"The susceptibility to intergranular corrosion modes is a major technical issue preventing widespread utilization of higher strength welded AA7xxx extruded beam profiles, in the peak-aged T6 condition, in automotive bumper assemblies. A study was undertaken to evaluate the relative exfoliation corrosion resistance (ASTM G85-A2) as a function of joint design parameters, namely the base alloy composition, heat-treated condition and beam orientation after exposure to a cyclic acidified salt spray test. This paper documents the major findings extracted from this study.INTRODUCTIONBumper systems play a predominant role in the passive safety of an automobile, since they are one of the main structures for absorbing the collision energy in the event of an automobile crash. Heattreatable AA6xxx-series (Al-Mg-Si) and AA7xxx-series (Al-Zn-Mg) Al alloys, with relatively high strength, toughness, energy absorption, weldability and formability, make it possible to design costcompetitive bumper systems to crush in a controlled fashion. In this context, Cu-lean AA7xxx extrusions, such as AA7003 and AA7108, which exhibit higher strength than AA6xxx extrusion, such as AA6082, represent an attractive light weight material from which to fabricate bumper assemblies (Clausen et al., 2000; Pedersen et al., 2008; Chen et al., 2009).Arc welding is a key joining process for AA7xxx alloys within the transportation industry. A major technological issue preventing widespread utilization of arc-welded AA7xxx joints is the susceptibility to severe localized corrosion (Kent, 1970, Reboul et al., 1985; Holroyd et al., 1987). It generally occurs as exfoliation corrosion within a heat affected zone (HAZ) a few millimeters from the weld bead, or a type of stress corrosion cracking (weld-toe cracking), which initiates at the weld toe and propagates into the interfacial region between the weld bead and the HAZ (so called “white zone”). In addition to the micro-galvanic cell activity induced by the intermetallic compound constituent and strengthening particles present, there is strong evidence that macro-galvanic cell activity between the weld bead and base AA7xxx alloy may be playing a controlling role. Electrochemical profiles taken across fusion welded joints, in cross-section, during exposure to saline solutions suggest that a significant potential difference exists across the AA7xxx arc-welded joint (Shumaker et al., 1967; Grauer and Wiedmer, 1980; Tuck, 1985, Onoro and Ranninger, 1993). These studies consistently show that the HAZ and base alloy are more electronegative with respect to the weld bead (arc-welded with AA5xxx filler wire). Despite this initial important work, the majority of the recent corrosion research effort on welded AA7xxx alloys has focused on the performance of friction stir welds (Lumsden et al., 1999; Wadeson et al., 2006; Hatamleh et al., 2009)."

IN powder metallurgy it has often been observed that shrinkage may occur in one direction and growth in another during sintering. Even in long-time sintering experiments the rate of shrinkage may be different in different parts of the compact. In the fabrication of some parts requiring a constant permeability it is even questionable in some cases whether pressing from one direction should be attempted. These observations require for their interpretation a more detailed study of green or pressed density than has heretofore been available. Usually average density measurements of the whole compact are made and in some cases carefully cut sections are measured. A different approach to the problem was first mentioned by Rakowski1 and also used by Balshin.2 Balshin's diagram is reproduced in Fig r and schematically shows the result of pressing three layers of metal powder with fine intervening layers of graphite. The retarding effect of the die walls and a qualitative example of the density distribution is evident. More quantitative information about the distribution of density within a cold-pressed powder compact would be useful in showing the variation in density in compacts as influenced by the type of powder, shape of die, lubrication during the process, and other variables. Furthermore, information about the cracking of cold-pressed compacts may be obtained from an analysis of the stress distribution within a powder compact, and some information about the stress distribution can be obtained in turn from the density and strain distributions. A more detailed report on some of the present experiments appears in reference 3. PRESENT INVESTIGATION In order to ascertain the density gradients in cold-pressed metal powders, a deformable lead grid within the powder was employed. After pressing in cylindrical dies the ejected compact was radiographed, giving a pattern of the deformed grid. From the radiograph density and deformation from point to point is readily measured. From the radiograph strain distribution and stress trajectories were also determined. The latter also permits the determination of the coefficient of friction at the die wall. This technique indicates that the densest part of a compact pressed from one side is at the top outer circumference and the least dense region at the bottom circumference near the stationary plunger. For some heights of compacts the density at the axis is such that the lower density is at the top rather than at the bottom. So irregular a density distribution is due primarily to die-wall friction. As the ratio of diameter to height of compact is increased the die walls play a correspond¬ingly smaller role. More uniform density

A method for preparing titanium tetrachloride is described which consists of reducing rutile with coke and chlorinating the reduced product at 200° to 500°C. The crude distillate is purified by treatment with copper powder and distillation. Recoveries, exceeding 90 pct of the titanium in the rutile, were obtained. IN recent years considerable interest in metallic titanium has been aroused because of its outstanding physical and chemical properties. The present commercial processes for preparing titanium are modifications of the Kroll1 process and consist essentially of the reduction of titanium tetrachloride with magnesium in an inert atmosphere to produce metallic titanium with magnesium chloride as a byproduct. At present,' commercial titanium tetrachloride costs $0.32 a pound, which makes the price of the included titanium $1.28 a pound. As the titanium tetrachloride must be purified further before processing into metal, its ultimate cost obviously will be higher. Consequently, one of the prime requisites for the production of lower cost titanium metal is a source of low-cost titanium tetrachloride. Recently, Knickerbocker, Gorski, Kenworthy, and Starliper3 escribed a method for preparing titanium tetrachloride from low-grade Arkansas rutile by smelting the rutile with pyrite and coke to form a titanium matte and then chlorinating the titanium matte to prepare a crude titanium tetrachloride. This process had several inherent advantages. Low-grade rutile concentrates were utilized, the chlorination temperature was relatively low (approximately 200°C), and the reaction was strongly exothermic. However, this process had several disadvantages, chief of them being the rather low recoveries of titanium tetrachloride (65 to 81 pct) and the difficulty in purifying the crude titanium tetrachloride obtained. Because of the high-titanium and low-iron con- tents of rutile as compared to ilmenite, rutile should be of greater potential value as a source of titanium tetrachloride than ilmenite. Rutile, however, is not chlorinated directly in commercial practice, because reaction temperatures above 700 °C are required, at which point chlorine attacks most of the common materials of construction. The process now in use consists of converting the titanium in rutile to the cyanonitride by high-temperature reduction in an electric furnace, and then chlorinating this compound. The disadvantages of this process are the difficulty of producing the cyanonitride, the use of high-grade rutile concentrates in the charge, and the presence of several percent of silicon tetrachloride in the finished product. It would be of considerable interest to develop a new process for the preparation of titanium tetrachloride from rutile by chlorination at 200" to 500°C. Process Development Several investigators'-' have studied the reduction of titanium dioxide with carbon in an effort to prepare titanium monoxide. Invariably, the titanium monoxide formed in this manner was not pure, as it contained titanium carbide and one or more of the lower oxides of titanium. As these lower oxides of titanium are more reactive chemically than rutile, and as it is known that titanium carbide may be chlorinated readily, a study was made of the chlorination of carbon-reduced rutile. A sample of rutile concentrates from Hot Spring County, Ark., containing 76.19 pct TiO,, 5.65 pct Fe2O3, 4.18 pct SiO2, and 2.88 pct Al2O3, was used for this investigation. An experimental study has been made of the solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron and liquid Fe-C alloys using levitation melting and a rapid quenching device. Iron alloy droplets were equilibrated with nitrogen gas at 1 atm pressure, quenched, and analyzed. Previous techniques for studying the Fe-C-N system have produced data which me in marked disagreement. This disagreement is due largely to errors caused by reaction between the molten alloy and the crucible material. With the levitation procedure, errors from this source have been eliminated and precise solubility data obtained for temperatures between 1450° and 1750°C. C-N interactions in molten iron have been expressed in terms of first- and second-order free energy, enthalpy, and entropy parameters. ALTHOUGH the solubility of nitrogen in iron base alloys is in general small, the effects of nitrogen on the properties of steel may be quite profound. For most purposes nitrogen in finished steels is undesirable, particularly in the low-carbon grades, since on cooling to room temperature the solubility limit of nitrogen in the steel may be exceeded and this can lead to embrittlement and loss of ductility on aging. On the other hand, nitrogen can improve the work-hardening properties and machinability of steels while in certain stainless grades nitrogen is important in order to stabilize the austenite phase. It is, therefore, desirable that one should be able to predict the solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron alloys. To do this, information is required concerning the interactions between nitrogen and the various alloying elements which may be present in liquid iron. There have been several investigations of these effects in recent years1"7 and the interactions between nitrogen and many elements dissolved in liquid iron are now known to a high degree of precision at steel-making temperatures. Unfortunately, a number of iron alloy systems which are of interest in steelmaking have been difficult to deal with by the experimental techniques generally used for this type of investigation. Among the most important of these are the Fe-C alloys. In the past, two methods have been widely used for determining nitrogen solubilities: the Sieverts' technique, in which the amount of nitrogen required to saturate a given mass of liquid metal at a particular temperature and pressure is measured volumetrically, and the sampled-bath technique in which liquid metal held in a crucible is equilibrated with a gas phase containing a known partial pressure of nitrogen, and samples drawn from the melt are quenched and analyzed. These two methods have been discussed in detail elsewhere.5,8 With the Sieverts' technique, errors may be introduced from the following sources: i) Gas adsorption on metal films which have condensed on the cooler parts of the reaction chamber. ii) Uncertainty in the determination of "hot volume" calibrations. iii) Crucible-melt interaction, particularly if a gaseous reaction product is formed or if the melt becomes contaminated with material from the crucible walls. The sampled-bath method may also suffer from errors due to reaction between the melt and the crucible material. In addition, there is the possibility that gas may be lost from the sample during solidification and cooling. In the present investigation, the solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron alloys has been studied by means of a new technique based on the use of levitation melting equipment and a rapid quenching device. In addition to the fact that problems of the type outlined above are avoided, this particular approach has the following advantages: i) The high-frequency current induces vigorous stirring within the levitated droplet so that gas-metal equilibration is rapidly attained. ii) The gas phase surrounding the melt can be changed very quickly and is easily controlled. For example, a droplet may be levitated in helium, deoxidized in hydrogen, equilibrated with nitrogen, and quenched, within a period of 15 min. ii) Melts can be readily under cooled or superheated, thus extending the effective temperature range of an investigation and allowing temperature-dependent data to be determined with a high degree of precision. Excellent reviews of levitation melting techniques and their application to physical-chemistry studies at high temperature have been published recently by Jenkins et al.,9 Peifer,10 and Rostron.11 In the present investigation a levitation melting technique has been used to obtain data for the solubility of nitrogen in pure liquid iron and liquid Fe-C alloys at temperatures between 1450° and 1750°C. Capital and operating costs have been estimated for separating methane and hydrogen in gas - separating plants designed to produce 90 million scf per day of product gas containing a minimum of 90 percent methane . After a preliminary literature review of various separation techniques , three different processes --moving - bed adsorption using active carbon , oil absorption , and liquefaction -- were chosen for the cost estimates . Three different methane feed gas concentrations , 5 , 20 , and 50 percent ( cases 1 , 2 , and 3 , respectively ) , were chosen as representative methane concentrations for the separation estimates . Capital and operating costs were lowest for the moving - bed adsorption process in all three cases investigated . Operating costs declined from $ 0.24 to $ 0.06 per 1,000 cu ft of product gas , and capital costs declined from $47,490,800 to $7,411,200 as the percentage of methane in the feed gas increased from 5 to 50 percent .

The aim of this paper is to study the feasibility of copper and gold recovery from the old flotation tailing dam at Bor, Serbia. Laboratory leaching experiments were carried out using a composite sample taken by drilling from 16 - 40 m depth. Different oxidation agents as FeCl3, Fe2(SO4)3 and H2O2 were used. An H2SO4 solution with a pH less than 3 was used for leaching. The influence of a number of parameters on the recovery of both elements as temperature, pH, duration of leaching and concentration of oxidation agents was also studied.

Available thermodynamic data applicable to copper smelting systems are collected and tabulated, and the important gaps are pointed out. A few examples are given of estimations which can be made from the available data. An experimental research program is proposed to supply the thermodynamic data that appear most essential to better quantitative understanding of the chemistry of copper smelting. The proposed program is designed also to shed specific light on the practical problems of slag losses and magnetite behavior. OPPER smelting, from flotation concentrates to V-/ blister copper, is conspicuous among the large scale chemical processes which are conducted with only relatively incomplete knowledge of the physical chemistry involved. For example, no common metallurgy text explains adequately why copper enters the matte phase while iron enters only to the extent that sulphur is left over after satisfying the copper. Explaining this important phenomenon as a manifestation of the greater affinity of sulphur for copper than for iron is unsound because the affinities of copper and iron for sulphur are about the same at smelting temperatures. As will be shown, other affinities are really decisive in the relatively clear-cut separation of copper in the matte. In contrast, thermodynamic studies have contributed much to our understanding of copper refining, zinc oxide reduction, magnesium production, steelmaking, etc. For each of these processes, the important reactions are clearly recognized, and fair to good quantitative values of the free-energy changes and equilibrium constants are available. Such data have proved to be of constantly increasing practical value in process development and improvement. Work in other fields has furnished much thermodynamic data applicable to copper smelting systems. In fact, several promising starts have been made in applying such data to specific smelting problems. Kelleyl made an appraisal of the possibilities of recovering elementary sulphur from low grade matte. His calculations and compilations of thermodynamic data have represented the starting point for much of the work in this field, including the present survey. Huang and Hayward2 nd Aksoy3 used thermodynamic methods in the study of copper losses in reverberatory slags. Peretti4 used thermodynamic data in explaining the chemistry of converting. The recent publications of Darken and Gurry"." and of Darken,' dealing with the iron-oxygen and iron-silicon-oxygen systems, respectively, present equilibrium data that are applicable to copper smelting systems. Also additional data were reported recently on the affinity of sulphur for copper, manganese, and iron8 and on the sulphur pressures of iron-sulphur melts." The survey presented in this paper was made as the basis for planning an experimental program on the thermodynamics of copper smelting. Few researches on the chemistry of copper smelting have been reported in recent years, so that a reappraisal and coordination of old and new data are essential if further work is to take the directions of maximum value. The experimental program is now in progress, and the plan of attack is outlined at the end of this paper. Progressive Oxidation and Desulphurization of Copper-bearing Liquid Phases: The chemical activities of sulphur and oxygen are two of the most important thermodynamic yardsticks to be applied to copper smelting processes. Virtually the entire smelting and refining sequence involves a series of systems characterized by decreasing sulphur activity and increasing oxygen activity. In this section, therefore, an attempt is made to define and explain these activities in terms of equilibrium partial pressures of SO2, s2, and O,. Also, estimates of these quantities are presented, the estimates being based largely on calculations presented in a later section of this paper. The sequence of steps from raw flotation concentrate to fully oxidized copper ready for poling involves progressive and controlled oxidation. Iron is oxidized and enters the slag. Sulphur is oxidized and leaves in the gas. Table I summarizes several important features of this oxidation and desulphurization sequence, starting at the beginning of the matte blow in the converter. The top line gives in order the principal smelting and refining stages up to fully oxidized copper, plus the additional step, not used commercially, of oxidizing all the way to Cu,O. American Soda, LLP has commissioned the first solution mine for recovery of naturally formed sodium bicarbonate (nahcolite) from low-grade deposits using high-pressure, high-temperature injection fluid. This project, known as the Yankee Gulch Project, was commissioned33 years after discovery of the deposit and followed an intensive four-year feasibility study that included a full-scale pilot test. The nahcoliteis co-mingled with oil shale and is impermeable. Solution mining is achieved by a combination of thermo-mechanical cracking and dissolution. Elevated temperatures are required to initiate the thermally induced cracking and to enhance solubility of the nahcolite, which is highly temperature dependent. This paper will provide an overview of the development of the project from discovery, characterization, pilot testing, permitting and commissioning, with emphasis on the solution mining aspects.

"A research work has being carried out annmg at evaluating the possibility of treating simultaneously several electrochemical systems of spent batteries using the same process, in order to overcome the high costs and difficulties of selective collection and sorting. Zn-Mn02 systems, representing more than 75% of portable battery market, shall be treated in dedicated processes. The treatment assessment using a single hydrometallurgical process of the other major systems (NiCd, NiMH and Li-ion), having Ni and Co as main metals, was the aim of the research work here reported. Sulfuric acid leaching was demonstrated to be adequate for dissolving more than 90% of the metals of interest contained in batteries. The subsequent separation of metals by solvent extraction, using organophosphorous extractants like DEHPA and Cyanex 272, allowed the production of pure solutions of rare earths, cadmium/manganese, cobalt, nickel and lithium, enabling their further recovering.IntroductionRecycling is the best approach for end-of-life management of spent batteries mainly by environmental reasons but also motivated by resources conservation and, in some cases, by economic profits. Most relevant electrochemical systems of portable cells are Zn-Mn02 (ZMB, alkaline and saline), nickel-cadmium (NiCd), nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) and lithium-ion (LIB). These batteries are collected, sorted and usually treated separately, applying for pyrometallurgical or hydrometallurgical technologies, the former being the most common.Several processes have been developed and some of them industrially applied, as described in some available review papers [l, 2]. In Europe for ZMB systems the oldest processes are Batrec [3] and Citron [4]. Although having differences in details, both are based on pyrometallurgical recovery of zinc by distillation, in metallic or oxide forms, being manganese retained in the slag together with iron. Hydrometallurgical alternatives are also available, like Zincex [5] and Recupyl [ 6] processes, both using sulfuric acid solutions as leachant. The application of the existing technologies to battery recycling, instead of using dedicated processes, is other alternative already tested, being the Waeltz furnace or the Imperial Smelting some examples."

With more and more industrial construction projects implementing RFID and other sensor-based technologies on fabrication and project sites, new innovative processes are needed to help automatically read and re-position RFID tags while reducing the cost to deploy RFID infrastructure over large areas. RFID tags are being used on construction sites to help identify the location of materials, equipment and personnel to aid in finding project critical materials and equipment required to construct the industrial facility on time and on budget. This research provides a cost-effective process for reading tens of thousands of RFID tags over large project sites from outdoor laydown yards, to warehouses to the workface where the materials and tagged equipment are installed. Based on the collected RFID and sensor data, localization mechanisms determine the most recent coordinates of the tagged components. The paper will cover analysis of RFID collected data and key lessons learned from a commercial deployment of the SiteSense® system with one Alberta-based industrial contractor, JV Driver Fabricators, at an 80-Acre module, pipe spool and structural steel fabrication site.

During several experimental programs conducted at the Institute of Ferrous Metallurgy, Technical University, Aachen, whisker formation was observed when iron ores were reduced at low as well as at high temperatures. Thus, in an attempt to find the reason for the volume change taking place during reduction, iron whisker growth was observed. Whisker growth appears to be one of the important reasons for the swelling of pellets. One set of experimental observations determined that when iron forms as needles rather than as a crust on the surface of oxide, the pellets became very porous. In related experiments, the beneficiation of finely disseminated iron ores, in which the metallic iron is separated from the gangue in granular or nodular form, was achieved by a reduction-concentration method. In this process, which is conducted at sufficiently high temperatures, oxide whisker growth, resulting from the formation of volatile suboxides and a gas transport mechanism, plays a vital role in the joint deposition of SiO, and iron from the vapor stage.

Metal Mines Limited (Bancroft Division) was incorporated m 1964 to take over the assets of Faraday Uranium Mines Ltd., including their uranium deposit near Bancroft. Ontario. This paper outlines the geology of the Bancroft area, and. then go on to describe the principle rock types m the mine workings, especially the pegmatite, which is the host rock for the uranium mineralization. The structure and mineralogy of the orebodies are thoroughly covered, and, after a summary of the production and ore re-serve figures, the paper concludes with suggestions for further exploration work. Location and History M ETAL Mines Limited, Bancroft Division, is located in Faraday township, Hastings county, Ontario. The main production shaft and concentrator are about: Y2 mile north of Highway 28 and about 5 miles west of the village of Bancroft (Figure 1). The presence of radioactive minerals in the Ban-croft-Wilberforce area has been known since the early 1920's. Uraninite was found at the Richardson deposit near Wilberforce in 1922, and some attempts were made to produce radium from the deposits of the area between 1929 and 1931.

THE spontaneous polarization surveys dealt with in this paper were carried out near Guddadarangavvanahalli (lat. 14° I7' N.; long. 76° 24' E.) in Chitaldrug district, which forms part of the Chitaldrug schist belt. The occurrence of gold, copper, lead and antimony ores has been noticed for several years but efforts to exploit them have been unsuccessful, therefore some spontaneous polarization surveys were made in the hope of finding indications of workable ore bodies. The country examined has a rugged topography, with numerous hills on which there is little vegetation. The climate is generally dry, the average annual rainfall of the tract being about 25 in., of which 17 in. occurs during the southwest monsoon. The geological formations of the area pertain to an ancient schistose series known as the Dharwar system (Archean). Locally, the rock formations have been divided into three series1-the chloritic series (or the Chitaldrug formation), the clay series (or the G.R. formation) and the trap series (or the Jogimardi trap). The chloritic series includes a complex of altered ancient traps and volcanic agglomerates intermixed with some schists of sedimentary origin, all of which are highly metamorphosed. The lithological types of this series are mostly distinguishable as greenstone schists, calc-chloritic schists, slaty schists, ochery and calcareous micachlorite schists, with subordinate bands of secondary limestone. The clay series (G.R. formation) is made up of shaly and argillistic schists, lithomargic clays, sandstones and brecciated ferruginous quartzites. The Jogimardi trap is mostly of the nature of an epidiorite (hornblende diabase), which is distinctly intrusive in the form of large laccolithic and narrower dikelike masses. In addition to this trap, there are other minor intrusives such as the chalybitic trap, quartz porphyry and quartz reefs. The topographical and geological features of the area are noted on the map of Fig. I. The locations of some of the spontaneous polarization centers determined by the geophysical survey are indicated also. METHOD OF SURVEY AND APPARATUS EMPLOYED The spontaneous polarization surveys were carried out in the manner recommended by the Imperial Geophysical Experimental Survey.2 Preliminary reconnaissance was first carried out along a series of parallel traverse lines that were laid out over the area. Many factors enter into the manufacture of basic open-hearth steel of high quality. Perhaps the two most important are temperature and the iron oxide content of the metal. If we can control these two factors we can essentially control basic open-hearth practice. SOURCE AND EFFECT OF IRON OXIDE Earlier investigators, especially Herty and his associates, have shown that iron oxide is introduced into the open-hearth furnace in four ways:' 1. By oxidation of the scrap by furnace gases. 2. By decomposition of the limestone. 3. By oxidation of the iron oxide in the slag by furnace gases. 4. By direct addition of iron ore to the charge. We also know that the speed of operation of an open-hearth furnace depends, for a given charge and given combustion conditions, on the rate at which iron oxide will diffuse from the slag into the metal. The rate of diffusion depends upon a number of variables, such as iron oxide content of the slag, slag viscosity, etc., which also depend upon the amount of iron oxide in the metal, amount of carbon present, temperature, and so forth. For a given carbon and a given temperature, the iron oxide content of the metal is in proportion to the iron oxide content of the slag. This fact can be easily verified by analysis of slag samples taken as described by Herty.2 It is preferable to take these samples just before deoxidetion. In killing the steel samples with aluminum it is desirable to use aluminum rod of 99 per cent purity; ordinary commercial aluminum rod with a purity of approximately 92 per cent is not satisfactory. In drilling these samples it is also essential to take the largest amount of drillings possible. This gives more accurate results because it eliminates spotty segregation of A12O3.

Neste trabalho foi estudada a recuperação de hastes de sondagem por meio do processo de soldagem por fricção, assim como as propriedades mecânicas obtidas neste processo. As amostras foram retiradas em tubos de aço SAE4130 trefilados sem costura no diâmetro externo de 88,9mm, 5,5mm de espessura de parede e com 300mm de comprimento total. Foram realizados ensaios metalográficos e mecânicos nas amostras do tubo com o objetivo de verificar e comparar as características do tubo em estado de entrega com os resultados obtidos na junta soldada. A junta soldada por fricção apresentou uma microestrutura constituída de bainita inferior e martensita na região da solda. Na Zona Termomecanicamente Afetada – ZTMA observou-se a presença de Bainita, ferrita e perlita. Em consequência das microestruturas obtidas, o valor de dureza na solda por fricção foi maior em relação à ZTA e ao metal base, o que resultou em rompimento na região do metal base durante o ensaio de tração. O método de soldagem por ficção mostrou-se eficaz para a recuperação de hastes de sondagem.

Six months out of the year the cold is always there, and it seems to be waiting for someone to make a mistake. The simplest things can shut down a multi-million dollar plant besieged with -40°F temperatures and a 40 mph wind. It takes only one man-door improperly latched to feeze up all the pumps on the bottom floor. Someone can poke a one inch hole in an outside wall in July and six months later, the whole plant is flooded because the main water line just froze up and burst. Some important things must be remembered in plant design for cold and remote areas. For one thing, everything in these areas is more expensive due to long and difficult supply lines. Fuel is expensive and would be a major cost item even if it were not expensive, due to the extended periods of low temperatures. Building volumes should therefore be kept to an acceptable minimum. Service areas, on the other hand, must be adequate, because maintenance generally has to be conducted inside in a heated area. Supply vehicles, for instance, have to get completely inside the building to unload. If you try to unload a supply vehicle with the door open at -50°F, you won't be able to find the vehicle for fog and if you take more than 5 minutes half the water lines in the plant will freeze UP.

The kinetics of alloying- in W-5 rot pct Re powder compacts were investigated at temperature about the upper limit for the formation of the x phase, such that a single intermediate phase was involved in the process. The rates and directions of motion of the a-o and o-b interface were assessed as functions of tinze at the sintering teri7peraticve by quantitative izetallog-ralhic techtziques. The iiotion 01 these interjuces could be specified approxitnate1.y by u Parabolic )-ate law and deviations from this ,rate law were attribuled to a complex interaction between surface dif'fusion and volume diffusion during the initial stages of sintering. WHEN binary or more complex alloys are produced by sintering compacted blends of elemental powders, a complication is encountered which does not arise in the sintering of pure metals. In addition to concern for grain size and densification, the rate of inter diffusion of the component elements must be considered. The general problem of alloying during sintering has been treated by numerous investigators.'-7 These investigations have been concerned only with systems that form continuous series of solid solutions and a concentric-sphere diffusion model4 provides a useful description of homogenization in these stems.' Some controversy remains, however, over the contribution of surface and grain boundary diffusion to the homogenization process. Heckel% ePorts that homogenization can be described by volume diffusion at all temperatures, whereas other invetiators'' recognize the importance of surface and grain boundary diffusion, particularly at lower temperatures. Analysis of the homogenization process in partially miscible systems is complicated by the motion of the interfaces separating the individual phases. A simple analytical solution does not exist for such finite systems with spherical symmetry. It was the purpose of this work to examine the kinetics of the formation and dissolution of an intermediate phase in a binary system through an assessment of the motion of the interfaces separating this phase from the terminal solid solutions. PROCEDURE The W-Re system is an example of a partially miscible binary system and was selected for study because of its current importance in refractory-metal technology. The equilibrium phase diagram, Fig. 1, shows that the o phase will be formed by interdiffu-sion between tungsten and rhenium. At temperatures between approximately 2125" and 282O°C, the o phase will appear as the only intermediate phase in the diffusion system. In this work, a mixture of elemental powders containing 5 pct Re was employed. In such a mixture, the rhenium particles will be distributed randomly in a tungsten matrix. During sintering, a o-phase layer will form at the W-Re interface. The development and subsequent disappearance of the o phase are controlled by the relative rates and directions of motion of the 0-0 and a-p interfaces. The motion of these interfaces can be inferred from quantitative metallographic measurements of the average radii of the o shells surrounding rhenium particles. Elemental tungsten and rhenium powders of commercial purity were employed in these investigations. "The oxygen meter has been in use at MacLeod Cockshutt Gold Mines for over a year, At MacLeod about 200 tons per day of reground concentrate containing roughly 10% pyrrhotite and 20% pyrite is cyanided in four 181 x 18' Dorr agitators. A survey by the Department of Mines showed that oxygen content of some of the agitators was rather low. Experience with our oxygen meter indicates that the oxygen content must at times have been too low for good gold dis solution.We have found that in winter, when pulp temperatures drop to about 50° F, oxygen saturation in the agitators is not difficult to maintain. In summer, however, when pulp temperatures rise to 70or 75°F, the oxygen content will drop very readily. It was found that a high oxygen content can be maintained readily if the pulp is sufficiently dilute. Thus at 50° F, a pulp of specific gravity 1. 75 i.e., about 55% solids, will saturate; but at 70 or 75° F, the specific gravity must be decreased to 1 .45, equivalent to about 40% solids, in order to maintain saturation. Very thick pulps, such as thickener underflows, are noticeably difficult to saturate in the laboratory, and lose their oxygen rapidly.Clear solutions, on the other hand, absorb oxygen readily and hold it. The primary thickener overflow, before agitation, is 100% saturated; after storage of 3 to 4 hours it is still 100% saturated at re clarifier tank. Barren solution after spraying in a launder is 100% saturated.We have not yet attempted to determine what percentage saturation is necessary for good extraction, but it is known that there is a point at which extraction decreases rapidly. So far, the measures required to maintain over 80 or 90% saturation have coincided with measures required to hold the reducing power to the point believed necessary."

It still rains in the Choco! I well remember one evening a dozen years ago, while traveling toward the town of Negua in a small champa or dug-out canoe, the rain fell so heavily that I had to work my hardest to bail out the water with a large totuma or gourd in order to keep the canoe afloat, the native boatman meanwhile plying his paddle in the stern. If any one thinks bailing is easy work, let him scoop out a quart or more at a stroke, 40 times a minute for half an hour, and I venture that he will change his opinion. These small canoes required only one paddler to make the 3 miles an hour which is the standard rate of aquatic progress on the Choco. Another time, on the Atrato river, about six o'clock in the afternoon, the rain fell so heavily that an empty gourd, 9 in. in diameter and 4.5 deep, was filled to the brim in 90 sec., timed by a watch. Such downpours are typical, but unless caught in one it is not specially noticed. These downpours seldom last more than an hour, and frequently cover only a limited area, occasionally falling on one bank of a river and not on the other. During the night-time, the rain, if gentle, will usually last until dawn, and sometimes an intermittent drizzle will keep up all day as well, although, as a rule, it rarely rains during the day. The rise of the rivers, due to the rain-fall, varies from a few inches to several feet. One night in August, 1899, the spuds of the dredge Margaret, operating on the Atrato river, showed a rise of 16 ft., and for 3 days thereafter occurred the greatest flood known in that district for 32 years. This paper describes an integrated approach to the evaluation of ore loss and ore dilution via geostatistical simulation of in situ geology and grade characteristics, simulation of blasting mechanisms and simulation of loading from a blast muck pile. The approach is demonstrated on a case study. The sequential Gaussian method is used to simulate in situ bench grades on the scale of the smallest selectable volume within a blast muck pile. The simulated grades of these component volumes are interpreted as the reality that would be available with exhaustive sampling. The simulated bench is subjected to a blast simulator, based on the SCRAMBLE model, which effectively moves each of the component model volumes to its final resting place in the blast muck pile. Ore/waste delineation and selective loading processes are applied to the simulated muck pile to determine the degree of selectivity that can be achieved by various sizes of loader and types of loading and to quantify ore dilution and ore loss. An in situ model representing the reality of knowing only the data and information that are available from specific grade control drilling and sampling grids is obtained by sampling the geostatistically simulated model on a specified grid. The volumes comprising the in situ model are then populated by estimates based only on the data and from the specified grade control drilling and sampling grids. Different drilling and sampling grids are used to generate different models, each reflecting the levels of data and information available. Selectivity is assessed as a function of the drilling and sampling grids as well as the size and type of loader. Performance is assessed against the ideal selectivity that could be achieved on the perfect knowledge model comprising the simulated values of each component volume. Costs, prices and financial criteria enable an optimal selection of the grade control drilling grid, size of loader, type of loading and blast design.
