The heap leaching of oxide copper ores with copper cathode recovery by solvent extraction and electrowinning is now well established as a low-cost method of copper recovery. The main purpose of this study was to extract copper from the copper low-grade oxide ore of Chodarchaei mine using column leaching. The copper oxide ore contained 1.1% Cu and 1.75% Fe. The mineralogical analysis indicated the malachite (Cu2(OH)2CO3) was mainly composed of oxidized phases. The sulfuric acid leaching experiments were performed under the laboratory conditions. The influence of several parameters on the course of the reaction such as particle size, acid concentration, flow rate, and time was examined. The optimum collective extraction of copper and iron was obtained at a particle size of +10-15 mm for a leaching duration of 3 days with sulfuric acid concentration of 100 gpl and using a flow rate of 2.5 cc/min. Under these conditions, the recovery of copper and iron were 98.54% and 41.99%, respectively. Keywords: column leaching, copper, iron, working diagram.

The graphitizing reaction has been studied in a number of Fe-C-Si alloys in the temperature range 550° to 725°C. The TTT relationships exhibit "C" curve behavior except where nuclei, either foreign or graphite itself, are present before the start of the reaction. It is suggested that the rate -controlling process is diffusion of carbon through ferrite. For the reaction to proceed at the observed rate it is calculated that the matrix surrounding the particles must deform plastically; experimental evidence for this deformation is presented. It is well-established that the decomposition of austenite to pear lite occurs at a maximum rate at an intermediate temperature.l-5 This "C curve" be- havior, which has been reported in a number of other systems,5-10 is a consequence of the relatively low rate of nucleation of the pearlite at small degrees of undercooling of the austenite. The cemen-tite phase in the pearlite is, in turn, metastable with respect to graphite and if steels are held for prolonged periods at elevated temperatures decomposition of the pearlite occurs. It is difficult to predict the shape of the subcriti-cal graphitization TTT (time, temperature, transformation) diagram for, in this case, undercooling does not occur. However, the free-energy change for the reaction does decrease with increasing temperature" (Fig. 1) and it is thus anticipated that the rate of nucleation will fall as the temperature approaches that of the eutectoid. In addition, a decreasing growth rate with increasing temperature is predicted in some circumstances with pure Fe-C alloys. "The permeability of sintering mix is a vital technological property in sintering process. However, it can only be measured by off-line method on samples picked from the production. In order to acquire the properties of sintering mix accurately, on-line measuring of permeability is urgently required. Based on the reflection characteristics of bed permeability on pipe flowing parameters, a new method is presented in this paper for on-line measuring of sintering mix permeability. The measurement can be performed by blowing gas flow in the bed with the measuring pipe. Measuring results are obtained by picking the data on flowing rate and pressure in the pipe. The function of flowing rate to pressure may be certain for samples with the same permeability. Thus, the permeability was determined by contrasting this function to the result of off-line measuring, and the relative coefficient or R2 value was more than 99%.IntroductionThe permeability of sintering mix is a vital technological property in sintering process, which directly determines production and quality of sinter, or even determines whether the sinter production is carried out smoothly [1,3].The permeability have more obvious influence on vertical sintering speed, which is mainly related to air quantity passing through material bed. Low permeability may make burning through point of sintering move back, and the sinter mix cannot be burnt through. High permeability may make burning through point of sintering move forward, improving production efficiency by increasing the speed of sintering machine [4] Good permeability means a small resistance of fan ,reduction of negative pressure of sintering machine, and full contact between air and sulfide, which can strengthen physical-chemical reaction during sintering process and increase desulphurization rate. In gas well through material layer process, gas-solid desulfurization reaction and gas-solid-liquid heat exchange are completed and hot gas through the combustion zone supplies the sintering process with heat. Finally uniform sintering of the material layer in height and width direction is achieved [5] While high permeability index leads to weak sinter strength, fast sintering speed, short residence time of high temperature region and little liquid phase. Moreover, liquid phase in the fast cooling process is too late to fully crystallize but forming glass phase which is harmful to sinter strength as well. Bad permeability means a big fan resistance and increase of negative pressure of sintering machine, which make the air pass through material layer difficultly. When air and mix contact difficultly, removal of sulfide reduces so that desulfurization is incomplete. Meanwhile, low caking efficiency, slow sintering speed and easily burnt sinter , reduce sinter output. Therefore appropriate permeability of sintering mix is the premise of stable burning through point and satisfactory sinter output and quality."

The Bureau of Mines sponsored a study of the impact of changing technology on the demand for metallurgical coal and coke to 1985. Individual technologies were analyzed to determine what effect each had on the demand for and the consequent consumption of metallurgical coal and coke in the steel industry. The domestic steel industry demand for metallurgical coal and coke for the production of hot metal will probably increase through 1985. Formcoke if implemented on a worldwide basis could begin to supplant the U.S. export market for metallurgical coal. The major technologies that have contributed to the decline in demand for metallurgical coke per ton of hot metal are (1) the increased usage coupled with higher iron content of agglomerates, (2) modification of blast furnace practices such as high top pressures and blast temperatures, and (3) increases in the injection of supplemental fuels. The projected demand for metallurgical coal and coke under current technology for 1985 are 109.4 and 76.0 million tons, respectively. With future technology implemented, the demand for metallurgical coal and coke will be 82.0 and 56.9 million tons, respectively. The projected domestic demand for metallurgical coke could further decrease by as much as 15 to 20 million tons by 1985 if formcoking proves technologically and economically feasible.

Rogers and Van Wagenen, the most critical point relating to the future of the industry has been summed up in the last paragraph: when nitric acid can be produced synthetically cheaper than from the Chilean deposits, the Chilean industry will cease. A study of the prevailing mining methods and extraction process leads one to suspect that much can be done to reduce the present cost of the finished product; and a reasonable reduction of the cost would make available immense reserves of low-grade caliche, the locations of which are fairly well delimited. In a study of costs, one finds that actual data are very hard to procure. The average operator does not know, with any degree of reliability, his "head assay," what percentage of the caliche is lost in mining, nor what tonnage of caliche he is putting into the maquina. One manager remarked to me, "We are not concerned in what it costs to treat a ton of caliche, we are interested only in what it costs to, produce a quintal of' finished nitrate." Apart from the crude methods of mining, and the inefficient work in extraction, attention is at once drawn to the fact that the 40d., stated as the cost of the nitrate at the plant, has become 80d. by the time it is on board ship. At the turn of the century the U.S. had a gross ALVIN KAUFMAN Mineral Economist U.S. Bureau of Mines area slightly in excess of three million square miles, a population of 76 million, a gross national product of $37 billion (constant 1929 dollars) and a mineral production valued at $2 billion (1929 dollars). Some 60 years later its area had increased by 600 thousand square miles, population had risen 140%, gross national product was seven times greater and mineral production had grown to a value five times that of 1900. Of perhaps greater significance, however, were the changes wrought by technology. It was during this period that the "American Way of Life" was revolutionized by the introduction of the airplane and the automobile; man also took his first probing steps in the utilization of nuclear energy and pre- pared to unlock the secrets of space. It was during these six decades, also, that he learned to create additional new materials, some of which were from old sources such as plastics from petroleum and coal. These new materials have created competition and attendant problems for the traditional materials such as iron, copper, lead and zinc. Additional problems undoubtedly will be created by technologic advances in the future.

"The Barrage des Quinze dam is a concrete sluice dam consisting of 19 spillway sections, each of which is approximately 7.6 metres wide and 14.5 metres deep. Rehabilitation efforts being performed on the dam including demolition and improvement of the roadway and spillway sections and grouting to mitigate underseepage. Initially, conventional cement grouting was attempted and was successful in 14 of the spillway sections, but unsuccessful in 5 of the sections due to the high water flows which washed the grout away. The removal of the roadway and portions of the piers during construction temporarily reduced the stability of the structure limiting grouting pressures that could be applied. This and the substantial high water flows (leakage) beneath the dam between the concrete/rock contact and within fractures in the upper rock formation created a challenging situation to create a cutoff.A grouting solution was developed that involved implementing several different grouting methods and materials including balanced high mobility grouts (HMG); low mobility grouts (LMG); polyurethane grouts; and sodium silicates. Because of the critical scheduling for the work, multiple approaches were planned and made available on site so that the work could proceed with the best technology with little, if any, time loss. The end goal of the grouting program was to create a seepage cutoff beneath the 5 sections of the dam in a stepwise process. The initial step was to fill the large openings and create a grout barrier to reduce the high water flow. The second step was to seal the contact between the base of the dam and the bedrock; and the third step was to complete closure by grouting a deep grout curtain into the underlying rock. Other features of the work included an extensive grout mix testing program, water pressure testing, borehole camera survey, and monitoring of the grout injections."

During fiscal years 1967-68, the Bureau of Mines produced 185 technical papers and reports about petroleum and oil-shale research, which were published either by the Bureau or by others as referable scientific literature. Numerous other reports were prepared for Government agencies, State agencies, and organizations of the petroleum and natural gas industry engaged in cooperative research programs with the Bureau. Research performed during the reporting period by the Bureau on petroleum, natural gas, and oil shale was classified by 71 active projects. A basic appropriation of $3,575,000 was supplemented by $1,300,000 in fiscal year 1967, and that of $4,043,000 by $1,402,000 in fiscal year 1968, making the appropriated-to-supplemental fund ratios about 2.8 to 1 for fiscal year 1967 and 2.9 to 1 for fiscal year 1968. In fulfillment of the mission of the Bureau, through planned research programs, methods for producing and utilizing petroleum were improved. The continued conservation of this natural resource of petroleum, including crude oil, natural gas, and oil shale, was pursued through research performed by some 350 personnel at two petroleum research centers and two petroleum research laboratories supervised and supported by administrative personnel of the Bureau and the Department of the Interior.

The electrical resistivities of aluminum alloys containing CU, Ge, Zn, Ag, Cd, and Mg were found to increase linearly with the atomic percentage of the solute atoms. Application of Linde's rule to these data suggests that each aluminum atom contributes 2.5 electrons to the metallic bond. ALTHOUGH aluminum invariably exhibits a Jt\. valence of three in ionic solids, it does not follow necessarily that its valence in the metallic state is also three. As a matter of record, many properties suggest that the number of bonding electrons in metallic aluminum is less than three. For example, as shown in Fig. 1, the atomic radii1 of the metallic elements in the solid state decrease with increasing atomic number at the beginning of any one period. The atomic radius of aluminum, however, is greater than that which would result from a regular decrease in atomic radius with increasing atomic number, suggesting that the number of bonding electrons in aluminum is somewhat less than three. Correlated with the anomalously large atomic radius of aluminum is its abnormally low melting temperature. As the atomic numbers increase in any one period, the melting temperatures of the metallic elements increase.' As shown in Fig. 2, however, the melting temperature of aluminum (13) is only slightly greater than that of magnesium (12). Again the number of bonding electrons in metallic aluminum appears to be nearer two than the expected value of three. In addition Ageev and Ageeva3 alculated the electron density distribution in the aluminum lattice. A comparison of such electron density curves for various assumed valence states of aluminum with experimentally determined curves suggests that the actual number of bonding electrons in metallic aluminum is between two and three. Hume-Rothery and Raynor', " have suggested that the above-mentioned abnormalities are associated with the overlapping of the Brillouin zones of metallic aluminum when it is in the usual face-centered cubic structure. The importance of the number of bonding electrons in metals has been extended recently into the field of mechanical properties. While formerly it was thought that the plastic properties of alpha solid solutions were primarily dependent upon the lattice strain induced in the solvent by the solute, it is now known that the difference in the number of bonding electrons of the solute and solvent also has its influence on the plastic properties."1' In order to achieve a satisfactory correlation of the effect of alloying elements on the plastic properties of aluminum alloys,"'T however, it was necessary to assume that the number of bonding electrons contributed by aluminum was about two rather than the expected value of three. It appeared to be desirable, therefore, to seek other criteria for evaluating the number of bonding electrons contributed by aluminum to its alpha solid solutions, especially in view of the practical as well as the theoretical importance of the effect of valency on the plastic properties. Norbury' was perhaps the first to illustrate that the increase in resistance of alpha solid solutions is associated with the differences in valence of the solute and solvent metals. Ceramic projectiles made from 94% to 99% alumina with a nominal mass of 3.1 gms were fired into granite blocks. The average compressive strength of the ceramic was 800 MPa and that of the rock was 135 MPa. Flat, ogive, conical and pyramidal nose shapes were evaluated at velocities ranging from 450 to 1400 m/sec. It was found that the conical and pyramidal nose shapes at the higher velocities did a significant amount of damage to the rock. On the average, they removed 10 5mm3 of rock and were six and ten times better than the flat and ogive nose shapes. It was also observed that increases in volume occur in discrete steps. This process is highly dependent on the ability of the projectile to penetrate the rock.

The Plant. The annual production of the Pyhasalmi mine is 900 000 tons of copper- zinc-pyrite ore containing approximately 0.7 % Cu, 2.5 % Zn and 30 % S. During 1976...1981 altered surface ore, 850 000 tons in all, was also treated at the concentrator. The surface ore was crushed and ground in a separate plant and was then fed into the copper or zinc flotation or was flotated in its own circuit, depending on the degree of alteration and the content of copper and zinc in the ore. The surface ore was exhausted in October 1981. Flotation comprises three consecutive flotation circuits; copper, zinc and pyrite circuit. The zinc circuit includes an open circuit roughing and scavenging. The scavenger concentrate and cleaner tailing are pumped to the middlings flotation. Rougher concentrates of the open circuit and the middlings flotation are pumped to cleaning which includes four stages. Figure 1 describes the flowsheet of the zinc circuit.

The treatment of oxidized residues of zinc with high iron content continues to present a technical challenge in both the steel and zinc industries. Two main problems are commonly identified and include high treatment costs and environmental concerns about contaminated, iron-bearing residuals. A new approach to this problem is described in which selective separation of the iron and zinc into salable products may be potentially feasible. The waste material is first leached to give a solution having an approximate concentration of 110 g/l Zn, 15 g/1 Fe and 40 g/1 H2SO4 and other impurities such as Pb, Cd, Cu and Sb. A suitable organic, such as D2EHPA, is used to load the majority of the iron. The aqueous phase is then acceptable for zinc electrowinning after standard solution purification. The novel step in the flow sheet is the efficient recovery of the ferric iron from the organic solvent using a solid metal to reduce the iron to the ferrous state. The Fe+2 is easily stripped into an aqueous phase in a relatively pure form, suitable for use in water treatment. Process parameters and possible flow sheet designs are described and discussed.

Mantoverde is a heap leach-SX-EW plant that was commissioned in December 1995 at a production rate of 42,130 tonnes of copper per year and 5.4 million tonnes of ore per year. Copper production was steadily increased reaching a maximum of 62,239 tonnes in 2012 for an ore throughput of 10,5 million tonnes. In order to get these production and throughput rates, a number of changes have been made in the metallurgical parameters of the plant operation since the start up, among them particle size, heap height, acid addition distribution in curing and leaching solution, leach cycles and pad type. Most of the modifications have been implemented after carrying out extensive column test work programs. The modifications implemented and the results obtained, as well as the test work programs carried out, are discussed in this paper.

The cost of mining during the past history of these mines has been excessive, principally by reason of the inefficiency of labor under the wage-system. The amount of labor performed per man was unsatisfactory; and Mr. Edmund B. Kirby, the general manager, decided to adopt the contract-system as a remedy. For this purpose the method now in use was devised by the writer (then and now the superintendent), as best adapted to the local conditions. Throughout the 1980's the tem Mine-Wide Monitoring System has had various meanings for manufacturers of these systems and underground mine operators alike. System suppliers had visions of grandeur in the early 80's as they envisioned each mine, that has more than a single section, installing a computer based monitoring system to provide surveillance, control and documentation of the entire mining operation, including everything from a single heat detector to the weekly payroll. In a few cases this may have become reality but the truth is these systems have quietly become a steady but unspectacular workbase for the modern mining industry of the 1990's. As it exists today the total market for underground monitoring systems may not exceed $10 million annually. Suppliers have lowered their expectations of the dollar value of this particular market. Some were entering a new market because of experience with computer based data acquisition systems. Others had been active in the mining industry for years with more traditional equipment (communication systems, methane monitors, safety equipment, etc.) and decided to become involved with Mine-Wide Monitoring Systems.

In characterizing tars obtained by the low-temperature carbonization of North Dakota lignite, infrared spectra have been an invaluable aid in both qualitative and quantitative examination. Quite, early in the tar-research program of the Federal Bureau of Mines it became evident that the small number of published spectra available for hydroxy-aromatics would be inadequate for comparative purposes when dealing with the wide range of compounds present in coal tar; therefore, compiling a catalog of spectra was begun as a continuing part of the tar program. Because these spectra should be valuable to other investigators in this and related fields, they are being presented in these reports. This supplement to the original publications presents the spectra (figs, I to 32), representing 32 compounds, largely phenolic materials. The major problem of this project has been the availability of materials for examination. Most of the compounds included in this supplement were synthesized at the Bureau of Mines Lignite Research Laboratory. Some were obtained from commercial sources, whereas the compound 2'-hydroxy-l-phenylnaphthalene was synthesized at the Bureau of Mines laboratory in Bruceton, Pa. l. INTRODUCTION. IN casting a thermal balance of the heat generated and absorbed in a blast-furnace treating lead-, copper- and similar non-ferrous ores, assumptions have always to be made for the values of the heat of formation of slag. ? Considering that the larger part of the charge introduced into the furnace comes out in the form of slag, the significance becomes apparent of a lack of heat-values for the singulo-silicate, which is the type of slags commonly made. The aim of the present investigation is to supply these heat-values as far as possible with the apparatus and the time available. The heats of formation of the ferrous and manganous bi-silicates have been determined by Le Chatelier; 1 those of some silicates other than iron and manganese by Tschernobaeff:2 finally Richards 3 gives a figure for a copper blast-furnace slag of known composition. The existing data and those resulting from the present investigation are assembled in Table VI. II. MATERIALS USED. The materials used in the experiments were silica, ferrous oxide, and calcium carbonate. Silica.-The silica sold in the market as chemically pure usually contains small amounts of magnesia, lime, and alumina, and is therefore not suited for the work. Atualmente, há uma grande preocupação em criar materiais cada vez mais sustentáveis, dentro desse contexto, encontra-se, o compósito de matriz polimérica adicionado de fibra natural. Dentro dessa classe de fibras, uma das mais utilizadas é a fibra de bambu, a qual apresenta um grande desafio devido a dificuldade para a sua obtenção ultrapassando o comprimento crítico de utilização, que é em média 200 mm. Fibras com essa dimensão são consideradas longas, sendo utilizadas principalmente para a confecção de compósitos como carga de reforço dentro da matriz. Logo, é de fundamental importância determinar métodos simples de obtenção das fibras para se obter melhores resultados diante da finalidade do compósito. Esse trabalho visa apresentar de forma clara processos mecânicos e químicos para se obter fibras de bambu curtas, particuladas e longas, apresentando o seu potencial mecânico através de ensaios mecânicos. Ao realizar ensaios químicos e mecânicos, os procedimentos que apresentaram melhores resultados em relação a fibra ensaiada natural foram a mercerização a 5% de NaOH em solução aquosa e acetilação por uma hora a 100ºC.

"It is well understood that the flow of liquid metal in the mold region of the caster can have a notable effect on the overall solidification behavior in aluminum casting. Previously our group has characterized the flow in this region in a water model, using particle imaging velocimetry. The flow is significantly effected by the specifics of the metal delivery system, i.e. size, geometry, used during the cast. Recently, a time-averaged 3D numerical model of the nozzle, combo bag and sump region has been developed and its validity has been tested against experimental data. Cases were run for different sized combo bags as well as bags that have been blocked. The results show satisfactory agreement between the physical and mathematical models.IntroductionFluid flow in the head of an electromagnetic (EM) and direct chill (DC) ingots has been shown to effect many important operational parameters in casting such as superheat removal, macrosegregation, and hot cracking. In most cases, the momentum from the nozzle is diverted through a delivery system, termed a bag, before entering the mold region. The specific geometries of the bags vary widely from operator to operator suggesting that there is still some question as to the optimum design. Several studies [1-4] have been carried out to understand the influence of the bag design on the solidification behavior in aluminum casters. However, few studies have included numerical prediction with experimental verification. Unfortunately, many simulations performed today still do not accurately account for flow in such devices.Recently, a significant amount of research into the flow resulting from the metal delivery systems has been performed [5-8]. The thrust of this research has been characterizing the flow patterns by a measurement technique called particle imaging velocimetry. The data suggest that the method of delivering the liquid metal into the mold region has a significant effect on the nature of the flow. With a detailed set of quantitative data from a water model, a numerical model can be built and tested to ensure a proper description of the flow field. The computational model used in these simulations is designed to represent a laboratory scale model of a caster in which ""combo"" bags were simulated. Such bags are mostly of a densely woven glass fiber material with low permeability to aluminum. ""Windows"", of a more open weave, permit aluminum to flow from the bag, see Fig. I. Two different sized combo bags were modeled, each subject to two different outflow window configurations. Furthermore, experimental measurements [9] were used to validate the model results."

"Al-Li binary alloys with nominal Li contents of0.15, 1.1and2.8 (in wt%) were aged naturally at room temperature for two months, aged at low temperatures ( 65 and 1 OOEC) for up to 2 months and aged artificially at 190EC for 4 days after water quenching to 25EC following solutionizing at 530EC for 20 minutes. Ageing behavior of these binary alloys were studied by Vicker's Hardness measurements and DSC thermal analysis. Thermal analysis results indicate the formation of GP zones of Al-Li system in Al-2.8wt%Li binary alloy. In the same alloy, rapid quenching from one phase region (a) gives rise to precipitation of small o' particles in a matrix (a) with still high supersaturation. During ageing of this alloy below lOOEC an additional transformation, i.e., GP zone formation occurs proceeding at a very high rate which is described on the basis of the theoretical analysis for the quenched Al-Li system proposed by Khachaturyan et al [6]. Ageing at temperatures below 11 OEC takes place slowly by the formation of small d' particles of lower thermal stability than the quenched-in d precipitates in addition to GP zones resulting in an increase in hardness compared to water quenched samples. During artificial ageing, GP zones transform by dissolution to d' precipitates while d' particles already in the microstructure coarsen during under aged condition at which hardness increases with time till peak aged condition.IntroductionIn binary Al-Li alloys the d' (Al3Li) fully coherent internally ordered inetastable phase of Li2 structure with a=0.4038d [1-5] forms homogeneously between 120 and 190EC before the formation of stable d' (A!Li) phase and cause the superior mechanical properties. This is due to an appreciable age hardening effect resulting because of the d' precipitation during ageing [1]. The response of d' to decomposition and its formation kinetics have been studied previously and it is believed that the decomposition of the a-supersaturated solid solution occurs in a two stage process; i.e., a 6 d' (Al3Li) 6 d(A!Li). Khachturyan et al [6] theoretically investigated precipitation of the d' phase and gave an interpretation of the transformation paths of the quenched Al-Li alloys. They predict that the disordered supersaturated solid solution congruently orders, and then the uniformly ordered solution decomposes into ordered regions that differ in Li-content. Finally, ordered d' phase forms in the disordered matrix."
