"A new raw water intake from the South Holston River to the Kingsport water treatment plant is under construction. The exploration for the 335 meter long horseshoe shaped tunnel design took advantage of the site topography along the alignment to better define the complex geology consisting of Knox Limestone and Sevier Shale formations separated by a fault zone. To assess the geological conditions and to determine the extent of the fault zone, a 183 meter long horizontal boring and geophysical investigation was performed along a portion of the tunnel’s horizontal alignment. Explorations defined the fault zone width at approximately 5 meters and packer testing along the alignment provided a means of estimating groundwater inflows. As the tunnel excavation advances, comparisons of exploratory data versus encountered conditions will be made. This paper provides details on the geotechnical investigation, lessons learned, and the influence of the geology on the tunnel design. PROJECT OVERVIEW The Kingsport WTP is supplied with raw water via the South Holston River. The City of Kingsport (City) owns and operates the Kingsport Water Treatment Plant (WTP). The existing raw water intake system, consisting of pumps, power supply, raw water piping and appurtenant facilities has been determined to be vulnerable to failure. The original Raw Water Pump Station (RWPS) was constructed in 1928 as part of the original Kingsport WTP project. The 1928 RWPS operated until 1970 when it was replaced by the existing RWPS. This existing system still utilizes the 1928 piping and piping tunnel. Improvements to the RWPS hydraulics and capacity are required to meet the City’s future water treatment needs. The system extracts water from the South Fork of the Holsten River and coveys it via three pressure pipelines to the WTP. The conveyance piping exits the RWPS, ascends approximately 23 m up a near vertical rock outcropping then enters a 120 m long tunnel. Upon exiting the tunnel the piping continues underground to the WTP. The drill and blast tunnel is horseshoe shaped and nominally 3.3 m high by 3.3 m wide. The easternmost 62.3 m of the tunnel is without any type of support. The remainder is lined with concrete. According to the City of Kingsport, the concrete lining was installed in the 1970’s as part of upgrades to the facility. An evaluation of the current facilities concluded that the conveyance piping was in poor condition and required replacement."

WHEN bronze is melted in open-flame furnaces a considerable amount of slag is formed during the melting operation. This slag may be incidental to the melting practice or it may be formed intentionally by slag-forming constituents added to the furnace charge to provide a covering for the melted metal. When this slag is removed from the furnace, it contains, in addition to the free metal carried with it by the skimming operation, a considerable amount of metal as oxide either combined or mechanically mixed with it. By the usual crushing and washing methods this metallic oxide generally goes to the tailings pile, so diluted by other foundry waste that its recovery is economically impossible. If this furnace slag is not mixed with other foundry waste, practically all of the metal oxide as well as the free metal may be recovered by some form of smelting operation. The first side of the problem to be considered is the amount of slag produced. It may not be true that the majority of foundries have no record of the amount of slag made, but it is certainly true that a very great many either have no record or pay little attention to it. Usually the collection of furnace slag for one normal week's run will be sufficient to determine the advisability of its being handled in a different manner from the crushing and concentrating generally employed. If a large representative sample of the accumulation is crushed and concentrated and the recovery compared with the results of a careful assay, it will be found that a large percentage of the total metal content was lost in the washing process. The percentage of loss will be greater than the metallic oxide content, as some free metal in extremely fine particles always is carried away in grains of slag. From such a comparison, it may be determined whether or not the slag should be melted, sold or treated as before. An example of an actual test of this kind is given below.

In his technical note entitled "Specimen Temperature During Electropolishing of Aluminum Crystals" Dr. Nakada 1 reported that the temperature of his aluminum specimen increased 65°C when it was polished electrolytically; he therefore concluded that the temperature of the specimens used in our work (Nakada's Refs. 4 and 5) similarly increased by this amount. From this he further concluded that the change in plastic-flow characteristics associated with the removal of the surface by electropolishing during deformation were due solely to a temperature effect. We believe that these conclusions are not justified. It is, of course, realized that the amount of the temperature increase is associated with the total heat transfer of the entire system, including the efficiency of the stirring action, heat flow through the grip on the specimen, and so forth. Of great importance is the type of electrolyte used for polishing. For example, in Dr. Nakada's experiment a methanol-perchloric acid solution was used. This solution has a relatively low conductivity and for the current densities of 0.3 amp per sq cm the electrical input appears to be 30 to 40 w. In our research a methanol-nitric acid solution was employed and for the size of specimen employed by Dr. Nakada the power never exceeded 7 w. There are major differences in his test apparatus which also appear to affect the temperature rise. In our case a steel specimen holder was used in order to provide a good heat sink and conduction path. The cathode was a coiled aluminum tube through which a coolant was passed to provide additional cooling capacity near the specimen. The stirrer was placed in a position to obtain maximum cooling efficiency. On the other hand Dr. Nakada used a teflon grip to support the specimen at one end only and a flat copper cathode, thus providing a much less efficient heat sink as compared with the metal grips used in our studies. The relationship between current density and the temperature increase for two sizes of aluminum crystals tested in our tensile apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. The temperature measurements were determined from a thermocouple spot-welded to the surface of the specimen. The thermocouple was protected from the acid by means of a thin film of stop-off lacquer which covered just the outer surface of the thermocouple junction. Whereas Dr. Nakada reported a time delay of 8 min to obtain thermal equilibrium, our temperature change occurred in less than 15 sec. This emphasizes the importance of the heat transfer in the entire system. However, readings were taken over a period in excess of 5 min to assure thermal equilibrium. The data given in Fig. 1 were also confirmed by determining the thermal expansion of the specimen in a sensitive creep apparatus. As may be seen, for the smaller specimen the increase in temperature is 8°C for a current density of 1.5 amp per sq in. The majority of our data on the effects of surface removal on the plastic behavior of aluminum were obtained at current-density values at or below this value. Above 1.5 amp per sq in. the temperature rise is uncertain; for under certain conditions, especially in the vicinity of 2 amp per sq in., the anode can become polarized and the current flow is erratic. This condition is easily recognized because wide fluctuations in the creep and stress-strain data make it virtually impossible to obtain reliable results, a condition which was always avoided in our work. The temperature increase for the larger specimen is less than that of the smaller specimens below a current density of 1.5 amp per sq in. At a current density of 2 amp per sq in. the temperature increased 13°C. The above temperature data are in accord with observations made during creep experiments. Using a transducer capable of detecting strain in the order of 10 -6, temperature changes in excess of 8°C were not detected when the current density was increased to as high a value as 1.5 amp per sq in. Finally we wish to point out that our experimental data cannot be explained solely in terms of a heat effect. In the period 1982-1992, world trade has increased in real terms about 65% (Anon., 1992b). The nominal value of this trade in the early 1990s is approximately $5 trillion. In 1970, mineral commodities constituted approximately 20% of the value of world trade. By 1980, despite rising petroleum prices, mineral commodities made up about 18% of the total value of world trade, with crude oil amounting to 16% and other minerals the remaining 2%. By 1987, the major worldwide economic slowdown and falling oil prices meant that minerals constituted only about 10% of the total value of world trade, or about $500 billion in 1987 (Kimbell and Zajac, 1988). The importance of minerals in world trade since 1987 has remained at about these levels. Approximately 40% of world mineral commodity production is traded internationally. Some economists predict that minerals and other commodities are likely to continue to decline in relative importance in terms of the value of world economic output, as well as world trade, into the foreseeable future (Thurow, 1992). This projected decline in commodity demand may also be related to much slower global economic growth over the next decade (Alperovitz, 1992). Industrial minerals and rocks constituted roughly 2.5% of total mineral commodity exports in the late 1980s, but their relative importance as a portion of mineral commodity exports nearly doubled in the decade 1977-1987 (Kimbell and Zajac, 1988). Industrial minerals constitute the most rapidly growing share of total mineral commodity exports. In addition, price declines among industrial minerals were uncommon in the decade 1977-1987 (Kimbell and Zajac, 1988). While prices of sulfur and most of the fertilizer minerals have seen some erosion and slow growth in markets in the period 1987-1992, other industrial minerals have increased in both value and share of the export market (USBM, 1992). The place of industrial minerals in world trade becomes even more significant when one looks at shipments of chemical fertilizers and basic chemicals that are counted as manufactured products rather than industrial mineral commodities. The United States is the major world producer of industrial mineral commodities and products made from these nonmetallic minerals and rocks. The former Soviet Union, now The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), and China have very significant deposits of industrial minerals. Japan exports significant quantities of cement. The US, CIS, and Morocco export large amounts of phosphate rock. Canada and Germany export substantial amounts of potash. Sulfur from Poland, industrial diamonds from South Africa, Zaire, and Brazil, and fluorspar from Mexico are all important exports.

Uranium is a very mobile element geochemically and is widely dispersed in the lithosphere and hydrosphere. Under oxidizing conditions, it is particularly widespread and appears in all parts of the surface hydrologic system. As a result, this system is a leading candidate in uranium-resource assessments as a new base from which total resources might be estimated. No other sampling system provides the large volume geochemical capture as the continental hydrosphere and is as pervasive and non-selective regardless of rock type. However, the water system as a uranium metal sampler is not without drawbacks as the development of a National sampling program based on it has shown, In spring 1973, the National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) was announced by the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). The program was conceived to provide an evaluation of the domestic uranium resources and to identify areas favorable for uranium exploration. The specific NURE objectives are as follows (Bowyer, 1974): 1. To provide a preliminary evaluation of domestic resources and favorable exploration areas by early 1976, based on existing data. 2. To conduct a comprehensive evaluation of domestic resources and favorable areas by 1980, based on advanced state-of-the-art information. 3. To conduct an R&D program into new and improved procedures, equipment, and technology for uranium exploration and assessment. 4. To disseminate information on new exploration concepts and technology.

Large scale, profitable, offshore mining of cassiterite started in 1907 around the coast of south Thailand and continues today in Indonesia. The more complex marine mining of diamonds commenced in the early 1960?s and is now an established industry off the coast of Namibia in southern Africa. The activities have involved many diverse organisations, and have required the development of new marine mining equipment. De Beers Marine, more recently as contractor to Namdeb, has been the dominant producer since 1989. Smaller, public, mining companies, registered in South Africa, Canada and the U.K., have achieved mixed performance results, but the total annual revenue from offshore diamonds now exceeds about US$ 180 M. With the benefit of hindsight, there are some useful lessons to be learned from the experiences. Mining of placer deposits at sea is more difficult and more costly than on land. It justifiably commences in response to a market demand for a product that cannot be supplied in sufficient quantity from onshore sources, not because the marine resource exists. The high costs can be offset in places by submarine grades so high that they have not been seen on land for a century. Technical and commercial success requires a combination, and a sufficiency, of ore reserves, capital, experienced people, and technology. Economic viability is not achieved easily and some diamond mining companies have experienced a very short productive life, terminating in their acquisition or liquidation. The reasons for failure in marine mining, regardless of whether the product is diamonds, gold, or tin, invariably are similar and fall into two categories. Those outside a company?s control include the sea conditions, taxation and fiscal climate, security of lease tenure, and the diamond market. The others, assignable to the company, provide important instructions for those who may aspire to advance the cause of marine mining.

In the anthracite fields of Pennsylvania, mine fires occur with more or less regularity and their existence is an ever-present hazard in coal mining. In all probability 90 per cent. of the mine fires can be ascribed directly or indirectly to the ordinary miner's open lamp. Other causes may be smoking, electrical installations, gas explosions, gas feeders, and the communication of fire to the outcrops from ash dumps, culm banks, timber and brush fires. Fires in pump rooms, engine rooms, and barns have been largely eliminated as a result of the Act of Assembly, approved June 15, 1911, which provides that all inside buildings, including engine rooms, pump rooms, barns, etc., shall be constructed of incombustible materials. Smoking of pipes, cigars, and cigarettes should be prohibited in the mines and too much care cannot be exercised in preventing fires by enforcing all rules designed for that purpose. Mine fires that involve underground fighting are invariably dangerous, and all fires, irrespective of the method pursued in extinguishing them, involve property loss and expense. Each fire generally presents a more or less original problem, dependent on the particular conditions. Generally mine fires may be divided into two classes: Those occurring in inaccessible workings and those occurring in accessible workings. The methods pursued in extinguishing or controlling mine fires are as follows: (I) direct attack, (2) smothering by sealing, (3) flushing with silt or other solids, (4) flooding with water, (5) cutting off, (6) surrounding with incombustible materials, (7) digging out by stripping from the surface. Most fires arc extinguished in their incipiency by direct attack and failure to extinguish by this method is due to late discovery, lack of water, and facilities for fighting, or improper procedure in the initial attack. Should the method first pursued be unsuccessful, careful consideration should be given in determining next the method to be adopted; then the work should be carried on as rapidly as possible and under the supervision of the most competent persons. Materials and supplies should be furnished without delay and in sufficient quantities for the work to be accomplished.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating a method of dewatering flocculated fine-particle waste that involves treating the waste with a high molecular-weight polymer such as polyethylene oxide (PED) followed by dewatering on a static screen and/or in a trommel. Dilution of the polymer solution used for dewatering and use of the ion-exchanged form of the montmorillonite clay were found to be major factors determining the amount of polymer required to dewater clay-containing slurries. The amount of polymer, A, required to dewater ion-exchanged montmorillonite can be described by the equation, An = kC + b where n, k, and b are empirical constants and C is the concentration of the polymer solution used for dewatering. Clays that require large amounts of polymer for dewatering also dewater to a lower solids content. The concentration of the polymer solution is important because it affects the radius of the polymer coil in solution and hence its ease of transfer to a bridging configuration by shear. The constant, n, a function of the charge to hydrated radius of the exchange ion, relates to the strength of the bond between the polymer and the surface of the clay through a water bridge. The constant k is related to the hydrated radi-us for sodium or to the unhydrated radius for the other exchange ions.

The deep sea hydrothermal deposits are one of the most prospecting resources, and various works to develop these mines are now underway. There are also various methods for the pre-site survey of the mines: acoustic survey, electro-magnetic survey, and others. However, as a precise method at the final survey, drilling/coring is indispensable to confirm the three-dimensional distribution and to grasp the dignity of the ores for the final decision of industrialization. This drilling/coring at the final survey is done at many points with distance of 15~25m between each point for on-land deposits. This means that 1km by 1km square area requires (1,000m/25m)2 ~ (1,000m/15m)2 = 1,600 ~ 4,500 holes. The drilling/coring depths will be around 30m or more for the hydrothermal deposits. This depth seems very shallow, but because the stratum is very brittle and is very difficult to core, the average core recovery ratio is around 50%, and 0% core recovery happens very often. Thus, the indispensable work of coring for grasping the dignity of ores is a very difficult work although the coring depth is shallow, and also the required number of holes is enormous. Conventional drilling/coring method on the ocean is to use drillship. However, the cost is very huge. Recently a new technique has come out which is to use remotely controlled drilling machine on seafloor. This machine seems to have a very good performance. However, it is reported that the available inclination of the seafloor where the machine sits on must be less than 15 degrees. The sea floor inclinations of active hydrothermal vents area are usually very steep and slopes of 45 degrees or more are prevailing and it seems very hard to carry out drilling/coring for the machine at these steep slopes, although it is impossible to mine the ore at these areas because the temperature is too high to work there. The inclination of the sea floor at the dead or paused hydrothermal vents area where ore recovery is possible may be not so steep, and the machine may work well. However, the required number of holes is still a very heavy burden. In order to solve these problems, the author proposes a new concept of drilling/coring system operated from a conventional research ship. This concept is still a desk plan, but the author wants to realize this system at any means.

Mineralisation adjacent to Herberton occurs within three main subcentres. The Her- berton Hill subcentre is characterised by the association of Sn,W the Herberton Dividing Range South subcentre by Sn, and the Herberton Dividing Range North by Cu, As. The relation- ships between the subcentres are discussed in terms of metal distribution, production, deposit types, wall rock alteration and re- lationships with granitoid intrusives. The temporal and three dimensional spatial re- lationships between the centres are uncertain.

INTRODUCTION Flotation is by far the most important unit operation of mineral processing. Most of the common base metals are produced from flotation concentrates of metal sulfides. Flotation is proving to be a valuable process for producing non-metallic minerals such as ceramic oxides, silicates, clays and phosphate fertilizers. All these fltation separations are carried out on materials which are predominantly in the 10 to 100 micronssize range. The present practice of flotation circuits for the production of large tonnages of metallic and non-metallic mineral concentrates is fairly well understood, developed, and standardized. Two kinds of problems are encountered (1, 2) with fine particles smaller than 10 microns. First is the interference of the fine particles with the flotation of the coarser particles and the second is the poor flotation behavior of fine particles. In general, these problems are handled either by eliminating, minimizing, or ignoring the fines in the flotation circuit feed. In recent years, however, a considerable number of experimental and theoretical studies have been carried out to understand the flotation behavior of fine particulates. This literature is summarized in four review papers (2-5). Application of the conventional flotation techniques for the separation of mineral fines is known to be uneconomical, and to present several scientific and technological problems (1-5). The objective of this presentation is to examine the flotation behavior of fine particles in terms of their physical-chemical properties and to review the potential techniques of fine particle flotation. Specific reference to the problem areas and research needs will also be included in the discussion.

The idea of automatic or remote control of the mine ventilation process generally, and methane concentration particularly, attracts the attention of mining engineers more and more. The advantages of introducing mine ventilation control systems are breaking traditional reluctance. The change of attitude is not only because of the requirements of modern exploitation technology, but it is also due to the recent progress in development and successful introduction of reliable monitoring systems and actuators in the form of controlled ventilators and doors [1]; [2], [3], [4], [5], [6]. Many 'years of theoretical and experimental studies of the dynamics of mine ventilation processes created the needed base for a proper design of an automatic control system [7],[8],[9], [10]. From these studies must, however, be drawn a fundamental conclusion, which may be regarded as the motto of this paper: An automatic control system for mine ventilation ill-conditioned or improperly designed is capable of creating hazard situations in response to random disturbances, much more, severe in consequence than a traditional ventilation system without any automatic or remote control! This statement is easy to prove if the dynamic properties of the ventilation process are taken into consideration. The ventilation process, as a matter of fact, is described by non-linear equations, and it must be expected that the process has more than one state of equilibrium. In other words, in the ventilation process may exist not only one but also more than one steady-states of flow, of which some are stable and others unstable. In certain circumstances, there may be no steady-state at all, and the process will oscillate [8], [11] , [12] . The state of flow in a network tends towards a steady-state and the actual steady-state established will depend on the initial conditions or disturbances in flow (fire,. etc.), which steady-state from the total number that will be . We frequently observe jumps from one steady-state to another. Disturbances in flow conditions which may cause such transitions are events of random character, occurring very rarely. Concluding, it must be stressed that there has to be a control system adjusted to the ventilation process in order to avoid situations mentioned above. There is only one alternative available and suitable for examination or study of the dynamics of a given mine ventilation problem: either by continuous monitoring of the real process, or numerical simulation of the process using a mathematical model. The advantages of the second method are obvious. This method allows consideration of every possible case very quickly and cheaply in relation to the first method. The aim of the paper is to show again that the simulation of the mine ventilation process and particularly a methane concentration process, separately or combined together with a control system, are real possibilities. A simulation method requires precise specification of the problem under consideration. For example, if we intend to examine a methane-concentration control system, the following items have to be specified: - expected target function of the control system. - structure of the control system. - mathematical model of control system, including sensor system, data preparation system, controllers, decision routine, regulators, etc. - structure of mine ventilation network. - mathematical model of ventilation process, including air flow and methane concentration processes. - pattern of disturbances which may occur in the controlled process as well as initial conditions on a 'start-up' of the system. Using typical computer programs for numerical solution of equations in the mathematical model of the problem involved, we are able, within the adequacy of the model, to simulate every case specified by the disturbances and initial conditions. As a result of simulation, it is expected that the following parameters could be defined: - transient flow in the network. - transient state of methane concentration in working areas. - stability of flow and methane concent¬ration. - stability of the control system. - range of control. - efficiency of control, etc. It is obvious that simulation methods readily allow for modifications to existing systems such that desired results will be obtained. The study that is presented here was undertaken in order to condense information concerning comminution, and covering a great variety of conditions, into one or several rules which would be of use in the development of a systematic theory as well as in many directly practical ways. As the result of this work, the following conclusions appear justified: 1. Rocks may be classified, from the point of view of comminution, into two general classes which are (a) structurally homogeneous, and (b) structurally heterogenous. Structurally homogeneous rocks are those in which fracture takes place through grains and grain boundaries alike; heterogeneous rocks are those in which fracture passes in preference through grain boundaries. 2. If a sized product composed of structurally homogeneous rock grains is crushed, a product results in which the relation between the percentage weight of grains of various sizes and these sizes themselves follows a definite law. This is not true of structurally heterogeneous rocks. 3. Ball milling with structurally homogeneous rocks, and under certain conditions, presents exceptions to this rule. 4. In ball milling with structurally homogeneous rocks, there exists a critical ratio of size of feed to size of balls, above which the machine operates essentially by surface wear, and below which it operates essentially by breaking across the body of the particle. 5. In ball milling, with structurally homogeneous rocks, and when the size of feed grains exceeds the critical size, the particles worn off are of a substantially definite size which depends upon the ball size. 6. In the case of a typical heterogeneous rock, such as Manhattan schist, particles are crushed in such a way that there is a greater proportion of grains of the size that is the average grain-size of the rock than there would be in that range of size with a structurally homogeneous rock. This has been found to be true with all the crushers tested. 7. Different methods of crushing produce grains of different shapes. 8. The phase behavior of a naturally occurring hydrocarbon system whose critical temperature is near the reservoir temperature has been described. The same volume per cent liquid was observed for the firkt time at three different pressures for isotherms immediately below the critical temperature. The shapes of the isothermal equilibrium constant curves necessary to predict this phenomena are discussed and illustrated. INTRODUCTION The phase behavior of a number of hydrocarbon systems has been reported; however, very little data are available on natural occurring hydrocarbon systems whose critical temperature is near the reservoir temperature. This appeared to be the case for the fluid studied here; therefore the pressure-volume-temperature data for this system were determined for preqentation. METHOD The PVT data were obtained with equipment similar to hat described by Weinaug and Katz,1 consisting principally of a two-section, double-windowed gauge mounted in a conktant temperature air bath. The procedure followed was essentially that used by Katz and Kurata5 except that a cathetom-eter, reading direct to 0.01 cm, was used to determine the height of each extreme phase limit. The system studied was formed by recombining -.vapor and liquid samples from the first stage separator of the well. Portions of these samples were displaced with mercury into the cell which had previously been filled with mercury. A predetermined amount of the liquid sample was introduced, while an excess of vapor was admitted. The resulting mixture was brought to equilibrium at the condition of the separator during sampling. By adding mercury to maintain the pressure, enough vapor was displaced to give a gas/oil ratio within the cell equal to that produced by the separator at the time of sampling. The remaining material was then considered to be equivalent to the reservoir fluid. An analysis of material in the cell, computed from analysis of vapor and liquid samples and the separator gas/oil ratio. is given in Table I. The same volume per cent liquid was observed for the firkt time at three different pressures for isotherms immediately below the critical temperature. The shapes of the isothermal equilibrium constant curves necessary to predict this phenomena are discussed and illustrated. INTRODUCTION The phase behavior of a number of hydrocarbon systems has been reported; however, very little data are available on natural occurring hydrocarbon systems whose critical temperature is near the reservoir temperature. This appeared to be the case for the fluid studied here; therefore the pressure-volume-temperature data for this system were determined for preqentation. METHOD The PVT data were obtained with equipment similar to hat described by Weinaug and Katz,1 consisting principally of a two-section, double-windowed gauge mounted in a conktant temperature air bath. The procedure followed was essentially that used by Katz and Kurata5 except that a cathetom-eter, reading direct to 0.01 cm, was used to determine the height of each extreme phase limit. The system studied was formed by recombining -.vapor and liquid samples from the first stage separator of the well. Portions of these samples were displaced with mercury into the cell which had previously been filled with mercury. A predetermined amount of the liquid sample was introduced, while an excess of vapor was admitted. The resulting mixture was brought to equilibrium at the condition of the separator during sampling. By adding mercury to maintain the pressure, enough vapor was displaced to give a gas/oil ratio within the cell equal to that produced by the separator at the time of sampling. The remaining material was then considered to be equivalent to the reservoir fluid. An analysis of material in the cell, computed from analysis of vapor and liquid samples and the separator gas/oil ratio. is given in Table I. "More than 20 years ago, Paques B.V. introduced innovative biotechnologies to recover metals and to remove sulfate from aqueous streams. These technologies find their origin in the exploration of microorganisms involved in the global sulfur cycle. Currently, several sulfur cycle biotechnologies are applied successfully at full-scale. The sulfur cycle is closely linked with the iron cycle, and also the latter offers opportunities for application of innovative biotechnology for the mining industry. Microorganisms of the natural iron cycle carry out reactions that are not feasible by chemical methods such as ferrous iron oxidation with oxygen at pH below 4. Iron oxidation with oxygen can be conducted using microorganisms living at pH between 0.5 and 7 and at temperatures between 0 and 95ºC. Remarkably these microorganisms can also carry out arsenite oxidation at similar acidic conditions and high temperatures. Making use of the extreme features of these microorganisms, Paques and Wageningen University have developed a biological process to precipitate arsenic as scorodite. This biological formation of scorodite is a novel combination of biological oxidation and biocrystallization. Depending on the level of saturation, biological oxidation rates and operational conditions, we could control the formation of the iron precipitates such as jarosite and scorodite. Currently new microorganisms have been harvested from hot springs and rock acid mine drainage to foster the growth of specialized microbial communities with potential high iron and arsenic oxidation capacities and higher resistance to other metals. In our paper we address the ongoing research and development of the bioscorodite process.THE USE OF IRON TO REMOVE ARSENIC In 2015 several environmental disasters related to the release of mine wastewater and tailings occurred. On August 5th, a waste water spill occurred from the Gold King Mine near Silverton, Colorado. A dam holding the tailing pond was damaged and spilled three million US gallons (11 ML) of mine wastewater and tailings, including elements such as cadmium, lead and arsenic, into Cement Creek, a tributary of the Animas River in Colorado. “At their peak, arsenic levels were 300 times the normal level and lead was 3,500 times the normal level” (The Guardian, 2015). In early November, another collapse of a mining dam in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais spilled between ten and sixteen thousand US gallons of water and sediment after a dam failed from an iron ore mine. Arsenic and mercury polluted the Doce River, arsenic levels were found more than ten times above the legal limit in some places of the river (The Guardian, 2015). Waste production is inevitable during Mining. However, a preventive waste management strategy could have minimised waste production, maximised waste reuse and classified waste by their hazardous degree."

O Centro de Operações do Sistema Elétrico da Aperam South América possui um sistema de automação chamado SAE (Sistema de Automação de Energia) para realizar a distribuição e operacionalização da Energia Elétrica na planta em Timóteo, sistema este com mais de 20 anos de implantação. Devido ao alto grau de obsolescência do sistema SAE, a dificuldade de se atualizar todos os componentes do sistema e a complexidade e dificuldade do acesso aos dados, verificou-se a necessidade de encontrar uma forma de disponibilizar os mesmos para os demais sistemas da empresa. Com base nestas necessidades, foi desenvolvido e implantado um GATEWAY capaz de realizar a comunicação com todas UTR’s CORTEX (remotas do sistema), através do protocolo CONITEL 2020, disponibilizando estas informações coletadas em uma camada OPC SERVER para que o sistema PIMS (Sistema de Gerenciamento de Informação da Planta) realize a coleta e armazenamento destas informações, permitindo assim um melhor gerenciamento de energia pelo VIRIDIS (Sistema de Gestão da Eficiência Energética utilizado na APERAM), além de permitir que toda a planta tenha acesso em tempo real às informações de tensão e corrente de todo setor de 13,8 kV, 69 kV e 230 kV.

The approximate production of petroleum in the various fields and for the country as a whole is shown in the following table, the figures for the later months of the year being estimated. Among the developments of the year may be mentioned the finding by the Standard Oil Co. of a small production, about 6290 bbl., at Aguas Blancas in the Province of Salta near the Bolivian border, and of about 88,000 bbl. at Lomitas, near Tartagal in the same province. The Government (Yaciementos Petroliferos Fiscales) in the last four months of the year also obtained about 6290 bbl, from Quebrada Galarce. .The oil found in Salta is of good grade and while the quantity is small great hopes of larger production are entertained.
