George W. Maynard, New York, N. Y.:—It is well known that there are many magnetite-mines of which the ore is too low-grade for direct use in the blast-furnace. For carrying out the sintering process, the preliminary step, in the case of magnetites, is the separation of the ore from the gangue by magnetic concentration. The resulting fine-grain product is very objectionable in the blast-furnace, and when used must be a very small percentage of the charge. The sintering process has saved the situation by furnishing a product which is absolutely ideal on account of its cellular structure. (In reply to questions by W. J. Tudor, and Joseph W. Richards, the following additional information was given by Dr. Maynard.) The percentage of iron in the product is determined entirely by the degree of concentration of the raw material and is practically not increased by the sintering operation. The magnetic concentrates at Port Henry and at the Benson and one or two other mines contain from 65 to 67 per cent. of metallic iron. The cost of sintering is from 39 to 41 cents per ton of product, including superintendence, depreciation, and repairs. The itemized figures are about as follows : Mixing (including labor), 24; power, 9; ignition, 5; repairs, 3; total, 41 cents. Prof. J. W. Richards, South Bethlehem, Pa.:—From a metallurgical standpoint I question the accuracy of the statement on p. 374: " C.—An increased reducibility of the iron so treated. (This has been conservatively estimated as 5 per cent. better than the best available ore.)" THE occurrence of concentration distributions in rapidly cooled castings with gradients of opposite sign to those expected on the basis of the constitution diagram and diffusion controlled kinetics, has long interested metallurgists. The work on inverse segregation to 1937 has been adequately reviewed by Vaughan, and to 1949 by ell-walpole. The general conclusion for unidirectional solidification, that the enrichment of the initially solidifying regions with lower melting point compositions is due to the flow-back along interdendritic channels of normally segregated residual liquid, has a very sound experimental basis. Perhaps the best experimental work and the most complete qualitative description of the process has been given by Adams.3 The authors accordingly assume the reader's understanding of the content of this paper. It appears that one of the principal deterrents to the complete understanding of the process has been the lack of an analytical description. Separation of dolomite from phosphate is the most challenging problem in phosphate mineral processing. Over 50% of the future phosphate reserve in Florida contains too much dolomite to process using the current industry practice. The current phosphoric acid production practice requires less than 1% MgO in the phosphate concentrate as the feed material. The Florida Industrial and Phosphate (FIPR) Institute has collaborated with worldwide experts in the field to address this issue. As a result, the industry is now offered three feasible options. Option 1 offers three methods for reducing MgO content in the concentrate from the Crago process, including adding a dolomite depressant in the rougher flotation step, dolomite flotation of the cleaner concentrate, and scrubbing the cleaner concentrate in quartz sand. These methods could reduce MgO content in the final concentrate by 20–40%. Option 2 involves crushing and grinding of high-dolomite phosphate pebbles followed by dolomite flotation at slightly acidic pH using a new collector that does not require phosphoric acid as a phosphate depressant, achieving a final concentrate analyzing less than 0.9% MgO at about 87% P2O5 recovery. Option 3 is a gravity separation technique using an innovative separation jig, and its full potential remains to be demonstrated.

"The Omega mine is in McVittie township in the Larder Lake area, Ontario. Production at the mine commenced in 1936, and, until the end of 1946, ore milled amounted to 1,558,604 tons, from which 207,074 oz. gold and 28,205 oz. silver, valued at $7,585,470, were recovered. The mine workings extend to a depth of 1,975 feet.GEOLOGYThe geology of the mine has been described in detail by C. P. Jenney (l) and the writer (2). The general geology and structure in the vicinity of the mine is discussed on an earlier page in this volume. The rock formations found in the mine workings are indicated on the accompanying plan and section (Figs. 1and2). They consist of an intermingled, south dipping complex of volcanics, sediments, and secondary talc-chlorite schists and carbonates. The carbonatized rocks, which are often referred to as 'dolomite' in the Larder Lake camp, are siliceous-carbonate replacements in the talc-chlorite schist zones. In places they contain green mica, probably fuchsite, and are cut by a stockwork of quartz veinlets and stringers. A stock of syenitic intrusives lies south of the mine workings.STRUCTUREThe main structural features are indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. The formations and orebodies have a pronounced southerly dip, which flattens with depth. The talc-chlorite schist and 'dolomite' zones are part of the Larder Lake fault or 'break' on which there appears to be very large displacement. Evidence throughout the district would indicate that the south side moved up and, in the case of the Omega mine, the thrust may have been distributed throughout the several intensely sheared zones. This slice faulting could account for the repetition of sediments and volcanics. An alternative possibility would be original interbedding of volcanics and sediments."

Using a nitrided fused-iron catalyst, the Bureau of Mines investigated the Fischer-Tropsch reaction in the oil-circulation process. The nitrided iron was quite stable and permitted the longest run obtained thus far in the oil-circulation process without the need for reactivating the catalyst--3,700 hours of operation. The effects of several operating variables--temperature, pressure, gas-recycle ratio, space velocity, synthesis-gas composition, and synthesis with and without reflux of oil to the reactor--on the production of oxygenates were studied. The importance of removing reflux oil and of high gas recycle in increasing the oxygenate content was shown. A finished gasoline containing 28 percent by weight alcohols was produced. The research octane number (RON) was 92.9 clear, increasing to 98.5 with the addition of one milliliter of tetraethyl lead (TEL). INTRODUCTION The Federal Bureau of Mines has been engaged since 1944 in a research and development program on the synthesis of gasoline from coal. Gasification of coal with steam and oxygen to yield a "synthesis gas"--a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen--is being investigated at Morgantown, W. Va., and the synthesis of gasoline by catalytically reacting carbon monoxide and hydrogen over iron by the Fischer-Tropsch reaction is being investigated at Bruceton, Pa.

The importance of coal as the major energy source has led to wider interest in the recovery of waste coal fines as a usable product. An additional incentive for fine coal recovery has been the increased emphasis on environ- mental pollution control and conservation of the nation's natural resources, Accordingly, a series of studies and tests were performed to investigate the feasibility of the recovery, concentration, balling and pelletizing of coal fines as a marketable adjunct to existing mining and beneficiation operations. These studies were conducted at the existing operations of the Eastern Coal Corporation at Stone, Kentucky, and the Metallurgical Laboratory of Arthur G. McKee & Company in Cleveland, Ohio. The purpose of the investigations was to recover the fines from the effluent waste waters of an existing preparation plant and transform them into a high carbon, low sulfur and ash product capable of being handled with a minimum of degradation and dusting problems. The fines were relatively high in ash content prior to processing, and flotation pretreatment served a combined function of beneficiation, recovery and water clarification, The minus 28 mesh coal concentrate containing 40 to 45 percent minus 325 mesh size material had an ash content varying between 5 and 7 percent and a sulfur content of less than 0.5 percent. Chemical and size analyses of the effluent and concentrated fines are presented in Table I for comparison.

The heavy oil reservoirs of Alberta and Saskatchewan include sequences of unconeolidated silts and fine sands which respond in an unusual manner when subjected to the high temperature and pore-fluid-pressure associated with steam injection and other thermal enhanced recovery techniques. Apparent transient connections are suddenly established between producers and injectore and there is an associated enhancement in oil (and sand) production. These phenomena have been attributed to local fluidization and piping processes which are known to occur in situations where high pore-fluid-pressures prevent the mobilization of intergranular friction. These breakdown processes may be associated with the penetration of tongues of the heated reservoir fluids with suspended sand into the creep sensitive intact reservoir since the viscosity ratios are sufficiently high for viscous fingering instability of the fluid-fluid interface. A program of laboratory tests has been carried out to measure the strength characteristic of saturated oil sands at a variety of temperatures and fluid pressures. These tests suggest, that in common with the coarser Athabasca sands, the Waseca sands have very little cohesive strength and show the characteristic dilational failure response of dense sands. Some special tests, devised to determine the relative ease with which samples can be fluidized, confirm the expected susceptibility of the fine- sand silts. Both piping and fluidization can be readily induced at in-situ reservoir temperatures and pressures. Analysis of stresses around wellbores suggests that fluid-pressure gradients may be sufficient to initiate piping and that backward erosion along streamlines may link producers and injectors. Such pipes may act as well “adits” gathering oil from the heated reservoir and contributing to enhanced production rates. Mechanical breakdown of the reservoir by drilling, injection and production processes provides a consistent possible explanation for the sand-cut response of production wells.

Os minérios limoníticos de níquel apresentam na sua composição metais como ferro, níquel e cobalto, sendo o primeiro o elemento majoritário. A presença majoritária de ferro prejudica a separação dos demais metais que possuem interesse comercial. Para remoção do ferro, técnicas hidrometalúrgicas são usadas. A extração por solventes é uma técnica com foco na separação seletiva de metais. Neste trabalho, foi preparada uma solução sintética baseada nas concentrações dos metais presentes na lixiviação de um minério limonítico de níquel. A solução foi colocada em contato com o extratante Cyanex 272. Este extratante é conhecido pela sua seletividade ao ferro em valores de pH próximos a 2,0. As amostras foram analisadas utilizando a técnica de Espectroscopia de Fluorescência de Raios X por Energia Dispersiva (EDX). Após concluídos os ensaios foi encontrado que durante a extração do ferro, o cobalto foi coextraído junto, mesmo em pHs entre 0,5 e 2,0, indicando que a presença do ferro altera o comportamento do cobalto.

Situated 45 miles west of Philadelphia and 50 miles southwest of Bethlehem Steel Company's Bethlehem plant, the integrated Grace mine facilities produce 4000 tpd of high-quality iron ore pellets. Startup of the Grace mill was in November 1958, and iron concentrates were shipped until March 1960, when the pellet plant went into operation. The underground mine, when fully developed, will hoist about 9000 tpd, including development rock. The crude ore, which has an iron content of approximately 42%, is magnetically cobbed and crushed in closed circuit with 3/4-in. slotted vibrating screens. The ore is washed and screened in the mill and the plus 1/4 in. screen product is again cobbed prior to feeding to the rod mills. Grinding is done in rod mills, and in ball mills that are in closed circuit with 30 in, cyclones, to 1% on 100 mesh and 65% minus 325 mesh. The ground ore is magnetically concentrated by three-drum permanent type finisher magnets to 67% Fe. The magnetite concentrate is pumped from the mill to a 50 ft thickener in the pellet plant. The thickened magnetite concentrate is relayed to the filters through a two-stage pump arrangement. The filter cake is fed by belt from filter concentrate bins to mixer-muller belts where it is intimately mixed with bentonite and a slight amount of water for moisture control. The fluffed concentrate then drops into balling cones. The green pellets from the balling cones are fed in a prescribed feed pattern to shaft furnaces through the use of shuttle car mechanisms. The green pellets are dried, heated to 2500°F and cooled to 1200°F as they descend through the furnace and into pellet coolers where the pellets are further reduced in temperature to 250°F. Heat is recovered in the cooling process through the use of air-to-air heat exchangers. The cooled pellets discharge on a rubber conveyor belt and are transferred to 6000-ton pellet railroad loading bin. The final pellet product consists of 90% plus 1/4 in. material (after tumble testing1) and contains 66% Fe plus 3% silica.

As part of the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association (AMIRA) P9 project, methods of characterising both the ore and the machines in flotation circuits have matured considerably over the past 15 years. Machine characteristics include gas dispersion measurements, such as bubble size, gas hold-up and superficial gas velocity. Ores can be characterised in terms of floatability parameters on a size and mineral basis. Measurements have been performed on various copper plants in many countries around the world over the last 5 years. This paper outlines the cell and ore floatability characteristics of each copper plant and provides a discussion on the differences between these plants. In general, most porphyry copper ore bodies are processed at high tonnage through several parallel banks of cells at each stage of flotation. The floatability parameters of these copper ores are very similar in terms of rate of flotation and proportion of fast, slow and non-floating material. The cell characteristics are also similar, with superficial gas velocity, bubble sizes, and gas hold-up values being of similar magnitude. Investigation of the similarities and differences of the modem copper flotation circuits has allowed an increase in understanding of the particularities of copper flotation. Comparison against other copper circuits provides a benchmark and opportunities for future optimisation.

"Pressure oxidation (POX) is one of the most common and reliable methods of processing gold-bearing sulfide concentrates. However, when processing concentrates that contain natural carbonaceous matter, substantial gold losses occur due to autoclave preg-robbing. The latter involves formation of gold chloride complexes under typical POX conditions (high temperatures, high acidity and high ORP) and subsequent sorption of these complexes by carbonaceous matter. Naturally, chloride ion plays a significant role in the process of autoclave preg-robbing; its concentration in POX solution has a well-marked effect on subsequent gold recovery during cyanidation of POX residue. The previous research done by SRC Hydrometallurgy showed that autoclave preg-robbing of gold could be significantly inhibited by the addition of mercury(II) compounds to POX slurry. The positive effect of mercury(II) was well pronounced both at high (>20 mg/L) and low (<5 mg/L) Cl concentrations in POX solution. The successful bench-scale laboratory testing was followed by pilot plant trials at Ore Test Facility in Blagoveshchensk, Russia. The present paper provides the results of these trials. The bench-scale testing results were verified; the optimum oxidizing parameters and reagent dosage were specified. The behavior of mercury (II) at POX pilot plant was found to be in good consistency with industrial practice described in the literature.INTRODUCTION Pressure oxidation (POX) is one of the most common, reliable, and commercially proven methods of processing gold-bearing sulfide ores and concentrates. However, when processing double refractory materials that contain natural carbonaceous matter, POX technology advantages are compromised by autoclave preg-robbing of gold. The latter occurs when natural organic carbon and soluble halides are both present in autoclave feed. Strongly oxidizing conditions of POX (high temperature, oxidation-reduction potential or ORP, and acidity) favor formation of gold-halide (mostly, gold-chloride) complexes, which tend to bond with carbonaceous matter. The exact nature and mechanism of this bonding is unknown, but as the result of this, cyanide is unable to leach gold from POX residue and the precious metal is lost to the tails (Axenov et al., 2014; Dimov, Chryssoulis, & Sodhi, 2003; Fomenko, Zaytsev, Pleshkov, Chugaev, & Shneerson, 2013)."

The past decade has seen a renewed possibility of using machine learning algorithms to solve a large collection of problems in several fields. Data acquisition for mining operations has increased with the growth in sensor-based technologies, and therefore the amount of information available for mining applications has dramatically increased. Ore sorting equipment is available for separating ore from waste based on differences in physical properties detected by a real-time analyser. The separation efficiency depends on the contrast in these properties. In this study we investigate the application of machine learning models trained using data from the output of a dual-energy X-ray ore sorting apparatus at a gold mine. The particles were first hand-sorted into ore and gangue classes based on their mineralogical composition. Classification models were then used to help decide the balance between the number of true and false positives for ore in the concentrate, with a view to economic parameters, using their receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curves. The results showed AUC (area under the ROC curve) scores of up to 0.85 for the classification models and a maximum reward condition Fpr/Tpr around 0.5/0.9 for a simplified economic model.

The Ti-Al-V system has been delineated from 50 to 100 wt pct Ti and front 600 to 1400°C by X-ray and ntetallographic techniques. Isothermal sections were delineated at 600, 700, 800, 900, 1000, 1100, 1200, 1300, and 1400°C. X-ray and metallographic evidence indicated the presence of two phases and in addition to those reported by previous investigators of the ternary system&apos;-3. T HE titanium-rich region of the Ti-Al-V system as originally proposed by Rausch et UZ, and Jordan and Duwez3 was based on the binary Ti-Al diagram as proposed by Bumps et uZ. As additional phases have been shown to exist5-&apos; in the region previously thought to be all a, the titanium-rich region of the Ti-Al-V system is open to serious question. Therefore, in order to determine the effect of the indicated changes in the Binary Ti-Al system on the ternary Ti-Al-V system the present investigation was initiated. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experimental procedures in this investigation are the standard techniques used in the study of titanium-alloy systems which have been described in detail previously.1° Consequently, only details pertinent to the present work are discussed. The alloys employed for the delineation of this system were prepared from titanium obtained from the Bureau of Mines (73 BHN) 99.99 pct Al and 99.7 pct V, by the consumable arc-melting technique. The titanium was premelted into buttons of 25 g because spattering during the first melt caused uncontrollable loss of alloying constituents. Typical analyses of the material used have been reported elsewhere Attempts to hot roll the alloys prior to heat treatment were made on the first series of alloys prepared, but as the area of extensive hot workability was fairly restricted, see Table I, this practice was discontinued. The times of isothermal annealing are given in Table 11. A preliminary heat treatment of 96 hr at 1000°C was used prior to heat treatment at lower temperatures. The standard techniques used for polishing specimens involved belt-grinding, grinding on emery paper, polishing electrolytically, and etching with Remington "A" etch. In the low-alloy region it was found that the oRo etch, developed by Ence and Margolin,o gave better contrast between phases. Where this procedure did not differentiate between phases clearly, the method of stain etching developed by Ence and was used. It has been previously reported15 that filing of titanium alloys is not desirable for producing X-ray powders, since the powder becomes contaminated by the file material. Therefore, for those samples not brittle enough to Crush, the procedure described below was used. The specimen was wrapped in molybdenum sheet and placed in a vacuum system and evacuated to 0.03 p. Palladium-pur if ied hydrogen was then admitted to the system until a partial pressure of 5o Cm of H was reached. The specimen was heated in the system to the temperature of original heat treatment and was slowly cooled over a period of 3 hr to 400°C while the partial pressure of hydrogen was maintained. The sample was removed from the system after it had completely cooled and was crushed to a powder of 230 to 270 mesh. The powder, wrapped in molybdenum sheet, was dehydrogenated at the temperature of original heat treatment until a partial pressure of 0.03 p was maintained in the system for at least 1/2 hr. The details, however, and especially those relating to shaft dimensions, have had to meet a great variety of conditions, and show no uniformity whatever. Selecting a few of the present day Western plants, we find furnace lengths varying from 12.5 to 87 ft., widths at tuyere level from 42 to 84 in., and heights above tuyeres from 5 ft. 4 in. to 22 ft. 4 in. ; and comparing present designs with those of the past, we meet contrasts no less striking. Unlike its transverse section, the length of a furnace has come to depend rather on the size of unit desired than on the requirements of smelting ; and if the question of length be ignored, several of the various existing designs can be grouped together on the basis of a common transverse section. This section, having a width at tuyere level of 56 in. and a height above tuyeres of 18 ft., was developed at Great Falls, and the story of its development contains some interesting features. Ground was broken for the Great Falls works in the spring of 1891. Gold was discovered in the Bendigo area of Victoria in 1851 (Willman and Wilkinson, 1993), and all the early gold mining of any note involved washing (puddling) the gold out of the regolith or alluvium. The waste material from this process was a semi-fluid mixture of rock debris, soil and water, referred to as `sludge&apos;. Puddling machines were gradually introduced to speed up the puddling process (Cole, 1994), and by 1855 an estimated 2000 machines were in the district (Anderson, 1978). In 1859 it was estimated that approximately 2 293 000 m3 of material was puddled annually by the machines on the eastern side of the goldfield, whose waste drained into Bendigo Creek and its tributary gullies. It was also estimated that after the gold was removed, approximately one-quarter of the residue/sludge consisted of the heavier, coarse-grained material which settled out fairly quickly, while the remainder, approximately 1 720 000 m3, was the fine-grained material which flowed downstream for some distance (VPP, 1859 - 60). From these figures it can be assumed that for the ten years during which this volume of puddling was maintained (1854 - 1864) over 5 700 000 m3 of gravels and sands and 17 200 000 m3 of fine-grained sludge had been discharged into and around Bendigo Creek. This was enough to cover an area of over 400 km2 to a depth of 5 cm. By 1859 the problems associated with the sheer volume of sludge being discharged were such that a Royal Commission was appointed to `Enquire into the Best Method of Removing the Sludge from the Gold Fields&apos; (VPP, 1859 - 60). The goldfields referred to were those in the Bendigo area around the township of Sandhurst (now known as Bendigo). The Report of the Commission (VPP, 1859 - 60) stated that: `... inspection of the country bordering upon the course of the Bendigo Creek, to a distance of about fifty miles from Sandhurst . . . &apos; had revealed that the sludge had &apos; . . . filled up watercourses and flooded pasture lands . . . &apos;. It also noted that &apos; . . . even on the plains, thirty or forty miles away from Sandhurst, where the sludge flows thin, and is relieved from its heavier particles, we found it baked into a perfect concrete, and in thicknesses varying up to two feet or more . . . &apos;. The italics were used for emphasis in the original text. As it was considered unlikely that the physical evidence for such widespread inundation would have disappeared completely over the intervening 130 or so years, a project was initiated to locate any evidence of the inundation in the current landscape. If such evidence were to be found, then an estimate could be made of both its extent and its effects on the topography, drainage, and land-use of the inundated area. Extensive field work has determined that over 700 km2 to the north of Bendigo was inundated by the sludge. The area has not been uniformly covered, but has occasional `inliers&apos; which have obviously escaped inundation by being slightly higher than the surrounding areas. Today the sludge is readily identified as a very fine-grained, hard-setting, concrete-like `capping&apos; overlying a well-developed, well-structured, pedal horizon, or in some instances, the gravels and sands of a creek bed. The thickness of the sludge capping varies between a few centimetres and three metres (Peterson, 1996). Dorreh barite mine located in the central part of Iran is one of the largest barite mines, in the country. The mine is subdivided into three blocks, which are called block 1,2,3 according the barite quality. In the central part of each block, a heavily concentrated grid of exploratory drill holes have been drilled and the reserves of area was calculated based on these holes, some years ago. It was decided to compute the reserve of the area by geostatistical methods, in the form of an M.Sc. project. In order to study the area, three regionalized variables including density, thickness and density-thickness (accumulation) was studied and the spherical variograms were fitted to these variables. These models were evaluated by cross-validation method. The optimized block size was chosen in order to compute the reserves by kriging method. The reserves of explored parts of each block of mine was calculated and the results were extended to the whole area of the blocks. The reserve of the explored parts and the total reserve of the area were calculated to be 96,000t and 1,670,000t respectively.

In spite of the fact that the percentage of true colloids in an ore grind is very small,&apos; these pulps exhibit many of the properties of true colloidal suspensions. A quartz particle, appreciably finer than 10 microns in diameter, has a settling rate so low that at a dilution of 5:l or over, the capacity of a settling tank to settle such particles would be uneconomical if the individual particle rate prevailed. However, by grouping the finer particles into aggregates or flocs, the settling rate can be increased to an economical value. The colloidal chemistry of pulp thickening is thus chiefly concerned with particles having diameters of between 1 and 10 microns, although particles as coarse as 40 microns in diameter are more or less involved. These particles must be associated in such a manner that they settle at an economical rate and give a clear, supernatant liquid or overflow. The treatment of the subject may be divided into three phases, cach phase having a more or less different colloidal aspect. The first phase is the problem of getting the pulp or suspension into the proper condition of flocculence; the second is the behavior of the flocculent pulp in its initial and intermediate stages of settling; the third is the behavior of the flocs in the find period of settling or thickening stage. Let us look first into the methods and mechanism of obtaining the flocs and then consider their behavior and properties. Flocculation Colloids are merely ordinary substances reduced to a very small particle size, the upper limit being placed by definition at 1 micron (0.001 mm.) diameter by the soil chemists and at from 0.2 to 0.1 micron by various other colloid chemists. The lower limit is reached only when the particles approach molecular dimensions. The term L&apos;colloid" should not necessarily imply lack of crystallinity. Particles as small as 0.01 to 0.02 micron give perfect X-ray patterns, while with 0.005 micron particles the bands on the powder photograph are merely broaderled and diffused.2

An atmospheric ammoniacal thiosulphate leach system was developed to recover gold and silver from residues of the ammoniacal oxidation leaching of sulphidic copper concentrates. Extractions of 88 - 95% Au and 83 - 98% Ag were attained within 2 to 4 hours at 40 - 60°C in thiosulphate leaching of the oxidation leach residues of Manitoba chalcopyrite concentrates analyzing 24.6% Cu, 0.18 oz/ton Au and 4.26 oz/ton Ag and a complex British Columbia chalcopyrite/tetrahedrite concentrate analyzing 18.5% Cu, 0.27 oz/ton Au and 276 oz/ton Ag. Parameters affecting the Au and Ag solubilization included thiosulphate, ammonia, and cupric ion concentrations, temperature, retention time and the degree of Cu extraction and sulphide oxidation in the primary oxidation leach. The precious metals were recovered from the thiosulphate liquors by zinc dust cementation.

. There seems to be a well-established belief that there is an indescribable something in the appearance of gold-quartz not to be learned from books, that enables those who are fortunate enough to have acquired the power to recognize this characteristic, to pronounce at once that a certain quartz will or will not pay. The stronger this claim is made, the more certain is the claimant to be one of the self-styled practical miners. After several years spent among the gold-mines of California with practical and professional gold-miners, I have come to the conclusion that very few care to risk an opinion on a piece of quartz until some of it has been "horned out." Nevertheless, there is what the miners call a " kindly " appearance, that is more often followed by good results than is a vitreous, water-wet-looking quartz. A dark, resinous quartz seems to be most in favor, but there are so many exceptions that even quartz as " white as a hound&apos;s tooth " produces gold in some mines.. The ribbon-quartz, a laminated variety, separated by thin talc or chlorite partings, has a well-known good name. The slides of rich quartz specimens show that this parallelism is a microscopical characteristic of the only macroscopical distinction that, as a rule, these quartzes show. This is shown by Nos. 12 and 13, photographs of the richest quartz, that averaged $65 per pound. It is noticeable, also, in Nos. 7 and 9, and others. Dr. Hensoldt, of Columbia College, who prepared, excellently, a large number of my slides, and whom I have to thank for descriptions and suggestions, says of Nos. 12 and 13: "This variety of quartz differs considerably, microscopically, from the others of your locality, and is, in more than one respect, remarkable.
