In a process being investigated by the Bureau of Mines for recovering alumina from domestic nonbauxitic resources, calcined kaolinitic clay is leached with hydrochloric acid. Iron impurity in the clay is coleached and is removed in a solvent extraction step prior to crystallization of aluminum chloride hexahydrate, which is subsequently thermally decomposed to alumina. The FeCI3-HCl stripping liquor from the solvent extraction step is unsuitable for discharging to the environment; furthermore, economics requires recovery of the contained chloride values. In the present research, it was shown that the stripping liquor can be reacted with calcined clay to yield AlC13 in solution, plus precipitated iron oxides, residual silica, and unreacted excess clay as mixed solids. For the recovery of the AICl3 solution, the slurry could be separated or returned to the clay-HCI process stream at the solids washing step that follows primary HCI leaching of the clay. For the range 20° to 99° C, the time (t) (103 sec) required to react the waste liquor with excess clay, for essentially complete iron precipitation, depends on the absolute temperature (T) chosen, according to the expression t = e[(9.000/T) -23.5J. (1) Alumina was tried as a reagent alternative to clay but was not very effective, even under pressure and at high temperatures.

Sintering-pot tests and metallurgical performances of sinter with 4 kind of different Al2O3 contents are experimented in this paper. Results show: when the Al2O3 contents increase from 2.0% to 3.5%, acicular calcium ferrites in mine phase will be gradually replaced by plate-like iron calcium. The increase of Al2O3 contents will lead to the addition of liquid viscosity and the reduction of permeability of sinter bed. Sintering time will be prolonged. The rate of yield is stable basically but production is low; besides, the increase of liquid viscosity will decrease of drum strength. The change of permeability of the material layer will make RDI +3.15 decrease first and then increase when Al2O3 contents changed from 2.0% to 3.5%. RI of sinter shows a contrary trend because many open voids are formed by deterioration of liquidity first and then pores closed.

I) The Object of the Present Experiment. When the oxygen chemical potential in the gas phase is changed, the oxygen chemical potential in the liquid metal or in the liquid oxide phase will be subsequently changed. The object of the present experiment is to develop a method of measuring the change in the chemical potential of oxygen in liquid metals and in liquid oxides with respect to time, when the oxygen potential in the gas phase changes. II) The Experimental Method. As shown in the previous work1 of the authors, the electromotive force is determined by the difference in the chemical potential of oxygen at the vicinity of the interfaces between the solid electrolyte and the electronic conductors used for the two electrodes. Fig. 1 shows the two kinds of the cell assembly used to measure the change of the chemical potential of oxygen in liquid metals and liquid oxides with respect to time. The Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) is the largest tunneling program in the history of the metropolitan Chicago area (Figure 1). Between September 1976 and September 1977, rock tunnel contracts having an estimated cost of approximately $420 million will be advertised. During the past six months, the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago (MSDGC) has awarded contracts for 16.5 miles of rock tunnels in diam of from 9 ft to 30 ft having a total bid price of $120,261,750. RECENT CONTRACT AWARDS Addison-Wilmette Tunnel $63,140,480 Upper Des Plaines #20 Tunnel 35,749,664 Upper Des Plaines #21 Tunnel 21,371,607 Addison-Wilmette Tunnel The first contract was advertised in September 1975. This contract, described as the Addison-Wilmette Tunnel, runs from Wilmette Harbor at Lake Michigan under the North Shore Channel to Addison Street in the City of Chicago, a distance of 10 miles. The contract calls for constructing approximately 27,750 linear ft of 30 ft ID and 24,020 linear ft of 22 ft ID unlined rock tunnels, excavation of two construction shafts, and the excavation of 32 drop shafts of various diam. Two hundred ninety-three companies were notified of this contract being advertised, 70 companies took out contract specifications and 3 companies ultimately submitted bids. "The carbochlorination of several silica materials was carried out in the temperature range from 900 °C to 1200 °C. In this study, silica oxides and gaseous chlorine with carbon as reductant were used. The optimal carbon silica mole ratio in different temperature was calculated by Factsage software and the results showed that the optimal values are 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, 1.8 at 900 °C, 1000 °C, 1100 °C, 1200 °C, respectively. According to the experiments, the chlorination ratios of several silica materials were increased with temperature increasing. In the same temperature, the chlorination ratio of diatomite is the maximum and the chlorination ratio reaches 79%% when C/SiO2 reaches 3 at 1100 °C.1, IntroductionPolycrystalline silicon is the main material to manufacture the silicon polished section, solar battery[1] and high purity silicon wafers[2], also which is the most basic function material of semi-conductor industry, electronic information industry and solar photovoltaic battery industry[3]. A partial differential equation was developed and programmed to compute the cumulation and flow of the liquid phase of a gas-condensate fluid. It was found that such cumulation near the wellbore may attain saturations permitting liquid flow within periods of the order of 1 day. The radius at which this saturation obtains advances toward the external reservoir boundary with continued recovery, although it may move only 2 to 5 percent of that distance during the productive life of the well. This relatively high saturation can cause a serious dimunition in delivery capacity. The pressure dilferential required for flow of gas through a formation with such saturation may be as much as three times greater than the corresponding differential in a formation where saturation is less than 2 percent. Because of the radial geometry, total reservoir pressure differential required for flow with a zone of relatively high liquid saturation about the well was indicated to be two to three times greater than without the saturation. INTRODUCTION A computing program developed by the authors 1 to integrate the partial differential equation for transient radial flow of gas-condensate fluids required a prevalued function, W(Po) = kD(p0)/M(p0)z0(Po).......(1) related to cumulation of condensate in pores of the reservoir as pressure declines. Methods were available for relating mobility to saturation, saturation to liquid-vapor volume ratio, liquid-vapor volume ratio to pressure and, hence, mobility to pressure to obtain W(pD). However, certain assumptions had to be made in advance of program execution concerning movement of the liquid phase and change in radial distribution of liquid saturation as recovery progressed. Because reservoir fluid mobility and related pressure gradients are markedly dependent on liquid saturation, it was desirable to eliminate the necessity for these assumptions and in this respect improve the reliability of a result obtained by integration. Experimental research was begun to determine the relationship of variables that control the reservoir flow of low liquid-vapor ratio fluids. With the porous medium partly saturated, permeability to a two-phase flowing fluid could not be measured because the viscosity was unknown. Viscosity could not be measured without knowing permeability of the liquid-containing medium; but mobility, the ratio of permeability to viscosity, was measurable. This property, and liquid-vapor volume ratio of the flowing phases, have values determined by nature of the fluid and porous medium and, in addition, were found to be pressure, velocity and saturation dependent. A program developed by Kniazeff and Naville 2 for computing multicom-ponent, two-phase flow used polynomials to represent saturation dependence of permeabilities for gas and for liquid phases, and an effluent viscosity constant under reservoir conditions. The authors developed a program based on a partial differential equation of similar mass balance origin but designed to represent distribution of an unlimited number of components between gas and liquid phases utilizing the experimental information available as to variable dependence. Attention was given to liquid-vapor volume ratio of the flowing phases, a property which is essential as a liquid saturation boundary condition. A program for computing implicitly saturation increase at uniform intervals along the drainage radius was combined with an existing program for calculating pressures, and the two were used alternately in an iterative solution for both saturations and pressures. Two Rivers Platinum Mine (TRP) is a 55:45 joint venture between African Rainbow Minerals and Impala Platinum, respectively. TRP is situated on the farm Dwarsrivier 372KT, in the southernsector of the eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex. Dwarsrivier is underlain by rock formations of the Critical Zone (Winterveld norite-anorthosite) and the Main Zone (Winnarshoek norite-anorthosite). Two economically significant PGE-bearing layers namely the Merensky Reef and the UG2chromitite are found within the upper Critical Zone. These are approximately 140 m vertically apart, separated by a series of barren norites and anorthosites. At Two Rivers Platinum, only theUG2 chromitite layer is currently being mined for PGEs. The UG2 sub-outcrops north/south along the Klein Dwarsrivier river valley with a very gentle dip to the west of 7º?10º. At Two Rivers the UG2 averages about 120 cm in thickness, overlain by a waste pyroxenite parting about 20 cm thick, above which is a leader seam about 20 cm in thickness. The mineable cut consists of the leader seam, the waste pyroxenite parting, the UG2chromitite layer including 25 cm of pegmatoidal pyroxenite footwall, below the UG2 reef to a minimum of 185 cm trackless mining cut. The mining method is a mechanized bord and pillar layout, which will yield a total of 185 000tons at full run of mine production from the underground UG2 mine.

In an earlier communication, Ref. 1, the authors presented the tensile properties and the changes in crystal structure and microstructure for pyrolytic graphite tested at 2750°C. It was suggested that changes in the structure may have an effect on the tensile properties of this material. Accordingly, tensile tests were run on a series of specimens, from one block of pyrolytic graphite, some of which were hot-worked by being strained at 2750°C, others of which were tested in the as-deposited condition. According to the manufacturer, General Electric Co., the polycrystalline material was deposited at 2100°C on a substrate of synthetic graphite by decomposition of a dilute natural gas mixture. The as-deposited material had a density of approximately 2.19 g per cc, and as shown in Fig. 1 had a structure of medium size growth cones which were regenera-tively nucleated. All specimens had a gage section 0.75 in. long by 0.06 in. wide by 0.1 in. thick with the thickness direction perpendicular to the basal planes. The testing method and equipment used have been previously described, Ref. 2 and 3. For both the hot-working and the testing the load was applied parallel to the basal planes; a cross-head speed of 1.5 x l04 in, per sec was used. All heating was done in an atmosphere of bottled helium.

The original flotation reagents were certain oils selected for a combination of properties that occurred fortuitously. It was recognized quite early in the study of flotation mechanism that, in order to function, an oil must have an active group-one that differs from the remainder of the molecule in its affinity for water or the mineral particle. Wark4 gives credit for recognition of this elementary chemical principle to the senior author of this report.5 However, it was soon found that simple hydrocarbons could not be used as flotation reagents and that two of the functions, which were combined in the early flotation oils such as pine and eucalyptus, could be obtained in separate compounds and their relative intensity controlled to advantage. These two functions were called collecting and frothing.

"Interstitial free (IF) sheet steels are used for complex shaped parts because of their excellent formability. If a deep drawn part is subjected· to a impact deformation at low temperature brittle fracture of the part may occur. This phenomenon\ is called secondary work embrittlement (SWE). One possibility to characterize this material/structural behavior is the drop-weight test. The result of .this .test is a temperature at and below which a crack can initiated in a deep drawn part under the investigated set of parameters. This paper addresses the influence of the preforming process on the sus- . . ceptibili.ty of IF steels to SWE.IntroductionInterstiiial:free (IF-) steels are frequently used in the automotive industry for complex· shaped p·arts because of their excellent deep drawability. The microstructure of the steel consists of a highly ductile ferritic matrix with embedded precipitates of nitrides and/or carbides. Brittle fracture can occur in deep drawn parts, if they are subjected to a high speed deformation at lo""w temperature. This phenomenon is called ~econdary Work gmbrittlement (SWE) [1-11]. Up to now there are no standardized testing procedures available to quantify the sensibility of IF-sheet steel to SWE. Neveitheless, a reasonable testing procedure which allows to quantify the tendency of a predeformed part to SWE is necessary for further material development. A commonly used test method is the drop-weight test performed at low temperatures. In such ·tests a cone-like drop weight expands a deep drawn cylindrical cup [l-3, 6, 8, 9, 11]. From this expansion experiment the temperature is determined at and below which a brittle crack can be initiated in the deep drawn cup under the investigated impact test parameters. The highest measured temperature at which a deep drawn cup fails by brittle fracture is called frack appearances !emperature (CAPT). The lower the value of the CAPT the lower is the sensibility of a deep drawn part of IF-sheet steel to SWE. This paper aims to clarify the role of the preforming process on the impact behavior of an IF steel. For this purpose a numerical analysis of the deep drawing process and cup expansion tests are conducted."

INTRODUCTION In most uranium mines the concentration of uranium in the ore is low enough that inhalation of dust does not present a radiological problem. Conversely in the mills there is a potential inhalation hazard from inhaled uranium in concentrated form, namely "yellowcake" and other compounds intermediate between the ore and the final product of the mill. It was generally assumed that the solubility of yellowcake placed it in the category of Class D materials. This plus the fact that the uranium is non-enriched led health physicists to assume that the potential health hazards were a result of the uranium's chemical properties rather than its radiological properties. Bioassay programs have thus been limited to routine urine sampling at a weekly or monthly frequency. In most cases when a high reading was obtained, subsequent sampling within one or two days showed a rapid return to low levels, therefore tending to confirm the class D nature of the material. Two developments over the last few years have however suggested that modifications to this simple bioassay program may be necessary and practical. Firstly, a number of studies on the solubility of uranium mill products, from ore to yellow cake, in simulated lung fluid (Eidson A.F., Mewhinney J.A., 1980) have shown that some of the material is not class D, but class W or even Y. This raised the possibility that, while the urine levels rapidly decreased, indicating rapid excretion of the class D component, the W and Y components remained in the lung. Thus an unsuspected lung burden could have been accumulated. The second development, the ready availability of [in vivo] counting facilities with which to make direct measurements of uranium lung burdens, offered a means of confirming the hypothesis of unsuspected lung burdens. A study was therefore initiated to correlate lung burdens with urinary excretion. METHOD A total of 79 subjects from 3 uranium mills participated in the study. They were brought to the Ottawa laboratories of the Radiation Protection Bureau in groups of 4 or 6, over a period of several months. In Ottawa, [in vivo] thorax measurements were performed, and a urine sample collected. Each subject also brought with him a urine sample that had been collected the previous day. All samples were split, for analysis by both R.P.B. and the mill laboratory. [Concentrations of Uranium Dust] Results obtained by mills A, B and C for concentrations of uranium in air at various locations are given in table 1. Samples taken at mill B were obtained using continuous sampling with a midget impinger over a six hour period. Samples taken at mills A and C were 5-minute gravimetric samples. [Subject Selection] The subjects were selected to represent a wide range of work history in terms of both length of employment and type and location of job, as shown in table 2.

"In practice the advantages of high-quality hydrocyclone separation are often reduced due to varying feed suspension properties, solids concentrations and particle size distributions. Therefore, a new control system for a battery of hydrocyclones with a nominal diameter of 150 mm was developed for bentonite slurry regeneration associated with tunnel excavation using bentonite slurry as a transport aid and lubricant.As can be seen from Fig. 1, the hydrocyclone battery has been modified for regulation purpose. The battery was manufactured with an overflow collector as a closed pressure chamber (1) with a discharge pipe (2) where the throttling valve (3) was installed.With increased stepwise throttling of the overflow, the volume split is changed with the effect that the solids discharge in the underflow is increased. To stabilize the total throughput, the feed pump speed is simultaneously increased so that the pressure drop ?p across the hydrocyclones (9) remains approximately constant. However, this causes the increasing pressure inside the hydrocyclones, which results in a further intensification of the underflow discharge. After the detection of the break through of the air core (transition state) by the capacitive sensor (4), the throttle valve is shortly opened, and a new regulation interval can start again. The control concept is focused on maintaining the optimum operating state, characterized by the underflow discharge shape at the transition state between rope and umbrella discharge."

Permit quicker, safer clearance of hang-ups in the ore passes and chutes of underground mines. Approach Develop a device that can be operated from a safe distance to explosively propel a projectile into the hang-up. How It Works The Hang-Up Clearance Module, consisting of a stand, steel disk, explosive charge, and aiming device, is placed at a location convenient for line of sight aiming at the hang-up. This placement can be more than 100 feet from the target. Once aimed, the charge is remotely detonated, and the disk is converted by explosive force into a slug and propelled to the hang-up, bringing it down. The steel disk and an explosive charge are contained by a plastic casing. A small booster which is placed at the rear center of the explosive makes up the last component of the charge. Initiation is accomplished by standard means such as detonating cord or a number 8 blasting cap. When Initiated, a detonation wave travels through the explosive, inverting and consolidating the steel disk into a large slug. This slug is propelled at high velocity to the hang-up, delivering more than 5 million foot-pounds of energy on impact.

"The Blind shaft boring method is a mechanised process of excavating large diameter vertical shafts downward from the surface. It is a rotary drilling technique eliminating any requirement for personnel to enter the shaft or access underground workings during drilling and lining phases. Excavated material is delivered to surface carried by a flow of circulating fluid through the centre of drill rods. The drill assembly is suspended from a large A-frame rig and powerful winch at ground level providing vertical thrust to a hard rock cutter head. INTRODUCTION The Southern Coalfields Ventilation Shaft was constructed at a mine, 45 km north-west of Wollongong. The 5 m finished diameter (6.2 m drilled) shaft reaches a final drilled depth of 517 m, the deepest, fully lined blind bored vent shaft to date in Australia. Operated by a mining company in the Southern Coalfields, the expanding mine required a new ventilation shaft and associated surface infrastructure to service future operations. An assessment of future ventilation requirements for the coal seam operations identified a need to improve the capacity and reliability of the existing underground ventilation system in order to ensure a safe and efficient underground working environment. Installation of the new upcast ventilation shaft was determined to be the most cost effective and reliable solution to provide adequate ventilation for underground operations. The completed shaft is smooth and fully lined with steel/concrete composite liners that are hydrostatically sealed. The shaft lining is designed to meet the mine ventilation requirements for a service life of 20 years. The shaft intersects the top of the working section of the coal seam at approximately 513 m of depth. This includes the shaft collar depth and shaft bottom profiled intake section.PROJECT METHODOLOGY AND INDUSTRY BEST PRACTICE The shaft was drilled using the blind bore method, an innovative construction technique and an alternative to the traditional methods of sinking deep and large diameter shafts, such as raise boring and conventional drill and blast shaft sinking. The blind bore method allows the shaft to be drilled from the surface down without anyone having to enter the shaft or the mine during the construction process. This is by far the safest method of shaft construction and is especially suitable for difficult ground conditions where there may be unstable or water-charged strata. As this method involves drilling from the surface downward, shafts can be completed ahead of the underground mine development. Thus, allowing underground operations to focus on development and production without the conflicts of managing ventilation priority for underground contractors and mucking out spoil from excavation workings."

This report describes a computer-based model for estimating the tangible costs of injuries and deaths from work-related accidents in underground coal mines. The study undertook to identify and quantify the elements of accident costs, including field visits to coal mines, insurance carriers, and public agencies. The mathematical models developed for each tangible element of accident cost are presented in Volume I of the report. A listing of the computer programs which comprise the model and instructions for using the programs are presented in Volume II. Statistical distributions of mining family characteristics, data on 95 miners killed in underground accidents, and other basic data used to develop the model are presented in Volume III. Application of the model to a data base of 9,286 accidents which occured in underground bituminous coal mines during 1974 yielded a total of $56,900,000 in tangible costs to industry, mining families, and public agencies. Loss of income to the families of miners injured or killed in these accidents accounted for 47 percent of the total.

The purpose of the paper is to discuss socially sustainable development in the mining industry and the communities surrounding the mines. The discussions are based on results from a prestudy and literature review on mining and sustainable development conducted during 2013–2014 at Luleå University of Technology in Sweden. ‘A social licence to mine’ is important for the mining industry, but the social dimension is a relatively underdeveloped dimension when it comes to sustainable development in general and the mining industry in particular, one reason probably being the lack of effective methods for capturing social impacts. The mining industry and the surrounding communities face many challenges that provide both possibilities and obstacles to socially sustainable development; eg aspects such as gender, work conditions and cultural aspects. For example, a strong mining workplace culture and community identity can create strong cohesion but also lead to excluding certain groups, rejecting new ideas and reinforcing obsolete values. Other challenges include recruitment, as well as health and safety in relation to an increased use of fly-in-fly-out, contractors and automation of mining. Some challenges relate to the effects of fluctuations in the mining market. There is a lack of research that links attitudes, policies and activities within companies to their impact on the wider community, and vice versa. Future research should also include the development of methods and indicators for social sustainability relevant for mining – in other words: how do mining companies get ‘a social licence to mine’?CITATION:Abrahamsson, L, Lööw, J, Nygren, M and Segerstedt, E, 2015. Many significant events that began in 1990-91 continued to have a profound impact in the world minerals economy in 1992. The dissolution of the U.S.S.R. and the formal breakup of the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (CMEA) had significant effects far beyond the geographic boundaries of Europe and Central Eurasia. CMEA's network of economic interdependence had relied on central planning, a variety of subsidies, and barter agreements that allowed its members to function without the pressures of productivity and efficiency. In the mineral sector, many decisions had been made based on the need for military planning and technology competition with the market economy world. Because of inexpensive oil available through subsidies and technology assistance from the former U.S.S.R., industries III CMEA member countries had been able to function and maintain production to supply minerals and materials required to support the policies of the central plan. In 1992, most of the former CMEA countries decreased their output of many minerals. In some cases, the network of production that had been in place was severed. Political and economic instability, destruction of infrastructure, and new priorities were affecting other mineral industries in the area. In late 1991, 15 independent countries replaced the U.S.S.R. and in early 1991 the former CMEA countries found themselves trying to adjust to the realities of economic independence and the need to compete with former allies for survival. Although 11 of the 15 former Soviet republics joined in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in December 1991, in 1992, individual economic needs exceeded the needs of the Commonwealth III importance. As a result, new mineral trade patterns emerged as minerals were used as a source of much needed capital.

Many full-scale waterflooding operations are preceded by pilot floods, one purpose of which is to provide an estimate of recoverable oil. A laboratory model study was made to determine the influence of the producing wells' effective productivity on the oil recovery efficiency of single five-spot pilots, as well as single injection well pilot floods. The effective productivity is indicated by the value of Condition Ratio, defined as the actual well productivity to that of on undamaged and non-stimulated, normal-sized well in the same formation. The effects of initial gas satrcration and mubility ratio on recovery eficiency were also investigated in this model study. Model test results skowed that at favorable mobiliry ratios, a five-spot pilot flood can provide a direct quantitative estimate of the recoverable oil in the pilot area. If the pilot producer's Candition Ratio is 2.2 or more, upwards of 90 per cent of the recoverable oil in the pilot area is recovered from the inside producer, regqrdless of the mobility ratio or initial gas saturation. This Condition Ratio can be achieved with preyent fracturing techniques. Model studies also showed that over the range of imposed injection pressure differences and regional pressure gradients normally encountered in field operations, there was no effect on the recovery efficiency of a five-spot pilot waterflood. Model studies of single injection well pilot waterfloods showed that with no initial gas saturation, the total oil recovery at the offset producing wells can indicate the oil recovery possible by full-scale waterflooding. It is essential that the Condition Ratios of the offset wells be above 1.4. If an initial gas saturation exists prior to water injection, the recoverable oil cannot be directly evaluated by a single injection well pilot flood. However, the production per formance of such a flood can be used to provide information on volumetric sweep efficiency. INTRODUCTION Oil reservoirs are conlplex structures and cannot always be fully studied in the laboratory. Therefore, many operators consider it prudent to evaluate a waterflood prospect by means of a pilot flood. Pilot waterfloods generally involve one of two well arrangements: a single five-spot pilot waterflood, involving four injectors and an internal pilot producing well; and a single injection well pilot flood (sometimes called an inverted five-spot pilot) having one injector and four sur- rounding pilot producers. Some pilot floods are composed of multiple five-spot pilot patterns. To yield information applicable to field-wide performance, the pilot must be located in a representative portion of the reservoir. Pilot floods generally are conducted for one or more of the following reasons: (1) to determine whether water could be injected at desirably high rates, (2) to determine whether an oil bank or zone of increased oil saturation is formed by water injection, and (3) to estimate the oil recovery by waterflooding. Many of the early pilot water-floods were conducted for only the first two reasons. As soon as a buzz in oil production was obtained in the pilot, water injection was initiated throughout the entire lease or field. A number ot laboratory studies have been directed toward determining conditions under which a pilot flood could yield a quantitative estimate of the oil recovery possible by full-scale pattern flooding. One of the early studies of single five-spot pilot flooding' showed that well damage to the inside pilot producer could reduce the total amount of oil recovered. In a study of the single injection well pilot flood pattern,' the results indicated that if the model boundaries were no closer than a half-well spacing beyond the pilot pattern, the pilot performance in the laboratory is unaffected by these boundaries. In another study,? he effect of initial gas saturation and mobility ratio on the ratio of production to injection rate for various groupings of five-spot patterns was defined by mathematical and analog methods. In a study4 involving both potentiometric and flow model experiments at a mobiliry ratio of unity, four different pilot patterns were studied. These included a single five-spot, a single injection well pilot, a cluster of four single injection well pilots and six inverted five-spots. In this study the ratio of well diameter to the distance between injection and producing wells was held constant at 1:1000. The effect of the 7 ratio-—the ratio of the pressure drawdown at the producing wells to the pressure build-up at the injection wells on the pilot performance-was studied. The values of 7 ratio ranged from 0 to 0.34. Results showed that both the total oil recovery and the total fluid production from the pilot relative to the cumulative injection increased with increasing values of the 7 ratio. The effect of both the ratio of injection to producing rates and mobility ratio on the oil recovery performance of a liquid-saturated single five-spot pilot flood was studied in a series of flow model tests.5 Rate ratios ranged from one to four, and mobility rates ranged from 0.1 to 10. E. D. HYMAN*—How much sorting of scrap is done ? G. E. JOHNSON (author's reply)—We do practically no sorting. We charge "run of mine" scrap to the furnace. The unmeltables, mostly iron, are in such demand today that there is no difficulty in disposing of them. It may soon be desirable to sort out from the unmeltables as much of the brass as possible. J. J. BRUGMAN†—We have somewhat similar problems in the secondary aluminum business. What is your method of removing the unmelted material from the furnaces? Why have you such an apparently small space in which to charge your materials? Do you find that you have to seal that opening, or can you have it open and continuously charge at one end and pull out the other ? G. E. JOHNSON—Our means of melting scrap is efficient only to the extent that we use the waste heat from the vaporizing chamber to do the job. It is a batch process. We open the charge door and place the scrap on the hearth by hand shoveling. The door is then closed during the melting down period. After the melting is complete, the opposite door is opened and the unmeltables are raked out. The doors are approximately 3½ X 4½ ft and are not sealed during the process only closed. They are nominally tight. Some metal is oxidized in the process. We have visualized a means of conveying the materials through this melting unit with the metals that are melted trickling out during its travel. T. H. WELDON‡—Mr. Johnson, in line with the last question, is it necessary to seal the furnace between the melting down and the vaporizing unit, or have you got an inverted syphon in the bottom of the chamber? G. E. JOHNSON—That was one of the first things we encountered. We had to have a sealed opening, and it is a molten metal seal. You have indirectly asked me another question, which was: "Do you have to seal up the melting unit?" I would say we should exclude as much air as possible, although we are not too efficient in doing that. We allow the melting unit doors to be open when we charge and when we remove unmeltables. You can readily see that that would lead to the idea of having a controlled atmosphere in the melting unit, and I think this would do a more efficient job of melting the scrap. T. H. WELDON—How often do you charge the furnace? G. E. JOHNSON—We charge the melting unit, and rake out the unmeltables, about every hour. H. R. HANLEY*—Are any provisions made for controlling the rate of oxidation for the production of various size particles for certain characteristics of the zinc oxide product? G. E. JOHNSON—Yes, there are many. You are getting pretty much into the fine points of zinc oxide manufacture. Some of us still think we have something to learn about that. In general, this muffle furnace as I have described it to you produces a rounded particle of zinc oxide which is generally formed by a rapid oxidation of the zinc vapor, followed by rapid cooling. We have gone to the other extreme in some of our experiments. We have changed the furnace to produce a type of zinc oxide, such as we thought was peculiar to American process zinc oxide, by controlling the temperature at the point of oxidation and maintaining that temperature for a much longer period of time than we do when we make the rounded shape. There are other relationships that this furnace readily provides. One of the important factors is the ratio of air to zinc vapors. We can vary that by varying the air supply to the baghouse, or vary the rate at which we are vaporizing the zinc by the simple expedient of regulating the temperature over the carborundum arch. We have a number of variables that permit us to produce all of the grades of French process zinc oxide from lead-free up through the highest grades of seal oxides. There are many controls that we can apply to the operation. What I have said is but a brief condensation. K. MORGAN*—Can Mr. Johnson give us some idea of the fuel consumption of the furnace ? How much oil does he use per ton of zinc distilled? I am also interested to know what sort of heat transmission he gets through the arch? What is the thickness of the tiles used to construct the arch? Some time ago we built a small furnace for a different purpose, using a carborundum arch, and we found that the reflectivity of the molten zinc surface was so great we had to use a very high arch temperature. We found we made an improvement by having a layer of carbon on the surface of the zinc. Has Mr. Johnson had any experience on these points ? Does he make any sort of insolu-bles which he leaves in the furnace which he cannot tap out ? G. E. JOHNSON—I believe your first question was the fuel consumption. If I recall, somewhere in this paper there is a test that I quote. I believe we used 800 gal in a given period of time. Offhand I cannot translate that into tons of metal. I might also state that we have this understanding; that the carborundum arch, as the temperature becomes higher, becomes more efficient in heat transmission. As a matter of fact, I believe it is at about 2600°F or higher that the highest efficiency of heat transmission becomes available. We have calculations that I cannot quote from memory which indicate that the carborundum arch does a really very fine job for this type of furnace. Another point that we had considered was the fact that this furnace could be readily constructed so as to furnish an ideal source of heat for waste heat boilers. If a carborundum arch was used over the melting unit, we would have no zinc vapors in the gases at all— just clean combustion gases from which we would have removed some of the heat. L. P. A ground-water flow model was developed to simulate the postmining recharge rate from precipitation at the Belle Ayr surface coal mine, which is located in the Powder River Basin near Gillette, WY Wyoming state regulations require that reclaimed lands should provide a rate of recharge that approximates the premining rate. Steady-state calibration and transient simulations showed that the postmining recharge rate through spoil is at least 50 mm (2 in.) per year, exceeding the original infiltration rate of 4 mm (0.16 in.) per year to shallow overburden aquifers. Major reasons for the increase include the flat topography of the reclaimed areas and the decreased spoil density. It is expected that the backfill will disaggregate and settle over time, eventually resulting in a nearly constant recharge rate that is less than 50 mm (2 in.) per year but still somewhat greater than the premining rate.
