World food production is not matching the exploding increase in world-population. Since arable land is limited, ways are being sought to increase yields by turning_ to fertilizer. Phosphate, an essential fertilizer ingredient, is undergoing a period of growth unparalleled in history. The United States is at once the world's largest producer of food and of phosphate rock. Both food and fertilizer output in the United States are being enlarged to meet the demands posed by the threatening world food crisis. New phosphate deposits are being developed in Florida and North Carolina to assure the United States' continued preeminence in this vital resource. Large fertilizer complexes are also being constructed with an eye to both domestic and foreign markets. The growth of the U. S. phosphate industry has been characterized by developing technology in the processing and distribution of phosphate raw materials. The trend from low analysis to high analysis materials accompanied by a change from a large number of small fertilizer plants oriented toward the marketplace to a fewer number of large plants located at the raw material source is illustrative. These changes in technology and distribution have also been important factors in the development of new mining areas in Florida, the Western States and North Carolina.

"Coal, iron and manganese ore samples were exposed to different ultrasonic intensities of 250, 300 and 350 W/L for five minutes and to an ultrosonic intensity of 270 W/L for different time durations of 3, 5 and 7 minutes. The ultrasonically treated samples showed reductions in D80 particle diameters of 6 percent for the coal samples, 5.95 percent for the iron ore samples and 35.63 percent for the manganese ore samples during grinding. The ultrasonic treatment was also observed to assist in reducing ash content in the coal product by 8 percent and to reduce manganese losses in rejects by about 5 percent. Ultrasonic treatment was concluded to be capable of assisting in the comminution of friable ores more prominently than the hard and porous materials.IntroductionComminution is an important unit operation in the mineral-processing, cement-making, powergeneration and pharmaceutical industries. But most of the milling technologies are considered to be energy inefficient, with less energy consumed in real size reduction and most of the energy consumed in the machine. This is more critical for the mineralprocessing industry because of the growing need to exploit lower-grade ore bodies and process rejects (Blazy et al., 1994; U.S. Department of Energy, 2005). Low-grade ores require crushing and grinding to liberate the valuable minerals, which are further separated from gangues by various beneficiation methods such as gravity separation, flotation and leaching. Various studies have been carried out to minimize energy consumption during milling by developing pretreatment methods that can initiate new fractures or improve the fracture density in materials before comminution. These studies were mainly focused on chemical additives; thermal, ultrasonic and microwave treatments; and electric disintegration (Klimpel and Austin, 1982; Norgate and Weller, 1994; Bearman, Briggs and Kojovic, 1997; Gaete-Garreton, Vargas-Hermandez and Velasquez-Lambert, 2000; Kumar et al., 2010; Wang, Shi and Manlapig., 2011, Singh et al., 2012).The fragmentation effect of ultrasonic fields in solids has been investigated since the 1950s, and Gärtner was probably the first researcher who attempted it (Gaete-Garreton, Vargas- Hermandez and Velasquez-Lambert, 2000). Sound waves can propagate in solids in the form of longitudinal waves, shear waves and surface waves, and in thin materials as plate waves.In surfaces, fractures and interfaces, various types of elliptical or complex vibrations of the particles make other waves possible. During ultrasonic-vibration treatment, cavitation bubbles nucleate, grow and collapse, generating microjets, whose impacts on the particles initiate microcracks. The ultrasonic waves can enhance the nucleation, growth and coalescence of flaws, caused by tensile or shear stress. The mechanisms operating in the materials and inducing these stresses have been identified as spall and compression-induced tensile microcracks, nucleating at preexisting flaws. These mechanisms are driven by the shock wave and cavitation effects in the surrounding fluid (Chen, Huang and Shih, 2003)"

A simulation of a capper concentrate smelter was built with a capacity of 450,000 tons per year. The system's components to simulate were three : a Reverbetory furnace, a Wiente ' s modified converter ( TMC ) and two cranes. The system was classified as dynamic, stochastic and discrete. In the simulation language choice it was concluded that the most advantageous one was GPSS/H. The model verification was done through the interactive Debugger that the language has and the statistical validation was done through the result variables of sane activities, that as a whole characterize the system (charged matte and charged concentrate to the TMC, skimming white metal and skimning slag). The validation was done comparing the simulation results of these variables with the ones obtained for those variables in a specific month in the smelter. The comparison consisted in a difference of means test and in all cases the equality was accepted with a 95% of confidence. The animation tool was PROOF, a general purpose animator, that is used after processing the simulation.

The stone-quarrying and related industries of the United States made large gains in employment in 1936 over 1935, according to reports furnished by operating companies to the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior. Not only were more men employed, but also increases were made in the number of man-days of labor performed and in the number of man-hours worked in 1936. The increase in employment, however, was accompanied by an increase in the number of accidental deaths and injuries among the workers and by a slight increase in the accident-frequency rate per million man-hours worked. The fact that the larger number of accidents resulted in only a slight increase in the accident rate is explained by the large gain made in the number of man-hours worked during 1936. The accident rate in 1936, although higher than in 1935, was the lowest and therefore the best that the industry has experienced in any previous year except 1932 since complete and comparable figures first became available in 1916, a period of 21 years. Operators' reports to the Bureau of Mines showed that the industry as a whole employed an average of 80,022 men in 1936 and that the men worked a total of 18,874,254 man-days or 147,064,448 man-hours. Accidents in and about the plants caused 91 deaths and 5,717 nonfatal lost-time injuries among the workers. The number of injuries and deaths represented an accident-frequency rate of 39.5 per million man-hours worked, compared with a rate of 38.2 in 1935.

Up to 1914 almost all of the world's supply of potash came from Germany and Alsace. With the cessation of shipments from Germany during the World War the importance of a domestic suppler was evident. During the past 15 years the United States has been working toward the establishment of a domestic potash industry which would end foreign dominance in this commodity. The Federal government has taken an active part in this program. As its share in the work, the Bureau of Lines has ascertained the potash resources in certain district's through core drilling and has engaged in a comprehensive program of research on the extraction of potash from its various minerals. Until the passage of the Winter bill (H. R. 496) by Congress in 1928 the Bureau of Mines had not been able to give any consideration to the western ores, wyomingite (leucite) and alunite. With the massage of this bill, however, the ray was opened for the extension of the potash studies to cover these materials.

A MUD-conditioning program found to be very effective for drilling and completion operations on routine field wells requiring relatively short drilling time involves a moderate alkaline-tannate-bentonite treatment resulting in an ultimate filtration rate of 10.0 cc or less (API test). Mud weight schedules are planned from pressure information on completed wells in producing reservoirs and drill-stem test data obtained on other zones not being produced at present. In general, terminal mud viscosities average 45 sec (Marsh). This value has been found to be sufficient to remove cuttings from the well bore on the average well, with the slush pumps in general use on the rigs. On field wells requiring drilling times in excess of approximately 30 days, an alkaline-tannate-lime-bentonite treatment has been effective in maintaining desirable viscosities and filtration rates with a substantial reduction in chemical costs. This system has shown particular advantage on heavily weighted muds and those with abnormal flow-line temperatures. For the most part, the chemical treatment utilized in wildcat drilling follows closely the program used on field wells, depending on depth and duration of drilling operations. Wildcat mud programs are planned from information available from various geologic and operational sources, taking into consideration the possibility of encountering mud problems of a special nature in the wildcat area. Careful planning of wildcat mud pro- grams has proved to have definite value in avoiding most serious mud problems. An analysis and recommended treatment are presented on several special. mud problems which have been encountered in the area in the past. Those problems discussed are lost circulation, blowouts, sloughing shale, excessive chloride contamination, sulphate contamination, and prevention and correction of cement contamination. Introduction Drilling-mud control in the Southwest Texas area, in general, does not involve the multiplicity of problems encountered in other coastal areas. For instance, it is rare that a mixture of problems such as lost circulation, abnormal pressure, severe sloughing shale, and others, occurs on one well within close enough limits in vertical depth not to be taken care of by a sensible casing program, together with a relatively clear-cut mud program. There are conditions such as the fairly widespread occurrence of abnormal pressure in the lower Frio and Vicksburg zones, and the tendency for sloughing shale in the Jackson section which make for rather expensive mud control. However, the availability of fairly accurate geologic and operational information makes possible a reasonable degree of standardization on mud treatment over a relatively large area. It may be said that, over most of this area where drilling is currently in progress, the natural mud made is very poor in quality, but responds readily to moderate chemical treatment to yield very good wall-building characteristics. [A new record in fuel efficiency at petroleum refineries was established in 1939, when a the average B.t.u. requirements per barrel of crude oil processed declined to a new low of 557,000 B.t.u. (see fig. 1). The average fuel requirement per barrel of crude oil refined has remained virtually stationary for the past 3 years. Thus in 1937 the average was 562,000 B.t.u., in is it rose to 567,000 B.t.u., and in 1939 it declined to 557,000 B.t.u. she largest gains in fuel economy cane a decade or so ago on the widespread introduction of heat exchanges and pipe stills. In recent years many successful innovations in heat saving have been adopted, but the combined effect of those is completely masked by the degree to which the capacity is utilized. Some heat requirements are relatively inelastic, so the average consumption per barrel of crude oil refined tends s to increase when the operating ratio (crude runs divided by capacity) declines and vice versa. In 1939 crude runs to stills increased 6 percent (from 1,165,015,000 barrels in 1938 to 1,237,840,000 in 1939) compared with a decline of about 2 percent in 1938. Native asphalt was produced by four companies in two States, Texas and Utah. Bituminous limestone, used primarily as a paving material for street and road repair, was produced by one firm. R. L. White Co., Dabney Quarry, Uvalde County, TX. Gilsonite, a solidified hydrocarbon found only in Utah and Colorado, was mined by three firms: American Gilsonite Co., a division of Chevron Resources Co. (a subsidiary of Standard Oil Co. of California); Ziegler Chemical and Mineral Corp.; and Hydrocarbon Mining Co. (a subsidiary of Oberon Oil Inc., a Utah corporation), from properties in Uintah County, UT. Gilsonite is used for a variety of purposes including automobile bodysealer, light-weight aggregate for cement used in oil well drilling, asphaltic building board, protective coverings, anticorrosive paints, and roofing compounds. Gilsonite production in 1985 declined 57% owing primarily to reduced oil well drilling activity. The value per ton was essentially unchanged.

Sperrylite (PtAs₂) comprises about 21% of the platinum group minerals (PGMs) in the Platreef ore and regularly reports to the tailings due to its poor floatability. Hence, improving its recovery will be of great economic value to the South African PGM industry. The reasons for its poor floatability are not yet clear. This paper seeks to understand the interactions occurring between PtAs₂ and common thiol collectors, viz. potassium normal butyl xanthate (PNBX), sodium normal dibutyl dithiophosphate (SNBDTP) and sodium normal mono butyl dithiocarbamate (SNBDTC). By understanding its interactions with these collectors, it is hypothesised that it will be possible to suggest ligands that may help improve the floatability of sperrylite. Mineral-collector interactions were studied by determining the molar energy of interaction using isothermal titration calorimetry and electrochemical techniques. The hydrophobicity of the mineral before and after adsorption of the collectors was determined by heat of immersion and its flotation response determined by microflotation tests. Microflotation tests using synthetic sperrylite at pH 9 showed low collectorless recovery of 34.8% and after adding the equivalent of one pseudo-monolayer of the PNBX collector, the recovery of 32.5% was obtained. Moreover, the addition of up to three pseudo-monolayers coverage of PNBX did not result in any increase in flotation recovery. A small recovery improvement was noted when synthetic plant water with the ionic strength of 0.0484 mol/L was used, but this did not hold for all collectors, with SNBDTP exhibiting higher recoveries in distilled water. Keywords: Sphalerite, Bio leaching, Chemical leaching Sphalerite concentrates were prepared from tailings dam samples obtained from Rosh Pinah Mine in Namibia. The samples were subjected to froth flotation and concentrates containing between 7% and 14% Zn were prepared. Leaching of these froth flotation concentrates were studied in ferric chloride solutions at different Fe3+ concentrations for different times at different temperatures with the influence of other species on the kinetics in mind. Complementary to this research, GeoBiotics, LLC and Exxaro Resources have developed proprietary bioleaching technology for the oxidation of base metals concentrates using GEOCOAT bio heap leaching technology in a sulphate medium. The ferric chloride laboratory work was performed in a fluidising leach reactor. The studied material was obtained from flotation concentrate produced during an investigation into the recoverability of a tailings pile at Rosh Pinah mine in Namibia. The optimum conditions for the laboratory investigation were found to be a Fe3+ concentration of 0.3 mol/dm3 at 80°C. A control was performed by using synthetic zinc sulphide. GEOCOAT evaluation tests are performed for the purpose of evaluating the bioleaching of ore and flotation concentrates by means of mesophilic bacteria, Column tests were carried out on the flotation scavenger concentrate from Rosh Pinah to assess the application of the GEOCOAT® process for the oxidation of a low grade zinc concentrate. In this study an attempt was made to demonstrate the relationship between the Kinetic models and the experimental data by plotting the fraction of Zinc leached against time and applying the different equations to the data. The kinetic models were applied to the data obtained from both the test regimes. Habashi (1999) proposed that if a process is controlled by a chemical reaction at the interface (phase boundary controlled reaction), the following equation applies. kCt =1 ? (1-R) 1/3 Alternatively a process is controlled by diffusion through the product layer the following equation applies: [kt = 1 23- X (1 ? X) 2/3] As the anodic dissolution reaction progresses, reaction product forms either a more or less dense reaction product layer on surface As this product layer forms, a diffusion problem develops governed by the nature of the product layer. The conclusion from the study was that the kinetics is very dependent on the type of ore processed relating to the mineral composition of the ore body.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) is investigating hydrometallurgical processing techniques to recycle metals from semiconductors and other advanced materials. Cadmium and tellurium were recovered from mixed CdTe/CdS scrap produced in the manufacture of thin-film photovoltaic devices. Selective cadmium dissolution was achieved using oxygen-pressure leaching in dilute sulfuric acid. Leaching the scrap for 90 min at 110° C in 2.2NH2S04 under 400 psig 02 yielded 97% Cd extraction; however, cadmium content of the residue ranged between 4% and 7%. Soluble iron was added to the lixiviant to catalyze oxidation of the CdS component. Tellurium and sulfur remained in the leach residue primarily in the elemental form. The iron and tellurium were removed from the cadmium-rich leach liquor by adjusting the pH to 5.3. The cadmium was recovered as cadmium sulfate crystals by evaporating the solution. Alternative leaching and purification schemes are discussed.

Total U.S. mineral production reached an estimated $17.8 billion for 1960, 4 pct above 1959 and second only to the record high of $18.1 billion established in 1957. As a group, metals achieved a rise from $1.6 billion in 1959 to $2.0 billion this year, an increase of 28 pct. Similarly the value of nonmetallic production including fuels (i.e., natural gas, petroleum, natural-gas liquids, asphalt and related bitumens, carbon dioxide. anthracite. bituminous and lignite coal, peat, and helium) rose from $15.5 billion in 1959 to approximately $15.8 billion in 1960. However, this 2 pct increase in the total value of non-metallic production was due to an increase in the value of the fuels ($11.8 billion in 1959 to $12.2 billion in 1960) which offset a drop in value of the other nonmetallic minerals ($3.7 billion in 1959 to $3.6 billion in 1960).

Views about the proper aim of public policy are, of course, matters of perspective and debate. Regardless of perspective, one would assume some consensus around the view that public policy ought to encourage mine operators to seek independent and critical assessments of worker safety and health at their operations through voluntary auditing. However, a review of the law on this topic shows that there is little to no manifestation of such a policy. Indeed, the balance of this paper, with a couple of exceptions, is devoted to the existing legal pitfalls that should be considered before a safety and health audit is conducted at a mine. While attorneys, particularly litigators like the author, might tend to focus on the potential problems that could arise from any given situation, the fact that most of this paper is devoted to potential legal concerns associated with auditing is a realistic reflection of the current state of the law. Specifically, this paper addresses the interplay between voluntary safety and health audits conducted at mines regulated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), and the administrative and civil legal issues related to such audits. The paper first provides an explanation of how and by whom an audit is conducted. The paper also addresses whether voluntary safety and health audits may be considered privileged and kept confidential in administrative and civil proceedings. Finally, selected legal issues related to such audits that could arise in administrative and civil litigation are discussed.1

This paper explores recent industry training programs and lessons for supervisors. The Belbin Team Role model was used to increase participants’ awareness of behaviour and its application. The application of the Belbin model to underground, open cut mine and quarry supervisors is discussed.The key to team success may rest with the expertise and experience of its members, but increasingly effectiveness depends on how team members understand, acknowledge and support each other’s behavioural strengths. Discovering strengths is a challenge, both for their measurement and for the encouragement of team members to use the knowledge of themselves and others in the team. Using behavioural models provides a constructive approach and a language for supervisors as they build personal motivation and engagement.Prima facie, the mineral industry’s work may be too vigorous for teams and their managers could be more prone to use ‘solo’ or traditional management styles. Managers and supervisors must know when work allocated to a team is appropriate or where individual effort should be applauded and rewarded. For practical people with well-developed technical skills, improving the soft skills necessary for a supervisor requires some reflection and effort. The Belbin behavioural model can be an effective tool for recognising characteristics that can assist teams to be more productive.Experiencing the Belbin Team Role model as part of an industry qualification is important for supervisors studying to refine their team leadership skills. Data are available for participants to assess the nature of their teams and to confront the appropriateness of the behavioural mix for the work of the team and its individual members.So what are the next steps? All team development must have a place in the strategic thinking and plans of the enterprise. In previous classifications of coal, it has been customary to regard moisture eliminated from coal samples between 20 and 100 C. as extraneous matter, rather than as a constituent part of the coal. It seems, however, that the physical character and use properties of the low-rank coals are directly related to the amount of such moisture present, and recent chemical work has shown' that such coals contain unstable groupings which decompose between 20 C. and temperatures somewhat above 100" C., with the splitting off of moisture. According to this view, the moisture eliminated from air-dried coal below boiling point is similar in all essential respects to moisture eliminated above 100" C., and is produced by analogous reactions; and inasmuch as the moisture given off above 100" C. has always been treated as a constituent of the volatile matter of coal, it would seem that consistent usage would include as a part of the volatile matter all moisture present as an essential component of the coal as it occurs in nature. As a matter of experience, it seems clear that the general physical and chemical characteristics of the low-rank coals are largely determined by or related to the moisture, whether chemically or physically combined, present in air-dried coal; it is also demonstrable by trial that the low-rank coals cannot be satisfactorily classified on a purely chemical basis by using the moisture free form of analysis. The low-rank coals of the western United States include numerous well-defined types, many of which were referred to in a classification proposed by Ashley,2 in which the physical and use properties of the coals were made the primary basis for their systematic grouping. When testing this classification by replotting analyses of these type coals according to the Seyler scheme of classification,3 a satisfactory parallelism between use properties and chemical constitution of the dry coal was found among

The method of chloride-hypochlorite leaching has the advantages of short process, low pollution and higher in reaction rate compared with the traditional leaching method. In this research, NaCl - NaClO solution is used to leaching gold from a refractory gold concentrate, and the influence of NaCl and NaClO concentration, reaction time to the leaching rate were investigated in this experiment. The raw materials and the leaching residue were characterized by a series of analysis methods such as XRD, XRF, SEM and EDS. Results indicate that the leaching rate and the desulfurization rate can be achieved at 96.26% and 98% with most optimum conditions as follows: NaCl concentration 50g/L, NaClO concentration 200g/L, Liquid-solid ratio 10:1, the best reaction time was 150 mins. And these conditions should be guaranteed pH<8.0, ORP>900mV.

Solvent-in-pulp extraction of uranium from acid leach slurries of flotation concentrates is described. Solvent extraction was carried out in a 10 in. diam pulsed-plate column. The extractant was a 0.1 M tertiary amine (General Mills Alamine 336) in a kerosene diluent containing isodecanol as an emulsion suppressor and third phase inhibitor. In pilot plant operation at the Beaverlodge mill of Eldorado Mining and Refining, Ltd., slurry feeds containing up to 35% solids were processed at a throughput rate of 13.5 tpd of dry feed. Uranium extraction obtained was as high as 98%. Amine losses to the raffinate were approximately 0.07 lb amine per ton of original dry feed. The Beaverlodge Mill of Eldorado Mining and Refining employs a carbonate leach for the extraction of uranium from the ore.&apos;,&apos; Prior to carbonate leaching sulphides are removed by flotation to reduce reagent consumption. This flotation concentrate containing some uranium is then leached with sulfuric acid, filtered, and the uranium precipitated with magnesium hydroxide. The precipitate is then returned to the carbonate leach circuit. Although the tonnage of flotation concentrate treated by acid leaching is low, reagent costs are relatively high. Also maintenance costs on the acid leach filtration circuit were beginning to show significant increases. The choice of solvent extraction-in-pulp as an alternative to the present circuit was influenced by the following factors: 1) elimination of acid pulp filtration, 2) increase in overall recovery because of soluble loss elimination, 3) reduction of reagent cost (mill sodium carbonate solutions are used as strip), and 4) production of higher purity precipitate at the mill site. Because a solvent-in-pulp process would be difficult to test on a bench-scale, the Eldorado experience in the use of pulse columns,3-5 mixer-settlers,6 and solvent-in-pulp operations in particular7 was applied directly to the initial pilot plant carried out during the summer of 1965 and followed by the second pilot plant in 1966. The latter work, which is presented in this paper, determined the following factors for anticipated scale-up to plant production: 1) overall uranium recovery by this process, 2) tonnage throughput expected, and 3) solvent losses anticipated for the full-scale plant. The equipment used consisted of a 10 in. diam extraction pulse column and three mixer-settlers for scrubbing, stripping, and acid equilibration. All equipment was designed by Eldorado and much of the pilot plant was built at the mill site. Spokane Meeting and Excursions. Further details of the 97th meeting of the Institute have been sent to members in the Circular of May 8, 1909. The list of those intending to go on the excursion is filling up, and since preference in position of state-room or berth is given in the order of application, members and guests who expect to accompany the party and have not yet communicated with Mr.. Theodore Dwight, 29 West 39th St., New York, N. Y., are earnestly requested to do so without delay. For convenience of the members a summary of the additional information is here presented. A special train of Pullman cars will leave Chicago about September 15. This train will be side-tracked at all places visited, and the sleepers will be available for lodging and the dining-car for meals during the entire trip, except during the Yellowstone Park tour. The general cost of the trip per member will be $300, which includes transportation, berth, and meals for the entire trip from Chicago back to Chicago, almost 6,000 miles, and the tour through. Yellowstone Park, occupying in all about 30 days. Special, accommodations on the train will be furnished at the following rates

"In the iron ore industry, fine particles recovery is an important concern in terms of process performance and production costs. Continuous efforts are thus devoted to increase the efficiency in handling these fines.The Reflux Classifier (RC) is a relatively new technology that is mainly used in the coal and industrial minerals industries. The operating principle of this system is based on three mechanisms: hindered settling, autogenous dense medium and lamella settling. A preliminary evaluation of the Reflux Classifier technology for the beneficiation of iron ore fines was formerly done at the pilot scale using a RCTM300 unit. The good results obtained, using iron ore fines from screened spiral stream, made this technology very attractive for the iron industry. However, the high capacity of the RCTM300 unit (1–3 t/h), makes it unsuitable for R&D purposes. Thus, a smaller unit, the RCTM100, was assessed to validate the performances obtained with the RCTM300.This paper summarizes the performances obtained with the RCTM100. The challenges of the scale-down related to the adaptability of this technology to the iron ore industry are also presented. The results are compared to the RCTM300 performances, as well as benchmarked against sink-float tests. The metallurgical results on feed and products issued after the test work with the RCTM100 unit are supported by mineralogical characterization using a Mineral Liberation Analyzer.INTRODUCTIONFine particles recovery by physical separation means is a historical concern (Holland-Batt, 1992; Peukert and Wadenpohl, 2001; Srivastavaa et al., 2001; Majumder et al., 2003). Attempts to improve fine particle recovery at the laboratory, pilot and industrial scales adopting different strategies with traditional equipment or assessing new promising devices such as the MGS (multi-gravity separator), the Kelsey jig, the Yang jig, etc. (Kim, 2002; Goudreau, 2008; Kerr, 2012) have yielded variable success."
