INJURY experience and employment data are presented in this chapter for metal and nonmetal mines, stone quarries, sand and gravel pits, iron blast-furnace slag plants, and metallurgical plants (including ore-dressing and nonferrous reduction plants and refineries) in the United States. Employment and injury experience data for all mineral industries are given in volume II. The 1962 figures are preliminary summations which are subject to revision. They were compiled from all reports from producers received by the Bureau of Mines through April 15, 1963. The data for metal, nonmetal (except well and brine operations), stone, and sand and gravel operations were collected by a mandatory reporting system under the provisions of the act of September 26, 1961, Public Law 87-300 (75 Stat. 649). The act authorized the Secretary of the Interior to study the various aspects of safety in metal and nonmetal mines (excluding coal mines) and report the findings 2 years sub-sequent to the enactment of the law. Data on nonmetal well and brine plants and nonferrous reduction plants and refineries were reported voluntarily by the operators. METAL MINES Preliminary data for the metal mining industry comprise reports on 1,871 mines and pits. The combined fatal and nonfatal injury-frequency rate was 31.95 per million manhours in 1962, a decrease of 8 percent from the similar rate of 34.54 in 1961. Metal operations reported a total of 61 fatal and 3,201 nonfatal injuries.

Measures taken by mining companies around the world to reduce their carbon footprints are becoming increasingly important in the sector securing its social licence to operate. The options for measures reduce to three categories of activity: i) demand reduction by avoiding unnecessary waste of supplied energy, ii) improving the utilization of energy that does have to be consumed and iii) adopting low carbon energy production options?including renewable energy. As well as the environmental imperative, as the prices of electricity, gas and liquid fuels increase, so the economic case for activities i) to iii) gains higher priority, especially in such an energy intensive industry. The specific energy consumption for certain upstream minerals industry operations in Canada is reported to be as follows: underground mining: 99.5 kWh/tonne mined; surface mining: 11.7 kWh/tonne mined; base metal processing: 81.4 kWh/tonne milled; gold processing: 99.6 kWh/tonne milled. Around 508 kWh/tonne (slag) of heat is reported to be available in cooling slag from 1500°C to 25°C; an amount that is simply indicative of the energy intensity of downstream smelting and refining operations. Low carbon, energy saving technology options that are available to mining industry companies lead to projects with return rates that must compete alongside other capital intensive projects considered by mining company boards. Energy projects frequently involve longer payback periods and lower rates of return than those of competing bids for capital, such as those for development of new mineral properties. For energy services companies (ESCOs) that specialize in the financing, construction, and the efficient operation and maintenance of energy projects, the same returns and payback periods may be considered acceptable or even attractive. For the ESCO, the key commercial risk mitigating factor is a securing a long term contract for the supply of energy.

Slurry pipelines are used in a number of countries to convey processed ore mixed with water over long distances from remote mine sites to ports or plants for further processing. In Egypt and Sudan, numerous mineral resources are scattered in remote areas. Through the years, Egyptian geologists have identified 268 sites for metallic ores and 386 sites for industrial nonmetallic minerals. A large portion of these sites are in the Eastern Desert in an area called the Nubian Shield. Similar sites are found in the Sudan where mining contributes to less than 1 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP). There are three important components of infrastructure needed to develop these resources ? power, water and transportation. While Egypt is able to satisfy 70 percent of its needs in iron ore from the Gadideh Mine in the Western Desert, it needs to expand its other resources to reduce imports heavily sedimented. Dredging of these sediments and transporting them by slurry pipelines would enhance an industry of bricks or agricultural development based on tailings technology often used in mining. This article explores the potential for slurry technology for opening new mines in the desert or recuperating the sediments of the Nile. The technology by itself would be new to both countries and would benefit from collaboration, particularly to de-silt the Nasser-Nubia Lake.

Underground coal mining is traditionally hazardous. Although many danger-prone human activities are now performed by mechanized equipment, this mechanization has itself brought new dangers to the underground mining industry, and the loss of life and limb has caused increased concern for mine safety. The 1969 Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act has precipitated a great deal of safety-related research on the part of the Government, industry, and private agencies. Much of this safety research has been focused on the new and varied man-machine interfaces caused by increased mechanization. Recent projects in this area have dealt with standardized controls, emergency shutdown capabilities (panic bars, strike plates, self-centering controls, "dead man" controls), and machine operator protective devices (fully enclosed cabs, canopies, side rails). There was a need for integration of the findings of current and past projects to move rapidly toward the smooth, orderly implementation of standardized operator work station designs for underground mining equipment.

Certain roof shales in coal mines deteriorate upon exposure to the atmosphere, causing difficulties in the mining operations and adding to the cost. This report presents the results of both field investigations, in a West Virginia mine, and laboratory studies on the effects of atmospheric moisture on roof shales. Based on these observations a conceptual procedure is presented on how shale deterioration might be predicted during exploration, and guidelines are given as to how air tempering or conditioning chambers may be designed to reduce moisture effects. Recommendations for further studies are included. An annotated bibliography of the literature constitutes the second volume.

"Abstract Contaminated land remediation using soil mix technology (SMT) is a relatively recent development which has been shown to be a cost effective and versatile system with numerous environmental advantages over other remediation techniques. The added complexities and variability associated with contaminated sites has escalated the need for field trials, field monitoring and specific QC measures to be undertaken for this setting and was the rationale behind project SMiRT (Soil Mix Remediation Technology). The main aim of project SMiRT was field validation, testing and assessment to provide stakeholder confidence in SMT and increase its uptake for land remediation in the UK. The field trials involved the treatment of 800 m3 of soil, through applying six different remediation techniques with four different SMT systems and introducing over thirty binders and binder compositions with a range of installation methodologies. Various issues were faced during the installation process and which were addressed on site. This paper presents some aspects of early age field observations, field monitoring, in-situ testing, coring and laboratory testing of cored samples and highlights some lessons learnt, providing valuable information on the issues that need to be addressed for this application of SMT.IntroductionAlthough soil mix technology (SMT) was developed in the 1960s in Japan and Sweden for geotechnical applications, its potential in geo-environmental applications became evident more recently the 1980s in the US and in the 1990s in Europe, having since increased to provide a range of remediation systems (Al-Tabbaa and Evans, 2003; Al-Tabbaa et al., 2011). The most common applications to date have been (a) the construction of low permeability containment walls or cut-off walls to contain a contaminated site; (b) stabilisation/solidification (S/S) treatment, with cementitious binders, for physical and chemical encapsulation of contaminants in soils and (c) the installation of permeable reactive barriers (RPBs), which are permeable walls that intercept the groundwater flow and remove contaminants from it, by mixing special additives with the native soil. Contaminated land remediation using SMT is a cost effective and versatile approach with numerous technical and environmental advantages over other remediation techniques. These advantages include the use of simple and well established techniques and equipment, speedy implementation, applicability to sites of any size and to multiple contaminants, elimination of off-site disposal, low risk and low emissions. There is a lack of competing alternative technologies that offer the same level of versatility and economic, environmental and social benefits, under current environmental legislation constraints. In addition, most currently available contaminated land remediation techniques are only partially effective, and are relatively contaminant-specific. This makes SMT a promising and timely contender to lead the market place in offering a cost-effective, efficient and low risk solution to contaminated soil and groundwater remediation and has resulted in a range of recent innovations."

In Kansas, almost every oil well drilled into a limestone formation is treated with hydrochloric (muriatic) acid upon completion. This is done to increase the potential capacity of the well and thereby increase its "daily allowable" production (see p. 9 ), to shorten the time required to produce the recoverable oil, and to increase the quantity of oil recovered ultimately from the reservoir. The porosity and. permeability of limestone formations seldom are uniform throughout the proved area, consequently the production capacities of completed wells vary considerably. Acid treatment of wells tends to increase production capacity and to equalize potential capacity. The use of a suspended growth system of T. ferrooxidans attached in a film to individual particles of bentonite and operated as a sequencing batch reactor has been shown to be a practical way of oxidizing ferrous iron in acid mine drainage. This component followed by limestone neutralization is both a technically and economically feasible approach to the treatment of these wastewaters in comparison to existing and proposed methods. The advantages, in addition to less expense, are greater safety, acceptable treatment at a lower pH, lower solids buildup, less danger of overtreatment, and greater flexibility in operational characteristics. In this report data on the continuous bench scale operation of the system under a variety of conditions shows sustained levels of oxidation in excess of 9%. A cost analysis projects capital and operating costs of $80/1,000 m3 of wastewater.

Conventionally low carbon ferromanganese is manufactured globally by refining high carbon ferromanganese in liquid state. This process is an expensive and lengthy technique. Hence, the present work was undertaken with the objective of understanding the feasibility and kinetics of the solid state refining of ferromanganese. The process involved transformation of carbon rich carbides viz. Mn3C2, Mn7C3 into metal rich carbide i.e. Mn15C4, Mn23C6 by subjecting the alloy powder to a flowing stream of carbon dioxide. Effect of the process governing parameters such as time, temperature, particle size, pressure on the extent of decarburization was studied. Without any loss of manganese in the form of fumes or slag, it was observed that, there was substantial reduction, viz. 65 per cent in the total carbon content, by this technique. Subsequently, the process was investigated to find out the mechanism of carbon removal. Depending upon the temperature and the particle size, it was found that the rate controlling mechanism changes from chemical reaction control to product layer (ash) diffusion control. The activation energy for each of the aforesaid mechanism was computed. The values thus obtained substantiated the aforesaid mechanisms.

As in many other industries, such as construction and agriculture, overhead electric power lines are a serious hazard at mining and mining-related operations. Even when excluding injuries that occur during electrical maintenance work, over one fourth of electrical fatalities in the mining industry are due to accidental overhead line contacts, and for each fatality nearly two serious non-fatal injuries occur due to such contacts. In incidents involving high-reaching mobile equipment, many of the victims touched the equipment after the fact, unaware that the machine frame had become energized by the line contact. MSHA data for accidents involving overhead power line contacts in the mining industry between 1980 and 1997 reveal that in 57% of the cases personnel were unaware of the accidental line contact until after one or more workers touched the equipment or a hoisted load and were injured. The situation is similar in the construction industry, where according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) data at least 20% of such victims are unaware of the line contact. This suggests that a device that alerts workers when a power line has been contacted could help prevent many of these injuries. Such a device would not prevent power line contacts, yet if widely employed could yield a significant reduction in the number of resulting injuries. Researchers at the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory are attempting to develop such a device. The approach being investigated is based on measuring electric current flow to ground through a machine during a line contact. The specific technique being tested involves the diversion of some part of this current through a shunt cable mounted on board the machine, to provide a point at which to install a current sensor. Experiments thus far indicate that this approach is feasible. Ongoing research is better defining electric current flow through mobile equipment, refining techniques for measuring this current, and identifying factors that could limit the effectiveness of the proposed alarm.

1. This, the final report to the U. S. Bureau of Mines on the program with the subject title, presents the data obtained from June 29, 1973, to April 20, 1974. 2. Operating in the Illinois #6 coal seam, the effectiveness of foam opposed to water was compared in reducing respirable coal dust. A combination of 39 foam generators and 14 water sprays were used during the foam tests. Sixty one water sprays were operated during the water tests. Data from 24 shifts using foam and 21 shifts using water are presented. 3. Additional work on foam generator design should be undertaken to provide coverage to a wider area with foam. 4. The general attitude of those working on the foam program and with the miner at the face was positive. It is urged that the work be continued. 5. The minor respiratory irritations evidently caused by an aerosol effect of the surfactant should be investigated. 6. The statistical analysis of the tests will be made and reported by the U. S. Bureau of Mines.

This paper on the out-and-fill method of mining is one of a series on mining methods published by the United States Bureau of Mines. It has been compiled chiefly from recent publications of the bureau describing in detail mining methods and costs at various mines. Other sources of information were the technical press, the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, the Mines Haudbook, and company reports. References other than those mentioned in Table 1, which lists the mines entering into this discussion and gives general data regarding them, are given in the body of the paper. The authors wish to acknowledge the kind assistance of many operating officials, either through correspondence or in the course of numerous visits to their mines. DEFINITION OF CUT-AND-FILL STOPING The out-and-fill method of stoping is that method in which relatively small sections or slices are taken successively from the lower surface of a block of ground by open-stoping methods, the broken ore being removed and each section filled with waste material before the next is mined. This definition excludes shrinkage stoping, even with subsequent filling; it excludes square-set and fill methods; it excludes the Mitchell slice method, which may be classed as underhand square-setting; it excludes the systematic use of stull sets and filling, which is a variation of square-setting; it excludes any method involving the caving of the ore, walls, or overburden during the process of extraction, although caving may be allowed to take place when the waste fill is withdrawn for use in other stopes; and it excludes any open-stope method without filling. Through variations, which will be discussed later, the cut-and-fill method merges into shrinkage stoping, open stoping, or square-setting. The use of casual timber support, such as props, stulls, or timber cribs for holding up weak portions of the back does not constitute a change from cut-and-fill to square-set mining.

High grade ores were intersected in 1981 by a scout drill carried out by the Metal Mining Agency of Japan during a reconnaissance dril ling programme. The original aim of the hole was to explore a deep target where geophysical anczralies overlapped the abandoned old drifts (gravity- high, resistivity-low by airborne EM, and resistivity-low near the surface and high at depth by Schlumberger deep sounding). Subsequently, a follow-up drilling programm was commenced by the Sumitcrro Metal Mining Co Ltd, and all the 18 holes intersected high grade ores. The resources were then "guestimated" to contain ca.120 tonnes gold with an average grade of 80g/t Au between -40m and +120n a.s.l. The underground development was started in December 1982 and the first crosscut intersected the ore body at 100m level (a.s.l.) in July 1985.

"Separation of molybdenite from chalcopyrite is mainly achieved through flotation technique to raise their grades up to 25% to be extracted in smelters. However, molybdenite recovery and grade obtained from this process is not satisfactory in most cases due to the natural hydrophobicity of both minerals. The influence of conventional heat treatment on pure chalcopyrite and molybdenite minerals was investigated. X-ray diffraction, TG-DTA and XPS techniques were applied before and after heat treatment. The results showed phase changes for both minerals. Magnetic separation experiments of single and mixture of both minerals at several magnetic intensities were made. For single mineral experiments, 100% molybdenite recovery was obtained at all experimental conditions as non-magnetic fraction whereas ca. 100% chalcopyrite recovery was achieved under certain conditions. In case of 1:1 binary mixture, 87% and 83% molybdenum and copper recoveries, respectively, were obtained. The increase in chalcopyrite magnetic recovery is related to the formation of more magnetic phases as confirmed by characterization techniques.The objective of this study is to increase the magnetism of chalcopyrite to make its separation from molybdenite by magnetic separation possible and to understand the mechanism behind it. These results indicate that it may be possible to upgrade molybdenite ores using heat treatment followed by magnetic separation to the required grade by smelters which is difficult to attain by froth flotation and the other techniques."

Draglines are one of the largest land-based equipment moving across the earth. They typically ranging in size from2.5 to 6.5 kt (2,750 to 7,100 st). Their size, though, makes them difficult to maintain. Recently, G&S Engineering Services used an Enerpac synchronous hydraulic lifting system to lift a 3.2-t(3,500-st) dragline at the Curragh Mine in Queensland, Australia’s Bowen Basin.

"The extraction of mineral values from ore requires liberation followed by separation steps. Liberation is achieved by size reduction operations which are energy inefficient processes typically dominating the energy consumption in a mineral concentrator. As the grade of ore reserves declines, future viability of mineral operations will be determined by energy costs of comminution. The application of high power microwave energy to secondary crusher products has been suggested as a possible commercially viable thermal treatment method for reducing comminution energy and improving value mineral liberation. Recent studies have shown that microwave pre-treatment of coarse sphalerite ore particles (> 5mm) at specific microwave heating energies (1-3 kWh/t), induces microfractures and creates new crack surfaces. This suggests that subsequent crushing of these microwave treated particles could yield enhanced liberation. However, limited studies have been carried out investigating the mode of breakage and the extent of enhanced liberation in that case. The objective of this study is to develop numerical methods for quantifying the extent of enhanced liberation and mode of breakage in crushed microwave treated and untreated particles. Sphalerite ore particles representing small (-5+4.75) mm, medium (-16+9.5) mm, and large (-25+19) mm HPGR and cone crushed particles were microwave treated at specific energies between 1-3 kWh/t. Cracks in the ore particles before and after microwave treatment were analysed with QEMSCAN and numerical models of the measured particles (before and after microwave treatment) were developed in MATLAB. The propagation of random and non-random cracks was investigated by simulating comminution of the modelled treated and untreated particles. Results of this study demonstrate that the breakage mechanism and the liberation of valuable minerals from gangue in microwave treated and untreated particles is significantly different. This study contributes to the development of numerical tools to quantify crack propagation in heterogeneous ore particles."

It is said by some that the occurrence of a deposit of sulphide of antimony in Southwestern Arkansas has been known for fifteen or twenty years. Whether or not such is the case I am not prepared to say, but I am not able to find any record of such a discovery, or any analysis of antimony ore obtained from that section, published at so early a period. The present discoveries, that seem to be attracting some attention, date back to the winter of 1873-74. At that time a vein of ore was found by Mr. Robert Wolf, in honor of whom the vein was named, and still is called, "the Wolf lode." At the time of the discovery the ore was unknown to the prospector, and its composition was not thoroughly understood in that locality until samples were sent to several analytical chemists, who pronounced it sulphide of antimony—stibnite. Since the discovery of this ore there have been three mines opened, and a number of interesting minerals of the antimonial series have been found. I have had an unusually good opportunity to collect specimens from these mines; and it is owing to the constant inquiry concerning the character of these ores that I have collected for publication the results of quite a number of analyses, sufficient I trust to clearly point out their composition. This is one of the few localities in the United States where antimony ore is found in workable quantities ; I say workable quantities, because two different shipments of ore have been made to English reduction works, and in both cases excellent returns were made. The discovery of these deposits will, it is hoped, give rise to a prosperous and remunerative industry at no distant day, and when fully developed they may yield ore in sufficient quantity to supply the regulus for the home demand, thus adding wealth not only to those interested, but also to the State of Arkansas. The three mines are situated in the northern part of Sevier County, and may be reached by the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway to Fulton, thence by wagon-road to Columbus, Nashville, Centre Point, and to the mines. "BACKGROUNDLake Hamilton in Hot Springs, AR was created in 1932 when the Arkansas Power and Light Co. completed Carpenter Dam on the Ouachita River to generate electricity. Today, the 7,200-acre (2,914 hectares) impoundment is one of Arkansas’s most popular recreational and residential lakes.U.S. 70 crosses Lake Hamilton by means of a seven-span bridge featuring nine steel girders per span. Constructed between 1982 and 1984, the 1,410-foot long (430m) bridge carries four lanes of traffi c across the lake. The bridge is supported by six intermediate reinforced concrete piers composed of hammer heads, stems, footings and seals, which sit on the underlying rock. (See Figure 1). The bridge rises to a maximum of 33 feet (10m) above the surface of the lake and the footings and seals extend a maximum of 29.5 feet (9m) below the surface of the lake. The seals are situated on hard, fractured sandstone and shale. Routine underwater inspections in 1993 revealed large cracks in the lean seal concrete and reflective cracks in the reinforced concrete footings. Infrastructure Engineers, Inc., The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department’s (AHTD) design consultant, then conducted an in-depth underwater inspection of the pier foundations. The investigation included cross-hole sonic logging, singlehole sonic logging, visual examination and strength testing of core samples, and petrographic analysis.The investigation revealed extensive cracking and low-strength concrete within the seals of all intermediate pier foundations. Many voids within the seal concrete had become filled with silt. There was evidence of continued seal deterioration between underwater inspections.AHTD and its engineers considered three rehabilitation solutions in the preliminary engineering stage: micropiles, a cofferdam supported concrete jacket, or a pile supported concrete jacket. The three alternatives were estimated to cost $1,250,000; $4,320,000; and $3,030,000 respectively. All three options would transfer the loads from the pier footing directly to the rock below, bypassing the seal concrete."
