The Koidu Kimberlite Project is situated in the Kono District of Sierra Leone, approximately 330 km east of the capital city, Freetown. The mining lease area is 4 km2 and comprises 2 kimberlite pipes, 4 dyke zones and a number of blows off the dykes. Koidu Holdings established on the property and began dewatering and the removal of silt from the existing 30 m excavation of the No.1 Pipe in 2003. While the original planning for the pipes included conventional open pit operations, mitigating factors such as the proximity of the town, the presence of houses close to the perimeter of the pipe, the size of the pipe and the planned open pit depth with relevant stripping ratios, as well as uncertainties on the grades in respect of an underground operation, lent itself to the vertical pit concept. The vertical pit was established using an A-frame headgear for the hoisting arrangement, with sidewall support comprising a combination of 20 m and 40 m long cable anchors, rock bolts, wire mesh and pneumatically applied concrete. The pit reached steady state production in January 2007 and produced some 26,000 tonnes of head feed per month until August 2007 when mining reached a depth of 74 m below the pit collar (approximately 126 m below surface). Mining was suspended following a sidewall failure that disrupted operations. Now that the grades in No.1 Pipe have been validated, focus has been switched to an underground operation taking account of both No. 1 Pipe and No. 2 Pipe. While the mining costs for the vertical pit have been higher than for a conventional open pit, the concept did circumvent the social implications, the issue of grade consistency and diamond value at depth, as well as providing the time frame to carry out a full underground mining study.

During 1918, the activities of the United Engineering Society, the Library, the Engineering Foundation, and Engineering Council Were deeply affected by the war and much important war work Was done in our building. The endowment of Engineering Foundation was increased to $300,000 by an additional gift of $100,000 from Ambrose Swasey. By bequest of Dr. James Douglas, the American Institute of Mining Engineers received an endowment of $100,000, the income of which Will be expended in the maintenance of its library (now a part of the joint library). The Library Service Bureau has gained steadily; its business for 1918 amounted to nearly $10,000. Indexing of current engineering literature has been undertaken in conjunction With the Founder Societies and the Index is being printed in their publications. This service has been extended to the Engineering Institute of Canada and the Canadian Mining Institute. The expense is borne by the Societies. In this connection the American Society of Mechanical Engineers has purchased the Engineering Index heretofore published by "Industrial Management." In June the Westinghouse and General' Electric Co. donated to the United Engineering Society their Patent Con¬trol Library of about 8000 volumes. Other noteworthy gifts Were a collection of 370 pieces relating to patent litigations, from Jesse M. Smith, and Dr. William Paul Gerhard's collection on gas engineering, transferred by the American Gas Association.

The surface-to-inseam (SIS) directional drilling technique has been utilised at Oaky Creek Coal for more than a decade to predrain both the Oaky No 1 and Oaky North mining areas. The cumulative drilling program constitutes a total of 140 lateral and 200 vertical holes, and 405 km of lateral drilling.The use of SIS gas drainage has been successful with the following site-specific benefits being recognised:ability to drain German Creek seam gas contents to residual gas levels of new mining areas within an 18-month period from commencement of well productionstructural geological verification of the mine design well in advance of development mining occurring in an areaability to conduct successful predrainage of the overlying Aquila seam to reduce subsequent goaf emissions.Appropriate and up-to-date geological knowledge during the design and drilling process is a significant influence to achieving success. Vertical production wells need to be located in a position that is most effective to remove water from hole. The lateral hole should not include intersections with significant geological structure.SIS drilling provides continuous seam roof/floor data to help define seam geometry and locate geological hazards with high accuracy. In faulted ground and with variable seam gradients, SIS data can resolve geological ambiguities from seismic sections and enhance seam correlation that would otherwise be available only from discrete and closely-spaced infill vertical exploration drilling.Here, we review some examples of SIS configurations and practice to highlight key learnings in drilling long inseam holes (up to 1900 m per arm) ahead of development and mining. IN studying the kinetics of slag-metal reactions, it has become increasingly apparent that a complete knowledge of all aspects of interface phenomena will be required to clarify these processes adequately. A part of the data required for all oxidizing slags used in the refining of impure iron to steel is the rate of exchange of iron between the slag and metal phases. The simplest equilibrium of this type is that between liquid iron and iron silicate slag when both phases are equilibrated with the silica crucible containing them. In this study, the exchange of iron between the two liquid phases has been measured by using radioactive Fe as tracer. The observed high exchange rate indicates the ease with which such interfaces may be crossed in refining processes. The experiments required for this study involved relatively minor and normal modifications of well established techniques. Melting was accomplished by induction heating in heavy walled, fused silica, rotating crucibles." Rotation was used to minimize dilution of the slag by crucible erosion. The melting stock was ingot iron. Slags were prefused in iron crucibles using chemically pure grade oxide reagents. The special conditions applying to the active iron additions will be described for individual experiments. Suitable precautions were observed with regard to protection against radiation hazards.' Identification of Activity This particular study was initiated several years ago, but held in abeyance because the radioactive iron available at that time contained a foreign activity which concentrated in the slag so as to mask the iron activity and render the results unin-terpretable. With the benefit of experiences from other studies, radioiron of suitable purity can now be prepared. As received from the Isotope Div. of A.E.C., the unit appears to contain Fe + Fe50 and a high activity cobalt. The cobalt and iron are separated by repeated ether extractions, and the purified iron stored for sufficient time for the Fe'7 44 day half-life) to decay to negligible activity, leaving only Fe as the active isotope. This was confirmed by the absorption curves for slag and metal samples from heat No. 1. In Fig. 1 the experimentally measured points for the absorption curves of slag and metal are fitted by the calculated slope of 5.8 mg per sq cm in aluminum, which corresponds to the Mn K doublet emission resulting from the capture of an orbital electron of Fe" by the nucleus. This shows that the radioactive species are the same in both slag and metal and identifies it as Fe55 Description of Individual Heats For the first heat, the radioactive iron was contained in the prefused slag. The active Fe55 had been precipitated with carrier and was added as Fe2O3 during fusion in the iron crucible. The charge of 500 grams of ingot iron was melted, the protective iron sleeve added, rotation started, and a prefused, inactive slag was added to allow the system to approach equilibrium. After about 5 min at temperature, the wash slag was skimmed and the active slag added. Initial slag and metal samples were taken as soon as the slag was molten. Additional samples were taken at indicated intervals thereafter. Slag samples were dipped with a small iron spoon and metal samples were sucked into 1/4 in. ID silica tubes. The slag and metal samples were pulverized and mounted for radioactive counting. The slag samples were analyzed chemically for FeO. Temperature was read after the last slag sample by immersion of a Pt-Pt-Rh thermocouple protected by a fused silica sheath. Since no significant variation of rate with temperature was observed

Subaqueous water-rock reactions that occur at the pit wall/lake water interface can affect the pH of pit lakes. Many pit lake water chemistry models neglect subaqueous reactions, which may create inaccurate predictions over time. A mineral quantification method is presented that defines the wall rock mineralogy of active open pit mines, using samples collected from the Martha Mine, a low-sulfidation epithermal Au-Ag deposit in Waihi, New Zealand. The mineral quantification method has five components: field observations and sampling, X-ray diffraction analyses, selection of representative samples, geochemical analyses, and mineral accounting. Predicted mineral concentrations closely match observed mineral concentrations visually estimated using petrographic techniques. Results of the method can be incorporated into a geochemical model of long-range pit lake water quality resulting from subaqueous water-rock reactions.

"Discounted cash flow analysis provides a means of relating the magnitude of expected future cash profits to the magnitude of the initial cash investment required to purchase an asset or to develop it for commercial production. The objectives of discounted cash flow analysis are to determine:.. The net present value of a stream of expected future cash revenues and expenditures... The rate of return which the expected future cash flows will yield on a given level of initial cash investment.In the case of mineral properties, discounted cash flow analysis is generally accepted as the preferred method of valuation, whenever sufficient data are available to permit its reasoned application. Sufficient data are required to support estimation of all of the individual elements of cash revenue and cash expenditure which will be associated with the development and operation of the property, up to the end of its estimated life. It is the accuracy of these input estimates which determines the validity of the resulting determinations of profitability and rate of return on invested capital.In undertaking any discounted cash flow analysis, it is important to recognize certain fundamental attributes of the mining industty:.. The basis of any mineral development is the existence of an ore reserve... Costs are determined by the number of tonnes mined and processed, while revenues are determined by the number of pounds or ounces of metal produced. The two are related by the recovered grade of the ore... Profit is typically more sensitive to changes in revenue than it is to changes in cost... Commodity price is a principal determinant of revenue, but it is also the factor with which is associated the greatest level of financial risk.In the end, of all of the factors which must be considered in the discounted cash flow valuation of a mineral property, the most significant are the reliability of the reserve estimate, particularly with respect to recovered grade, the price at which the product is to be sold, and the risk of not maintaining the projected level of price."

Self-diffusion coefficients of silver in molten silver have been measured by means of the capillary-reservoir method in the temperature range 1002" to 1105°C. The results can be .represented by the equation D = (7.10 i 0.06) X 10-4 exp [(—8150 ± 1130)/RT]. The heat of activation agrees within the limit of experimental uncertainty with that for the viscous flow. The validity of the Eyring and the Stokes-Einstein equations are examined on the basis of the self-diffusion coefficients obtained and the known viscosity data of molten silver. MEASUREMENT of the self-diffusion coefficient of silver in molten silver was made in the temperature range 1275° to 1378°K, using the capillary-reservoir method and &"' as the radioactive tracer. The experimental arrangement is shown in Fig. 1. Silver of 99.99 pct purity (fine silver), was melted and degassed in vacuum in a graphite crucible situated inside a McDanel vacuum jacket. The crucible (4 in. tall and 1 in. ID) was protected both at the top and at the bottom with graphite shields and contained about 220 g of silver. The sample holder was a piece of graphite rod (1 in. long and 1/2 in. diam) with 4 capillaries drilled longitudinally into it. The holder was screwed onto a long graphite rod (12 in. long and 74 in. diam) which was connected to a steel disk hanging on a nylon string through a glass pulley. The steel disk kept the sample holder at the center of the McDanel tube and was heavy enough to overcome the buoyancy when the holder was lowered into the molten silver. By turning a handle connected to the pulley through a tapered glass joint, it was possible to raise or lower the sample holder without breaking the vacuum. Two such arrangements were constructed, sitting side by side in 2 Kanthal furnaces. One with non-radioactive silver in its crucible was used for the diffusion run and the other with radioactive silver in its crucible was used for filling the capillaries. To fill the capillaries with radioactive silver, the sample holder was degassed first and then lowered into the radioactive molten silver in vacuum. Purified argon gas was then admitted into the system to push the liquid silver into the capillaries. After cooling in argon, the filled capillaries were polished on emery paper to expose the top of the rod and used immediately as samples for the diffusion run which was carried out at the same temperature as that used for filling the capillaries. During the diffusion run, the samples were degassed in vacuum and lowered slowly into the nonradioactive molten silver before purified argon was admitted into the system. After a predetermined period of time, the samples were raised out of the melt and cooled in argon. The temperature of the melt was measured before and after the run with a chromel-alumel thermocouple inside a McDanel protection tube. Another chromel-alumel thermocouple attached to the outside wall of the McDanel vacuum jacket was used to indicate any fluctuation in the temperature of the furnace during the run, which was found to be less than ± 2°C for the longest run made (93 min). The temperature gradient inside the molten silver was found to be negligible. No significant difference was observed in the results obtained whether the melt was stagnant during the run or was stirred by raising and lowering the sample holder slowly a few times a minute for a distance of about 1/4 in. inside the melt.

The film you see is a slow motion view of a typical half million ton taconite blast at one of Erie's mines. This blast is made up of 220 drill holes and a total of 325 thousand pounds of blasting agent. The second view of the same shot is taken by a remote control hi speed camera located 1500' directly in front of the blast. Shortly you will see some violent camera movement as the air blast shock wave strikes the camera location. As the blasting sequence progresses the rock fly becomes evident, and if you will look closely amidst the clouds of smoke, rock fragments weighing up to 1/2 ton begin to cascade into view. These missles are the chief concern of blast security. The next camera shot at 4000 frames/second vividly describes the primacord firing lines detonating the blast. Travelling at 22,000 ft./sec., this white snake of fire travels to each hole, detonating the blasting agent. Before we get into the matter of blast security, let me locate our operation for those of you not acquainted with Minnesota's iron ranges and tell you something about our company.

THE iron-silicon alloy series has always been one of the most puzzling among the binary alloys. Examining the well known mechanical properties of the iron-rich alloys only we meet the following situation: The ultimate strength and yield point of alloys worked and annealed under the usual conditions represent nearly a straight line function of the silicon content up to 4.5 per cent. silicon (Fig. 1). Starting at the ultimate strength of 35,000 lb. and at a yield-point of 16,000 lb. for pure electrolytic iron, one reaches a -maximum strength of 93,000 lb. and a maximum yield point of 74,000 lb. at 4.5 per cent. silicon. This corresponds to an increase in ultimate strength by 13,000 lb. per each per cent. of silicon added and nearly the same rate applies to the yield point. The data mentioned are taken from the investigation by T. D. Yensen,1 and while they do not exactly corroborate the results obtained by earlier investigators, they seem to be the most correct. Plastic properties of the alloys are controlled by a much more complicated relationship. Up to 2.5 per cent. Si, the elongation stays close to 50 per cent. (in 2 in.) and the area reduction amounts to 85 per cent., a situation that forms the usual feature of all alloys representing strictly solid solutions. The plasticity of the latter is always nearly equal to that of their base metal. Beyond 2.5 per cent. silicon, the situation becomes much more complicated Yensen observed an enormous drop in elongation and area reduction at about 2.65 per. cent. silicon, where the first hardly reaches 10 per cent. and the second is still lower; he found, however, a considerable recovery in plasticity at about 2.8 per cent. Si and up to. 4.5 per cent. Si it is represented by 20 per cent. for the elongation and 30 per cent. for area reduction.

"IntroductionThe Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC) is constantly searching for new technologies that will enhance the marketability of its coal. One technology which shows promise in utilizing Cape Breton coal while at the same time addressing the traditional problem of high sulphur inherent in the Sydney coalfield, is coal-water fuel (CWF).The CWF process incorporates a physical change of coal by grinding it to a flour-like consistency and then mixing additives with it to make a fine coal slurry. The result is a liquid dispersion of fine coal particles that looks like oil, stores and flows like oil but burns like coal. The equipment used in the CWF process is standard mineral processing equipment but application of the equipment to manufacture a specific coal particle size and the specified additives used in the mixing make it a unique technology.The product, which CBDC calls Carbofuel, consists of 70% coal, 29.5% water and 0.5% chemical additives. The key properties of the product are: (I) high solids loading, (2) medium viscosity levels, (3) stability against sedimentation, and (4) good atomization behaviour. Carbofuel specifications are presented in Table I. Carbofuel ProductionThe production of Carbofuel is based on the controlled processing of coal. This involves wet grinding of the coal to a specified fine size (-250 um), cleaning this fine product to remove mineral impurities and formulating (with chemical additives) a finalproduct from the cleaned coal. The flow diagram in Figure 1 indicates the processing circuit for Carbofuel production.CBDC operates a 7-tonne-per-hour continuous production plant complete with state-of-the-art control, full laboratory services, product storage and loadout facilities. The plant has operated since 1983 and has produced over 12000 tonnes for several major demonstrations. The plant is shown in Figure 2."

The term "finite element analysis" is heard and seen in print a great deal these days; a few words on what precisely it is are in order. In the broadest sense, finite element analysis is an application of an idea developed by a nineteenth century mathematician named Rayleigh. His basic idea was to decompose any problem in mathematical physics into a large number of simpler problems, solve the simpler problems, and then put those solutions together to form an approximation to the solution of the original problem. The scheme works nicely because of two features: first, much of the difficulty in solving practical problems of mathematical physics stems from irregularities in the boundaries and the simpler problems can be chosen with regular boundaries and second the smaller problems are solved for small physical areas where simple approximations of the solution do not differ much from the true solution. In the narrower sense, in which we are now interested, finite element analysis is a technique of using imaginary simple structural elements to construct analytical models of real structures. A direct parallel with the Rayleigh approach exists since the "finite elements" have simple boundaries and are restricted to simple behavior within a single element. Although the correspondence between Rayleigh's ideas and finite element analysis is now widely recognized, the computational tool, as it has developed over the last thirty years, comes not from the discipline of physics but rather from that of structural engineering. This report presents statistical data on individual plants in the fuel- briquet and packaged-fuel industries circularized by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in its 1957 annual survey. This survey revealed that 17 briquet and 23 packaged-fuel plants were active part or throughout the year. The annual production capacity of the fuel-briquet industry was 3,088,000 net tons, a decrease of 17 percent from 1956. The decline in capacity was caused in part by the permanent retirement of 4 plants and also by the reduction in capacities of 4 other plants. The rate of production of briquet plants also decreased as the industry operated at 35.8 percent of capacity compared with 40.9 percent in 1956. Every operating plant in 1957 had an annual capacity exceeding 25,000 tons.

The Bureau of Mines performed a fragmentation experiment in cooperation with Duval Corporation in a porphyry copper-molybdenum deposit near the Sierrita pit south of Tucson, Ariz. This experiment evaluated the fragmentation created in a 10-hole test blast having blasthole spacings of 25, 20, and 15 feet. The 10 blastholes were 9 inches in diameter and contained a total of 17,400 pounds of aluminized slurry blasting agent in 50-foot columns with 60 feet of stemming. Diamond drill core examination was the primary method used to determine the condition of the rock before and after blasting. These core examinations included study of length recovery, rock quality designation (RQD), weight recovery, and size distribution. Topographic surveys were used to measure the rock swell produced by the blast and a fragment size distribution was obtained for the broken material on the surface. Fragmentation to depths of 110 feet was excellent from the 15-to 20-foot blasthole spacing patterns. Good breakage was also produced by the 25-foot pattern although the effects of the blast were not so obvious. In situ leaching tests were not conducted. However, based only on size consideration, all three blasting patterns produced adequate breakage for successful leaching.

The authors have proposed and discussed storage of low temperature materials such as LNG, LPG and frozen food in rock caverns. In this case, as the rock mass around the caverns will receive effects of low temperature, it is necessary to consider the thermal behavior and the stability of caverns. In this study, strength and deformation characteristics obtained by the uniaxial tension test and the compression test at low temperatures were discussed. Using the results, temperature and stress distribution around caverns when LNG was stored, were analyzed. Then thermal behavior of the rock mass around caverns was discussed. Over the past year or so, a number of mining companies have been meeting to examine the role of research in surface mining and, in particular, how to establish a collaborative research effort for the surface mining industry. A review has been completed which has identified the topics that are of interest to the surface mining companies for undertaking collaborative research. This has identified key subject areas such as Operations & Equipment; Maintenance; Environment & Reclamation; and Stability. Specific research projects for the initial research effort have been selected which include Wireless Data Communications, Analysis and Management; Application of GPS in Mining; and Tires for Heavy Haulers. In addition, attention has also been focussed on finding a suitable low cost, but effective, organization to coordinate and manage the collaborative research. The recently formed CONRAD Organization (Canadian Oilsands Network for Research and Development) appears to be a suitable candidate and discussions are ongoing with that group. This paper provides a summary of the review of surface mining research needs and of the status of the establishment of a collaborative research body for surface mining.

THE prospective change in ore receipts at the Copper Queen reduction works necessitated a careful study of conditions to determine the most economical method of smelting. The first step, calculating the known, probable, and possible results, showed the economy of a unimetallurgical flow sheet f which the three pyrometallurgical stages would be roasting, reverberatory smelting, and converting. The change to "all reverb." practice, therefore, called for considerable additional roaster capacity, which could be obtained either by building additional units, or by remodelling the present units so as to give increased unit capacity. In view of the progress in roasting practice since the construction of the Copper Queen roaster plant and the heavy investment in that roaster plant, the second plan seemed to be the more desirable. The Copper Queen roaster plant consisted of twenty six-hearth, McDougall roasters, 18 ft. in diameter, equipped with cast-iron arms that originally were water cooled but now are air cooled. They have no top dry hearth and the feed is discharged through the top arch, near its periphery, by plunger feeders from two bins at opposite sides of the roaster.

At one time explosives were the only economical means of rock tunnel excavation. Except in relatively long tunnels in the right rock explosives are still the cheapest means of rock excavation where they can be used. Today the most economical means of rock tunnel excavation is increasingly not the choice of the contractor. A good part of our work is for public agencies in urban areas and the public today is increasingly less tolerant of the disruption caused by our efforts. Owners in many cases have to direct their engineers to write specifications which severely restrict noise and vibration levels during construction. Sometimes specifications allow drill-and-shoot for starter tunnels only or even eliminate powder by fiat. Recent advances in the use of explosives such as sequential firing have made blasting more palatable to the public but are not enough in all situations. Thus the roadheaders on construction projects. In recent work I have seen the Alpine Miners, a Paurant Miner and the Robbins Mobile Miners used in several rock formations and now believe this type of equipment has a place in the tunnel constructor's choice of equipment. Rudy and I have not attempted to present a formula for choosing the best alternative excavation method in any given case because, of course, of the variables involved. We have simply tried to describe our experiences on a particular project and hope our observations will be of some value to tunnel constructors.
