The stripping of iron-laden solvent with hydrochloric acid in the iron-removal step of the clay-hydrochloric acid process for the extraction of alumina from calcined kaolinitic clay results in a loaded ferric chloride stripping liquor. Treatment of this stripping liquor at boiling with calcined kaolin to form insoluble Fe203(s) and a dilute A1C13 solution was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to characterize process problems and to aid in sizing of solids-liquid separation equipment. Variables identified as important in the chemical reaction were calcined kaolin particle size, ratio of calcined kaolin to FeC13, and reaction time. These parameters were tested for significance and their interactions investigated. Fine calcined kaolin (-65 mesh) at a greater than 1:1 mole ratio of contained acid-soluble A1203 to Fe203 equivalent of the FeC13 in the stripping liquor required less reaction time than coarser (-16 mesh) material. Solids-liquid separation of the reacted slurries by both settling and filtration requires flocculation.

This report presents a Bureau of Mines study on the cost of mine permitting and compliance with environmental regulations in Alaska. It discusses permitting requirements and procedures for placer and lode mines. Placer miners must comply with recently established (1988) water quality regulations and effluent treatment requirements. To estimate the impact differing treatment options (no recycle, 100% recycling, and flocculation) have on a placer mine's rate of return, three models (1,500, 1,000, and 500 yd3/d) were simulated. Rates of return for these models show a marked decrease as effluent treatment is increased. The incremental increase in operating cost from one treatment option to the next is relatively small; however the opportunity cost of lost production if' significant and accounts for the decreasing rate of return with increased effluent treatment. Lode mines face greater costs for permitting and compliance than similarly sized placer mines as a result of the impact of the operation. Direct permitting costs for lode mines range from 2 to 6% of total project cost, with 4% the most common figure cited by industry. Total costs for permitting and compliance are approximately double those for permitting. Indirect costs associated with compliance include mitigation, monitoring, and reclamation.

The Bureau has published much data on sulfur (4, 15, 23)3, most of it dealing with national or international aspects of the sulfur industry. Little information, however, is available on sulfur marketing in specific States or areas, Therefore, the Bureau has conducted a survey of the resources, production, consumption, and economic future of the sulfur and sulfuric acid industry in States of the Central and Southern Rocky Mountain area - Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico - and in the Northern Plains States - North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska, even though these States do not represent an economic or marketing unit. The purpose of this survey is to review the demand for sulfur and primary sulfur compounds that draws upon the natural resources of the region, to discover opportunities for better use of these resources, and also to analyze and evaluate the patterns of consumption, sources of supply, and other factors that affect the demand for these mineral products. While this survey stresses the economic and marketing phases of the industry, a complementary report (32) emphasizes the resources of sulfur in Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona.

The planning of experiments and the importance of statistical interpretation of the results have been recognized for years by scientists and engineers. The Factorial Design of experiments is among the various methods used for this purpose and is being widely applied in all branches of research and production. The basic principles of this tool have been described in detail (1, 2, 3, 4) and several examples of its application in various fields have been published (5). In recent years the mineral industry has also used Factorial Design to improve the efficiency of research, testwork and plant operation (6, 7, 8, 9). This method permits for a qualitative determination of the influence of the variables studied in a process and also a qualitative measure of the interaction of the variables. By graphic means or derivative methods, one may also establish the optimum conditions of the process (ibid 7, 8, 9). It is desirable, however, to develop mathematical methods to evaluate quantitatively these effects and restrict the optimization to the practical limitations of the variables. It is also convenient to adopt a notation system to generalize the Factorial Design.

A variety of commercial detonators (fuse type and electric instantaneous and delay types) were subjected to impact and thermal stimuli to determine initiation stimulus levels and the dominant parameters in resistance to initiation. In the impact trials the detonators were impacted along their length to find the most sensitive region; threshold initiation limits obtained for these regions ranged from 3.47 to 20.82 joules (2.6 to 15.4 ft-lb). The friction sensitivity of the explosive component was an important parameter in determining sensitivity; various construction features of nonexplosive components played a role as well. In the thermal sensitivity trials, the detonators were heated from ambient to 100° C at an average rate of about 1.0° C/min, and thereafter at 0.5° C/min until they exploded; the explosion temperatures observed ranged from 121° to 188° C. These temperatures correlated quite well with the reaction temperatures of certain characteristic explosive components used by different manufacturers. The data also indicated an effect of confinement on explosion temperatures of detonators.

The effect of the Fe3+ lFe2+ redox couple on the chemical and biological dissolution of chalcopyrite was studied. All the tests were carried out in stirred flasks with 100 mL of a ferric/ferrous sulphate solution, in the absence or in the presence of bacteria (iron- or sulphur-oxidizing) and at low (35 DC) and high (68DC) temperature. The initial redox potential was controlled between 300 and 600 m V Ag/ AgCI and silver was used as chemical catalyst. The results showed that the oxidizing action of ferric ion on the chalcopyrite was controlled, in all cases, by nucleation and precipitation of jarosites on unreacted particles. The tendency of Fe3+lFe2+ solutions towards equilibrium favours the activities of both ions to be equal. Consequently, the dissolution rate was faster at relatively low redox potentials (between 400 and 500 mY) than at high values (600 mY). In this sense, the presence of ferrous ion in the system is a key factor to control hydrolysis and precipitation of ferric ion. Unlike jarosite, the elemental sulphur produced during dissolution of chalcopyrite was porous and did not act as a diffusion barrier.

"Triton Mining Corporation acquired the rights to Mina El Limon in Nicaragua in 1993 by international bid. The bid included the gold operations at Limon and an exploration concession of approximately 4000 km2. Triton assumed control of operations and exploration in May 1994.The Limon mine is located in west-central Nicaragua, approximately 100 kilometers northwest of Managua. The climate is tropical, characterized by a wet season from May through October, and a dry season November through April. Gold at Limon is associated with both banded quartz and silicified breccia veins in Tertiary volcanic rocks, belonging to the lower Coyol Group. Mining is from two open pits and one mechanized underground operation. A second underground mine is currently under development for production during 1997.This paper describes the expansion of the milling facility at El Limon from a nominal capacity of 400 tonnes/day, producing approximately 20,000 ounces of gold annually, to the existing 900 tonne per day mill operation. Engineering of the new mill facility was initiated in September 1994 and construction was completed a year later."

IN GATHERING material for this chapter on Yerington and the one to follow on Silver Bell, the A.S.& R. project near Tucson, Arizona, I was fascinated at the way the two stories paralleled each other. For example, here are a few instances: (1) The first copper mining in the Yerington district of Nevada was in the late 1860's; the first in the Silver Bell area in 1873. (2) Each district was served by a branch railroad about 25 miles long from a main line of the Southern Pacific (by quizzical coincidence); and, in each instance, the railroad was later abandoned and torn up. (3) Each district had a sizable blast-furnace smelter ten or fifteen miles from the principal mines, and in each instance the smelter was later dismantled for junk. (4) Up to 1954, the Yerington district was credited with a production of 100,000,000 lb of copper; the Silver Bell district with 80,000,000 lb. (5) In each district the entire production had come from deposits other than the low-grade ore bodies now being exploited. (6) In each instance, existence of the low-grade deposits of the Porphyry type was recognized in the period circa1910-1914 and a substantial amount of exploratory drilling had been done, on one deposit at Yerington and on two at Silver Bell. Gold mineralisation in the gabbro sills is mainly stratabound to quartz- and Fe-rich, granophyric-textured units and is sited in undeformed, brittle quartz vein sets, which form pipe-like orebodies. Hydrothermal wallrock alteration consists of hornblende-plagioclase-calcite-quartz with minor biotite, garnet and chlorite and with arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite as the dominant sulphides. Geothermobarometric data suggest that gold was deposited at around 520 degrees C at 2.8-3.8 bar. Mineralisation is thought to have occurred during amphibolite-facies metamorphism. Fluid inclusion and isotope data indicate that gold mineralisation was the result of deposition from a low-salinity H2O-CO2-CH4 fluid of either metamorphic or magmatic origin. Although the Three Mile Hill deposit differs from others in the area in its wallrock-alteration assemblages, peak-metamorphic timing of gold deposition and distinct geochemical associations it forms a brittle stratabound ore body which suggests structural and gold-depositional mechanisms in common with those of the other gabbro-hosted gold deposits

This bibliography was compiled by the Bureau of Mines as part of an investigation into the possible utilization of low-temperature coal-tar bases. The bibliography consists of literature and patent references from about 1945 to 1961 and is divided into the following headings: Analysis and Composition; Production, Synthesis, Reactions, and Utilization; and Separation, Purification, and Properties. Although over 1,000 references are included, no attempt was made to insure a comprehensive survey. The literature and patent references are arranged alphabetically by author or patentee. When several publications have the same author they are listed in reverse order of age, with the newest first. An author index is included because secondary authors are not cross-indexed. In almost every instance, the entry is accompanied by a Chemical Abstracts reference for those interested in locating an abstract of the original paper.

The production of portland cement requires that four basic elements -- calcium, silica, alumina and iron -- be ground to a fine powder, homogenized, and fed to the pyroprocessing unit, where it is burned to a cement clinker. The raw material must either be ground wet in a slurry form or dried and ground to a dry powder, with a fineness of approximately 85% passing the 200 M screen. According to the Portland Association's Plant Information Summary, approximately 38% of the U.S. capacity is ground wet and 62% ground dry. The Wyoming bentonite industry finished 2005 with strong growth. For most of the markets, demand exceeded supply. The industry continues to be heartened by the strength of its longtime markets, oilfield and iron ore pelletizing markets. But overall, all of the major markets enjoyed good to excellent commercial conditions. Growth at the macroscale was fueled by the continued strong domestic economy, by the exchange rate of the U.S. dollar in global markets and by strong worldwide global demand. As result, two new greenfield operations are in the early stage of development in the Wyoming region for the first time in more than two decades.

The kinetics of leaching galena with ferric chloride and ferric nitrate have been examined as a function of ferric concentration, salt concentration, temperature and particle size. Diffusivity of ferric complex ions was also established as a function of ferric chloride concentration and temperature. In the presence of 3 M NaCl, leaching rate is controlled by product layer diffusion when ferric chloride is added as oxidant. With NaCl concentrations less than 3 mole/liter rate decreases with decreased NaCl concentration, and, thus, rate is apparently not controlled by product layer diffusion. It is suggested that rate is controlled by lead chloride solubility at the reaction interface under these conditions. When ferric nitrate is added as oxidant, leaching rate is limited by chemical reaction control. An electrochemical model is presented. Activation energies are 8.1 and 11.3 kcal/mol in the ferric chloride and ferric nitrate systems, respectively.

This Bureau of Mines report evaluates the performance of commercially available portable instrumentation for the detection of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxygen, and methane at conditions simulating an industrial work atmosphere. Portable instrumentation included in the study was gas-detection tubes (length-of-stain and color intensity), catalytic detector, liquid absorption detectors, paramagnetic oxygen detector, galvanic detector, and pelement or hot-wire methane detectors. Evaluation of the instruments was in atmospheres with 50 and 80 percent relative humidities at 75° F and containing test gas concentrations of 0.1, 0.25, 0.50, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 times the thresh-old limit value. Correlation of the results from the portable gao analyzer with measurement from the standard instruments was made by calculating and plotting an estimated line of regression, prediction, and confidence limits and the correlation coefficient for each detector system. Relative humidity in the 50-to 80-percent range did not appear to contribute to instrumental uncertainties in either performance or operation. Considerable deviation in detection precision between the portable gas-detection systems and the standard systems was established, especially at the lower gas concentration levels. The main difference or inconsistency in toxic gas concentrations determined with length-of-stain tubes resulted from the observer's interpretation of the results rather than difference in the tubes themselves.

Neste trabalho foi estudado o efeito da variação da densidade de corrente, temperatura e pH do banho eletrolítico na eletrodeposição da liga Ni-Mo-P utilizando citrato de sódio como agente complexante em função do comportamento anticorrosivo da mesma, da composição química e morfologia dos revestimentos. A caracterização das camadas foi feita por microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e energia dispersiva de raios-X (EDX). Os ensaios de corrosão foram realizados à temperatura ambiente em NaCl 0,1 M por polarização potenciodiâmica linear (PPL). Como ferramenta de otimização foi utilizado um planejamento fatorial completo 23 associado a metodologia da superfície de resposta (MSR). As propriedades de corrosão e composição química dos revestimentos de Ni-Mo-P obtidos mostraram ser dependentes da densidade de corrente, temperatura e pH do banho eletrolítico. A ausência de trincas foi verificada para revesimentos com baixo conteúdo de molibdênio e mostrou ser necessário para obtenção de eletrodepósitos com boas propriedades de resistência à corrosão. Os resultados revelaram que o revestimento que apresentou melhor resistência à corrosão foi obtido em densidade de corrente 100 mA cm-2, temperatura de 40°C e pH 9,0 com composição de 87 wt.% Ni, 6 wt.% Mo e 7 wt.% P e sua superfice exibiu morfologia nodular.

In this paper, the technology of producing fluxed pellets by using hydrated lime as binder instead of bentonite was carried out. Green balls with 0.8% bentonite and others with 2% hydrated lime were obtained under the same conditions of 1.5% coke, 1.45 basicity and balling at 8.5% moisture for 13 min in disc pelletizer. The properties of two types green balls were as follows: drop numbers of 4.8 to 5.0 times/0.5m, compressive strength of 19.7 to 24.2 N/pellet and thermal shock temperature of 280 to 385?, respectively. Comparing with bentonite as binder, the compressive strength of fired pellets with hydrated lime is elevated by 13.8% and climbs up to 3113 N/pellet under the following conditions: preheating at 1050? for 10 min and firing at 1300? for 15 min. The hydrated lime also improves the metallurgical performance of fired pellets. The reduction index was enhanced from 68.6% to 70.6%, RDI+3.15 increased from 90.1% to 98.8% and reduction swelling index dropped from 22.4% to 7.4%, respectively. Therefore, hydrated lime can not only replace bentonite as binder to enhance the firing behaviors of green balls, but also effectively improve the metallurgical performance of fluxed pellets which can be used as high quality feed for blast furnace.

Detailed landform designs were completed for six (integrated) iron ore waste rock dumps at a Western Australian iron ore mine site to meet closure objectives and to optimise material movements for closure. The designs were based on specific physical and geochemical properties of waste material and the design was undertaken to enhance long-term stability of the dumps and optimise material movements, and therefore minimise closure cost. Construction of the re-shaped waste rock dumps have been completed. Following construction, surface material characteristics were found to deviate from those used in the design assessment. Materials present at surface following re-shaping were generally finer textured than those sampled for modelling. It is anticipated that the embankment slopes may experience increased rates of surface erosion compared to the rates predicted from modelling and used in design. The finer textured material is thought to be generated from exposing finer material that has migrated into the coarser matrix over time or that was not present in the sampled top surface of the landforms. This is due to armouring processes over time and this phenomenon is likely to recur following further wet seasons. The majority of the waste materials present in the waste rock dumps were subgrade banded iron formations (BIF) and chert, which are generally competent and geochemically inert. Some waste material was known to have an elevated risk of erosion but present in relatively small quantities. The presence of a large number of dolerite dyke swarms indicates appreciable volumes of dolerite were produced as waste from the pits. This material has an elevated risk of being highly erodible/dispersive. Clays and shales are also likely to be present in the dumps and are considered to be less competent material (relative to the BIF/chert). The objective of flotation models is to predict the recovery rate of minerals from a flotation cell. In this paper a CFD?based flotation models is presented. The model uses first order rate equation, and the collision frequency is estimated using Abrahamson [1] model with input from CFD two-phase simulations. Spatial distributions of dissipation rate and air volume fraction (also called void fraction) are determined by the two-phase hydrodynamic simulations. Knowing these parameters throughout the machine is essential in understanding the effectiveness of different components (rotor, stator or disperser, jets) on the flotation efficiency. Not only the average pulp recovery rate can be estimated but also the regions of high/low recovery rate can be identified. The CFD-based flotation model presented here can be used to determine the dependence of recovery rate constant at any locality within the pulp on particle diameter, particle specific gravity, contact angle, and surface tension.
