The efficiencies of plant scale comminution processes are often evaluated by various indices that are calculated and/or measured somewhat independent of the performance of any associated downstream froth flotation processes. In order to compare some specific comminution factors such as energy utilization, media consumption, equipment utilization time, etc. comparisons of comminution efficiency independent of flotation behavior are appropriate. However, as more and more detailed plant level information is gathered on the joint and highly interactive nature of comminution and froth flotation, it is becoming increasingly obvious that knowing and using simple efficiency indices are not enough. What is needed are more performance related measures of the efficiencies of the combined size reduction -froth flotation system for effective plant level economic optimization to occur. The purpose of this paper is to present some examples of important interactions that influence the joint efficiencies of size reduction and froth flotation processes.

In March 2010 the Boral Linwood Quarry, Adelaide South Australia, implemented the blasting contractors Monte Carlo Blast Vibration Model as part of their blast design process. The Linwood Quarry was developing an area where blasting activities were marginally complying with the statutory vibration limits. Compliance to the statutory limits was only being achieved through the use of small blasts (less than 15 000 T (14 763 ton)) at a high cost to the quarry.

The purpose of this work was to investigate the hafnium-carbon phase diagram. Alloys used to study this system were prepared from high-purity components by both consumable-and nonconsumable-electrode arc melting. Data for the diagram were obtained on the alloys by metallography, optical pyrometry, thermal analysis, heat treatment, and X-ray diffraction. The data indicate that a carbide compound occurs over considerable range of composition, and that one of each of the following types of reactions occurs in the hafnium-carbon system: Peritectoid, peritectic, and eutectic. The maximum melting temperature of hafnium carbide is 3,840° C at 49 to 50 atomic percent carbon, and the composition range of hafnium carbide at temperatures of 2,150° to 2,380° C is from 37.0 to 48.5 atomic percent carbon. The hafnium a-S transformation temperature is raised on alloying with carbon from 1,750° to 1,890° C, where a peritectoid reaction isotherm occurs. Alloying hafnium with carbon increases the hafnium melting temperature from 2,190° to 2,250° C, at which temperature a peritectic reaction occurs. Hafnium carbide and carbon react at 3,055° C to form a eutectic of 68.3 atomic percent carbon.

In Australia, responsibility for abandoned mines can be unclear. With a few exceptions, state and territory governments have become responsible for abandoned mines on Crown land and private landholders are responsible for abandoned mines on freehold land. Abandoned mines pose risks and opportunities across the full suite of sustainability themes (environmental, human health and safety, socio-economic and community development) after mining ceases.Across Australia, there are more than 50 000 abandoned mines recorded, ranging in size from individual shafts to large polluting open cut mines. Addressing the safety and environmental impacts of these sites, as well as the socio-economic development opportunities of significant rehabilitation projects, requires the implementation of effective policies and programs. Qualitatively defined graded scales or ‘rubrics’ have been used for many years in student assessment and increasingly in the performance assessment of other sectors (Davidson, 2005). While risk-based maturity models have been used for safety prioritisation (Westrum, 1993; Hudson, 2007; DRET, 2008; Hancock, 2010) and evaluation of organisational development (Esteves et al, 2010), this paper is the first to adapt maturity models for the evaluation of abandoned mine rehabilitation programs in Australia.In this paper, we used indicators based on the national policy for abandoned mines to assess the maturity of abandoned mine programs. Fourteen elements of maturity were identified (Unger et al, 2012) under the five chapters of the national policy for abandoned mines (MCMPR and MCA, 2010). Jurisdictions were then evaluated and ranked on their maturity on the basis of information that was web-accessible. Information transparency of abandoned mines policies and programs is in itself one element of the maturity chart. Each jurisdiction in Australia was compared with one another and with a Canadian jurisdiction; the British Columbia (BC) Crown Contaminated Sites Program (CCSP), which represents leading practice (Unger, 2009; Unger et al, 2012).Our research found that in some jurisdictions in Australia there is little or no information on abandoned mine programs or individual abandoned mine sites on government websites, while other jurisdictions provided very detailed program information on planning, funding and implementation. Each jurisdiction in Australia, for which web-based information was available, had some elements where they were more mature than other Australian jurisdictions. For some elements, maturity ranked equivalent to the BC CCSP, but most Australian jurisdictions were less mature. There was only one element where a single Australian jurisdiction ranked higher than the BC program in maturity. Legacy mine policies, programs, priorities and funding information via departmental websites are easier to find in some jurisdictions, indicating progression toward greater transparency and more mature programs. A systematic approach to monitoring and evaluating abandoned mines programs is essential for accountability as it can demonstrate liability reduction over time and continual improvement. The nickel-bearing laterite deposits in the Pine Flat and Diamond Flat areas, Del Norte County, Calif., were investigated by the Bureau of Mines to determine the extent and nickel content of the two deposits and the amenability of the ores to metallurgical treatment. The work was based on drill-hole sampling and metallurgical tests in which attrition scrubbing and sizing, reduction roasting, and magnetic separation were used. Results of the sampling indicated that the deposits are comparatively small and are marginal or submarginal in grade. Metallurgical tests showed that no separation of cobalt from nickel and iron was made by sizing; however, a large portion of the chromium was separated. Reduction roasting and magnetic separation did result in upgrading the iron, nickel, and cobalt, and the simultaneous rejection of chromium.

"Photographic, video, laser, hot film and conductivity methods are used in the experimental study of gas-liquid flows. A discussion of their capabilities and limitations are given in this paper illustrating the wide range of phenomena that can be studied. Most of these methods are limited to physical models at room temperature with transparent fluids, although they can be extended for use with opaque and hot fluids. A number of these techniques have been used by the GKW CRC in studies on industrial plants and their usage is increasing although a number of technical difficulties still need to be overcome. An in-depth discussion of the laser doppler anemometry (LDA) and particle image velocimetry (PIV) methods is given with experimental results on the flow field of an air plume in water based on advanced development of the techniques and studies carried out at the GKW CRC. The LDA method provides high resolution data on the velocity profiles, while the PIV method provides an overall view of the complex flow structure occurring at the gas-liquid regions. These two methods complement each other in providing experimental data for validating numerical models and exploring the complexities of multi phase flows.IntroductionThe injection of gases into melts is an important operation in the metallurgical industry. It is used in converters, anode furnaces, blast furnaces, ladles, bath smelters, zinc fumers and many other smelting processes. In many of these processes, the gas is injected into a molten bath resulting in the formation of bubbles that promote reaction, mixing, alloying and heat transfer. The study of gas-liquid systems presents enormous challenges to the researcher due to the complexity of the mathematical and physical modelling which require innovative numerical and experimental skills."

El presente trabajo plantea dos alternativas para afrontar la crisis minera que se desarrolla en la mina Raura del Perú. La primera, estriba en mantener el ritmo de producción e incrementar la ley de cabeza. Mientras que la segunda, refiere el cierre total de la minería convencional para enfocarse a la franja mesomática tipo skarn de la sección Catuva, utilizando métodos altamente mecanizados que incrementan la producción paulatinamente. En este sentido, se optó por la segunda alternativa puesto que el potencial minero en Raura proyecta a mayores niveles de producción y las reservas actuales se corresponden con la amortización de la deuda. Asi también se describe las características geológicas y locales del distrito minera de Raura, producción histórica, potencial minero, reservas económicas y se analiza los métodos de minado de tajo abierto y mina subterránea como los resultados de dicha valuación económica.

In the framework of the optimization of Teniente Converter operation the new system of automatic flux feeding through gar-gun was implemented in the Potrerillos Smelter, Codelco Chile, Salvador Division. The control algoritm based on simple iron and silica balance adjusted by empirical coefficients was incorporated in the logical programmer. The programmer works in real time gathering information from the plant instrumentation events and introduced chemical assays of concentrate, slag and flux. Through the auto-tuning of the automatic operation the criterions of optimal flux dosage were determined. Four month of operation of the automatic flux feeding system demonstrated the stabilization of magnetite content in the slag in the narrow range from 18 to 20% and the decrease of flux consumption, corresponding to annual savings US$ 340,000. Additionally, the automatic system helps operators in the control room in fast determination of optimal fluxing and avoid the errors in flux dosage affecting the slag quality and its impact on refractory wear.

This report describes the preparation of tritium-labeled organic compounds to be used by the Federal Bureau of Mines in studying the role of certain gasoline constituents in gum-forming mechanisms. The gasoline constituents that have been investigated boil within a range of approximately 90 to 230° C. and can be classified as paraffins. naphthenes, olefins, diolefins, monocyclic aromatics, polycyclic aromatics, and organic sulfur, nitrogen,: and oxygen compounds. The technique of Wilzbach has been applied to more than 50 samples. Purification techniques have been developed that accomplish rapid and effective purification as well as removal of labile tritium in a one-step operation. Data are presented to show the rate of exchange between tritium and hydrogen that can be expected for a variety of compounds common to a full-boiling-range gasoline. These values should be useful to other investigators using tracer programs involving tritium labeled compounds.

This paper illustrates the application of geostatistics to a roll front type uranium deposit located in Wyoming. The steps involved in calculation of experimental variograms, variogram modeling and verification of the resulting models are described in detail. The resulting spherical variogram models for grade thickness and thickness show strong geometrical anisotropies. The major axis of anisotropy for both variables is approximately parallel to the axis of the roll front and the minor axis perpendicular to the roll. This model confirms the technique of drilling "fences" across the roll front, where the drilling is much closer together than the fences along the roll.

The Pima mine, 39,000 ton per day copper mine, is located 17 miles south of Tucson, Arizona. The mine is in a sequence of Paelozoic and Mesozoic sediments striking east-northeast and dipping southeasterly intruded by a Tertiary quartz monzonite porphyry. The Paleozoic Permian(?) dolo¬mites, limestones, and sandstones have been altered to talc-silicate skarn, marble and quartzite. The overlying Mesozoic Triassic(?) clastic sediments have undergone some recrystallization and hydro¬thermal alteration. The clastic metasediments are divided into three distinct lithologic units, lithic arenite, arkose, and inter¬bedded and overlying black argillite. Three types of hydrothermal alteration in the clastic rocks are propylitic alteration (epidote, chlorite and quartz, with or without sericite), quartz-sericite alteration, and potassic alteration (K-feldspar and quartz, with or without sericite and chlorite). The porphyry has undergone potassic alteration. Dominant structures are an east-west post mineral fault in the western part of the pit, and strong low angle faulting and shearing which truncates the ore body at depth. Two joint sets, one parallel to bedding and the other at right angles to bedding are prominent in the mine. Faulting is in two dominant directions, one striking northwest, dipping northeast and the other striking northeast, dipping northwest. Mineralization is predominantly disseminated pyrite and chalcopyrite, and molybdenite-quartz veinlets. There are lens important amounts of magnetite, hematite, sphalerite, galena, tennantite and bornite. Mineralization is believed to be both structurally and chemically controlled.

"Microwave-hydrothermal processing is a novel technique which combines the conventional hydrothermal processing with microwave field and we previously showed for the first time, that ceramic powders can be rapidly produced by this technique. This review paper deals with the synthesis of unary oxides such as Fe203, Ti02, Zr02, etc., binary oxides such as BaTiO3, SrTiO 3, PbTiO 3, SrZrO 3, KNbO3, etc., and ternary oxides such as NaTi2 (PO4)3 and pyrochlore phases of Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3, Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3 etc. and metal powders such as Cu, Ni, etc. below 195°C. This method can be adopted to the synthesis of a large variety of powders by the appropriate control of pH, Eh, temperature/pressure and concentration of chemical species. The main advantages of this method compared to conventional hydrothermal processing are (a) it increases the kinetics of reaction by one to two orders of magnitude, and (b) it can lead to novel phases especially those with layered structures.IntroductionConventional hydrothermal processing is a well-established synthesis technique which has been extensively used in the preparation of fine ceramic powders [1-5], large single crystals [6-8] and massive cement blocks [9]. Technologically important ceramic powders such as BaTiO 3, Al203 etc. made by the hydrothermal process are now commercially available. Although there are numerous methods for materials synthesis, hydrothermal method is truly a low temperature and environmentally benign process. For example, ZrSi04 (Zircon) which is extensively used in ceramic industry can be prepared hydrothermally at 150·C [10] compared to sol-gel or solid-state method [11,12] which require a temperature of about 1000·C. The hydrothermal method is environmentally benign because hydrothermal reactions are carried out in closed systems at low temperatures and the contents can be recovered and recycled after cooling to the ambient conditions. One of the disadvantages with any low temperature processing method is slow kinetics. For this reason we have combined the hydrothermal method with microwaves to enhance kinetics and we named this method as ""Microwave-hydrothermal"" processing [13- 16]. Although the combination of microwave and hydrothermal techniques has been used in the past few years to dissolve all kinds of inorganic (e.g. alumino silicate rocks) and organic materials rapidly for chemical analysis, we were the first to show its potential value for the synthesis of various ceramic powders [13-16]. In this paper, I show that this novel method is applicable to the synthesis of all unary, binary and multinary oxides by the appropriate control of pH, Eh, temperature, pressure and concentration of chemical species. In addition, this method is also found to be useful for the preparation of metal powders."

The Bureau of Mines conducted research on substitute brazing filler alloys with properties similar to those of silver filler alloys in an effort to conserve silver and reduce hazards from cadmium emissions. Experimental work was conducted first on the commercial silver brazing alloys BAg-I, BAg-la, BAg-2, and BAg-3 to establish criteria for evalu-ating the substitute alloys. Properties investigated included the wettability of copper, brass, and steel substrates, and the strength of joints made with the filler alloys. A series of experimental alloys containing 50 to 60 pct Cu, 20 to 28 pct Mn, and 17 to 30 pct Zn was prepared and evaluated, together with Cu-Mn-Zn alloys with 5 pct Pb or 2 pct Ni. Wetting properties and joint strengths were not as good as those for silver filler alloys, and the high application temperatures reduced the copper and brass base metal strengths. However, experimental alloys containing 70 pct Cu, 15 to 20 pct Mn, and 10 to 16 pct Sn had wetting and strength properties approaching those of the silver filler alloys. The application temperatures for these alloys were high-er than those for silver fillers, but not as high as those for the Cu-Mn-Zn alloys. With the Cu-Mn-Sn alloy fillers, copper alloy joint members are less deteriorated by recrystallization than when applying Cu-Mn-Zn alloys. The Cu-Mn-Sn system has potential for further devel-opment as a substitute brazing alloy system, particularly if the melting temperature can be reduced by the addition of other elements without decreasing the ductility and wetting.

The Kings Mountain area of North Carolina is the lithium pegmatite center of the U.S., if not of the whole world. We have two spodumene and by-product mineral producing companies, Lithium Corp. of America, and Foote Mineral Company. We also have Kings Mountain Mica and Kings Mountain Silica Companies producing mica. feldspar, quartz and clay from weathered pegmatites in that area. Figure 1 gives the location of the spodumene pegmatite area in North Carolina. The two spodumene producers mine typical pegmatite ore in open pits after removing amphibolite or mica schist overburden which is sold to aggregate producers. The ore reserves are discussed elsewhere in this session. They are in the order of plus 50 million tons but not unlimited. 1.2 The major minerals found and concentrated from the North Carolina spodumene pegmatite ores are tabulated on Table 1.

"This paper is the sequel to that on Developments in Sintering Efficiency delivered by Davies and Mitchell at the International Ore Dressing Congress, Stockholm, 1957. Attention is drawn to the fundamental concept of sintering as a heat transfer process, in which the ignition heat is continually transferred onward through the bed as a heat wave. By its passage, this heat initiates endothermic 'changes, such as carbonate decomposition, whose energy requirements are supplied by the combustion of the fuel contained in the bed.Ideally, the heat wave should be generated by the ignition hood followed by the pre-heating of the incoming air. The fuel content of the bed should be no more than the theoretical quantity needed to balance the endothermic changes. In practice, the heat wave is seriously short of energy and this is offset by excess fuel in the bed. As a result, sinter quality suffers, more return .fines are produced, and fuel is wasted, a loss of efficiency which could be avoided if the fundamentals of correct ignition were more widely appreciated.Sintering speed, otherwise heat wave velocity, is a function of the rate at which the incoming air acquires .heat from the cooling sinter and imparts it to the unburned feed below the combustion zone. It is thus a function of rate of air flow and so depends on bed permeability>. Ways of• improving and maintaining permeability at the maximum consistent with thorough sintering are discussed, particular reference being made to taconite concentrates. The possibilities of recrystallizing refractory ores into forms more amenable to physical concentration techniques by sintering are visualised, very little expenditure on heat energy being required when the process is operated near the ideal conditions."

The flotation performance of 2-(benzylthio)-acetohydroxamic acid (BTHA) to diaspore was first evaluated by micro-flotation tests. The adsorption mechanism was further investigated through adsorption experiments, molecular dynamics simulation, zeta potential and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results demonstrated that BTHA had a stronger ability to collect diaspore in comparison with another diaspore collector, benzohydroxamic acid (BHA), especially under the condition of weak alkalinity, the flotation recovery can reach 90%. The more negative interaction energy (ΔE) between BTHA and diaspore from molecular dynamics simulation results revealed that BTHA had an easier adsorption ablity onto diaspore than BHA, which matched with adsorption results. This report covers investigations of the Bureau of Mines for the period of June 15, 1952, to June 15, 1953, on a research project for the Materials Laboratory, Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio. The primary purpose of this investigation was to make high-purity chromium-base alloys having room-temperature ductility and high-temperature strength. The Nonferrous Metals Branch of the Bureau of Mines, Albany, Oreg., has, during the past 7 years, developed on a laboratory scale a hydrogen treatment method for making high-purity chromium that can be fabricated into thin sheet and wire. This material can be bent at room temperature. The object of this investigation was to use this material to develop improved chromium-rich alloys for high-temperature uses.

Microporous membranes have been used to create a very fine dispersion of bubbles which greatly enhances the mass transfer of electroactive species to the electrode. Using this system, it has been shown that it is possible to electrowin copper as a coherent planar deposit, at high current densities, from copper chloride solutions.

"THE ECSTALL CONCENTRATOR is situated adjacent to Highway 101 and the Ontario Northland Railroad, 15 miles east of Timmins, Ontario. Ore is delivered to the concentrator by rail from the mine, which is 17 miles northwest of the plant. Power and fuel are obtained from the hydro and natural gas lines which pass close to the plant site. Water is obtained from the Frederickhouse River, 6 miles east of the concentrator. The main concentrator building is a large structure 500 by 640 feet by 90 feet high and contains facilities for fine crushing, crushed ore storage, grinding, flotation, tin recovery, concentrate handling and reagent handling. Located in the same building are the machine shop, warehouse, metallurgical laboratory, pilot plant, men's change room, sample preparation area and an assay laboratory. The general concentrator layout is shown in Figure 47. Originally designed to handle 9,000 tons per day, the concentrator now treats 10,000 tons per day. Two different ore types are processed by selective flotation in three individual circuits to recover copper, lead and zinc concentrates. In 1973, another circuit was added to recover pyrite and tin concentrates from the combined zinc tailings of the three main circuits."
