The Bureau of Mines has conducted field studies in coal mines through- out the United States to determine the effectiveness of electromagnetic techniques in locating miners trapped underground following a mine accident. Data from these tests have been used to generate models of expected signal and noise distributions as found above mines throughout the coalfields. These distributions have aided in placing the expected performance of a through-the-earth electromagnetic communications technique into a probabilistic framework. Results show that at a 10-pct false alarm rate, the expected probability of detecting a miner's signal from a depth of 1,000 ft is 54 pct; at 500 ft it is 95 pct. These depths exceed the actual depths of 90 pct and 50 pct, respectively, of U.S. coal mines. Sensitivity studies have shown that at a depth of 1,000 ft, for every 3 db of improvement in signal-to-noise ratio, the probability of detection increases 6 to 8 pct.

At then end of this year will be 10 years of producing concentrate for Antamina. This is a summary of what occurred over the last decade to increase production and tonnage above the design tonnage of 70,000 tonnes per day, up to an average of 100,018 tonnes per day in 2010, an increase in production of 42.9%. Equipment currently in use is the originally installed equipment, signifying a meaningful increase in capacity without capital. In this paper, the different phases of improvements and the realization of their impacts in chronological order will be outlined. Figure 1 below shows the average daily tonnage processed each year (tonnage throughput each year/calendar days), as well as the percentage increase over the tonnage of design.

The National Safety Competition was inaugurated in 1925 by the Bureau o1 Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, in cooperation With the Explosives Engineer. In the first nationwide contest, 210 mines and quarries were enrolled. In 1962, the thirty-eighth anniversary of the competition, 910 mines and quarries were enrolled. These participating plants were worked a total of 133,292,989 man-hours. Of the enrolled plants, 415 achieved injury-free operations tar the year, the largest number of perfect safety records in the history of the contest. In 1961 and 1962, the National Safety Competition was conducted and sponsored by the Bureau of Mines. In January 1963, the American Mining Congress became a cosponsor and participated with the Bureau in the award activities related to the 1962 contest. The basic purpose of the competition is to stimulate employees to work safely and too give impetus to the building of better accident-prevention programs. A well-designed and efficient safety program helps a company economically by cutting costs, preventing damage to equipment and materials, and reducing nonproductive delays. An effective safety program benefits the employee more directly because his injuries cause personal suffering, lost time, and lower living standards for his family. Since both have much to gain, management and workers should cooperate closely to eliminate disabling work injuries. The greater contest participation and the larger number of perfect safety records indicate increasing safety consciousness on the part of management and employees.

THE ever increasing array of information concerning the measurement of the effect of the welding process on the properties of a steel is an indication of the tremendous effort that is being expended in this field. The methods that have been considered may be divided into two groups: first, those that measure directly the effect of welding on the ductility of a steel, and, second, those that observe the change in some property, such as the hardness of the heat-affected zone, and assume a direct correlation between this change and the resultant ductility. The nick-bend test is a direct method designed for studying the effect of welding on the ductility of a steel. The test specimen (Fig. I) consists of a bar cut from a plate with a bead weld on the surface. The specimen is prepared with a saw-notch placed so as to restrict deformation to the heat-affected zone under the bead weld when tested as a static bend. Failure is caused by rupture of the low-ductility metal in the heat-affected zone. The angle at maximum load is used as an index of the effect of the welding process on the material. In the development of the nick-bend test considerable scatter was noted in some of the results, although the agreement of duplicate specimens welded at the same time and tested consecutively was excellent. Upon further investigation it was found that the change in ductility was dependent upon the interval of time between the welding operation and the testing of the specimen. For the six steels of Fig. a, the angle at maximum load in four cases was doubled and in one case was tripled. All steels that have been studied show an improvement in the angle of bend for longer intervals between welding and testing. A survey of previous underground mine fires revealed a number of reported fires may have been caused by malfunctioning stationary electrical equipment. Therefore, an evaluation of conventional fire protection systems was conducted to determine their usefulness in the protection of this equipment. To simplify the problem and facilitate the handling of data, the under-ground mine was divided into nine work areas. Representative combustibles and associated hazards characteristic of each area were identified. Conventionally available fire protection systems were then examined and evaluated to determine engineering and cost feasibility, effectiveness and reliability for the development of fire protection guidelines which could be used within the nine areas of interest.

"INTRODUCTION This is the second report of investigations describing tests in full-scale commercial heats of steel-using electrolytic manganese having a purity of about 99.95 percent, produced in the Bureau's pilot plant at Boulder City, Nev. The first report dealt with tests in cooperation with two companies can the use,of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of stainless steel. 3/ Plans aril cost estimates for reasonably large commercial, electrolytic plants based upon pilot-plant experience, as well as the comments of a number of concerns where electrolytic manganese has been tried, are contained in another publication.4/ The tests in cooperation with industry are part of the Bureau of Mines program of investigations of methods of utilizing low-grade domestic manganese ores, thereby the United States leas dependent upon foreign sources of manganese for metallurgical use. The Boulder City pilot plant already has demonstrated the feasibility of producing electrolytic manganese from several of the most important reserves of low-grade manganese ore. As the ferromanganese normally used by the steel industry represents the bulk of the Nation's manganese requirements, the usefulness and possi¬ble advantages of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of steel must be established if electrowinning from domestic ores is to become an important factor of manganese supply.Preliminary arrangements for the cooperative tests at the Atlas Steel Casting Co., Buffalo,. N. Y., were made with E. L. Altenburg, vice president and general manager of the company, by A. A. Dow. 5/ The data on the tests at the Atlas plant presented herein are based upon reports of E. L. Injection luminescence of single crystals of rare-earth-activated CdS was investigated. Crystals of CdS:Nd, CdS:Er, and CdS:Yb, grown by the vapor transport technique, were suitably etched and hetero-junctions of Cu2S-CdS were fabricated on one side of the CdS substrate by chemical reaction. The device was then heated to 200°C in an inert atmosphere for 5 min. Static V-I measurements show that at low voltages (V < 1 v) the current is controlled by the junction, while at higher voltages the bulk Properties of the CdS substrate effectively control the current. Because of the large thicknesses no negative resistance was found. Reverse breakdown voltage varied from 5 v, for junctions that were not heat-treated, to 100 v, for diodes that received the proper heat treatment. The rectification ratio, measured in the range of 2 to 10 v, varied from 300 to 3000. Capacitance- voltage measurements indicate a weak dependence of the junction capacity on applied voltage. The capacity was found to increase appreciably with room light illumination. The variation of capacitance with frequency is indicative of a p+-i-n structure. An open-circuit voltage of 0.4 v was measured under an illumination of 100 mw per sq cm. Under forward bias, the bluish-green edge emission characteristic of CdS was observed. No sharp rare earth emission line was observed, which is in contrast to our results using ZnS:Tb, where, under high-voltage excitation, the rare earth emission was dominat over the lattice emission. The absence of rare earth emission implies that either the nature of the rare earth ion is different at the het-erojunction than in the bulk or the probability of energy transfer to the rare earth ion is small. RARE earth elements are playing an increasingly important role in the Synthesis of materials for a variety of purposes, e.g., solid-state lasers, color television screens, and so forth. This paper highlights the successful pile load testing program for the redevelopment of Pier One in East Boston, Massachusetts. Pier One is a 5.4-acre parcel on a dormant waterfront site used in the 1950s as a warehouse and distribution facility. The developer plans to re-use the existing 14-inch-diameter concrete-filled steel pipe piles to support four 5- to 7-story apartment buildings above a 2-story parking garage. A pile load testing program was developed to establish if the existing piles could support design loads of 240 kips for project financial feasibility and up to 300 kips for a significant reduction in future foundation costs. The Phase 1 program consisted of statnamic and dynamic load testing on two piles with two loading intervals (200 and 240 kips). Based upon the favorable results of the Phase 1 program, the Phase 2 program involved statnamic load testing on two piles and dynamic load testing on ten piles with three loading intervals (200, 240, and 300 kips). The Phase 2 program confirmed the favorable results which were applied across varying strata thicknesses and pile embedment depths. The average allowable capacity for the piles tested was greater than 300 kips with pile movement up to 0.3 inches.

"Construction progress is nearing completion at a Brownfield Site for a 100,000sf mixed-use 10 story building plus cellar for Silver Star Motors including a two-floor pre-owned Mercedes Benz showroom; high-end residential rental studios, 1, 2, and 3 bedroom apartments; and penthouses on the upper two floors. Excavation through impacted soil extended to 15ft depth. Project is approximately 7 ft north of a NYCT subway station, portions of the SOE are within inches of a 6ft diameter NYCDEP Sewer, and cellar extends below the depth of adjacent structures, requiring over 200 lf of underpinning.A complex series of earth retention systems was utilized consisting of underpinning, drilled-in soldier piles (micro-piles), timber/concrete lagging, soil anchors and inclined rakers supported by a partially constructed foundation mat. Foundation mat subgrade was approximately 4 ft below the groundwater level creating more challenges during underpinning and achieving suitable foundation subgrades. All construction was undertaken on a non-union basis.This paper describes the design, construction, and lessons learned for the multiple earth retention systems, Brownfield Remediation requirements, instrumentation, and monitoring used to manage complications of building adjacent to an active subway station, in close proximity to existing utilities, with underpinning and mat foundation installation below the water table.Results of the instrumentation program are summarized which utilized an AMTS, monitoring prisms on adjacent structures, automated seismographs, and manual NYCT surveys."

T HE year 1920 will be a memorable one in the history of the world&apos;s coal supply. The prices reached were the highest of modern times, and as usually happens at such a time, the quality of the output deteriorated. In the last two years of the war, the world&apos;s output had risen close to the pre-war level. After the armistice, however, the cessation of munitions manufacture and the delay in resumption of normal business curtailed the demand for coal. Industrial disputes both in Europe and America closed many mines late in 1919 and further reduced the supply. Thus when in 1920 the world set its face to work again and industrial activity was resumed where resumption was possible, consumers&apos; reserves of fuel proved insufficient and an almost universal feeling of apprehension over the coal supply swept around the world. The reasons for this alarm-lately a thing of the past-become clear when the world&apos;s production in 1920 is cast up.

A versatile torsion creep tester was instrumented with electromechanical and servomechanical components to operate automatically and unattended, producing digital printed outputs. The apparatus uses an electrical system for applying torsional stresses, and a unique angular transducer as a null detector operating a servocontrolled strain measuring system with the digital readout. The tester is designed to measure the creep in single-crystal or polycrystalline zinc, zinc alloys, magnesium, magnesium alloys, or other metals and alloys. Applied stresses may be varied from zero up to 2,000 psi in the outermost fibers of a 1/8-inch-diameter, 4-inch-long specimen. Strain readings to 0.001 degree, equivalent to a strain of 2.73 X 10-7, may be made automatically from one every 5 seconds to one per month. The apparatus has provisions for programed temperature control and special atmospheres or vacuum operation. A discussion of applications of the system to other mechanical testing apparatus is included.

INTRODUCTION Flotation of oxide minerals, particularly silicates, with cationic collectors differs substantially from classic flotation of sulfide minerals using sulfhydryl collectors. In the case of cationic flotation of these minerals, in general: 1. There is a greater importance of electrostatic interaction between mineral and collector. 2. Longer-chained collectors are required; as a rule at least 10 carbons must be present in the hydrocarbon chain. 3. Moderate concentration of collector is required. 4. Attachment between collector and mineral appears to be less strong even though the system may exhibit a large contact angle. 5. Required conditioning time before flotation is usually relatively short. 6. There is sensitivity to slimes. 7. The collectors usually possess frothing power. 8. Selectivity of cationic collectors for specific minerals is usually poor. Almost any of the oxide and silicate minerals may be floated using cationic collectors. "In contrast with the well-publicized Pittsburgh coal, and the Everglades of Florida, most coal-forming swamps of Cretaceous time in western North America occupied relatively limited areas. They formed in areas of irregular subsidence, bounded by the changing levee systems of meandering streams. Coke quality is determined by the physical and chemical behaviour of the vitrain during thermal decomposition. Vitrain is at least in part a colloidal substance, originally containing large proportions of water; its formation and survival depend on maintaining a shallow cover of stagnant water up to the time of burial. Heat from swamp fires or subaerial dyhydration could destroy it or impair its quality. Observed patterns suggest that the metamorphism is almost entirely thermal, and that there is little relation to tectonic stresses, or loading. These coals had probably achieved essentially their present rank prior to deformation. Evidence of frictional heating along the thrust planes is minimal or absent. Normally, coal beds are aquifers. Oxygen carried into the subsurface becomes available and reacts with the vitrain to destroy its natural thermoplastic properties. The tolerance of oxygen without loss of thermoplasticity is inversely related to the volatile content. Significant lateral variations of coal thickness are common and sometimes occur in short distances. In deformed areas these thickness changes are more commonly due to differential tectonic stress rather than to original thicknesses of coal. Locally, coal is known to have flowed into cavities, or fractures. These principals are discussed in relation to coal deposits of western Alberta and eastern British Columbia."

Using a scratch smoothing technique, the magnitude and the ratio of the surface diffusion coefficients (D,) in two orthogonal directions have been measured on copper for over 100 different surface orientations. Anisotropy was found for all surface orientations except those lying near the (100) and (111); however, these anisotropies were rarely greater than 2.0. The direction of maximum D, appears to coincide with the direction of step edges on any given surface, and if no such steps exist, no anisotropy is found. Thus the jump frequency along a step edge is shown to be faster than the frequency of a jump over the step. The values of Ds and AH for the (100) and the (111) orientations agree quite well with those obtained earlier by the grain boundary grooving technique. It is proven that the directions of maximum and minimum D, (the principal axes) for any surface orientation are known if the perfectly ordered plane corresponding to the given surface orientation possesses a plane of mirror symmetry. Thus the principal axes of D, for orientations lying along the sides of the unit stereo-graphic triangle are always known independent of the extent of thermal disorder or impurity adsorption. The merits and shortcomings of King and Mullins&apos; recently published equations relating Ds to the rate of scratch smoothing are discussed. 1N an earlier paper the authors have reported the variation of the surface diffusion coefficient (Ds) with surface orientation on copper.&apos; In that study Ds was determined from the rate of growth of grain boundary grooves on symmetric bicrystals. This gave values of Ds from 850° to 1070°C in a given direction on each of the six surfaces. It was found that the activation energy for surface diffusion was essentially the same for all six surfaces. The theory developed to explain these data assumed that the free energy of any given type of surface site depends only on the number of nearest neighbors the atom has. This same theory predicted that on any given surface Ds should be independent of direction. The primary aim of this study was to check the validity of this prediction for a wide range of surface orientations on copper. The growth of grain boundary grooves is ideal for studying Ds in a given direction on a given surface over a range of temperatures, because the same specimen can be repolished and used again. However, there is considerable work involved in growing a symmetric bicrystal, and for a survey of Ds in two or more directions on many surface orientations, the technique would be arduous. A better technique appeared to be the scratch method used primarily by Mykura. 2 If a scratch is placed in a surface whose surface tension is independent of orientation, the surface will smooth out in time under the influence of surface tension. To determine D, from this flattening, Blakely and Mykura2 used an approximate solution which was assumed to describe the rate of flattening. Recently King and Mullins3 (hereinafter K and M) have given a more exact analysis of the flattening of an isolated scratch. A second aim of this paper was to check the validity of this newer analysis and compare the values of Ds determined thereby with the values obtained from grain boundary grooving techniques. "INTRODUCTION The Cranberry magnetite deposits occur in pre-Cambrian granite-gneiss in a belt extending from 3 miles southeast of Cranberry, N. C., to about 6 miles southwest of Magnetic City, Tenn. The belt forms a curve, elongated to the north, approximately 26 miles in length.The Bureau of Mines investigation has been confined to the eastern part of the belt, comprising the area from Fork Mountain, Avery County, N. C., to the Hcupscup Knob prospects in Carter County, Tenn.The deposits were worked at least as early as 1820. The Cranberry Iron & Coal Co. and its successors operated the Cranberry mine intermittently for about 50 years until 1930, when operations were abandoned.The magnetite rock is amenable to concentration. Numerous laboratory tests and pilot-mill operations have proved that a high-iron, and low-phosphorus concentrate can be obtained by fine grinding and magnetic, separation, the quality of the concentrate depending upon the extent of grinding. The principal objectives of the Cranberry project were threefold.The primary consideration for beginning exploration of the deposits was the need for developing additional deposits of high-grade iron ore during the war and for replenishing the war's depletion of iron-ore reserves for the peacetime economy. The emergency did not permit logical sequence bf development, and it was necessary to begin drilling before the geophysical survey was completed. The first drilling was begun at the Cranberry mine; and the holes were located from the geological data, coordinated with the position of the mine workings."

THERE has been interest recently in the conditions under which dislocation pipe diffusion may be observed. In order to extend the measurements to temperatures below Tm/2, where pipe diffusion becomes more important, a chemical sectioning technique was developed for silver single crystals which makes possible the removal of layers of 100A or less. The procedure is briefly as follows. Silver single crystals of 99.995 pct purity were cut in the form of discs t by 4 in., electropolished, and electropolated with Ag110 to about 1000A thickness. The thickness was determined by calibrating the activity with the weight of heavier platings, up to 10,000A. Both diffused and undiffused samples were sectioned in a two-step process. Reaction with a solution of iodine in alcohol formed a thin, even layer of AgI, which was then dissolved in a KCN solution. The reaction rate of the iodine solution varied slightly over a period of time, so that the thickness of the stripped layers, while quite even and regular for a given specimen, ranged from 65 to l00W for different specimens. This variation was checked by using a thickly plated standard with each run. Layer thickness was determined from undiffused samples by the point where the layer activity drops to half the maximum. This maximum intensity also provides, with appropriate corrections, the initial concentration per layer co. Because of the small penetration distances, it is necessary to use the exact solution of Fick&apos;s law for a source of finite thickness.&apos; For a plating of thick- where c is the concentration at depth x. flj the error function, D the apparent diffusion coefficient, and t the time. The diffusion coefficient was obtained from the concentration-penetration data by extrapolating to x = 0 where c/co = erf h/2(Dt)1/2 Enough points were taken to impart confidence in the accuracy of the intersection, generally about ten layers. Four temperatures were used as in Table I. For best accuracy, t and h were chosen to give values of the parameter (Dt)1/2/h between 1.0 and 1.7. A typical concentration-penetration curve is shown in Fig. 1. The diffusion coefficients calculated from Eq. [I] are plotted in Fig. 2. For comparison, the high-temperature data of Tomizuka and sonder 2 which go down to 630°C are plotted as the solid line 2(a) from their expression D = 0.40 exp (-44,090/RT). Also for comparison, the lowest temperature point of Hoffman and Tumbull3 is plotted. It is apparent that our data diverge appreciably from the high-temperature extrapolation by 373°C. High-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) offer capacity increases, savings in operating costs and metallurgical advantages. The first installation of the Polycom HPGR in a copper ore treatment plant occurred in July 1995 at Cyprus Sierrita’s mining complex near Green Valley, AZ (Fig. 1). Until that time, the benefits this technology offers for copper and gold ore were only demonstrated on testwork. In other industries, such as diamonds, HPGR have proven to be reliable in industrial-scale plants and have set a new standard for this kind of ore treatment plant. HPGR are also successfully used for the comminution of coal, blast furnace slag and in cement and pelletizing plants. The installation at the Cyprus Sierrita Mine should prove the economical benefits in commerical-scale copper mining, confirming the results of comprehensive testwork(Fig. 2).
