BefoRe the Drake well on Watson Flats below Titusville, Pa, inaugurated the modern petroleum industry on Aug. 28, 1859, a considerable industry, based on the manufacture of mineral oils through the destructive distillation at relatively low temperatures (750' to 800' F.) of cannel coals and shales in closed, air-tight retorts, had already sprung up in Europe and America because of the increasing cost of animal and vegetable oils and fats and the growing demand for illuminating and lubricating oils. In 1860, eight out of 55 such coal-oil companies in the United States had plants located in Pennsylvania.' Of these, the Lucesco Works, costing $120,000, situated near Kiskiminetas Junction, was the largest operating in the country. It was equipped with 10 revolving 2.5-ton retorts and 16 stills for rectifying the oil, each holding 2000 gal. The total output of crude oil was almost 6000 gal. per day.2 The discovery of an abundant supply of natural petroleum by the Drake and other wells stopped the distillation of coal oil in America. Most of the smaller plants were closed and others were converted into petroleum refineries. Is recent years, exploration and development by diamond drilling has become a popular attack on the problem of finding new ore shoots and developing extensions of known shoots. Diamond drilling has been used in recent years in extensive sampling of disseminated copper deposits, in preference to churn drilling. At the Harvard gold mine, near Jamestown, California, Philip R. Bradley, Jr., general superintendent, reports that: "The Harvard work was a singular example of the reliance that can be placed on diamond drilling in evaluating an ore body." Drilling at the Harvard mine will be discussed in a subsequent section of the paper. So popular has diamond drilling become, indeed, that many who have had slight experience with drilling are inclined to regard it as a cheap cure-all. This paper proposes to show some of the limitations on the application of drilling and some of the steps that should be followed in drilling programs to obtain reliable results. Cost oF Drilling Drilling has the advantage, over shaft sinking and drifting, of lower cost and greater speed. As compared with churn drilling, the advantage of bringing up a coherent sample instead of fine cuttings for a sample is obvious. Diamond drilling is generally more expensive, however, and more engineering effort is required in combining the average of core and sludge samples. Exploration of drift walls by hammer drills to a depth of less than 30 ft. is generally cheaper than diamond drilling, but beyond this depth the diamond drill is cheaper and more efficient. The principal factor in determining cost of drilling is the character of the ground drilled. Broken ground with many fissures is most expensive to drill. Hard ground is less of a problem with diamond drills than with ordinary machine drills. Hardness or softness affects only the speed of drilling. Caving, easily washed, sandy or clayey ground requires continual cementing and casing, which is the greatest cost problem. Thus, soft, incompetent ground is more costly to drill than hard, massive ground. Cost of drilling per foot in good to fair ground varies from less than $I per foot, achieved in some districts in Ontario, the Mother Lode, and Missouri, to $5 per foot in many western states. In bad drilling ground, costs may range from $5 to $15 or more per foot, thus approaching the cost of drifting. Other factors that increase the cost per foot are: I. Short total length of hole drilled, so that the cost of moving in crews and equipment must be spread over a relatively few feet. 2. Cost of drilling per foot increases with depth beyond about 500 ft.. as more time is consumed in pulling rods' 3. Cost of preparing drilling stations, getting air underground to stations? etc' 4. Inaccessibility and lack of water on the job make for higher costs.

A technique was devised by the US Bureau of Mines to recover coarse [+1.2-mm (14- mesh)] North Carolina phosphate now discarded as waste. Concentration utilizes the difference in particle sphericity between the relatively flat calcite and the rounded phosphate pebbles. Sizing, treatment in a continuous hydraulic classification system, and grinding upgraded a 17% P,O5 reject to 4.5% P,05 with a phosphate recovery of 63%. The CaO: P2O5 ratio was reduced from 2.49 to 1.66.

The eighth annual RMCMI Mine Rescue Evaluation was held during the 1999 Institute convention at the Crested Butte Marriott Resort, Colorado. [ ] Elliott Tsosie, Mary Rowell, Janna Aune, Guy Horton, Art Saenz and Bill Balaz were pleased with the 1999 Mine Rescue Program, The Mine Rescue committee is but one of 17 volunteer committees; this one co-chaired by Bill Balaz, Elliott Tsosie and Janna Aune. There were three evaluators, Art Saenz, Western Environmental; Mary Rowell, ProCare and Guy Horton, Horton Rope Rescue. Nine teams participated and brought 89 participants, 26 spouses, nine children and five teens. The teams were BHP LaPlata, BHP Navajo, BHP San Juan, all from Farmington, NM; Bridger Coal Co., Rock Springs, WY; The Coteau Properties Co., Beulah, ND; Northwestern Resources, Jewett, TX; Powder River Coal Co., Gillette, WY; Solvay Minerals, Green River, WY and Western Energy Co., Colstrip, MT. To observe were members from Centralia Mining Co., Centralia, WA. [ ] Evaluators: Mary Rowell, Guy Horton &Art Saenz The three professional evaluators provided challenging scenarios for the Mine Rescue participants on the grounds of the resort property. Some attending convention were alarmed to see stretchers with "victims" and phoned the hotel switchboard to report the catastrophe. Team members had no prior knowledge of what the scenarios might be and derails were provided only as they arrived at the scenario location, with one exception. Seven to ten or more articipants make up each team. Some teams also ring an alternate and team trainer. For identification purposes, the "victims" wore white shirts emblazoned both front and back with a red VICTIM designation. There was a staged demonstration by three response teams who had not previously worked together. This was enacted on the convention floor following a Technical Session meeting attended by about 200 members. Three response teams from BHP's Navajo and San Juan Mines together with Coteau Properties' Freedom Mine provided a demonstration of their response skills. For never having worked together before, they presented a very professional enactment. This is described at length in the Welcome Session copy. Training sessions were held Saturday and Sunday to enable the teams to prepare for the scenarios. A swap meet was Saturday evening for teams to swap hats, shirts, belt buckles, stickers etc. Each participant received a royal blue golf shirt and ivory cap with royal blue bill. Culmination of the Mine Rescue program was a Tuesday morning Awards breakfast when teams were presented with jade acrylic plaques. [ ] Teams participating in the Mine Rescue Evaluation received trophies on Tuesday morning. Zirconium and hafnium are the twin elements of the periodic table because they are always found together. They resemble each other so closely that hafnium was not discovered until 135 years after the discovery of zirconium. Zirconium was discovered by Klaproth in 1789 and isolated 35 years later by Berzelius. Because hafnium's chemical properties are so close to those of zirconium, it was not discovered until 1923 when Coster and von Hevesy detected it using X-ray spectrographic analysis. These elements occur most commonly in nature as the mineral zircon (ZrSiO,) and less commonly as baddeleyite (ZrO,). They also are found as a variety of other silicates. Zircon was identified as a component in alluvial and beach sands in 1895, but it was not produced in any quantity until 20 years later. During World War I, it was produced as a coproduct of beach sand mining for titanium minerals just south of Jacksonville Beach, FL, and was patented as a refractory. It was not until the 1930s, when Zircon Rutile, Ltd., began mining at Byron Bay on the east coast of Australia, that zircon was first used as foundry sand. Later in the 1940s, NL Industries and Humphreys Gold Corp. began production of zircon sands from fossil beaches in northeast Florida. Baddeleyite first became available as a commercial product in 1916, but never in the quantity of zircon. Zircon holds a unique position as an industrial mineral because it is used for both its physical and chemical properties and as an ore of zirconium and hafnium metals. Australia is the major zircon producer followed by the Republic of South Africa and the United States. Zircon is also produced in India, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, the former USSR, China, Thailand, and Brazil. The location of world zircon mines, baddeleyite mines, and undeveloped zircon ores are shown in [Fig. 1]. World production of zirconium mineral concentrates is shown in [Table 1].

The Bureau of mines evaluated the elution of uranyl carbonate from a strong base resin with a mixed carbonate eluant in a fluidized system. The system consisted of a multiple-compartment ion-exchange (MCIX) elution column with a continuous flow of solution, except for short periods when the resin increments were withdrawn. The exchange of uranyl carbonate from the mill-loaded strong base resin with an eluant composed of 1.0 [M] NaaCOs plus 1.0 [M] NH4HCO3 was studied. The effects of solution flow rate, aqueous-to-resin flow ratio, column diameter, compartment height, initial resin concentration, and column length were examined. The experimental data indicate that for the eluant examined, a resin residence time of 240 minutes is necessary to attain 90-percent elution efficiency. Also provided is a technique for sizing an elution MCIX column form pilot plant experimental data.

An approximate rapid design system for tunnel liners and underground structures is presented which permits the effects of structure geometry and stiffness, rock quality in terms of its deformation modulus, and the applied system loading to be entered as data to produce direct designs conforming to stress limitations, optimum reinforcement requirements and restraints on section dimensions. An 'equivalent column' concept is introduced for modelling the rock mass in contact with the structure. Only the rock treatment is given in detail but the results of sensitivity analyses, with reference to rock quality, for a typical liner design are given and these results related to a number of empirical design approaches.

It is my purpose to give some of the results obtained by an experience of nearly seven years in working ores by the method frequently called the Washoe Process, and in several mills of which I have had charge, but principally in the Owyhee Mill, at Silver City, Idaho, which had twenty 650-pound stamps, and sixteen pans. I shall discuss here merely the mechanical details for working ores generally, subdividing the subject as follows : 1. Preparation of the ore for the stamps; 2. The crushing in the battery; 3. The settling of sand or pulp in vats or tanks; 4. The treatment in the pans; 5. The results obtained in settlers, agitators, and concentrators; 6. The straining of quicksilver, cleaning of amalgam, and retorting; 7. The saving of slimes and their subsequent treatment; 8. The loss of quicksilver. For descriptions of the various kinds of orebreakers, stamps, tanks, pans, settlers, etc., I must refer to the various works on these subjects, prominent among which are the reports of the United States Commissioner of Mining Statistics,and the volume on "Mining Industry," the third volume of the United States Geological Survey on the Line of the Fortieth Parallel through the gold and silver bearing regions of the great West, undertaken under the able guidance of Clarence King, assisted by Mr. James D. Hague and others. In this discussion it will be assumed that the general arrangement of the quartz mill is understood; and the question will be treated how to secure, from such a mill, the greatest economy in working, combined with the largest results. This place seems fittest for a single preliminary suggestion—namely, that there should be double "floors" throughout the mill, so that nothing can sift through and be lost.

The Mines Operating Co.'s plant at Park City, Utah, was designed to treat the low-grade fillings in the old stopes of the Ontario mine. These fillings carry 6 to 14 oz. of silver, 1 to 2 lb. of copper, 0.01 to 0.015 oz. of gold, and a small percentage of lead and zinc. The treatment consists in mixing the crushed ore with coal dust and salt and then roasting in a new type of furnace by combustion of the contained fuel. The roasted ore is leached with an acid salt solution to dissolve the silver, gold, copper, and lead. At present these metals are precipitated together on scrap iron and the product sold to a refinery. The only new feature of importance in this scheme of treatment is the roasting process, which makes possible the chloridizing of ores without any loss of the valuable metals, and at a very low cost. History of the Development of the Process The roasting process- had its beginning in connection with research work at the Utah State School of Mines. N. C. Christensen, Jr., who held one of the School of Mines' fellowships, was engaged in some experimental work on blast roasting. At the same time I was doing some work on the insoluble gold in Mercur base ores. Mr. Christensen roasted some of this base gold ore in his pot furnace, and found that when he mixed a sufficiently low percentage of fuel with the ore, it did not sinter but roasted to a leachable product. We considered this a new application of blast roasting, and proceeded to test out a large number of ores in several different types of small roasters which we constructed.. This experimental work continued well into the summer of 1911. In August, 1911, the Consolidated Mercur Gold Mines Co. installed a small roaster of our design, which we proposed to operate on the counter-current principle, feeding mixed ore continuously on top, and at the same time drawing off the roasted ore from the bottom. This paper concerns the rupture or breakdown of rock formations as related to drilling, completing, and stimulating production of wells, and comprises data compiled from a study of literature and records of treatment of oil and gas wells. and from tests conducted in bores drilled into rock cores and outcrops of rock. Results of the investigation indicate that the internal pressure to rupture cylinders of rock and to breakdown rock formations surrounding a bore in the earth is dependent upon the extent of intrusion of fluids. the position of bedding planes. the ratio of internal to external diameter, the tensile strength of rock, and magnitude of confining pressure, and is independent of the size of bore, degree of fluid saturation. and temperature of rock within practical limits. It is concluded that the mathematical relationship of pressure in bores and stresses in the surrounding rock must not be limited by the simplifying assumptions of homogeneity. isotropy, and impermeability; that the incidence of lost circulation of drilling fluids to induced fractures may be reduced by preventing intrusion of fluids into the small intrinsic fractures along weak bedding planes; and that the magnitude of the breakdown pressure of wells to be treated may be lowered by removal of mud cake. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to present and discuss the results of tests which may serve to broaden the understanding of the phenomena of rupture or breakdown of rock and thus contribute to the improvement of the techniques for drilling and completing wells. including such operations as preventing lost circulation, stimulating production, and placing cement. Since the early recognition of the possibility of rupturing rock adjacent to a well by fluid pressure, the distribution and magnitude of stresses around a well and the internal pressure to cause failure have been expressed mathematically by application of the principles defining the elastic and inelastic behavior of thick-walled cylinders of a homogeneous. isotropic, impermeable material. In either the elastic or plastic state, if the conditions of homogeneity. isotropy, and impermeability were the normal characteristics of rock. there would be no reason to question the validity of the above principles when applied to rock. However. since most rock formations are characteristically permeable to some degree, contain bedding planes and small intrinsic fractures. and are heterogeneous, rendering invalid the assumptions of homogeneity, isotropy, and impermeability, the application of the thick-walled cylinder theories to the behavior of rock formations penetrated by a bore appears illogical. Also the failure to consider the effect of the properties of the drilling fluids, which certainly intrude in various degrees into most rock formations. is further cause for questioning the application of these principles. Even in the case of cylinders of hardened chrome-nickel steel, which would he considered relatively homogeneous isotropic. and impermeable, as compared to rock, it has been observed that the internal pressure capable of being withstood by the cylinders varied with the sizes of molecules comprising the rupturing fluid used. Because of these apparent weaknesses in the theories of the behavior of thick-walled cylinders when applied to bores in rock, and the importance of knowing the true behavior of rock under the influence of fluid pressure when planning drilling and completing procedures for wells, tests were undertaken to determine by observation the actual rupturing pressure of cylinders of rock and the effects of such variables as environmental conditions and characteristics of rock formations, fluid properties, and bore dimensions. It was intended that by these tests the validity of the thick-walled cylinder theories when applied to rock would be determined and, if found invalid, mathematical expressions would be derived for predicting stress and rupturing pressure of rock formations under various conditions. Since the derivation of mathematical expressions has been only partially completed, all of the results of the latter phase are not included in this paper. This plant was built in 1907 at the Bankhead mines to manufacture briquettes by the Zwoyer process under license from the Zwoyer Fuel Go., of New York, N. Y. The building was constructed to contain two units, each of a capacity of 10 tons per hr.; one unit was installed at the time the building was constructed, and the second unit is now being built. The coal used is an anthracite, which is more friable than that of Pennsylvania, and, as a consequepce, a larger percentage of dust or waste is produced, which was formerly thrown upon the slack-pile as waste, but is now passed to the " dust-bin " in the breaker, from which it is conveyed to the briquette-plant. An average analysis of the coal, published by Lewis Stockett and 13. R. Warden,' is as follows: Per Cent. The plant is run under two 12-hr. shifts, the force consisting of 1 superintendent for both shifts, 1 engineer for each shift, 1 briquetter for each shift, 1 helper for each shift, 1 laborer cleaning up for each shift. In the pitch-melting house, 2 men are on duty for one shift. The steam for the engine is furnished from a central boiler-plant, which also supplies steam for the breaker, the electric light and power-plant, machinery-shop, and boiler-shop. The U.S. Bureau of Mines recently identified a significant new source of scandium in an Oklahoma tantalum waste residue (approximately 0.24 pct Sc). Because scandium is a strategic and critical metal which the Department of Defense has classified for special consideration, the Bureau is researching methods of recovering scandium and associated metals from this and other process residues. A variety of operating parameters were evaluated to determine the best technique for recovering scandium. Testing showed that by sulfating the residue at temperatures as low as 150' C for reaction times as short as 0.5 hr, over 94 pct of the scandium converted to a water soluble form. Solvent extraction using DEHPA selectively recovered 100 pct of the scandium from the water leach solution.

A prototype automated mapping and spatial information management system has been developed, and illustrates how a powerful map manipulation capability and a comprehensive display system can be combined using both raster and vector mapping: The concept of a mapbase and information retrieval mechanism, query language as well as text and graphical menus, is introduced. The Geographic Information System (GIS), which has been built around a system for storage and retrieval of spatial and textual data, allows interaction with geographic space represented on a displayed map. The prototype is demonstrated using maps and information of an open pit mine.

THIS paper gives the composition of the iron and slag at different stages in the "air-furnace" process of preparing "hard metal," or white cast-iron, for conversion into malleable cast-iron by annealing. The details of the process are given in an appendix. One of us had been trying for years to work some chemist of some of our malleable-iron works up to a degree of enthusiasm which would lead him to make such au investigation. It would have had the advantage of the greater familiarity with the conditions which one habitually on the spot must have. Failing in this, he made use of an opportunity which presented itself of taking samples here represented, with such fairness as the conditions permitted, holding firmly that a rough approximation to the truth is better than the complete lack of data, or that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. We hope that this attempt may stimulate others effectively to duplicate this work, and thus correct or confirm it. Our results are shown in Table I. and graphically in Figs. 1 and 2. Discussion.-At the time when the first two samples were taken, the metal and slag were still too sluggish to permit fair sampling, and not until sample 6 were the conditions really favorable, because at the time of the fourth sample the metal was not fully melted, and even at the time of sample 5 it was still sluggish. Indeed, the slag was probably very heterogeneous throughout, because it took up silica and alumina rapidly from the bottom, and because it was so siliceous as to be sluggish at this relatively low temperature. This hetero-geneousness is exaggerated in the two samples of slag 8, apparently by the great viscosity due to its extraordinary acidity. Note that the manganous oxide of one sample is about two and

With the trend in the coal mining industry pushing towards improved productivity and greater production, the number and size of longwall panels is increasing rapidly. The development and mining of large longwall panels causes unique problems in the provision of adequate ventilation at the working faces. Because of the transient nature of the longwall panel, and the difficult field conditions for ventilation measurements, detailed pressure and volume surveys are often not conducted around the longwall circuit. This is unforlunate because the highest resistance airway in longwall mines is typically the longwall tailgate, which frequently represents the only unregulated split in the ventilation network. This paper examines data collected from ventilation studies of longwall panels at nine mines. The variation in airway resistance, ventilating pressure and airflow is examined and compared with specific factors such as airway dimensions, ground conditions and support type used.
