In 1926 Gendersl reviewed the existing theories of this subject and stated his views in support of the gas-pressure theory. Again, in 1937, the subject was thoroughly reviewed by N. B. Vaughan3 and by Phillips and Brick,2 so that no résumé is called for here. The purpose of this paper is to describe certain observations made in the course of mill work, and to point out that they mostly tend to confirm the gas theory of Genders. Vapor Segregation There is, however, one type of inverse segregation that can be accounted for by considering the volatility of one of the constituents of an alloy. The most familiar case is ordinary brass, which is subject to a zinc enrichment of a few tenths of a per cent at the surface of a chill casting. This has been noted in 70-30 brass by Genders, and a typical example of it is given in Table 1, which represents a cylindrical billet 7 in. in diameter by 55 in. long. After lathe-turning 1/32 in. from the surface, the remaining distance to the center was sampled at six equally spaced intervals. the lead, which is essentially the same throughout, will be mentioned later. Consider a brass-mill mold, either round or rectangular in cross section, standing several feet high. It may require a minute or two for pouring. Before it is full, the metal in the lower end has partly solidified and contracted somewhat away from the mold. The initial shell of solidification follows not far behind the top of the column, even if the central portion is liquid for a long way down. There is, then, a space between metal and mold that is filled with zinc vapor. The vapor has no exit, because the liquid at the top of the rising column is not only in contact with the mold but keeps UP a fresh supply of zinc vapor, which has, perhaps, already begun to condense in the lower portion. The cycle is short. Within a minute or two after the mold is full the bar has cooled enough to condense all the zinc. Some of it may condense on the mold; it might be expected that most of it would condense there, but the mold at that time is well coated with a velvety carbon residue from the oil dressing, overlain by fluffy zinc oxide that commenced covering the inside of the mold as soon as pouring began. The clean skin of the freshly cast brass offers a preferred surface for condensation. Reabsorption is quick and inevitable. In order to conduct intelligently the sampling of copper of various forms and grades, solid or in molten furnace-charges, a knowledge of this subject is essential. Yet figures and tests have been persistently withheld from publication, and the books at our command give us little or no information in this regard. This gap in our copper-literature has led to a series of experiments, the results of which are given below. Nearly all gold- and silver-bearing copper, destined for shipment, is cast into the form of bars or pigs. For the sampler, the question arises, Does copper, so cast, remain homogeneous ? If it does, sampling should present no difficulties; but, from experience, we know that this is not the case, and we are thus led to study the behavior of the precious metals arid impurities in copper when the latter changes from the molten to the solid state. For the purpose of the experiments here described, all available grades of copper were selected, and all of them mere subjected to the same conditions, an important requisite for proper comparison. The molten copper obtained directly from reverberatory- and blast-furnaces was cast in a cast-iron mould, the sides and bottom of which were 1 inch thick, and would, therefore, give the copper a fair length of time to chill. The inside dimensions of the mould, and, consequently, of the block of copper obtained, were: length, 10 inches; width, 9 inches; and depth, 5 inches. THE study of copper alloys of the age-hardening type has received considerable attention, and, among the alloys which the authors have considered, those containing small amounts of nickel and phosphorus as essential constituents seem especially interesting. Such alloys have attractively great capacity for being hardened and also have relatively high electrical and thermal conductivity in the hardened state. In addition, it has been found that the increase in hardness and strength imparted by aging can be greatly augmented by cold-working, so that axcellent combinations of conductivity and strength are obtainable. In view of the possible importance of the alloys, it was considered desirable to investigate the solubility relationships in the copper-rich portion of the copper-nickel-phosphorus system. This paper presents some of the results obtained in this investigation to date and also gives properties of typical alloys that appear to be of commercial interest.

"The design of rock foundations may need to evaluate shear strength of rock-concrete interface by performing laboratory direct shear tests. A series of tests were carried out on specimens for different values of the spacing free of encapsulating material about the shear plane and different values of normal stress. Different kinds of failure were observed and not necessarily at the rock-concrete interface. The spacing free of encapsulating material appeared to be of significant influence on the test results. A mechanical analysis is presented which illustrate the influence of the loading conditions in the direct shear box on the failure mechanism. INTRODUCTIONThe design of rock foundations subjected to significant lateral loads requires defining the value of the shear strength of the interface between rock and cast in place concrete. Verifying the stability against sliding of strip footings subjected to inclined loads (SETRA, 2009) or concrete gravity dams (CFBR, 2013) are common examples where design modelling approaches imply the shear strength, sometimes the deformation behavior, of the rock-concrete interface, more or less assumed as a failure plane.Defining the behavior of rock-concrete interfaces relates to tribology. Many studies have been conducted to improve the representation of this behavior (e.g., Johnston & Lam, 1989; Kodikara & Johnston, 1994; Gu, Seidel & Haberfield, 2003; Saiang, Malmgren & Nordlund , 2005; Fishman, 2008; Eltervaag, 2013; Gutierrez, 2013), raising many questions. The behavior appeared to be influenced by many factors such as the geometry of the interface which is not planar, the roughness of the natural rock, the rock mineralogy and the concrete formulation. In addition, the study of the shear strength of rock-concrete interfaces involves considering the two different deformation behaviors of both rock and concrete. Finally, the observed failure mechanism is strongly influenced by the initial cohesion due to adhesion between the two materials when concrete is directly cast onto rock."

"A dedicated iron removal stage was installed at Anglo American Platinum’s Rustenburg Base Metals Refiners (RBMR) during an expansion project which began execution in 2010. The Pressure Iron Removal (PIR) process aims to precipitate iron from a nickel leach solution under medium temperature (145 °C) oxidative conditions using caustic for neutralisation. Since commissioning, the process has been robust in removing iron from the refinery but has shown significant variability in the residues produced. These residues, which are typically comprised of ferrihydrite, hematite or natrojarosite, have varying iron contents and different physical properties which have implications for their filtration and ultimate removal from the refinery. Since over 95% of nickel plated at RBMR passes through the PIR section, volumetric constraints caused by poor filtration performance directly influence nickel production and stabilisation of this process remains central to the continued ramp-up of the refinery to full nameplate capacity. This paper details the development of the PIR process and the journey from concept to implementation. Recent laboratory and plant scale tests have highlighted the importance of the initial phase formed in the autoclave for the ultimate residue requiring filtration and how the feed acid concentration is a critical control parameter. On this basis, a new caustic dosing philosophy was implemented which improved pH control in the autoclave. Further optimisation of the PIR process is on-going.INTRODUCTIONIn 2010, an expansion of Rustenburg Base Metal Refiners (RBMR) to increase nickel production from 21 to 33 ktpa began execution. The management of iron was pivotal in the ultimate configuration in the new circuit and one of the primary differences from the original circuit was the addition of a dedicated iron removal stage: Pressure Iron Removal (PIR). A significant drive for this new unit operation was to facilitate the separation of iron from other leach residues. Not only did this result in a significant decrease in the amount of leach residue but, without the constraints associated with iron precipitation during leaching, has permitted more aggressive leaching conditions and, correspondingly, greater throughput and efficiencies.However, as with many commercial implementations of even mature technologies, the journey from development to implementation has presented challenges for the continued ramp-up of the refinery to full nameplate capacity. Specifically, since all nickel bearing leach solution must pass through the PIR section prior to the nickel purification and recovery circuit, throughput difficulties in the PIR section can directly impact supply of feed to the nickel tank house. Since commissioning, the PIR autoclave has effectively removed iron from the refinery, but has shown significant variation in the solids phases produced in the autoclave. This variation presents difficulties for the filtration of the discharge slurry and represents a key throughput limitation which periodically impacts production. Additionally, the increasing production rates associated with the ramp-up of the refinery have resulted in a significant increase in the required volumetric throughput through the PIR process. This has placed even greater emphasis on improving the stability of the solid phase produced in the autoclave, ultimately targeting an easily filterable residue with high iron content."

The nature of competition in the coal market tends to deplete the most favorable coal reserves first, and forces subsequent development of mines in more extreme ground conditions such as those associated with multiple-seam mining. In fact, 70% of the United States coal reserves are in multiple-seam situations. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to develop mine design algorithms that will result in safer multiple seam mines. This paper presents an overview of multiple seam issues in the central Appalachian coalfields. To date, more than 50 case histories have been analyzed from 20 operating mines in Eastern KY, Western VA, and Southern WV. Each case history is classified according to the degree of multiple-seam interaction, ranging from no apparent interaction to severe interaction with direct impacts on mine safety and resource recovery. The case histories are also examined with regard to amount and geologic characteristics of interburden and overburden, and design stability factors. The sequence of mining has also been found to be critical when the lower seam is fully-extracted. This paper compares current case histories to traditional rules of thumb. In addition two situations were modeled using LaModel software. LaModel has been upgraded to import pillar grids and topographic data from AutoCAD files. The cases presented demonstrate vertical stress capabilities of LaModel.

Belt conveyors generally are conceded to be the most economical method yet devised for the transportation of large quantities of bulk materials within plants. Belts are coming into greater use for transportation over long distances and are replacing other forms of long-haul conveyance. It is not the intent of the writer to comment on the design of belt conveyors, but to offer some suggestions for improvement in the operation of conveying belts, based on many years experience with belts in several stone-crushing plants. It is the contention of this writer that opportunities for improvement not fully realized by most operators exist in many plants and that a study of the individual conveyors can result in lower unit belt costs. General Reliability It is the fool-proof nature and general reliability of the belt conveyor that is responsible for its neglect. Even when abused, a belt will carry large tonnages and last a long time, often outlasting the personnel responsible for its care. Some operators look upon the purchase of a new belt as an expensive outlay every so many years, rather than a constant and steady cost amounting in belt wear alone to several dollars every operating day. This belt wear for all conveyors in one stone-crushing plant known by the writer costs 1 /12 cents per ton or $12 to $15 per hour, based on the present cost of belt replacements. The fact that these replacement costs are double those of prewar quality emphasizes the necessity of improving the conditions that make belts wear out. Some of those conditions are the responsibility of the conveyor designer, and if a serious original error has been made, this handicap cannot be overcome by the operator. If the belt is too narrow, too steep, or too fast for good loading, the operator finds that he has an inherently expensive belt. The other factors that decrease the life of a belt are more or less under his control. The two factors of most importance are the loading conditions and the alignment. Most of the cover wear and carcass cutting occurs at the loading point and if the alignment is not good under all conditions, edge wear or damage may result, Fig I. Loading the Belt It is difficult to load a belt in an ideal manner; that is, to flow the material on the moving belt at a steady rate, without impact, without turbulence, and with a velocity equal to and in the same direction as the belt. An inclined belt is especially difficult to load and particularly when its speed is over 300 or 350 fpm. Inclined conveyors require longer skirt plates to prevent spillage until the load settles. It does not seem reasonable to expect an inclined the to carry the same load as a horizontal belt of the same width and speed, because of the difficulty in loading

3.1-1. Purpose. Development drilling is directed towards determining the grade, volume, and three-dimensional outline of a mineralized zone previously located by exploration. It is distinguished from exploration or reconnaissance drilling, which has as an objective the discovery of new mineralized areas. A development drilling and bulk sampling program should furnish the following information: 1. Geology of the mineralized zone. 2. Quantitative data on grade and tons of material within pertinent cutoff limits. 3. Physical size and shape of the deposit. Areas underlain by waste as well as ore. 4. Mineralogica1 and metallurgical characteristics of the ore. 5. I1hysical characteristics of the ore. 6. Hulk samples for metallurgical testing and grade check. 7. Data on other factors that could affect mining operations, such as ground water, ground conditions, etc. 3.1-2. Procedures. There are numerous methods and techniques that are used to acquire pertinent data on a potential ore deposit. The total cost and accuracy of a development program depends on significant evaluation of the geology, proper selection of a drilling method, thorough analysis of sample data, and accurate evaluation of all the information. Knowledge of the geology of the mineral deposit is important in planning the development testing program and in evaluating the data obtained from such a program. Exploration work usually provides some significant information on the general size, shape, thickness, grade, and geology of the deposit. In some cases no further data are needed; in many cases geological complexities suggested by the preliminary work require further geological study. Of considerable importance may be the following:

"The geometry of the terrain topography before and after the failure are the essential factors for analyzing a landslide and for the design of remedial works. This paper presents a method to determine these factors, considering that the determination of the slide surface profile is difficult and costly using traditional methods and the pre-slide topography data is often not available. The presented method to locate the 3-dimensional geometry of the slide surface is based upon determining the slide surface in 2- dimensional vertical sections. This method utilizes post-slide topography of the area to determine the pre-slide topography and uses equations to estimate the pre-slide situation using a statistical process applied to points located on the sliding mass. This method is tested on the Maskun landslide in Iran. The results indicate the applicability of the proposed method to obtain the key factors for the back analysis of a landslide in a cost effective manner.INTRODUCTIONProbably the most reliable method of determining the strength of soil and rock mass is to back analyze a failed or failing slope (Caia et al. 2007; Wyllie & Mah, 2004). This method is used in geotechnics for estimating geotechnical parameters of the rock and soil mass (Sakurai et al., 2003; Frayssines and Hantz, 2009; Cepuritis et al. 2010), but it requires that the failure mode is well established and that there is complete and precise information available on the slide surface and the sliding mass (Sjöberg, 1996). Measurement of the slope profile before failure provides the basic information required for a back analysis (Hock & Bray, 1981). The post-slide topography is another key factor. The back analysis process for determining the actual strength parameters of soil or a decomposed rock mass after a landslide requires knowledge of the sliding mass geometry, both before and after the sliding event. Many studies are reported in the literature about the application of back analysis for determining geotechnical and geomechanical parameters of rock and soil mass (Sakurai et al., 2003; Cepuritis et al. 2010; Frayssines and Hantz, 2009, Hussain and Stark, 2011), but they generally present little information about the geometry of the slide surface, and the weight of rock and soil mass that slid, although these factors are the most important parameters for back analysis process. Liang and Xue-song (2012) determined the slip surface having the minimum factor of safety (called critical slip surface in deterministic analysis of slopes) and the slip surface with the minimum reliability index (called critical reliability slip surface), but they have not considered the actual profile and geometry of the slide surface. Rocscience (2013) proposes the back analysis option in the Slide software for slope stability study, but it requires an imposed slide surface as input; alternatively, one can estimate by a finite element analysis the surface with the minimum factor of safety. However, this estimated surface is very likely different from the actual sliding surface, considering the uncertainties in input data of the finite element method."

I read Professor Gaudin&apos;s paper with great interest and pleasure because for some time I have held that the chemical aspect of comminution is a subject of considerable importance to the mineral dresser and deserves to be thoroughly investigated. It does seem appropriate, however, to emphasize the fact that "fresh" edges and corners produced by the grinding of solids display enhanced reactivity has been recognized and utilized in the development of certain mineral identification techniques. Some of these techniques are worth noting, not only because they might facilitate research in the aspect of mineral dressing under discussion, but also because they emphasize the fact that many mineral species commonly regarded as being very inert can display a surprising reactivity when in the freshly ground state. In 1951 Isakov6 published a number of tests for the components of certain mineral species which depend essentially on grinding in a mortar a mixture of the material under investigation with a solid reagent. Thus when stibnite, 4(Sb2S3), is ground with sodium or potassium hydroxide. the antimony is revealed by a momentary development of a yellow color which changes in air to orange-red. Other antimony minerals need a preliminary treatment before the test can be carried out. This consists of grinding with aluminium sulfate, ferric sulfate or potassium bisulfate, and breathing upon the resultant mixture. I have employed a similar technique to determine the approximate magnesia content of certain limestones.&apos; The method depends essentially on the fact that when a sample of limestone is ground under controlled conditions with solutions of sodium hydroxide and Titan yellow the color of the final product is, within limits, a function of the amount of magnesia present. I have also shown that the components of a wide range of minerals can be identified by applying chemicals to their streaks on portions of vitrified, unglazed floor tiles, etc. Under such circumstances the diversity of the reactions which take place in the cold (because of the reactivity of fresh corners and edges) is surprising. Thus, for example, if a garnierite, (Ni,Mg)3Si2O5(OH)1, streak is treated first with a drop of 0.880 ammonia and then with a drop of a 1 pct alcoholic dimethyl-glyoxime it immediately becomes red, indicating the presence of nickel.&apos; Stevens and Carron9 have evolved a simple field test for distinguishing minerals by "abrasion pH." A soft nonabsorbent mineral is scratched in a drop of water on a streak plate until a milky suspension is formed. A piece of pH indicator paper is dipped into the suspension, after which it is removed and the maximum deviation from neutrality noted. When a hard mineral or one which absorbs water is being tested, fragments are first ground for 1 min with a few drops of water in a mortar to make a heavy suspension. The importance of the findings of such tests to mineral dressing may be judged by the abrasion pH values, Table 11, recorded by Stevens and Carron for certain species usually regarded as comparatively inert. The combined results Of the above researches clearly indicate that comminution is capable of altering the pH of a pulp and of causing the chemical nature of the surfaces of some of the components to be profoundly changed&apos; Depending On circumstances such surface alterations may have a beneficial or an adverse effect if these products are subsequently subjected to flotation. The tests also suggest that by grinding "inert" minerals with appropriate solid or liquid reagents "reactive" surfaces may be developed which might facilitate separations by flotation. It is an interesting and instructive problem to determine the reactions that are likely to take place when dry solid substances are subjected to comminution and to the unavoidable heat liberated during the process. To do this it is theoretically necessary to know the free energy values of the reactants and possible resultants, but unfortunately there is a dearth of such data! However, the heats of formation of many substances are known, and generally speaking, if in a reaction of the type AB + CD = AD + CB the sum of the heats of formation of AB and CD is less than that of AD and CB the reaction will probably proceed to the right. Thus, according to a note I have (the author of which I cannot name) if PbS (black) is warmed with CdSO, (white), PbSO., (white) and CdS (yellow) are formed, and that the reaction does, in fact, take place is indicated by the change in color of the mixture. The reaction is expected, as the sum of the heats of formation of PbS and CdSO, is less than that of PbSO, and CdS (as shown below). PbS + CdSO4 = PbSO4 + CdS 22.2 + 218.0 < 216.2 + 33.9 Finally, certain other aspects of the chemistry of comminution, which are neither mentioned by Professor Gaudin nor referred to by me are to be found in a paper by Welsh" and in the printed discussion thereof. A. M. Gaudin (author&apos;s reply)—The observations contributed by Dr. Hosking are indeed welcome, as they add to our experimental knowledge of a topic which is believed to be of the first importance. In connection with the experiments cited it should be kept in mind that oxidation, hydration, and carbonation at various rates should always be deemed to be possibilities when grinding is done in water or in air, even in "industrially dry" air. Special precautions might lead to sufficient minimizing of these reactions and to the assertion, instead, of deliberately-created reactions. Eutectic freeze crystallisation is a novel separation technique that can be applied to treat brine solutions such as reverse osmosis retentates, which are often a mixture of different inorganic salts. The treatment of calcium sulphate-rich brine solutions through eutectic freeze crystallisation has resulted in gypsum scale formation on the walls of the crystallisers and ancillary equipment. In order to prevent gypsum scaling on equipment surfaces, it is essential to understand the mechanism of gypsum scaling on cold surfaces. This paper focused on the interaction between gypsum crystallisation in the bulk solution and scaling on the crystalliser walls in the presence of gypsum seeds. A cooled, U-shaped stainless-steel tube suspended in the saturated solution was employed as the scaling surface. Preliminary results showed that the scale layer was predominantly composed of needle-type and hexagonal prismatic crystals. The rate of scale deposition was highest during the first 24 hours, thereafter it decreased. A thin scale layer was observed to have coated the tube within the first hour of the experiment. Seeding, using reagent grade gypsum crystals, was effective in reducing scale layer formation through providing a surface for growth. The highest scale reduction, 81%, was realised at a seed loading of 0.50 g/L. At a high seed loading of 4.01 g/L, the seed material adhered to the tube. The isothermal formation of martensite is studied in Fe-Ni-Mn and Fe-Mn-C alloys under conditions where the athermal transformation is completely avoided, there being no martensite present at the beginning of the isothermal reaction. The initial rate of martensite formation is extremely low under these conditions, but it increases greatly as soon as some martensite is formed. It appears that true initial characteristics of the isothermal reaction can be studied only in samples wherein the formation of martensite on cooling is completely eliminated. THE phenomenon of isothermal martensite formation is well established1 -" but the observations have been made in the presence of varying quantities of athermal martensite. Complete avoidance of athermal martensite and the formation of martensite under pure isothermal conditions have been reported by Kurdjumov and Maksimova2 in an Fe-Ni-Mn alloy (23 pct Ni, 3.4 pct Mn, and the balance Fe) and have been confirmed by recent experiments of Cech and Hollomon in a similar alloy. In each case, the isothermal transformation rate was a maximum at the beginning of the transformation and decreased as the reaction proceeded. These initial transformation rates were used by Fisher7 for the confirmation of calculated nucleation rates based on classical nucleation theory extended to include the effect of elastic strain energy. Cech and Hollomon have admitted, however, that up to 3 pct martensite formed on cooling in their samples and thus was present at the initiation of their isothermal runs. In this paper, experiments on similar alloys are described, except that care was taken to remove the incidental martensite developed at the surface prior to the isothermal reaction. It is shown here that the reaction rate at the beginning of the strictly isothermal reaction is very low. As soon as some detectable amount of martensite is produced, the transformation rate increases rapidly but ultimately decreases as the reaction proceeds. When martensite is allowed to form isothermally in the presence of about 2 pct of prior martensite, the apparent initial reaction rate is a maximum and corresponds to the observations of Kurdjumov and Maksimova and Cech and Hollomon. It is evident that the cooperative nature of the martensitic reaction results in a significant stimulating or autocatalytic effect on the isothermal reaction rate. Experimental Procedure The chemical compositions of the alloys used in this investigation are listed in Table I. The Fe-Ni-Mn alloys A and B were melted in an induction furnace, cast into ingots 2 in. diam by 4 in. long, and forged into % in. diam rods. The manganese steel (alloy C) was melted in an arc furnace and cast into ceramic molds 1/4 in. diam by 5 in. long. The rods were sealed in evacuated Vycor tubes and homogenized at 1175" to 1200°C for 50 hr. The long homogenization resulted in some manganese loss from the surface, producing a thin layer of transformed material. This surface layer was removed by grinding and the specimens were then swaged to 0.050 in. diam wire. Measurements of electrical resistance were made with a Kelvin double bridge to follow the course of the martensitic transformation. A small permanent magnet was also useful in scanning an entire specimen for small localized quantities of martensite. This test is almost as sensitive as the electrical resistance method in detecting the presence of martensite (which is ferromagnetic in these alloys) and it was especially useful in deciding whether a specimen was completely free of martensite. The wire specimens (0.050 in. diam by 2.5 in. long) were sealed in evacuated tubes and austenitized for 5 min at 1150°C. The specimens were quenched into water and, unless otherwise stated, stress-relieved for 1 hr at 650 °C in order to induce greater uniformity in the subsequent martensitic transformation. As dem-

In the east of Frankfurt am Main, Germany, a new high-rise building is planned directly next to the river Main. The high-rise building will have a height of about 75 m and will be founded on a Combined Pile-Raft Foundation (CPRF) in the tertiary marl. The new structure will be constructed next to important, sensitive traffic infrastructure. The foundation of the new high-rise building adjoins directly existing historic quay structures, which are more than 100 years old. For analysis of the stability and the serviceability of the heavily eccentric loaded foundation of the new high-rise building and the existing structures and for the investigation of the soil-structure interaction complex three dimensional, non-linear numerical simulations have been carried out. These numerical simulations take into account all geometric and material specific boundary conditions, including the history of the construction of the whole area. The paper introduces into a very complex construction project in which the investigation of the soil-structure interaction has an important role. The three-dimensional numerical simulations are explained and the results are shown.

The success of a facility during an inspection depends on several factors including, the preparation prior to an inspection, behavior and activities during and inspection, and finally, action taken following the inspection. This paper contains suggestions for improving inspection results and establishing an attitude of compliance at manufacturing and mining facilities.

"The pitting susceptibility of aluminium metal matrix composites reinforced with garnet particles has been examined using static weight loss method by exposing the metal matrix composites (MMC) specimens to the action of IN HCI acid at laboratory temperature for different time intervals. It was found that the corrosion rate decreased with increase in weight percentage of reinforcement while the corrosion rate was a function of the matrix alloy but not of the reinforcement material. Further, it was found that the rate of corrosion was dependent on the interface region formed between the reinforcement and the matrix. A comparison of the base matrix with the corresponding composite when subjected to heat treatment for varying periods of 4, 8, and 12 hours respectively was made. The comparison revealed that corrosion resistance of the composite increased with the duration of heat treatment and this has established a considerable improvement in corrosion resistance of the composite when compared with the base matrix.IntroductionMetal matrix composites (MMCs) offer designers many added benefits, as they are particularly suited for applications requiring good strength at high temperature, good structural rigidity, dimensional stability, and light weight [1-5]. The trend is towards safe usage of the MMC parts in the automobile engine, which work particularly at high temperature and pressure environments [6-7]. Particles reinforced MMCs have been most popular over the last two decades. Among the MMCs, the most popular families are represented by aluminium reinforced with ceramic particles. Although the incorporation of the second phase into a matrix material can enhance the physical and mechanical properties of the base metal, it could also significantly change the corrosion behavior."

(New York meeting, February, 1913.) IN the study of ore deposits water plays a very prominent part. The small group of igneous ores involve it least, but in all the rest it is an invariable feature. The ground-water, therefore, is perhaps as appropriate a subject for discussion before a session of the American Institute of Mining Engineers as any topic which might be selected. The theme is if anything the more appropriate, because two very important contributions to it have already appeared in the Transactions. The great essay in 1893 of Franz Posepny,1 systematized and classified the subject, and was doubtless not without its influence in leading to the presentation in 1900, by C. R. Van Hise, of an important contribution entitled Some Principles Controlling the Deposition of Ores.2 We all recall the discussions of 10 or 12 years ago, and the interest in these themes which then prevailed in the Institute. They are collectively accessible in the separate edition wisely assembled by Dr. Raymond, and now to be supplemented by the Emmons Volume. Views have been progressing in the past decade or more, and new evidence has been brought to light. A general summary and concise statement may, therefore, not be without interest.

Surveying is to tunneling, as a steering wheel is to a car—somewhat essential if you want to end up in the right place. The principles of tunnel surveying have remained unchanged since the first tunnels were constructed: To mathematically connect the selected start and end points of a tunnel and physically translate that alignment onto the ground. The alternative is just dead-reckoning and leaves the probably less than satisfying end results to chance. Today’s laser-guided tunnels often have to thread the needle through a maze of soil types, utilities, structural features and other underground considerations. Surveying makes it possible.

The Sc-Ti system was studied by thermal, metal-lographic, and X-ray methods. Scandium was found to transform at 1334 °C from a (hexagonal) to ß which was concluded to be bee since a continuous series of solid solutions is formed between ß scandium and ß titanium at elevated temperatures. There is a minimum in the solidus at 51 wt pet Ti and 1300°C, a monotectoid at 1050°C and 49 wt pet Ti, and a eutectoid at 875°C and 91.5 wt pet Ti. The maximum solubility of titanium in a scandium is 13.5 wt pet at the monotectoid temperature, while the maximum solubility of scandium in a titanium is 6.5 wt pet at 875°C. SCANDIUM, a member of Group 111 A of the periodic table, and now called a rare-earth metal,&apos; has become of interest recently due to its low density (2.99 g per cc) and relatively high melting point (1539°C).Spedding,&apos; et al. have described a method of preparation of pure scandium metal and have made a study of its basic properties. Since scandium is approximately 10 to 12 pet smaller in at. diam than the other rare earths while its electronegativity and valence are the same, a knowledge of its alloying behavior in contrast to these elements should be very helpful to fundamental alloy theory. Since scandium is quite scarce and difficult to prepare in pure form, its use as a structural material by itself seems quite unlikely. However, its use in special cases as an alloying addi- tive to other low-density materials is a possible application; the Sc-Ti system was chosen for this reason and for others of fundamental interest. Scandium was suspected of having a high temperature bee form as do some of the other rare-earth metals.3&apos;4 Since titanium has a high-temperature bee form, a continuous series of solid solutions at elevated temperatures between ß scandium and ß titanium would prove the existence and structure of the high-temperature form of scandium. The existence of a continuous series of hexagonal solid solutions at room temperature was predicted by Burkhanov and Savitskiy,5 but Hias shown to be incorrect in early X-ray studies. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Materials. The metals employed in this investigation were crystal bar titanium and distilled scandium prepared by the method described by Spedding,2 et al. The major impurities are listed in Table I in PPm. Alloy Preparation.
