As a part of mine operation’s success key, Community Development nowadays seems to be a rule of thumb. Not only is for a short term need of the company during their operation but also for the national public opinion on the presence of the mining industry to a certain region. Nanggung region which is only a 2-hour drive from Jakarta, brings the challenges to Antam’s gold mine business in the areas such as illegal miner presence, easy access to the mine area as it is very close to the community, and national political sensitivity considering its proximity to Jakarta. The company allocates about 3%of its total operational cost annually for Community Development pro-gram. The program is derived through SWOT analysis and broad involvement of all community components to assure that the allocated fund is addressed to the right place. In the year of 2002, the company has successfully established a conducive-relation with the community.

With the papers of Palmer and Smith1 and of Burghoff and Bohlen,2 published in 1942, understanding of the problem of the development of ears on deep-drawn brass cups was brought to the point where, from a practical standpoint, producers of brass sheet could keep earing under control. However, these very practical results raised questions concerning the reasons for the observed behavior. Since plastic deformation is fundamentally a function of crystallographic slip, these reasons must be considered in the light of the textures to be found in the annealed sheet. Various attempts have been made. to interpret the mechanism of ear formation by correlation with the preferred orientation and the anisotropy of the sheet. However, none of these has satisfactorily explained why ears are usually found in the rolling and transverse directions for copper but at 45' to these directions for brass. This paper offers additional data on these two related subjects and has been divided into two sections The first section provides a survey of the recrystallization textures of brass as affected by annealing temperatures and prior reductions, and an account of the caring behavior which accompanies these textures. The second section reports new data on the anisotropy that accompanies a characteristic texture for brass and endeavors with partial success to establish the factors that account for the difference in earing behavior between copper and brass Earing BehavioR oF Brass Review of Textures The recrystallization texture of severely rolled brass was first reported by Bass and Glocker.3 The preferred orientation to which this texture, obtained from metal annealed at 500°C., was most akin was (II3)[I12] This texture has been confirmed by Bauer, von Göler and Sachs;4 Brick;' Brick, Martin and Angier;6 and Cook and Richards7 who, in general, used annealing temperatures under 500°C. Bass and Glocker3 also reported the recrystallization texture at 850°C. to be the same as at 500°C. They analyzed their textures by means of single photograms obtained with white radiation. The photo-grams for both temperatures are reproduced in their paper, and there is a strong similarity between the two. However, for the latter temperature, the number of spots registered on the film was remarkably large for the grain size to be expected, and the authors made no mention of using a technique that would integrate a large enough area of the specimen to produce so many spots. The Royal Bafokeng community in South AfricaÆs North West Province represents a unique case in Sub-Saharan Africa in terms of its positioning in the natural resource economy. It receives royalties directly from mining firms for the extraction of Platinum Group Metals, which include platinum, ferrochrome, rhodium and palladium. In 2007, royalty income of about R290 million (approximately US$32.2 million) was reported. Such direct revenues have enabled the community to invest in educational, medical and other social infrastructure, thus complementing governmentÆs social provisioning efforts. Indeed, the Bafokeng community owes its present-day modernisation efforts to mineral rights, and in particular, the legal-institutional arrangement that has enabled it to play an active role in South AfricaÆs lucrative extractive economy. However, the distribution of platinum wealth in this community is not only uneven, but also appears to have had little impact on the broader socio-economic conditions in the community. Despite claims by community leaders of heavy investment in education and skills development, the community continues to be faced with very high levels of unemployment, illiteracy, sprawling informal settlements, poor access to medical facilities and malnutrition. This paper examines the sociological paradoxes and contradictions thrown up by the approach adopted to involve community members in the mobilisation of mining royalties for developmental ends. The central argument is that the current æmodelÆ contradicts the communityÆs stated goals of using platinum wealth to drive up broad-based development and modernisation. This is mainly because it leaves out the vast majority of community members, who are uneducated and unskilled. The core analysis is based on pilot data from an ongoing study in the Royal Bafokeng community.

"Recently detailed fragmentation data from blasts fired with electronic delay detonators (EDDs) in the Red Dog mine in Alaska were presented. They include a comparison with pyrotechnic detonators fordifferent in-­-row delays in a standard pattern and EDDs in an expanded pattern. Fragmentation was measured on the belt after the primary crusher. The Rosin-­-Rammler function (RR, two parameters) was used to describe the crusher product. This was combined with the JK SimMet crusher model and the CZM blast model (Crushed Zone Model, three to five parameters) to estimate a reasonable crusher feed (muck pile fragmentation or run of mine, ROM) for each fitted product. In this way the effect of delay timing and electronic detonators on the median fragment size x50 and uniformity coefficient n for both crusher product and the blasted rock was determined. "

Under the impetus of new demands caused by the war, the oil and gas industries of Kansas established new records during the year 1942. In all, 1513 test wells were drilled, which is somewhat of a drop from the figure of 2113 for 1941. The 1513 tests yielded 800 new oil wells, 85 new gas wells, and 628 dry holes. Thus there was an increase in two categories, the gas wells and the dry holes. Considering that last year only 592 dry holes were completed out of a much larger total, the figure of 628 dry holes causes some concern among local operators. The increase in unsuccessful tests illustrates once more the fact that each year it is becoming harder to find the remaining oil pools. When the figures are broken down, it appears that western Kansas accounted for 1177 tests, of which 689 were oil wells, 33 gas wells, and 455 dry holes. The total potential daily initial production uncovered by the successful wells amounted to 753,178 bbl. of oil and 619,734,000 cu. it. of gas. The figures for new initial production indicate a substantial drop from last year's figure of 1,691,000 bbl., and the figures on gas are slightly higher. In 1941 the new gas as based on a daily potential was 508,000,-000 cu. ft. In eastern Kansas, 336 wells were drilled. Among these in were oil wells, accounting for a daily initial potential production of 16,199 bbl. The new gas wells numbered 52 and added 253,725,000 cu. ft. per day to the gas potential production of the state. The remaining tests, 173 in number, were dry. It is interesting and perhaps significant that about half (630) of the wells drilled in western Kansas were drilled by the independent operators. Among the large companies, the Cities Service Oil Co. drilled 163 wells; the Stanolind Oil and Gas Co., 52; the Skelly Oil Co., 39; the Continental Oil Co., 48; and the Shell Petroleum Co., 21 wells. In eastern Kansas the independent operators drilled 297 out of the total of 336 wells. Among the major oil companies the Cities Service Oil Co. drilled 19; the Phillips Petroleum Co. 7; and the Sinclair-Prairie Oil Co., 6 wells. The figures based on relative percentages of dry holes to successful oil or gas wells are revealing. In western Kansas almost one half of all wells drilled by the independent operators were dry holes. The major oil companies drilled approximately 547 wells in western Kansas, of which 379 were successful in finding either oil or gas. It thus appears that the major companies fared better than the independents. In eastern Kansas the major companies drilled 39 wells, of which 29 were successful in finding commercial quantities of oil or of gas. No less than 329 wildcat test holes were put down in western Kansas and 105 in eastern Kansas, or 434 in all, during 1942. Considerably more than half of these were drilled by independent operators; 223 in western and 99 in eastern Kansas. An exploratory hole 56 mile or more from production is regarded as a wildcat well in Kansas. On a percentage basis, about 80 per cent of wildcat wells were failures. THE abundance and value of the tellurium minerals of Colorado is well known, but, as yet, few analyses have been made of them, and I offer these as a small contribution to the chemistry of these valuable ores. 1. Native Tellurium.-The specimens from which the analyses of this mineral were made are from the "John Jay" Mine, Boulder County, Colorado, where it occurs in quite large masses, though mixed with more or less silica and iron pyrites. It is usually a fine¬grained, tin-white mineral, but sometimes occurs in distorted, hexag¬onal prisms in cavities in the quartz. Before the blowpipe it gives the reactions for tellurium, sulphur and iron; by cupellation, it yields a small amount of gold. Pilot plant studies showed the technical feasibility of fluidized-bed operation for producing hydrogen and synthesis gas by the steam-iron process. A mixture of iron and iron oxide from 20-to 100-mesh was partially reduced with a simulated producer gas and then oxidized with steam and/or carbon dioxide. Results of tests show the effects of pressure, temperature, bed height, gas-to-solids ratio, type of iron oxide, and composition of gas on the gas and solids conversions during reduction and oxidation. A baffled free-fall solids system was also found operable. The short residence time of about 5 seconds limited conversion of the solids.

The manufacture of steel rails in the United States upon a large scale may be roughly dated from the years 1875-76, and the same years witnessed an active movement among the railroads toward the adoption of heavier and improved patterns. In this movement each road was a law unto itself, and the "personal equations " of some scores of engineers were so freely injected into the calculations that patterns were multiplied in the most absurd and mischievous manner, until at length the burden upon the mills became wellnigh unendurable, and called forth a vigorous protest in Mr. Holley's paper,* read before the Institute in February, 1881. There were then regularly manufactured in the various mills of the United States, no less than 119 different patterns of steel rails, subject to current order, of which 64 per cent. were embraced under five weights per yard. Commenting upon these and other figures there given, Mr. Holley stated as the primary object of his paper, " to show that,, while this multiplication of rail-patterns is an annoyance and an expense to rail-makers, it is a source of immense loss to railway companies." Since 1876 the increase in gross annual tonnage upon our leading lines has been very great, and has been accompanied by an increase of wheel-loads and running-speeds. As the average weight of the rails of 1876 was by no means excessive, the growing deman Is of traffic have slowly driven the roads toward stiffer sections, inaugurating a movement that now promises to become epidemic. In 1876 a 67-pound rail was a first-class equipment; to-day everything under 75 pounds is light, and many 80's are coming into use. European practice has long been heavier than ours; in part because the higher cost of sleepers has led to an average of 3-feet spacing, instead of two-feet as with us. The old 84-pound double-header, and Sandberg's 80- and 89-pound rails, respectively 51/4 inches and 591/2 inches high, are reported common on English roads; and he is strongly advocating the general adoption of the 100-pounder shown in Fig. 7, with what success I have not learned, except that the Belgian government has ordered a lot. A new minitest of in situ uranium leaching processes at reservoir conditions is proposed. The test which consists of a single observation/ production well and two observation wells is designed to permit the evaluation of both restoration and leaching parameters. It is shown that by using a straight forward history matching procedure, sometimes called a type curve analysis, both the rate of leaching and the ultimate uranium recovery can be evaluated based on the results of the test. Type curves are presented for the case in which the reaction rate is kinetically controlled and there are no other minerals competing for oxidant. Other situations can be approached using the same techniques as those presented here.

Back analysis is a very important procedure for proper understanding of physical processes. Back analysis can be used to establish the role of different factors, define parameters to be calculated and formulate the behavior of natural or physical processes based on field experimental results. It is evident that, in order to obtain the necessary data for back analysis, field observations are required. For the Michailovsky region (Kursk Magnetic Anomaly, KMA) the long-term strength characteristics of the clay covering the quarry slopes were established with the help of back landslide calculations. The obtained data allowed quantification of the shearing resistance parameters at the presence or absence of intermittent dips of discharge in the pit bank massif structures. Based on the results of investigation for material composition, strength and deformation of finely dispersed (clay-chalk) deposits in the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly including measuring of the settlements of filled structures, complex probing and laboratory determination of water-physical and mechanical properties of "man-made" soils, engineering-geological zoning of filled structures was carried out.

Between 1988 and 1990, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the mineral resources of San Juan National Forest to appraise and determine types and locations of deposits that could be mined economically now and in the foreseeable future. The study included a comprehensive field examination and literature search. Substantial amounts of lead, zinc, copper, gold, and silver have been mined from within the Forest in the La Plata, Rico, Silverton, and Dunton areas. At least one buried 200 million ton stockwork molybdenum deposit occurs in the Rico area. Similar size porphyry copper deposits occur at the surface and about 1,700 feet below the surface in the Bedrock Creek area of the La Plata district. Numerous smaller base-and precious-metal and uranium deposits have been prospected and mined throughout the Forest. Coal, oil, and gas have been or are currently being produced in the western and southern parts of the Forest. Carbon dioxide occurs in the western part of the Forest. Strategic elements occurring within the Forest include platinum, palladium, cadmium, gallium, indium, bismuth, and tellurium; however none of these elements is economically recoverable at present. Several geothermal areas are scattered across the eastern two-thirds of the Forest. Industrial minerals within the Forest include sand and gravel, limestone, and decorative stone.

The goal of most in-plant studies is to identify factors that limit overall plant performance. A major finding from such studies is that interactions between unit operations are always important, usually specific for a particular ore and plant combination, and are one of the limits to plant performance. Computer simulation based on process models developed from in-plant studies is a useful tool for identifying limits to performance and for estimating the effects of proposed changes at both pilot and industrial plant scales. Examples involving interactions between comminution and various separation and agglomeration processes are presented, and directions for future development discussed.

A comparative study has been made of the ex-tractability of several of the transitim metals from thiocyanate sohtions using methyl isobutyl ketone as the organic solvent. Extractions were made of scandium (III), chromium (III), manganese (II), iron (III), and cobalt (II), of which only the scandium , iron, and cobalt were readily extracted. All extractions were made at pH 2 and at 25.5 °C. A series of extraction experiments was made on scandium, iron, and cobalt to determine the effect of thiocyanate cmcentration added as the ammonium and also as the calcium salt. Also determined was the effect of metal ion concentratim and ionic strength on the distribution ratio. Analyses of the organic extracts indicated the scandium and iron were extracted principally in the uncharged trithiocyanate form, while the extractable form of the cobalt contained the cobaltotetrathiocyanate anion. THE chemical separation of metal complexes in solution by solvent extraction has in recent years been developed for large scale separation as well as bench scale work in the laboratory. It has also found increased application in analytical chemistry. Its extension to extractive metallurgy as a unit operation is best illustrated in the recovery of uranium and vanadium from their leached liquor.5-8 The extractability of some thiocyanate systems have been extensively investigated. The rate earths have been separated from one another using butanol as a olvent. Scandium was effectively extracted in ethyl ether using ammonium thiocyanate as the com-plexing agent.'' Similarly, the separation of hafnium from zirconium has been reported using ether""' or hexone13 as the organic solvent. The extractability of various metal thiocyanates in ethyl ether is given by 0ck.l Sharp and Wilkinson15 prepared nickel-free cobalt slats by thiocyanate extraction. The mechanism of extraction of titanium (IV) thiocyanate with methyl isobutyl ketone was determined by elafosse.''" The characterization of cobalt (TI) thiocyanate complex using methyl isobutyl ketone as the solvent at near neutral aqueous solution and the spectrometric studies of the ex-tractable cobalt complex has been made by Hard." It is noteworthy to mention at this point that the fundamental characteristic of ketone (oxonium) solvent extraction is that the extractable species are uncharged ion pairs solvated by the ketone molecules, but probably still partially hydrated.

GeRmany's crude-oil production during 1936 totaled 3,112,494 bbl., an increase of 5.2 per cent over the 3,007,711 bbl. produced in 1935. The official monthly production figures published in 1936 report only the individual production figures of the three old established fields, whereas since 1936 official reports combine the production of all other fields into one figure. A RECENT demand for some form of panoramic display of an important railway line, showing its branches, connections, and terri tory controlled by it, revealed to the writer the advantages of' a topographical model or relief map fix this purpose. Hitherto, maps of this nature have been used chiefly for scientific and geographical purposes, and confined to a comparatively narrow field of service. They deserve to become more popular and to have their advantages better understood. Much has been written and accomplished in this direction by Prof. Lesley, Messrs. Harden, Moulten, de Mendonca Cortez, and others; but I believe their pub lished descriptions of the methods employed in the construction of these models are confined to those used by themselves. It is the writer's aim to present in condensed form these various methods, and some suggestions of practical value as to the most economical course of procedure, as well as to mention some of the uses that may be made of the results obtained Methods of Construction.—Many different materials have been prepared and used in the preparation of relief maps, such as metal, clay, plaster, gypsum, wax, putty, Card-board, papier-mache, wood, and compositions of varions kinds, with results more or less success ful : wood, however, in the writer's experience, has been found to be by far the most satisfactory, combining the advantages of stability, accuracy and ease of handling. The following is a brief description of several of the methods used in constructing topographical models : When clay, wax, putty, compositions or materials of a plastic nature are used, the operator carries his work up from its base by means of measurements or by the eye, manipulating and shaping the material as best he can, ac cording to such features of his subject as he wishes to delineate. This process requires remarkable skill, and given this, will probably fall short even then of an approximation to accuracy; lacking essential elements of detail nil over the work and exactness, particularly in position and elevation of the most important points in the territory mapped. Lead-zinc ore bodies in the upper part of the Pine Point carbonate barrier complex are localized in paled-solution structures that developed as the result of post-middle Givetian subaerial exposure. Detritus-filled dolines host prismatic ore bodies, and macropores and stratabound permeable zones contain tabular ore bodies. Sulfides are concentrated in these transgressive paleosolution structures that acted as natural bypasses between aquifers and loci for mixing of fluids of different character. Complex ore textures indicate rapid early sulfide precipitation followed by slower sulfide growth. Evidence for both sulfide-carbonate equilibrium and disequilibrium conditions suggest fluctuations in ore fluid composition, perhaps related to periodic supply of reduced sulfur. District and ore body metal distribution pattern may reflect the nature and movement of mineralizing fluids.

S. J. Venning (Member): The authors should be congratulated on producing such concise data from the plethora of experimental report results. Their observations on the cost of liners calls for some comment however, as the really unique feature about liners in South Africa is that they can be obtained so cheaply. Attention has been focussed on the 1961 cost of white iron at R50 per ton for chill cast block liners while manganese steel liners are reported as costing as much as R250 per ton. The former are however, a relatively heavy, simple casting with a low labour content and reasonably high percentage productivity, made from metal melted in a cupola. The capital investment to produce this type of casting is low compared with that required to produce manganese or other alloy steels. The chill cast liner block is always a production item and is cast in a permanent mould. Almost all manganese mill liners, except perhaps small aperture screens, are sold for considerably less than the R250 per ton quoted by the authors. Where a price of this nature is asked it would be because the design of the casting demanded is complicated or leaves little metal to carry the labour and other costs of production. As reference has also been made in the paper to liner costs in America, prices for similar types of liners obtained during a visit to Canada and the U.S.A. in 1961, could be of interest: Material Price per Location short ton Ni-hard R250 Elliot Lake Body liners block type Ni-Hard R300-310 FAS New York Mn Steel R280-290 FAS New York Screens (grids) slotted Cr.Mo. White iron in Canada was then quoted at about R150 per ton, but as Ni-Hard gave a life of at least two to twoand-a-half times that of white iron, it was a much more attractive proposition particularly when relining and down time costs were taken into consideration. There is little doubt that most foundries would welcome clear and complete specifications of the customers requirements and systematic checks to ensure that these specifications are being met. B.S.S. or other accepted standards should form the basis of these, and periodic inspections should be undertaken to ensure that only those foundries capable of complying should be included as suppliers. The authors have referred to new designs, but can the industry really call the grid and plate new when the patents were taken out during the second world war and the sawtooth block has been used for at least 35 years. Unfortunately, far too little thought and consideration are normally given to the ultimate mill liner design while the mills themselves are on the drawing boards. THIS paper is the outcome of an extended investigation carried out in association with Dr. L. Slater. The inquiry had been continued in various directions and a number of results are quoted from an investigation recently completed by S. H. Jenkins. In projecting the work some five years ago, the author had in view a general attack on the problem of the spontaneous combustion of coal from an angle that had received little attention. The basic idea was to obtain a "slow motion study" of the active combustion of coal. This included an examination of the conditions prevailing in a mass of coal at the moment when active combustion ceases. It was thought that, if the factors governing the extinction of combustion in coal could be definitely established, it might offer an explanation of the manner in which the spontaneous combustion of coal originates. The inquiry arose from a detailed study of the properties of fusain that the author began in 1918. Fusain seemed to possess characteristics quite distinct from the coal with which it was associated, for if it were collected into a heap and one portion were heated by a small flame the combustion would traverse the whole mass. This combustion was not accompanied by smoke and passed slowly through the heap of material. Later, it was found that coals, including anthracites, would behave in a similar manner provided they were in the form of powder and that the particles were smaller than a certain size. The limiting size of particles is a definite characteristic of the coals investigated. In view of the fact that fusain exists with coal in a state that enables it to undergo this particular form of combustion, it must be assumed, sometimes, to playa definite part in the spontaneous combustion of coal in the goaf (waste).

Compositional geostatistics is an approach developed to ensure that the constant sum constraint induced by geochemical iron ore analysis is respected in estimation and simulation. Jack-knifing and cross-validation were used within this framework to compare the results from ordinary cokriging of the additive log ratio (alr) variables with those from conventional ordinary cokriging. Two methods were used to back-transform the alr estimates: the crude additive generalised logistic back transformation and numerical integration via Gauss-Hermite quadrature. Previous work on a blasthole data set from a Yilgarn iron ore mine showed promising results, with the Gauss-Hermite quadrature method returning results comparable to ordinary cokriging from the point of view of bias, but superior in that the constant sum constraint imposed by geochemistry of the data was honoured. Other practitioners have noted that the linear interpolation of non-linear log ratio transformations will result in biased results, and that this bias can be masked in a (grade control) setting where the spatial density is high. To test this assertion, the methodology has been extended to successively lower spatial density data sets.
