"The waters of Lake Superior flow into those of Lake Huron through the St. Mary's river. The rapids in this river are about half a mile wide and three-quarters of a mile long, in which distance the fall amounts to about twenty feet. Since this was the only obstacle to navigation between the west end of Lake Superior and ports on any of the other Great Lakes except Ontario, attempts were made many years ago to permit the passage of small boats from Lake Huron to Lake Superior by means of canals and locks. The first canal was built on the Canadian side of the river by the Northwest Fur Company in 1797-98. The lock was 38 feet long, 8 feet 9 inches wide and had a lift of 9 feet. A tow path was made along the shores for oxen to track the bateaux and canoes through the upper part of the rapids., The lock was destroyed during the war of 1812 by United States troops from Mackinac Island.The first ship canal, known as the State Canal, was built on the American side of the river in 1853-55, about 750,000 acres of land in Michigan having been granted by congress to a private company as a 'concession for its construction. This canal was more than a mile long, 65 feet wide at the bottom and 100 feet wide at the water's surface. It had two locks, each 350 feet long by 70 feet wide, with a lift of about 9 feet. The depth of water in the canal was about 13 feet and in the locks about 11 1/2 feet."

The properties of crude petroleum continue to interest the Bureau of Mines and constitute an important phase of its major studies on the mineral resources of the United States. The Bureau's interest in the subject has been intensified by frequent requests for information on the characteristics of crude petroleum from various producing fields. Since its inception the Bureau of Mines has collected and analyzed samples of typical oils and at present has surveyed and classified crude petroleums from nearly all the known oil fields of the Western Hemisphere. Results of these surveys have been presented in various Bureau of Mines publications. (See bibliography, appendix A, p. 145.) The nature and comparative value of crude oils from various countries and the extent to which these oils may be considered potential competitors for markets are of manifest importance to the petroleum industry in all lands, largely because all crude oils, wherever produced, are either actual or potential competitors for a market with all other crude oils. The numerous discussions of foreign production of oil that have appeared in the technical press in the past indicate the great interest of the United States in this subject.

The Plate-Steckel mill combines the asset utilization of the strip rolling process with the grade and width range of the reversing plate mill, delivering a broad range of steel products at low cost. Among rolling mill types, plate mills are distinctive in the way that they exploit the metallurgical attributes of their product. The downside of this flexibility, though, is a low level of asset utilization. The Plate-Steckel mill was originally developed to combine the utilization of the strip mill and the width of the plate mill. The Plate-Steckel mill is now setting new benchmarks in accessible grades and applications, whilst pushing the width boundaries of the process. Long experience in the Steckel process control and coiler furnace design is coupled with caster and plate mill expertise to deliver high level of performance in this increasingly important plate and coil rolling technique. Several new design features have been incorporated and the vertical integration of mechanics with process models is the key for better product quality and flexibility at these plants. The use of fully automatic thermo-mechanical rolling using the latest physical models and intelligent sequencing strategies achieves the optimum grain refinement and thus improves mechanical properties. The novel profile and flatness strategy relies on comprehensive physical models and makes use of SmartCrown® as a powerful actuator, enabling large reductions to be taken without risking poor flatness. Throughout the rolling and cooling stages of processing, accurate calculation of the thermal-mechanical state of the product is performed by the temperature monitor. This enables tighter control of the final plate mechanical properties by providing an insight into the plate evolution during the thermo-mechanical processing. Advanced pacing functionalities provide an optimized mill throughput, utilizing new cooling bed charging strategies. Considering the rolling process, process automation applies state-of-the-art model calculations to achieve saleable coil/plate target dimensions even in non steady state rolling conditions.

Reduction roasting followed by magnetic separation is an important method for treating laterite nickel ores. In this work, garnierite type laterite ore from Yunnan province in China was reduced by methane under different conditions followed by magnetic separation to obtain the ferronickel concentrate. The phase and microstructure transformations of garnierite in the reduction process were investigated using XRD and SEM-EDS. The experimental results showed that reduction temperature from 873 to 1173 K had only a small effect on content and recovery of nickel and iron. The content and recovery of nickel and iron in the concentrates increased slightly with prolonging reduction time. In addition, the nickel and iron content decreased with increasing methane concentration, but the recovery of nickel and iron increases. A decrease in the iron content and recovery were observed when the dosage of sodium sulfate varied from 5 to 20% at a temperature of 1073 K and reducing time of 90 min, while the nickel content and recovery gradually increased.

MORE and more attention is being paid to the bonding of metals in their solid states. For a better understanding of this technique for joining metals and how it is affected by changes in temperature, pressure, and time at temperature and pressure, a detailed report concerning nickel to aluminum bonding has been published.' In order to broaden the knowledge accrued, some additional work concerning solid state joining of aluminum to copper and aluminum to zirconium was performed. The investigation of the Al-Cu system was considerably more extensive than the investigation of the Al-Zr system. For the A1-Cu system, not only were tensile sudies made but intermetallic penetration rate investigations also were carried out. The effect of temperature on intermetallic penetration rate for the A1-Cu system was determined at 11 tsi pressure, held 2 min. Procedure Apparatus: The hot pressing technique was the means of solid state reaction used and required the equipment depicted in Fig. 1. The following procedure was involved: The two metals to be reacted were placed in an aquadag-lubricated 18-4-1 tool steel die, 16 in. high by 1.440 in. ID, between punches of 1.366 in. diam made of the same material. A thermocouple well was located in the die body 3½ in. down from the top of the die, while another well was located centrally in the bottom punch 8½ in. from the bottom of the die. This die assembly was located in three cylindrical ceramic heating furnaces placed in tandem. Each furnace was controlled individually by a Variac power transformer. In turn, the die and furnaces were placed in a water-cooled stainless steel pot which could be evacuated. A cover, which contained a centrally located Wilson seal with an 18-4-1 1 in. diam ram running through it, was bolted on the pot. After sealing, the pot was evacuated by a roughing pump to 200 microns pressure, after which a diffusion pump was used to bring the pressure down to 5 to 15 u. At this pressure, the furnaces were turned on. As soon as they started to heat, out-gassing of the entire unit raised the pressure to 30 to 400 p. By the time the specimens were at temperature ready to be pressed, approximately 4/2 hr, the vacuum pumps had re-established the 5 to 15 u pressure. Once the desired temperature was reached, the required pressure was applied for a predetermined length of time to the 1 in. ram, through to the top punch, and to the specimen. When the time for keeping the specimen under pressure had elapsed, the pressure was released, the energizing coil current turned off, and the assembly allowed to cool. After cooling, the die was removed from the pot and the specimen was ejected. Specimen Preparation: Two different types of specimens were made for this investigation. One was for subsequent tensile testing, while the other was for determination of intermetallic alloy zone penetration into the parent metals. Tensile Bars—Commercially rolled copper pieces in. thick or zirconium sheet pieces 1/32 in. thick and 1.366 in. diam were placed between commercial 2-S aluminum rod 1 in. thick and 1.366 in. diam. This sandwich in turn was slipped into a 2-S aluminum sleeve 1.438 in. OD and 1.370 in. ID. This sleeve lined the couple up and prevented the aquadag lubricant from getting in between either the A1-Cu or Al-Zr interfaces. Immediately prior to the specimen assembly, the copper or zirconium was abraded on the flat surfaces with 320 grit silicon carbide paper, producing clean smooth surfaces. The aluminum was chemically cleaned just before assembly by: l—degrease in acetone, 2—distilled water rinse, 3—immersion for 3 min in 5 pct NaOH at 70" to 80°C, 4—distilled water rinse, 5—immersion for 2 min in 50 pct HNO3 solution at room temperature, 6—distilled water rinse, and 7—drying in a blast of gas. After the A1-Cu sandwiches were hot pressed and ejected, the specimens were machined such that the aluminum sleeve was removed, and the remaining aluminum was then threaded; the bar so produced was tested later for tensile strength. In all the instances where Al-Cu couples were tested, the specimens broke during the test at the Cu-A1 interface and never within the aluminum or copper. The ultimate tensile strength values at times showed considerable scatter for a set of given reaction conditions. Because of this, as many as three to five specimens were made for a particular set of conditions. The trend of the average tensile strengths obtained was not as conclusive as was the trend of the maximum tensile strengths, the latter values being obtained under optimum reaction conditions. Therefore, the values of ultimate tensile strength given herein are maximums.

"At present scenario, there has been an increasing demand in the usage of blend coal in power sector; regardless of how, specific knowledge on burning and ignition characteristics and their interactive effects is stingy. In this work a detailed investigation was therefore taken up to study in detail the combustion characteristics of selected coal samples and their blends. Certain parameters were believed to have significant effects on combustion characteristics of individual coal and their blend. Major parameters identified for this purpose included proximate analysis, combustion conditions, heating rate, reaction regions, blending ratios, ignition condition, reactivity (or reaction rate) and burnout temperatures. With the help of these parameters, thermal features and reaction kinetics of the individual and blended samples were investigated through a qualitative and quantitative thermo-gravimetric analysis of two different individual coals and their blend carried out in an oxygen atmosphere from ambient to 800 0C at a constant heating rate of 10 K/min. A significant difference in terms of rate of mass loss with temperature correlated from Arrhenius expression along with coal-coal blend interactions and deviation from their expected behaviour, have been observed between the kinetics of individual and blend samples, the latter showing better ignition performance and comprehensive combustion phase. It was also found that particles having the lowest percentages of volatile matter and ash could possibly be blended with particles having high ash and volatile matter to meet the required burning condition which can be effective in terms of cost savings, improved fuel economy, reduced undesirable exhaust emissions and improved safety of coal burning equipment. Experimental results further indicated that individual samples and coal blend samples have different combustion features in terms of residue left, peak temperatures and activation energies. Thermodynamic activation parameters such as activation energy, pre-exponential factor and order of reaction were computed from the thermal data using the modified form of non-isothermal methods. INTRODUCTION Coal has been the most significant source of energy for India and would remain so at least for the next few decades. About 60-65% of the electricity produced in India is from coal fired power plants. Indian coal is of drift origin and of high ash content. Ash content of the coal burnt in power plants in India is in the range of 30-45%, most of it being Run-of-Mine coal. Most of the power plants in India source their coal from number of mines, most common being multiple sourcing. Usually coal from each source [1] is burnt separately. For various reasons mostly associated with logistics, burning of blended coal is rarely practiced. Blending of coal is practised mainly for improving the quality of available coal and meets the shortage of coal supply. Blending technique is generally practised in power industries to reduce the cost of power generation along with mitigating combustion performance or slagging problem ensuring consistency in as fired coal quality and also for environmental compliance. Blending good quality imported coal can improve coal quality and helps in preserving indigenous coal resources for longer period [2]. Use of blended coal shall reduce load on all boiler components (Mill, CHP, Boiler, AHP) & reduce O&M cost and increase the availability. The main purpose of blending is to get a blended as fired coal having ash, volatile matter and gross calorific value close to design coal and the two coals are to be blended in such ratio proportions that resultant coal blend have desired ash, volatile matter and gross calorific value [3]. For a coal to be blended certain parameters have to be considered to get compatibility with respect to combustibility ( Burn ability) of coal, grindability ( HGI), ash fusion behavior, swelling characteristics of coal, need to be checked"

In earlier gears, the custom prevailed of regarding the anthracite basins as cases of folding with slight development of faulting. Folding is so pronounced and, in the eastern and western Middle Fields, at times so violent, that the inference was a natural one and led to the widespread impression that practically all the disturbances of the seams could be explained in this way. The cross-sections and maps prepared forty or more years ago for the Second Geological Survey of P ennsylvania, by Mr. Ashburner under Prof. J. P. Lesley, exhibit little else than folds.' So far as I can discover faults fail in the charts, except in one small case in the Henry colliery near Plainsville on the outskirts of Wilkes-Barre. Some years ago, while spending a day or two in Wilkes-Barr, under the guidance of R. V. Norris, I looked over some recent and accurate cross-sections of a numbcr of the large collieries and was deeply impressed with the peculiar behavior of some of the seams and the intervening shales. Thus, a seam might present a small, more or less overturned fold, rising 30 to 50 ft. (9 to 15m.) above its general course, and yet the movement would be taken up in the overlying shales, so as hardly to be noticeable in the seams next above or below. These and similar anomalies, especially when shown with the accuracy of engineer's surveys, possess great scientific and practical interest, bearing as they do, not alone on coal mining, but on theoretical geology and the actual behavior of strata under great compressive stresses. In preparation for the semicentennial meeting of the Institute, an effort was therefore made to secure some of the most interesting sections for presentation to the members. The collection of illustrations here shown is mainly due to Douglas Bunting of the local committee, to whom and to the contributing companies acknowledgments are due. "One of the contributing factors to the extreme cost escalation in the first decade of the 21st century was the increase in the amount and cost of engineering work that went into studies and projects. Various reasons for this were identified, including unsatisfactory productivity due to a shortage of experienced/qualified engineers, the increased complexity and infrastructure requirements of many projects due to location, metallurgy that is more challenging and increasing environmental and social requirements. These conditions often led to unsatisfactory project results in terms of cost and schedule blowouts and created a loss of confidence – both internally and externally – in the industry’s ability to complete projects on time and on budget.Technical fundamentals aside, the experience and effectiveness of project teams has had, and continues to have, a major impact on project cost, schedule and ramp-up to nameplate capacity and operating parameters. There are unfortunately too many examples of where project teams have not been as effective as they could or should have been, all to the ultimate detriment of the project.Using the authors’ extensive experience on both owner’s and engineer’s teams, this paper discusses some of the main reasons for suboptimal team, and hence project, performance and offers thoughts on how best to build and maintain project teams. The analysis and conclusions drawn are built around the Tuckman model of group development known as ‘forming-storming-norming-performing’, which was first proposed some 50 years ago. FOR many years the Homestake Mining Co. has devoted serious attention to the elimination of accidents, and ground is steadily being gained in this direction. In accident prevention work it is line-plunging with perfect teamwork and not the spectacular forward pass that brings progress toward the goal. In both surface plants and under- ground workings we regard "good housekeeping" as a first requisite for safety as well as efficiency. Under this term are included all types of safety guards and protective devices as well as cleanliness and orderliness it working places. Perhaps the most important factor in safety work is to arouse and maintain employee interest. The general morale and contentment of employees is of particular importance.

The average quantity of heat needed to refine a barrel of crude oil in 1934 was 638,000 B.t.u., or about as much heat energy as contained in 5 gallons of fuel.oil. Although the total heat utilized in 1934 was slightly above 1933, crude runs to stills increased 4 percent, hence the average requirement per barrel declined from 660,000 B.t.u. in 1933 to 638,000 B.t.u. in 1934 (see fig. 1). The average for 1934 constitutes a new record for firing efficiency, being just under the previous low of 1929. Heat consumption at refineries depends on many factors, of which the trends in yields of gasoline and lubricating oils are probably most important. The yield of gasoline is indicative of activity at cracking plants, which typo of plant utilizes more thou the average amount of heat per gallon of product. The yield of lubricating oils is indicative of the extent to which crude oil is refined; that is, it takes considerably more heat to refine a barrel of crude through lubricating oils than it does to separate only gasoline and kerosene. The yield of gasoline decreased from 43.7 percent in 1933 to 43.4 percent in 1934; on the other hand, the yield of gas oil and fuel oil increased. Although the yield of lubricating oils increased slightly in 1934 the theoretical increase in fuel requirements probably was offset by technical improvements, such as solvent refining. Although no outstanding technical developments of a fuel-saving nature were made in 1934, some progress undoubtedly was recorded. Heat exchangers, an effective fuel-saving device, wore enlarged, and some refiners now take off several cuts before the crude reaches the pipe stills. The total capacity of pipe stills increased 2.5 percent in 1934, and many of the less efficient shell stills were torn out.

Drive stability is critical in block/panel cave mining. The production levels of these mines are required to remain operational for the entire life-of-mine which can be in excess of 30 years. It is therefore necessary to produce high-quality drives to ensure sustainable mine productivity. In order to improve the quality of drives and pillars, this gold mine instigated a project to optimise their development blasting. The initial aim was to reduce the level of overbreak in development mining, which was averaging approximately 18 per cent. The benefits of controlling overbreak not only included an increase in the integrity of the drives but also a decrease in load and haul and ground support costs. Through focusing on the optimal blasting of the perimeter holes, overbreak was reduced to 4.5 per cent. The project’s focus then moved to drill and charge designs for development faces. In optimising these designs, it was anticipated that improvements in the development mining cycle would be achievable.CITATION:Klaric, P, 2015. A quantitative analysis method based on the airflow influence factors is proposed to evaluate airflow stability and discriminate airflow directions in complex ventilation networks. The law governing the changes in airflow caused by changes in branch resistance is revealed based on simulations of the airflow state in a ventilation network and a statistical analysis of the results. Then, three evaluation indices (airflow sensitivity, airflow influence factor, and critical airflow) are determined, matrices of the airflow influence factors and critical airflows are constructed, and a quantitative evaluation method for ventilation system stability and an airflow directional discriminant are proposed. The results show that the stability of a ventilation system can be reliably evaluated based on the airflow influence factors. The sensitive branches and dominant branches in the ventilation network can be determined based on the matrix of airflow influence factors, and the reversed branches, the trigger branches, and the reversal conditions can be determined based on the critical airflow matrix and the matrix of airflow influence factors. The proposed airflow directional discriminant is suitable for evaluating arbitrarily complex networks.

The adsorption patterns of potassium amylxanthate on the surface of high purity malachite subjected to prior sulfidization with NaSH have been followed and elucidated. DRIFTS spectroscopy has been used to trace the associated physicochemical alterations as well as the chemical species present on the mineral surface. Varying the collector concentration from 5.10-4 to 1.10-2 mol/L has led to different degree of surface coverage of the alkyl groups and to formation of organometallic hydrophobic complexes of CuX or CuX - X2 type. The results reveal that the CuX complex formed on the malachite surface without sulfidizing agent is more unstable and prone to dissolution-precipitation phenomena. Based upon the constructed adsorption isotherms and upon the degree of statistical coverage, different zones of mineral-reagent interactions could be distinguished. They correspond respectively to the monolayer, bi-layer and tridimensional condensation domains. In each of the identified zones mono or double layer adsorption patterns of the collector are proposed leading respectively to formation of surface compounds with different degree of hydrophobicity. The results suggest that sulfidisation remains an important prerequisite in view achieving efficient flotation of the malachite from the studied copper ore.

"A 10-cm thick clay-rich layer near the top of the Manitou Falls Formation of the Athabasca Group is unusual in its breccia texture, alteration, and detrital mineral composition relative to the adjacent overlying and underlying sedimentary beds. This layer is composed of angular quartz grains set in an illite >> kaolinite + dickite matrix. Deformed clay-rich fragments within the layer have very similar mineral assemblages. The presence of euhedral accessory minerals including Ti-oxides and aluminophosphatesulphate minerals points to a diagenetic/hydrothermal origin. The presence of individual grains of Kfeldspar and amphibole is unusual relative to the typical Athabasca quartz arenite; originally, these minerals were probably included in detrital quartz and subsequently liberated during fracturing. The textures and alteration characteristics suggest that this layer is a hydraulically-fractured unit, which has experienced hydrothermal fluid alteration - a possible pathway distally related to uranium mineralization Une couche argileuse de 10 cm d’epaisseur pres du sommet de la Formation de Manitou Falls du Groupe d'Athabasca est remarquable par sa texture brechique, son alteration et la composition de ses mineraux detritiques qui different de ceux des couches sedimentaires sus- et sous-jacente. Cette couche est composee de grains de quartz angulaires dans une matrice composee d’illite >> kaolinite + dickite. Des fragments deformes riches en argile dans cette couche presentent des assemblages mineraux tres similaires. La presence de mineraux accessoires idiomorphes dont des oxydes de titane et des aluminophosphates-sulphates suggere que ces derniers ont une origine diagenetique / hydrothermale. La presence de grains de feldspath-K et d'amphibole est inhabituelle comparativement aux arenites quartziques typiques de l’Athabasca; initialement, ces mineraux constituaient probablement des inclusions dans le quartz detritique qui ont ete subsequemment liberees pendant la fracturation. Les textures et les caracteristiques de l'alteration suggerent que cette unite a subi une fracturation hydraulique et a ete alteree par un fluide hydrothermal - possiblement en lien avec les effets distaux de mise en place de la mineralisation en l'uranium."

"IntroductionThe Kitsault molybdenum mine is located 600 m above sea level on Lime Creek at the head of the inlet of Alice Arm, 140 km northeast of Prince Rupert, British Columbia (Fig. 1). The area of the mine is characterized by rugged topography and deeply incised creeks which drain into the Portland Canal - Observatory Inlet fjord system. Access is by air service or boat from Prince Rupert, or by secondary road from Terrace.HistoryThe deposit was first staked in 1911, at which time the main feature of interest was a polymetallic vein with values in silver located southeast of the molybdenum deposit (Woodcock and Carter, 1976). Turnbull (1916) was the first to describe the extensive zone of crisscross quartz stringers with Mo~ on the banks of Lime Creek which, although it clearly had the potential to contain a major deposit, was not then believed to be of commercial value.Following sporadic work through the 1920s and early 1930s, the ground lay idle unti11959 when Kennco Explorations (Western) Ltd. commenced a program of systematic diamond drilling on the stockwork-type mineralization adjacent to Lime Creek. In late 1964, Kennco announced the presence of an orebody of 36 million tonnes averaging 0.230Jo Mo~ which was to be put into production at a rate of 5450 tonnes per day under a new subsidiary, British Columbia Molybdenum Ltd., at a forecasted capital cost of $20 million (revised to $30 million).Between January 1968 and April 1972, 10.4 million kg of molybdenum were produced from 9.3 million tonnes of ore, at an average mill recovery of 90%, and with an average mill head grade of 0.206% Mo~. The ore was mined in an open pit with a waste to ore stip ratio of 1.5 to 1. The. operation was terminated in 1972 due to weak molybdenum prices and escalating costs.In May 1973, the deposit was purchased by Climax Molybdenum Corporation of British Columbia, Limited and in 1979 transferred to affiliate Amax of Canada Limited. In early 1979, following completion of detailed feasibility studies, Arnax commenced construction of the 10 900 tonne per day Kitsault mine and mill complex based on a mineable open pit reserve of 95 million tonnes at an average grade of 0.192% Mo~, sufficient for a mine life of 25 years. The original capital cost estimate was $143 million; it subsequently escalated to approximately $200 million."

Wastewater from nickel lateritic process still has valuable metals that could be recovered. Using an ion exchange to recovery these metals, the iron becomes a problem due to the fact that it precipitate at pH 2. The aim of this research was to make iron soluble by reducing Fe+3 to Fe+2. A synthetic solution was prepared with sulfate ferric. The reducing agent sodium dithionite was used and the potential was varied (initial potential: 700, 600, 500, 450 e 400 mV) using as a reference the Pourbaix diagram for iron created by HydroMedusa software. The pH was ranged between 0.5 and 2.5, the reducing agent’s concentration was 0.5 M and the reaction time ranged between 30 and 120 min at room temperature. The ferric iron and total iron concentration were verified using a spectrophotometer with 5-sulfosalicylic acid (SSA) to determine Fe(III) and ammonia to determine Fe(II) and Fe(III) in 500 and 425 nm, respectively. The results indicated that total reduction was at 400 mV in any pH between 0.5 and 2, but less than 40% in pH 2.5 at this potential value.

An important goal in the development of coal mining explosives has been to improve their safety characteristics through suitable formulation. In the United States no systematic effort to establish factors influencing the incendivity to firedamp and to coal dust of explosives through research was made until the last decade. In consequence, American permissible explosives underwent only very slight modifications and many remained substantially the same as in the early years. As part of a long range program for increasing the safety of permissible explosives, the Bureau of Mines undertook to determine how the amounts and particle sizes of the principal constituents of these explosives affect their incendivity. It was found that an increase in the relative amount of sodium chloride and a decrease in its particle size significantly decreased the incendivity of our permissible explosives to firedamp (7-9).6 This is in agreement with findings reported by Dolan (4) for compositions of nitroglycerin and salt. One important result of the work at the Bruceton station has been the recent introduction of salt-formulated permissibles by several explosives manufacturers. This paper describes a statistically designed experiment for studying the effects of the particle size of ammonium nitrate and the type of carbonaceous materials used on the incendivity of permissible explosives. Interest in these particular effects goes back as far as the first formulations of coal mine explosives, around 1910 in the United States and even earlier in Great Britain and other countries. The report of work accomplished on the United States Bureau of Mines' bauxite project in Pulaski and Saline Counties, Ark., is presented in this volume and in a series of Reports of Investigations immediately following this volume. This first volume covers the project as a whole, whereas the subsequent volumes contain maps of local areas and deposits developed, together with logs of the drill holes and descriptions of the separate deposits. The Arkansas bauxite project was initiated in December 1941 and continued for 4 years. The first 5 months were spent in studying the problems presented and in geophysical exploration, Core drilling began in May 1942 and ended in May 1945. The project was one of the larger and more important of those undertaken by the Bureau of Mines for the purpose of developing domestic sources of supply of critical and strategic minerals necessary for National defense and for the successful waging of modern mechanized warfare. Some of the results of the Bureau's bauxite exploratory work have been made available to the public through the medium of press releases, transactions of technical societies, and government publications. More information has been supplied to government agencies upon request and to land owners and mine operators of the deposits concerned in the form of maps showing locations of all holes drilled on the property and logs with chemical analyses of' all cores recovered. In October 1946, the factual data were made avail-able to .the public in manuscript form in an-"open file" at the office of the State geologist, R. B. Foxhall, Little Rock, Ark., and at the office of the. Bureau of Mines in Washington. For the purpose of providing a background for the presentation of the factual data obtained, the history of bauxite is reviewed briefly. Information relative to past production and reserves of bauxite in Arkansas also is given. A resume of the development of the industry in Arkansas, the exploration and mining methods employed, the various uses to which the bauxite is put, and a brief outline of the geology of bauxite in Arkansas complete the -background.

Rare earths were not mined in the United States in 2008. However, processing of intermediate rare-earth concentrates continued throughout the year at the Mountain Pass Mine in California. Consumption of refined rare-earth products increased. U.S. rare earth imports were primarily from China, with lesser amounts, in decreasing order, from France, Hong Kong, Japan, Austria and Russia. The United States imported 100 percent of its supply of yttrium metal and compounds primarily from China. United States In 2008, lanthanide concentrates were processed by Chevron Mining Inc. (previously Molycorp Inc.) at its mine site at Mountain Pass, CA. Chevron Mining sold its entire holdings in the rare earths mine to Molycorp Minerals LLC in September and operations continued at the site through-out 2008. Major uses for these mineral commodities were in automotive catalytic converters, petroleum fl uid-cracking catalysts, permanent magnets, glass-polishing compounds, ceramics, metal-alloying additives, phosphors and recharge-able batteries. Three domestic companies produced and sold lanthanide intermediate concentrates and refined products. Chevron Mining sold its interests in the Mountain Pass Mine to Molycorp Minerals LLC on Sept. 30, 2008. Molycorp Minerals LLC is an investment company owned by Resource Capital Fund IV L.P., Pegasus Partners IV, LP, The Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Traxys North America LLC, Carint Group LLC and Mark Smith. The Molycorp operation previously mined the rare earth fluocarbonate mineral bastnäsite by hard-rock surface methods, and the mine remained on care and maintenance in 2008. Molycorp maintained significant stocks of bastnäsite concentrates, intermediate concentrates and high-purity rare earth compounds at its operations at Mountain Pass. In October 2007, Chevron Minerals completed phase one of its three-stage plan and restarted the rare earth separation plant at Mountain Pass. The company also processed intermediate rare earth concentrates from existing stocks during the first three quarters of 2008. Molycorp Minerals LLC maintained production in the last quarter of the year. The mine at Mountain Pass has been closed since 1998. Future plans are to restart processing of stockpiled bastnäsite concentrates followed by reopening of the mine.

The effect of loam on the permeability of porous media to water was studied as a {unction of foaming agent concentration, specific permeability, pressure gradient, length of a porous medium and its oil saturation. At a given fluid saturation in a porous medium, the permeability to water was found to be the same whether loam was present or not. Foam decreases the permeability to water by developing a higher trapped gas saturation than that obtained by water flooding without loam present, increasing the concentration of foaming agent increased the trapped gas saturation and thereby decreased the permeability to water. The presence of oil reduced the capability of most foaming agents to decrease the permeability of a porous medium to water. A few surfactants were found to be effective loaming agents even in the presence of oil. These results are similar to those reported in a previous paper on the effect of loam on the permeability of porous media to gas. The effect of loam was found to persist in long porous media at moderately high reservoir temperatures and during the passage of many pore volumes of surfactant-free water. INTRODUCTION This paper describes part of a study on a novel approach in the use of surfactants for oil recovery; the use of foam rather than water to displace oil. Previously it was found that foam can displace oil which normally is not displaced by water.4 The foam is formed by successively injecting a suitable surfactant solution and gas into a porous medium. Foam appears to have at least two uses in the field: (1) it shows promise as a superior oil recovery agent, and (2) it shows promise as a selective permeability reducing agent. Foam may be very useful in water floods, or in other oil recovery processes, where highly permeable streaks or unfavorable mobility ratios are a problem. A previous paper reported the effect of foam on the permeability of porous media to gas.1 In the present study the effect of foam on the permeability of porous media to water is reported. The specific objectives of the study were to determine: (1) the effect of foam on the permeability to water in porous media of various specific permeabilities, (2) the effect of foam on the permeability to water in the presence of oil, (3) the effect of foam and crude oil on the trapped gas saturation, (4) the effect of foam on permeability to water at trapped gas saturation, (5) the effect of pressure gradient on the permeability to water under foaming conditions, (6) the persistence of foam during the passage of surfactant-free water through the porous medium, and (7) the effect of various foaming agents, length of the porous medium and temperature on the permeability reduction caused by foam. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS The experimental apparatus consisted of consolidated and unco n soli dated porous media, wet test meters and constant delivery pumps. The porous media consisted of consolidated sandstone cores (6 to 36 in. long), and unconsolidated sand packs (3 to 30 ft long). The consolidated cores had permeabilities of 32 and 1,000 md and porosities of about 20 per cent. The sand packs had permeabilities of 3,500 to 211,000 md and porosities of about 40 per cent. (Throughout this report a term such as 100 md sand" is used. This term means that the porous medium had a dry, nitrogen permeability of 100 md.) Fluids used in the experiments were distilled water, 1 per cent NaCl solution, aqueous solutions of foaming agents, nitrogen gas, air and crude oil.
