The process metallurgy of many nickel laterite smelting operations is controlled largely by the physical chemistry of the slag system. Consequently, accurate phase diagram information and physicochemical property data are essential to interpret and predict the behaviour and optimisation of the overall process. The system (SiO2 - MgO - FeO) first described by Bowen et al. between 1914 and 1935 and the system (SiO2 - MgO - FeO - Fe2O3) determined by Muan and Osborne in 1956 are of particular relevance to the study of nickel laterite smelting slags as these systems form a reasonable approximation of many industrial slags. This paper will review the literature for these (and other relevant) phase systems. In addition data available from the ternary and (quasi)ternary phase diagrams will be compared with data obtained from industrial slags. The physico-chemical properties under consideration will include; melting and crystallisation behaviour (solidus and liquidus temperatures), viscosity - temperature relationships, heat flux considerations, electrical conductivity, surface and interfacial tension.

This guide was written to furnish the coal industry with a description of techniques, instruments, and clues on how to find abandoned oil and gas wells that have penetrated coal seams. The report includes specific information on searching techniques currently in use by several coal mining companies, gas-transmission companies, and waterflood operators, as well as information on State agencies responsible for the enforcement of laws and the preservation and distribution of data pertaining to the drilling, development, and abandonment of oil and gas wells. Comparative tests were performed with several commercial electronic metal detectors to determine the feasibility of using them to aid in the search for abandoned wells and to determine the instrument most suited for that particular use. The role of methane detectors to locate abandoned wells is described, including a case history. Tests were made to develop an efficient procedure to follow in systematically searching an area for metallic clues or hydrocarbon evidence to abandoned wells. The guide describes, in detail, a search sequence, including the collection of basic data, preparation of the selected area, and the physical search. Methods are given for evaluating the results.

"This paper reports on the design and simulation results of a silicon bulk-micromachined diaphragm-type piezoresistive pressure sensor capable of operating linearly over a wide dynamic range (0-1000 meters of water). The piezoresistor elements of the sensor are arranged in a wheat stone bridge configuration to achieve a higher output response. Simulation results (output voltage and sensitivity analysis) obtained using coupled MemPZR-MemMech module of the CoventorWare2003 Finite Element tool are presented. The effect of diaphragm size, diaphragm thickness and thickness of the piezos on output sensitivity were analyzed and optimized to get a linear response over the wide dynamic range.IntroductionThe physical and biological processes in the ocean are critically influenced by ocean parameters (pressure, salinity and temperature). Thus there is a need to develop inexpensive and reliable sensors to continuously measure large volumes of sea-space over long time spans. A key component in any such system will be a pressure/depth sensor. This sensor is routinely employed in marine applications such as wave and tide gauges, tsunami detection, platform leveling etc. More significantly, pressure measurement is needed for depth determination. Depth sensors are vital for remote operated vehicles (ROVs), profiling instruments and towed arrays.Several techniques have been routinely used in the past to measure pressure in the marine environment [1-3]. In general, the pressure sensor design is based on a flexible membrane as the spring element for the sensing pressure [4]. The deflection of the membrane, induced by the applied pressure, is converted into an electrical output through a component that is sensitive to diaphragm deflection (capacitive coupling) or associated stresses (piezoresistors, strain gauges). "This paper discusses the evaluation and application of a portable parked-vehicle tailpipe emissions measurement apparatus (EMA). The EMA consists of an exhaust dilution system and a portable instrument package. The EMA instantaneously dilutes and cools a sample of exhaust with compressed nitrogen or air at a known dilution ratio, thereby presenting it to instruments as it is presented to personnel in the surrounding environment. The operating principles and governing equations of the EMA are presented.A computational method is presented to determine the engine operating and performance parameters from the exhaust CO2 concentrations along with an assumed engine overall volumetric efficiency and brake specific fuel consumption. The parameters determined are fuel / air ratio, mass flow rates of fuel, air and exhaust emissions, and engine brake torque and horsepower. These calculated engine parameters are used to characterize engine load when performing EMA in-field tailpipe sampling without a dynamometer, and to detect deteriorated engines.Evaluations of the EMA by comparison of diesel tailpipe measurements with those made using laboratory-grade instruments showed that the EMA measurements are accurate and reproducible. The results also show that the EMA is capable of detecting emission concentration changes resulting from engine faults. Calculated engine operating and performance parameters correlate and compare well with laboratory-measured values.The EMA in-field engine loading and tailpipe sampling procedures for parked vehicles are presented, and results of the EMA field measurements are also presented. Low coefficients of variation for repeat EMA tailpipe measurements on diesel-powered haulage vehicles in four underground mines indicate that the EMA in-field engine loading and tailpipe sampling procedures are reproducible.An analysis of EMA tailpipe measurements for three haulage vehicles in one mine shows that the EMA can: 1) identify haulage vehicles that emit excessively high pollutant concentrations, and 2) provide data needed to evaluate and determine the efficiency and effectiveness of tailpipe emission control devices.Finally, recommendations for a proposed commercial EMA system are presented. This commercial system would overcome many of the adverse features of the prototype EMA used in these tests."

Ductile hafnium was not obtained consistently by the conventional Kroll process. The bimetal reduction modification produced a more ductile hafnium by lowering the impurities, especially oxygen, in the sponge metal. Hafnium oxide was chlorinated in the presence of carbon to form anhydrous hafnium tetrachloride, which was reduced by sodium and magnesium in an inert atmosphere to produce sponge hafnium metal. After vacuum distillation to remove the byproducts, the sponge was arc-melted into ingot and rolled into strip. Metallic impurities were decreased by evaporating the hafnium tetrachloride from a fused salt. An excessive amount (over 1,200 parts per million (p.p.m.)) of aluminum was contained in some of the hafnium oxide, much of which remained as aluminum chloride in the hafnium tetrachloride during chlorination. Evaporation of the hafnium tetrachloride from a fused NaCI-KCI mixture during the Mg-Na reduction greatly lowered its aluminum content, as most of the aluminum and some of the other metallic impurities were retained by the fused salt.

"The town of Monson in Piscutaquis County, Maine is the, center of an important site industry. Monson slate has a nation-wide reputation, particularly for electrical switch boards, and the deposits have been worked for the manufacture of such products for many years. Open-pit quarrying is the method most commonly employed in obtaining slate. Underground methods have been used in the Peaon Bottom district near Delta, Pennsylvania, but the quarries that were thus operated are now abandoned. Underground methods have been used more extensively in foreign countries, the most famous example being the slate mines at Angers in France, where an over-head stoping method has been employed successfully for many it is only under special conditions that underground methods can be successfully used. If the deposit is wide and relatively thin, or if the material is too unsound to constitute a safe roof, open-pit methods must be used, for slate is too low-priced a commodity to justify the heavy expense of any timbering methods. It is only where the deposit is relatively narrow, of great depth, and sufficiently sound to afford a strong roof that ordinary mining may be employed.The best slate beds in two of the three quarries operated at Monson are no worked by underground methods. The chief bed worked by the Portland Monson Slate Co. is 10 feet thick, stands vertical and strikes N. 63º F. The slaty cleavage is vertical and crosses the strike of the beds at an angle of 5 to 10°. The grain or second direction of splitting is vertical and perpendicular to the cleavage. In addition to the 10-foot bed, to 2-foot beds and one 5-foot bed are available but are not now utilized. In the Monson Maine Slate Co. quarry (the old Pond quarry),a greater number of beds available, but at present quarrying is confined to a single bed about 9 feet thick which dips 30º S.E. and strikes N. 47ºF. The slaty cleavage is vertical and strides N. 45º F., while the grain strikes N. 45-50º W. and is also vertical."

This report documents the work performed and the results obtained during the field demonstration of the Remote Sealing System at the USBM's Jenny Mine near Inez, KY in the Fall of 1978. Although various portions of the Remote Sealing System had been used on a number of prior occasions, the field demonstration at Jenny Mine marked the first use of the complete upgraded system including the use of the inert gas generating system for seal placement and the first application of the new froth foam system. The objective of the field demonstration at Jenny Mine was to demonstrate the complete system by emplacing and evaluating several complete underground seals under conditions representing those of a mine fire situation. Several critical sealing conditions were identified including: ? High entry airflow ? Standing water (1 to 2 ft) in the entry ? Flowing water (150 gal/min) ? Irregular roof ? Sealing a 4-way intersection. Four seals were successfully placed under the conditions mentioned above. The demonstration served to verify proposed techniques to handle these conditions as well as to dispel any doubts about the system's capabilities. As a result of the successful field demonstration, the Remote Sealing Equipment is now under the jurisdiction of MSHA's Mine Emergency Operation ready for a mine fire emergency.

Flotation concentrate originating from the Asarel-Medet porphyry copper mining and processing complex in Bulgaria has been subjected to regrinding using a Ro-Star mill; the effects of which on the downstream metallurgical behaviour are discussed. Particularly the effect on the liberation degree was studied through an optical microscopy and MLA-SEM automated mineralogy. On the other hand, copper selective flotation of the reground bulk concentrate was realised to evaluate the anticipated metallurgical improvement. Process parameters such as involvement of prior hydrocycloning and variation of collector dosage have been evaluated. Within a two-minute residence time inside the Ro-Star mill, an improved liberation degree of the copper bearing minerals has been observed. As a consequence, enhanced copper recovery and selectivity against pyrite was noted. It has been found that in order to guarantee efficient flotation of the resulting ultrafine particles, a modified flotation regime (i.e. changing collector suite and dosages) should be followed. The potential for using heterotrophic microorganisms to solubilize manganese from low-grade domestic ores is being assessed at the Reno Research. center, U.S. Bureau of Mines. More than 90 pct of the manganese has been extracted from a variety of oxide ores in shake-flask tests using molasses as a source of .. nutrients for the microorganisms. It has also been demonstrated that high recoveries of manganese can be obtained from a domestic wad ore using column bioleaching. 'l'he isolation and identification of organisms responsible for manganese extraction is discussed, as are the mechanisms responsible for manganese solubilization.

"The quality of continuous cast steel is greatly affected by fluid flow in the mold region, especially involving transient phenomena. Mathematical models are being applied to investigate many different aspects of these phenomena, but their accuracy must be validated before they can be applied with confidence. As part of a long-term effort to develop and apply comprehensive models of the continuous casting process, this work evaluates the relative accuracy of models of three different fluid flow phenomena in continuous casting through comparison with measurements.Firstly, transient flow simulations of velocities in the mold region are compared with digital particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements in a single phase water model. Large-eddy simulations (LES) are found to reasonably match the flow measurements, including transient flow variations, except at long time scales, which could not be modeled owing to the excessive computation costs. The standard K-e model produced very good agreement with time-averaged velocities for relatively little computation time, although it is inaccurate at predicting the transient variations. Secondly, particle trajectory calculations are compared with water model measurements to study the distribution and flotation removal of inclusion particles. The LES model was able to match the measurements both qualitatively and quantitatively. Thirdly, steady, multi phase flow computations are compared with flow patterns observed in both a water model and an operating steel caster with argon gas injection. For the same conditions, the water model and steel caster produced very different flow behavior. The computational model was able to match the measured flow patterns in both cases.This work suggests that computational flow modeling has the potential to match real processes as well or better than water models, especially when complex related phenomena such as particle motion and multiphase flow are involved. Much work is still needed to further improve the models and to apply them in parametric studies."

Rare earth element (REE) data are reported for ores, sul?de-bearing rocks and host rocks from massive sul?de deposits and barren sul?de facies iron formations in Proterozoic volcanic rocks of the Flin Flon-Snow Lake area, Manitoba. Some of the rare earth elements (e.g., Eu), are selectively leached in zones of intense alteration and redeposited together with the sul?des and silicatesin the uppermost parts of the alteration zones and at the rock-water interface. Chondrite normalized REE pro?les of layered sul?de ores and exhalites proximal to the deposits typically have positive europium anomalies and are enriched in light REE. In contrast, barren sul?de facies iron formations exhibit negative or ‘normal’ Eu pro?les. REE data are useful to explorationists in determining the presence of ‘off-hole’ metal-bearing sul?de zones, in distinguishing metal-poor sul?dic layers related to ‘economic’ hydrothermal activity from barren sul?de facies iron formation and in some instances as a means of establishing ‘ore-equivalent’ strata.

A consideration of the literature shows the inadequacy of Fick's Laws to describe the diffusion of hydrogen in steels below 400°C. These laws are modified an the assumption that hydrogen is delayed at fixed sites in the lattice. Approximate and exact solutions of the resulting nonlinear system are derived for simple geometrical shapes. The results qualitatively account for the observed anomalous behavior. Experimental methods for verifying the theory are suggested. 1 HIS paper presents a new analysis of the diffusion behavior of hydrogen in steel based on a physical model which supposes that hydrogen atoms wander in a random manner through the crystal lattice, but tend to get trapped or delayed at certain fixed sites uniformly distributed throughout the metal. These sites, which will be called traps, are regarded merely as potential wells of significantly greater depth than those encountered in regular regions of the crystal lattices and no assumptions are made concerning their nature or origin. The results of experimental studies of the diffusion of hydrogen in iron and steel have usually been reported in the literature in terms of a diffusion constant D derived under the assumptions that the hydrogen concentration C is governed by Fick's laws.1 Fig. I is a composite of published graphs of the man. ner in which the values of D, so derived, vary with temperature. It is convenient to consider this material in two categories; the high temperature results above 400°C, and the results at lower temperatures. The graphs 2, 3, 4, 5 in the first class lie within a factor of three of each other and are relatively consistent compared with the low-temperature values. There is an increasing divergence in values of D with decreasing temperature till at room temperature they are spread over three orders of magnitude. Small values of D have been obtained for work-hardened specimens.' It is evident that D is a function of other variables besides temperature in this range and that these neglected variables are in some way connected with the work hardening experienced by the specimen. In view of evidence for an interaction between hydrogen in solution and dislocations9'10 and adsorption on crack surfaces,' some doubts must be entertained about the validity of Fick's laws and their associated physical model of noninteracting particles in random motion through the medium. More direct evidence of their inapplicability to the diffusion of hydrogen in steel was first produced by Darken and smith." In recent years there has been increasing interest in employing the technique of explosive casting in strip mines. Explosive casting, applied to dragline mining, describes the procedure whereby the overburden is horizontally displaced by blasting causing a portion of the material to be thrown into the previously mined cut. Therefore, it is not necessary to subsequently excavate this waste with the stripping equipment. In addition, allowing the overburden unrestricted movement during the blast most often results in improved fragmentation and enhanced machine productivity. The method is receiving attention because the capital and maintenance costs of stripping equipment has risen rapidly in relation to explosives costs. Improved productivity is necessary to maintain unit costs at an acceptable level.

Large and small lumps of high-grade, hard manganese oxide minerals are found, frequently embedded in a soft, black matrix of fine particles of manganese oxides mixed with gangue."

Chile is the world's largest copper producer which is mostly in the form of sulfides for which froth flotation is the most efficient concentration process. As a result a concentrate that contains high concentrations of copper sulfides such as chalcopyrite, chalcocite and enargite is obtained. In the last decades processing of ores containing high concentrations of enargite (Cu3AsS4) has continuously increased in Chile, which is related to the fact that ore deposits nawadays are more heterogeneous and complex. Enargite is a mineral that contains arsenic and its presence in the copper concentrates implies severe penalties. In addition, the shortage of fresh water has driven the search for new alternative sources of water, among which seawater has proved to be one of the most attractive. The objective of this research is to study the behavior of the enargite in the process of flotation using seawater, and at the same time to compare its behavior with the results obtained using conventional water. The study was carried thorugh micro-flotation tests using pure samples of enargite, at pH values ranging from 4 to 11, both in fresh and seawater. PAX and MIBC were used as collector and frother respectively. Micro-flotation tests were also done at different redox potential conditions so that the effect of the surface oxidation of enargite was evaluated in seawater. The results indicate that the recovery of copper from enargite is reduced in seawater compared to fresh water, in particular at the pH values close to those of the formation of the first hydroxy complexes of Mg and Ca. In general, the experimental data indicate that the floatability of enargite is strongly affected when seawater is used, in particular at oxidizing conditions. These results suggest that Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions contained in seawater interact with the surface of enargite forming hydrophilic species.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research on many topics relating to the hazards of coal mining, increased production, and protection of the environment. One area of research that has received scant attention in recent years is that of water inflows, probably because few fatalities in the United States have been attributed to them. As mining goes deeper, the problem of water in 1ow could increase dramatically because of adjacent or overlying mines in which huge water pools are impounded. Inaccurate mine maps and ineffective barriers can constitute a serious problem for operators both from gradual inflows and sudden inrushes of water. This report describes a wide but ineffective barrier that permitted an average 240-gpm inflow to a developing mine from an adjacent mine. The anomalous geologic structure that facilitated this leakage is described, demonstrating that size, alone, is no assurance against serious leakage. Some recommendations for managing serious water inflow are included.

(Wilkes-Barre Meeting, June, 1911.) I. LOCATION AND EXTENT. THE Caddo oil-field, shown in Fig. 1, is located in Caddo parish, northwestern Louisiana. The known producing territory of oil is covered by townships 19 N, 20 N, 21 N, 22 N, and ranges 15 and 16 W., shown in Fig. 2. The center of the field may be taken as Oil City, 24 miles north of Shreveport, on the Kansas City Southern railway. Shreveport is the second largest city in the State, and is the connecting point of five rail-road-lines. Drilling at the present time, however, is going on all over northern Louisiana, especially in Caddo and the neighboring parishes. II. HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT. Natural gas escaping at the surface is found at numerous places in northwestern Louisiana. At Shreveport, the plant of the Shreveport Ice & Refrigerating Co. has been lighted by natural gas for 20 years. The well was drilled for water, but was abandoned on account of the gas. A test well, put down in 1905 near the western limits of Shreveport, was driven to 1,650 ft., and encountered indications of gas and oil at various depths, but did not succeed in finding enough to be profitable. Attention was first attracted to the Caddo field in 1895 by indications in water-wells from 40 to 60 ft. deep, in which the pressure of natural gas was noticeable. This indication of gas in a shallow well led to the drilling of the first well in the Caddo field, the old Savage Brothers & Morricell, or the Caddo Lake Oil and Pipe Line No. 1. The rig for this well was erected in May, 1904, and drilling began in June, 1904. The well was bailed Mar. 23, 1905, with a small amount of oil. It was deepened July, 1905, and converted into a "gasser " Jan. 3, 1906. It was abandoned January, 1907. In consequence of the finding of oil in the Savage well, drilling-operations were pushed with energy; and in April, 1905, four wells were drilling. Great trouble was experienced with

A comprehensive numerical capability for the analysis of Thermal Spray (TS) systems consisting of a three-dimensional compressible, turbulent flow Navier-Stokes model and a multi-phase particle flow model in Lagrangian formulation, was developed. This capability is validated for a set of flow conditions typical for TS. The developed methodology is used for analysis of the JP-5000 TS gun gas and coating powder flow conditions. Modeling and analysis of particle/turbulent eddies interaction is performed. Details of gas flow field, particle temperature, and particle velocity histories, and particle temperature, velocity profiles in the system are presented. For the validation of numerical analysis, the computed results are compared with available experimental measurements. The flow phenomena for different flow parameters are analyzed and explained as the results of gas dynamics and heat and momentum transfer between the gas and particle phases. This methodology can be used for process control and reliability improvement, and has the potential to significantly improve TS gun performance through control of its parameters.
