M. G. CORSON.'-I am not going to discuss any of the papers presented but merely the question of season cracking of brass in general. Alpha brass has been known for nearly 500 yr. and from the very beginning a number of articles were made from sheets of this alloy by the process of spinning. Metal turning lathes were not yet known but wood turning lathes already existed and the wood turners used to make the mandrils and do the brass spinning themselves. Cases of season cracking were known even then. In 1915 I was connected with a small company doing a certain amount of brass spinning. Before the war its products never gave cause for complaint but their war-time products were cracking too frequently. The reason was, that due to the exigencies of war an excessive speed-up was attempted and the material simply could not take it. Today corrosion cracking of brass is most important in the case of cartridges for small arms ammunition and shell cases for large guns. The cracking takes place in storage and too frequently it is explained by the hypothetical presence of vapors of ammonia. However, I had the experience of purchasing some 20,000 rounds for the old Vetterli rifle from the Swiss government in 1905. The rifle and the cartridges were obsolete for many years and those which I bought were stored for at least 10 yr. None of them was found to be cracked or to crack in use. THE spheroidal form of the temper carbon nodules in malleable cast iron and of the graphite mottles of "mottled" cast iron suggests that in both all the graphite in a given mottle or nodule grew from a single center of crystallization or nucleus.? There is, however, a distinct metallo-graphic difference between the mottle and the nodule; the area of mother metal impoverished in combined carbon by the crystallization of graphite in a mottle is practically coextensive with the ramifications of the graphite, while the impoverished zone of metal corresponding to a given nodule is always larger, and usually much larger, than the approximately spherical mass of graphite crystals forming the nodules. Furthermore, the mottle probably is formed during freezing and the nodule almost always at a considerably lower temperature. Assuming that the nodules or mottles can be used as a measure of the existing nuclei, (capable of germination) we propose to record certain observations as to the graphitizing reaction in the light of the number and habits of growth of these nuclei. The present authors, in cooperation with others1-7, have reported upon various cognate aspects of the problem. It is pointed out that the current concept of pore size distribution is not unequivocally defined and that different methods aiming at a determination of such a distribution therefore do not lead to the same results. A pore size distribution should not be based on the idea that a core should, under all circumstances, behave as a bundle of straight non-interconnected capillaries of the same pore size distribution. This is illustrated by calculations and experiments on the displacement of miscible liquids. INTRODUCTION The introduction of the concept of pore size distribution has been an attempt to characterize the intricate geometry of the flow channels in porous media. As pores in a porous medium are interconnected it is impossible to describe exactly what is meant by a "pore" and, therefore, the term pore size distribution requires further amplification. In the visual method for the determination of pore size distribution "the pore" is considered to be the hole between the grains as observed on thin sections or on a polished surface of the rock under a microscope. In all other presently known methods,1,2 a displacement process is studied and it is ascertained what as- semblaae of straight cylindrical capillaries would show the same behavior. The distribution of the capillary diameters of this assemblage is said to represent the size distribution of the pores of the actual porous medium. From the foregoing it is already apparent that it is useless to try to decide which process or which method of investigation leads to a "correct" pore size distribution. To illustrate this further a displacement process in which a fluid is displaced by another miscible with it will be discussed and the results will be interpreted in terms of a pore size distribution. DISPLACEMENT EXPERIMENTS WITH MISCIBLE LIQUIDS OF NEARLY IDENTICAL VISCOSITY AND DENSITY Interpretation in the Form of a Pore Size Distribution If distilled water is displaced from a homogeneous unconsolidated sand pack by, for instance, a dilute solution of NaCI, the breakthrough recovery i.e., the amount of distilled water produced at the moment the first trace of NaCl can be detected in the effluent water, is between 95 and 100 per cent of the pore volume of the pack. This result can be understood by following in imagination the course of one particle of the liquid. It is advisable, for any heap leach project, to develop an historical metallurgical data base to predict production heap performance before ore is mined and placed onto the heap. A data base would include results from: interval assays, cyanide solubility tests, and bottle roll tests on exploration drill cuttings samples; and those results plus column leach test data on diamond drill core or bulk ore composites. Subsequent larger scale heap leach test data can then be compared to the historical data base, to blast hole composite data during mining, and eventually to production data. This paper does not discuss metallurgical comparisons between assays, cyanide solubility tests, and bottle roll tests on exploration drill cuttings samples, but does discuss metallurgical comparisons from bottle roll tests, laboratory scale column leach tests, and pilot scale heap leach tests on core and bulk ore samples with operating data for three U.S. commercially producing heap leach operations. Provided that representative core or bulk samples are used for evaluation, heap leach test results accurately predict or understate the success of the commercial operation and remove most of the uncertainty from the investment decision.

DOUG HALBE: Our next topic is one that I would think everyone might want to contribute to. I'm sure everyone here has had some experience in this area. If you haven't, I'd suspect you've never really run a mill. This is what we call "Horrible Spill Areas We Had When We Started Up the Plant and How We Fixed Them." Our next speaker has had a really great operating career. He had many years with Newmont in the Carlin area, and now he's executive vice president and chief operating officer of Independence Mining Company: Jim Komadina. I don't have to be nice to the speakers anymore, do I? [laughter] You may wonder why we picked Jim Komadina to give this talk. I was involved many years ago in the start-up of Newmont7s Gold Quarry plant. Jim held quite a responsible position there. I'm not going to say anymore, but I have in the back of my mind this picture of the pump floor and a rowboat and a guy rowing around on the pump floor. [laughter] Jim, was that you? [laughter] JIM KOMADINA: Probably. I wasn't responsible for the design. [laughter] Actually it's amazing. I've seen a lot of these plants and actually had the opportunity to walk around them, so when I say this, "Horrible spills I have seen and done," it's because I've been responsible for more than my fair share of them. But having seen a lot of spills, I will present a little bit of wisdom about how to prevent them.

(New York Meeting, October, 1913.) THE Fremont test for measuring the energy consumed in breaking a notched bar of steel is not so well known in this country as it deserves to be. The test specimen used in this test is about 3/8 by 1/4 by about 11/4 in., notched with a hack saw on the lower side to cause the piece to break at a fixed point. A weight of 10 kg. falling 4 m., and provided with a knife or. chisel which strikes the specimen, breaks the test piece by impact. The residual force in the falling weight after it has broken the specimen is recorded by a suitable device, and the difference between the total energy and the residual energy of the weight (in kilogrammeters) is the force consumed in breaking the specimen. An experience of several years with the Fremont testing machine has shown its great value in readily detecting brittleness not revealed by tensile testing or slow bending testing. In this paper it is proposed to discuss (1) the supersensitiveness of the test as applied to cast steel and (2) its value in revealing the effect of heat treatment under certain conditions.

"The behaviour of rocks depends on their material properties, and therefore it is important that these properties are determined by relevant and reliable laboratory testing methods. The ISRM Suggested Methods are very important documents in this regard, and a draft suggested method exists for the determination of the ’complete stress-strain curve for intact rock in uniaxial compression’. The method specifies the required geometry of specimens and the required testing procedures. The research described in this paper involved the determination of complete stress-strain curves for two materials, one exhibiting the Class I characteristic, and the other the Class II characteristic. To obtain a better understanding of the deformation behaviours in the post-peak region, tests were carried out on specimens of both material types with different length-to-diameter ratios. The results showed that the geometries of the test specimens influence the stressstrain curves in the post-peak region. The implication is, therefore, that the numerical values obtained for the slopes of the post-peak graphs are not material constants, but are geometry-dependent. Explanations for this behaviour are given. These findings have important implications regarding the use of post-peak data, for example for blast fragmentation considerations, and for evaluation of rockbursting potential. The research findings are based on a limited amount of laboratory testing, and should be confirmed by further testing. IntroductionThe most common approach for studying the behaviour of rock is by compression testing of cylindrical specimens in the laboratory. Rocks respond to forces by deforming and eventually breaking. The strength and the deformation characteristics are derived from the stressstrain curves produced. Standard shapes and sizes for the test specimens and standard loading rates are recommended in the Suggested Methods of the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards. In spite of these standards, there remain certain aspects of testing which require further attention. The research described in this paper deals with deformation and failure behaviour of rock materials using stiff, servocontrolled testing equipment. The particular objective was to test the premise that the behaviour of cylindrical rock specimens in the post-peak region of the stress-strain curves does not reflect only a material characteristic, but is influenced by the height-to-diameter ratio (the geometry) of the rock specimen. An additional objective was to investigate the effect of the stiffness of the test equipment on the outcomes of tests."

Al-Mg-Si alloys are widely used as medium-strength structural materials; extrusion is the most common processing route. In the present hot deformation investigation of a 6060 alloy, the microstructure of the alloy has been analyzed in the as-cast state, after homogenization heat treatment and after hot deformation by tensile tests in the range 400-490°C and 10-4 to 10-2s-1 on both as cast and homogenized alloys. After deformation the microstructure of the as-cast alloy exhibited cavitation. The flow curves at the lowest test temperature T show a gradual softening after a stress peak, being more evident for the alloy deformed in the homogenized state in association with a high yield stress; at higher T a plateau is attained which is lower as T rises and strain rates decrease. For each fixed T, the ductility decreases as strain rate increases for the homogenized alloy whereas, for the as cast alloy, it rises with strain rate. Constitutive analysis gives Q = 240kJ1mol for the homogenized alloy in agreement with published values; this indicates a more rapid strength decline with rising T than Al, suitable for good hot workability along with the lack of cavitation.

Mining of As-bearing minerals had resulted in the release of arsenic species predominantly As(III), which is known to be more toxic, and undue exposure to it is detrimental to human organ systems. Many materials have been examined for As(III) removal, but it is still challenging to advance sustainable materials for effective removal of As(III). In this paper, a more eco-friendly and superparamagnetic Fe0-Fe3O4 composite was synthesised and evaluated for heterogeneous catalytic oxidation and removal of As(III) with peroxymonosulfate (PMS, KHSO5). The kinetic removal studies showed that removal of As(III) was probably through a chemical process and the Elovich model best represented the experimental data. The removal capacity for As(III) on Fe0-Fe3O4 with PMS (1.76 mmol/g) is superior to that without PMS (0.83 mmol/g). Combined results from XPS and ESR showed that As(III) was fully transformed to As(V) through catalytic oxidation by Fe0-Fe3O4/PMS and afterwards enhanced its removal. The removal mechanism of arsenic was ascribed to the formation of outer-sphere (electrostatic attraction) and inner-sphere complexes. The adsorbent can be separated easily from water due to its excellent magnetisation (64.5 emu/g) and also has good reusability potential as more than 85% of the initial concentration of As(III) was immobilised after five consecutive cycles. "In response to a severe regional drought and in preparation for the further decline of water levels in Southern Nevada’s Lake Mead, the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) built a new intake system to ensure water supply to Las Vegas and its surrounding communities. In 2015, design began on the Low Lake Level Pumping Station (L3PS) that will move the water from this lower intake, ensuring operability of the water delivery system despite these declining lake levels. The L3PS Project includes a 159-meter-deep shaft, a large underground chamber, and 34-each 152-meter-deep, 2.4-meter-diameter drilled well shafts to be constructed in highly faulted and fractured ground. The Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) delivery method was chosen to facilitate early contractor involvement in the design process to address the significant challenges and risks anticipated on this US$650 million Project. This paper describes the CMAR selection process; the CMAR involvement during design and benefits resulting from that involvement; and the unique collaborative effort among the owner, engineer, program manager and CMAR used to evaluate and select the best design approach, preferred underground construction methods, and coordinated geotechnical baseline report. PROJECT BACKGROUND AND NEED Seven of the United States’ western states rely heavily on the Colorado River and its tributaries for their water supply. The primary source of water for the Colorado River is winter snow that falls in the mountains ringing the Colorado River Basin. Flows in the Colorado River vary significantly from year to year, depending on the amount of snow and rain deposited in the basin. Beginning in the year 2000 and continuing to the present, snowfall has been well below documented historical averages and Colorado River flows have diminished."

History Leaching of sulfide ore was first attempted by the Phelps Dodge Corporation about 1900 at Bisbee, Arizona, when Dr. James Douglas conducted experiments in an attempt to apply the leaching techniques then in use at Rio Tinto, Spain. Although this initital attempt was unsuccessful, research work was continued which culminated in successful leaching operations at Tyrone, New Mexico, in 1917 and at Bisbee beginning in 1920. Leaching has continued intermittently since that date, with material from the Lavender Pit being leached today. The Lavender Pit Leach Dump Stripping for the Lavender Pit was started in 1951, with mining operations on stream in 1954 and continuing to the present. All material removed from the pit has been classified as waste, leach material, milling ore, or direct smelting ore, depending upon grade and degree of oxidation. Lavender Pit leach material has been stockpiled in a single dump, called No. 7 Dump. This dump covers an area of approximately 135 acres and average about 300 feet in height. The dump has been deposited over a period of 20 years by truck haulage and contains several layers, each of which has a permeable boulder layer at the bottom and a compacted layer at the top. Leaching of Lavender Pit material was started in 1956 and has proceeded simultaneously with dump construction. Former leach pond areas and haulage surfaces have been ripped with D-9 tractors before deposition of succeeding layers of ore.

Pre-blast surveys are used to document the condition of a structure prior to the commencement of blasting activities. They provide the best means of determining the pre-existence of visible cracking and deterioration in a structure before blasting is initiated. A small investment in a good pre-blast survey, coupled with good public relations, could mean a large cost savings for a company in the future.

Quantification of site-specific sulfide oxidation rates is crucial to accuracy of prediction of, for example, the environmental impact of a mine site. Sulfide oxidation reactions are reportedly increased by bacterial mediation; determination of abiotic and biotic weathering rates thus requires the establishment of sterile control samples. However, sterilisation often involves exposure of samples to extreme conditions that may alter the physical, chemical, or mineralogical characteristics of the tailings and hence affect element release rates. The impact of various sterilisation techniques, common and novel, on the element release rates from tailings from the Kristineberg site, northern Sweden, has been investigated. Batch weathering experiments indicated that the different methods of sterilisation (autoclaving, heat treatment, ethanol/heat treatment, application of antibiotics, rinsing with distilled water, and γ-radiation) did not greatly affect long-term element release rates. Long-term experiments (>30 days) are thus to be recommended for establishment of weathering rates. Sterilised and untreated control samples showed similar element release rates after ~100 days of experiments; possible explanations include that microbial oxidation is not important under our experimental conditions (Po2 = 0.2 atm, pH ~2.3, 22¦C, 0.01 M HNO3, no additional nutrients).

"Leaching solution prepared from spent battery materials contains large quantities of valuable metals, such as Cu, Ni, Co, Mn and Fe. Therefore, recovery of valuable metals from acidic polymetallic aqueous solutions is of great importance for every plant. In this work, a method is introduced of recovery of Ni, Co and Mn from polymetallic solution prepared by leaching spent battery material. The basic concept includes copper was removed through replacement by iron powder followed by iron precipitation in goethite method. The experimental results show that Cu can be removed 99% at least through replacement by Fe powder, and the removal of Fe can achieve 99% by goethite method. At the same time, the loss of Ni, Co and Mn are about 2%, 3 % and 2%, respectively. The process of differential removal of metals can be selected as the treatment alternative that combines simplicity, efficiency and reliability with low capital and maintenance costs. The purified solution which only contains Ni, Co and Mn can be used to prepare NixCoyMnz ternary system precursor.1 IntroductionNickel and Cobalt are very important metals which are applied in many fields, such as energy material and support material for some new material field. The world demands for such metals is progressively increasing, while raw resources are being depleted and with the constraints raised by the Law and related legislation assigned to protect the environment from hazardous wastes in the world. Nowadays study on reutilization of waste materials has great significance for achieving secondary resources recycling and preventing environmental pollution. There are many hydrometallurgy methods applied for dealing with these wastes, while they usually contain large quantities of valuable metals, such as Cu, Co, Mn and Ni, as well as impurities, such as Fe, Zn, and etc. Therefore, proper treatment of these leaching solutions prior to their discharge is of great importance, so that the contained valuable metals can be recovered.Separation and extraction of metals from leaching solution can use some methods through solvent extraction[l,2], ion exchange[3,4], precipitation with sulfide[ 5] or alkali[ 6] and electrolytic recovery[?]. Among the appropriate treatment alternatives, replacement and differential precipitation is the most attractive treatment that combines simplicity, efficiency and reliability with low capital and maintenance costs."

"Australia is one of the world’s leading exporters of bulk commodities and the extensive use of sampling equipment is key to the successful management of each mining operation. At the process plant, without a full understanding of the feed, product and tails, it is impossible to fully optimise the performance of the plant, such that the metallurgical balance is often open to error. At the port, a statistically correct, bias free and compliant sampling system is crucial to ensuring exported minerals are reflective of their true value and to avoid penalties. Over the last decade, as a result of the iron ore boom, there has been high demand for reliable, representative and standard compliant solids sample systems in Australia. This paper reviews several solids sampling applications at Australian mine sites, the challenges and experience gained and how the implementation of reliable representative sampling systems has provided better understanding of plant process performance, improved plant control and overall benefits to the operations.INTRODUCTION Mining is the primary contributor to the Australian economy with Australia ranking in the top 4 in economic resources for 21 primary industrial minerals in 2016 (Britt, et al., 2017). Australia is one of the world leaders in the export of the majority of its commodities including gold, copper and iron ore (Britt, et al., 2017). Therefore, a suitable and standard compliant sampling system is essential for evaluating plant performance and content verification. At the mine and at the port, the larger iron ore miners in Australia have developed stockpile models to predict the grade of their ore down to individual blocks of the stockpile. This allows the miner to create the right blend of material for sale to their customers and ensures they are not underselling their product or at risk of penalties for impurities or low grade. As an example, the average difference between the benchmark 62% Fe and low grade 58% Fe fines at the time of this report averaged US $30/tonne according to the Metal Bulletin Iron Ore Index. At a shipload of 180kt this would be a variation of US $5.4M. Whilst this is an extreme example, it highlights the economic importance of producing the correct grade product and a recognised representative sample of said product."

Modern tunnel boring machines are subject to excessive cutter wear and bearing failures when used in hard and abrasive rock. In very hard rock, the high cost of cutter and bearing replacement, combined with slower excavation progress, make it more economical to drive tunnels by conventional drill and blast methods. The use of high pressure water jets to break rock provides a promising alternative. Experimental data indicate that the specific energy (the energy expended per unit volume of rock broken) decreases as the water jet pressure increases. Continuous jets are generally limited to pressures below 100,000 psi, whereas pulsed jets from a water cannon can attain much higher pressures. Therefore, the Federal Railroad Administration of the U. S. Department of Transportation has sponsored the design (Ref. 1 & 2) and the fabrication and testing (Ref. 3 & 4) of a water cannon to determine its effectiveness in rock disintegration at very high pressures. This paper reports the results of laboratory tests with pulsed jets against large rock samples at pressures of 125,000 to 650,000 psi and field tests against dolomitic limestone and granitic gneiss at pressures near 450,000 psi. Although initial tests were made with a small nozzle, operating at off-design conditions (Ref. 4), this paper only covers results with the full-size nozzle, including 55 laboratory test shots and 67 field test shots.

CSN Mineração S.A. is the second largest exporter of iron ore in Brazil and is among the five most competitive in the market. Casa de Pedra currently has an approximate production capacity of 30 million tons per year. The fleets of small trucks 6x4 and 8x4 models are responsible for the ore movement, traveling an average distance of 10 km between origin and destination. 116 trucks of this size are used in CSN Mineração for the handling of products. Every month this fleet consumes an average of 550,000 liters of fuel. The objective of the work is to do a fuel consumption analysis by truck through the embedded telemetry system. The reports generated through this system provide the specific consumption of each equipment and also the specific consumption of each Driver. As reports are generated it is possible to assess which equipment had a higher specific consumption and, in this case, the respective trucks with greater consumption are directed to the Maintenance team for analysis and action in the event that a problem is identified in the equipment. At the same time, the analysis of the drivers who had the highest specific consumption and conducted a practical and theoretical training, addressing the techniques for a safer and therefore economical direction, is carried out. In 2019, the economy of fuel consumption type S10 was 204 thousand liters, which represents 9% of all consumption foreseen for the period.

Os parâmetros influenciadores do processamento mineral para a concentração magnética, como granulometria das partículas, fluxo de alimentação da polpa, susceptibilidade magnética, atuam de forma conjunta em uma planta de beneficiamento. Foram analisadas amostras de polpa contendo sulfetos de níquel, cobre e metais preciosos em seis amostragens objetivando medir a eficiência de um separador magnético de tambor de 750 Gauss em um circuito primário de britagem. O rendimento do equipamento na planta industrial foi comparado com os parâmetros medidos em laboratório. Os resultados obtidos da granulometria médias das partículas da polpa para 80% e material passante (P80) foram: 150 µm, 300 µm, 163,6 µm, 146,1 µm, 287,5 µm e 164,8 µm, e a taxa de alimentação do circuito variou entre 30,2 tph e 55,2 tph, com pressão de lavagem média de 1,0 kg/cm3. As amostras foram submetidas ao balanceamento metalúrgico utilizando o software Bilmat 9.5, após os resultados dos ensaios de caracterização: ICP-metais básicos, Satmagan e LECO-S. O percentual médio de recuperação magnética do laboratório foi de 80,1%, enquanto na planta a média foi de 96,38%, com a eficiência da planta em torno de 20,8% superior à recuperação magnética em laboratório.

Extraction of silver from silver mill tailings by an electrolytic oxidation procedure was investigated by the Bureau of Mines. Various parameters affecting silver extraction, such as electrolysis time, particle size, and dissolution of the silver as the tetrachloro or cyanide complex, were studied at 30° C with an electrolyte concentration of 20 weight-percent sodium chloride. Resulting silver extractions ranged from 77 to 90 percent, depending on the tailings being treated. Concomitant extraction of mercury ranged between 90 and 95 percent. Power consumption was 52 to 90 kilowatt-hours per ton for the tailings investigated. Comparative experiments using direct cyanidation resulted in extraction of 46 to 82 percent of the silver and 20 percent of the mercury. Cyanide consumption ranged from 3.3 to 9.4 pounds per ton of tailings, depending on the tailings being treated. Silver and mercury were recovered from leach solutions by precipitation on iron powder, followed by conventional distillation and fire refining steps.

"El presente trabajo describe algunos estudios realizados sobre las condiciones ambientales en operaciones de subsuelo, en 30 minas peruanas. Dichos estudios comprenden un período de 10 años (1949-1958) donde se evaluaron los riesgos de contraer silicosis en las zonas mineras, así como aquellos análisis relacionados con las operaciones de subsuelo. La gran mayoría de minas evaluadas están ubicadas en la región de la Sierra (Junin, Pasco, Huancavelica, Cajamarca), mientras que la minoría en Arequipa, Puno, La libertad y Lima, cuyas alturas oscilan entre 1000 y 4800 m.s.n.m. Los resultados de la concentración de monóxido de carbono señalan que de las 20 minas examinadas, solo 8 dieron un 100% de detecciones por debajo del límite permisible. Mientras que del 12 restante, la concentración del gas permanecía luego de un tiempo de dos horas. Por ende, existe una mayoría de centros mineros donde no se concientiza el riesgo de salud sobre estos niveles de monóxido, y tampoco se ejecuta los principios de ventilación por dilución como el mejor medio de evitarlos. Bajo estas circunstancias nace la silicosis, enfermedad producida por la producción de partículas de sílice libre depositada en los pulmones. En 1935, Cummings propuso como primer criterio de riesgo, la relación de la exposición del polvo con la cantidad de sílice libre y a partir de allí, se adoptaron medidas basadas en este primer criterio de ""exposición-respuesta"", encontrándose que el valor máximo del sílice libre está en los minerales de cuarzo, incluso cinco años antes de su exposición. Mientas que la relación alternativa de ""dosis-respuesta"" es más factible en los tres estadíos de la silicosis, tanto en el sentido de sus concentraciones, como en el número de años de exposición."
