Experimental data from single chisel blows on Leuders limestone are presented. A pressure chamber, similar in design to well known microbit drilling chambers, was utilized to impose variorcs stress states on the sample. Confining pressure of zero to 10,000 psi and borehole pressures from zero to 5,000 psi have been used in the studies. Pore pressure was zero and the rock samples dry in all instances. Force-displacement records and visual examination of the craters indicate that the mode of failure depends on both confining and borehole pressure in certain ranges, ranging from brittle, through a transition, to near plastic. The mode of failure is reflected in the observed blow force and energy data, as well as the shape of force-penetration curves. INTRODUCTION A previous paper' presented initial data from the project on which this paper is the second report. While the first paper dealt with impact studies on synthetic rocks, the literature cited there is also pertinent to this paper, but will not be listed again in order to avoid needless repetition. This paper presents experimental data from single chisel impacts on limestone at certain simulated wellbore stress states. Specific variables investigated were combinations of borehole and confining pressure, crater geometry, a narrow range of impact velocity and the forces required to drive the chisel into the specimens under the varying conditions. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The same basic apparatus described in our earlier paper, except for the pressure vessel, was used in this study. Fig. 1 shows the complete experimental system. Fig. 2 shows details of the pressure cell, which is quite similar to the well known microbit drilling chamber. The confining (overburden) pressure system provides independent pressure control over the sample except for two, 21/4 in. diameter areas located on the sample ends. These two areas provide a pore pressure entrance on the bottom and a striking surface on the top where borehole pressure can be controlled. The ends are isolated from the confining pressure by O-ring seals. The borehole and pore pressures are related through the striking surface; they will be the same unless a seal is deposited on the borehole surface, either a mud cake or some other impermeable membrane. In these studies pore pressure control was not used, as the rocks were dry and unsaturated in all cases. Rock samples were prepared from 4-in. cubes as illustrated by Fig. 3. The circular disks of adhesive vinyl plastic protected the impact surface from the resin coating (Scotchcast No. 2) and were removed just prior to each test. This procedure insured a fresh uncontaminated surface for the impact. Fig. 4 shows the dimensions and loading of the sample, including the concentrations around the "borehole" periphery (O-ring seal). The rock used in this study was Leuders limestone, of Permian age (Leonard), quarried near Leuders, Tex. Geologically, Leuders limestone is a light gray, fossili-ferous limestone (oolitic foraminifera1 biosporite). Its fossil content is 80 to 90 per cent and consists primarily of calcitornellid, ostracods, pelecypods and oolites with the remaining part intraclasts. There are hematite or limo-nite rims on some of the intraclasts. The porosity is approximately 20 per cent, but the permeability is less than 1 md. There is no apparent orientation in the structure. Triaxial tests have been conducted to determine the variation of the physical properties of Leuders limestone in three orthogonal directions', and it is known to be unusually isotropic and uniform. Physical parameters for this rock are: uniaxial compressive strength = 9,700 psi; F = 32 and C = 2,700 psi; where + and C are Coulomb equation values (t = C+u tan +). Impact tests were run under the combinations of confining and borehole pressures shown in Table 1. Samples were dry with atmospheric pore pressure in all cases. Tests, in which elevated borehole pressures were applied, used a single layer of household Saran-Wrap to prevent horehole fluid invasion into the sample. This proved to be simple and reliable. The blunt wedge used in all the tests was 0.75 in. long and had an included angle of 60" with a 0.05-in. flat. The structure, properties, and composition of commercial chelating-type copper extractants are examined. Characterization of these extractants was accomplished using organic separation techniques and analytical tools such as NMR and IR. Results indicate that only the trans isomer of the diphenylhydroxyoxime (LIX (R) 64N) is capable of copper chelation. The effect of the structural modification of the extractants on the extraction and stripping reactions are discussed.

This paper summarizes a survey of fine-grinding practice in ore-concentrating plants throughout the United States, Alaska, Canada, Mexico, and Cuba as reported in the Bureau of Mines Information Circulars on milling methods. The survey covers 49 concentrators, which have a combined capacity of over 160,000 tons per day. In these plants 470 ball, rod, and pebble mills prepare material for flotation, gravity concentration, amalgamation, cyanidation, and air separation. The ores are those of gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, feldspar, and pyrite. The metallurgy is that of the period 1928-32. Of these 49 concentrators, 36 are in the United States. They can treat 134,400 tons per day, and they have 326 fine-grinding mills. In the United States there are about 100 active or temporarily idle concentrators, exclusive of the many plants in the Tri-State zinc district, the washeries of the Lake Superior iron ranges and the Florida phosphate area, and small gold and silver concentrators. These 100 plants have an estimated capacity of 290,000 tons per day and employ about 650 ball, rod, and pebble mills. Consequently, since this paper covers about half of the production of this country it may be considered as particularly representative of fine grinding in ore mills in the United States.

An analysis of bolting reinforcement of several large [approximately 18 m (60 ft) cube] pillars was performed. The many overcoring stress profiles in pillars at the mine were used to produce generalized stress distributions at various stages in pre- and post-failure. A complete stress-deformation curve was estimated from this data. The effect of pillar bolting on the load-deformation behavior was extrapolated from the observed unbolted behavior. Bolting can increase pillar strength by up to 10 percent. The effect of bolting on general mine stability was examined with a short computer analysis. The computer model was calibrated against measurements performed at the mine, and produced good agreement between measured and modeled stresses. The analysis indicated that bolting increases the bolted pillar safety factors in the event of additional pillar failure by a small amount (approximately 5 percent). Progressive pillar failure is unlikely, because arching transfers most load from yielding pillars to large unmined abutments rather than to the smaller panel pillars.

Data are presented comparing results obtained with 17 different catalysts in hydrogenating crude shale oil to gasoline in single-pass operation. A method is described for predicting the maximum yield of gasoline obtainable at constant pressure for each catalyst from results of a limited number of experiments at different temperatures. Operating variables have considerable influence on yields and properties of products. With most of the catalysts, at operating temperatures below 890° F. liquid yield exceeded 100 volume-percent. Above this temperature the volume of liquid product decreased rapidly. Maximum gasoline production in most instances was achieved at a temperature higher than that at which the maximum volume of liquid product was produced.

This report presents a U.S. Bureau of Mines methodology developed to incorporate factors of coal production (mining and cleaning methods, recoveries, economics, etc.) into the definition of recover-ability of a coal resource. Project procedures and computer models that were developed to include mine and preparation plant production rates, recoveries, and costs are explained. The results of these procedures and models are reviewed and compared to the Energy Information Administration estimate of U.S. coal resources-the "demonstrated reserve base." The Matewan 7-1/2-minute quadrangle in eastern Kentucky was selected to demonstrate the methodology.

"This report is () expansive test program by the Bureau of Mines to determine methods from various and ferrous manganese-grade product () widespread () and manfniferrous iron ores. Among the samples received for testing was one from the pits of the Barytes Mining Co., 1-1/ 2 miles northeast of Cartersville, Ga.. The property is approximately in the center of the Cartersville manganese district and shares a common corner with properties of the New Riverside Ochre Co. and the Etowah Development Co., both producers of manganifereus ores. The deposit is typical of the district and occurs in residual clays resulting from weathering of the Shady limestone and Weisner quartzite. 7/The property is developed by a number of open pits ranging to 60 feet in depth. In 1918 several carloads of manganiferous iron ore was mined from an alit on the property. Since then mining operations have been negligible. The ore is known locally as calico ore.A 4-ton sample representing -re as it occurs in the -pen pits vas furnished for testing. The sample consisted of a mixture of red iron oxides, wad, and clay, with small pebbles of manganese oxides and siliceous fragments scattered throughout."

Floyd County, KY., contains sizable deposits of high volatile bituminous coal. Some of the coals have been blended with higher-rank coals and used in the manufacture of high-quality metallurgical coke. The Upper Elkhorn No. 3, Upper Elkhorn No. 2, and Upper Elkhorn No. 1 beds produce the bulk of the present output in the county and contain the main known reserves of coal. Little information is available concerning the quality and extent of the deposits underlying the Upper Elkhorn No. 1 bed, although small operations in the past have worked a bed that is reported to be; the Lower Elkhorn. Undoubtedly, these lower beds occur in Floyd County, but depth Will preclude their development into a major source of fuel as long as large deposits of more-accessible coal are available. More is known of the occurrence of the beds above the Upper Elkhorn No. 3 owing to sporadic mining ventures in the upper measures. Many of the coal samples from beds above the Upper Elkhown No. 3. were collected in mines that had been abandoned. Almost all of the present production of Floyd County coal is taken from the Upper Elkhorn beds, and it is unlikely that their dominant position as coal producers will be challenged in the near future. Table 1 shows the coal production of the county by beds, during 1950.

The Cuyuna range in central Minnesota has been the source of substantial tonnages of, manganiferous iron ores for almost four decades. To Increase the Nation's self-sufficiency in manganese reserves, the Bureau of Mines initiated a comprehensive investigative program to determine and develop the potential manganese reserves in the region. In the course of compiling all available information on the Cuyuna range, the Scallop-Todd lease appeared to be an area having favorable possibilities for developing substantial reserves of manganese. Early drilling on this lease indicated considerable tonnages of material relatively high in manganese. More recent drilling substantiated the size of the deposit but Indicated lower manganese values. However, beneficiation tests of samples obtained from the recent drilling indicated that the material was amenable to concentration.

The results of a laboratory investigation of coal cutting mechanics and noise is presented. These experiments were performed using a linear cutting apparatus that operates over a broad cutting speed range. The influence of several coal cutting parameters on the noise, force, productivity, and specific energy associated with linear cuts is ascertained. Some basic theoretical aspects of coal cutting mechanics and noise generation are discussed, and the results of the laboratory experiments are used to Formulate analytical models of the coal cutting forces and noise. The analytical model For coal cutting noise is then generalized to account for the more important effects of rotary cutting. Based on the generalized model, an estimate of the sound pressure level at an operator's position is made for a typical continuous mining machine. It is concluded that by employing linear rather than rotary cuts, using deeper depths of cut, slower cutting speeds, and more efficient cutting tools, it is possible to reduce the level of coal cutting noise, as well as Provide benefits to other important areas of underground health and safety.

On entering the World War the United States was confronted with the necessity of building in a short time a large number of ships of tonnage adequate to transport troops and war materials to Europe and to carry food supplies to the allied countries, whose merchant fleets had suffered greatly by submarine warfare. The necessity of building ships quickly led to the formation of the United States Shipping Board, which was charged with the duty of developing an efficient organization for the purpose. Such an organization was developed under the name of the Emergency Fleet Corporation; it was under the control of the Government, but could conduct its business in the most direct way, like a private corporation. In order to build the largest- number of ships possible without drawing too heavily on the steel industry, which was already taxed heavily by the production of munitions, it was decided to build wooden as well as steel ships. These ships were built from a few standard designs to enable a large number of duplicate parts to be fabricated in inland shops and transported by railroad to the shipyards on the seacoast, where they were assembled into ships. In other words, the plan was to manufacture the ships rather than to build them. The shops on the seacoast were reserved to make those parts of the ships' equipment that could not readily be transported. The inland shops made the parts that could be transported to the seacoast by railroad. Among the more important parts of the ships' equipment to be standardized were the boilers. As the Scotch marine boiler in large units is bulky and can not be transported by railroad, and as, for the same capacity,much more steelis needed in its construction than for water-tube boilers, a few simple designs of water-tube boilers were developed that inland shops having ordinary equipment could make in large quantities.

Microseismic monitoring is regularly used in the mining and geotechnical industries to provide detailed information about rock mass response to operational activities. This paper implements a variable 3D velocity model (VM) at a North American hard rock mine with the aim of further improving the accuracy of seismic event locations. A collapsing method is also used to help analyse two individual seismic event clusters at another North American hard rock mine. In the first case study, the location accuracy of events is shown to improve by moving from a conventional single VM to a variable 3D VM that accounts for voids and different geological domains. The modal average for the event location accuracy improved from 14 m to 5 m when the 3D VM was used. Additionally, the single VM failed to locate 26 per cent of the seismic events that were located by the 3D VM. In the second case study, the distribution of seismic events was further enhanced by using a collapsing method that highlighted planar structures. The collapsing method was performed on two large event sequences that occurred in close proximity and identified different seismic event distributions. One aftershock sequence aligned along a plane, suggesting an activated structure, while the other large event sequence had a more 3D distribution of events, suggesting a complex stress redistribution on smaller structures.CITATION:Pinnock, I, Collins, D S, Toya, Y and Hosseini, Z, 2016. The 7-mile Flathead Tunnel, located in the central Salish Mountains of northwestern Montana, was constructed between 1966 and 1969, With the contract awarded April 19, 1966, drill and blast tunnel excavation began September 30, 1966, and was completed June 21, 1968, in 488 tunnel-driving days, Peak advance was 66 feet per day. On June 27, 1969, all tunnel concrete lining was completed. Average wall and arch concrete placing rates exceeded 1,700 cubic yards daily, with nearly half of the concrete placed during a severe winter season. Major cost savings in concrete tunnel lining were achieved through a value engineering clause in the contract. Achieving consistent results and high rates of placement in concrete lining ranked equal to ground control in overall tunnel problems. Ground control problems exceeded expectations and were of continual concern throughout excavation, One support collapse in the tunnel and one portal slide condition developed during construction. Critical surface geologic exposures were largely obscured; only a portion could be accurately projected underground, An instrumentation program to gather basic data on rock defamation near the heading face for support purposes was a pioneering effort. The Flathead Tunnel was placed in service on November 7, 1970.

"This work presents the results of the development of a flowchart for the processing of copper production dusts resulting in the production of of lead sulphate, tribasic lead sulfate (TBLS), ammonium perrhenate, zinc, copper-cadmium cake.Dust having the following composition (wt. %): Pb 39.3, Zn 6.5, Cu 5.5, Stotal 10.8, As 1.05, SiO2 0.6, Cd 0.8, Bi 0.04, Ag 0.02, Re 0.03 was used in the work. Chemical and X-ray analyses indicated that lead, zinc and copper are generally present in dusts in the form of sulfates, various amounts of oxides, sulfides, silicates; sulfur (according to chemical analysis data) is present in the form of sulfates (~ 90%) and in the form of sulfides (~ 10%).Studies have been made on two-stage stripping of copper production dusts containing lead, zinc, copper, cadmium, rhenium in the form of various compounds, at first with soda solution, then with nitric acid solution. It has been indicated that the combination of the operations allows the recovery of 98% rhenium, 82% lead, 92% copper, and 96% zinc and cadmium each in the solution. Furthermore, at the stage of dust leaching with soda, 80% of rhenium and 0.01% of nonferrous metals each are recovered in the solution. Remaining quantities of all metals are recovered in nitric acid solution up to maximum values. Such behaviour of metals is caused by metal phase content in dusts and properties being formed during leaching of compounds. At the stage of dust leaching with soda solutions, carbonates with various compositions are formed due to the exchange reaction between nonferrous metal sulfates and sodium carbonate. The conversion of PbSO4 into PbCO3 is apparently occurs in the solid phase and the conversion of readily watersoluble zinc, copper, and cadmium sulfates into that of carbonate salts occurs in the liquid phase. Rhenium passes into solution due to the presence of rhenium greater quantity in dust in the form of readily soluble perrhenate. Some portion of the perrhenate is, probable, blocked by lead sulfate and liberated in the conversion of PbSO4 into PbCO3."

The low-rank coals containing 10 to 50 pet natural bed moisture represent over half of the tonnage reserve of the available solid fuels of the United States, but only about 2 pet of United States coal production is derived from these fuels. Increased utilization of these large reserves will result if the bed moisture can be removed at the mine in high-speed low-cost processes. This paper presents a theoretical and experimental study of the factors affecting high-speed drying of coal dusts. The time required to heat particles of coal is proportional to the square of their diameter, and it is calculated that the probable time in minutes is equal to 6D2. In other words, a 11 a in. coal particle should be heated to drying temperature in 1.5 to 2.0 sec. Likewise, 1/8 in. particles should be heated in about 6 sec. The net heat required to dry subbituminous coal and lignite varies from 240 to 375 Btu per pound, depending upon the moisture removed, and this heat can be obtained from 42 to 61 cu ft of hot gases at 600°F.

Lynn lake, Manitoha, where Sherritt has operated a copper-nickel mine since 1954, is located north of the 56th parallel approximately SOO miles north of Winnipeg. Sherritt's new, 3,000 tpd, copper-zinc Fox Mine is situated 30 miles southwest of Lynn lake. This paper focuses on the Fox Mine concentrator, hut first some background information. Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited started mining operations as a copper-zinc producer in 1931 at Sherridon, Manitoba, 150 miles south of Lynn Lake. As Sherridon fizzled out development of a series of nickel-copper orebodies commenced at Lynn Lake. The Forward process was developed to treat the nickel concentrate from the Lynn concentrator. Sherritt's ammonia leaching process is now history and is expected to gain more prominence as pressure is applied to the mining industry for closer environmental control. But few are aware of the fact that the present Lynn Lake crushing plant and concentrator were dismantled in the autumn of 1951 and freighted from Sherridon by tractor train during the winters of 1952 and 1953. The copper-zinc orehody at Fox Mine was discovered early in 1961 by geophysical methods which included both airborne and ground surveys. It is part of a ,large body of massive and semi-massive sulphides consisting chiefly of pyrite; with chalcopyrite, sphalerite (containing 7-9% iron) and pyrrhotite in varying proportions which occur within a series of volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The total mineralized zone is a lenticular body with a minimum average length and width of 1,350 feet and 66 feet respectively, to the explored depth of 2,000 feet. The average sulphide content is 67%. Higher zinc zones are masses of pyrite grains cemented by sphalerite with lower than average copper content. Zones higher in copper and lower in zinc are slightly more quartzose. Gold and silver are present in small amounts roughly proportional to the copper content.

The Bureau of Mines has devised and demonstrated a process for recovering Ni and Co from low-grade domestic laterites. The process consists of four major steps: (1) reduction roast, (2) ammoniacal leach, (3) solvent extraction, and (4) electrowinning. Several solid-liquid separation steps are required that affect the economics of the overall pro-cess. In this study, two techniques for solid-liquid separation, centrifugation and thickening, were investigated. This report presents the results of (1) laboratory and pilot plant studies to determine parameters for sizing centrifuges and thickeners and (2) an economic study of the two techniques, based on the requirements of a commercial-size (5,OOO-tpd) laterite processing plant. Sizing and other equipment-related recommendations, based on data from the Bureau's studies, were obtained from commercial manufacturers. The costs of thickening and centrifugation, including all the unit operations affected, were determined by the Bureau's process evaluation group. The total operating costs ~or separation using the two techniques (including depreciation on the capital cost of equipment) were found to be quite close: $17.26 per ton of laterite for centrifugation and $18.15 per ton of laterite for thickening. For centrifugal separation, the greatest cost was found to be the initial capital cost for the separation equipment; using thickeners, the greatest cost was for re-agent recovery.

Carbonizing properties of the principal coalbeds of Elk, Clarion, Jefferson, Clearfield, and Centre Counties, Pa,, are described in this Bureau of Mines report, Twenty-six samples, representing the Upper Freeport, Lower Freeport, Upper Kittanning, Middle Kittanning, Lower Kittanning, and Brookville beds, were carbonized by the Bureau of Mines--American Gas Association (BM-AM) method, and yields of products and physical properties of cokes were determined. Expansion or contraction of the majority of the samples was measured in the Bureau of Mines sole-heated oven. Chemical analyses, agglutinating values, and free-swelling indexes are given for all samples. In this area the coals generally are characterized by high sulfur and moderately high ash content, and their suitability for metallurgical use would depend largely upon satisfactory cleaning. The samples from Elk, Clarion, and Jefferson Counties were high-volatile A bituminous In rank, whereas, most samples from Clearfield County and all those from Centre County were of medium-volatile rank. Coals from Clarion County had dry, mineral- matter-free fixed-carbon contents ranging from 56.5 to 60.3 percent and were weakly coking. With the exception of two samples which contained excessive ash, the medium-volatile coals of Clearfield and Centre Counties were strongly coking and, as indicated by sole-oven expansion results, would require blending with lower rank coal to avoid oven damage.
