This chapter summarizes data on crude nonfuel mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Included also are tables that show the principal nonfuel mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States, and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of volume I and in the State chapters of volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used in this chapter is what is normally termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the output from auxiliary processing at or near the mines. Because of inadequacies in the statistics available, some series deviate from the foregoing definition. For gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, and tin, the quantities are recorded on a mine basis (as the recoverable content of ore sold or treated). However, the values assigned to these quantities are based on the average selling price of refined metal, not the mine value. Mercury is measured as recovered metal and valued at the average New York price for the metal.

A test is described in which the wellubility of porous rock is measured as a function of the displacement properties of the rock-water-oil system. Four displacemet operations are carried out: (I) sponlaneous displaceti?ent of water by oil, (2) forced displacement of water by oil oil in the same system using a centrifuging procetllrre, (3) spontaneous displacement of oil by water. and (4) forced displacment of oil by water. Ratios of the spontaneous displacement volumes to the total displucenlent volumes are used as wettability indicates. Cores having clean mineral surfaces (strongly preferentially water-wet) show displacement-by-waler ratios approaching 1.00 and displacement-by-oil ratios of zero. INTRODUCTTON Most investigators who have reported on the wettahility of porous rock have described such rock as prcferentially water-wet or preferentially oil-wet. In some cases a third classification, neutral wettability. has been used. The efficiency of water floods in each of these wettability groups has been described in numerous publications. Several methods for characterizing porous rock wet tability more precisely have been reported,' " but it appears that because of one weakness or another. none of these has been generally accepted. Early in our studies in this field, it was found that the displacement efficiency of oil by water in a particular porous rock having a strong preference for water was quite different from that in a similar rock having only a moderate preference for water. Thus, there appeared to be a need for a practical, reasonably precise wet tability test. one which could classify porous rocks into 10 to 20 different groups rather than the two or three broad groups listed above. The test developed to meet this need is described in this paper. Also, changes in wettability, as indicated hy this test, resulting from various core handling procedures are discussed. Finally, data showing the corrclation of wettability with waterflood oil recovery for two different types of cores are presented and discussed. Some confusion has resulted from the failure of certain writers to define clearly some of the wettability terms they have used. Accordingly, the following commcnts concerning definitions are offered. The wc t ta-hility of a solid surface is the relative preference of that surface to be covered by one of the fluids under consideration. It is felt that this is the generally accepted definition. The fluids being considered must bc specified (or understood) before the term wettability has any significance. In the work reported here these fluids are water (3 per cent brine) and oil (kerosene). The term preferential wettability is sometimes used, but we think that the word preferential is redundant here and should not be used. Tn line with the definitions of Jennings', a preferentially oil-wet solid surface is regarded as a surface which will show an oil advancing contact angle less than 90" (measured through the oil) in the water-oil-solid system. Oil will spontaneously displace water, if both are at the same pressure, from such a surface. A preferentially water-wet surface is analogous. This is consistent with the wettability definition above. As Jennings has said, frequently the term oil-wet is used to mean the same thing as preferentially oil-wet. However, oil-wet also has been used occasionally referring to an oil-covered surface when the availability of water was limited. To avoid confusion from this source, we do not use the terms oil-wet and water-wet. The performance of RETIMET metal foam as a flame arrester on explosion-proof enclosures was investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines both in laboratory tests and at the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration's (MSHA's) Approval and Certification Center, Triadelphia, WV. The objective of this research was to develop a permissible pressure vent for use on lightweight, vented, explosion- proof enclosures. In laboratory tests, four grades of RETIMET, a stainless steel foam material, were evaluated: (1) 45 NC-7, (2) 45 NC-13, (3) 80 NC-7, and (4) 80 NC-13. Explosive gas mixtures were prepared by a dynamic flow system. Ignition was by a low-voltage arc. Each grade of RETIMET metal foam successfully arrested the flame front in all methane-air tests. To evaluate RETIMET metal foam on large, commercial size enclosures, a multicompartmented enclosure was designed and tested in MSHA's explosion gallery in Triadelphia, WV. Extensive explosion testing revealed that a minimum vent-area-to-enclosure-volume ratio of 11.33 in2/ft3 is required to keep internal pressure rises below 3 psig. The RETIMET metal foam functioned satisfactorily in all tests as evidenced by the absence of external ignitions.

Measurements of the electrophoretic mobility of bastnaesite in aqueous solutions of sodium nitrate reveal that the isoelectric point (iep) of this cerium fluocarbonate occurs at about pH 9.3. These results also indicate that the pH affects significantly the electrophoretic mobility of bastnaesite, which becomes more positive as the pH decreases and more negative as the pH increases from the iep. Computations of solid-solution equilibria for the bastnaesite-H2O system closed to the atmosphere as a function of pH indicate that cerium fluoride precipitates in acidic solutions, whereas cerium hydroxide precipitates in alkaline solutions. When the initial amount of bastnaesite is fixed at 0.05 wt.% (the solids concentration used for electrokinetic experiments), these computations reveal that bastnaesite is the only solid phase in the pH range from 5.75 to 8.55, it coexists with CeF3(s) between pH 5.22 and pH 5.74, and with Ce(OH)3(s) between pH 8.56 and pH 10.12. Cerium fluoride and cerium hydroxide are the only solid phase below pH 5.2 and above pH 10.2, respectively. According to these computations, the dissolution-precipitation processes that occur when bastnaesite is equilibrated in aqueous solutions at different pH values determine the solid phases present in the system. In turn, these processes must affect the electrokinetic potential at the solid-solution interface, and they must be considered for explaining electrokinetic measurements as a function of pH when bastnaesite is the original solid phase in aqueous suspensions.

THE Searles Lake orebody is located in the north- west corner of San Bernardlno County. It is a dry lake bed with an exposed salt surface covering an area of 12 square miles. Recoverable mineral values are contained in the mother liquor below the surface of the lake. Stratification in the lake bed has separated the brine into two bodies which dlffer in composition. Although liquor is processed from both bodies, this paper will discuss only the upper structure brine. Fig. 1 illustrates a typical cross-section of the two commercial orebodies. The orebody is composed of a porous salt deposit 70 to 90 ft deep. The upper structure is separated from the lower orebody by a 12 to 16-ft thick impervious mud seam, as shown in Fig. 1. These salt structures are composed of 55 pct solid-phase salts and 45 pct voids which are filled with the original mother liquor. The brine wells are drilled to the separating mud seam and cased to wlthin 10 ft of the bottom. This is done to draw the brine horizontally from the bottom of the structure. It is pumped with multistage centrifugal pumps Into the plant at the rate of 3 milllon gal per day. The first process that was successful was developed by Charles P. Grimwood for the recovery of potash. The first evaporator unit was built in 1916. In the early twenties, Dr. Morse worked out a process for the recovery of borax. This made the cycle more efficient, as the end liquor could be sent back to the evaporators rather than being sewered. In 1926 the American Potash & Chemical Corp. was formed as a new company, and the entire plant was remodeled. The plant at that time produced only potash, borax, and boric acid. Since then the American Potash & Chemical Corp. has added processes for the production of USP boric acid, refined potash, sulphate of potash, soda ash, salt cake, lithium concentrates, Pyrobor (Na2B4O7) bromine, phosphoric acid, and lithium carbonate. The main plant cycle may be depicted as a closed cycle, see Fig. 2. The raw material, brine, enters the cycle to be mixed with the end liquor, known as ML2, from the pentahydrate borax crystallizers. The mixture of these two forms evaporator feed. Evaporator feed is pumped to the evaporators where it is concentrated, with respect to potash and borax. In the same operation water vapor, sodium chloride, salt trap salt, and clarifier salt are removed from the cycle, see Fig. 3 for potash plant product. The evaporators produce a concentrated liquor which contains approximately 19.5 pct KCI. This liquor is diluted as it enters the potash plant to keep all salts, except potash (KCI, 97.0 pct) in solution. Here the moist potash leaves the cycle at 100°F. The end liquor, known as ML1, is pumped to the borax pentahydrate crystallizers, where crude borax pentahydrate is crystallized and removed as solid phase. The ML2 is sent back to pan feed to be reconcen-trated, see page 207. Note that the only water to leave the cycle is in the form of vapor and moisture in the solid phase products crystallized. Thus there is a constantly cycling volume of liquor to which brine is added. Since the volume of liquor cycled does not increase, the brine is, in effect, evaporated to dryness. This would be true if there were no liquor losses. But, as in all processes, there are always unavoidable and accidental losses which reduce the volume of cycling liquors. The losses must be made up with brine. The concentration process is the beginning and the end of the cycling liquors. In this process there are three evaporator units of the triple effect counter-current type, that is, there are three pans in each unit and the heat flows in one direction while the liquor flows the other way through the evaporator pans, see Fig. 4. During the evaporation process a great deal of sodium chloride, burkeite, some sodium carbonate monohydrate, and a little lithium-sodium phosphate are crystallized. The volume of these salts is so great that they must be removed as they are formed or the process would come to a standstill. Brine and recycled mother liquor No. 2 enter the third effect evaporator pan from the evaporator feed storage tanks, see Fig. 5. A steady flow of liquor is removed from the bottom of the No. 3 pan and is pumped through the No. 3 cone of the salt trap, a clear liquor being returned to the NO. 3 pan. A portion of this clear liquor is pumped to the second effect pan. This process is repeated in each pan. The liquor from the No. 2 pan is pumped through the No. 2 salt trap cone and returned to the No. 2 pan.

Rates and patterns of gas flow in an experimental blast furnace were investigated by measurements, at three levels, of gas compo-sitions and temperatures and by direct determination of gas transit time by a new method employing mercury vapor as a tracer. Infer-ences were drawn about localized reaction zones and the mechanism of the onset of' channeling. LACK of precise knowledge of the nature of gas movement in the blast furnace has always been an impediment to better understanding of the blastfurnace process as a whole. The effects upon operation of various types of charge distribution are very largely brought about by the modifications to gas flow which they occasion. Intelligent evaluation of these effects demands a better understanding of the factors influencing gas flow and the ways in which the flow pattern is altered by conditions existing in the stock column. The same knowledge is required before a fundamental approach can be made to the problem of establishing optimum lines for new furnaces. An experimental furnace is operated at the Bureau of Mines Central Experiment Station, Pittsburgh, Pa. Advantage was taken of experimental operation to conduct an investigation to develop and evaluate methods of study which could be applied later to industrial furnaces. The gas composition and temperature determinations were made as a preliminary study so far as gas flow was concerned but yielded significant information relating to other processes occurring within the furnace. The direct measurement of gas transit times by the mercury-vapor method constituted the major object of the investigation. Development of the mercury-vapor method was carried out while the data on gas composition and temperature were being collected. A complete description of the principle and development of the mercury-vapor method is beyond the scope of this paper but is available elsewhere. The results obtained and some consideration of the method's effectiveness and its potential value in the study of industrial problems will be treated here. DESCRIPTION OF FURNACE The general lines of the experimental blast furnace are shown in Fig. 1. The hearth diameter was 3 ft at the beginning of the investigation, and this was later enlarged to 3 ft 9 in. and finally to 4 ft to increase capacity. Tuyere to stockline height is 21 ft 4 in. The bosh depth is 3 ft 4 in. over which it opens to a width of 5 ft, and this diameter is carried up for 2 ft in a cylindrical section. The inwall batter of 1/2 in. per ft. is considerably less than in larger installations This may have influenced the movement of gaseous and solid materials. The furnace is inside a laboratory building and is charged from outside by a skip and hoist. Feeding into the first of three bell chambers, the stock is distributed by rotating the upper bell, the other two being used to obtain an effective gas seal. Log washers have been used for many years in the washing of clay iron ores, phosphate rock and manganese ores, but not until the past 15 years have they been employed to any extent in the preparation of aggregate materials and fluxing stone. For a machine of such importance where tenacious clay or soft rock must be eliminated, there are few data generally available. The purpose of this paper is to set forth the results obtained from several operations, together with a few suggestions for planning a specific installation. Where the material to be washed out consists of loose surface soil, silt, or small amounts of quickly soluble clay, there is little competition with other forms of washers, because greater power and maintenance are required for the operation of log washers, but where the foreign matter is a stiff clay, such as occurs with high-calcium limestones and in marginal gravel deposits, the ability of other kinds of washers to eliminate completely the hard clay balls is at least uncertain. Then the log washer comes into its own field, for with the breaking and churning action of the logs it will clean out the toughest clay. Even with material from the hydraulic dredge, if it contains tough clay, the log washer is desirable unless the gravel is subjected to a costly soaking and rehandling process. Recently there has been a considerable development in other types of machines to accomplish these results but it is not within the scope of this paper to make comparisons between competitive types, but to present the best obtainable data on log washers only. From the primitive design that gave it its name, a long log hewn from a tree, with paddles forged to shape from strap iron and attached by lag screws, the log washer has gradually been developed to the present all-steel type. As now manufactured, the log washer consists essentially of two built-up logs on which are mounted a series of paddles, carried by shafts fitted at the ends of the logs on bearings fastened outside the enclosing steel box, or trough, which is set at an angle of about 5" to 10" and into which the material is fed. To the Members It has been, and is the endeavor of the A. I. M. E. to serve each and every member. One of the means of letting the membership know what is going on in the mining; metallurgical and chemical fields, and by far the most important, has been our monthly Bulletin. To publish this costs money, and to partly defray the costs, it was decided to accept such advertising as could be secured. The A. I. M. E. is the only one of the American National engineering societies whose dues are as low as $10 per year, and it actually spends more upon the Bulletin and Transactions than the sun total it receives for clues. Hence the need of advertising revenues. We are planning even greater improvements for your Bulletin-improvements that will help you in your work. It will mean a better publication, with more information than ever before. To successfully carry out our plans, we must have your co-operation. We are not asking you for financial, but for your moral support. With that we shall accomplish a great deal. What we ask of you, brother member, is to give evidence to those patronizing our advertising pages, that you not only read the editorial pages, but the advertising section as well, and that you have in mind the welfare of your Institute by consulting the advertising pages when in the market for equipment. The work described in this paper was carried out under the sponsorship of the Foreign Economics Administration and in cooperation with the Departamento Nacional da Produggo Mineral, Rio de Janeiro. The project was undertaken to obtain complete data on the variations in washability of coal to be used for coke manufacture in the steel industry and to determine the economy of preliminary hand-sorting operations. The coal-producing industry of Brazil is in that pioneering stage in which operating practices and methods are just being developed. Increased wartime demand for fuel, coincident with a drastic curtailment of foreign supplies due to lack of shipping facilities, has put a tremendous pressure on the national industry to furnish more coal. Under this incentive, production facilities are being -expanded- and new methods of operation are being tested. Such changes are being developed both by improvement of existing methods that originated in the field and by adaptation and modification of methods introduced from the United States and Europe. These mining conditions and mining practices in Brazil are typical of what the American mining engineer will find in many instances when he goes pioneering into the developing coal fields of the Southern Hemisphere. The producing coal fields of Brazil are all in the southern states of that country. The coal measures are in a band roughly paralleling the coast and extending in a generally southwesterly direction from northern Sao Paulo through the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul to near the Uruguayan border in the vicinity of Bajé. The accompanying map1 (Fig. I) shows the general location of these fields and also the principal routes of movement of both national and imported coal in a late pre-war year (1940). Based on dimensional analysis and a regression of the experimental data and, it was shown that in the inertial and gravitational force dominated flow regimes, 95% bulk mixing times for a slag-less situation can be described via:[equation]Parallel to this, a large number of experiments were also carried out in one of the water models (D=0.30m) to quantify the influence of an upper buoyant phase on mixing. These indicated that mixing time, operating variables and thermo-physical properties of the upper phase liquid can be correlated via a dimensionless relationship of the type:[equation]in which, Q is the ambient gas flow rate, L is the depth of liquid , (AL) is the slag layer thickness and 6 and t are respectively the surface tension and viscosity of the upper phase fluid The dimensional analysis, regression of experimental data as well as the adequacy of the proposed correlations are discussed in the text."

Broadly speaking, the year 1934, one of the most active in the history of the Coast, has been both disappointing and revealing. Of the 18 new oil-producing areas, only two have shown the qualities of a first class oil field. Many of the new areas are discouraging for the horizons exploited, because of close association of gas and salt water, and the absence of any appreciable oil zone. In spite of amply fulfilling the expectations of drilling and geophysical development, the year has fallen far short of the results that normally should be expected from such a campaign. In 1934, the Cockfield zone has been disappointing because its exploration down the dip from the Conroe and Tom Ball fields revealed only such distillate fields as Splendora, Eureka, and the great gas-sand thickness at Katy. The zone proved good at Raccoon Bend. Newer Oligocene and Frio fields in Texas, with the exception of Hastings, were also disappointing, as Van Vleck arid Old Ocean attest. The discovery at Dickinson is not startling. The development of Hastings, Tom Ball, Dickinson and the deep zone at Raccoon Bend will be slow. A new strip of prospective territory of minor importance lying inland from the Conroe trend was opened by the Kittrell discovery. During the year 206 unproductive wildcats were drilled on the Texas Coast, compared with 207 during 1933 and 141 during 1932. During 1934, there were 835 oil and gas wells and 229 dry holes drilled in proved fields, in contrast with 1100 in 1933 and 512 in 1932. The past year's production was actually 60,868,260 bbl., or 2,020,764 bbl. less than in 1933. The present annual rate of Texas Gulf Coast production is about 61 million barrels per year. The daily Texas Coast production decreased 5537 bbl., or 3.2 per cent, during the year. The total daily production at the end of the year was 173,598 bbl. Eighteen wildcats opened up new oil and gas pools during 1934, so that there are now 78 active pools and 3753 producing oil wells. The production of the average well is 45 bbl. per day. The price of crude oil was almost uniform in 1934,

The Guillermo Gaviria Echeverri tunnel and its access roads project in Antioquia, Colombia is a mega infrastructure project that includes a road network with the longest tunnel in Latin America and several short tunnels, the latter being the focus of this study. The design of the project required careful consideration of several special factors, such as the tunnels’ steep slopes of up to 5%, high fire load of 100 MW, bidirectional operation, and short lengths that make it difficult to place ventilation equipment. The combination of all these parameters cause a challenging design problem for the ventilation systems and smoke control of the short tunnels. To address this challenge, a risk assessment study was conducted to support the design of a new and innovative ventilation strategy that deviates from relevant guidelines and standards, like the Austrian RVS [1][5][6] or the German EABT [8] in order to provide a customized solution for this particular project. This strategy resulted a cost-effective solution, that allowed a reduction in the number of required jet fans and at the same time reaches or reduces the risk level compared to traditional ventilation strategies.

A brief review is given to show that catastrophic oxidation of stainless steel in the presence of lead oxide is similar in many respects to catastrophic oxidation as caused by MoO3 and V2O5, Experimental data are presented to show that lead oxide accelerates the normal oxidation process of stainless steel by chemically altering the normally protective oxide film formed on the base metal. Data are given to show that similar reactions occur during oxidation of stainless steel in the presence of MOO3,and V2O5. THE mechanism by which pure metals oxidize at high temperatures has been the subject of intensive research for many years and much has been accomplished towards understanding the processes involved. The mechanisms by which alloys oxidize have also been investigated, but due partly to the fewer number of investigations and partly to the complexity of the oxide systems present, available knowledge is not as extensive as with pure metals. When oxidation processes are further complicated by atmospheres contaminated with sulfide, halide, or oxide vapors, the knowledge of fundamentals becomes meager or altogether lacking. Thus, it is not surprising to find that the catastrophic oxidation of stainless steels in metal oxide vapors of MOO, and V2O5 is not a well understood phenomenon despite the fact that a number of investigations have been undertaken. The literature in dealing with the subject of catastrophic oxidation is primarily concerned with the effects of MOO3 and V2O5, but does mention that other metal oxide vapors, one of which is lead oxide, appear to promote a similar type of accelerated oxidation. While this latter effect is virtually unknown, the deleterious effect of lead oxide is of considerable commercial importance, as it is believed to be one of the fundamental reasons for exhaust-valve failure in gasoline engines. For this reason studies have been in progress for many years attempting to better understand the mechanism involved. Modern exhaust-valve alloys"2containing 20 to 25 pct Cr plus nickel and/or manganese are in effect high-grade austenitic stainless steels exhibiting ex- cellent oxidation resistance in air at exhaust valve operating temperatures of 1100° to 1700°F; yet these same alloys are prone to corrode during engine service because of the conditions attending their operation. These conditions are such that the valves become coated with deposits of complex lead compounds mainly derived from gasoline additives of tetraethyllead, ethylene dibromide, and ethylene dichloride. Literature searches3-7 and discussions with various investigators show that considerable difference of opinion exists as to the nature of the lead-bearing deposits found on the surface of exhaust valves and the atmospheres to which they are subjected; yet, all seem to generally agree that corrosion, a gradual transformation of alloy to nonmetallic products of corrosion, is a consequence of the presence of lead compounds. This majority opinion seems to be substantiated by laboratory engine tests which show that corrosion does not occur to any appreciable extent when lead-free fuels are used. The first observations of catastrophic oxidation reported in the literature were probably made by pfeil,8 but it was Leslie and Fontana9 who undertook the first detailed study of the phenomenon. Their work was chiefly centered on the acceleration of oxidation which took place when stainless steels containing more than 3 pct Mo were heated in air with restricted circulation. These investigators reported that the presence of other oxides near the surface would further accelerate the rapid oxidation which occurred. While they recognized that the effect was attributable to the presence of molybdenum, it was Rathenau and Meijering" who emphasized the fact that the presence of molybdenum in the alloy was incidental to the presence of MOO3 vapor in the atmosphere surrounding the specimens. During the summer of 1980, a field project was carried out to determine the stability of the beautiful and dramatic natural limestone pinnacles (locally termed "Hoodoos") at Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah, when subjected to ground motions and airblasts resulting from proposed strip coal mine blasting. The concern arose from environmental considerations associated with the proposed development of a large coal strip mine which would approach within 4 miles of the park. The pinnacles range up to 150 ft in height and are quite slender, producing a fragile appearance. The remoteness and ruggedness of the area required a field camp, and 4-wheel drive vehicles, helicopters, and snowcats for support. Portable magazines were necessary to store the more than 7 tons of blasting agents and explosives required. In conducting the blasting, great attention was paid to environmental impacts. In the field, a target pinnacle was selected and instrumented with mechanical strain gages, and research seismographs that required helicopter placement.

Meramec Mining Co. has put into operation a crushing and conveying system on its newly established 2475-ft level, 200 ft below the lowest production. To develop this level without interrupting hoisting or mine haulage, a 15.8% decline was driven from the 2275-ft level. A 5-cu-yd LHD diesel loader and a diesel-powered drilling jumbo were put into operation midway down the decline, and were used to develop the remainder of the decline and the entire level. Development of the ore pass system to the crusher required the construction of Swedish-type dumps on the main haulage-ways of all production levels with a minimum disruption of ore haulage. Concrete was handled by both rail-mounted and rubber-tired vehicles. The system features four Swedish-type dumps with control chutes at the lower three dumps, a 42-in. gyratory crusher with attendant feeders, and an 1800-ft long roof suspended conveyor feeding two 5000-ton ore bins. The crushed ore from these bins is conveyed to the lower of the mine's two original loading stations for hoisting. The retention of the original dumping and ore pass system as an alternate route has given mine production a unique flexibility. Operation for 22 months has permitted evaluation of the system from a long-term standpoint.
