THIS is a progress report of an experiment being undertaken in cooperation with the Bethlehem Steel Corp., the Crucible Steel Co., and the Rock Bit Sales and Service Co., involving heat treatment of the shank ends of drill steel. This experiment is being conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in its experimental mine, Mining Research Branch, Bluemont, Va. The purpose of the experiment is to determine the effect of an increase in the time the steel soaks in the furnace during the hardening heat. It has been thought that increasing this time produces a soft zone below the lugs resulting in a metallurgical notch that causes early failure. Each of the steel companies furnished enough 11/4 - in. straight carbon, hollow, round steel to make up 10 sets of drill steel, in each instance the steel bars were from the same heat. These sets of drill steel, consisting of 2-ft, 4-ft, 6-ft, and 8-ft lengths were fabricated by the Rock Bit Sales and Service Co. Special attention was given to the forging of the steel to produce the best rods possible. The heat treatment of all thread ends was identical and followed the best practice. The heat treatment of the shank ends of five sets of steel from each company produced a soft zone 2 to 4 in. in front of the lugs. It was decided that possibly the best way to obtain this effect was not to overlap the hardening heat but to let the steel soak for an additional 30 min before quenching. Therefore the only variable in the test steels is the length of time the shank ends were in the furnace. The remaining drill steel shanks were treated as follows: Heat treatment in pyrometer-controlled furnace at 1550°F. Quenching oil at 105°F to 125°F temperature. Areas for heat treatment were; shanks, 11 in.; threads, 9 in. Time at heat, standard practice, 20 min for 11/4-in. steel. Actual drilling tests were made in greenstone, (a metamorphosed basaltic rock), and in epidosite. Greenstone has a specific gravity of 2.96 and a compressive strength of 44,200 psi. Epidosite has a specific gravity of 3.26 and a compressive strength of 63,100 psi. All drilling tests were made using a 31/2-in. column-mounted, automatic feed drifter, with a controlled air pressure of 90 psi at the throttle. Tungsten-carbide bits of 2 in. diameter were used for all drilling. Contrary to expectations the drill steels that were allowed to soak for the additional 30 min before quenching performed better than the steels that were heat treated according to standard practice. This performance, as shown in Table I, was especially noticeable in the drilling of epidosite. The "longheat" drill steels furnished by Company "A" drilled 154 pct more minutes than the "standard-heat" steel. Expressed in feet, the "long-heat" steel drilled 114.60 ft more before failure than the "standard-heat" steel. The "long-heat" steel furnished by Company "B" drilled 37 pet more minutes or 60.39 ft more before failure than the "standard-heat" drill steel. The effect of the long heat treatment was not as evident when the steels were drilling in greenstone (Table II). In greenstone, the increase in minutes drilled by the "long-heat" steel over the "standard-heat" steel was 47 pet and 1 pet, respectively, for Companies "A" and "B."

Natural stones are extensively used for construction purposes since the dawn of human civilization, due to their unique aesthetical and technical characteristics. Their production and consumption has been continuously increasing over the past twenty years worldwide at an annual rate of 8.8%. European countries lead the race of per capita consumption, with Switzerland being in the first place with a consumption of 144.7 m2 per hundred inhabitants followed by Greece, Spain, Portugal, Belgium and Italy. On the other hand, during the period 2001-2002 the generated stone wastes were 110 million tones according to EU data, from which only about 5 million tones were recycled or re-used mainly in the construction industry. These stone wastes the non-natural wastes such as oils or chemicals coming from the equipment and machinery employed for stone extraction and processing, are disposed in the environment, posing serious environmental threat. To achieve sustainable development of the stone sector appropriate methods that will prevent or reduce waste generation and disposal have to be identified and applied. In this work an extensive study of the stone waste management techniques applied in Europe is carried out, in order to identify the Best Available Techniques (BAT) that can be used according to the type of generated wastes and the waste management hierarchy: Waste minimisation, Re-use, Recycling and Disposal. The identification of BAT was performed based on 14 Sustainable Development Indicators (SDI), which were grouped into three categories: environmental, economic and social. The developed final list of BAT includes waste minimisation techniques, eco-management schemes, in-situ treatment and appropriate storage and selection.

THE research laboratory of this Company was recently faced with the problem of determining trace amounts of tungsten in a series of classifier sands. A spectrographie survey revealed the feasibility of using this instrument in the final evaluation, but a check of the common methods in use for the isolation of tungsten (3, 4) showed these methods to give incomplete separation for trace amounts. An investigation into the possibility of modifying these procedures, or developing others, was thus indicated. ASSAY PROCEDURE Weigh 10 grams of 200-mesh ore or concentrate into a 400-ml. beaker, wet the sample well with about 20 ml. of water, and add 100 ml. of hydrochloric acid. Cover, digest at 60° to 70° C. for about 1 hour, and then boil down to approximately 25 ml. Cool, add 25 ml. of hydrochloric acid and 10 ml. of nitric acid, and again boil to former volume. Add 20-ml. portions of nitric acid with successive boiling clown until chemical action is complete. Then add 20-ml. portions of hydrochloric acid until all nitric acid is removed. Take nearly to dryness on a law-temperature hot plate, but do not bake. Take up in 10 ml. of hydrochloric acid and 20 ml. of water and heat on a law-temperature hot plate until all iron goes into solution. Dilute to 200 ml. and heat to just below boiling. Stir in pulp of about half of a No. 41 Whatman filter paper (12.5-cm.) and continue digestion on plate with occasional stirring for 15 to 20 minutes.

During sonic logging quality control testing of the drilled shaft foundations for the replacement bridges crossing the Broad and Chechessee Rivers for SC 170 in Beaufort County, South Carolina, irregular signals were observed on a consistent basis near the shaft top elevations. These irregular sonic signals were attributed to access tube ?debonding?, which is the separation of the access tubing from the surrounding concrete. A total of 160 drilled shafts were installed for this project, of which 41 were evaluated using sonic logging testing. Both PVC and steel access tubes were used during the project to allow for sonic logging testing. This paper details the investigation of access tube debonding with time, discusses the solutions used to minimize access tube ?debonding?, and presents the results of the sonic logging testing for the entire project. The solution selected, installation of PVC along the pile length and steel access tubing within 40 feet from the top of shaft, allowed for reliable sonic logging to effectively evaluate the upper portions of the drilled shafts.

And recently, producers are looking much more carefully at rail not only to reduce fixed costs through increased volume, but also to eliminate operating headaches, such as increasing community pressures about trucks on the road, noise and dust. Many producers are uncertain as to how to enter the rail shipping business since railroads have historically been reluctant to ship small quantities short distances. This article provides strategies to help producers examine and pursue moving their rock by rail.

A regional geochemical exploration programme commenced in July 1983, based upon low-density sampling of lateritic duricrust over parts of the Yilgarn Block of Western Australia. This resulted in recognition of an area significantly anomalous in chalcophile elements that progressively led to the discovery of the Johnston Range gold deposits in 1985. The deposits, on the Barlee 1:250,000 map sheet, occur in four mineralized zones, and production is expected to commence during 1988. The programme leading to the Johnston Range discoveries was a collaborative research/ applications study between the AGE Joint Venture (Greenbushes Ltd., St. Joe Minerals, and from 1985, Sons of Gwalia NL) and the CSIRO Laterite Geochemistry Research Group (Smith, 1987). It built upon a precursor project sponsored by Greenbushes Tin Ltd that commenced in 1980 and arose from an orientation laterite research project in the Greenbushes rare metal pegmatite district (Smith et at., 1987). Both were multi-commodity programmes and included the search for gold deposits. Basic methodologies for sampling and data interpretation have been described by Smith and Perdrix (1983) and Smith et at. (1984). Continuous geochemical coverage of designated parts of greenstone belts was sought using a triangular grid of 3-km or 1-km spacing, depending upon the expected prospectivity of the areas and the size and characteristics of the ore deposit targets. Rib-related accidents in underground coal mines continue to cause injuries and take lives at a rate of 1.3 fatalities per year for the last 17 years. Prevention of these accidents cannot simply be a matter of installing more rib support, though the eventual final solution will undoubtedly include that component. Ultimately, rib safety will be brought about through an understanding of the causes and mechanisms that cause rib fatalities, and by fine-tuning mining methods and procedures that are currently in place. This paper investigates the factors likely to be most influential in the occurrence of rib fatalities. A careful analysis has been conducted of the rib fatality reports documented by the Mine Safety and Health Administration between 1996 and 2013. The primary outcome is the determination of the relative impact of each type of rib fatality factor and a better understanding of the impact each factor has. Among the rib fatality factors considered, the influence of rib profileis considered for the first time. Mining height, rib stratigraphy, mining cycle, and the standing position of a miner next to a pillar are also considered. Questions are also raised about the current interpretation of rib fatalities due to mining depth, with the indication being that mines operating at the greatest depths may actually have the most respectable rib fatality record among all mining depths. Additionally, a new method of considering rib exposure is developed. Based on the results, recommendations are made for future work. By gaining a better understanding of how particular factors contribute to rib fatalities as opposed to rib failure or stability, it is hoped that future efforts can be more precisely directed towards the desired outcome of fatality reduction.

This study investigates the roof stability of underground limestone mining in the presence of stratified joints during the excavation process. An analytical solution is derived to predict the stresses and deformation of underground tunnel structures, with the structure simplified as a double-hinge arch. The accuracy of the analytical model is validated through comparison with finite element modeling results. A parametric study is then conducted to assess the influence of different design parameters on the optimization of tunnel stability during excavation. The results indicate that the best stability of the tunnel can be achieved in engineering practices when the applied load (q) is 5 MPa and the joint inclination angle (θ) is 45°, with the roof span and thickness set at either 12 m and 8 m or 15 m and 10 m. These findings provide valuable design guidance for underground limestone mines with stratified joints.

The North Saskatchewan River flows southwest to northeast through a 22-km-long valley in the City of Edmonton, supplying the drinking water to dozens of downstream communities. During heavy rains, combined sewers occasionally overflow into the river, which has a significant negative impact on the water quality and the sensitive environment. The West Edmonton Sanitary Sewer (WESS) W12, a syphon connecting the Rat Creek Trunk to the Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant across the river, was designed and constructed to take the overflow to the wastewater treatment plant. Due to the complexity of the project, various 3D technologies were applied to facilitate decision-making processes. 3D models were developed for design review and design conflict detection, while 4D models were established to help create a robust construction schedule. Construction sequencing animation was used to convey design intents and demonstrate construction stages to contractors and workers. The combined applications of 3D technologies helped the project team to identify critical issues, and assured effective communication among engineers, management, contractors, and other parties. Therefore, it provided more opportunities for the success of the project.

Develop a simple and practical technique to measure in situ rock mass properties for realistic design and stability evaluation of underground structures. Background The Bureau of Mines has developed basic principles and techniques to determine in situ rock mass properties including Poisson's ratio, deformation modulus, and yield and failure strengths. An instrumentation package consisting of three pressure cells is installed in a single drill hole. Cell pressure response data are acquired and used to calculate and determine the rock mass properties. How It Works A test hole of BX size (approximately 5.7 cm) or larger is drilled to the approximate depth of the measuring point. The last portion of the test hole is drilled with precision bits to EX size (approximately 3.8 cm). The instrumentation package, which consists of one 3.8-cm-diameter cylindrical pressure cell (CPC) and two 5.7-cm-diameter cement-capsulated, flat borehole pressure cells (BPC's), is then installed. A complete history of cell response to changing strata loads is acquired on a continuous basis with a chart-type hydraulic pressure recorder. From these cell pressure data, Poisson's ratios, deformation moduli, and yield and failure strengths are calculated and determined.

"INTRODUCTION Oxygen, because of its vital relationship to man's physical well being, is the most important chemical_ element. It may be breathed, however, only in a rather limited range of concentrations and pressures without producing ill effects. An excess of oxygen may be equally as harmful as too little of it. Because of the importance of these effects, the study of the physiological action of oxygen has received attention for many years and by many investigators. Much of the investigative work has been directed toward determining the limits within which oxygen in abnormal concentrations and at abnormal pressures may be breathed with safety in such applica¬tions as deep-sea diving, work in comprossod-air, aviation, the wearing of apparatus designed to permit entrance into irrespirable atmospheres, and in the therapeutic applications of the medical profession.The Bureau of Mines frequently receives requests for information on the effects of breathing essentially pure oxygen, because of the Bureau's association with the use of self-contained oxygen breathing apparatus for entering irrespirable mine atmospheres, and the use of oxygen in conjunction with artificial respiration as a moans of resuscitation. The purpose of this paper is to summarize briefly the effects upon the human body of the inhalation of oxygen in various concentrations and at various pressures and to give reference to other published information that deals in greater detail with the diverse phases of the subject. The literature in this field is voluminous; therefore, a complete bibliography has not boon presented in this paper. No paper on this subject would be complete without reference to the classic pioneering work of Paul Bert (1) 3/ in this field. Articles such as those of Stadia, Riggs, and Haugaard (2), Bean (3), Specht (4), and others cited contain extensive lists of references that will leadthe reader to information in a degree of detail that is not within the scope of this publication."

The optimisation of a metallurgical plant requires two kinds of sampling systems. The first provides samples to follow process changes, so in due time actions to maintain key parameters within pre-established specifications can be applied. The second provides composite samples at the end of a working shift to demonstrate that valuable constituents sent to the plant went to either a final concentrate or to the tailings in a logical, expected proportion. Contrary to what many experts may claim, these two kinds of sampling requirements are incompatible and cannot be fulfilled using the same sampling systems; this is because the required samples have completely different objectives. A process control sample is an instantaneous sample with increments taken at short intervals, and the objective is to know where the process is at any given time. Excellent accuracy is not a must, however good precision is recommended since a possible process correction may need to be made. Online analysers fed with in-stream stationary cutters or other kinds of in-stream or by-stream probes can do well for such a mission. A composite sample for metallurgical accounting with increments collected over a long period of time, for which excellent accuracy and good precision are both required, must be generated by sophisticated and extremely well-maintained cross-stream sampling stations. The use of process control sampling systems to achieve good metallurgical accounting has been promoted by several manufacturers of sampling equipment around the world; it is a grave mistake that is misleading top management and a practice that should be scrutinised and preferably eliminated. Furthermore, bias tests used to prove otherwise are often based on insufficient data to draw valid conclusions; a guideline is provided.CITATION:Pitard, F F, 2014. INTRODUCTION The shovelling of rock in stopes is still a basic and important operation in many gold mines in the removal of gold-bearing rock from the stopes. There is, however, little factual knowledge of the factors which influence the the rates of energy expenditure and work output, and of the way in which variations in these factors, individually or in combination, affect the mechanical efficiency of the mine workers. What for example is the influence of different rates of shovelling, shovel loads and distances of throw? How does stope width and dip of the stope affect the mechanical efficiency of men shovelling rock? Recently a simple physiological test was introduced into the gold mining industry for classifying Bantu recruits into those capable of hard, moderate and light work. If this test is used to select only those Bantu mine workers who are capable of hard work for the task of shovelling rock in stopes then the rate of energy expenditure which could be expected from these men is 1.5 litres/min for the entire period of the shift. With an adequate knowledge of the influence of the various factors which affect the rate of energy expenditure of men shovelling rock in stopes it would be possible to set work standards for Bantu mine workers in stopes. This should be done in terms of the rate of shovelling, the shovel load and the distance of throw for any combination of width of stope, dip of stope, condition of foot wall and grade of rock in such a way that the resultant energy expenditure would be the 'optimum' that could be expected from the men but would be within their capacities for physical work of an endurance nature (that is, 1. 5 litres/min from the 'average' Bantu mine worker). Work standards could thereby be determined for the different stopes of a mine on a sound and systematic basis. In order to supply the information required a study was carried out by the Human Sciences Laboratory in which the work output and energy expenditures (in terms of oxygen consumption in litres/min) were measured on six highly trained Bantu mine workers under the following conditions: (a) rates of shovelling of 3, 4, 5, 6, and 10 shovels per minute. (b) loads of from 9 to 18 lb on the shovel. (c) distances of throw from 8 to 20 ft. (d) stope width of 28 in., 42 in. and 72 in. (e) dip of stopes of 0°, 15° and 30°. (f) rough and smooth footwalls and various grades of rock size. This paper gives the main results of practical importance of this study. Method The experiments were designed and conducted in conjunction with the Work Study Department of one certain underground conditions such as variable stope widths, stope angle, etc., were made available in a mine Surface Training School and suitable subjects were selected from the large number of labourers being put through the training school. Subjects Bantu recruits who had returned to the mine for a new contract and who had previous underground experience on shovelling were considered to be suitable as subjects for the experiments. The particulars of the subjects are given in Table I. After the technique was mastered, the men started shovelling rock and were trained for at least four hours per day to work at the higher shovelling rates. Training was continued for three weeks to enable the subjects to achieve a reasonable degree of physical training and conditioning. Shovelling method In both the kneeling and standing positions the subjects faced the pile of rock, grasped the shovel in the accepted manner and pushed the blade of the shovel into the base of the pile of rock, sliding the blade between the rock and the concrete floor. In the standing position (72 in. wide stope) the back leg assisted in the movement by pushing the knee against the back of the hand holding the shovel handle. SINCE the original formulation of fracture mechanics concepts,&apos;y2 relatively little work has related the fracture mechanics description of metal behavior on a gross, structural component scale to the behavior of its microstructural constituents. The purpose of this note is to suggest the utilization of fracture mechanics to describe material behavior on a microscopic scale. A Fracture Concept for Two-Phase Structures. A critical displacement concept considering the tough unidirectional phase in a relatively brittle matrix is first examined. It is assumed that a flaw exists at position 1 as depicted in Fig. 1. As the crack moves from position 1 to 2 the plastic zone could be of the shape described with the size approximated by the Dugdale3 model: where c is the half-crack length, OO is the applied stress, and oyS is the yield strength. Hahn and Rosen-field4 have presented a simple fracture criterion for homogeneous materials based upon the displacement at the crack tip. They also have shown the equivalence of the critical displacement, v*, to fracture toughness by Kc = (2v*oysE)1/2 [2] The displacement at the crack tip is given by and the displacement at any distance in front of the crack tip may be determined knowing the plastic zone size and utilizing the development of Goodier and Field.5 Recalling Fig. 1, the value of v* for fracture in material M1 may be calculated from Eq. [2] providing the critical stress intensity factor is known. As the material is loaded, when vc > vM1 the crack moves from position 1 to position 2 where it encounters the tough second phase. If vc2 < vm2, then the crack will be arrested providing the width of the M2 phase is sufficiently large. This condition is necessary since the displacement at position 2 has increased due to the longer crack length. Thus, the displacement at the distance X (representing the dimension of the second phase) in front of the crack may be larger than the critical displacement for failure in the brittle material. If v, > vm, then failure will proceed in the brittle material. The value of v, may be calculated as indicated above. This latter consideration is the same as predicting fracture of a brittle second phase at some distance in front of a crack located in a ductile matrix. Experimental Evidence. On a macrostructural scale, tungsten wires in a ductile Be-Cu matrix are seen to fracture well ahead of the main crack front in Fig. 2. Utilizing a Kc value of 14.2 ksi-in.1/2 obtained by Schroder et al.6 for as-received tungsten, the critical displacement 2v*, for fracture is calculated from Eq. [2] to be about 6.5 X 10-5 in. The crack tip displacement, 2vc, is calculated from Eq. [3] to be 0.0028 in. indicating that fracture would occur at a considerable distance in front of the crack tip. From the ratio of v*/vc and the plastic zone estimate of Eq. [I], the distance in front of the crack tip at which a tungsten wire should fracture is calculated to be about 0.195 in. As shown in Fig. 2, a fractured wire occurs at a distance of 0.140 in. (fractured in three places), not at 0.250

"INTRODUCTION Considerable interest was shown .prior to and during World War II in the winning of metallurgical-grade alumina from anorthosite, kaolin, siliceous bauxites, diasporic clays, and other aluminum-bearing ores. Laboratory and pilot-plant investigations were made on many of these ores by the Bureau of Mines, and a series of reports on them is being prepared. This report covers the tests made on the application of the lime-soda-sinter process to anorthosite, which is a mixture of albite, NaAlS1308, and anorthite, CaAl2Si208. Extensive deposits of anorthosite occur in the Laramie Range in Wyoming and extend into Colorado; other deposits are found in New York, with outcroppings appearing in Vermont, Maine, and Labrador.Anorthosito can not be treated by the Bayer process for the production of metallurgical-grade alumina, because excessive losses of soda and alumina occur from the formation of sodium-aluminum silicate due to the large amount (50 percent) of silica in the ore.RESULTS OF INVESTIGATIONSSmall-scale laboratory tests supplemented by pilot-plant runs have demonstrated that the alunina and soda occurring in the Wyoming anorthosite from the Laramie Range can be extracted and recovered satisfactorily by the lime-soda process. It has been shown that liquors containing approximately 95 gram of A1203 per liter can be consistently produced at Na20:A1203 ratios from 1.75 to 2.27, and that these liquors can readily be desilicated and carbonated to yield high-grade alumina trihydrate of quality comparable to that essential for cell-grade alumina. The optimum results were obtained with Na20:A1203 mol ratio of 1.03 and Ca0:Si02 ratio of 2.14 in the sinter when calcined at an average temperature of 2,444ºF. for 25 minutes."

"The authors conducted the in-situ gas-tightness tests in a fractured rock at the Namikata underground LPG storage site in Ehime prefecture, Japan. The test consisted of two independent setups, a gas-tightness test that used boreholes, and a chamber-scale test that used a horizontal drift sealed with a concrete plug. In each test, the gas pressure was increased up to the onset of the measurable gas flow to obtain the maximum containment pressure. This paper discusses the hydraulic conditions for gas leakage initiation and the importance of the pore pressure measurement for monitoring the gas-tightness of the LPG storage cavern based on the test results.INTRODUCTIONJapanese first underground LPG storage plant was constructed by JOGMEC, the Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation, at Namikata in Ehime prefecture in granitic rocks (Kato et al., 2007). The “hydraulic sealing principle” (Åberg, 1977) that utilizes groundwater flow into an unlined cavern to prevent the leakage of gas through fractures in the surrounding rock mass was employed for storage of LPG. This paper describes the results of the in-situ tests performed at the Namikata Site to obtain information on fundamental gas-tightness characteristics of fractured rock. Two types of in-situ tests, a borehole gas-tightness test and a chamber gas-tightness test, were carried out near the storage caverns. Figure 1 shows the cavern layout of the Namikata underground storage plant and the test locations. The storage facilities consist of three caverns (W26m×H30m×L485m). The cavern crown lies at a depth of 150m below the sea level in Cretaceous granitic rock (Figure 1). Water curtain boreholes excavated from the water gallery tunnel at EL-125m level are located above and side of the caverns to prevent water drainage from fractures during the construction stage as well as during operation. The borehole tests were performed from a drilling adit excavated from the eastern end water gallery tunnel, while the chamber test was conducted at the southern edge of an exploratory drift extending from the central water gallery tunnel."
