When the disruption of gold mining stopped the usual source of siliceous flux needed by copper smelters , sandstone copper deposits in northern Arizona offered possibilities as a source of the flux during the war emergency . The Federal Geological Survey , while making a comprehensive survey of sandstone copper deposits , investigated the Warm Springs mining district in northcentral Coconino County in August 1943. A month later , J. H. Hedges , chief of the Tucson Division , Mining Branch , Bureau of Mines , examined the operations in connection with an application for an access road . Both investigations concluded that the district , as an emergency source of copper-bearing siliceous flux , had considerable merit , provided high prices for copper continued in effect . Early in 1944 , V. M. Ryan and S. B. Atherley requested assistance from the Bureau in exploring various deposits on their property . The Bureau / drilled 152 holes , aggregating 3,756 feet , on the Petoskey and Mackin groups of claims . This report is based upon churn drilling done under contract from October 7 to November 25 , 1944 .

Ore reserve estimation at the Syncrude Canada Ltd. open-pit oil sands mine in Northern Alberta has evolved since the project's inception. Early techniques followed a conventional petroleum reservoir analysis format, with relatively widely spaced drill holes and semiquantitative grade data. Experience has developed a more standard mining approach, including classification of geological materials by both lithology and sedimentary origin, timely and multi-purpose drill holes, precise analytical data, empirical recovery factors, a computerized geological data base, and an orebody block model. Future efforts will involve enhancement of existing techniques, use of geostatistical algorithms, quantification of confidence limits, and improved control of the ore model by geological parameters.

The rate of reduction of silica to silicon by carbon at 1550° to 1700°C in iron blast-furnace type slag-metal systems has been investigated. In the tower portion of the temperature range oxygen transport in the metal boundary layer at the slag-tal interface is probably rate limiting. A second step, which apparently involves a chemical process in the slag at the slag-metal interface, appears to be rate limiting when the oxygen-transport limitation is avoided. Above 1650°C rate control of the reduction by carbon probably is mixed between the two steps. INVESTIGATIONS1.2 into the equilibrium distribution of silicon between graphite-saturated slags and metals typical of iron blast-furnace practice show that, under the experimental conditions specified, the reduction of silica to silicon is relatively slow compared with the rates of other slag-metal reactions under similar conditions. For this reason, the reduction of silica in blast-furnace slag-metal systems was considered to be an interesting subject for further study. Investigations of the kinetics of the reaction3-5 suggest that several possible steps may be rate controlling, and that the rate-controlling step depends not only on the physical state of the systems but also on the configuration of the apparatus. The main objects of the investigation reported here were to sug- gest plausible reaction paths for the reduction of silica under the experimental conditions chosen and to determine the step or steps which control the rate of reduction of silica. EXPERIMENTAL Two types of experiments involving the reduction of silica from the slag were carried out. In the first, the only reducing agent present was carbon (graphite), for which the over-all reaction is (SiO2) +2C(gr) —Si + 2Co(g) [l] The second type was a graphite-saturated ferro-silicon-iron concentration cell. In it silica in the slag could be reduced either by carbon according to Eq. [I], or by a reaction of electrochemical nature in which silicon was oxidized at the ferrosilicon-slag interface and silica was reduced at the slag-iron interface without the formation of CO. The two types of experiment are described below. Reduction of Silica with Carbon as the Only Available Reducing Agent. The reduction of silica was accomplished by allowing a liquid lime-alumina-silica slag and graphite-saturated iron to react in an induction-heated graphite crucible. The crucible was 2.25 in. diameter and 5 in. deep; it was fitted with a graphite stirrer which penetrated through the slag and into the metal, Fig. 1. The slag and metal charges weighed 350 g each. Pure carbon monoxide at a pressure of 1 atm was maintained above the melt by passing the purified gas through the crucible at a rate of 0.5 liter per min. The gas did not stir either the slag or metal. Temperature measurements were made by sighting an optical pyrometer down the hollow stirrer rod into a 1/4-in. hole drilled in the stirrer blade. As part of a prefeasibility study being undertaken by Newcrest Mining Limited, the Cadia East Implementation Team has developed an access decline to the proposed underground operation. This paper describes new technologies that have been employed in this development, which include: high frequency drifters that have penetration rates one and a half times that of competitors, ensuring minimal increase in drill time, despite rounds greater than 5.5 m;automated drilling used in conjunction with laser navigation and face pattern design software, which facilitates exact positioning of hole collars, lengths and lookouts for accuracy and repeatability; andemulsion charging that reduces manual handling; has variable string loading capabilities, via its hose retraction system, for perimeter control and reduced fume characteristics. A Six Sigma improvement process was used to support the system change undertaken and demonstrated that development rates improved 60 per cent above the comparable single heading benchmark.

The rules of solution of oxygen from H2O-H2-He gas and of nitrogen from N2-H2 gas in shallow melts of liquid iron were measured at 1610o and 1600o C, respectiuely. Concentration profiles were detemined in the liquid iron. Tire rate data indicate that the solution process is controlled by diffusion in the iron melt. The diffusivities for oxygen and nitrogen in liquid iron, as calculated from the present data, are DFe-o = (12 ± 3) < 10-5 sq cm per sec and DFe-N = 11 ± 2) X 10-5 sq cm per sec at the temperatures employed. AN attempt was made by Shurygin and Kryukl to measure the diffusivity of oxygen in liquid iron. In their experiments a silica disc was rotated in liquid iron containing oxygen, and the rate of formation of liquid iron silicate was measured. Assuming that the rate of dissolution of silica is controlled by diffusion of oxygen in the iron, the oxygen diffusivity was computed from the rate data giving Dfe-0 = 6.1 X 5 sq cm per sec at 1600°C. Although this value seems to be of the right order of magnitude, there is no proof of the correctness of the assumptions involved in the interpretation of these rate data. The oxygen concentration in the iron at the iron-iron silicate interface was taken to be that in equilibrium with the silica-saturated silicate melt. That is, it was assumed that no concentration gradient existed in the liquid silicate. This is a questionable assumption, unless it is proved that the thickness of the silicate layer is very much smaller than that of the diffusion boundary layer in the iron. Furthermore, Shurygin et al.1 used the Levich equation2 to interpret their rate data. This equation was derived for mass transfer between a solid disc and a single-phase liquid. The hydrodynamic and diffusion boundary layers in the iron stirred by a disc, via coupling of the silicate melt, may be appreciably different from those predicted by Levich&apos;s derivations. In the present work the diffusivities of oxygen and nitrogen in liquid iron were measured at 1610" and 1600oC, respectively. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Iron melts contained in high-purity gas-tight alumina crucibles were reacted with H2O-H2-He gas for the determination of the oxygen diffusivity and with N2-H2 gas for the determination of nitrogen diffusivity. At the end of the reaction period, the samples were quenched in a cold H2-He gas stream at the top of the furnace. Oxygen or nitrogen contents in the iron were determined by chemical analysis. Two different types of diffusion experiments were perforxed. To determine concentration profiles, a few rate measurements were made using 4-cm-deep melts. The solidified samples were sliced into discs and each disc was analyzed for oxygen or nitrogen. In another series of experiments, oxygen or nitrogen was diffused into shallow melts (about 0.5 to 1 cm in depth) and the total sample was analyzed to obtain an average concentration of the diffusate. In most experiments, 4- to 5-mm-ID alumina crucibles were used. Some experiments were also made in smaller (3 mm) and larger (7 mm) diam crucibles. This variation in diameter caused no difference in the reaction rate, within the limits of experimental uncertainty. To promote the establishment of a stable density profile in the melt, all the samples were suspended in the lower end of the hot zone so that the top of the melt was hotter by a few degrees. Molybdenum wire resistance heating was used. The reaction tube of the furnace was a gas-tight recrystal-lized alumina tube. In most experiments the furnace was heated by an ac power supply. To check the possibility of inductive stirring, some experiments were carried out in a dc operated furnace, with essentially the same results. The temperature of the furnace was controlled automatically in the usual manner. The temperature was measured with a Pt/Pt-10 pet Rh thermocouple and is estimated to be accurate within ±5°C. The iron used was prepared by melting and vacuum-carbon deoxidizing electrolytic "Plastiron" in a zir-conia crucible. The main impurities are: Si 0.004 pct P, S <0.002 pct Cr 0.005 pct N 0.001 pct Zr 0.002 pct O 0.003 pct Mn 0.004 pct C 0.002 pct The gas composition was controlled by constant pressure head capillary flowmeters. Oxygen was removed from the gas mixture by passing it through columns of platinized asbestos (450°C) and anhydrone. Selected H2O contents were obtained by passing the purified gas through oxalic acid dihydrate-anhydrous oxalic acid mixtures held at constant temperature in a water bath. Water vapor pressure data for the oxalic acid dihydrate-anhydrous oxalic acid equilibrium were taken from the 1iterature.3 The flow rate used was about 1.5 liters per min. The whole system was checked for tightness at regular intervals.

In the early-1990s, Tad Golosinski, the former the head of mining department at WASM participated in a review mining engineering courses in Australia. The review team asked various industry executives what subjects they thought graduates needed to be taught. Tad made the comment to me that the more senior executives thought that history and ethics were very important. The outcome was that the mining engineering courses were required to contain at least five per cent content dealing in ethics. The course was to be modified to reflect this. Tad thought at the time the students would think that subjects dealing in history and ethics came from retirees and professionals that were over the hill. So let me talk to you today about ethics.

The Gulf Coast area of Texas and Louisiana produced a total of 47,070,650 bbl. of oil during 1928, a decrease of 7,401,173 bbl. from the previous year. Of this amount Texas produced 39,353,950 bbl., or a decrease of 9,689,296 bbl. from the 1927 output. The Louisiana Gulf Coast produced 7,716,700 bbl., which is an increase of 2,288,123 bbl. over 1927. The decrease in the Texas Coastal area is due principally to the decline at Spindletop. Production at the beginning of the year in this field averaged 53,400 bbl. daily. At the end it had declined to 35,850 bbl. The increase in Louisiana was due to development in new fields at Kelso Bayou (East Hackberry), Sulphur, Sweet Lake, Bayou Boullion and Sorrento. This production was maintained by the drilling of 984 wells. Of this number 736 were located in Texas and 248 in Louisiana. Of the 984 wells drilled, 571 were reported as producers. Distribution of the various completions is listed in the accompanying tables compiled by Oil Weekly. New Developments New developments of particular importance in Texas were the finding of a 5000-bbl. well in formations of Cook Mountain age in the Clay Creek field located in northern Washington County by the Sun Oil Co. ; the discovery of oil at Dewalt in Fort Bend County by the Humble Oil & Refining Co.; the development of commercial production at Raccoon Bend in Austin County by the same company; and the finding of oil in formations of Oligocene age in the Refugio gas field of Refugio County. The most important development in Louisiana was the finding of oil at Sorrento, east of the Mississippi River, by the Gulf Production Co. The importance connected with these finds is not so great in that they opened up new fields, but in the new territories which they open as possibly productive of oil. Eastern Louisiana has been looked upon with considerable doubt on account of the theory which has prevailed among most geologists that the nature of the formations was not such as to produce oil. From laboratory research activities during the past five years, it is now evident that effective flotation separations can be achieved with the high-capacity air-sparged hydrocyclone. The effectiveness of the equipment has been demonstrated on a pilot-scale basis (1 tph) for a number of mineral commodities including coal, copper, gold, and industrial minerals using a nominal 5-cm x 50-cm system with separation efficiencies equivalent to those achieved by conventional flotation machines. The high specific capacity of the air-sparged hydrocyclone (100 to 600 tpd per cubic foot of cell volume for a nominal 5 cm x 50 cm system compared to 1 to 2 tpd per cubic foot of cell volume for conventional columns and mechanical machines) makes it especially well-suited for the pro- cessing of low-grade ore. As a result of these pilot-scale successes, a number of plant-scale test programs are planned for larger-diameter units to establish wear characteristics and scale-up relationships for design purposes. The status of the air-sparged hydrocyclone technology is reviewed in the present paper, including a description of the system, fundamental considerations of flotation mechanisms, general discussion regarding the effect of control variables, and the significance of feed characteristics.

The ferrosilicon grinding unit at the Central Mill of the Eagle-Picher Mining & Smelting Co. near Picher, Okla., was completed in March 1947. The object of the plant was to grind pigs of ferrosilicon, having a size of approximately 1½ by 4 by 12 in. and an analysis of 85. pct Fe and 15 pct Si, to approximately 100 mesh by crushing and wet grinding in a ball-mill classifier circuit. The minus-100 mesh ferrosilicon had formerly been purchased, and was used as medium in the heavy media process for treatment of lead-zinc ores. From the standpoint of dollars and cents, the cost of minus-100 mesh ferrosilicon was roughly $40.00 per ton more than pigs of the corresponding alloy delivered to the mill. Estimated wet grinding costs were considerably below this figure. The possible saving in cost of make-up medium for the cone plant was particularly attractive since, at that time, the plant losses averaged over four tons of minus-100 mesh ferrosilicon per day. Aside from the probable saving on the grinding charge, the need for such a unit was twofold. First, periodic fluctuations in the differential between the top and bottom densities of the cone were thought to be detrimental to metallurgy. There was little doubt that an intermediate differential existed at which the heavy media separa- tion was most efficient, representing a compromise between concentrate grade and tailing loss. Furthermore, if a finer, but considerably cleaner, medium could be obtained, there was the possibility that the differential could be decreased without increasing the viscosity, or conversely, the viscosity of the medium decreased without increasing the differential. Preliminary to experimental work aimed at pegging the cone differential and circulating medium viscosity at whatever values were found to be most efficient, it was essential to have control over both the nonmagnetic content of the medium and the particle size of the contained ferrosilicon. The latter was possible by means of a grinding unit at the mill. Second, whereas the ferrosilicon alloys are made by a number of manufacturers, only two, to our knowledge, grind it in any quantity for use in heavy media plants. For all practical purposes, the Central Mill was limited to one source of supply, a particularly vulnerable position. In case the supply was cut off, it was thought that pigs of the 85 pct Fe, 15 pct Si alloy could be obtained elsewhere, providing means of grinding them was available. There was no published information available covering wet grinding of ferrosilicon. Dry grinding in batch mills and in continuous mills with air classification was being practiced, but the cost of grinding was excessive and the dust condition objectionable. It appeared that primary and secondary crushing was no particular problem, providing heavy duty equipment was used;

The Bureau of Mines developed three types of passive water barriers for suppressing slow-moving coal dust explosions. One type is a modification of a conventional tub barrier and depends on the dynamic pressure generated ahead of an explosion to tilt the tub to release its water and suppress the explosion. The other two barriers operate in response to an increase in static pressure developed ahead of the explosion. Tests indicate the first barrier begins to release its water at air speeds as low as 50 ft/sec, and the second and third barriers will operate at a rise in static pressure as little as 0.5 psi. All three barriers were found to be effective in suppressing coal dust explosions propagating at speeds as low as 100 ft/sec. A plan is described for installing a water barrier in a working mine on a trial basis.

"The in vivo toxicity of vanadium(V) has been found to correlate with the depletion of cellular glutathione and related non-protein thiols. With a view to understanding the mechanism for this observation, we have investigated the oxidation of glutathione, cysteine N·acetylcystcinc and pcnicil· lamine by vanadium(V), using electron spin resonance (ESR) and ESR spin trapping methodology. The spin trap used was 5,5-dimethyl-l-pyrroline I-oxide (DMPO). It is found that the oxidation of these thiols by vanadium(V) generates the corresponding thiyl radicals and vanadilim- (IV) complexes. The results suggest that free radical reactions play a significant role in the depletion of cellular thiols by vanadium(V) and hence in vanadium(V) toxicity. 1. INTRODUCTIONThis communication reports on the identification of thiyl radicals formed as intermediates in the reaction of vanadium(V) with glutathione (GSH) and related nonprotein thiols. This study was undertaken because the biochemical mechanism of vanadium toxicity is still not fully understood,. despite being a topic of current research activity [1-20). As to possible clues, it is known that vanadium is most toxic when administered in its pentavaient state [21), and that vanadium(V) administration into laboratory mice reduces cellular levels of NAD(P)H and GSH [22). While the oxidation of NAD(P)H by vanadium has been studied extensively [16-20), that of glutathione and related non-protein thiols has been paid less attention. On the other hand, GSH and related thiols are important cellular antioxidants [23). Their functions include decomposing lipid peroxides and protecting cell membranes [23-25). Thus any reduction in the cellular contents of such nonprotein thiols after vanadium exposure may result in the accumulation of lipid peroxides which might ultimately lead to tissue injury. With a view of finding the mechanism for this thiol depletion process, we have investigated reactions of non-protein thiols with vanadium(V). Particular attention has been paid to the detection of thiyl radicals, since it has been postulated [l] (but not experimentally proven) that the glutathionyl radical (GS·) might be an intermediate in the reaction between vanadium(V), NADH and GSH. We have used electron spin resonance (ESR) and ESR spin trapping methodology for investigating the reactions of GSH, cysteine, N-acetylcysteine and penicillamine with vanadium(V). The results show that the corresponding thiyl radicals are indeed formed in the one-electron reduction of vanadium(V) by all of the above mentioned thiols."

Technological developments in Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing and improvements in both hardware and software have allowed fiber optic sensing systems to be deployed in a variety of applications such as pipeline leak detection, perimeter security monitoring, and power cable real time thermal rating. Recently, there has been a larger adoption of monitoring of conveyor belts in so called Conveyor Health Monitiring Systems (CHMS) within the mining and bulk material handling industries to identify idler conditions on an ongoing basis. Several attempts have been made to institute sensing capabilities into conveyors with mixed success. However, recent breakthroughs in modeling, installation methodology, and technology, as well as increased understanding of application and industry requirements, have allowed the technology to be deployed at both experimental and commercial scales. This paper summarizes the application conditions and requirements, design considerations, methodologies used, the outcomes achieved, the logistical and field considerations, and the future possibilities of the use of this technology in CHMS using Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing.

As a result of a changing market pattern for anthracite, there is now an increasing demand for steam size and a decreasing demand for domestic sizes. To help the producer meet this new demand, the authors present the technical aspects of the problem of crushing domestic sizes to steam fineness and size. The market pattern for anthracite coal has changed considerably in recent years. The demand for domestic sizes has been gradually decreasing and the demand for the steam sizes has been increasing. The companies however aim for a maximum production of domestic sizes, since these sizes command premium prices. To meet the market demands, particularly in certain periods of the year, further size reduction of the coarse clean coal is necessary. The present practice of multistage crushing in toothed rolls leads to complicated flow arrangements and is high in cost. Data presented herein indicate that crushers with high reduction ratios could be used with a resulting simplification of crushing flows and an appreciable reduction of capital and operating costs. The different types of crushing equipment investigated included the rotary-type breaker, the jaw crusher, the impactor-type crusher, and the Aerofall mill. CURRENT PRACTICE The standard sizes of anthracite are presented in Table I and market specifications require that any given size be maintained with only a limited amount of oversize and undersize material. The 1958 prices of the various sizes also are presented, so it may be seen that size reduction is only performed when dictated by market demands. At the present time the general practice of crushing anthracite consists of removing the top size and crushing it in a toothed double roll crusher to the next largest size. Consequently, to reduce the domestic egg, stove, and nut sizes to steam sizes of pea, buck, rice, and barley, the original material must be screened to produce the three top sizes and each size must be crushed in three separate rolls to the next largest size. Each crushed product must then be rescreened to remove the oversize for re crush ing. Thus a typical operation would consist of scalping the egg size from a mixture, crushing it to stove size, and rescreening the product. This same cycle would be repeated for the stove and nut sizes requiring three screens and three crushers as well as conveying equipment to handle the crushed products. This results in an expensive series of operations to make a product which sells for a lower price. If the three top sizes are crushed in one operation to the smaller sizes then the yield of steam sizes is low and the production of Nos. 4 and 5 sizes is large. These sizes sell for lower prices than the steam sizes. A typical operation is presented in Fig. 1. From the figure it may be seen that the original cleaned anthracite contains 67.4 pet domestic sizes, 26.4 pct steam sizes, and 6.2 pct fines. After multistage crushing of the domestic to steam sizes the composition of the product is 0.6 pct domestic sizes, 89.6 pct steam sizes, and 9.8 pct fines. Extracting vanadium from vanadium containing hot metal by LD process has been proven an effective solution for the utilization of vanadium-titanium magnetite ore, but the systematic analyses of vanadium extraction rate and mechanism by basic slag are seldom reported. In this study, mathematical model of vanadium transfer from metal to slag was formulated and the rates of vanadium extraction of hot metal with basic slag were investigated. The results indicated that the apparent vanadium extraction rate constant, kp, were in the range of 1.33~9.07×10-4g/(cm3·s). And the rate constant was increased with the increase of final slag basicity, reaction temperature and stirring gas flow. The apparent of mass transfer parameter decreases significantly from 0.13 cm3/ s to 0 cm3/ s in 20min, and the data changed as negative due to the decrease of slag oxidation and recovery of vanadium from slag to metal.

Beneficiation of the pyrite concentrate of the Kastomonu-Küre (Northern Turkey) copper ore seems to be attractive due to its high Cu, Co, and Zn contents. Pyrite concentrate were used in the experimental studies. Cu, Co, and Zn were recovered from the concentrate by the sulphatizing roasting, leaching and the precipitation using H2S. Sulphatizing roasting experiments were carried out in a rotary furnace and the optimal roasting conditions were found to be at 650°C roasting temperature and 3.0 h roasting period and addition of Na2SO4 of 3 % for the concentrate containing 0.58% Cu, 0.22% Co, and 0.04% Zn. Then, the roasted product was repeatedly leached with 10 g/L H2SO4 solution. Optimal conditions were found to be 60 oC leaching temperature, 2 h leaching period, and 30% pulp density. Leaching efficiencies for Cu and Co were over 99 %. The valuable metals in the pregnant solution were selectively precipitated by H2S as sulfides. Selective precipitation of Cu, Zn, Co was achieved by adjusting the pH and the temperature of the leach solution. Final metal recoveries of 99.20% Cu, 99.40% Co, and 95.60% Zn were attained. The precipitated sulphides are marketable products. Roasting gases with their 15% SO2 content are suitable for the production of H2SO4 and the leach residues can be integrated with the iron ore processing plant as they contain 57.50 % Fe, 17.70% gangue (SiO2, CaO, etc.), 0.04% S, and 0.06% non-ferrous metals.

"Dome Mine&apos;s No.8 shaft is located about 1 km northeast of Dome&apos;s No.3 shaft and mill complex in South Porcupine, Ontario.No.8 shaft was brought into production in 1984 to hoist ore and waste for the complete mine as well as to service the mine from the 1600 level and below. Access above 1600 level is provided by No. 3 shaft.The rectangular shaft has six compartments consisting of two skips, a cage, counterweight, manway, and a service compartment. The over-all size of the shaft is 14 ft 7 in. by 20 ft by 7 in. (Fig. 1). A 7th compartment for shaft deepening is incorporated in the bottom 500 ft of shaft. The shaft is 5470 ft deep. The loading pocket is located at 5300 ft and the dump 61 ft below the collar.Surface facilities consist of a concrete headframe and a structural steel hoistroom which houses the cage and production hoists . The service hoist is a 12-ft diameter double drum, with one 1750 HP DC motor, and the production hoist is a 15-ft diameter double drum with twin 1750 HP DC motors.Both hoists have a single clutch and a single reduction gear train built by Orenstein & Koppel, and equipped with Canadian General Electric drives. The cage hoist is equipped with a disc pinion brake.The skips were originally aluminum 14-ton capacity, Rolla-chute design with steel liners on three sides and 4 in. of rubber on the back, to absorb the loading impact. The original guide rollers consisted of fixed 10 in. pneumatic tires. The face-to-face units were eventually replaced with larger airplane-type tires mounted on a spring loaded pivot arm."

The Mw 9.0 Tohoku-Oki, Japan earthquake occurred on 11 March 2011 produced a maximum coseismic slip of >50 m near the Japan Trench. To investigate why the plate boundary fault between the subducting Pacific Plate and overriding North American Plate which caused the earthquake had such unprecedented large coseismic displacement and slipped to the trench, Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 343 called Japan Trench Fast Drilling Project (JFAST) drilled three boreholes at Site C0019 through the earthquake fault about one year after the earthquake. Borehole C0019B dedicated to loggingwhile- drilling (LWD) penetrated ~850 meters below seafloor (mbsf) at a water depth of approximately 6890 m. The plate boundary fault is located at ~820 mbsf in the borehole and has been identified as the slip zone during the Tohoku-Oki earthquake. Borehole wall resistivity images obtained from LWD show that drilling induced borehole breakouts are available in a wide depth range above the fault but are not available below the fault. Breakouts are reliable indicators of the orientations of current maximum and minimum horizontal stresses and can also be used to constrain the horizontal maximum and minimum stress magnitudes. As results of breakout analyses, the maximum horizontal stress orientation highly varied in the upper part of the borehole, but has a clear preferred orientation in a northwest – southeast direction in the deeper part just above the fault. This orientation is approximately parallel to the direction of the Pacific Plate subduction. Stress magnitude constraints indicate that the post-earthquake stress states in the hanging wall are either in or close to the normal faulting stress regime. By inferring the pre-earthquake stress state and comparing with the constrained post-earthquake stress state, a significant coseismic stress change was interpreted. The stress change suggests an active slip of the frontal plate-interface consistent with coseismic fault weakening and a nearly total stress drop.

THE large difference in the X-ray scattering factors for molybdenum and manganese makes the o- phase in the Mn-Mo system an interesting one to study with respect to ordering of the atoms. Such a study has been carried out using data obtained from a powder sample, and the resulting evidence for ordering in this compound is presented here. It is not possible, of course, to obtain all the details of structure for a u phase from powder data only. Most difficult of all would be the determination of precise atomic parameters. There is reason to believe, however, that the atomic parameters do not vary greatly in the different s&apos;S and that the precise values obtained from one s structure would then allow decisions as to the ordering of atoms to be made when there is a large difference in scattering factors. In particular, the powder intensities for Mn-Mo s are for the most part in good agreement with those observed for Co-Cr, for which single crystal studies have been made by the authors.&apos; There are a few marked discrepancies in the intensity comparison of the two s&apos;s, and these cannot be removed by adjustment of the parameters. They are interpreted as resulting from a more pronounced effect of ordering of the atoms. Accordingly, the parameters of Co-Cr s&apos; have been used for the calculations of the Mn-Mo intensities. For Co-Cr, the space group is D4h14-P4/mnm with atoms in the following positions: 1—2 in (b); 11—4 in (f), with x=0.1031; 111—8 in (i), with x= 0.3713 and y=0.0370; IV—8 in (i), with x=0.5662 and y=0.2396; and V—8 in (j), with x=0.3160Y and y — -0.250. The unit cell is tetragonal, with an==9.10A and cn=4.74A for the Mn-Mo u phase studied here.

Residual collectors and their byproducts (e.g., CS2) in flotation effluents can cause water contamination and even result in serious health hazards to humans and animals, Therefore, residual flotation reagents should be removed properly before discharge or recirculation into flotation circuits. In this work, four thiol collectors (potassium ethyl xanthate (EX), sodium diethyl dithiocarbamate (SN- 9), O-isopropyl-N-ethyl thionocarbamate (Z-200), dianilino dithiophoshoric acid (DDA)) were chosen as model pollutants. The collector removal, mineralisation and byproduct formation were compared by sole O3 and O3/UV185+254nm. The degradation rate constants of thiol collectors by O3/UV185+254nm were 2~6 times higher than those by sole O3. The mineralisation of collectors was also remarkably enhanced by O3/UV185+254nm. The degradation efficiency by O3/UV185+254nm had the order: EX>SN-9>>Z- 200>DDA. The Z-200 and DDA were refractory flotation reagents. The degradation of thiol collectors caused the reduction of solution pH and the increase of ORP and conductivity. However, the O3/UV185+254nm achieved more evident changes of these parameters than sole O3. During the degradation of thiol collectors, less than 4% of total sulfur in collectors was emitted into air as CS2 and H2S. Compared to sole O3, the O3/UV185+254nm had additionally included UV185+254nm photolysis and O3/UV254nm, resulting in higher efficiency in removing collectors. The O3/UV185+254nm was an effective process in treating mineral flotation wastewaters containing organic reagents.
