The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) is using laboratory and computer-based techniques to investigate the post- failure behavior of yielding pillars and pillar reinforcement techniques to control entry deformation. Poorly dimensioned yield pillars, can cause adverse ground conditions. Laboratory studies to evaluate various reinforcement techniques for controlling yield pillar deformation were conducted. A cracking and crushing model is used to evaluate potential tensile and compressive failure planes within pillars of various widths to assess the degree of yielding and stress redistribution. The use of an elasto-plastic model to evaluate the effect of various reinforcement on yield pillars is also discussed. These procedures effectively account for the residual pillar strength, important in yield pillar design.

This report describes the work done to develop a coal mining machine to increase productivity and recovery from thin seams beyond the highwall, in addition to decreasing the miner's susceptibility to to highwall hazards. First, radar transducers were adapted to measure coal thinkness and detect rock and coal interfaces; Then, the radar was incorporated into a cutterhead with steering controls. Next, visual displays were designed to show cutter position in the coal seam, and anticipated change In coal seam inclination. Finally, development of a telemetry system made remote control of the cutterhead possible. Simultaneously, a high-performance extended depth (HPxD) auger machine was designed with an automatic system to handle 600 ft of 36-in. diameter dual spiral flight conveyor sections. A two man crew controls all operations from a weather conditioned cab outside the VDZ, either at night or day time. As a primary mining tool, working 4000 hr/yr (2 shifts/day) recovering 60% of the coal 600 ft beyond the highwall, production to 500,000 ton/yr can be achieved. The Bureau of Mines is involved in research directed toward the utilization of municipal solid waste. One of the primary objectives is the recycling of the magnetic fraction of municipal solid waste (raw refuse). This is consistent with one of the Bureau's goals, which is to minimize the requirements for mineral commodities by maximizing metals recovery from secondary domestic resources, In this investigation, cupola trials were made using combinations of refuse scrap with shredded automobile scrap under basic and acid slag practices. Furnace operating information and the behavior of alloying and tramp elements was obtained. The research showed that it is possible to utilize up to 60 percent refuse scrap in the cupola under basic practice and 30 percent under acid practice, Aluminum in refuse scrap, present in bimetallic cans, increased the recoveries of silicon and manganese charged to the cupola. Increased use of refuse scrap provided iron of lower sulfur. The alumina resulting from oxidation increased the slag volume. The aluminum and tin contents of the iron increased with increasing levels of refuse scrap in the charge. Lead was not a problem with respect to contamination of the iron. In basic practice, operation of the cupola was satisfactory since all slags were adequately fluid. In acid practice, operation became troublesome above the 45-percent level. Under both practices, the cupola iron melting rate decreased. Particulates in scrubber water and stack condensate samples contained lead, zinc, and tin, and the dust load increased. The tensile and transverse strengths of the iron produced under both practices are reported.

In the presence of oxygen, galena is oxidized in an aqueous medium containing ammonium acetate in accordance with the following reaction: PbS + 1/2 0, + 2 NH~Ac -» PbAc, + So + 2 NH: + H2O. This reaction was studied in an autoclave under oxygen pressure by polarographic measurement of the concentration of lead ion in solution. Oxidation rate is parabolic. The reaction products are lead acetote and elemental sulfur, the latter forming a film on the galena crystal. Reaction kinetics appear to be determined by the diffusion of lead from the galena phase to the solution interface through the film of sulfur. RECENT applications of pressure leaching on a commercial scale have emphasized the metallurgical importance of the oxidation of sulfide minerals in aqueous media by oxygen under pressure. Research experience has shown that sulfates, thio-nates, and metal oxides are the products of humid oxidation of sulfide minerals in basic solutions. The metal oxides may be solubilized in the presence of a complexing ion.' Certain oxide minerals are also amenable to treatment by this type of oxidation.' Several kinetic studies have been made of reactions of this type. Stenhouse' found that pyrite (FeS?) oxidized in a sodium hydroxide solution to produce a soluble sulfate and an insoluble layer of iron oxide and that the kinetics of the reaction were controlled by oxygen diffusion through the oxide layer. Andersen' studied the oxidation of galena (PbS) in a sodium hydroxide solution under oxygen pressure. He found the lead and sulfur to be simultaneously oxidized to produce plum bite ions and sulfate ions, and that the reaction rate was proportional to the surface area of the galena. The kinetics appeared to be determined by the reaction of oxygen and water with the galena surface. In each of the above reactions the metal and sulfur components of the mineral were oxidized simultaneously and at equal rates. In the present study the alkaline medium has been replaced by an approximately neutral solution of ammonium acetate in which lead sulfate is soluble. Under the conditions no sulfate was produced and no sulfur could be detected in the solution. The metal component of the mineral was solubilized and the liberated sulfur remained as a film of elemental sulfur on the surface of the galena crystal. A kinetic study of this reaction was undertaken to establish the kinetic mechanism and to determine the rate controlling step. Specific reaction rates were determined by oxidizing crystals of galena of measured surface areas in an autoclave maintained at the desired temperature and oxygen pressure. The rate of reaction was followed by measuring the concentration of lead in the ammonium acetate solution with a cathode ray polarograph, employing stationary platinum electrodes incorporated in the autoclave. The Missouri University of Science and Technology?s (Missouri S&T) Experimental Mine is a teaching and research facility which has been excavated in limestone by mining engineering students over almost 100 years. The mine is currently being extended to a second level. Available fans for ventilation are two surface fans of 24 kW and two underground booster fans of 12 kW. The design of a ventilation network in conjunction with multi surface fans and booster fans entails a complex procedure. Ventsim Visual software modeling has been used for network analysis to determine the optimum surface and booster fans locations, blade settings, and speeds. Both natural and mechanical induced ventilation pressures have been taken into account. Three working faces on each level have been designated as target points that minimum air quantities are required. The model has been calibrated against a pressure and quantity survey. Design of ductwork, door/stopping positions and different fans characteristics have been examined. The optimum flow rate at identified working faces, efficiency and minimum energy losses and annual network power cost determine the best scenario. The optimum design has been determined for the ventilation network for the next 100 years. The optimum flow rate across working faces is the key criterion selected.

This paper describes experimental procedures for the calibration of capillary tubes to be employed as comparison standards in gas flow-rate measurements and considers several types of flow which were observed in the calibration of seven capillaries of varying diameter. It is shown that under certain experimental conditions deviations from Poiseuille flow are observed which may not be attributed to turbulence, and that this flow behavior may be described empirically by introducing the classical kinetic energy correction into the Poiseuille equation. INTRODUCTION Techniques have been developed for the measurement of the volume rate of flow of nitrogen through glass capillary tubes as a function both of the differential pressure applied and of the absolute gas pressure. Capillary tubes thus calibrated are frequently used to determine the rate of gas flow through a porous sample in the measurement of slip-corrected permeability. The purpose of this note is to describe the calibration procedure and to discuss some observed deviations from the ideal flow behavior predicted by the Poiseuille equation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The volume flow rate of nitrogen as a function of the differential pressure was determined experimentally for a series of seven glass capillary tubes of varying diameter. As is shown in Table 1, the capillary radii in the series ranged from 0.004 cm for K1 to 0.07 cm for K7. The capillary tubes were cut from capillary tubing purchased on special order from several manufacturers and the bore radii were determined by microscopic measurement. The gas volume flow rate was measured for each capillary tube at a series of differential pressures in the range from 0 to 3 cm of mercury and at average absolute pressures of 1.0, 2.5, 4.0, and 6.0 atm. Experimental Procedure for Small Capillaries A schematic diagram of the apparatus used to calibrate the three smallest capillaries, Kl, K2, and K3, is shown in Fig. 1. By means of a standard Ruska Instrument Corp. volumetric pump (equipped with a synchronous motor drive, two stages of gear reduction, and a quick-change lathe gear box), nitrogen was displaced by mercury from a metal cell immersed in a constant-temperature bath. The pump, the line to the cell, and a part of the cell were filled with mercury. As mercury was forced into the cell, it displaced nitrogen which passed through the capillary tube being calibrated and into a large container with a volume of approximately 30 liters. Since the volume of this container was very large compared to the total volume change of the gas resulting from the action of the displacement pump, the absolute pressure of the system was essentially constant throughout any one run. Prior to any determination this pressure could be set at any desired level by means of an auxiliary nitrogen cylinder. The differential pressure across the capillary was measured with a Meriam Red Oil manometer and recorded together with the corresponding pump displacement rate which was equal to the gas flow rate. By repeating this process for a series of different displacement rates at each of the absolute pressures of interest, the data necessary for plotting the calibration curves for capillaries K1, K2, and K3 were obtained. All calibration measurements were made in a constant temperature room to minimize errors due to temperature fluctuations. In each run. the flow was maintained until equilibrium was established. Experimental Procedures for Large Capillaries The flow rates through Capillaries K4, K5, K6, and K7 required to obtain the pressure drops desired were larger than could be obtained from available constant displacement pumps, and it was thus necessary to employ an alternative calibration procedure. The arrangement of apparatus used in calibrating these capillaries at an average pressure of one atmosphere is shown in Fig. 2. Each capillary was calibrated by flowing nitrogen through the capillary and recording the differential pressure as a function of the flow rate. The effect of liner wear on SAG mill performance has gained much attention in recent years. It is commonly observed that the three key performance criteria of SAG milling; throughput, power and product size all improve as the liner wears.The increase in throughput is generally ascribed to the increase in the grate apertures and the increase in mill volume due to the wear of these components. Whilst the decrease in product size is attributed to the reduction in lifter height and angle, resulting in more breakage by means of attrition and abrasion.Though it is widely acknowledged that the wearing of liner components such as Lifters, Plates and Grates have a significant impact on mill performance, their individual contribution to changes in mill performance has been unclear, and resultantly lead to questions like; what percentage of the throughput increase can be attributed to the increase in mill volume (plate wear)? and how much can be attributed to the increase in grate aperture (grate wear)?It has been found that through the use of grinding surveys, analysis of production data and JKSimMet it was possible to separate the effects of changing liner profile, increasing mill diameter and increasing grate aperture on the mill performance allowing for the quantification of each.The outlined methodology allows for both troubleshooting of problem liner components which reduce milling efficiency in their wear life as well as providing a basis for a more quantitative approach to liner design and reline scheduling.CITATION:Toor, P, Powell, M, Hilden, M and Weerasekara, N, 2015. In Japan, pile foundations have been used extensively for buildings, bridges and port facilities. A large number of steel pipe piles were first used in the 1960's and the amount of steel used in foundations increased by 1973 to one million tons. This report describes current practice in the actual use of large diameter and long steel pipe piles in Japan, related to their performance: including consideration of pile size, hammer types used for driving the results of field tests measuring stress occurring in the piles and the driving formulae currently being used in practice in Japan.

If the use of explosives is anticipated then such developments will attract a number of so-called ‘planning conditions’ relating to the blasting operation. This paper will outline a ‘typical’ set of conditions and how operators ‘plan to comply’. British Standards relating to both human and structural response are also reviewed and contrasted to the typical planning conditions previously outlined.

In order to determine the potential availability of alumina to feed U.S. aluminum smellers, the Bureau of Mines evaluated 39 domestic mines and deposits of bauxite, alunite, and high-alumina clays and found that substantial increases in alumina prices would be necessary before nonbauxitic deposits could become competitive with bauxite. As part of the study, a price-tonnage relationship was developed indicating the quantity of alumina that could be produced from known deposits at various alumina prices and at a 15-pct discounted cash flow rate of return on the required capital investment. All capital and operating costs were calculated in August 1980 dollars. The domestic bauxite reserve base comprises three operating bauxite mines in Arkansas containing some 15.6 million metric tons of recoverable alumina (A1203). Ferruginous bauxites, clays, and alunites fall into the subeconomic category of identified aluminum resources, which, at the demonstrated level, contain over 4,000 million metric tons of alumina that are estimated to be recoverable. Analyses indicate that, at the demonstrated resource level, a total of some 15.6 million metric tons of alumina, all from three active Arkansas bauxite mines, is recoverable at a 1980 price of $0.12 per pound ($264 per metric ton) of alumina. A price of approximately $0.26 per pound ($573 per metric ton) of alumina would be required for production of the total U.S. resource. Thus, unless new technological breakthroughs occur that could make alternate sources of alumina competitive with bauxite, U.S. dependence upon imported bauxite will continue to increase.

The organisation of the Conference will be in the hands of a Conference Committee under the chairmanship of Mr B. F. Warner. The emphasis of the Conference will be on technical solvent extraction of both inorganic and organic substances, including basic principles and practical applications. Sessions are envisaged covering the chemistry of solvent extraction, industrial processes and economics, the performance of contacting equipment and the underlying phenomena involved, and the response characteristics and control of such units. The Conference Committee will welcome offers of papers for presentation at the Conference. SOUTH AFRICAN TUNNELLING CONFERENCE TO BE HELD IN 1970 A South African Tunnelling Conference, to be known as TUNCON 70, is to be held in Johannesburg during the latter half of July, 1970. South Africa, in common with other countries, has a vital and growing interest in tunnelling. Apart from the 800 kilometres of tunnel excavated annually in the gold mines, the 82 kilometre-long Orange-Fish Tunnel is being driven to carry water from the Orange River to the drier areas of the Eastern Cape Province. This and the realization that services such as water and transport are increasingly being carried underground in various parts of the world have emphasized the need for a forum at which the technology and potential of tunnelling can be discussed. TUNCON 70 is being supported by three professional engineering societies representing some 6,000 engineers, namely, the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, the South African Institute of Civil Engineers and the South African Institution of Mechanical Engineers, as well as by the Geological Society of South Africa. The conference has three main purposes. Firstly, to pool and exchange expertise by authorities on tunnelling; secondly, to discuss future developments in tunnelling technology with the aim of making those concerned with long-term planning aware of the potentialities of tunnelling; thirdly, to propose standards for tunnel shapes and sizes. Adoption of standards for tunnelling equipment and accessories would be a major step forward in improving tunnelling efficiency. The five themes of the conference will be: tunnel utilisation, exploration, design, construction and standards. The conference will be held at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, from 21st to 24th July, 1970. The abandoned Belle Eldridge Mine near Deadwood, South Dakota, is on land controlled by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The mine produced lead and zinc during the first half of the 1900s. Because of acidic drainage and elevated levels of metals in tailings and waste rock, the site was evaluated in 1998 and 1999. After evaluation, the mine was remediated during 1999-2001 by the BLM. Since remediation, values of pH in water samples have been nearly neutral and specific conductance values have been much lower than before remediation. The Grizzly Gulch forest fire of July, 2002, consumed much of the Belle Eldridge site and resulted in greater than normal erosion and sediment flushing during the months following the wildfire. Had the site not been remediated and the tailings emplaced within a capped repository, generation of acidity and off-site migration of heavy metals within sediments could have been severe at downstream locations.

Humme1,7 Pirson,8 Tagg,3 Watson,9 and others have pointed out the possibility of building up approximations of multilayer resistivity curves with suitable combinations of two-layer curves. Many three-layer curves can be constructed in this way to a good degree of accuracy, and special types of four-layer curves can be approximated. It is very likely that as the number of layers increases, the method of combination will not give good approximations except in very special cases. In the analysis of actual field data, the author has found that many obviously multilayer curves can be solved partially with a good degree of accuracy, using the theory that thin adjacent beds may be considered as one layer or zone, and applying two-layer theory to the extremities of the field curve. The Cougar Spar property is in southwestern Beaver County, Utah, approximately 35 miles by road northwest of Lund, a station on the mainline of the Union Pacific Railroad (fig. 1). Original fluorspar discoveries on the property were made a. short time before 1941. During 1941 lessees produced approximately 600 tons of ores averaging 40 percent CaF2. Bureau of Mines engineers examined the property in 1942 and recommended development. Work was begun in December 1942 and completed in October 1943. The area was mapped by members of the Federal Geological Survey during the project period. Development included surface trenching; drifting, and crosscutting, a short distance below the outcrop. The surface work comprised a total of 440 linear feet of bulldozer and hand trenches. A total of 550 feet of workings was driven on the 100-foot level. Samples were taken for assay from the trench exposures and from the underground workings as work progressed. Pocks in the area of the Cougar Spar property are igneous and consist mainly of fine-grained tuff and quartz monzonite porphyry. The fluorspar mineralization occurs in a northwest fault zone.

This paper presents a suitable method for predicting gas-free oil viscosities at temperatures up to 500F knowing only the API gravity of the oil at 60F and the viscosity of the oil measured at any relatively low temperature. The API pravity and the one viscosity value are used as parameters to determine the slope of a straight line on the ASTM slanaord viscosity-temperature chart. Then, knowing the slope of the line and one point on the line, the vrscosities at higher temperatures can be determined. The line slope correlations were developed at I00 and 210F since viscosity data are frequently measured at these temperatures. A procedure is given for predicting line slopes from measurements at other tetnperatures. A nomogram is furnished for solving the relationship. The correlation has been evaluated at temperatures up to 5OOF for oils varyzng in gravity from 10 to 33 " API. The correiution is applicable only to Newtonian fluids. Comparison at 500F of true viscosities and those predicted from values at 100F shows an average deviation of 3.0 per cent (maximum deviation of 6.0 per cent). Predictions from the values at 21 0F for the same oils how an average deviation of 1.5 per cent (maximum deviation of 3.4 per cent). INTRODUCTION Correlations have been developed by Beal' and by Chew and Connally' for predicting viscosities of gas-saturated oils at reservoir conditions. Each of these correlations requires a knowledge of the solution gas-oil ratio and the viscosity of the gas-free oil at the reservoir temperature. For temperatures below 350F, measurements of the gas-free oil viscosities can be made easily using commercially available equipment. In thermal recovery processes, however, reservoir temperatures well in excess of 350F are encountered. Viscosity measurements at such conditions are more difficult and time consuming and require modification of existing equipment or the construction of new equipment. Measurements are further complicated by the difficulty of handling highly viscous oils associated with thermal recovery processes. Therefore, it is desirable to have a correlation which allows accurate prediction of viscosities at high temperatures. A commonly used technique for predicting viscosities at high temperatures is to measure the viscosities at two lower temperatures, plot the values on ASTM standard viscosity-temperature charts and extrapolate to the temperatures desired. If either of the values is slightly in error, the extrapolated value can be significantly in error. To justify an extrapolation, three points are actually necessary. This procedure can consume much time, particularly with heavy oils. Considering the cost of viscosity measurements, it would be desirable to eliminate the need for direct measurements by having correlations which would allow viscosity predictions from other physical or chemical properties. Beal1 investigated the possibility of correlating viscosity with oil gravity at temperatures from 100 to 220F. While showing that a general relationship exists, he also found significant deviations. It is possible that correlations will be developed based on oil composition as more information becomes available. While not eliminating the need for viscosity rneasurements, the method presented herein requires that only one viscosity measurement be made. The API gravity must also be known. The theory is based on the fact that the viscosity of paraffins (high gravity) changes less with temperature than does the viscosity of naph-thenes or aromatics (low gravity). The gravity. therefore, is used as a parameter to determine the slope of a straight line on the ASTM standard viscosity-temperature charts. The correlation is applicable only to Newtonian oils, and deviations due to thermal decomposition and nonhomo-geneity cannot be predicted. Oils containing additives have not been evaluated. PROCEDURE Fifteen oils were used in developing the correlation; eight were crudes and seven were processed oils. Oil gravities varied from 9.9" API (naphthene base) to 32.7' API (paraffin base). The temperature range studied was 81 to 516F. Each oil used had a minimum of three viscosity measurements and each plotted essentially as a straight line on the ASTM charts. In all, 91 viscosity measurements were used in the correlation. Saybolt, rolling ball and capillary tube viscometers were used for the measurements. Viscosity data for Samples 1, 2, 4, 7, 10, 11 and 14 were obtained in Texaco, Inc. laboratories. The data for Samples 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 12 and 15 were from Fortsch and Wilson,3 and data for Sample 13 were from Dean and Lane.' All data points used in the correlation are plotted in Fig. 1. Intrinsic remediation is the effect of natural attenuation mechanisms - dilution, dispersion, sorption/precipitation and biodegradation - reducing contaminant concentrations in ground water to specified levels at predetermined compliance points in the aquifer. Current monitoring and modeling for post closure was used to assess the current and long-term potential of intrinsic remediation of contaminated seepage originating from a large reactive (sulfidic) tailings impoundment near Questa, New Mexico. It is concluded that the natural attenuation mechanisms of precipitation within the tailings (as a result of buffering) and dilution/dispersion within the aquifer are currently active and likely sufficient to reduce contaminant concentrations to below state standards in the long-term. Other natural attenuation mechanisms such as sorption and biodegradation within the receiving aquife4s) were not assessed here, but are likely further reducing contaminant concentrations. Active interception and recovery of the seepage water is being maintained until monitoring demonstrates that intrinsic remediation has successfully achieved the level of water quality control required.

In Xian, China, compaction by means of soil (or lime-soil) piles is one of the effective methods widely used for densifying loess and eliminating its collapsibility. However, as a result of groundwater table rising, it is no longer applicable in many areas. This paper is the summary of the first-time use in Xian of sand-gravel compaction piles aimed at densifying the miscellaneous fill (already partially under water) and saturated loess at a certain project site. In-situ tests, conducted before and after the treatment and including several kinds of penetration tests backed up and confirmed by a set of plate loading tests, yielded very satisfactory results, strongly testifying to the viability of the method.

Les haldes à stériles contenant des minéraux sulfureux réactifs constituent un milieu favorable à la production du drainage minier acide (DMA). Au sein de ces haldes, les processus physiques, géochimiques et biologiques qui mènent à la production du DMA sont nombreux et complexes. Un des aspects critiques qui affecte la génération de DMA est la distribution et le mouvement de l?eau dans les roches stériles. La modélisation numérique est un outil qui permet de comprendre, pour éventuellement contrôler, les mouvements de l?eau (et donc réduire la production du DMA) dans les haldes pendant la période d?exploitation de la mine et à sa fermeture. Plusieurs simulations numériques des écoulements non saturés dans des haldes ont été effectuées. Pour ces simulations, on a considéré divers types de matériaux, diverses conditions atmosphériques et diverses configurations géométriques. Les simulations réalisées montrent que l?on peut contrôler les mouvements de l?eau en introduisant des couches de matériaux fins intercalées dans les haldes formées de matériaux grossiers. Des couches horizontales ne sont cependant pas appropriées puisqu?elles peuvent, dans certains cas, favoriser la création de zones humides susceptibles d?amplifier les effets du DMA. Une faible inclinaison des couches de matériaux fins vers l?extérieur permet de palier à ce problème. Les couches inclinées favorisent un drainage des haldes vers la périphérie. Ceci a pour effet de garder sèche une grande partie des stériles et de réduire, par le fait même, la production du DMA.
