"Vizcachitas is an advanced stage copper–molybdenum porphyry deposit, fully owned by Los Andes Copper and located in Central Chile. The property contains an indicated resource of 1,038 million tonnes grading 0.37% Cu and 0.012% Mo, and an inferred resource of 318 million tonnes grading 0.345% Cu and 0.013% Mo (Coffey & Alquimia, 2014). The deposit occurs in the same geological belt as several other giant copper-molybdenum porphyry deposits including Río Blanco-Los Bronces, Los Pelambres-Pachon and El Teniente. In 2018, the original Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) study from 2014 was updated; this paper presents the geometallurgical testwork that was performed to support that update. The testwork focused on the metallurgical characterization of 40 DDH samples and the development of a more profound orebody knowledge by relating geological features with metallurgical performance. The scope of work included complete chemical and mineralogical QemSCAN characterization; SAG, ball mill and abrasion testing; complete rougher and cleaner kinetics including locked-cycle-test; environmental ABA and settling tests on rougher tailings. The results show that the ore can be classified as medium-hard, with a hardness that is slightly below the average for large Cu/Mo deposits in the region. A good correlation was found between lithology and breakage characteristics, implying that the specific energy consumption (kWh/t) is well correlated to rock type. The results of the flotation tests were very encouraging and did not show significant variability. An overall Cu recovery of 91% can be expected for the flotation circuit. The use of a relatively coarse primary grind size gave good final recovery and grade for both Cu and Mo, and deserves further attention in future work, as this impacts positively both energy consumption and water recovery.INTRODUCTION Los Andes Copper Ltd. is a Canadian exploration and development company focused on the acquisition, exploration and development of advanced stage copper deposits in Latin America. At the annual meeting of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Dec. 4 to 7, 1917, a great many matters were discussed and acted upon in which nearly all engineers are equally interested. Of the numerous sessions of the meeting, only a few of the most important can be referred too here. The Committee on Gages held an open meeting for the discussion of this important matter. Representatives from a large number of manufacturing plants and from several departments of the Federal Government were present. The question of gages and standardization of mechanical details is of course of paramount interest just now in connection with the manufacture of ordnance and ammunition. After discussion, the following recommendation was adopted by the meeting, for inclusion in all Government contracts for the manufacture of these materials. Cemented carbides or hard metals that generally consist of hard tungsten carbide and a tough metal binder such as cobalt are important in many segments of the world economy, ranging from automobile related components to machining, cutting, and drilling tools. For metal cutting operations such as turning and milling, replaceable cemented carbide inserts are frequently used. The exposure of inserts to very severe conditions (e.g. temperatures as high as 1000°C) in combination with very high loads, limits their lifetime. When the tools and components are scrapped, they are collected with a view to recovering the tungsten carbide and cobalt due to both their environmental aspects and their strategic importance. In this work, a selective electrolysis process was used for recovery of WC powder particles from cemented carbide scraps. The WC-10Co and WC-10Co-VC up to 3 wt.% VC was produced using powder metallurgy route. The mean particle size of WC, Co and VC were selected as 2.5, l.5 and 2.2 µm respectively. Referring to electrochemical curves of WC-10Co cemented carbides in hydrochloric acid solutions with different concentrations, the recovery rate was enhanced in IN acid. Therefore, this solution was selected for recycling of all samples. The surfaces of as-produced and corroded specimens were investigated using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Detection of corrosion products was provided by energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS). According to results, the selective electrolysis process could be useful in the recycling of scrap carbide materials, although more studies should be undertaken on economical aspects of the process and the quality of samples produced using recovered powders.

In this paper it is shown that the vertical component of the earth's magnetic field for the area of the United States can be very closely approximated by assuming it to be the sum of the vertical components of two magnetic fields. The first of these is the field of the centered dipole described by J. Bartels,l the axis of this dipole intersecting the earth's surface at two antipodal points, the one in the Northern Hemisphere being at latitude 78.5°N. and longitude 69°W., and the dipole having such strength that the vertical component of its field at its axis pole is 0.63 oersted. The second field is that due to a second dipole situated halfway between the center of the earth and a point on the earth's surface at latitude 38.5°N., longitude 91.5°W., the axis of this dipole being along this radius, the south pole being toward the surface, and the dipole being of such strength that its field at the point on the surface mentioned above is 0.069 oersted. Using the field computed on this basis, tables of latitude and longitude correction factors were computed and are included in the paper. It is also shown that the secular variation in the earth's magnetic field may be roughly accounted for by assuming it to be due to motion of the second dipole described above. Although there is an error in the equation used for computing the strength of the field due to the second dipole, the distribution of the field computed is very nearly that of the assumed arrangement of dipoles. Subsequent work by the author reveals that minor changes can be made in the location of the second dipole, which will make the computed field fit the observed field even more closely. It has also been found2 that the vertical component of the field may be represented equally well by a purely empiric relationship.

A 0.5 m (20 in) diameter high pressure natural gas pipeline crosses over a coal mine located in Central Utah. Ground movement induced by the mining operation could possibly place excessive strain on the pipeline causing it to rupture. The mining operation extracts coal from two seams using the room and pillar method. The seams are situated one on top of the other and both lie directly under the pipeline. At present, only the upper seam is being mined beneath the pipeline. However, in the future, the mining operation of the lower seam will also affect the pipeline. As would be expected, mining of both coal seams causes surface subsidence. This is especially true when the pillars are extracted during retreat.

A joint statistical report released by the U.S. Department of Commerce and U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission indicates that business investment in new plants and equipment is expected to total $81.8 billion during 1971. This figure is based on the findings of a survey conducted in late April and May and reflects about a 1 ½ % decrease in investments from the $83.1 billion projected in February. Mining, on the other hand, is still in a bullish mood and is expected to spend $1.99 billion in 1971 compared to $1.89 billion in 1970 and $1.86 billion in 1969. Based on figures quoted above, mining investment in 1971 should show a 5.2% increase over 1970. Carl E. Bagge, president of the National Coal Association, was the dedicatory speaker at the new Milton R. Young Station of the Minnkota Power Cooperative in North Dakota. This new power plant incorporates many innovations which have overcome the problems of using the low-cost lignite abundant in the area. According to Bagge, this development and President Nixon's recent request for an extra $10 million for coal gasification plants is helping the region lead the way in providing for the power needs of the future. He also maintains that gasification of coal can reconcile coal consumption with the demand for cleaner air, and also assure the nation of adequate pipeline gas.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the washability characteristics of 14 coalbed samples collected in Wyoming. Such data is needed to evaluate the quality of the coals of the West where most of our low-sulfur-content coal reserves are found. Of the 14 samples included in this report 13 had a total sulfur content of 1.1 percent or less. All of the samples contained low per¬centages of ash or could be readily washed to a desirable ash level with minimal loss of yield. The coals ranged in rank from high-volatile B bituminous to subbituminous C, although 10 of the samples were high-volatile C bituminous. The coalbeds varied in thickness from 4.5 to an unknown thickness greater than 67.5 feet.

In Europe, water infusion is used widely to reduce generation of respirable dust during mining. Its use in the US is limited to a few plow operations in the deeper parts of the Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbed. The technology for infusing water into retreating longwalls is described and results of a recent Bureau test in the Lower Sunnyside Coalbed demonstrated dust reductions ranging from 47% to 64%. Because water infusion increases moisture content of the coalbed, face air velocities in excess of 2.5 m/s (500 fpm) are possible, further diluting dust levels before dust entrainment occurs. An economic analysis shows a 23% reduction in operating costs when coal production is increased by changing from unidirectional to bidirectional mining with water infusion.

CERTAIN features of the response of copper and brass to deformation and recrystallization remain obscure. The textures obtained on rolled sheet are listed by Schmid and Boas1 as: No adequate explanation has been advanced for the presence of the secondary deformation texture of copper and its absence in brass or for the origin of the cubic recrystallization texture of copper.2 A recent publication3 attempted to rationalize the above empirically described annealing texture of brass on the basis of retention of the (110) [112] rolling orientation plus twinning about the central octahedral poles of the usual secondary (110) [115] orientation. The difference in the textures of annealed copper as compared to 70-30 brass is also shown by the difference in the position of ears for drawn copper, at o° and 90°, as compared with drawn brasses, at 45°, for all compositions between 90-10 and 70-30.4 Data on individual crystals are as yet too few to permit of an analysis of these textures comparable to that of mild steel as made by Barrett and Levenson.5 EXPERITMENTAL METHODS The materials studied included copper specimens cut from the central, equiaxed crystal portion of a tough-pitch wirebar; brass made from this copper and high-purity (99.99 per cent) zinc including alloys of 7 per. cent, 15 per cent, 24 per cent, 29 per cent and 36 per cent Zn and large single crystals of 70-30 brass. Sections ¼ in. thick of the cast polycrystalline copper and brasses were reduced 40 per cent by rolling, recrystallized to a common grain size of 0.045 mm. and then rolled directly to foil 0.002 in. thick. Hardness readings employing both the Vickers and Rockwell machines were taken at intervals during the reduction. For comparison, similar specimens were cross-rolled-i.e., turned through 90 for each pass-and comparable hardness data were secured. Finally sections from the single crystals of brass were cut to obtain the following initial orientations; these sections were rolled, hardness data secured and a complete micrographic record of structural changes obtained:

INTRODUCTION Construction of Phase I, Section A, of the Baltimore Region Rapid Transit System required that six underground stations be built using a cut and cover excavation technique. For five of these stations, soldier piles, used as support of excavation, were installed with tip elevations well below the bottom of the excavation. However, in the case of the sixth subway station, the Mondawmin Station, soldier piles were installed only through soil and decomposed rock, with the tips of the piles being stopped well above the bottom of the excavation in partially decomposed rock. Below the tips of the soldier piles, and below a cut slope where piles were not installed, the sides of the excavation consisted of partially weathered and fresh rock and were supported by a combination of rock bolts, wire mesh and shotcrete. An extensive installation of geotechnical instrumentation permitted detailed monitoring of horizontal and vertical movements of the soldier piles and the walls of the excavation. Preliminary studies indicated that the excavation support system selected for the Mondawmin Station would have several advantages over a conventional system consisting of soldier piles extending to the bottom of the excavation, braced with prestressed struts. These advantages included lower cost of installation, a decreased time required for installation, and a more open excavation for the contractor during construction of the station. The Mondawmin Station is situated in the northwestern quadrant of Baltimore City, approximately 6.4 km (4 miles) from the center of the City. "1. The investigation shows that the Sewanee bed is the only bed of major importance in Marion County, 97 percent of the coal mined in the county having come :from this bed. There are coal reserves in minor quantity in the Battle Creek bed, and production from this bed depends on a few small truck mines. The Richland bed, or Lower Sevanee has been mined in the past, but no coal has been produced from it in late years. There are no production records of any other beds in the county, although some coal has been produced from them.2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and on l,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 61 million short tons as of January 1, 1953. Of this total, 55 million short tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed ·were omitted from the estimate where available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to permit making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.3. Recoverable reserves of coal are estimated in beds 28 inches and more 'thick. This recovery is based on total thickness of coal in the bed (less partings 3/8-inch thick or more), rather than on the thickness of the coal actually mined. This thickness is about the minimum now being mined by hand loading onto conveyors in the Appalachian Region. The combined weighted average recovery for the Sewanee and Battle Creek beds in Marion County, as determined by this investigation, is 60.9 percent. Based on this, the recoverable reserves of coal in Marion County are estimated at 34 million tons."

A Bureau of Mines geologic study of Pennsylvanian and Permian coalbeds in southwestern Pennsylvania was undertaken to determine the effects of coalbed geology and petrology on in situ coalbed gas contents. Data were obtained from 18 coreholes from parts of four 7.5 ' quadrangles in southwestern Washington and northwestern Greene Counties, and from a single corehole in Westmoreland County. A total of 88 samples from 24 coalbeds were collected for direct-method testing to determine gas content. The samples were also analyzed for petrographic composition, chemical composition, and vitrinite reflectance values. Corehole information was used to generate isopach maps and geologic cross sections useful in data interpretation. Results of the investigation show that coalbed gas content is related to vitrinite reflectance, but not to petrographic composition. Gas contents are also influenced by other geologic factors such as roof rock lithology and competency, and location with respect to local fold structure.

Dithiophosphates are reaction products of phosphorous pentasulfide with various organic compounds such as phenols, alcohols, mercaptans, dioalcohols, amines, and nitrides. The products with alcohols are commercially known as "aerofloats" and these are investigated in this presentation. It appears that the formation of insoluble metal dithio phosphates is responsible for their collecting properties with minerals." In this aspect they are very similar to xanthates.3 The solubility of metal dithiophosphates depends on the number of carbon atoms in the organic chain of the corresponding alcohol. An empirical mathematical model is presented here. It allows one to predict the number of carbon atoms necessary to ensure that a certain metal dithiophosphate will form at a selected pH value of the water solution. The Nature of Dithiophosphates Dithiophosphoric acid is the product of the reaction of phosphorus pentasulfide with an alcohol, as shown in the following equation: [P2S3 + 4 ROH - 2 (RO)2 PS2H + H2S (1)] where R stands for a hydrocarbon chain. The acid so produced can be neutralized by a base to produce the corresponding salt as shown in the following: [(RO), PS2H + NH- (RO)2 PS, NH,. (2)] In this aspect dithiophosphates are similar to xanthates, the only difference being the substitution of the tetravalent carbon atom in the xanthate polar group by a pentavalent phosphorus atom in the dithiophosphate group. This difference implies at least two characteristics: (1) that there are two hydrocarbon chains associated with the polar group so that an increase in the number of carbons of the single chain is expected to have a pronounced effect on the flotation properties, and (2) that the bond between the sulfur and the central atom is stronger than in the xanthate group. This probably leads to a decrease in both the polarizability of the electronic cloud of the sulfur and the interaction with cations.3 However, what is lost in the dithiophosphates by having a weak polar group can be gained by an increase in the number of carbons as will be seen later. Taking into account the size of the atoms involved in a dithiophosphate molecule, as listed in Table 1, It is possible to draw an approximate diagram of its structure as shown in [Fig. 1]. It is assumed here that the length of the single hydrocarbon chain is equal to that of the corresponding alcohol. Preparation and Purification Acid dithiophosphates can be prepared, as previously mentioned, in accordance with Eq. 1. The rate of this reaction is too slow at room temperature and can be improved by increasing the temperature to about 60° or 80°C7 or by evacuating the system. In our investigation evacuation was performed by a water aspiration pump. The dithiophosphoric acid so produced is liquid and dissolves in the alcohol. At the end of the reaction the product is filtered from the remaining P2S3; and dissolved in petroleum ether. "Supercritical water can provide an unique reaction atmosphere for synthesizing metal oxide nanoparticles. Due to the drastic change of properties of water around the critical point, including density, dielectric constant and ionic product, the reaction phase with O 2 or H2 gas and the reaction rate and equilibrium can be varied to synthesize new materials or define particle morphologies. In this work, hydrothermal crystallization experiments are performed with several types of flow apparatus that allow convenient manipulation of variables such as temperature, pressure, and residence time. Key features in the flow modes and material preparation are discussed. The proposed supercritical hydrothermal synthesis method has the following desirable features: i) nanoparticles can be produced, ii) morphology of the produced particles can be controlled with small changes in pressure or temperature, and iii) a reducing or oxidizing atmosphere can be applied by introducing oxygen or hydrogen or other gases. An overview of this method is given for functional material synthesis of significant industrial interest including barium hexaferrite magnetic particles, YAO/Tb phosphor fine particles and lithium cobalt fine crystals.IntroductionHydrothermal crystallization, a method of metal oxide formation from metal salt solutions, is typically used at temperatures ranging from 373 K to 473 K. We are developing a new process for hydrothermal crystallizations that uses temperatures in the range of 673 K to 723 K, which is just above the critical temperature of water1 • 8 • In this work, we refer to this process as supercritical hydrothermal synthesis. The supercritical state of water allows one to vary reaction rate and reaction equilibrium by shifting the dielectric constant and solvent density with pressure and temperature. From of our research on material production in supercritical water, we have identified the following specific features of the supercritical hydrothermal synthesis method: (i) ultrafine particles can be produced, (ii) morphology of the produced particles can be controlled to some extent with pressure and/or temperature, and (iii) a homogeneous reducing or oxidizing atmospheres can be provided by introducing gases, such as O 2, H2, H2O 2• and so on.1"

Titanium forms several compounds with oxygen and also is able to dissolve interstitially about 33 atomic percent of oxygen. Starting with titanium dioxide, reduction becomes increasingly difficult as oxygen is removed; and the final step, be reduction of the titanium-oxygen interstitial solutions, is by far the most difficult. The possibility of reducing titanium oxide, or of purifying titanium containing oxygen, by treatment with certain more volatile metals has been a subject of considerable interest. Theoretical appraisal of the limitations of this possibility, however, has been hampered by lack of adequate information on the thermodynamic properties of the titanium-oxygen solutions. The purpose of the present work was to remedy this difficulty by expanding the thermodynamic knowledge regarding these solutions. The experimental work involved three types of calorimetry and furnished the following information: (1) Heats of formation of 11 titanium-oxygen solutions, in the range of 0 to 10 wt.-percent oxygen, were determined at 298.15° K. As a byproduct, an improved value of the heat of formation of rutile was obtained, which, in turn, led to improved values of the heats of formation of the lower titanium-oxygen compounds. (2) Low-temperature heat-capacity data and entropies at 298.15°K in were determined for 2 representative titanium-oxygen interstitial solutions. (3) High-temperature heat-content data were obtained for 2 titanium-oxygen interstitial solutions to about 1,600° K.

IN a study1of the action of amyl xanthate on chalcocite in water suspension, it was found that if the xanthate is added in relatively large quantity the xanthate group can be accounted for in three forms: (1) as xanthate ion remaining in water, (2) as benzene-soluble cuprous xanthate on the chalcocite, (3) as a benzene-insoluble coating on the chalcocite. Reduction in the amount of xanthate added leads to disappearance of form 1 then of form 2. With minute quantities of added xanthate, substantially all the reagent is of the "unleachable" kind. Yet this unleachable xanthate can be dissolved by pyridine to form a soluble cuprous xanthate complex, and it is sufficient in effectiveness to make chalcocite flotable even if insufficient in quantity to form a complete monomolecular film on the mineral. In that study it was also found that chalcocite abstracts cuprous xanthate from benzene solution, in what may (or may not) be a case of molecular adsorption. It seemed desirable, therefore, to study further the "unleachable" xanthate on the chalcocite, and particularly to ascertain whether it is formed as a result of the benzene leach or is actually formed during the conditioning of chalcocite in aqueous xanthate solution. A splendid tool to make such studies has recently been perfected; that is, the use of radioactive spies or tracer atoms. With this tool, it was thought possible to answer the problem stated above, but, unfortunately, this did not prove to be true. Answer to the flotation question was clouded by the existence of rapid and selective diffusion of copper atoms in the solid mineral-a phenomenon that was totally unexpected yet remains interesting and perhaps important. METHOD OF RADIOACTIVE SPIES The method of radioactive spies is discussed in many places. Two convenient references are the article by Evans2 and the book by Pollard and Davidson.3 The method was first developed by Von Hevesy and Paneth in 1913, when only natural radioactive isotopes were available. These isotopes are few in number, and so the method remained limited in scope. Recently the synthesis of over 350 active isotopes of all the known stable chemical elements4 has opened widely expanded possibilities for the method. A fundamental tenet of the method is that a radioactive atom and a nonradioactive atom are exactly alike until disintegration of the radioactive atom. Then, by its sudden death, the spy reveals its location. The relative abundance of spies at various locations makes it possible to ascertain the relative abundance of the corresponding nonradioactive atoms at the same times and locations. THE manufacture of ferromanganese in the blast furnace having been the subject of considerable attention in the Institute, I beg to put on record a contribution to the discussion from a quarter hitherto not directly represented, namely, the St. Louis furnaces, near Marseilles in France, belonging to a company of which M. Jordan, a member of the Institute, is Managing Director. These furnaces commenced in 1862 to manufacture specular pig (fontes à facettes) containing from three to six per cent. of manganese. In 1864 the regular production of spiegeleisen (fontes miroitantes), containing seven to ten per cent, of manganese, was inaugurated. At that time the Rhine was the only locality of this manufacture, and the Bessemer works of England and France obtained from Germany all their spiegel. From 1864 to the present time, the St. Louis furnaces have been advancing steadily the percentage of manganese in their product. From ferromanganese of thirty per cent. they had arrived, about two years ago, at a product containing seventy to seventy-five per cent., and for some time past they have been turning out what, as M. Jordan remarks, may fairly be termed fonte de manganese, or manganese pig, instead of iron, since the percentage of iron it contains is not more than 8.5, while the percentage of manganese is 85, or ten times as great. This very high grade material has a peculiar appearance, entirely different from that of ordinary cast iron or spiegel. It is granular, and steely gray in color. The following analyses, communicated to the Société to des Ingenieurs Oivils, by M. Jordan, show the composition of various products of the St. Louis furnaces :

In the production units of ferromanganese alloys wastewater are generated. They mainly arise from gutters of drainage water from warehouse of raw material (manganese ore, reducing agents and other), product and slag. This wastewater, in general, may contain particles that will suffer difficulty to naturally decant, giving the water turbidity and color characteristics. Thus, this study aims to characterize the effluent, the treated water and the sludge from the sedimentation tank from the one main Brazilian plant. The investigated characteristics were: turbidity, total solids (TS), suspended solids (SS), dissolved solids (DS), pH, Eh, COD (chemical oxygen demand), residue classification and chemical analysis by ICP - OES. The turbidity before treatment was 417 NTU and after passing through the tank, 44 NTU, a figure slightly higher than the emission standards for Class 1 regulated by the Brazilian environmental legislation in force. The values for TS, SS and DS of the effluent were 225, 114.3 and 110 mg/L, respectively. For the treated water the values were 93, 48.3 and 45 mg/L for TS, SS and DS, respectively. The sedimentation process was able to reduce by 21 % of the COD. In the test of loss on ignition (LOI) from the tank bottom sludge were observed losses of 29.35 %, while the volatile analysis found 20.70 % of volatiles in the sample. It was determined that the concentrations of Al, Fe, Mn and S are, respectively, 0.1875 mg.L-1, 0.3071 mg.L-1, 0,789 mg l-1 and 0.00828 mg.L-1, values above the maximum allowed by law. Based on the analysis of X-ray diffraction, the identified minerals in the sludge were quartz, muscovite, kaolinite, calcite and albite.
