"The South African Code for the Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (the SAMREC Code or the Code) sets out minimum standards, recommendations and guidelines for public reporting of exploration results, mineral resources and mineral reserves in South Africa. The Code is being rewritten and updated, with work on-going since 2013. The revision is being undertaken to ensure the Code remains relevant, incorporates developments within the international mining industry and keeps abreast of technology. Some of the changes and their reasons are discussed. INTRODUCTION The South African Code for the Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (the SAMREC Code or the Code) sets out minimum standards, recommendations and guidelines for public reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Rreserves in South Africa. The Code is being rewritten and updated, with work on-going since 2013. The proposed 2016 update is not significantly different from previous versions of the Code. The revision is being undertaken to ensure the Code remains relevant, incorporates developments within the international mining industry and keeps abreast of technology. The Code sets out minimum standards, recommendations and guidelines for public reporting. However, reporting may be unclear, ambiguous, selective, obscure, distorted or unintelligible. Part of the purpose of the update is to provide better guidelines to Competent Persons (CPs) to ensure that the material information is being reported and that reporting is transparent in accordance with the guidelines of the Code. The information provided should, as required by the Code, be adequate to inform the “reader/investor or potential investor to make a reasonable and balanced assessment of the significance of the information”. The Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO) highlights the importance of the reporting Codes, as provided from a quote from their website (www.crirsco.com): The mining industry is a vital contributor to national and global economies. It is a truly international business that depends on the trust and confidence of investors and other stakeholders for its financial and operational well-being. Unlike many other industries, it is based on depleting mineral assets, the knowledge of which is important prior to the commencement of extraction. It is therefore essential that the industry communicates the risks associated with investment effectively and transparently in order to earn the level of trust necessary to underpin its activities."

According to a recently suggested effect of silicon on the re recrystallization textures of high-purity Fe-Si alloys with (111)[112] type rolling textures, the recrystallization texture for a rolled (110)[001] oriented iron crystal probably should be entirely different from that of a (110)[001] oriented 3 pct Si-Fe crystal. Comparative studies of iron and 3 pct Si-Fe crystals, however, show that both have (110)[Ool] recrystallization textures when the rolling textures are the (111)[112] type after reductions in thickness of about 70 pct. Qualitatively the results from the iron crystal are like those of polycrystalline high-purity 3 pct Si-Fe and not like polycrys-talline high-purity iron. The large effect previously noted probably involves unknown impurities or processing variables rather than silicon itself. Some problems on experimental and analytical procedure for a spherical X-ray specimen, which was machined from a laminated composite of sheet specimens, are treated in the Appendix. A possible strong effect of silicon on the textures produced in cold-rolled high-purity Fe-Si (HPFe-Si) alloys during primary recrystallization and normal grain growth was suggested in a recent paper.' All the textures were far from the random-orientation type, but that of iron, or of Fe-Si alloys of low silicon composition, was entirely different from the texture of 3 pct Si-Fe. The same effect was noted for the textures obtained prior to normal grain growth, i.e., for primary recrystallization.2 It is the main purpose of the present paper to provide some clarification of this silicon effect. All the HPFe-Si alloys from zero to 3 pct Si, which were rolled by two or more stages separated by anneals, developed (111)[112] type rolling textures.2 Thus, there was no effect of silicon on the rolling textures. Earlier, Gensamer and Mehl3 also found no effect of silicon on the rolling textures of Fe-Si alloys; they obtained the Kurdjum.ow and Sachs (K-S) rolling texture for iron,4 which is characterized as the three ideal components: (100)[011], (112)[li0], and (111)[112]. There is a difference between the HPFe-Si multiple-stage rolling texture and the K-S single-stage rolling texture, but this is a variable processing effect. Of interest here is the fact that the recrystallization textures from (111) [llZ] type rolling textures were different depending on the amount of silicon in the alloy. There was a relatively strong (110) [001] component in the recrystallization texture of HP 3 pct Si-Fe5,8,2 but no such component in HP 0.6 pct Si-Fe, for example; the recrystallization texture for the latter was two (111) [110] type components and a (111) fiber component 1,2 Several publications have shown that a strong (110) [001] recrystallization texture is derivable from a (111) [112] type rolling texture for 3 pct Si-Fe crystals reduced in thickness by about 70 pct.7-10 Furthermore it appears that the strongest of these (110) [001] recrystallization textures occurred when the orientation of the crystal prior to rolling was (110) [001].7 Barrett and evensoon11 found that the rolling texture of a (110)[001] oriented iron crystal was (111) [llj]. Accordingly, it seemed desirable to determine whether a (110) [001] oriented iron crystal, upon rolling and annealing, would behave like the 3 pct Si-Fe crystal (or the polycrystalline HP 3 pct Si-Fe) and thus produce a (110) [001] recrystallization texture contrary to the suggested silicon effect, or would behave like the polycry stalline HP iron or HP 0.6 pct Si-Fe and thus produce (lll) [110] type components in agreement with a silicon effect. Briefly, the idea here involves the use of more precisely defined textures to obtain if possible better control of important variables that affect the recrystallization process. PROCEDURE A (110) oriented crystal of Ferrovac "E" iron (99.9 pct pure) was prepared in sheet form 0.080 in. thick with the [001] direction parallel to the long dimension of the specimen.'' This crystal was etched to 0.073 in. thickness (to remove some small included grains) and then was cold rolled in a 6-in.-diam mill to a final thickness of 0.022 in. The rolling was unidirectional except for an inadvertent reversal at 0.061 in. thickness. At this thickness, and also at 0.040 in., the rolling was interrupted for transmission Laue photographs. Molybdenum Ka-radiation filtered with zirconium was used in a transmission method1' to obtain the cold-rolled (110) pole figure. The sample was a 0.002-in.-thick section taken from the central region of the 0.022-in.-thick cold-rolled crystal. For the primary recrystallization study, cold-rolled samples were etched from 0.022 to 0.021 in. thick and annealed in hydrogen at 850°C. The Granites Gold Mine Callie gold deposit is located 550 km northwest of Alice Springs in the Tanami Desert. Gold mineralisation occurs due to a complex interplay of geological factors which include but are not limited to favourable lithology, structure, alteration and quartz veining. High-grade mineralisation, while pervasive under favourable conditions, is highly variable over short distances and is very nuggetty. In contrast, the lithology and geological structures that host the mineralisation are very continuous. Orebody modelling techniques have evolved over time because of a growing understanding of the mineralisation controls. Modelling issues such as sampling and assaying accuracy, modelling method, data density, gold population statistics, geological interpretation and domaining, grade boundary and calculation conditions, and model block size are constantly being reassessed in an effort to increase understanding of the mineralisation controls and modelling accuracy. The evolution of the modelling process in response to increasing data levels and a growing understanding of the mineralisation controls has resulted in changes to the perception of the orebody size and style. This has caused the choice of underground mining method to be revised several times and the process to final mining method selection to take longer than usual. In order to achieve the planned production start-up date of July 1998 the process has been allowed to progress in parallel with development of the underground mine. This paper describes the resource modelling and mining method selection process applied to the Callie underground mine and some of the issues which have contributed to its evolution. Some conclusions that are relevant to the efficient planning and development of new mining projects in general are presented.

The extraction of copper from sulfate leaching liquor was investigated using Acorga M5640 commercial extractant in kerosene diluent. The effects of important factors such as the extractant concentration, contact time, liquor pH, and temperature were examined on the separation factor Cu/Fe and the extraction efficiency of copper. The results indicated that nearly 92.32% copper was extracted from the leach liquor at 10% (v/v) Acorga M5640 concentration, 1:1 aqueous/organic phase ratio, 20 min contact time, pH 2.5, and 25 °C temperature. Also, the further increase in the values determined had no positive impact on the extraction of copper. Under these conditions, the separation factor Cu/Fe was obtained about 29.64. The extraction mechanism was studied applying the plot of log(D) – 2 pH against log [extractant] and it proved the association of two moles of Acorga M5640 for the extraction of one mole of copper. McCabe–Thiele diagram was constructed and a single-step extraction process was found to obtain themaximumextraction. Additionally, thermodynamic datawere investigated and the extraction process was endothermic and non-spontaneous at 298 K (ΔH = 27.05 and ΔG = 15.52 kJ mol−1). Moreover, the loaded organic phase was stripped and 80.94% copper was recovered after 20 min using 10% sulfuric acid concentration.

This paper describes a number of aspects of the design and construction of a driven tunnel which forms part of the Boggo Road Busway project. The driven tunnel is 430m long with an excavated width of 15m and a full tunnel excavation height of 8m. The first section of driven tunnel was excavated under the heritage listed Boggo Road Jail for a length of 120m. The main jail buildings and perimeter walls were built in 1908 and are of brick construction. Ground cover over the tunnel beneath the jail site varied from 5.5m to 8m and as a consequence the predicted settlement values and their potential to cause damage to the buildings were critical to determining and obtaining approval for the selected tunnel alignment. The geology along the driven tunnel alignment was very variable, providing mixed face tunneling conditions and ranging from surface residual soils to high strength rock at depth. The maximum ground cover above the driven tunnel is 20m.

St. Peter sandstone is very different from the minerals and rocks that have been studied extensively in mining. On the one hand, it is brittle as characterized by an unusually high friction angle and steeply curved failure envelopes. On the other hand, it is friable, possessing extremely low, and in most cases zero cohesion. The scarcity of the ground control techniques for this particular mining environment has created many difficulties for the mine operators. In order to resolve these problems, the geotechnical properties of the St. Peter sandstones were investigated through a comprehensive research program, which included uniaxial test, triaxial test, porosity test, thin section, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The specimens used for the uniaxial and triaxial tests were specially prepared because of the highly friable nature of the St. Peter sandstone. Thin section, XRD and SEM were utilized to examine the effect of the microstructure of the St. Peter sandstones on its strength characteristics.

THE practice of drying phosphate in Florida is as old as the industry, which began a little more than half a century ago. The methods, however, have changed considerably. At first, the natural process of exposure to the sun and air was used, later supplemented by wood fires beneath open-air stationary dry kilns and drying towers of various designs. It was not until the early nineties that rotary driers came into use, and at first they were of very small design and fired with wood. As the industry grew and tonnage increased, so likewise grew the number and size of rotary driers, until today the largest installations are 6 ft. up to 7 ft. 6 in. in diameter, and 55 to 60 ft. long, fired with crude oil. The reasons for drying phosphate rock are: (1) to eliminate freight on water in the shipment and (2) to facilitate the good grinding qualities required by the buyers in their acidulation. Phosphate pebbles vary materially in natural characteristics and each property has a direct bearing on the processing. In making comparisons of cost and operating conditions, the following are usually taken into consideration: 1. The hard dense pebbles, which contain very little interior moisture and 6 to 8 per cent total moisture, usually produced from the low-grade deposits. 2. The lighter, porous pebbles, which contain 4 to 5 per cent interior moisture and a total moisture ranging from 9 to 15 per cent. 3. The product of recovery operations using oily reagents, containing from 15 to 25 per cent moisture. 4. The size of the pebbles. Usually the plus 5-mesh material is considered as "coarse rock"; the minus 5-mesh plus 24-mesh is "fine rock," and the minute particles below 24 mesh are called "concentrate." 5. The amount of moisture allowed in the dried product. The practice is generally to dry down to 1.5 to 2 per cent moisture. There is, however, an actual range in guarantee of from 1 per cent maximum to 3 per cent maximum.

Effective thermal conductivities were measured for seven samples of porous rocks through which gases or aqueous salt solution were flowing, parallel and countercurrent to the flow of heat. The results are analyzed in terms of the contributions of the solid and fluid phases to the total energy transfer. The solid contribution for the sandstone samples studied was found to be a Junction of the porosity and an effective thermal conductivity for the solid phase. The fluid contribution was a function of the Peclet number. Based upon the equations presented, the effective conductivity of the system can be estimated from the properties of the fluid, the flow conditions, and the porosity and pore-size distribution of the rock. INTRODUCTION Heat-transfer characteristics of porous media containing fluids are needed for the design and evaluation of thermal methods of petroleum production. The study reported here considers the problem of countercurrent flow of fluid and heat in sandstone rocks, and is a continuation of previous studies concerned with parallel and radial flow of energy and fluid in both rocks517 and beds of fine particles.6,10 In addition to these earlier works, Asaad,1 Kimura,4 Preston,8 Zierfuss and vlietll and waddams9 have reported effective conductivities for systems filled with stagnant fluids. There appears to be no published data on rocks through which fluids are flowing. The purpose of this study was to present such information and, particularly, to investigate the effects of properties of the rock and the flow rate on the results. The rock samples were naturally occurring sandstones from different locations and were similar to petroleum-bearing formations. The properties of the seven samples showing the range in porosities and permeabilities are given in Table 1. The mean pore sizes were calculated from mercury penetration data by averaging the radius with respect to pore volume. The details of this method and comparison with other procedures for estimating 7 are given elsewhere. Four fluids, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, helium and 10 weight per cent sodium-chloride solution were used with each sample. For Bartlesville sandstone, BA-5, runs were made at mean pressures from 15 to 250 psig using nitrogen. The other measurements were carried out at a mean pressure of 100 psig. The maximum temperature range eacountered was 70° to 300°F. The flow rate of fluid ranged from about 1.0 to 130 Ib/(hr)(sq ft), and this corresponded to a modified Reynolds-number range of 5 x 10-4 to 1.0. The variation in Prandtl number was 0.70 to 4.1. EXPERIMENTAL WORK The equipment consisted of apparatus to supply a constant flow of gas, or salt solution, at constant pressure to the bottom of a vertical test section, and metering and flow-regulation apparatus after the test section. "Teck and Aurubis are working together to commercialize a technology for the processing of copper arsenic sulphide concentrates that is economic and sustainable with regards to the environment and community. The pressure hydrometallurgical approach is a desirable option as mineral extraction and arsenic fixation can take place in a single autoclave vessel. A test work program was carried out where a range of copper concentrates with varying arsenic grades was processed under CESL leach conditions. This paper discusses the stability character (in terms of arsenic) of the resulting residues and their mineralogy. The basic ferric arsenate sulphate phase (BFAS; otherwise known as type 2) was identified as the main arsenic carrier. All CESL residues demonstrated high stability (<1 mg/L As) through a range of aggressive (pH and ORP) environmental leach conditions.INTRODUCTIONArsenic deportment and control in the copper industry needs an integrated approach involving each stage of the value chain, i.e. exploration, mine operation, refining process and mine closure. Teck Resources Limited (Teck), Canada’s largest diversified mining company and Aurubis, Europe’s largest copper producer, have formed a partnership to advance the application of CESL copper-gold technology for the development of high arsenic bearing copper resources (Bruce et al., 2011).Among the options for arsenic control in the metallurgical treatment of copper concentrates is the precipitation of ferric arsenate, which is widely accepted as the most suitable method for stabilizing arsenic (Ferron and Wang, 2003). The pressure hydrometallurgical approach to processing arsenic bearing copper concentrates is a favorable option as mineral extraction and arsenic fixation can take place in a single autoclave vessel. Under CESL pressure leaching conditions (150 °C, 1380 kPa) high copper extraction and arsenic (V) fixation is possible.Within the pressure leach autoclave, arsenate and ferric iron react to form scorodite type phases. The precipitate formed under CESL conditions is dependent on the Fe (III) /As (V) ratio and the tenor of cations and anions, particularly excess sulphate (Gomez et al., 2011a). Previous studies on CESL residues have found arsenic to be present as crystalline scorodite (FeAsO4.2H2O) (Bruce et al., 2011), basic ferric arsenate sulphate (BFAS: Fe(AsO4)1-x(SO4)x(OH)x·(1-x)H2O, where 0.3<x<0.7), and/or arsenate adsorbed on to hematite (Gomez et al. 2011b). Although not a focus of previous work, scorodite was the predominant precipitate formed when the concentrate Fe/As was <1.5 (Mayhew et al., 2010), and BFAS was the predominant precipitate when the concentrate Fe/As was >10 (Gomez et al. 2011b)."

Low-grade porphyry copper ores containing chalcopyrite as the primary mineral was leached by two strains of acidophilic, thermophilic microbes belonging to the genus Sulfolobus. Leach tests were conducted in glass columns heated to 60-70° C. Pinto Valley and San Manuel ores sized to -1/2 inch + 50 mesh were effectively leached by the thermophilic organisms, but pinto Valley and Cyprus Bagdad ores sized to -2 inch + 1/2 inch resisted leaching. Aeration did not contribute measurably to bacterial copper extraction, since two columns, one inoculated and one sterilized, having a rest/ leach cycle without recurrent aeration exhibited copper extraction patterns similar to those of the aerated columns. Distilled water can be substituted for 9K medium without diminishing copper extraction. Decreasing the pH of the leachate to about 1.8 enhanced the extraction of copper from pinto Valley ore with the thermophilic microbes. Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was found to be relatively ineffective at copper extraction from pinto Valley ore. Of eleven solvent extraction reagents tested, Adogen 364 and Warsol at concentrations of 0.1% and 0.012 were inhibitory to oxygen uptake by the two Sulfolobus strains. Di-2-ethyhexyl phosphoric acid at concentrations of 0.1%, 0.01% and 0.001% were totally inhibitory to the respiration of both organisms.

The adsorption of Cu2+ ions by Penicillium sp. displayed a dual rate, with an initial faster phase followed by a slower one. The adsorption rate increased with increasing pH due to chemical and biochemical reactions. The Cu-loading capacity of the biomass increased at higher initial Cu2+ concentrations. Above 40 degrees C the adsorption rate decreased which may be due to partial hydrolysis of biopolymers which are essential constituents of the cell wall. Adsorption kinetics followed the Freundlich isotherm and the equilibrium concentration that was calculated on the basis of the isotherm matched the observed value well. A series of theoretical adsorption curves were produced using mathematical correlations between the mass transfer coefficient, the Cu2+ ion concentration at equilibrium and at time t. The correlation between the theoretical and observed adsorption rates for different experimental conditions was good. It was concluded that the results from the study were best explained using a mass-transfer adsorption model

In This Chapter [Drill dust control: wet and dry Enclosed cabs on drills and mobile equipment Haul road dust control] Overburden drilling generates most of the respirable dust that affects workers at surface mines. Both wet and dry methods are available to reduce this drill dust. Overburden removal by mobile excavation equipment such as bulldozers, front-end loaders, and haulage trucks can be dusty, particularly under dry and windy conditions. Tightly enclosed cabs with dust filtration systems can substantially lower the dust exposure of both drill and mobile equipment operators. Haul road dust control can be achieved by water application or chemical application. DRILL DUST CONTROL [Drill dust is controlled with wet or dry systems. Wet systems can be more efficient, but may freeze in the winter. Dry systems require careful maintenance of the drill deck shroud. An improved deck shroud is shown.] Wet Suppression. Wet drilling systems pump water into the bailing air from a water tank mounted on the drill. The water droplets in the bailing air trap dust particles as they travel up the annular space of the drilled hole, thus controlling dust as the air bails the cuttings from the hole [Page 1991]. In wet drilling systems, typical water flow rates are 0.1 to 2.0 gpm depending on the size and type of drill and the moisture level of the overburden. The drill operator controls the flow using a control valve located in the cab. Some drills are equipped with a flow meter to give the opera-tor a visual sign of the flow rate. Raising the water flow will improve dust capture, but too much water causes operational problems. Because of this, the drill operator must exercise care in find-ing the best water flow rate.

"Kidd Creek Mines primarily employs sublevel blasthole stoping for underground mining operations. During pillar recovery in No.1 Mine and panel mining in No.2 Mine, the free standing fill exposures may reach a height of 100 m or more. Consequently, a competent consolidated rockfill has been required to fill the mined openings.Since 1976, a total of more than fifty stopes and pillars have been filled with over four million tonnes of backfill. Fill exposures, up to heights of 100 m, have stood up well after blasting adjacent to the backfill.The fill material consists of a graded aggregate, Portland cement and ground slag. Sand has been occasionally mixed in the fill material to serve as avoid filler. The aggregate is prepared in a fill crushing plant, transported underground through raises, and hauled to the filling stopes by conveyors in No. 1 Mine and by trucks in No.2 Mine.Two mixing methods are currently in use. No. I Mine utilizes the free fall of gravity; the fill materials are sprayed with cement slurry as the aggregate departs from the conveyor into a mixing culvert. The other is the use of a rotary mixer on a batch basis in No. 2 Mine.This paper describes the fill systems, filling operation s, and the backfill quality control practice, together with various testing results related to improving fill quality as well as reducing fill costs.IntroductionThe Kidd Creek minesite, located 27 km north o f the city centre of Timmins, Ontario, produces 4.5 million tonnes of copper, zinc, lead, and silver ores annually from its No. 1 and No.2 underground mining operations. INTRODUCTION Autogenous (including semi-autogenous) grinding has probably been the most important single innovation in milling practice for the last twenty years. However, the design of these units has been largely a matter of trial-and-error, since the normal empirical laws for the design of ball mill circuits do not apply with exactitude to autogenous grinding circuits. There have been examples of autogenous mills failing to achieve output or product specifications. It is worthwhile, therefore, to attempt to develop a more detailed and precise set of design laws, using the concepts of specific rates of breakages and daughter fragment distributions (1), and performing mill simulations by computer. This type of approach has been applied to ball and rod milling (2, 3,4,5), but even for these mills it is by no means complete as yet (6), because of the amount of experimental work involved. There has not been a strong incentive for industry to develop new design procedures in ball and rod milling because the prior back-log of experience with these mills makes for easy design by empirical comparsion with existing systems. The new approach has been followed mainly by University groups (7,8,9,10), although experience in Australia (9,11) has shown the advantages of the approach. Stanley (12) has applied the approach to results from a large autogenous mill, and we will use many similar concepts to his work, but extend the concepts to a more

Drilled shaft construction through caving soils has historically been an uncertain, risky and costly operation. Uncertain, because the zone of caving may or may not be known, risky because the loss of a shaft is disastrous, and costly because the Contractor, who faces these risks, must include large sums of money in his bid for shaft wall stabilization techniques. This case study will discuss the stabilization techniques that are typically used within the United States, and then present new technologies, born in Europe, that are being utilized in the States by Malcolm Drilling Company today.
