INTRODUCTIONBoston’s Big Dig, as the construction of the underground artery became known, is undoubtedly the largest urban construction project of this century.The Central Artery/Tunnel Project, or CA/T, to call it by its proper name, runs approximately eight miles through the heart of Boston, five miles of which are built underground while maintaining traffic on the elevated existing structure, while at its southern end I-90 is extended to Logan airport under active rail lines, Fort Point Channel and Boston Inner Harbor.Since the alignment of the road closely parallels the shoreline as it existed in colonial times, the cut and cover construction had to contend with substantial portions of filled ground, not to mention existing subway lines, live utilities, building foundations and, last but not least, the irritable Boston drivers and litigious adjacent property and business owners.Consequently, while it is impossible to single out the most difficult or challenging contract, the jacking of the tunnels of I-90 under the live rails of Amtrak certainly will rank high on the list.Never before, anywhere in the world, was an attempt made to jack tunnels of this size: the South Bay Interchange consists of three 78 feet (24 m) wide by 38 feet (11.6 m) high tunnels, the shortest of which is 167 feet (51 m) long. TECHNOLOGYIn order to achieve this engineering feat it was necessary to consolidate the soil under the track to prevent it from moving or settling during the jacking process. After a detailed analysis of the geological profile to be traversed it was decided that freezing was the most suitable method, since it could be applied to the full range of soils present on the proposed alignment."

The Australian Broken Hill Consols mine is situated within a third of a mile eastwards of the famous Broken Rill Proprietory mine; but, so far as has yet been proved, the respective lodes have no connection whatever. The Proprietory line of lode, striking N.E. and S.W., is coincident with the bedding-planes of the inclosing gneiss, and, according to Mr. E. F. Pittman, A.R.S.M., government geologist, is undonbtedly a saddle-formation. This opinion, which met with much opposition at the time it was advanced, is now, I understand, being generally confirmed as the work of development opens out fresh areas for observation along the line of lode. The lode is of immense thickness—in places over 300 feet and though it has been found to contain sufficient quantities of secondary silver compounds to yield phenomenal outputs of silver, its principal constituents are various lead and other ores, and it would appear more correct to regard it as an argentiferous lead-deposit than as a silver-lode proper. The Consols lode differs from its gigantic neighbor in every respect. With an average thickness of not more than 18 inches, it has been worked along its course for upwards of 1300 feet, and at every point yet explored has been found remarkably well-defined and persistent. With a strike E. and W., it cuts obliquely across the bedding of gneiss and schist, continuing uninterruptedly through various bands of eruptive amphibolite. The dip, which is to the south, ranges from 24 near the surface to nearly vertical in the lower levels; but the alteration is not regular, as in places the lode is almost flat, and this at a vertical depth of over 300 feet. Samples of fine coal refuse were obtained from 11 coal preparation plants throughout the United States. These samples were characterized by ash analysis, particle size, and mineral composition. From the characterization, geographical locations, and the dewatering equipment being used by the plants, five sites were selected for obtaining bulk fine refuse samples. The selected coal preparation plants were using for final dewatering thickeners followed by: a vacuum disc filter, a filter press, a belt press filter, a centrifuge, and a settling pond. None were using thermal drying. The moisture content of the final cake varied from approximately 23% to 50% depending upon the feed material, flocculant addition, and the type of equipment. The filter press gave the lowest moisture content followed by a belt press and then either a centrifuge or vacuum filter. The centrifuge products were all dried to an approximate 5% moisture in a thermal dryer.

Preliminary to an experimental study of selected physical properties of helium and related gases) the Bureau of Mines Helium Research Center conducted a data-gathering literature survey. This report combines the results of the 1961-63 literature search into a usable format. The data accumulated on the physical properties are presented in tables and graphs. The data in the tables were chosen for exact representation and comparison of specific values. An attempt was made to select the most reliable and consistent value available for a given property without extensively analyzing each source reference. The methods of evaluation are discussed later. The graphs show trends and anomalies which may be obscure in tabular form. The increased effectiveness of a two-phase spray system (TPSS) over a single-phase spray system (SPSS) for dust suppression is reported in several laboratory studies. The dust collection efficiencies of SPSS and TPSS were studied in a model experimental longwall gallery facility at Pittsburgh Research Laboratory at NIOSH (USA). The experimental design consisted of two factors: pressure, and airflow. Each factor had three levels. SPSS experiments were conducted at only one pressure (1035 kPa) which is nearly 1.5 times higher than the highest air and water pressure for TPSS experiments. The results of the study are presented in this paper. While it appears that TPSS performed better than SPSS, the data is not sufficiently conclusive on this aspect. The differing spray characteristics of the chosen TPSS and SPSS nozzles did not allow a direct comparison of the two systems. In the TPSS arrangement, considerably greater turbulence in airflow is created around the shearer; it is likely that at least in the immediate vicinity of the tailgate drum, there is a roll back of the dust/mist cloud into the walkway. Therefore, positioning of the personnel upwind of the tailgate drum is necessary to avoid high dust exposures. The rate of decrease in concentration with TPSS is higher than that with SPSS. This may be due to the greater atomization of the water. The test set-up did not allow the study of conditions when coal is cut from tail to head where the potential for personal exposure is high. Changes in the experimental design are necessary to overcome some of the reasons expected for the inconclusive results.

This report is volume 7 of an eleven-volume final report for a Grant completed by The Pennsylvania State University for the Bureau of Mines to develop a dynamic general purpose computer simulation model for underground coal mining. The simulator developed under the Grant has a wide range of possible applications in the design and evaluation of underground coal mining systems from the standpoints of health and safety, productivity, and mine environment. The Master Design Simulator consists of nine free-standing function-oriented subsystem models linked together into an integrated, comprehensive model of an entire mining system. The subsystems comprising the Master Design. Simulator include geology and reserves, methane generation, roof support, subsidence, production, rail haulage, cost, water generation," and ventilation. This volume of the final report describes the Rail Haulage subsystem of the Master Design Simulator. This subsystem can be used as a free standing model or can be linked to the Production subsystem to provide rail haulage capability. Complex rail haulage systems can be realistically simulated with this model. This report includes complete instructions for operating the subsystem as well as a program listing. In addition, a case study is included which illustrates the application of the subsystem when linked to the production subsystem.

Any design of a mine roof in bedded deposits which ignores differential deflections at the supports can quickly lead to dangerous overstressing. As illustrated by the typical case presented on page 1029, if one support deflects only 0.1 in. more than its neighbor, stresses 50 pct higher than anticipated will result. Previous studies1-3 have assumed that the mine roof acts like a beam clamped at both ends, with no deflection or slope4 at the supports (Fig. 1). Supercompressibility factors, Fpv, were derived from experimental compressibility data for five helium-nitrogen mixtures containing from 50 to 100 pct helium. These Fpv values are required as volumetric correction factors for or if ice meter measurement of "crude helium" (helium-nitrogen) purchased by the Government in a program of helium conservation. Although compressibility measurements were made by the Burnett method (2)3 - for pressures from 100 to 3,400 psia and temperatures from 40° to 100° F, Fpv values were needed only for pressures from 400 to 2,000 psia. Consequently, values at increments of 2° F, 2 pct helium, and 10 psia were tabulated only for the required pressure range. Values for pressures outside this range can be calculated from information shown in the tables. Values for the second, third, and fourth coefficients in the equation Z = 1 + BP + CP2 + DP3 are also included.

A process for recovering manganese from open-hearth steel-plant slags was investigated. The proposed method of accomplishing this is indicated by the flow diagram in figure 1. Mixtures of open-hearth, steel-plant flush slags and limestone, so proportioned as to have molar [CaO -3P205] ratios of approximately 2, were fired at approximately 2,400° F. in an oxidizing atmosphere and then cooled slowly. This treatment produced a clinker consisting principally of two solid phases comprised of (1) various combinations of the oxides of manganese, iron, aluminum, and magnesium, probably in spinel complexes, and (2) a dicalcium silicate phase, which contains the phosphorus. Reduction of these clinkers with hydrogen or with gaseous mixtures containing CO, CH4, and other hydrocarbons at about 1,300° F. formed manganous oxide as well as varying amounts of ferrous oxide and iron. Carbon monoxide and mixtures of hydrogen and carbon monoxide effectively reduced the clinkers but also gave higher proportions of soluble iron when the manganese was extracted from the reduced clinkers by leaching at about 80° F. with ammonium carbonate solutions containing 26 to 28 percent ammonia and 15 to 26 percent carbon dioxide. It is believed that the manganese is in solution as an ammonia-manganese complex. Concentrations of about 90 grams of manganese per liter were obtained by batch countercurrent procedures. By distilling 50 percent of the ammonia, the ammonia-manganese complex was decomposed, and approximately 90 percent of the manganese was precipitated as the carbonate with the simultaneous precipitation of 15 to 30 percent of the iron, the larger amounts of iron precipitating in the continuous tests. The manganese-iron ratio in the product could be increased either by recycling more manganese from the distillation to the extraction or by aerating the liquor to purge it of iron before, rather than after, the distillation step. Calcination of the pelletized manganese carbonate in an oxidizing stmosphere at 2,000° F. or above gave a final product, Mn304, resistant to crushing and apparently possessing the other physical properties essential in a ferromanganese blast-furnace feed.

Volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits are generally considered to have been formed by hydrothermal fluids that leach ore metals out of footwall rocks. However, the necessity for a metal-rich magmatic component in the ore-forming fluid of "giant" ore deposits has been debated over the decades. The solution to this issue is important not only for metallogenic models but also for the mineral exploration. In the hydrothermal leaching model, massive sulfides at mid-ocean ridges are deposited from hydrothermal fluids containing 80 ppm Fe, 6 ppm Zn, 2 ppm Cu, 350oC, and 0.7 g/cm3 density (average data for 21oN East Pacific Rise). A simple calculation demonstrates that such a dilute fluid is unlikely to have been responsible for the formation of the largest ancient massive sulfide ores of greater than 100x106 tonnes, such as Kidd Creek, Brunswick No. 12, Neves Corvo, and Rio Tinto. For such a deposit consisting primarily of pyrite, sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite (other minerals, including gangue, might account for an additional 10-20%) and even assuming 100% precipitation and retention of the sulfides, more than 790 km3 of vent fluid would be required. For typical water-rock reaction ratios of about 2, this fluid would have to have reacted with about 395 km3 of rock to acquire its metals by conventional leaching processes. This estimate, however, conflicts with the observation that even a giant massive sulfide ore body is usually underlain only by a few cube kilometers of obviously altered rocks. Moreover, this model is not consistent with the observation of hanging wall alteration in many large massive sulfide deposits. The close spatial association between massive sulfides and volcanic rocks, in both ancient and modern sea floors, suggests that direct magmatic contribution should be taken into account in the genetic model. Magmatic fluids, capable of carrying abundant ore metals and volatiles and escaping from magma by depressurization, are well known from modern active volcanoes on land. High concentrations of metals occur in CO2-rich magmatic fluid trapped in felsic volcanic rocks nearby large presently-forming VMS deposits in the eastern Manus Basin (Pacmanus, Suzette) and also in the footwall rocks of Ordovician giant Brunswick #12 deposit in the Bathurst district, New Brunswick. Only 1% of such metal-rich magmatic fluid mixed with heated sea water, that has leached its metals from rocks, would contribute 85% of the total metals to form an orebody. Such magmatic fluids are most likely to be formed from volatile-rich felsic magmas that are prevalent in back arcs, and, if added to the normal circulation system, the fluids could be responsible for the formation of "giant" ore deposits. If this is true, then the study of magmatic fluids in the seafloor volcanic rocks may provide criteria for the exploration of large ore deposits.

The following paper is intended to be suggestive only, and to open the way for discussion and further observation. Its preparation was requested only two days before the time limit set for the submission of the papers comprising this symposium. Thus no time existed for detailed studies, so it is largely a memorandum of such facts as have come incidentally to the notice of the writer in the study of coal in the field. The field study of sulfur in coal has received very little special attention or description from coal student's. The presence of sulfur concretions is noted in hundreds of descriptions, and certain benches of a coal bed may be described as "sulfury" or the presence and position of sulfur bands may be noted in coal sections in connection with sampling. It may be accepted that some sulfur is present in all coal. The amount varies greatly in different regions, in different beds, and in the same bed in different areas. The anthracite of Rhode Island comes the nearest of any coal known to the writer of being free from sulfur, several analyses of that coal showing less than 0.1 per cent. Subbitumi-nous coals in Colorado in a few places have close to 0.2 per cent. of sulfur on the dry-coal basis and in other states subbituminous coals approach this lower limit. Bituminous coals seldom run under 0.4 per cent. of sulfur on the dry basis, though in a few places dry bituminous coals in Colorado and Washington have between 0.3 and 0.4 per cent. The better known bituminous coals have almost everywhere over 0.4 per cent. The best of the Pocahontas and New River coals run close to 0.4 per cent., but there is very little commercial coal in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, or the other states, that runs under 0.5 per cent. on the dry basis. From these minimum figures, the amount will range up to 5 or 6 per cent. or higher if visible sulfur is not excluded. It must be remembered that the usual analysis of a coal bed is not intended to give the total proportion of sulfur in the bed but the amount in the coal after the removal of the more obvious and larger sulfur masses. Professor Parr has already pointed out that, chemically, sulfur occurs in several forms: as pyrite, organic sulfur, sulfates, and possibly as un-combined sulfur. Sulfur in the form of sulfates is commonly the obvious result of the weathering of pyrite and may be found in the coal within .

This is a report on work done and results obtained in a minerals exploration program conducted by the Bureau of Mines on the lead-zinc deposits in the Ross Basin-Lake Como district, San Juan County, Colo., in 1948, 1949, and 1950. Four large veins--the Seven Thirty, Red Rogers, Cashier-Shorts top-Canandaigua, and Queen Anne--and several narrow spur veins were explored at relatively shallow depths with core-drill holes. Thirty-nine holes, totaling 10,491.5 feet, were drilled, and the core samples were assayed at the Bureau of Mines station at Salt Lake City, Utah.

Oil bearing rocks, usually found at depths of 2,000 to 10,000 it, are elastically deformed by overburden pressure. Although the change in porosity with pressure in a number of example rock.: has been shown to be small, it was thought that overburden pressure might have a significant effect on permeability. This note presents results of an investigation to determine the magnitude of the change in permeabilty with pressure. In routine core analysis permeabilities are measured on rock samples which are not under overburden pressure. If permeablity measured in this way differs from permeabilities measured under overburden pressure, a systematic error is introduced into well productivity calculations. The experiments described in this report were made to determine the magnitude of the change and thus to give an estimate of the error introduced into the calculations. The error introduced by the neglect of the change in permeability when overburden pressure is removed may account for part of the difference between well productivity calculated from core analysis and the actual well productivity. The results obtained in this investigation have only quali-tative significance because of the difficulty in reproducing in the laboratory the stress conditions on the rock buried in the earth. The assumption which is usually made is that the rocks in the earth are under a uniform pressure equal to the weight per unit area of the vertical overburden column from the rock in question to the surface of the earth less the pressure of the liquid in the pores of the rock. For an overburden consisting of sandstones and shales (of assumed average specific gravity of 2.3) and for a liquid pressure equal to the pressure in a salt water column (of specific gravity 1.0) reaching from the rock to the surface, the resulting net pressure on the rock is approximately 0.56 psi per ft of depth. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Clean, dry sandstone core plugs one in. in diameter and about three in. long were mounted in a copper foil jacket as shown in Fig. 3 or molded in a Lucite jacket as shown in Fig. 4. All cores except those labeled "2" in Fig. 1 and "8" in Fig. 2 were measured in the copper foil jacket. Cores "2" and "8" were measured in the Lucite jacket. The jacketed core was placed in a high pressure hydraulic bomb in which the liquid pressure outside the jacket could be raised to 15,000 psi. Flow lines from the core were brought out of the bomb through special fittings in the bomh head and connected to a laboratory type gas permeameter. Measurements were made with nitrogen gas; the maximum mean gas pressure in the core was 16.1 psia. RESULTS The specific permeability of sandstone decreases with in. crease in overburden pressure. Most of the decrease takes place over the range of zero to 3,000 psi overburden pressure. If the net pressure on the rock is assumed to be 0.56 psi per ft of depth as discussed above, 3,000 psi of overburden pressure is equivalent to about 5,000 ft of overburden. At 3,000 psi overburden pressure, the permeability of the eight sandstone core samples tested ranged from 59 to 89 per cent of the permeability without overburden pressure. Figs. 1 and 2 show the permeability reduction as a function of overburden pressure. The permeability of the eight cores without overburden pressure ranged from 4.35 md to 632 md; these permeabilities are listed in Figs. 1 and 2. REFERENCES 1. WITH the development of new processes for the production of synthetic liquid fuels, an extensive literature search was undertaken to uncover fundamental relationships between fluid and heat flows and the operating variables of new types of converters. Examination of published correlations revealed that considerable uncertainty existed in the correlation of the operating variables of such equipment with the pressure drops which could be expected through packed and fluidized systems; correlations proposed in the literature differed from each other frequently by as much as 75 to 100 percent. Because new processes, especially more recent modifications of the original Fischer-Tropsch process, must compete with old, firmly established processes on the basis of unit product cost, the pressure-drop correlations in the literature were considered to be too inaccurate for use in calculating the energy required to pass fluids through packed beds. The following study was begun in 1946 to develop correlations that would be suitable for the design of new equipment in which fluids are brought into contact with granular materials. To arrive at general relationships, systems were chosen that did not involve chemical reactions, and a, particular effort was made to give the correlations only in terms of quantities that are ordinarily available from general process and design specifications.

The evident need to improve the reliability of fluid power systems in underground coal mining equipment prompted the U.S. Bureau of Mines, and later the Department of Energy, to contract with the Fluid Power Research Center at Oklahoma State University for a research project to develop methods for achieving this end. Since the work of the contract was completed at about the time DOE was relinquishing its underground coal mining projects to BOM it was decided to issue the final report under 80M cover. The contract revealed that the major causes of poor reliability were: (1) poor overall system design, (2) poor component contamination toleranace, (3) poor system filtration, and 4) poor maintenance practices stemming from a lack of defined maintenance procedures and enforcement of same. This report demonstrates the variability of the reliabilities of components of similar performance description when subjected to standard tests. Improved design procedures are recommended and the information needed to specify and select components whose reliability is predictable and optimum without sacrifice in performance or significant increase in envelope size.

The thermal reactions of l-methylindole were studied in the temperature range of 525° to 627° C in a flow reactor. The major products consisted of 2-methylindole, 3-methylindole, indole, quinoline, hydrogen, and methane. 2-Methylindole is formed from 1-methylindole by an irreversible isomerization reaction. The 2-methylindole isomerizes in a reversible manner to 3-methyl-indole, the equilibrium favoring the 3-methyl isomer. Indole is formed directly from 1-methylindole. Quinoline is formed from l-methylindole, 2-methylindole, and 3-methylindole.

In this work the extractive and selective capacities of solvent extraction synergistic systems to recover nickel and cobalt were evaluated. The liquor used was from the high pressure acid leaching process (HPAL). Initially the industrial liquor, processed from lateritic ores, was analyzed to identify the concentrations of the metals. Experiments of synergistic solvent extraction were performed later. The extraction liquid-liquid was carried out with a mixture of Cyanex 272 (CY) and Ionquest 290 (IQ) extractants. The process was executed with the temperature of 65 ºC, pH of 5.2 and the ratio aqueousorganic 2:1. Systems of 80% kerosene and CY 20%, CY 16% - IQ 4%, CY 12% - IQ 8%, CY 8% - IQ 16%, CY 4% - IQ 16%, IQ 20% were studied during 20 minutes. The results of this paper showed that the mixture of these two extractants doesn’t improve significantly the recovery of nickel and cobalt from liquor.

Scientifically known as sepiolite, it is represented by the formula Si12Mg8O30(OH)4(H2O)4(8H2O). Sepiolite is a natural clay mineral composed of hydrous magnesium silicate, characterized by a structure of alternating blocks and tunnels that develop in the direction of the fiber. Each structural block contains two silica tetrahedral sheets surrounding a central layer of magnesium oxide- hydroxide. Sepiolite exists in two distinct forms in nature: alpha-sepiolite and beta-sepiolite. Alpha- sepiolite is amorphous, compact, and resembles pellets that look like sea froth, hence its Turkish name Luletasi. In contrast, beta-sepiolite appears as amorphous aggregates or small, flat, round particles. These two forms exhibit different physical properties. Meerschaum was also studied by Brauner and Preisinger in 1958, who agreed that it primarily consists of sepiolite (2MgO·3SiO2·nH2O). According to these researchers, water is present in its mineral, zeolitic, crystal, and structural forms. Meerschaum is commonly used for adsorbing various liquids, as an ion exchanger, and for dispersing and insulating paraffin in the chemical industry (Gokdemir and Dogan, 2011). Sepiolite deposits of the meerschaum type are primarily found in Turkey, Somalia, Tanzania, Kenya, and Mexico. Alongside high-quality, low-density, and highly porous meerschaum, Somalia also has sedimentary sepiolite formations. The total reserves of these deposits are estimated at around 50–100 million tons (Sariiz and Isik, 1995). Meerschaum, also known as “white gold” or “sepiolite,” is a unique mineral highly prized for its lightness, heat- resistant properties, and ability to be carved into intricate designs. Found predominantly in Eskisehir, Turkiye, meerschaum mining and processing have become significant contributors to the local economy and cultural heritage. This paper explores the history, economic importance, mining practices, and environmental impacts of meerschaum mining in Eskisehir and discusses the challenges and opportunities faced by the industry.

"DEFINITION OF THE REGION AND ITS BOUNDARIESTHE EXPOSED PART OF THE GRENVILLE PROVINCE is the southeastern part of the Canadian Shield, characterized by crystalline rocks with K-Ar ages of about 1,000 million years. Its Canadian portion is bounded on the southwest by Georgian Bay •and by Paleozoic sediments south of a line passing through Orillia and Kingston, on the southeast by the St. Lawrence River valley and the north shore of the Gulf of the St. Lawrence, on the east by the coast of Labrador and on the northwest by the Grenville front, a linear tec-tonic feature that is a metamorphic transition zone and/or a fault. Rocks located to the southeast of the front have younger K-Ar radiom€tric ages than rocks located to the northwest of it.The region is formed of complexly deformed and highly metamorphosed crystalline rocks and in part differs from other areas of the Canadian Shield by the presence of large amounts of crystalline limestone and bodies of anorthosite."
