the Australian economy. I therefore propose to deal briefly with several aspects, and to comment, in particular, on the important subjects of exploration and research in progress at present on Australian coals.Detailed descriptions of the Australian coalfields are to be found in existing technical publications (e.g.. Andrew, 1965; McLeod, 1965) and the data on coal reserves have been progressively revised as more accurate information has become available. Flotation separation and recovery of value minerals from ores containing fibrous silicate minerals are known to be quite challenging. Earlier studies have established that the metallurgical challenges (poor selectivity and recovery, high energy consumption, etc.) arise from the impact of the fibrous minerals (with high aspect ratio) on pulp rheology, which was found be rather complex. The complex rheological behavior of ore suspensions containing particles with high aspect ratio and its influence on flotation outcome are investigated in this study. Flotation tests and rheological measurements were carried out with both ores (containing fibrous minerals) and a model system comprising nylon fibers (chemically inert) added to a copper ore that had no fibrous mineral. These studies allowed the determination of contributions of physical properties of the fiber to pulp rheological behavior. Optical microscopy images of the fiber pulp indicated that the fibers entangled to form two levels of microstructures: two-dimensional (2D) aggregates under semi-dilute (< 20% solids) conditions and three-dimensional (3D) microstructures at concentrations > 30% solids. The yield stress (σ) values determined for the fiber pulp were logarithmically related to the volume fraction of the 2D/3D structures. The relationships developed here for different ARs showed that the yield stress of a flotation pulp changes with respect to shape, size, and the concentrations of the microstructures. Implications to the effects of such entangle networks on selectivity of flotation separation are discussed.

To the industrial geologist, as wen as to the general or historic geologist, the possession of a reliable key to the true order or sequence of the stratigraphy or position of the various upper rocky envelopes of the earth&apos;s crust, is, equally, a desideratum of the utmost importance. Of similar value to the two groups of students is the possession of facts which throw light upon the relationships which subsist between the puccessive rock formation of different countries, especially between countries lying close to each other, or within the same great geographical division.But there is necessarily a fundamental distinction which marks the respective limits of the field of observations of the industrial geologist, and the purely historic interest of the general geologist. The former has a more definite though less extensive scope. The scope of the latter is wide and indeterminate. In short, the observations of the industrial geologist are, &apos;from a commercial or economic point of view, of a more practical character, and are, therefore, intentionally restricted to the study of all geological questions which throw light upon the rocks which yield products of economic value and only include the study of the character and history of other rocks, in so far, as they afford aid to the more perfect comprehension of the best manner in which materials of economic value are likely to be sought, and the best means whereby these products may be secured for the material advantage of the community. The motive of the general geologist-in most cases-is a love of the study of some particular branch or province of the geological field, and the fascination of opening a new volume in nature&apos;s library, and the hope of extending the realm of knowledge, however slight, are often sufficient, as a motive, to enlist the energy and life&apos;s devotion of the true brethren of the hammer, irrespective of considerations regarding the commercial utility of the pursuit.

For the purpose of determining confidence limits for ore grade estimates, an extensive simulated data base was used, which included 1728 ore blocks with ‘actual’ grades and the corresponding estimates based on ordinary and simple kriging. The practical results show that conditional unbiasedness is essential and that acceptable confidence limits can then be set using Normal theory for the simulated error distribution based on the logarithms of the ratios of ‘actuals’/estimates with a variance related to the kriging variance. The mean of the data used to prepare the variogram and the estimated block grade are to be used properly in this approach. A practical analysis was also done of the actual point and block data from a very large mined out Carbon Leader area. The distributions of the actual grades for two levels of block sizes with different levels of variability were fitted using three models, ie. 2-. 3- and compound-lognormal. The trends of tonnages, grades and relative profits for a range of pay limits, as well as the usual tonnage-grade curves, show a practical insensitivity for the choice between the three lognormal models considered.

The use of computing machines to solve physical problems has made it imperative to represent physical data in a form computing machines can use. Although curve-fitting is an old and well-practiced art, there still seems to be some interest in questions regarding what methods can be used and why. Even though there are many good references on this subject, it may be of some value to discuss a particular method which has been found to be useful, and to make available the associated tables for its use in the hope that there can be saved a few of the tedious hours necessary to reduce many of the suggested methods to practice. Although a very brief discussion of the mathematical background of the tables is included immediately below, those interested only in their use can skip directly to the section on Use of the Tables. Direct Fit of a Set of Points A frequently encountered problem is: Given data which can be represented by a smooth curve +(x), to find an easy-to-evaluate function F(x), with only a few coefficients, which is a good approximation of +(x) on the interval 0 5 x 5 x,,. As opposed to fine dry sizing, where the length of the screening machine is critical for high separation efficiency, introducing slurry feed to screens in a thin and even layer at minimal velocities across wider screen surfaces allows for high capacities and efficiencies, with maximum screen cloth life. This is due primarily to the combination of free liquid and high frequency vibration of the Derrick motors, which allow fine undersize material to pass through the screen apertures. Lacking either of these factors would be extremely detrimental to the screening process. Without the high frequency vibration of the motor, the screen is essentially a low efficiency sieve bend. Without the free liquid to carry fines through the screen openings, the screen is for all intents and purposes a glorified conveyor or dewatering unit, as little or no sizing takes place once the screen is devoid of free liquid. For optimal screening results, Derrick recommends feeding slurry to a screen at approximately 20% solids by volume. Figure 1 shows the Stack Sizer design concept. The Epping to Chatswood Rail Line project is the largest publicly funded infrastructure project in New South Wales. Construction commenced in November2002 with opening scheduled for 2008. The work includes 13 route km of twin TBM driven 7.2 m diameter lined running tunnel, three cross-overs and three new underground stations. The new stations have platform caverns of 20m span with similarly proportioned concourse caverns alongside. The ground is bedded sand stone and shale with high horizontal stresses. Predicted stress-relief induced ground movements during staged excavation led to innovative use of rock anchors for permanent support.

R. T. Hukki (Finland Institute of Technology, Helsinki, Finland)—Two schools of thought are developing concerning the order of the rate of flotation. The paper by Morris is intended to show experimental evidence in favor of the first order rate. Arbiter, on the other hand, has presented an earlier paper" to demonstrate the validity of the second order rate equation. Unfortunately his method of plotting is open to criticism, as pointed out by Morris." A more sensitive method of plotting has been described by the writer,= whereby the data presented by Arbiter demonstrate the superiority of the second order plot. The general rate equation may be written in the following forms for the integrated first and second order equations: (A) t = -1/k In Co-R/Co (first order) [4] 1 (B) 1/t = - kCo + kCo2 1/R (second order) As a first approximation the value of Co may be taken as a unity, 100 pct or 1. Whether or not this is the case in all tests performed by Morris is impossible to judge, owing to the fact that the flotation times are extremely short, e.g. 150 sec in tests A. It would, indeed, be very interesting to know what the total recovery R would be after 1 hr of flotation, for example, instead of after 150 sec. The year 2010 will mark the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the research efforts by the U.S. government to improve the health and safety of miners working in the United States. This research began in 1910 with the establishment of the U.S. Bureau of Mines (the Bureau) and it has continued during the past 10 decades, even after the closure of the Bureau in 1996. The research on safer mining technology, formerly done by the Bureau, has now been combined with National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) studies of miners? health to form a unified federal research program to improve the health and safety of miners. This article describes this research and places some of the accomplishments into perspective with other activities in the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Time Line (insert).

The reduction of Mn3O4 to MnO has been investigated in a thermobalance apparatus. The charge was composed of manganese ore (decomposed by heating/calcination or pre-reduction to mainly Mn304) and coke. The material was charged to a crucible, which was suspended in the balance. CO-gas was distributed through a grid in the bottom of the crucible. Two sizes of ores were used; 2.4-4.8 mm and 6.7-9.5 mm. Coke particles were in the size range 4.8-6.7 mm. Experiments were conducted in the 900-1100°C temperature range. The composition of the product gas was monitored continuously. External mass transport between bulk gas and particle surface does not seem to limit the rate of reduction. Assuming that both diffusion through product layer and chemical reaction at the interface between MnO and Mn304 are rate controlling, the data was tried both in a shrinking core model and in a grain model using regression. The grain model gives the best physical description of the process, because the reactant is in fact a porous medium. With this model the effective diffusivity was calculated to be in the 1.5-6.10-5 m2/s range. The pore size was mainly between 0.1 and 10 um.

The presence of an extensive soft siltstone layer in the middle of the inter-burden sequence of rocks at Syferfontein Colliery in the Republic of South Africa prompted tests to determine the effect of different mid-column decks of inert material in the siltstone layer. The objective was to achieve significant cost savings in explosives use whilst not degrading dragline productivity. An important factor that had to be considered was that the initiation systems available in South Africa are not accurate enough to ensure simultaneous initiation of explosives decks in a blasthole. A number of inert materials were tested including ash, drill cuttings, river sand and crushed stone. It was found that the ash, drill cuttings and river sand did not effectively attenuate the shock wave and that the risks of sympathetic detonation or partial disruption of one or the other explosives deck in a blasthole was high. This became much worse when the inert material was saturated with water. Crushed rock was the most effective in attenuating the shock wave, but this material was very expensive to use because it had to be imported onto the mine.

?We are certain there is need for research in every phase of mining." This statement by R. M. Crump of the Jones and Laughlin Steel Company (047) paraphrases opinion widespread among mining people. It is undoubtedly true. In preparation for this presentation, 193 organizations were asked to describe their mining research efforts. 60% responded, The meaning of "research" was taken in several different ways. The continual efforts of progressive companies to improve themselves were reported as research. We will call this and any effort to solve specific and immediate problems "practical research". The continuing investigation of subjects of long range interest will be called "basic research".

This report describes laboratory studies by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to determine the suitability of a static oxygen (OJ adsorption test for evaluating the self-heating tendencies of coals. Reliable minimum self-heating temperature (SHT) values from adiabatic oven tests were used as standards for comparison and evaluation. A suite of six coals was tested in the adiabatic oven and in sealed flasks. In the latter tests, both undried and dried samples, in a range of four particle sizes, were examined. Miniature pressure trans-ducers monitored pressures in the flasks, and gas samples taken at the end of the tests quantified all the gases present. An excellent correlation was found between the minimum SHT&apos;s and amounts of O2 adsorbed over a 7-day period for dried coals, independent of particle size. In addition, a good correlation was obtained between the minimum SHT&apos;s and pressure changes in the flasks at the end of the test for the same coals, also independent of particle size. Based on these results, the sealed flask test can be reliably used to determine the self-heating tendency of a bituminous coal sample.

Native asphalt was produced by five companies in two States, Texas and Utah. Bituminous limestone, used primarily as a paving material for street and road repair, was produced by White Uvalde Mines and by Azrock Industries Inc., Uvalde County, TX. In June, Azrock Industries was purchased by the R L. White Co. Gilsonite, a solidified hydrocarbon found only in Utah and Colorado, was mined by American Gilsonite Co., a division of Chevron Resources Co. (a subsidiary of Standard Oil Co. of California); by Ziegler Chemical and Mineral Corp.; and by Hydrocarbon Mining Co. (a subsidiary of Oberon Oil Inc., a Utah corporation) from properties in Uintah County, UT. Gilsonite is used for a variety of purposes including automobile bodysealer, light-weight aggregate for cement used in oil well drilling, asphaltic building board, protective coverings, anticorrosive paints, and roofing compounds.

Kinetic study of hydrochloric acid leaching of Panzhihua ilmenite from China is presented. Both temperature and concentration of hydrochloric acid have significant effects on the rate process of Fe dissolution from ilmenite ore, while the ratio of liquid to solid has little effect on the Fe dissolution. The Fe dissolution is found to follow the spherical model f (??) =1-(1- ??)1/3 and the apparent activation energy is calculated as 47.21 KJ/mol, suggesting a chemical reaction controlled mechanism. The dissolving behaviors vary at different kinetic stages. At the beginning the amount of the dissolved Fe and Ti increased monotonically with leaching time, while about 15 minutes later the dissolved Ti in the form of TiOCl2 began hydrolyzed into TiO2 fines reunited on the ilmenite ore surface, as observed by SEM and EDS technique. For the unreacted ilmenite particles covered by a layer of hydrolyzed TiO2, the leaching seemed to be as a selective leaching of iron and because Ti dissolved from and hydrolyzed rapidly again into the unreacted ilmenite particles. The leaching process can be ended 4 hour later when almost of Fe has dissolved into the solution and TiO2 remains as solid residues. The effects of acid concentration and leaching temperature were also investigated.

This paper presents a virtual prototype for the stress analysis of cable shovel components based on combination of flexible and rigid body approach. The general mechanical system of the cable shovel is modeled as a multi-body system with rigid and flexible bodies. The relevant theories applied for the dynamic model are described in terms of Lagrangian multi-body dynamics and finite element method. A virtual prototype of the cable shovel is built in the Automatic Dynamic Analysis Mechanical System (ADAMS) environment, which allows visualizing the motion of general mechanical system and analyzing the dynamic stress of structural components of the cable shovel. An example is given to perform dynamic stress of durability analysis for the boom and handle. Attention of this study is devoted to the mechanisms of damage of the cable shovel and also the critical high stress areas. "More Skill is needed to avoid rather than to handle heavy ground loads." This finding, from a tunneling engineer of the nineteenth century, is still relevant today with all advanced sequential excavation and support methods available whether they are applied in the vertical or horizontal direction. Balanced contractual agreements and documents are important since they provide the spirit and climate at the site. This article aims to describe the means and measures for &apos;hand mined&apos; shaft and tunnel support as they are available today. Some special construction elements and methods with a perspective in recent developments in order to avoid getting stuck in conservatism are presented as well. If we don&apos;t allow new methods, means and measures we may end up with the famous quote "Only women who have already proven they are able to give birth to a healthy baby are allowed to become pregnant!"

The kinetics on the growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was studied by use of series piezoelectric quartz crystal ( SPQC ). Arsenic ioninhibits the growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, which is consistent with the previous results by other measuring method. This further demonstrates that the SPQC can monitor the chemical activity of the growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. Cupric ion accelerates the growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The mechanism was discussed, it was considered that copper promotes the protein enzyme of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, rustic yanin, to form over the range of cupric ion concentration studied. There action order of cupric ion in accelerating the bacterial growth is 0.067. The growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans is dependent on temperature, the apparent reaction activation energy decreases from25.56 kJ / mol to 18.32 kJ / mol because of the addition of 10 mg / L Cu(II) to the bacterial growth solution of pH 2.0 at initial inoculum of 10%.

"This presentation will cover some crushing and grinding considerations in plant design and operation. There is nothing basically new in the subject matter presented here; however, the viewpoint and interpretation may be novel and some of it controversial.The presentation is based on experience gained in the metallurgical design of plants for Placer Development Limited from 1960 to the present. The plants are listed on SLIDE No. 1.These plants have conventional crushing, followed by rod mill and ball mill grinding. I would like to think that autogenous grinding plants are the answer for eliminating secondary crushing plants and reducing the capital and operating costs; however, the autogenous plants seem to have some problems of their own and I have had no experience with them.Fineness of Grinding RequiredFirst let us consider the fineness of grinding required.The fineness of grind will affect the recovery obtained, and the relationship must be determined. If the grinding is too coarse, some of the valuable mineral, either free or locked in middling grains, will not be floated. However, as grinding is probably the greatest single operating cost, we do not want to grind any finer than is justified economically.Finer grinding should not be carried beyond the point where the net smelter return for the increment saved becomes less than the added operating cost. Even this fineness will be beyond the economic limit because of the additional capital cost for the equipment needed to achieve it. These factors will be discussed in more detail later.The Bond work index is the commonest method of expressing a measure of the effort that has to be expended in grinding. It is the kilowatt-hours required to reduce a ton of rock from an infinite size to 80% passing 100 microns. The formula allows a calculation to be made for other size ranges."

This article is a progress report of a program designed to quantitatively evaluate geological parameters to predict stable slope angles. The author feels that, although there does not appear to be any one technique or characteristics that will suffice as an index to the determination of stable slope angles, a combination of seismic methods as outlined here, detailed geological mapping and logging of core, and a better understanding of the angle of internal friction in rock types will permit accurate estimation. A mining engineer friend once remarked, "If we don&apos;t have pit slope failures, the slopes are too flat." Since economic justification of an open pit project is based upon ultimate pit slopes, we cannot wait until the pit is developed and slopes established by trial and error. Some combination of geological and/or geophysical techniques must be developed to permit accurate prediction of stable slope angles and to suggest modification of pit outlines to result in slopes enabling maximum economic yield. This presentation is a progress report of a program designed to quantitatively evaluate geological parameters to predict stable slope angles. The principle of the weakest link applies to any slope stability evaluation and necessitates detailed geological examination and recording of observations. Physical failure will occur along any surface where shearing stress exceeds shearing resistance. Rock conditions are seldom uniform even within a single cut or pit face, so stability conditions will vary. Consequently, both plan outline and ultimate slope limits must be tailored to the specific situation. Economic advantages to be gained by slight increases in slope angles in deep pits are well recognized and stimulate efforts to obtain maximum permissible slope angles. MECHANICS OF SLOPE FAILURE Excellent reviews on the nature of slope failure have been presented+2,6,8,11 For the purpose of this study, the writer considers failure to take place by one or more of three processes: 1) ravelling, 2) translation or slope failure, and 3) rotation or base failure (Fig. 1). The effects of increased pore water pressure in soils were recognized in 1923 by Terzaghi in his development of the concept of effective stress, and he has applied the same principle to jointed rocks designating water pressure as cleft-water pressure.8 Cleft-water pressure in a rock slope reduces normal pressure on the plane of failure, thus reducing shearing resistance and resulting in slope failure. In the following discussion it is assumed that adequate drainage is supplied to prevent any build-up of water pressure. This is the first step in any program to establish maximum slopes. Ravelling: Ravelling occurs in rocks with low cohesion and entails the free movement of individual fragments ranging from single rock falls to running ground.
