Attempting to review the fundamental aspects of segregation in steel ingots of all types in a paper of reasonable length, we encounter two difficulties: (I) the fact that a large number of different physical and chemical effects are involved, and (2) rather incomplete and confusing evidence on certain aspects of detail and mechanism in the freezing process in which the segregation effect is involved. The best solution seemed to be to link together most of the underlying factors into a simplified theoretical picture that appears to the writer to explain most of the observed data, in the hope that this will serve as a reasonably good target for discussion and criticism. Segregation effects, especially in steel ingots or castings, are often divided into " microscopic" and "macroscopic," depending on whether the variations in concentration of solutes or dissolved elements in the iron occur as: (I) a periodic variation over the small distances between the nuclei and the surfaces of the primary grains, or (2) as a larger scale effect involving concentration gradients over distances of the order of several inches, more or less. The reason for this somewhat artificial division is, of course, that it is only the macroscopic scale effect that has much practical importance. About the only effect of practical importance that results from microscopic segregation is the banded structure often left in rolled sections, and even this is relatively harmless in most cases. However, the causes of microscopic segregation also untlerly the larger scale effect, so we must first consider matters such as the formation and growth of crystal nuclei, selective freezing and diffusion, and others that are fundamental to all sepregation effects. Undercooling and Nuclei Formation It is probable that although the degree of undercooling is small in iron, as in metals in general, a certain amount of it takes place, and also that the number of crystal nuclei increases very rapidly with increased undercooling below the liquidus temperature. In practical terms this means that the nuclei number illcreases very rapidly with increased cooling or freezing rate, thus being dependent on the rate of heat flow out from the zone of crystallization. Temperature Gradients and Heat Dissipation during Freezing Each pound of steel evolves about 100 B.t.u. when freezing. In addition to this, the temperature gradient in the solidified portion (required to dissipate the heat as freezing progresses into the axis) necessitates a loss of heat required to cool the solid metal below its freezing range, which is equivalent to an amount of not so much less in magnitude. In a 5-ton ingot, the total would include about one million B.t.u. for freezing alone and about 0.4 to 0.5 million B.t.u. for the gradient, up to the end of the freezing period. THE Comstock Lode is in Storey County, Nevada, and extends in a north and south direction through the towns of Virginia City and Gold Hill, with a total length of 4.27 miles. Its mines have produced silver and gold to a known value exceeding $400,- 000,000 since 1859, when the work first began. More than $126.000,000 was paid in dividends by the mining companies, although much more than this was probably realized from the ore, because many milling companies were independent companies owned by the directors and superintendents of the mines. The milling companies' contracts called for an extraction of only 65 per cent and, as much of the ore was worth $100 a ton and up- ward, they must have recovered substantial amounts for their own accounts over and above this guarantee. Gold was discovered in the spring of 1850 by a party of Normons bound for California. The discovery was made at the mouth of Gold canyon near Dayton, on the Carson River, about 10 miles south of Virginia City.

This paper discusses the computerisation of the drill hole database, some historical records and the creation of a three-dimensional model of the gold bearing structures for resource estimation and mine design at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine in northern Tasmania. The phase of the work reported here commenced in November 1997 and was completed in March 1998. The historical mining on the Tasmania Reef had reached a depth of 450 m below surface when work ceased in 1914. Production up to this time was 854 000 ounces gold. Recent activity has concentrated on testing depth extensions of the previously mined ore structure, to a depth of 1000 m below surface, and the establishment of an underground mining operation to exploit this resource. The lode structure at Beaconsfield is a typical mesothermal vein style deposit. Gold is contained within narrow quartz, carbonate and minor sulphide reefs or veins. Reef width is variable from a few centimetres to several metres with æsplitsÆ or bifurcations being common. The reef averages 2.7 m true width in the economic zones. The key feature of this style of mineralisation is that reef continuity can be confirmed by drilling to a high level of confidence, but the gold grades are somewhat more erratic in nature. The resource estimates were based entirely on drill data. The drill intercepts on the reef were coded for each split directly into a database and these allocations validated graphically. The distribution of grades and widths show an increasing gold grade with reef width for both the drill hole and historical data. The same histogram patterns, mixed populations and overall arithmetic average grade for the historical mine (at 21.52 g/t > 3 g/t Au) and new drill data (at 21.55 g/t > 3 g/t Au) would indicate that there has been no major change in the overall style or grade of the ore from the historically mined areas to the new resource. The reef, host geology, area of historical workings and resource zones at the Beaconsfield Mine were defined as a series of closed wireframes. The Tasmania Reef was modelled as five mutually exclusive wireframes, one each for the Main Reef, Footwall split, Second footwall split, Third footwall split and Hangingwall split. The data for this exercise was extracted directly from the drill hole database, stored in Microsoft Access format. The formation of the solids was largely automated with manual validation and refinements allowing for multiple runs using different interpolation methods and combinations of drill holes. A rotated 3D-block model in the plane of the Tasmania Reef was created to contain the grade model and allow for tonnage, grade and reef width estimates. An inverse distance squared (ID2) interpolation method was used with ranges of 25 m along strike and 125 m down plunge with blank areas infilled with 50 m by 250 m. Each reef split was filled separately using only drill intercepts from that split. The method was independently validated used MIK methods. Longitudinal sections have been prepared showing gold grade, reef width and width +grade. Estimates were also made for arsenic, sulphur and other minor elements. The long sections show three distinct mining zones. A method is presented for the conversion of the resources to reserves by the addition of mining parameters for minimum mining width, minimum pillar, cut-off grade and internal and external dilution. The selection is done on columns within the block model, and allows for all splits to be considered at once. Multiple runs can be made for varying combinations of parameters to test different mining methods and their impact on reserves, mine life and NPV.

The applicability of Bieniawski and Hoek-Brown empirical strength criteria has been assessed for different groups of coal and various types of intact rocks by using a vast number of published triaxial test data from various places. Analysis of individual data sets revealed that the traditional forms of the criteria do not have a perfect agreement with the data. A strong negative correlation has been observed between B in Bieniawski's criterion and m in Hoek and Brown's criterion with uniaxial compressive strength of materials. Both criteria have been modified and empirical relationships have been introduced for coal as follows:m = 62.903 - 34.213 (log pc) 0.9772B = 10.152 - 4.709 (log pc )0.8889Similar relationships have been developed for different rock types as well.A comparison between the applicability of each of the above approaches with the conventional criteria reveals a very significant advantage for new approaches and a supremacy for the Bieniawski criterion in all cases particularly in the case of coal.The modified Bieniawski criterion fits coal as well as different types of rocks with excellent accuracy.The modified Hoek-Brown criterion gives a good result for rocks but does not fit coal data quite well. In other words, Hoek-Brown criterion is not an suitable one for coal.

"Two recent occurrences in Western metal mines in each of which 3 men were killed due to breathing fumes from explosives, have aroused keen interest among mining men not only as to the exact cause of such accidents, but also as to possible preventive measures.In sinking the forty five degree incline Marsh *haft near Burke, Idaho, on May 13, 1920, a round of holes containing about sixty pounds of 40 per cent gelatin explosive was blasted by the night shift upon leaving at 11:30 P.M. It was customary for the night shift to leave compressed air blowers open at bottom of abaft until the compressor was shut down slightly before midnight. Presumably this was not done on the night of the lath as the fumes were so heavy in the shaft bottom on the morning of the 14th that at about 8 o'clock, Superintendent Bergen and one of the shaft men, on reaching the shaft bottom, were overcome and fell from the bucket into the sump containing about six feet of water; and when two other men went down in the bucket a few minutes later to investigate, one also fell into the sump and the other was barely able to roach the shaft collar. The three bodies were later on recovered from the sump.At 400 P.M., June 10, 1920, at the Dominion Mine, Colville, Washington, a round of 11 holes containing about fifteen pounds of 60 per cent nitro¬glycerine explosive was blasted in a fifty degree raise about fifty feet above the main tunnel level by the shift going off for the night. in this mine it was the practice not to try to blow out the fumes until just before the shift went to work the next morning, Although no work was being done on the night shift, one of the raise men, curious to ascertain the effect of the shots, about 7:45 P.M., wandered into the mine (which was a tunnel only a few hundred feet in length), and was missed by one of his companions about an hour later. When three men tried to remove the body of the inquisitive miner, two of them were also overcome; ultimately these two and the first man were removed from the point at which all were asphyxiated, which was practically at the foot of themaise."

Cylindrical specimens of natural dense hematite were reduced to magnetite at atmospheric pressure in H2-H2O mixtures of known composition over the temperature range 1084° to 1284°K. The rate of reduction was measured by the rate of movement of the interface between hematite and magnetite. The diffusion of gases through the gaseous boundary layer, the magnetite layer, and the interfacial chemical reaction were all considered in the interpretation of experimental data. The mass transfer coefficient through the boundary layer was calculated using accepted correlations. Values of the chemical reaction rate constant and the diffusivity of hydrogen in the magnetite phase were determined. THE present investigation is concerned with the reduction kinetics of natural hematite to magnetite by H2-H2O mixtures in the temperature range 1084" to 1284°K at atmospheric pressure. This reaction is the first step in the series of topochemical reactions in the process of reducing hematite to iron. Kinetic information of the simple steps such as hematite-magnetite transformation is necessary in order to have a better understanding of the complex processes of hematite reduction in iron-making. It also has direct industrial significance because magnetic roasting is one of the most important methods in benefication of lean ore.&apos; Although many technical papers have been published on the process of magnetic roasting and iron oxide reduction, very little information is available in the literature concerning the fundamental nature of hematite reduction to magnetite by reducing gases. Hansen et al.2 reduced the dense synthetic pellets of high-purity oxide in CO-CO2 mixtures and determined the reaction rate by weight-loss method. They were able to interpret most of their results by applying the interfacial area control theory developed by Mckewan.3 In contrast, Wilhelm and St. Pierre,4 who studied reduction of hematite to magnetite in H2-H2O mixtures by weight-loss method, stressed that the resistance of the porous magnetite layer to the diffusion of gases cannot be neglected in consideration of the overall reaction rate. In the present study the contributions of interfacial chemical reaction, diffusion of gases through the magnetite phase, and the gaseous boundary layer to the overall reaction rate will be considered. APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE Hematite Specimens Preparation. Natural hematite ore from Vermillon range of Northern Minnesota was selected for the present investigation because of its high purity and thermal stability. Chemical analysis of five samples gave the following average values: 67.52 pct total iron (96.62 pct Fe2O3, 0.28 pct FeO, 0.03 pct metallic iron), 2.53 pct SiO2, <0.07 pct MgO, 0.03 pct CaO, 0.05 pct combined mixture, 0.07 pct loss on ignition, and 0.34 pct other. Cylindrical specimens of 0.93 cm in diam and 2.7 cm in length were drilled from slabs of ore with a water-cooled diamond core drill. These specimens were heated to 1000°C and furnace-cooled. Specimens with silica pockets developed large cracks. The uncracked specimens were heated a second time, and their surfaces were carefully examined with a microscope. Those with hairline cracks or surface inhomoaenitv-- were rejected. Preparation of H2-H2O Mixtures. H2-H2O mixtures were prepared by the combustion of H2-O2, mixtures in a pyrex glass chamber in the presence of a catalyst. Alumina pellets coated with palladium, supplied by Englehard Industries, were used as the catalyst. Purified grades of hydrogen and oxygen were used which were repurified by usual techniques. Hydrogen before entering the combustion chamber was passed through an activated alumina H2O absorption bulb, with copper turning at the top. The cover of this bulb was not made pressure-tight so that any pressure development in the hydrogen line would cause the cover to blow off and also the copper turnings would act as a flame arrester in the case of a flashback from the combustion flame. Oxygen flow rates were measured with a bubble flow meter after purification with 1 pct accuracy. Hydrogen flow rates were measured by "precision wet test meter" and the amount of unburnt hydrogen was accurately measured by a bubble flow meter, after condensing water vapor in the gaseous stream. The Pyrex glass bulb contained concentric Vycor glass tubes as shown in Fig. 1. Oxygen was prevented from diffusing into the hydrogen line by threading platinum wire through pores at the combustion end of gas inlet tube. The glass bulb was heated with a Kanthal heating wire pasted in asbestos paper. The surface temperature of the bulb was measured with a thermocouple and adjusted to remain at approximately 350°C. The gaseous reaction chamber also served as a preheater for gases to avoid thermal segregation. The following sequence of operation was adopted. 1) Nitrogen was passed through the outer concentric tube to purge the catalyst bulb of oxygen. 2) Hydrogen was introduced through the inner tube until a steady flow was obtained. 3) Oxygen was then introduced into the nitrogen stream passing through the outer tube. 4) When combustion had commenced and a flame was visible over the platinum wire, the N2 was turned off.

THE Combined Metals Reduction Co.&apos;s plant is at Bauer, Utah. It was built primarily to treat ore from the Combined Metals mine at Pioche, Nevada. Shortly after its completion, the company acquired the old Honerine mine, and ores from this mine, as well as custom ores from widely scattered districts, are now being treated at the Bauer plant. PIOCHE ORE The Pioche ore, which comprises about 50 per cent. of the mill feed, occurs as a replacement of an impure thin-bedded limestone. The lime beddings are separated by thin layers of micaceous shale containing appreciable quantities of sericite and graphite. The ore is an exceptionally fine-grained, dense mixture of minerals and gangue, assaying approximately 0.03 oz. gold, 7.2 oz. silver, 7 per cent. lead, 15 per cent. zinc, 16 per cent. iron, 29 per cent. insoluble and 1.5 per cent. lime. Of the total lead 7 per cent. is in the form of sulfate and carbonate. Approximately 10 per cent. of the ore consists of chert nodules impregnated with barren pyrite; the nodules average 0.8 mm. in size, and are extremely hard, compared with the other constituents of the ore. Microscopic examination of Pioche ore ground to 80 per cent. minus 150 mesh shows pyrite, sphalerite and galena still attached. EARLY ATTEMPTS AT ORE DRESSING Metallurgists, both professional and those working for private companies, have been more or less familiar with the Pioche ore since 1913; in fact, a total of 35 commercial and plant laboratories experimented with the ore between 1913 and 1921. The work during this period was decidedly negative, it being seemingly impossible to effect a satisfactory separation of the valuable minerals into marketable products. In 1913, it was recognized that fine grinding-that is, about minus 200 mesh-was required to liberate the minerals from one another, and from the gangue, but such fine grinding was not considered practicable at this time.

A study of certain fundamental characteristics of liquid-oxygen explosives has been made. A discussion is given of the factors affecting the life of the cartridge and the relation between explosive strength and oxygen content. The explosive properties of L.O.X. cartridges packed with a variety of lampblacks, gas blacks, and other materials have been experimentally determined by means of the ballistic pendulum, Bichel gage, and measurement of the rate of detonation. DURING the past year, the Bureau of Mines has carried on an investigation of liquid-oxygen explosives (L.O.X.) to supplement the work described in previous publications.&apos; The present paper gives results of the first part of this work, which was a laboratory investigation of the properties of typical combustibles used in L.O.X., and the relation of these properties to the absorption and retention of oxygen by the explosives and their explosive characteristics. No attempt will be made to describe the development of liquid-oxygen explosives, because this phase of the subject has been well covered. The L.O.X. cartridge consists of a paper wrapper filled with an absorbent combustible material that is saturated with liquid oxygen by soaking it therein. On February 5, 1973, Eastern Associated Coal Corp began shortwall mining in their Federal No. 1 Mine, thus marking the first attempt in the United States at modern shortwall mining, i.e., using a continuous miner to extract coal open-ended from pillars 100 to 200 feet wide, under the protection of a self¬-advancing roof support system (1)1/. Since then, four additional shortwall faces have been operated. While the number of face-years of shortwall experience in the United States is limited, this experience has been anything but uniform. Differences in operator motivation, coalbed parameters, geologic conditions, panel dimensions, and face equipment all have contributed to a wealth of knowledge which can provide guidance for the design of future shortwalls. The purpose of this paper is to review the history of shortwall mining in the United States and to assess its value to the U.S. coal industry in terms of the health and safety of the miner, the percentage of coal recovered, coal production, worker productivity, and relative cost performance.

I DESIRE to submit, for the consideration and information of the members of the Institute, the following data, drawings, and tables, showing what I believe will be interesting information with regard to the diamond drill, and its uses in developing mineral lands. I would first say that the results given have been obtained during the past two years by means of two drilling machines belonging to the Lehigh Valley Coal Company, operating on their coal lands in the Mahanoy, Lehigh, and Wyoming regions. 1st. A tabulated statement, giving location of borings, date, progress, total cost, itemized cost per foot, etc. 2d. Section showing strata bored in Nos. 5 and 10 holes at Mt. Carmel, see Plate VI. 3d. Section showing strata bored in No. 19 hole at Hazleton, see Plate VI. 4th. Photograph and description of drill No. 2. From the first it will be seen that the total number of test-holes bored up to May 1st of this year is 24; 9 of these are in the Mahanoy region, 6 in the Lehigh region, and 10 in the Wyoming region, in all of which cores have been taken for the whole distance. The total distance bored is 9902 feet. The majority of the holes have been put down for the purpose of proving the lower veins of the coal series, and have had to encounter the harder rocks of the coal formation. Much of the distance has been through the lower conglomerates, going in some cases through the coarse egg conglomerate, the foundation of the coal deposit, and to the green sandstone and red shale which underlie it. These lower sandrocks and conglomer¬ates are among the hardest known to geologists, and present a formidable resistance to the exploring drill. This fact must be taken into consideration in comparisons of cost of drilling, and when considered will still further improve the very favorable results I am able to show in my statement of costs. In illustration, I will cite the work of one bit when boring in the upper or softer rocks of the Wyoming region, where 280 feet were obtained without resetting, while in the Lehigh and Mahanoy regions, in the lower and harder rocks, bits set with the same quality of diamonds would only bore from 3 to 20 feet before being worn out. A novel hydrometallurgical process for the recovery of silver and gold from neutral leach residue that is based upon leaching with thiourea, is described. Laboratory and pilot plant studies have shown that 80-90% of the silver and 60-70% of the gold can be recovered by:? ( i) leaching zinc calcine with &apos;Spent electrolyte at pH 2.0-3.0 to generate a precious metal-bearing zinc ferrite residue, (ii) leaching of the thickened zinc ferrite with 3-5 g/L thiourea in a six stage carbon-in-pulp circuit, (iii) elution of silver and gold from the loaded carbon with a thiourea- butanol solution, (iv) thermal regeneration of the stripped carbon and (v) recovery of the precious metals from the pregnant eluate by cementation with zinc dust. The reasons for adopting the thiourea CIP leach and the preferred operating parameters for each process step are presented. The requirements for the destruction of any thiourea transferred to the zinc circuit are outlined, and the results of an integrated one tonne/day pilot plant operation at Canadian Electrolytic Zinc are given.

ONE of the most important applications of the zone-melting process of Pfann1 concerns the refining of materials with respect to impurities whose distribution coefficient k differs from unity. The repeated passage of molten zones along an ingot concentrates the impurities for which k < 1, for example, towards the end to which the zones move. It is desirable to know the ultimate distribution of impurity after the passage of an infinite number of zones of constant length; this is also the distribution which is unchanged by the passage of a further molten zone.

A method of measuring oil saturations in cores or sand packs by neutron scattering is described. This method permits local SatUrations to be measured in a core enclosed in a steel pressure vessel without interrupting the flow. calibration data and a saturation distribution measurement obtained with the apparatus are included by way of illustration. Introduction In laboratory flow experiments designed to study the mechanism of oil production it is frequently necessary to measure the oil saturation in a core or sand pack containing Oil, gas, and perhaps brine. It is sometimes desirable that the saturation measurement refer to a relatively small portion of the core, so as to eliminate end effects; that it be made without interrupting the flow, and that it be applicable to a core enclosed in a steel Pressure vessel capable Of withstanding the Pressures encountered in petroleum reservoirs. None of the usual methods of measuring saturation meets all Of these requirements. To measure the gas saturation by observing the apparent compressibility of the gaseous Phase1 would require the interruption of the flow and would give an average saturation for the whole core. An electrical conductivity method is available for measuring brine saturations,2,3 but it is not applicable to oil. A radioactive tracer might be used if a suitable substance could be found that would dissolve in the oil, emit gamma radiation, and not be adsorbed on the sand, the steel core holder, or in an aqueous- phase. The large gamma-ray background from the mass of radioactive oil in other parts of the apparatus might, however, be undesirable. There remain for the saturation measurement methods involving the absorption or scattering of some penetrating radiation produced outside the apparatus. It might be possible to use X-rays or gamma rays; but these radiations would be so much less strongly absorbed and scattered by the oil than by the steel walls of the core holder and by the sand that it seems doubtful that much precision could be attained. In a beam of neutrons, however, there is a radiation that is very penetrating and, moreover, its scattering by substances containing hydrogen, such as oil, is qualitatively different from that occasioned by other materials. It would seem possible, and has proved to be quite practicable, to measure oil saturations accurately under the required conditions by means of neutron scattering. The first, to our knowledge, to suggest neutron scattering as a means of measuring oil saturation were F. Brans and ,. A. Bottema,4 of the Amsterdam laboratories of the Bataafache Petroleum Maatschappij, who made a few preliminary experiments to test the method while they were engaged in exploring the possibilities of neutrons for well-logging purposes. "A systematic study of the structure-mechanical properties relationship is reported for nanolayered composites of MoSh-SiC, Mo-MoSh, Mo-MoShNx, MoSi2-MoSi2Nx, and Mo-MoShMoSi2Nx (x=3-4) synthesised by sputtering techniques. These composites have been studied by nano-indentation and cross-sectional TEM as a function of annealing temperature. As-deposited layers are amorphous except for Mo. With increasing annealing temperature, first MoSh and then SiC crystallize, while the hardness progressively increases until the layers start to spheroidize and grain growth sets in at 900ºC. For the case of Mo-MoSi2, the layers react and the composite deteriorates rapidly. However, MoSi2Nx remains amorphous up to 1000ºC, suggesting that it could act as a diffusion barrier between Mo and MoSi2. In fact the Mo. MoSi2Nx, MoSi2-MoSi2Nx and Mo-MoSi2-MoSi2Nx nanolayers are found to remain stable up to such temperatures. IntroductionMolybdenum dislicide, MoSh, is a potential matrix material for high temperature structural composites due to its high melting point and good oxidation resistance at elevated temperature [1]. The two major drawbacks for structural applications are inadequate high temperature strength and poor low temperature ductility. Silicon Carbide (SiC) being hard and thermally compatible with most ceramics and intermetallic compounds, has been found to be suitable for second phase reinforcement in various structural applications and, in particular, the addition of SiC whiskers improves the high temperature yield strength of MoSi2 [2]. While most of the research in MoSb-SiC composites has been on the particulate form of SiC, laminated composites may offer unique properties. It has been shown that synthetic multilayers with alternating layers of metal and/or compounds may exhibit interesting mechanical properties [3]. Enhancement in mechanical properties by decreasing the wavelength of multilayer spacing has been studied extensively. In general, two types of strengthening have been proposed: (1) Hall-Petch strengthening [4,5], where the strength increase is inversely proportional to the square root of the layer thickness; (2) Koehler modulus strengthening [6], which increases with modulus difference and decreasing layer thickness. In the present study, we have performed a systematic study of the relationship between strength and structure in a number of different nanolayered systems based on MoSh. Layer thicknesses have been varied and their nanostructures have been varied by heat treatment. Previous work on MoSi2-SiC is summarized [7]. In an attempt to improve fracture toughness, MoSh-Mo nanolayered materials have been prepared but are found to react and deteriorate. Previous work has shown that nitrided MoSi2 (MoSi2Nx with x=3-4) is highly stable [8] and so nanolayered composites of MoSi2-MoSi2Nx and Mo-MoSi2-MoSi2Nx have been prepared to assess the' stability and mechanical properties of these composites. The thirty-fifth consecutive National Safety Competition sponsored and conducted annually by the Federal Bureau of Mines, Department of the Interior, closed with several noteworthy accomplishments to its credit. Some of them are: 1. A record low injury-frequency rate of 18.293 disabling work injuries per million man-hours equal to that established in 1957. 2. The third lowest injury-severity rate (4,335). 3. The second highest number of mines and quarries participating (672) 4. A record number of participants finishing the competitive year without a disabling work injury. 5. All recipients of Sentinels of Safety trophies free of disabling work injuries for the first time since 1952.

AN increased demand for brown iron ore in the Birmingham district during the past 18 months has caused renewed activity both in prospecting and mining these ores. In recent years the production in Alabama has ranged from 41,559 tons in 1932 to 639,351 tons in 1928. During the last 9 years about 83 per cent of the total brown ore produced in the United States has come from Alabama (Tables 1 and 2). PROSPECTING Two methods of prospecting are used in this district: (1) test pits, (2) churn-drilling. Usually there is certain quite definite information on an area to be prospected; some of the indications are float ore such as small gravel or small and large boulders known as "dornicks" scattered over the surface, and ore exposed by erosion in gulleys and ravines, which have cut or eroded through the overburden. Often these natural erosions furnish an indication of the thickness of the ore and to some extent of the area of the ore body.

This paper describes mining and milling practices at the San Xavier mine of the Eagle- Picher Mining & Smelting Co. in Pima County , Ariz . It is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods in various mining districts of the United States . The mine and the mine surface buildings are situated in sec . 11 , T. 17 S. , R. 12 E. , in the Sierrita Mountains in Pima County , 20 miles south by southwest from Tucson via the San Xavier Mission and Twin Buttes road ( fig . 1). A well-maintained dirt road continues southward toward Twin Buttes for 4 miles and then branches off northeasterly for 5-1/2 miles to Sahuarita , where the concentrator of the Eagle - Picher Mining & Smelting Co. is situated on the west slope of the Santa Cruz River Valley . Tho mill is connected by a railroad branch to the main line of the Southorn Pacific Railroad between Tucson and Nogales . It is generally assumed that the San Xavier silver - lead deposits became known to the Jesuits and Spaniards in the early part of the eighteenth century . However , no extensive mining operations were conducted by the Jesuits in what is now Arizona before the middle of the eighteenth century . The completion of the Southern Pacific Railroad from Los Angeles to El Paso in 1881 marked the beginning of intense activity in mining throughout the southern part of the State . The San Xavier mine produced 6,000,000 pounds of lead , considerable zinc ( exact figures not available ) and $200,000 in silver from 1897 to 1918 . The Eagle- Picher Mining & Smolting Co. re- opened the San Xavier mine in 1943 and built a 175-ton concentrator at Sahuarita . The capacity of the plant was increased in 1944 to 500 tons in order to take in custom ore . The surface rocks at the San Xavier mine are , in great part , of sedimentary origin . Limestones of various ages comprise most of the exposed sedimentaries , some quartzites and shales also being present . The sedimentaries rest upon coarse - textured , intrusive , igneous rocks comprised mainly of granite and granodiorite . The San Xavier deposit is composed of galena , sphalerite , chalcopyrite , and pyrite . Generally the individual ore bodies are small , discontinuous , and occur as irregularly spaced shoots or lenses . The present mine workings extend horizontally a distance of 2,700 feet and vertically 900 feet . Owing to ground weight, all mine openings are timbered on the levels and all stopes are square- setted and waste -filled .

Tests were conducted on C86200 high-strength yellow brass in order to ascertain the effect of a low level of nickel on the mechanical properties on this alloy. A series of two alloys was studied, one of which had a nickel content of 0.85% and the other with <0.05% nickel. Copper and aluminum content ranged from 62.5% to 64% and 3.2% to 4.6%, respectively. When compared by zinc equivalents, a nickel addition of 0.75% in high-strength yellow brass does not act like copper but raises the tensile strength, 0.5% yield strength and BHN while lowering the elongation.
