The new tunnel at Genting Sempah is part of a privately funded infrastructure projectthat involves duplicating the existing highway extending from the Gombok Toll Plaza near Kuala Lumpur to Karak, in Malaysia. The 60 km long tollway includes an 800 m long, two-lane highway tunnel with excavated dimensions of 10.5 m wide by 8 m high. The majority of the tunnel extends through slightly to moderately weathered, moderately to highly jointed quartz porphyry. Excavation of the tunnel was performed using drill and blast methods and the primary tunnel support consists of rock dowels and shotcrete except for short sections adjacent to the portals where steel sets were utilized. A portion of the tunnel encountered sheared and altered material that was successfully supported using rock dowels and shotcrete. The final lining for the tunnel consists of mesh and fiber reinforced shotcrete. The flexible nature of the primary support and shotcrete final lining resulted in considerable cost savings and expedient construction methods.

According to the "Survey of Energy Resources 1980" (1)*, which was prepared by the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Raw Materials in Hannover (FRG)for the World Energy Conference 1980 in Munich, the world coal deposits are assessed at 775 billion tce proven reserves 448 billion tce of them recoverable and 6 161 billion tce additional resources. If one ignores growth rates, the current world coal output of 2,8 billion tpy gives our recoverable reserves a static life expectancy of 175 years. With an average increase in world output of 3,2 % like between 1973 and 1980 this range would be further shortened to an alarming degree. Furthermore, the criteria used to distinguish between workable and unworkable resources give rise to the suspicion that deposit characteristics are not always taken into account to a sufficient degree. For example, little attention is paid to major ?Bonitaet" - factors such as dip and seam thickness. There have been wide-ranging scientific discussions on the lower limit for workable coal resources, but no such limits have been set at the other end of the scale. Otherwise it is well known that performance and costs are badly affected den in level and moderately inclined seams the seam thickness is more than 4 to 5 m, because special mining methods have to be used beyond this limit. These are associated with significantly higher costs than with the winning of seams of ?normal? thickness.

Titanium (Ti) metal production from titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) using magnesium (Mg) as a reducing agent is the well-known Kroll process. A chloride route is used to avoid oxidation of the titanium sponge. The sponge is consolidated into ingots and can then be made into powder by melting and atomizing or by hydriding/dehydriding. Attempts at direct powder production have met with difficulties, including low Ti yield and the formation of very fine particles (particles between 25-100 µm are desired). This paper discusses two methods to produce Ti powder in a molten salt medium using magnesium powder as a starting material instead of a pool of molten magnesium. The first method is a direct reduction of gaseous TiCl4 injected in the melt with the magnesium powder in suspension in the molten salt. The second method is a two stage TiCl4 reduction reaction where recycled Ti was used to form titanium dichloride (TiCl2) in the first stage followed by addition of magnesium powder into molten salt in the second stage. A correlation between Ti yield and processing variables such as TiCl4 to Mg ratio, Mg particle size, TiCl2 concentration in the melt, and reaction temperature was studied. The Ti powder formed was also analyzed for particle size distribution. Despite challenges and difficulties encountered, this paper shows some promising results which could provide guidance to others working on direct Ti powder production.

TIE fundamental principle of resistance thermometry lies in the determination of temperatures by the measurement of an electrical conductor subjected to various temperatures and the translation of the resultant changes, in ohms, into temperature equivalents. Such resistance measurements can be made with maximum precision by the use of a standard Wheatstone bridge and a reflecting galvanometer of high sensitivity. Under such conditions, results are obtainable that may be accurate within 0.1 or even 0.01 per cent., and the "idiosyncrasies" of heated electrical conductors can be studied with advantage and profit, even if the latter is not of a financial nature. The chief requisites for producing a serviceable -commercial instrument may be enumerated as follows: First, there must be a resistor or "bulb" that can stand the maximum temperature without deterioration and which has a pronounced temperature coefficient. Second, there should be constructed an "even" bridge, having two fixed arms of equal values, in ohms. Third, a rheostat, the maximum resistance of which will be equal to the total change in the resistance of the bulb, between temperature extremes, is required. Fourth, there must be a sensitive galvanometer which is aperiodic, or nearly so. Finally, there should be a fairly steady source of direct current. The general scheme of this type of apparatus, in its simplest form, can be readily understood by reference to Fig. 1. Resistors A and B are constructed of manganin, therlo, or some other resistance wire having a negligible temperature coefficient. The sensitive D'Arsonval galvanometer G has its zero in the center. R is a rheostat and X is a resistor or bulb made of insulated platinum wire, or else of nickel, copper, or some alloy, according to requirements. K is a battery, but a direct-current service line is often used instead, with sufficient ballast in series to properly reduce the current.

The coral contaminated with plutonium at Johnston Atoll UA) was subjected to gravity and flotation separation processes at the Soil Washing Laboratory (SWL) and also at the Johnston Atoll UA) site. Tests were conducted with the contaminated coral fractions referred to as the "HP-l" ( hot particles) and the "sludge". The gravity process tested was centrifugal gravity separation and the flotation processes were conventional Denver mechanical flotation and tall column flotation. Flotation tests were conducted using both fresh and sea water. Industrial fatty acid (anionic collector) was chosen as collector to make plutonium-enriched particles hydrophobic. The use of flurosilicic acid and sodium silicate made the clean coral hydrophilic. The results show that each of the processed when tested with appropriate size fraction and operating conditions resulted in passing the success criteria. It was possible to obtain more than 80% weight of the original coral as "clean sand" having activity below the JA site "soil screening level" of 13.5 pCi/gm. The field tests spiked with plutonium particles showed remarkable success. The effect of depressants, flotation medium and the coral pretreatmentis described. Finally, a flowsheet developed by the University of Nevada, Reno to treat 8000 tons of HP-l pile presently stored at JA is presented.

Open pits and quarries are the major sources of all hard rock tonnages mined today. Normally, ore is fractured from the pit bench face by blasting and then truck-hauled to a primary crusher on the pit rim for conveying to the concentrator; overburden (or waste) is generally truck- hauled from the pit to dump areas. This system of truck haulage of blasted ore and waste accounts for some 25 to 50% of total mining costs in a typical open pit operation and commonly is the largest single cost factor. In an effort to reduce these costs mining companies are continually replacing their older and smaller trucks with larger ones and at the same time are studying conversions to conveyor haulage, since this method of transport seems to offer possibilities of lower costs per ton of material handled. In these studies it seems logical to consider installing these conveyors as close as possible to the mining face for maximum use of conveyors and minimum use of trucks, since a conveyor is much less labor intensive than a trucking system. However, direct loading onto a conveyor near the retreating bench face is impractical because of excessive lump size. Consequently, it is conventional practice to load the blasted rock into trucks at the face for haulage to the crusher. After crushing, the rock is fed onto a conveyor. The closer the crusher is to the mine, or if it is in the mine, the shorter the truck haul and the greater the potential for cost saving. At first appearance, in-pit conveying might seem to be an obvious solution, yet many mining companies have considered such a move while few have implemented it. To determine why, it is necessary to consider the factors influencing such a decision. A conveyor system tends to be capital intensive but can have a lower operating cost per ton than trucks. Trucks, on the other hand, tend to cost less to buy but more to operate; thus, economics tend to favor the conveyor if it can be operated close to capacity and if a sufficiently large tonnage can be passed over the system to mitigate the effect of its high capital cost. In a typical hard-rock, open-pit mine it is necessary for a variety of reasons to mine several faces of both ore and waste at the same time; and any mining system must have sufficient flexibility to permit loading from one face or another at short notice. This makes it impractical to place small mobile crushers and their consequent network of conveyors at each working face. To date no alternative has been found to using trucks for bringing all rock of the same class to some convenient marshalling point from which it may be crushed and conveyed from the pit. Another advantage of trucking when compared to conveying is flexibility. Many mines wish to deliver their shot-rock to different locations, depending on the mineral content. During 1998, 62 million tons of iron ore pellets valued at $1.7 billion were shipped from U.S. mines. These pellets are the primary source for domestic iron and steel production. During pelletization, binders are required to improve the green strength of the pellets. Each year, bentonite binder costs a typical plant from $3 million to $5 million. Reducing the bentonite dosage has the advantages of significant cost savings while producing higher quality, lower silica pellets. The authors have recently identified a new and important bentonite binding mechanism, the fiber theory. During this study, procedures were developed that took advantage of the ability of bentonite to form fibers, and resulted in a dramatic decrease in the necessary bentonite dosage. Acceptable quality pellets were produced with the bentonite dosages reduced in half from 14 lb/lt (0.66%) to 7 lb/lt (0.33%).

SINCE the opening of the Wheeler oil and gas field in Carter County and the discovery of oil near Lawton, Comanche County, Okla., in 1904, interest has been aroused regarding the origin of the oil in the Permian "Red Bed" region which lies between the Wichita and Arbuckle Mountains on the north and the Red River on. the south. . The later development of the Healdton, Loco, Duncan, Fox, and Graham fields south and west of the Arbuckle Mountains has brought the region into prominence. Recent discoveries of Ordovician and of Pennsylvanian fossils in wells in the Healdton field and of Pennsylvanian fossils in the Fox and Graham fields are of such importance from a scientific and a commercial standpoint that the occurrences and the problems arising therefrom are here briefly described. Producing oil and gas sands in the southern Oklahoma fields, with the exception -of those in the Cretaceous and underlying rocks in the vicinity of Madill, Marshall. County, are associated with the Permian "Red Beds" or with the underlying Paleozoic strata. I n the two fields farthest south of the Arbuckle Mountains, Healdton and Loco, production has been entirely confined to sands at depths of 700 to 1400 ft. (213 to 416 m.) and only recently has a producing sand as deep as 1860. ft. (567 m.) L been encountered. These sands are found near and below the base of the red rocks and were supposed by Wegemann and Heald 2 to belong in large part to the basal Permian,. Wichita formation, or to the immediately underlying formations. Fossils in the blue shales and in the limestones associated with the deeper sands' now prove them to be Pennsylvanian and all-the producing sands at Healdton are found to be of this age. In the fields nearest the Arbuckle Mountains, the Wheeler sands at a depth of about 700 ft. (213 m.) appear to be of Permian age,

The Altair process employs digestion of ilmenite ore in concentrated hydrochloric acid, solvent extraction to concentrate Ti in a purified stream and spray hydrolysis to produce a TiO2 hydrate, followed by final calcining and milling. HCl gas is regenerated by pressure-swing distillation and reinjected in the leaching solution. All chloride streams are recycled. Chromium compounds generally remain in the residue. Solvent extraction provides flexibility for the removal of naturally occurring radioactive elements (NORMs) present in some ilmenites. The process was previously tested at a 5 t/day feed scale. Recent work at pilot scale (40 liter reactor) led to further improvements. Recovery of Ti in solution is now at least 90% with ilmenite ores, while crystallization at lower temperature lowers the amount of Fe in solution to about 5 g/l and improves solvent extraction, which is now conducted in columns. Higher Ti and lower Fe concentrations in the SX eluate improve the economics. A new formula for pigment production via spray hydrolysis produces a pigmentary base with a narrow particle size distribution.

With the continuing demand for industrialisation and urbanisation, the rate of mining and processing lower grade ores will also increase, producing large quantities of waste. As extreme weather events associated with global climatic changes are to be expected, the risk from mine tailings management will also increase (Edraki et al., 2014). In sulfide rich tailings, weathering within the critical zone controls the fate and distribution of the contaminants such as copper, zinc, and lead in the environment (Hayes et al., 2014). Tailings evolve geochemically and physically with time as they age under the influence of complex interacting factors. Understanding of the complex interactions between these controlling factors is important for predicting and mitigating the potential risks associated with sulfide tailings such as generation of acid mine drainage (Lindsay et al., 2015). Wetting and drying initiates weathering processes, influencing the hydrological, geochemical and geomechanical properties of the tailings. In semi-arid climates where evaporation exceeds precipitation, salts may precipitate within the pore system as well as on the tailings surface. These salts become the temporal sink of heavy metals until the next episodic rainfall (Nordstrom, 2011, Grover et al., 2016). Therefore, using kinetic and static test to describe the trajectory of these material evolutions without considering the complex interactions could potentially lead to erroneous prediction. The critical distance determination test through direct recording for the mine in Phase 03 was carried out in January 2024, and in it the vibration and pressure models were obtained for the Sedimentary breccia unit. The method of obtaining the records is based on the capture of individual pressure waves generated by distant loads, sequenced in periods of 600 ms for easy identification. The test set up corresponds to a variation of that used to obtain the vibration model, and uses 08 wells for loads and 04 for instrumentation. The results apply a safety factor of 1.2 and 1.5, being 16,000 PSI and 13,250 PSI respectively. The values are valid for any distance greater than 5.5 m, this being the minimum established between wells for loads according to the configuration defined in the field, also considering that in 5.0 m of instrumentation the section of the drill hole with the sensor called S1 collapsed. The results of the analysis of the test, generated with Heavy Anfo 82 explosive, with a final density of 1.15 g/cc, are presented. The results of the modeling and generation of the graphs and tables presented show behavior in line with the concept of scaled distance. It is important to consider that in water conditions there is a high impact by the condition, which causes the records to be higher than those expected in dry conditions and present less variability. It is for the above reason that the row corresponding to distance with safety factor 1.5 is declared valid. The results are only valid for the rock analyzed, whose medium is homogeneous and constant in terms of lithological composition and that present similar resistance characteristics, fracture frequency and water table levels. As future steps, the objective is to quantify the increase in pressure generated between wells by analyzing time and sequence factors. This analysis aims to explain the occurrence of dynamic pressure events in areas where critical safety distances are observed.

NeaR the town of Christiansburg, Va., occurs a singular feature in topographical as well as geological structure, which may be said to have an important bearing on a large area to the southwest. The great water-shed ridge, which divides the waters flowing into the St. Lawrence from those flowing into the Atlantic ocean, coming southwestward, forms all of what was the boundary of Maine as agreed upon by the treaty of 1783, and a part of the present boundary, all of the northern New Hampshire boundary, and entering Vermont, continues south of Lake George. Passing irregularly through New York, it enters Pennsylvania, and there bifurcating, sends one prong to the west as a divide between the waters of the lakes and the Ohio, while the other becomes the steady, regular ridge which gave it the name of Alleghany, and thus passes on southwestward through Virginia. At no point has it ever been the geological divide. Its course, commencing in the Archean rocks, has passed through nearly every series of formation, and comes into Virginia in the Carboniferous strata. The geological divide—the line between the fossiliferous and the non-fossiliferous rocks—lies, in Canada, to the west of it, but from New York south into Virginia is far to the east. Reference to Dr. Hitchcock'k map will show this. But at the locality noted these positions are changed; the water-divide becomes the eastern chain, and the geological divide is the western, returning, it may be said, to the positions occupied in the region where they originated. The scorched desert sands and life giving waters of the River Nile in Egypt have been the back drop to awe inspiring engineering feats for over 4,700 years. The latest engineering marvel to grace the land of the Pharaohs is the Mubarak Pumping Station Project at Toshka. This ambitious project aims to open up an area of 607,000 hectares (1.5 million acres) of barren desert to irrigation based farming with the supply of 29 million tonnes (32 million tons) of water per day, drawn from Lake Nasser on the river Nile. It is anticipated that this currently unpopulated area of southern Egypt will soon flourish and become home to several million Egyptians who will conduct their lives around the water supplied by the 230 kilometers (144 miles) of concrete canals. An integral part of the pumping station is the intake canal. The canal was excavated in two sections – the dry excavation, and the wet excavation. The wet excavation comprised of some 5.5 million cubic meters (7.2 million cubic yards) of rock to be drilled, blasted, and excavated, from the surface of the lake. The challenge at hand was how to achieve this safely, quickly, and cost effectively, with water depths of up to 45 meters (148 feet), excavation depths of up to 47 meters (154 feet), blast production rate peaks of up to 30,000 bank cubic meters (39,200 bank cubic yards) per day, blistering summer air temperatures up to 60°C (140°F), and security concerns about the storage of large quantities of explosives in the Middle East region. The solutions to these challenges were engineered by UEE Explosives and centered around the use of a microgel bulk explosive called Rioflex™ and an international team of engineers and operators from three continents. The microgel and accompanying pumping system allowed pumping rates of up to 17,400 kg (38,400 lb) per day, and more importantly, enabled the bulk product to remain as an oxidizing matrix whilst in transport and storage, transforming into an explosive only moments before being pumped into the blastholes. This case study outlines the underwater drill and blast process employed at the Mubarak Pumping Station Project at Toshka, and the novel solutions to the unique challenges encountered.

A series of iron-leaching experiments were conducted to test the ability of metal-reducing anaerobic organisms to reduce iron from Fe3+ to Fe2+ to dissolve it from iron ore tailings. This bioleaching process involves the fermentation of biomass from Typha latifolia (a common wetland plant) to generate organic compounds, which, along with metal-reducing organisms, reduce and dissolve iron. The concentration of dissolved iron over time was studied for one year. Iron concentration above 1150 mg/L was achieved at a pH range of 3.95–5.36. Tailings from multiple locations were examined.

This study aimed to remove the contaminants in quartz sand by using an eco-friendly method and to obtain high-purity quartz. For this purpose, ultrasound-assisted acid leaching was applied. Equal amounts of a mixture of diluted hydrochloric and oxalic acids were used as the solvent. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used for optimizing, modeling, and predicting the experimental parameters. The correlation coefficient ( R2) of the proposed quadratic model for the relationship between iron removal yield and test parameters was calculated as 0.9731 and it was determined that the predicted and actual values were compatible. Finally, optimization experiments were made and optimum experiment conditions were revised and determined as 83.38 °C of leaching temperature, 196.35 min of leaching time, 2.86 M of acid concentration, and 202.24 W of ultrasound power. Under the optimum conditions determined after optimization, the highest yield of iron removal was determined as 95.08%. Under the optimal parameters, the SiO2 content of the concentrates increased from 97.841 to 99.907% and the Fe2O3 content reduced from 0.225 to 0.011%.

A 2.5 meter diameter column has been successfully used in a 100 tph flotation plant at the Harbour Lights Mine in Leonora, Western Australia, to produce a final gold bearing sulfide concentrate from the ore in a single stage. This pioneering application of column flotation cells to rougher stage was pilot tested using a 11 cm column, which demonstrated column's capability in rougher, scavenger and cleaner flotation stages. A hybrid circuit involving columns and mechanically agitated flotation cell s was adopted for the commercial installation. This paper describes pilot plant results, design of the plant flotation circuit, and early results of commercial operation.

The Manto Verde copper mine (Atacama Region, Chile) is due to go into production in 1996. It will produce 40 000 tonne/year of copper cathode by heap leaching/SX-EW. Mineralogical studies were undertaken in conjunction with the metallurgical testwork program to characterise the ore and its response to leaching by dilute sulphuric acid. The leachable copper mineralogy is dominated by the oxide copper minerals: brochantite and malachite with minor chrysocolla and atacamite. The gangue minerals include abundant orthoclase, specularite, quartz and chlorite with minor muscovite and trace smectite clay, calcite and limonite. The study showed that complete or partial decomposition of calcite, chlorite, smectite and wad consumed acid and generated solution impurities (Ca2+, Fe2+, Mg2+, A13+, K+, Si4+ and Mn4+2+ ). Although these were manageable at Manto Verde, their uncontrolled build-up could have affected the operation in several ways: the degradation of heap penneability and fonnation of crud in the SX plant from the precipitation of gypsum, goethite, colloidal silica and jarosite; and the entrainment of contaminated pregnant leach solution in the SX organic resulting in the transfer of impurities to the electrolyte and subsequent effects on cathode quality and electrowinning efficiency. In conclusion, process mineralogy played an important role in understanding and managing potential mineral-related problems in the heap leaching and SX-EW recovery of Manto Verde ore.
