Run-off and waste water streams high in dissolved metal content are generated in all mining operations. The metals pose a threat to life due to their persistent bio-accumulative toxic (PBT) characteristics. Hence, there is a need to treat mine waste water effectively. Lime precipitation is the technology of choice through which Fe, as the major metal species, is removed as Fe (III) oxyhydroxides with other metals co-precipitated and/or adsorbed. Sulphates are removed as gypsum or incorporated into the Fe phases. The resulting sludge has poor dewatering characteristics and is deposited in landfills, with an inherent risk of returning the Fe back into the water cycle through leaching. This study seeks to understand the mechanisms behind the formation of this sludge in terms of product quality. The relationship between process conditions and product characteristics has been investigated through exploring the effect of Fe (III) concentration on the precipitate product characteristics (particle size distribution (PSD), size, morphology and structure) and quality (in terms of filterability, settling ability, etc.) in a simplified system. Neutralisation of acidic synthetic aqueous Fe (III) sulphate streams containing 50, 400 and 800 mg/L Fe(III), respectively, was effected by mixing it in a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) with dissolved calcium hydroxide for pH control at a residence time of 15 minutes. Precipitate samples analysed for morphology and PSD, using nanoSEM and Zetasizer respectively, showed a general decrease in PSD and zeta potential with increases in feed Fe (III) concentration. These results were used to infer the particle size enlargement mechanisms of Fe (III) oxyhydroxide precipitates under a given set of operating conditions. Preliminary product quality results indicate that a high concentration (800 mg/L) leads to the rapid formation of metastable precursors with poor product quality, whilst a low concentration (50 mg/L) leads to formation of thermodynamically more stable precipitates with good product quality. The approach demonstrates a potential route forward in terms of linking operating conditions to the attainment of desirable characteristics rather than specific precipitate phases which are difficult to identify.

The mineral industry, so important to industrial development, faces a major challenge in creating the most effective financial structure to provide funds essential for seeking, evaluating, developing, and extracting minerals. The acquisition of funds for mineral development and plant erection do not differ greatly from fund-raising in nonmineral ventures because risks are essentially comparable. High-risk exploration funds, however, are more difficult for the mineral industry to acquire. With the world's ever-increasing appetite for minerals, the internally generated cash of major oil and mining companies cannot be expected solely to maintain the world's mineral supply. The augmented costs, risks, and difficulties of exploration have been shared increasingly by the smaller independent operator and by private and public participation drilling programs within the petroleum industry over the past 30 years. Only recently has the mining industry awakened to the need for utilizing exploration and development funds derived from sources other than established mining and banking circles. Almost from its inception, the oil industry was forced to drill deep holes through overburden without the aid of a mineral "outcropping" which required geological, and in subsequent years, geophysical interpretation. The poorly financed, nontechnical prospector, who depended on a mineral outcrop, was not to play an important role in oil exploration as he did in mining. Because of the high cost of drilling and the demands for technical judgment to locate an exploration drill hole, corporate and sophisticated private funds generally financed oil discoveries. When external funds were subsequently required, these financially sophisticated explorers would turn to the banking community from which came numerous ingenious innovations, taking cognizance of existing tax laws. Like the oil explorer, the miner is now faced with probing below the surface, relying solely on regional geology and geophysical anomalies. The day is gone, for practical purposes, when the prospector discovers a deposit from a mineral outcrop. There is little doubt that the mining industry will now follow the course taken by the petroleum industry in acquiring external funds if it is to meet the future raw material requirements of the world. The oil industry has been able to attract bank funds more readily than the mining industry after a mineral discovery has been made because: (1) with few exceptions, an oil discovery can be placed into commercial production and will generate cash at much less expense and time than a mine; and (2) generally, costs of oil production, the value

The term "slime-coating" is not new in the art of flotation; the phenomenon has been observed and described by Taggart;(l)† Taggart, Taylor, and Ince;(2) and by Ince.(3) Notwithstanding that flotation was introduced for the treatment of finely crushed ore, the adverse effects of slimes have been recognized since the earliest days of the process, and the Elmore, Delprat, Potter, and other processes actually specified desliming of the ore prior to treatment. The cause of this trouble has been studied and described by Taggart;(1) Taggart, Taylor, and Ince;(2) Ince;(3) Morrow and Griswold;(4) and by Gaudin and Malozemoff.(5) Old Theory of Slime-coatings At present, so far as published work shows, there seems to be but one theory for the mechanism of slime-coatings. Ince(3) states that they are due to attraction between electrostatic charges of opposite sign on the sulfide and on the slime particles, supporting this theory by migration experiments in the Burton tube. He also used the microscope in conjunction with a glass cell employed by Beans and Eastlack(6) in studying migration, but met with interference from endosmosis. Several attempts have been made in the Department of Mineral Dressing at Columbia University to duplicate Ince's experiments with the Burton tube, but the results have never been convincing. Formation of precipitates which settled through the pulp levels, and evolution of gas at the electrodes, which disturbed the interface between the pulp and the distilled water above it, seriously interfered with observations. However, by use of the migration cell shown in Fig. 1, endosmosis effects and the disturbances due to precipitation and gas evolution were avoided, and distinct and reproducible migrations or absence of migration were observed. The cell was made of bakelite and had platinum electrodes. A study was undertaken to remove the Se from waste solutions using a raw form of the biomass called Iota Chips derived from the seaweed, Eucheuma spinosum. Removal of Se from solutions was investigated as a function of time, pH, conc. of Se in solution (0.1 to 100 ppm) and lota Chips to liquid ratios of 10-2 to 10-5. For solutions containing initial conc. of 0.1 ppm Se, with the addition of Iota Chips at a solid to liquid ratio of 10-3, the Se conc. decreased to 0.03 ppm in about 3 hours. Iota Chips absorption capacity to the Se and its application to the treatment of the metallurgical processing effluents are discussed.

The Fabrica Mine of the Brazilian iron ore company Ferteco mines on an extremely inhomogenous ore deposit. A large amount of the crude ore consists of fines minus 100 micron which cannot be sold without further treatment because of its chemical and physical properties. In order to make full use of the mined crude ore an expansion program has been realized which incorporates among others a concentrator to produce classified blast furnace ore , sinter feed and pellet feed. The pellet feed is converted in a 2.5 million tons per year Lurgi Dravo plant into high grade pellets. The paper discusses the selection of the concentration process, the pelletizing process and describes the experiences with the operation plant during the startup and the first years of operation.

THE legislatures of New York and New Jersey, determined in 1919 that a vehicular tunnel should be built under the Hudson River. On July 1, 1919, an engineering staff was organized with the late Clifford M. Holland as chief engineer, and this staff was given a number of problems to solve, such as location, size, type of tunnel, method of construction, method of ventilation and cost. After a period of preliminary investigations and studies it was decided to build the tunnel at Canal St., New York, connecting 12th St., Jersey City. This is the center of the heaviest traffic across the Hudson River. It was also decided to build two tunnels-one for west-bound traffic and one for east-bound traffic-the tunnels to be of cast iron, built up of segments and bolted together, each tunnel to have a roadway 20 ft. wide and a clear heat room of 13 ft., 6 in. This is to provide for two lines of vehicles in each direction. The tunnels have an exterior diameter of 29 ft., 6 in. The interior lining is of concrete, the sidewalls tiled with a vitreous white tile and the roadways paved with granite block. The entrances and exits at both ends are separated by two blocks so as to reduce traffic congestion.

The effectiveness of two synthesized ionic liquids, 1-(benzyloxy)-1-oxopropan-2-aminium 4-methylbenzenesulfonate (1-BOPAMS) and 4-(benzyloxy)-4-oxobutan-1-aminium 4-methylbenzenesulfonate (4-BOBAMS), were evaluated for mild steel corrosion inhibition in 1.0 M hydro-chloric acid solution, using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization (PDP), and gravimetric techniques. Organic moieties responsible for the adsorption process on mild steel surface were investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Gravimetric analysis revealed that the inhibition efficiency of 1-BOPAMS and 4-BOBAMS increased with concentration, with maximum inhibition values of 90.32% and 97.91%, respectively, at the highest concentration of the inhibitors. Gibbs free energy (ΔG°ads) values indicated a strong interaction between the mild steel surface and the molecules of the ionic liquids, and that the adsorption process was spontaneous. These values also show that the inhibitive nature of ionic liquids against mild steel corrosion is caused by a mixedtype of adsorption film formed on the steel surface. The Langmuir adsorption isotherm was used to describe the adsorption of ionic liquid molecules onto the mild steel surface. Polarization curves showed that 1-BOPAMS and 4-BOBAMS have a similar effect on both the anodic and cathodic half-reactions, indicating that they prevent the dissolution of mild steel through both physical and chemical process. Nyquist plots were defined by incomplete semicircle capacitive loops, showing that the charge transfer mechanism controls the corrosion of mild steel in acidic solution.

A simple graphical technique is presented for rapidly determining the ratio of resolved shear stress on slip systems in single crystals to the applied stress (Schmid factor) for various simple states of stress. Master plots are presented which, when used in conjunction with an appropriate stereo-graphic projection, allow one to determine the Schmid factor for all slip systems in a crystal of given orientation. It is shown that one such plot suffices for simple tension or compression, flex-ural bending, and biaxial compression, while a combination of two different plots must be used for torsion and simple shear. STUDIES of the deformation behavior of single crystals are most valuable when the applied stresses are resolved onto the various slip systems of the crystal. A careful study of the available slip systems and proper selection of the state of stress used and the specimen orientation can then yield quantitative information about the probability of specific dislocation reactions, the strength of barriers to plastic flow, and the mechanisms of yielding and flow in general. It is the purpose of this work to analyze some common states of stress used in deformation studies and to present a simplified way of determining for these cases the ratio of the resolved shear stress on the slip systems to the applied stress (Schmid factor). I) CALCULATIONS We first define two orthogonal coordinate systems: one based on the specimen geometry (a right circular cylinder of radius, R, is considered here) and one based on the particular slip system of interest. The unit vectors and angles specifying the two coordinate systems and the relationship between them are listed in Table I. The relationships among the various angles and unit vectors are shown on a stereographic projection in Fig. 1. The adsorption capacity of peat collected from a proposed mine development in northern Sweden has been determined using laboratory column experiments in which peat was irrigated with a simulated (acidic) waste rock dump leachate. The simulated leachate was made using a hydrogen peroxide leach of composite waste rock from the proposed mine development. The waste rock samples were composited in proportion to their predicted extractable tonnage for the mine development in order to generate a more representative leachate solution for the waste rock facility. As expected the test revealed that the peat material shows a very high affinity for attenuation with greater than 70% of Co, 90% of Ni and 95% of Cu removed from influent solutions through the majority of the tests demonstrating the potential benefits in mine water treatment. In contrast, it was found that Fe is initially released from the peat at concentrations up to 100 mg/L and can mean potential problems for the water released depending on the receiving environment. The exact mechanisms for Fe release is uncertain, though it is suspected that ion exchange / competitive desorption is responsible. Inspection of the laboratory results and drainage data from the natural peat wetland receiving drainage during overburden prestriping and mine development at the mine site are comparable, confirm the validity of the experiments, and further emphasize the potential for future use of pre-stripped peat material in managing water quality.

The object of the present paper is to suggest injecting into the hearths of iron blast furnaces, whose temperature has become unduly lowered, some form of fuel whose calorific intensity, under the peculiar conditions existing there, is considerably higher than than of liquid petroleum, the rose of this substance for melting out chills having grievonsly disappointed the high hopes which were at first entertained of it. A chill being a fall of the temperature below that needed for the complete liquefaction of the slag, which requires, according to Plattner, about 1800' C., one would suppose that the chief thing to be accomplished in curing it would be to raise the temperature in the crucible of the furnace. The most obvious ways of doing this seem to be to raise the temperature of the blast, and to increase the amount of fuel in the crucible itself. Simply increasing the rate at which the blast enters the furnace, if carried beyond a certain point, should lower the temperature in the crucible. The existence of a chill shows that the fuel is arriving too slowly at the tuyeres. If air be introduced so rapidly as to he in excess of that required for the combustion of the fuel, all that excess will simply lower the temperature around the tuyeres, carrying the region of intense heat upwards, and weakening its intensity by increasing its size. Up to a certain point, increasing the rate of introducing the blast will increase practically pari passu the rate at which the fuel reaches the tuyeres. But when mechanical obstructions, which so often accompany chills, retard the descent of the fuel, there must be a point beyond which this does not hold good, and beyond which farther

Abstract - Coupled gamma-ray spectrometric and lithogeochemical studies throughout the Heath Steele Mines area, Bathurst Camp, New Brunswick, indicate that primary and secondary geochemical differences exist between the stratigraphic footwall and hangingwall crystal tuff units which host the massive sulfide deposits. Of particular interest is Th, and to a lesser extent, Zr and Y, which are more concentrated in the hangingwall than the footwall crystal tuffs, whereas the opposite is true for TiO2. This expands on earlier lithogeochemical-chemostratigraphic results concentrated in the eastern part of the Heath Steele belt that led to revision of the local stratigraphy, and necessitated a structural re-interpretation of the area with implications for exploration. Although K depletion (decreased K and K/Th) is typical of chloritized footwall zones of chloritization, these features were not fully apparent here due to the recessive nature of these altered zones. In situ radiometric analysis using a portable gamma-ray spectrometer is a rapid, inexpensive analytical technique for chemostratigraphic characterization of rock units within volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit settings, provided there is a contrast in the distribution of natural radioelements, particularly Th and K.

Sizing is fundamental technology for each step of ironmaking process. The progress of sizing technology has greatly contributed to the development of ironmaking technology. As the purposes of ironmaking operations diversified particularly since the oil crisis of 1973, the sizing technology made new advance- ment, as represented by pulverization of ser- pentine, dezincification and classification of secondary blast furnace dust, pulverized coal injection, size-segregated sinter charging and a coal preparation control process. These techniques are mostly characterized by the fine grinding of a given type of mineral or coal to heighten the degree of reaction con- trol. This trend is expected to continue Further.

"1. Introduction and Backgrounda. In its fundamental form, risk is simply the likelihood of an adverse impact. Expanding on this theme, the Corps of Engineers has broadly defined risk associated with infrastructure as a factor of three distinct elements: a probabilistic assessment of a hazard such as a flood or earthquake; a probabilistic assessment of how the infrastructure performs in the face of this hazard; and a measure of the likely consequences – loss of life, economic damage, environmental impacts – associated with the resulting inundation scenarios.b. The lessons and observations described herein relate to the Corps of Engineers experiences in implementing risk concepts for infrastructure management during the period 2005 through 2013. The Corps of Engineers is a large, decentrally operated and centrally led federal agency that plans, designs, constructs, operates, maintains, and/or manages a portfolio of over 3,000 built dam and levee systems within the United States. The infrastructure in this portfolio is 55 years old on average, and although much of the structures provide for flood risk management benefits, many of the dams deliver multi-purpose benefits. Scale matters – where scale and uncertainty are large, risk concepts provide great opportunity and arrangement for application.c. The amount of organizational change that is demanded for the implementation of risk concepts is considerable and should not be under estimated, but need not be feared if the path others have taken is considered. This paper is, in many ways, an opportunity to step back from the last seven years of implementing risk informed management, check our own azimuth and maturation, and share the purpose and energy behind our own continuing actions. Hopefully, this azimuth check is also beneficial to those that are either considering the use of risk or are in the process of implementing risk concepts.d. Success at managing the massive change related to incorporation of risk concepts will directly affect success of the infrastructure program. The three key organizational elements to consider –human systems such as governance and competencies; policies that outline the who, when, and why of decisions and management; and the processes and technology that outline how work is to be performed - are changed fundamentally. From senior leaders to project team members and all of the people in between, there is a need to discuss, confront, and vet the change and the role people and organizations have in the process. For the Corps of Engineers, with a history of over two centuries, deeply embedded beliefs about infrastructure aren’t transformed over night - the change process is decadal in scope. Given our self imposed “project execution” mantra and corporate objective, risk seemed threatening at first to the cost and schedule of delivering infrastructure projects. In reality, risk concepts have been responsible for savings and cost avoidance of nearly $6 billion over the last three years alone while at the same time justifying increased investment by several fold for the highest risk needs."

In the real world of coal mining, the bottom line for almost every support project decision is economic (i.e., what is it going to cost?). Up to this point, I have discussed the methods to improve the performance of typical support projects by better installation, materials, and techniques, thus lowering the impact of the bottom line cost. In this chapter, 1 shall explore what costs are relevant in mining construction, and how these costs are developed. The chapter centers around two major discussions: (I) developing cost accounting techniques, and (2) cost-estimating procedures for support construction. Each focuses on the fundamentals of practical cost considerations necessary for decisions on construction projects underground. Since cost accounting, economics, and investment planning are all subjects which warrant complete discussions on their own, this chapter will focus on distilling the important concepts required by a planning engineer into an easily understandable presentation.

(Read at the Amenia Meeting, October, 1877.) DURING the winter of 1868-9, I was called upon by Professor F. H. Storer, to put up the Bunsen filter pump in the chemical laboratory of the Masschusetts Institute of Technology. As the laboratory is on the lower floor, it was found necessary to use a great deal of cumbrous pipe and apparatus to get the necessary column. It was then suggested that if an instrument could be devised which would make use of the hydrant pressure in the service-pipe, it would do away with the objectionable features of the Bunsen pump. After using the Bunsen pump for some years, the jet pump to be described in this paper was devised, and it has since been adopted by Prof. Wing in the quantitative laboratory of the school. I am much indebted to Prof. Wing for his aid in starting the manufacture in brass of these jet pumps, which are now to be had in Boston. The jet pump much resembles the Giffard injector in form. It differs from it in the fact that water is the impelling fluid, and air the impelled, while with the injector steam is used to impel water. The principle of condensation of steam, which is Water availed of in the injector, is entirely wanting in the jet pump. The jet pump consists in a water jet, w, (see figure), a constriction or waist, a, and a waste tube, o. The success of the jet pump depends on the following conditions 1. The relation between the sizes of sectional area of a and w. 2. The proximity of a and w. 3. The form and angle of the two hollow cones whose vertices make the constriction a. 4. La caracterización geológica se realizó mediante mapeo superficial y tres sondajes manuales, las cuales permitieron identificar tres estratos; coluvial, argilita alterada y argilita inalterada; la superficie de falla del deslizamiento se ubica en estrato de argilita alterada. MANY mineral veins occupy faults, and movements on certain warped fault planes have resulted in openings. On normal faults the [ ] steeper parts have the widest openings, and on reverse faults the flatter parts have the widest openings. Theoretically the width of the opening is the sine of the angle of deflection times the amount of movement on the fault plane, but actually the widths of some of the openings are probably less because of readjustments of walls along joints or of other readjustments. The first treatment of the subject seems to have been in a book on mineral veins by John Leithart, published in Newcastle, England, in 1838. Later the subject was treated in various texts published in Germany, in England, and elsewhere. The subject was not given much prominence in the earlier American literature on economic geology, but has interested several workers in that field in the past decade. In this paper examples of districts showing ore shoots on warped faults, with relations noted, are described. Fault veins of the three depth classes of veins are noted. Many epithermal veins are in normal faults, and commonly the larger ore shoots are in their steeper portions. Many mesothermal veins are in reverse faults and many others are in normal faults. The flatter parts of veins in reverse faults are commonly wider than the steeper parts, although they are not always as rich as the steeper segments of the veins. There are not many hypothermal veins in faults of measured displacement.
