The Favona Underground Project is located approximately two kilometres east of Martha Mine Open Pit in Waihi, 150 km south east of Auckland, New Zealand.   The underground reserve of 354 koz Au contained in resources of almost 600 koz lies within 600 m of the existing process plant presenting an attractive development target in a challenging environment.   The Martha Mine Open Pit is surrounded by urban housing on the north western edge of Waihi township and the Favona Underground abuts residences on the eastern edge of town. Environmental, community and social licence aspects influence project strategies as the new underground mine extends mining in a town that is planning for closure of current open pit operations in late 2006.   The Favona Underground Project has successfully passed through a detailed feasibility study, the third stage of the five stage Newmont project appraisal system. Methodologies used in the feasibility study and parallel permitting draw on a high level of stakeholder involvement to streamline the development and permitting phases.   This paper discusses the project appraisal process and design innovation required for developing an underground mine adjacent to town.

"Hyperaccumulator biomass harvested after heavy-metal phytoremediation must be considered as hazardous waste that should be contained or treated appropriately before disposal or reuse. As a potential method to detoxify the biomass and to convert this material to a suitable bio-energy resource, the hydrothermal upgrading process was applied to remove heavy metals and upgrading crude bio-oil from Pteris vittata stems and leaves harvest. Parameters such as material granularity, temperature, Liquid/Solid (L/S, ml/g), pressure, duration and catalysts were examined for their effect on the removal efficiency of heavy metals and upgrading efficiency of crude bio-oil. Maximum heavy metal removal efficiency of>99% and crude bio-oil upgrading efficiency of 83% were attained with an 200 mesh (75 µm) granularity, LIS 40:1and23 MPa at 380°C in the presence ofO.l mol L-1 K2C03 for 30 min. GC-MS analysis results show that the resulting bio-oil mainly consists of benzene 11 %, ketone 42%, alcohols 14%, alkene 15% and ester 11 %, etc., and the relative molecular weight distribution lies in 94-282, carbon number distribution lies in 6-18, calorific value is 32MJkg-1.IntroductionPhytoremediation of soil or water with hyperaccumulator has been extensively explored in recent years [1-4]. Living plants can clean up soils or waterways. This approach exploits the ability of various plant species to thrive in high metal environments where large amounts of toxic elements are accumulated, such as heavy metals, and is particularly appropriate when slow remediation of relatively low metal concentrations is acceptable. Advantages compared with existing remediation methods include the minimal site destruction and destabilization, low environmental impact, and favourable aesthetics; advantages compared with biosorption include continuous in situ regeneration of the biomass, and the ability of living plant cells to supplement passive sorption of metals with metabolic mechanisms of metal uptake and detoxification [5-8]."

The above assumption was not made tacitly. On the contrary, it is based upon the very experiments embodied in my paper. Indeed, most of those experiments were undertaken with that end in view, i.e., to ascertain the existence of such a relation. Mr. Howe calls attention to the fact that of two pieces of manganese-steel, originally from the same bar, the coarser-grained showed the greater strength and ductility. This paper presents results from model and full-scale tests to assess the interface bond between a cast-in-place concrete seal slab and steel H-piles in cofferdams. Three different seal slab placement conditions - fresh water, salt water and bentonite slurry - were evaluated and the results compared against controls where no fluid was displaced by the concrete. Normal pile surfaces were investigated. Additionally, the situation of ?soil caked? piles was also tested. In the model tests, eight 15 cm deep, W6 x 15 sections were used for two different embedment depths of 1.5d and 2d, d being the depth of the section. In the full-scale tests, 16 specimens 35 cm deep (W14 x 90 sections) were tested with the embedment varied between 0.5d-2d. The results show that significant bond stresses developed even in the worst placement condition. Recommendations made for revising current values in specifications have already been implemented by the Florida Department of Transportation.

This paper outlines a framework for ensuring the success of the implementation phase that follows research and development of new mining technologies and systems. It is based upon recent and past lessons learned that have demonstrated the critical challenges to effective technology transfer, which frequently receive inadequate attention within the culture of the mining business. The paper focuses on mining automation implementation challenges and then outlines a Roadmap which is proposed as an integrated framework to deal with the key aspects of people, process and technology. This framework is built upon: assembly of a Strategic Team to develop a Roadmap; fully understanding the business requirements of the technology initiative; defining Key Performance Indicators in a Balanced Score Card; performing a Stakeholder Analysis to identify the affected groups; and finally developing a master Project Plan to execute the Roadmap.

Current practice in mining frozen, underground placers is to support the mine openings by leaving remnant pillars, which are kept frozen to maintain their stability. These pillars may be partially extracted depending on mining conditions, but this practice may be risky, and roof falls are common. Instead of allowing the mined-out areas to cave, the extracted entries could be filled with waste material, which would then be frozen, using cold ventilation air. A finite difference model for analyzing the effects of various parameters on the freezing of backfill in underground mines in the Arctic has been developed and tested. The model also accounts for properties unique to a frozen rock mass, including those that change with temperature. Examination of the characteristics of ice-cemented mining waste materials as backfill indicates that with proper engineering control, a backfill system can be designed for use in production mines. The system will allow increased extraction ratio while maintaining the stability of underground openings with minimum heat impact on the surroundings. These simulated results establish the relationships among the strength, the temperature, and the freezing characteristics of a given material. When coupled with site observations these relationships will facilitate the optimal design of ore pillar recovery methods.

ntroduction As the gold mining industry continues to develop in the Dominican Republic and Haiti, more deposits will undoubtedly be discovered that will be amenable to development. The Pueblo Viejo gold mine is currently in operation in the Dominican Republic. It has become an important component of that country's economy. Pueblo Viejo output is important to the government as a foreign currency earner. It is also said to be among the world's more successful gold mines. But, while Pueblo Viejo is successful, no other major gold discoveries have been made in recent years. Therefore, alluvial deposits of gold have caught the attention of geologists on the Island of Hispaniola. In the past four years, exploration and investigation of alluvial deposits have been initiated in both the Dominican Republic and Haiti. This type of activity is expected to continue over the next few years. Alluvial gold mining is rudimentary gold washing, done mostly by farmers. It is an old tradition, dating back at least 100 years, and is done by small, independent, or community farming villages in the mountains and plains of the Dominican Republic. Investigations in the DR Recently, alluvial gold investigations have been undertaken in well known locations of the Dominican Republic. One is in the Villa Altagracia area. Here, the terraces and gravels of the Haina River basin were examined, test-pitted, and assayed by Minera Altagracia, a local Dominican mining group. Results led to a new investigation by the state-owned Rosario Dominicana (RD), the company that mines the gold at Pueblo Viejo. Rosario tested areas previously investigated by Minera Altagracia. RD could not define the type of concentration that could justify an industrial-scale type of exploitation. The Haina River placers are located in the flats and valleys of Central Dominican Republic. They are classified as small-scale type of operations where local cooperatives can do the traditional gold washing. It is not now considered a dredgable project for a mining company. The next alluvial gold investigation was undertaken by the Dominican Department of Mines and others in an area of some 700 km2 (270 sq miles) in the northeast near Miches. Farmers have been washing gold in streams and excavating pits in various areas, particularly La Mina and have made a living. Government geologists panned several hundred streams and river tributaries. They also washed material from deep excavations. The results, however, were negative insofar as locating alluvial gold concentrations suitable for large-scale or industrial-scale exploitation. The most favorable locations were the terraces along the Jayán and Cuarón Rivers in the area of Miches. But the grade od concentration is poor. Actually, only traces of gold were found in these

"Abstract - The Xiaoqingling Mt. area is one of the most productive gold districts in China. The gold-bearing quartz veins are controlled by a series of east-west shear zones within the Archean Taihua Group, and related to the late Yanshanian (Cretaceous) granite. The major metallic minerals are native gold, electrum, pyrite, galena, chalcopyrite and sphalerite, with gangue minerals dominated by quartz, sericite, ankerite, and calcite. The host rocks are mainly amphibolite, plagioclase gneiss, and migmatites. Principal alteration is sericitization, silicification, pyritization, and carbonization.There are four generations of hydrothermal quartz in altered rocks of gold deposits. The earliest generation of quartz, (Q1), occurs in altered amphibolite gneiss and migmatite, and typically contains fluid inclusions with halite crystals (type A) and two phases, (L+V), of fluid inclusions (type B). The salinities of type A inclusions are 32 wt% to 52 wt%, with dissolution temperatures of halite crystals being from 155°C to 465°C. The second generation of quartz, (Q2), occurs as a fine-grained aggregate associated with sericite, and has small (less than 3 µm) type B inclusions. The third generation of quartz, (Q3), occurs in mylonitic, intensively altered rocks and specially beresite (a type of rock composed of quartz, sericite, and pyrite) near the veins, and contains large amounts of CO2-rich fluid inclusions (type C-fluid inclusions with liquid CO2 and type D-fluid inclusion with high density CO2). The CO2 contents of type C range from 72.6 to 87.4 mol% in gas phases, and 35.7 to 68.3 mol% in liquid phases, based on Laser Raman analysis. The homogenization temperatures of fluid inclusion type A and C are from 215°C to 380°C, and from 210°C to 325°C, respectively. The minimum trapping pressure of fluid inclusions is estimated as 80 MPa to 170 MPa for type A, and from 57 MPa to 190 MPa for type C, which approximate to those of fluid inclusions in vein quartz.The ?18O of quartz are from 10.4‰ to 11.0‰ for Q3 of altered rocks, and from 10.7‰ to 12.8‰ for stage I quartz. The calculated ?18O of fluid inclusions varies from -1.3‰ to 6.0‰. The ?D of fluid inclusions ranges from -67‰ to -59‰ and from -81‰ to -48 ‰, respectively. It is concluded that the water in the hydrothermal fluids both reacting with wallrocks and precipitating orebodies could have been mainly of magmatic and/or metamorphic nature. However, local meteoric water might have been important in late mineralization, because of a distinct oxygen-shift toward the meteoric water. The ?34S values for pyrite of the ores range from -7.1‰ to +7.1‰, with an average of +2.9‰. Those of other sulfides (chalcopyrite, galena, and sphalerite, range from -12.5‰ to 8.3‰. The ratios of lead isotopes for galena of the ores are: 17.06 to 17.31 (206Pb/204Pb), 15.43 to 15.74 (207Pb/204Pb) and 37.58 to 38.45 (208Pb/204Pb). In summary, ore-forming fluids in the Wenyu-Dongchuang gold deposits may have originated from a mantle and/or lower crust source, and ore materials were derived from the Precambrian basement, the Taihua Group."

The 26th Peruvian Mining Convention (Convención de Ingeneieros de Minas del Perú) was held Sept. 15 through 19, 2003, in Arequipa. The convention was sponsored by the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (Instituto de Ingeneiros de Minas del Peru). The Institute has been organizing these events since 1954. They are now held every other year. The conventions spotlight Peru’s mineral resources and have contributed to the tremendous growth of the Peruvian mining industry. This year’s meeting consisted of technical sessions, forums, field trips and social activities. It was held at the Tecsup Institute of Technology of Arequipa. More than 3,000 mining professionals attended. As always, the meeting was well organized, and participants expressed gratitude to the organizing committee for another successful meeting.

"Concentration of dense mineral phases (s.g. greater than 7) for characterisation of individual particles and mineral grains by electron microscopy is a well established technique for the detection and characterisation of valuable mineral phases. This presentation describes the type of data that can be generated when both the concentration and characterisation steps are carried to higher levels than typical. The concentration step is the gravity recoverable gold (GRG) protocol that has been used for over 100 ore samples. This protocol yields three concentrates that represent three progressive degrees of grinding and liberation. Three ore samples were subjected to the GRG protocol and three size classes of each concentrate were characterised using the mineral liberation analyser (MLA), an automated, EDX-based tool. This presentation briefly presents GRG and MLA technology, and then focuses on the results obtained: photos, images and databank, the latter used to evaluate the extent of particle liberation and particle shape.INTRODUCTIONThe practice of gravity concentration prior to characterization of mineral samples using electron beam microscopy is solidly established. Typically, a dense liquid such as tetrabromoethane (density: 2.97 g/cm3) is used to reject the light phase, typically carbonates and silicates. The heavy phase, mostly sulphides, oxides and precious metals, is then mounted in a polymer matrix and examined using beam microscopy.Both the pre-concentration and the sample preparation/examination steps have seen significant advances over the past ten years, but are not without problems. A major issue of preconcentration is that most dense liquids used are toxic, tetrabromoethane being a prime example. More recently, a dense liquid with little or no toxicity (sodium polytungstate, distributed by Sometu Inc.) has become commercially available, but its use is limited to relatively low s.g. splits around 3 g/cm3. Dense liquids are viscous, and their use is limited to particles coarser than 37 µm, although centrifuge separation can probably lower this limit to around 10 µm. Magnetogravimetric separators can achieve much higher specific density cuts, but upgrading below 100 µm or in the presence of magnetic minerals remains a problem. The use of centrifuge separators such as the 3-in Knelson Concentrator (KC MD3) or the Falcon 4-in SB (SB4) is particularly attractive since these units can easily process large masses (by laboratory standards) and achieve a cut density well above those of dense liquids."

This study of the preparation characteristics of the coals in Indiana County, Pa., is the second in a series of Bureau publications appraising the Nation's coking-coal reserves by counties and the practicability of upgrading marginal deposits to metallurgical standards. The first publication dealt with the preparation characteristics of the principal coal beds in Cambria County, Pa. Over 95 percent of the coal remaining in Indiana County is in the Upper Freeport, Lower Freeport, and Lower Kittanning beds. Isolated patches of Pittsburgh-bed coal are present, and the Upper Kittanning bed is found in minable thickness at some locations, but production from these sources is not large. The greatest production is from the Freeport beds, which account for nearly 70 percent of the Indiana County coal output. These beds usually contain two or more shale or hone partings and in many places are high in sulfur. The large proportion of bony coal in the Freeport beds 'produces a relatively high-ash product. Mining practices vary from place to place, but it is frequently necessary to leave certain bony portions of the bed in place in order to load a satisfactory product. Table 1 shows the county's coal production, by beds, during 1948.

The permeability of hydrogen through the a phase of palladium has been measured by a low pressure permeation technique under conditions such that bulk diffusion was the rate-controlling process. The observed permeability is described by the equation: J = 1.80 x 1O-3 P½exp(-3745)/RT) cc(stp)/sec/cm2/en over a range of hydrogen pressure, P, from 2.9 x 10-5 m Hg to 5.0 x 10-3 cm Hg, and over a temperature range, T, from 300" to 709°K. The fact that the permeability shows a square root dependence on pressure and a reciprocal dependence on thickness was taken as evidence that bulk diffusion, rather than surface reactions, was the rate-controlling process. The permeability data were used in conjunction with the solubility data of Salmon et al., to determine the diffusivity of hydrogen through palludium as: D = 4.94 x 10-3 exp(-5745/RT) cm2/sec There was no influence of sub structural defects observed over the temperature range employed. From the permeability data obtained, coupled with grain size measurements, it was concluded that the ratio of grain boundary diffusivity to bulk diffusivity was less than 105 over the range of temperature investigated. THE diffusive mass transport of hydrogen in the a phase of palladium has been studied previously by numerous investigators.' In spite of the large amount of attention this system has received, there is not good agreement between the results obtained in different investigations.' This is due in part to the fact that the mass transport was surface-limited during some of these studies, rather than being diffusion-controlled3-5 The reason for the disagreement in other cases is not clear. These studies made use of such techniques as rate of absorption from solutions6 and gases,' electrochemical potential,8 time lag,' and permeation10,11 to determine the mass transport behavior. Of these, the gas permeability technique is the only method which allows an easy test to determine if diffusion is the rate-controlling mechanism, thus eliminating the uncertainty regarding the limiting transport processes inherent in the other techniques. The two most recent permeability studies are those of Toda10 and Davis." Toda determined the permeability of hydrogen in the a phase of palladium over the temperature range from 170" to 290°C, and over the pressure range from 36 to 630 mm Hg utilizing a steady-state gas-permeability technique. Toda's result was: J = 1.41 x 10-3 P½ exp(-3220/RT) where J = specific permeability in cc(stp)/sec/cm2/cm, P½ = square root of the inlet pressure in (cm Hg)½, R = Universal gas constant, and T = temperature in deg Kelvin. Davis11 also employed a steady-state gas-permeability technique over the temperature range from 200" to 700°C and over the pressure range from 0.02 to 760 mm Hg. His result for the permeability of hydrogen in the a phase of palladium was: J = 3.15 x 10-3 P½ exp(-A440/RT) In the range of overlapping temperature for these two investigations, the values of the specific permeability calculated from the above two equations differ by a factor of about 1.8. In the present investigation, the permeation of hydrogen in the a phase of palladium was determined over a wide temperature range, 27" to 436oC, and over the pressure range from 2.9 x 10-5 to 5.0 x 10-3 cm Hg. This temperature range overlaps that of the previous investigations of Toda and Davis, but also covers the lower temperature range which has never before been investigated. The lower pressure range used here avoided the interaction between the dissolved hydrogen atoms observed at higher hydrogen concentrations.' MATERIALS The as-received palladium specimens were cold rolled from a casting and were supplied as 5.08 cm discs of 0.508 and 0.762 mm thickness. According to J. Bishop and Company specifications, the composition of the discs was 99.95 pct Pd, the balance being Cu, Ag, Au, and Ir. In order to obtain samples of varying grain size, the as-received discs were then heat treated. Sample 1 was treated for eight minutes in a nitrogen atmosphere at 810°C and then air-cooled. Sample D was heated first to 550°C in helium. The helium atmosphere was then immediately replaced by hydrogen and the temperature was slowly raised to 1220°C and held for 22 hr. The sample was then cooled to 550°C where the hydrogen was replaced by helium and the disc was further furnace-cooled to room temperature. Sample H was given the same heat treatment, only with hydrogen substituted for helium below 550°C. The reason that hydrogen was not used throughout the entire annealing cycle for samples D and H was to prevent the distortion encountered by low-temperature cycling in hydrogen observed by Darling." The latest in mining technology and equipment will be show-cased this month at MINExpo International 2004. The event, billed as the world’s largest mining equipment exhibition, is set for Sept. 27-30at the Las Vegas Convention Center. MINExpo, sponsored by the National Mining Association (NMA), is held every four years in Las Vegas, NV. This year’s event is expected to attract more than 40,000 mining industry professionals and executives from around the world. And several key members of the U.S. Congress and other senior government officials are expected to attend. In addition, senior industry and government officials from Asia, Europe, Australia, Africa and South America will be on hand.

The Uetliberg Tunnel in Switzerland is the longest tunnel in Zurich?s new Western Bypass Expressway, connecting the Birmensdorf bypass in the west with the existing Zurich-Chur national motorway in the east. Thus the tunnel links the Zurich-West motorway interchange with the Zurich-South interchange (shown in Figure 1). The Uetliberg Tunnel project comprises two parallel tubes, each about 4.4 km long. The two tunnel tubes are connected every 300 m by a transverse walkway and every 900 m by a transverse roadway (Figure 2). The SOS niches are spaced 150 m apart. Portal stations with machinery rooms are located at the west and east portals. The tunnel falls with a gradient of 1.6% from the west portal at Wannenboden to the east portal at Gänziloo. The Project costs are about CHF 1.12 billion. The carcass construction started in March 2001. The Opening of the Uetliberg Tunnel is planed in spring 2009.

Jet grout column formation at large depths are prone to several uncertainties, such as inaccuracy in setting out boreholes, drilling deviation, soil variability and reduced jetting energy at the nozzle. This would result in shorter cutting distance of the jet, with potential lack of interlock between grouted columns. A design strategy for mitigating the risk should include a soil investigation program aimed at discovering potential variability in soil conditions at the locations of jetting. Determination of soil strength profiles with depth would be useful for evaluation of jetting parameters and prediction of the achievable cutting distance at any depth. Selection of design column spacing should include allowance for setting out accuracy, verticality of the boreholes and the achievable jet cutting distance. For deep jet grouting operations, it would be necessary to take into account the energy losses at the nozzle inlet; however the increase in the presiding pressure at the nozzle outlet at depth is small relative to the range of jetting pressures commonly employed and would not affect the cutting distance to any significant degree. Design column spacing should not be so close as to cause problems with ?masking? which may lead to localized ungrouted zones of soil. For effective field control, boreholes should be cased up to the top elevation of the grouted zone so that the orientation of the borehole can be measured prior to grout injection. An analytical equation for calculating the cutting distance is proposed for adjusting jetting parameters where necessary to compensate for drilling deviation and changes in soil conditions. It is preferable that jet grouting trials be executed at elevations that correspond to the actual production jet grouting depths for accurate evaluation of jet cutting performance.

An aluminizing dross which is accumulating as a waste material in substantial quantities was tested for possible use as a steel deoxidizer. This material, consisting mainly of aluminum, silicon, and iron, was used to deoxidize laboratory-scale melts ranging from 7 to 100 pounds. Oxygen analysis showed that the aluminizing dross was effective in reducing oxygen levels in steel. A direct comparison with aluminum wire showed the dross material to be at least as effective. Under similar test conditions with 7-pound melts, 3 grams of aluminum reduced the oxygen concentration from 210 to 175 ppm, while 4 grams of aluminizing dross (equivalent to approximately 2 grams aluminum) reduced the oxygen concentration from 250 to 170 ppm. An additional 4 grams of aluminizing dross produced a final oxygen concentration of 140 ppm.

The alkaline ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) leach process for extracting tungsten from scheelite (CaW04) ores has been examined for the treatment of low grade (<0.5 per cent WO,) residue dumps. The process has been considerably simplified by applying solvent extraction directly to the leach liquor.Ammonium paratungstate is thereby produced in a one step process and this obviates the need to physically recover EDTA prior to recycling. This modified process should be an economical method of tungsten extraction.

Within a 30-mile radius of Sudbury, Ontario, the Ontario division of the International Nickel Co. of Canada, Ltd., operates nine underground mines and two open pits. Prior to 1966, ore removal from the underground workings was mainly by scraping, using 125-hp electric slushers in blasthole and caving mining, and 30-hp or less air-operated slushers for fill- method mining.
